The driver is seated at front left with the powerpack to his right, turret in the centre and the troop compartment at the rear. The infantry enter and leave via a large door in the hull rear that opens to the right. The two man power operated turret is armed with a stabilised Mauser 30mm cannon with a 7.62mm machine gun being mounted co-axial to the left. Turret traverse is through a full 360 degrees with weapon elevation from -10 to +50 degrees. Standard equipment includes a NBC protection system, heater, applique armour and a computerised day/night fire control system.

DEVELOPMENT The ASCOD (Austrian Spanish Co-Operative Development) mechanised infantry combat vehicle has been jointly developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria and SANTA BARBARA of Spain with the latter country placing the first production order for a total of 144 vehicles under the local name of Pizarro early

in 1996. Austrian Army has placed an order for 112 vehicles under name of Ulan.
STATUS Production. In service with Spanish Army (as Pizarro) and on order for Austrian Army (as Ulan).
