Tokyo is the gateway to Japan and we invite you to experience the abundance of cultural and culinary experiences our capital has to offer. Also, with a number of international sporting events taking place across the country in the next year, there has never been a better time to visit.

THE TRAVEL CONVENTION

Theme From Japan’s pioneering work in technology and science, such as its advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, to its unique popular culture, including manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation) – as an innovation leader, Japan has been introducing the world to cutting-edge products and ideas for years. From drastic geopolitical to social and economic transformations, our world is constantly altering. Globalisation and increasing competition are accelerating the speed of change, whilst technological advancements are continually transforming the experiences available to consumers. Our customers are choosing to travel for different reasons and we are increasingly seeing the rise of the conscience traveller, as environmental concerns influence holiday choices. Whilst we are confident updating our smartphones and systems, updating our core habits, attitudes and beliefs is harder. Instead, we tend to follow familiar patterns and daily routines. But as the world changes, so must we. Going forward into 2020 and beyond, it is paramount that we broaden our horizons and dare to be bolder, braver and open to new possibilities. This year’s Travel Convention in Tokyo provides the ideal location for us to explore what we can learn from the East; what we could do differently as an industry, as well as individuals, to adapt, grow and prosper in this ever-changing world.

Key Pillars The Travel Convention is themed to ensure it carries a consistency of message and relevancy, with the programme developed around: Our World, Our Industry and Your Business. This year’s business sessions will focus on the theme Brave New World, through a lens of what’s intriguing, what’s inspiring, and what’s challenging?

With this year’s business sessions based around the theme Brave New World, you will hear from companies and individuals who are adopting new and exciting approaches, pushing boundaries and driving change. We trust they will leave you feeling inspired and unafraid to explore new ways to view what lies ahead.

Pamir Convention Center The business sessions will take place at the Pamir Convention Center, which is linked to

what’s going on and what lies ahead? the issues and emerging trends affecting the industry best business practice and innovations coming down the line quality networking with fellow delegates

From changes in the way business and leisure travel is distributed, to diverse cultural needs in different locations, how can travel companies embrace the complex world of Travel retail where on and offline differentiation is outdated? Champa Magesh, who prior to her new global role was Senior Vice President of Retail Travel for Amadeus in the Asia Pacific region, is ideally placed to explore retailing in the 21st Century including the latest tech trends in the East, and what the West can learn from them.

Jo McCrostie, Creative Director, Global, the Media & Entertainment Group Somi Arian, Founder, Smart Cookie Media

In today’s noisy world, it is becoming increasingly hard to connect with customers as businesses compete for consumer attention. Facebook now defines a video view as three seconds and the Interactive Advertising Bureau a viewable impression when at least 50% of an ad appears on screen for more than one second. This short attention span, particularly among the younger generation, will require Travel businesses to use creativity to communicate messages in a matter of seconds – but how can you capture attention, humanise your brand and make lasting connections in such a short time frame? And what should Travel brands be doing to engage with millennials and Gen Z in A Brave New World? Jo McCrostie, award-winning Creative Director at Global, the Media & Entertainment Group, and Somi Arian, Founder of Smart Cookie Media, will explore the benefits of thinking creatively and daring to adopt imaginative strategies when connecting to audiences.

Face to Face with Andy Duncan

10:50-11:20

Andy Duncan, Chief Executive Officer, Travelopia

Our customers are choosing to travel for different reasons and we are seeing the rise of the conscience traveller, as environmental concerns increasingly influence holiday choices. Travellers are asking more questions about the social and environmental impacts of their stay before making a decision about where to visit. Millennials and Gen Z travellers are looking for more sustainable holiday experiences and ways to travel that reduce their carbon footprint, and there is an increasing demand for destinations and companies to implement good animal welfare practices. In this session, we will talk to a range of travel companies about the moves they are making to address the rise of the conscience traveller and the many ways that customers, travel companies and communities can all benefit from responsible tourism.

Andy was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of Travelopia in 2018. He is a transformational CEO who has delivered significant growth, market leadership and strategic change in a variety of industries and sectors. Prior CEO roles include Channel 4, Camelot and H R Owen. He was also a Board Director at the BBC and Unilever, and was the first ever Chair for Freeview. In conversation with Chris Ship, Andy will share his travel-outsider vision for the business, also addressing the hottest issues for travel at the time of the Convention.

The Rise of the Conscience Traveller

Customer Happiness and Sustainable Change Patrick Marsden, Head of Travel, MaCher

This session will see Patrick Marsden, the Head of Travel at MaCher – the environmental and social consultancy – share MaCher’s social experimental psychological research about happiness during the customer journey. It may be a surprise to many to learn when guests are experiencing the most happiness during the consumption of experiential products, such as travel – information that can be useful in improving guest adoption of sustainable changes. In this fast-paced, research backed and thought-provoking session, Patrick will explain how many of their clients have successfully removed single use plastic products without degrading the guest experience, and the vital role a network can play in driving change.

The Future of Travel in a Brave New World

Alistair Pritchard, Lead Partner (Travel), Deloitte

Moderated by Lucy Huxley, Editor in Chief, Travel Weekly Group

Over the past year, some of the world’s biggest tech firms have showed increased interest in the potential uses and application of cryptocurrency. With Facebook announcing plans to launch Libra within a year, effectively allowing up to 2.4 billion users to send money to others or make purchases easily and cheaply, Yahoo purchasing 40% of the Japanese crypto exchange, Taotao, for an estimated 2 billion yen ($19 million) and Google launching new crypto-related search tools, ‘new money’ is set to be propelled into the mainstream. Alistair Pritchard, Deloitte’s Lead Partner for Travel, will explore the possible impacts of new money on the travel industry, and what we will have to do to evolve and adapt to take full advantage of the opportunities it provides.

As we approach the close of this year’s Travel Convention, industry leaders will share their views on the future of travel. From innovating through products and technology to reimagining their approach to sustainability or reinventing the experiences they offer the holidaymaker, the panel will discuss some of the exciting innovations that are coming down the line and what we can do differently to grow and prosper.

Making Global Local Philippe Gas, President and Managing Director, Walt Disney Attractions Japan 13:20-13:50

The experts in product innovation and adaption designed to ensure continued appeal to audiences around the world are Disney, whose theme park and resort concepts in Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo enjoy their own unique identity while remaining authentically Disney. This session will see Philippe Gas, the President and Managing Director of Walt Disney Attractions Japan, take you behind the scenes at the ‘Happiest Place on Earth’. From offering subtly different selections of food, rides and layout to cater for local needs, to navigating international laws and legislation or dealing with staff around the globe, Philippe will explore the opportunities, challenges and pitfalls for global companies looking to establish themselves as a part, rather than an interpretation, of a culture and its people.

Travel businesses are constantly looking for new ideas to improve passenger margins. Spendology’s white label travel cash platform could be the answer. Cash is still the most important form of currency for Brits on holiday. £27 billion is exchanged in the UK prior to departure each year, according to Mintel, with further growth forecast. If you don’t sell travel cash, you’re missing out on that revenue. Spendology Cloud is an innovative new technology platform that allows you to sell travel cash to customers and profit. You can customise and configure services, change the branding, offer various exchange rates, include different strategies for each currency and tracking competitors. You’ll have a modern retail front end that elevates your brand and a modern user journey with a 92% five star rating on Trustpilot from thousands of users. Partner with us and you’ll get your own travel cash site, mobile app, smart speaker capability, clever widgets integrated into your site, and you can use our code snippets to deliver personalised pre-departure emails. Users choose the date and time of delivery to any UK address and partners can personalise delivery options to their business, with the opportunity to collect from branches, offices or depots. The potential to deliver travel cash as part of an airline at-seat service can also be discussed. Make travel cash part of your product offering and use the profit to fill a budget deficit, fund additional marketing campaigns or to boost your turnover prior to a merger or acquisition. www.spendology.com

San’in, " the shadow of the mountains," also often finds itself in the shadow of other regions throughout Japan. Located on the western side of Honshu, facing the Sea of Japan on the north side of the Chugoku Mountain range, San’in is made up of the two prefectures of Shimane and Tottori. There are no bullet trains, no large-scale industrial areas, and no major commercial centers. So what exactly is there about the San’in region that would appeal to people to come and visit? Having avoided much of the rampant, indiscriminate overdevelopment that can be seen in other areas of the country, the San’in region has preserved much of what gives Japan its appeal. The history, culture, lifestyle, and unspoiled natural scenery here all connect to the roots of Japan, and those who are seeking the qualities that give Japan its uniqueness will not be disappointed by what they find here in San’in. Many of the quintessential parts of Japanese culture find their origins here. Locations throughout the region have strong connections to Japanese mythology. From archaeological sites which shook concepts of ancient Japanese history to temples and shrines whose architecture has confounded experts, mysteries abound here in San’in. There is even one area here where all of the gods throughout Japan are said to gather once a year. This distinctive nature of the San’in region has created an area unlike any other in Japan, and it all awaits you.
