Excitement builds as John Diefenbaker Senior School prepares to open By Lyndon McLean New Year, new school. For some 700 students in Hanover, the wait for a new school is over as John Diefenbaker Senior School (JDSS) officially opens this fall. Built in 1923, the original school building included two science labs, a commercial subjects room, and six regular classrooms, with a gym and washrooms in the basement. The school went through a lot of changes over the years, from additions and new names to amalgamations with other schools. After so many years, it was time for an update. In 2011, Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) conducted a student accommodation review for the Chesley/Hanover area. Extensive public consultation that included input from a wide variety of community stakeholders led to several options being considered to address student accommodation needs in both communities. The decision was then made for a new school build in Hanover to replace John Diefenbaker Secondary School. The BWDSB decided to expand from Grades 9−12 to a 7−12 facility that would accommodate students impacted by the reconfiguration of other neighbouring schools in the accommodation review. To reflect the inclusion of intermediate students, the school’s name was changed to John Diefenbaker Senior School. Given the age and ongoing capital needs of the school, the board submitted a business case to the Ministry of Education for a replacement Grades 7−12 facility. The build project was subsequently approved, with approximately 20.8 million dollars provided from the Ministry of Education’s School Consolidation Capital program. In March 2014, BWDSB received funding, and the official ground-breaking for the new JDSS took place on Thursday, October 27, 2016. Prior to the ground-breaking ceremony, the design groundwork began. Bluewater District School Board worked with +VG Architects (The Ventin Group) to develop the design and site plans. Once the initial footprint was established, the +VG Architects team worked closely with the board’s area superintendent, school administration, 6

and school staff to help create spaces that were efficient yet effective for program delivery, with consideration given to the existing school layout. The plot of land that was purchased is long and narrow, which dictated much of the layout, building configuration, and site features, such as the track, parking lot, and bus route. Thanks to the efforts of +VG Architects, the project was completed within those parameters to provide a workable school layout. Along with +VG Architects, project general contractor Tambro Construction Ltd. executed the build with its team of subcontractors, and PDS Consulting provided project management services. The new facility offers students all they’ve come to know and more. The school’s entrance opens into a two-storey atrium with unique interior glazing details that allow ample daylight into the school. Other features include LED lighting throughout the school, a double gymnasium, large cafetorium with stage, and a full-size track and sports field (with a supplemental elementary sports field). There are 33 teaching spaces and, to preserve the school’s five existing Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs, the facility boasts three full-size transportation, manufacturing and construction shops. These will allow JDSS to continue offering SHSM opportunities in Construction, Hospitality and Tourism, Information and Communications Technology, Manufacturing, and Transportation. The school officially opens to students and staff in September. After considering moving students and staff into the new facility by the middle of the 2018-19 school year, board staff determined that a September 2019 timeline would ensure a smoother and less disruptive transition for those involved, while allowing additional time for the contractor to complete all aspects of the project. The new location in Hanover will continue to offer excellent programming opportunities for Grade 7−12 students, including French Immersion, in a state-of-the-art new school for many years to come. “This is an exciting time for students, staff and families in the Hanover area as we prepare for the relocation of John Diefenbaker Senior School,” says Superintendent of Education Paul Hambleton. “We look forward to continuing the school’s strong legacy and program excellence in a new and improved learning environment.” ¦ Ontario School Plant Manager | Summer 2019

protection of its colour and motif underneath.
Furthermore, the finish of the wear layer affects the texture of the surface, which influences the floor’s performance. These aspects clearly illustrate why it would be desirable for this portion of the flooring to be as durable as possible.
The complication There is a difficulty that presents itself when the visual pattern of the flooring system is incorporated within the wear layer. This therefore reduces the actual portion dedicated to wear before compromising the design and its life cycle. Aside from
It’s also important to note that the physical texture of the wear layer can cause certain problems. The sports flooring industry refers to this texture as linear embossing, also called “five o’clock shadow”. [See sidebar]
Industry-wide standards The resilient floor covering standards as per ASTM are there to help people build their knowledge, particularly to make a well-informed decision when comes the time to choose a sports floor. These universal standards are instrumental in specifying and analyzing the flooring’s properties. The results of the product testing make it possible to establish the appropriate installation procedures of a flooring, as well as ensure its strength, durability and safety towards utilization. Unfortunately, there are some manufacturers and/or distributors who choose to avoid industry testing standards in order to hide the fact that the tests revealed a sub-standard product. This creates hurdles to overcome when undergoing the process of choosing flooring that meets expectations, especially when looking for a product with a well-designed and resistant wear layer. We understand the intensive use sports flooring will take; this is why we ensure that our products meet the highest industry standards of wear layer technology. We also know that a longlasting floor makes your investment go a long way. For more about wear layers in greater detail, please see an article about “Defining wear layers” from our Tarkett Sports supplier at www.tarkettsportsindoor.com/en/sports-flooring-guide/defining-wear-layers.

It’s a shame you can’t shave your sports flooring! On a man’s face, it’s called “five o’clock shadow”. It’s that rough, dark stubble of facial hair that may appear on his face in late afternoon, signalling the need for another shave. On some sports flooring, it’s an ongoing problem that even a razor can’t fix! In the sports flooring industry, we adopted the “five o’clock shadow” expression to describe the ugly, unsanitary consequence of flooring that has a surface that contains textured grooves, more commonly referring to this texture as linear embossing. Although attractive at first, as time goes on, your efforts to keep the flooring clean will be challenged by dirt being trapped in the grooves. The result, even for diligent cleaning crews, is that the resemblance to a five o’clock shadow will eventually appear. As bad as its dingy, unkempt appearance is to the eye, what’s even worse is the buildup of unhealthy germs. Once a flooring has reached this state, extensive efforts to reverse the condition could potentially damage the affected layer, creating even more opportunities for dirt and germs to become embedded in the surface. In this situation, it becomes an ongoing battle to maintain clean and sanitary conditions and a certainty that the flooring will end up losing all its visual

aesthetic appeal. To ensure an attractive, sanitary sports flooring that remains that way even after years of vigorous use, it is essential to select flooring that has a smooth surface designed to allow easy maintenance. With regular cleaning, this type of surface will retain both its attractive appearance and its hygienic aspects, providing exceptional reliability for many years of top-quality performance! ¦ Ontario School Plant Manager | Spring 2019

Time to fix those trip hazards while school is out!
Poly-Mor Canada employs a state-of-the-art polymer resin that aggressively expands up to 20 times its liquid volume, making it effective in filling voids. Heavy concrete stairs are no match against the lifting forces obtainable from our polymer resins The Issue: A set of poured concrete stairs had settled toward each other. The walkway also sloped to the settled staircase. Besides esthetics, this was too much of a hazard and liability for a property manager to ignore. The Solution: This job involved simultaneously injecting in multiple locations with our polymer resins directly under the settled concrete steps quickly filling all voids and effectively lifting the heavy staircase. Lift was achieved evenly and without trouble to its proper height, eliminating hazards and the potential for pooling water. Once a seven-inch lift was achieved, it was time to lift and match the walkways all the way to the building. Poly-Mor Canada Inc. inspected this area first to address any questions or concerns prior to the work being done. One very important aspect to our process is treated areas can be used immediately afterwards. It was also realized how quick Poly-Mor’s process really is as this project was completed in one day!
