Munchkin Minutes Welcome back to Munchkin Minutes. After a great summer off we were all ready to get back to school and for some of the children, it was the exciting first day of Kindergarten and Preschool. They have had many great stories of their new adventures at school to share with us back at the Daycare. This summer at the Daycare, we had a pretty special guest. A Police Officer stopped by one afternoon and let the children check out his car including the lights and sirens. He even let each of the children say something into his loud speaker. When he left he gave all the children stickers and tattoos and the kids played “police man” for days after. Our little garden that we planted this year was pretty successful. We grew lots of lettuce for our sandwiches, peas and beans for soup, and tomatoes. The kids have enjoyed just picking and eating the little ones right from the garden. We have spent the majority of our summer outside unless it was storming or just way too hot. We received an old sail boat for our play area that the kids love! They pretend it is lots of things or that they are out at the dam fishing and the waves start rocking the boat. It is a great addition to our play space. Another great item that we have had for years is our water table. It sure came in handy those hot days to try and beat the heat. We have used it as a car wash and played the sink or float game in it. One hot day we even got
our water cannons out and had a big water fight. Another addition to our play space are some pool noodles we use as water falls into our sandbox. The children dump water in the top and it makes a stream at the bottom that the kids have turned into rivers and mud bogs for their trucks. Just before the Fair in Town, we had our own getting ready for it at the Daycare. We did cowboy themed crafts including horse shoes and cowboy boots. We each decorated one of the ride on toys at the Centre and went on our very own parade uptown. We finished the week off
with our own little carnival of games. All the kids were very excited for the Fair to start. We have also been lucky enough to be able to walk down to the Farmer’s Market a few times over the summer. We enjoyed seeing all the different things people had for sale and talking about where it grows or how it’s made. We also liked listening to the live music that was there. We even made it down to the bouncy castle and had lots of fun even though it was a very hot day. On September 16, we held our own little Terry
Fox Run/Walk where we raised over $50 to go towards finding a cure. The kids did awesome on their walk and talked about why we were doing it. A couple of things we are looking for at the Daycare are your old pots and pans that you don’t need or use anymore. We would love to use them for an outdoor music area. The other is Board members we are always looking for people to join the Board with their fresh ideas. Hope everyone had as great of a summer as we did at Wee ‘R’ Special. Until next month, signing off, The Munchkins

Letter to the editor Dear editor Sunday, September 20, 2105, marked the 35th annual Terry Fox Run! This year 84 participants enjoyed the lovely sunny September afternoon and helped raise over $1,200, which will go directly to the Terry Fox Foundation. The run was once again organized by the Ladies 2000 Club. Jean Agnew and Rhett Crepeele were the lucky winners of the Terry Fox 35th commemorative tshirts. Our oldest walker this year was George Janssens (84 years), our youngest participant was Everly Fletcher (13 months). The Terry Fox Run could not be a success without the help of so many in our community and we would like to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Terry Fox Run a success. Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Volleyball team who won their tournament last weekend. They played host to seven other teams in a round robin style tournament. The teams included Souris, Reston, Nellie McClung (Manitou), Elton, Cartwright, Strathclair, Melita and host Deloraine. The home team defeated a strong Elton team in the A-side finals - they won 25-21 game, lost 2518 second game and won 15-13 in the final game to win the set. In the B-Side finals, Reston defeated Nellie McClung 25-18 first game and 2518 in the second game. It was a great weekend of volleyball action. See photos for more. • • • A big congrats to Deloraine MNP on the grand opening of its new facility. It’s very encouraging that the company chose to build in our small town. Hopefully it will spur further development. • • • Awareness and promotion of the Terry Fox Run is very strong in Deloraine. Three separate events raise money for cancer research, including the community Terry Fox Run, the bank challenge and the School Terry Fox Run. I think Terry would be very happy to see so many people carrying on his work. Way to go everyone! • • • Just another reminder about Showcase - the evening shows begin at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30 as was the usual in the past years. This Sunday, September 27 is the first concert in the 2015-16 series when “Royal Wood” takes the stage. At last report there were a few tickets available for this show. You can call Linda Watson for more information. • • • Deloraine School kicked off their new project with a Water Festival on September 15. There were three stations, including “Soak It Up,” “Water Pong” and “Walk For Water.” The whole idea was to learn about water conservation through fun activities. Prior to going outside for the fun, students discussed water conservation and viewed a video on the topic - “Clean Water in Third World Countries.” First of all, younger grades were placed with older grades and made into teams. This, in itself is an excellent activity. It really is amazing to watch how the younger kids look up to the older kids and the older kids just naturally take them under their wing. In “Soak It Up” two teams were placed side by side with a bucket full of water at one end and an empty bucket at the other end. They were given a sponge which they were to soak up with water and get it to the other bucket as quickly as possible without losing any water and squeezing out the water at the other bucket. The object was to see which team could get the most water in their other bucket first. In “Water Pong” students had to bounce a ping pong ball into red solo cups. If they were successful the cup was emptied out into a bucket. The object was to get the most amount of water in the bucket. In “Walk For Water”, students were teamed up (young and older). They filled a pail of water and were to walk half way round the course where they handed it off to another team. It was interesting to see how much water got lost from one end to the other. These activities are excellent forms of teaching about water conservation — about how precious water is, and how easily it is gone. Well done Deloraine School!

OBITUARY
CARD OF THANKS We were aware that Dad knew a lot of people from a lot of different areas, but that became even more evident from the expressions of sympathy we have received over the last few weeks. We thank you for the cards, flowers, emails, texts and Facebook messages (It’s a new age!), phone calls, visits, food, and hugs. Thank you also for sharing your memories of Dad with us. Thank you to Dr. Brackenreed for his compassionate care and manner with both Dad and ourselves; to the support staff at the Deloraine Health Centre for making us all feel at home and looking after our needs before we knew we needed them, and for your visits with Dad. A huge thank you to all of the nurses, or ìthe girlsî as Dad called you. Not the most politically correct term in this day and age, but it was a term he used for ones he cared for, and not one of you left the room without Dad saying, “She’s so good to me.” and you most definitely were good to him. Thank you isn’t adequate enough to express how grateful we are for Dad’s neighbours and friends who have helped him in so many ways over the past several years, and continued to help us in many ways since his passing. From rides to medical appointments to helping with farming , and just keeping an eye out for him, we can’t thank you enough, but know that your kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. Thank you to Rev. Barb Alston for listening to us, and then putting our words together in a fitting tribute to Dad. Thank you to Kurt and Neil at Redpath Funeral Home for their kind and professional guidance and service. And most of all, a huge thank you to our families, both immediate and extended, for helping us through this difficult time for taking care of what has been needed to be done, and for continuing to be our source of strength and support. MINER Dwight Lewis Miner passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Deloraine Health Centre. Dwight, the oldest child of Lew and Ella (Kirkup) Miner, was born January 12, 1943 in Virden, MB. He was just over two pounds at birth, and spent the first several weeks of his life sleeping in an apple box on an open oven door. He lived in the Houston District (near Broomhill) for a few years, but for the majority of his life he lived at Bede, where he raised his own family. Dwight quit school at an early age to join the workforce. Over the course of his lifetime, Dad worked for several farmers in the Melita, Hartney, Deleau, and Lauder areas; worked for Critchlow Trucking and Hammond Transport as a driver and equipment operator; worked in the U.S.A for several families as an assistant dog trainer, and bartended at the Met and Palace Hotels in Melita. He worked for many years as a grader operator, then as sub-forman for the Melita branch of the Department of Highways, retiring in 2003 after 30 years of service. In 1979, he started his backhoe business - Southwest Backhoe Services and was fortunate to be able to work with his brother, Craig, and son, Randy on many worksites. Dad also had a small herd of cattle, and was a talented, selftaught welder. He loved nothing better than a good visit, and a stranger was just someone he hadn’t got to know, yet. The family joke has always been that Dad was a walking history book, as he had worked in so many communities and knew so many people. If you asked Dad who someone was, you prepared yourself for a ten to fifteen minute history lesson. He loved to tell a good story; to tease, and to hear a good joke. He also had a knack for giving (and getting) nicknames. Dwight is survived by his daughter Robin (Gord) Brigden of Medora (children: Kirby & Ross); son Randy of Souris (children: Brett, Zachary, & Trent); Randy’s friend Kristine and her daughter, Terri; brother Craig (Linda) and family; and sister, Cindy (Wes) Omichinski. He was predeceased by his infant brother, Randy, and parents, Lewis and Ella. A graveside funeral service was held at the Bede Cemetery on Sunday, September 13, 2015 with Rev. Barb Alston officiating. Urn bearers were his daughter, Robin and son, Randy; honourary pallbearers were all those in attendance. Arrangements were in care of Redpath Funeral Home, Melita, Manitoba. Donations in memory of Dwight may be given to the Bede Cemetery Fund, c/o Mr. Doug Wilkinson, Box 545, Melita, MB R0M 1L0, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415 1st Street East, Brandon, MB. R7A 2W8.

OBITUARY
WRIGHT
It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Gladys Wright (nee Gurney) announce her peaceful passing on September 10, 2015 at the age of 85 years surrounded by loved ones. On November 4, 1929, Mom was born in Eyebrow, SK to George and Elsie Gurney. The eldest of a family of twelve, life was full of fun and laughter (and baby-sitting!). Upon graduating from high-school, friends talked Mom into trying nursing and it was there that she found her true calling. In 1951, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Regina General and never looked back. A few years later she met her soul-mate and on June 21, 1958 she and Jack were married in Eyebrow, SK. Soon afterward they moved to Waskada where they farmed for sixteen years. Those sixteen years were full, raising five daughters, hauling grain, milking cows and nursing in Melita and Deloraine. Life was busy. Then, in 1975, Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved to Deloraine, where Mom nursed at the hospital and was Director of Nursing at BrenDelWin Lodge until her retirement in 1991. The memories of those years in Deloraine and the friends she made there were very special to her. In 2003, they moved to Brandon and in 2009, three years after Dad’s passing, Mom moved to Winnipeg. Although she moved several times in the last years of her life, she was warm and kind and made friends wherever she went. Mom was a fabulous cook (her apple pie was the best!) and a wonderful caring nurse, but first and foremost she was a wonderful mother. Her happiest times were spent with her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren who were so very precious to her. She was immensely proud of her family and all of their accomplishments. Her family was the love and light of her life. Christmases at Grandma and Grandpa’s were special for all of us and the memories of those times are a part of who we are and will live on forever in our hearts. Mom will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her five daughters, Nancy, Lori, Sheri, Jackie and Kara; sonsin-law Greg, Bill and Len and grandchildren Jennifer, Jeff (Lyndsey), Evan, Kyle, Steve (Anita), Kendra (Tony), Sara (Marc). Also remaining to cherish her memory are her brothers and sisters and their families, Chuck and Marlene, Shirley and Herb, Elaine, Bea, Joan, Merilyn and Bryan, Ron and George and Jean; sisters-in-law Isobel and Phyllis. She will also be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends both young and old. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Elsie Gurney; husband Jack; sisters Jean and Eileen; brother Ken; brothers-in-law Fred, Doug, George, Garfield, Raymond and Larry. A very sincere thank-you goes out to the staff at Seine River Retirement Residence for their warmth and caring; to Kathy Misurka-Feal and the home care staff that supported Mom for the last few years; to Dr. Van Rensburg and his staff for their support and caring; and to the 4th floor staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their warmth and support in the last week of her life. Each of you touched Mom’s heart and brightened her days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in Gladys’ memory be made to the Southwest Regional Foundation, Box 338, Deloraine, MB, R0M 0M0 (please designate to “Deloraine area”), to the Parkinson’s Society of Manitoba, 7 - 414 Westmount Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R2J 1P2 or to a charity of choice. In accordance with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held at a later date. “Thank you Mom for everything you have given us. We love you and will hold your memory forever in our hearts.” Messages of condolence may be placed at www.brockiedonovan.com. Arrangements are in care of Brockie Donovan Funeral & Cremation Services, Brandon, 204-727-0694
