I’m a naturally social individual, so I am looking forward to having many conversations with members, community stakeholders, and local shoppers. Presently, apart from the daily operations of managing its social media accounts and website, the PRTC is working on a tourist attraction pathfinding sign project, installing two information kiosks, and redesigning its printed Tourism Guides. Verwey happily recalls June 2021 when the Portage Regional Tourism Committee hosted its very first Burger Days event that spanned seven days and saw 17 restaurants face off to see who would be crowned the best burger in the Portage region. “Since then, we’ve hosted the 2021 Poutine Days and

Current events As for what events local residents are interested in seeing and attending, the PRTC is currently focused on promoting the established stakeholders in the community to ensure they’re able to grow and succeed in our region.
Verwey says. “Just 15 minutes north of the city, you will find Lake Manitoba, which hosts some of the most beautiful prairie sunsets viewed from the sandy beach. And along the edge of Lake Manitoba, you’ll find Delta Marsh, known worldwide by avid waterfowl hunters and birdwatchers.”
“Each year we look for ways in which we can support both the Portage Ex and the Portage Potato Festival, as these are keystone events within our community that residents look forward to each and every year,” says Verwey. “In addition to the annual events that are held in our region, residents tend to gravitate toward any significant sporting events that come to Portage, such as the Centennial Cup or national curling events.”
She adds that in addition to having a geographic advantage, it’s the industry stakeholders that are sitting around the PRTC table that will allow the committee to stand out. “From the Recreation Authority that manages the major recreation facilities such as Stride Place, Splash Island and Delta Beach Campground to Fort la Reine Museum and Prairie Fusion Arts and Entertainment, our region truly does have something to offer everyone. “ This revitalization project will bring Saskatchewan Avenue up to the urban standard we expect from a modern city.” – Jocelyn Lequier-Jobin, City of Portage la Prairie the new sidewalks and having better access to the businesses along the stretch. It also helps that the project is being done in segments, and the public can see for themselves what lies ahead. “When we were doing just the underground work, it was a little harder for people to understand what was going on with Saskatchewan Avenue,” says Lequier-Jobin. “But now that they’re starting to see the new paving and pathways, nice landscaping, and everything else that’s coming, it makes it a little easier for people to have patience with the construction period – although I’m sure they are also excited to finally see it complete next year.” The City has also been keeping the local business community in the loop the Portage Chamber of Commerce, which has been helpful with letting the City know the concerns of businesses in the area, as well as giving city planners the opportunity to communicate directly with the business owners themselves. “The Chamber helped facilitate one of our meetings in advance of the roadwork happening last spring, just so everybody could have an idea of what would be going on over the summer,” says Lequier-Jobin. “And the feedback we received from that event was that it was very useful. It’s really about keeping the lines of communication open during this challenging construction period.”

However, tackling these issues effectively often requires extensive collaboration with all levels of government, which can be a time-consuming process. Finding comprehensive and sustainable solutions to enhance safety and reduce crime rates remains a continuous endeavour. Nevertheless, it’s a challenge we’re fully committed to addressing head-on, as the safety and peace of mind of our residents are at the core of our responsibilities as city leaders.” Having said that, she is pleased with
