THE TRAVEL CONVENTION

Welcome to the Travel Convention I am very pleased that Tokyo will host this year’s Travel Convention and invite you all; ABTA’s Members, Partners and the wider industry, to join us for what will undoubtedly be a memorable event. LEAD PARTNER World-renowned for its history, rich cuisine, architecture, electronics and anime, Tokyo is the centre of Japanese culture. It is a city of juxtapositions, where innovation and modernism meets ancient Japanese heritage. As we travel over 5,700 miles from the UK, this year’s Convention offers us the unique opportunity to explore a new location, culture and way of thinking. The business sessions will focus on what we could do differently as an industry and as individuals to adapt, grow and succeed in this ever-changing world. With Brave New World as our theme, the sessions will feature

inspiring talks from people and companies who are daring to adopt new initiatives and drive change. The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO); the Japan Travel Agents Association (JATA), ANA – All Nippon Airways and Prince Hotels & Resorts, will be the Host Partners for this year’s annual gathering and I’d like to thank them all for their tremendous support and enthusiasm and for inviting us to Japan at such an exciting time. A fuse of neon-lit skyscrapers and ancient temples, mountains and urban cities, Japan is a haven of unknown wonders. There is so much to see and do, I encourage you to explore at your leisure before and after the Convention. Please also make the most of the excursions, tours, FAM trips and Rugby World Cup packages on offer, all especially tailored for delegates. Many thanks for your continued support for ABTA’s flagship event. I wish you all an enjoyable time in Tokyo

Discover Japan Team Japan (Japan National Tourism Organisation, Japan Association of Travel Agents, ANA – All Nippon Airways and Prince Hotels & Resorts) is delighted to be welcoming visitors to Tokyo for ABTA’s 2019 Travel Convention.

As the gateway to Japan, Tokyo offers an abundance of cultural and culinary experiences that introduce visitors across the globe to all that Japan has to offer. The city has recently been named the most affordable

long-haul city by Post Office Travel Money in the UK, and with a number of international sporting events on the horizon, there has never been a better time to visit. Japan’s capital combines the ultra-modern in cutting-edge design, fashion and architecture with the ancient legacy of thousands of years of Japanese heritage and tradition. Attendees to the Convention will have the opportunity to discover what makes Tokyo such an exciting travel destination, from exploring the city’s most renowned landmarks such as Tokyo Skytree, Meiji Shrine and The Imperial Palace, to stumbling across the city’s hidden ramen restaurants and sake bars, or experiencing a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore beyond the capital city, with ANA connecting travellers

to over 45 destinations across Japan and Prince Hotels & Resorts offering 43 properties located across the country. Those wanting to experience the old Japan can head to Japan’s original capital city, Kyoto, whilst those wanting to enjoy Japan’s relaxing beach resorts can head to Okinawa. The Travel Convention provides the perfect opportunity for ABTA Members to expand their product knowledge of Tokyo and beyond, and a chance to experience the culture, cuisine and customs of Japan first-hand through four familiarisation trips hosted by the JNTO. We are very excited to be hosting The Travel Convention 2019 and showcasing our country to you.

THE TRAVEL CONVENTION

Key Pillars The Travel Convention is themed to ensure it carries a consistency of message and relevancy, with the programme developed around three key pillars: Your Business, Our Industry and Our World. The sessions aim to provide a broad spectrum of tips and insights and prepare you for what lies ahead. Each year, some of Travel’s most recognisable players share their views on the industry, while external experts deliver thought-provoking content around new business practice and innovations coming down the line. The programme also includes guest speakers who inspire delegates to change the way they think and behave.

From drastic geopolitical to social and economic transformations, our world is constantly altering. Globalisation and increasing competition are accelerating the speed of change, whilst technological advancements are continually transforming the experiences available to consumers. Our customers are choosing to travel for different reasons and we are increasingly seeing the rise of the conscience traveller, as environmental concerns influence holiday choices. Whilst we are confident updating our smartphones and systems, updating our core habits, attitudes and beliefs is harder. Instead, we tend to follow familiar patterns and daily routines. But as the world changes, so must we.
