David Hawkins - Senior, Financial Economics Major | Wilmington, DE Student Government Association President 2022-2023

As a first-generation college student, I embarked on my journey at Delaware State University (DSU) with uncertainty about my future. However, I was determined to make the most out of my college experience and education. Choosing to become involved with campus life became my guiding compass, igniting a passion for student leadership that would shape my path and leave an enduring impact on the University.

During my freshman year, a pivotal moment occurred when I connected with two extraordinary individuals who would become early mentors and ignite my entrepreneurial spirit. Dr. Michael Casson and Mr. Wade Robinson, through their wisdom, guidance, and business acumen, inspired me to pursue my own real estate ventures. Their mentorship not only developed my understanding of the business world but also instilled in me a sense of possibility and the courage to pursuemydreams.Following,IattendedtheEbonyTie Affair, an esteemed event that brought together DSU alumni and influential figures. It was there that I had the incredible opportunity to meet Dr. Allen and other remarkable alumni whose stories of success, resilience, and commitment to making a difference deeply inspired me. Their experiencesawakenedafirewithinmetopursuestudentleadershipatDSU,knowingthatIcould beacatalystforchange.

Motivated by their powerful narratives and driven by an unyielding ambition to empower myself and my peers, I set forth on a transformative path as a student leader. Recognizing the responsibility that came with being a first-generation college student, I sought to pave the way forfuturegenerationsandmakeameaningfulimpactoncampus.

My journey as a leader commenced with my appointment as the President of the Men of Color Alliance. Leading this organization allowed me to champion personal development, professional growth, and community service for men of color on campus. It became a platform through which I could inspire and uplift my fellow students, providing them with vital mentorship, resources, andastrongsupportnetwork.

However, my passion for effecting positive change extended beyond the Men of Color Alliance. As the SGA President, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to advocate for my peers and spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing campus life. Collaborating with DESUtv, I amplified student voices and showcased the vibrant achievements and activities of our DSU community through engaging media platforms. Through strategic vision and effective communication, I soughttofosterunityandinstillprideinourstudentbody.

Recognizing the power of technology in improving the student experience, I played a pivotal role in the development of the DSUHub app. This innovative solution streamlined campus life, granting students easy access to resources, event information, and academic tools. Through this initiative, I was integral to the design and student experience process as they navigate their Universityjourney, fosteringefficiency, connectivity, andstudentsuccess.

This vital platform facilitated open dialogues, awareness campaigns, and policy reforms, ensuring that every student felt heard, respected, and valued within our DSU community. I am immensely proud to have played a part in fostering an inclusive and empoweringenvironment.

My story as a student leader exemplifies the transformative power of resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. As a first-generation college student, I overcame uncertainties and embraced my potential to inspire others. My journey at DSU has not only shaped my own future but has also paved the way for future generations of student leaders. EAB's Navigate: The Gateway to your advisors

Last year, the Office of Student Success (OSS) team launched a new tool, EAB Navigate. Navigate streamlines the case notes, referral, and resource processes for the OSS team whileprovidingstudentswitha platform to schedule tutoring, advising, and other related services. Navigate allows faculty and staff to act collaboratively as a care team for students, monitoring their academic progress, professional needs, and personal concerns.

Navigate also includes an app feature, which keeps students connected to OSS resources on the go. The Navigate app can be accessed on your various app stores, the Apple store or Google Play store, ordirectlyintheDSUHUBapp.

DSU Navigate Support Micro Site

Set to debut this summer for Fall 2023 - The Office of Student Success is working to provide students, staff, and faculty with all the support needed to utilize Navigate. The site will include directions, videos and Frequently Asked Questions to access Navigate to support your students' journeys.

Frequently Asked Questions: Parent/Families

Who can my student speak to about financial aid?

All students are served by the Office of Financial Aid. Each student is assigned a specific financial aid counselor. Counselors are assigned by the last name. Students can view their counselor’s contact information and schedule an appointment here: https://www.desu.edu/admissions/financial-aid/resources/contact-financial-aid

How does my student get tutoring?

Free academic supports, including tutoring, are available at no charge for all DSU students through Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS). Students can schedule an appointment with any IASS service, including the quantitative reasoning center (math tutoring), writing studio (support for writers), or tutorial center (any subject except math and writing) using EAB’s Navigate. Tutoring is offered in person and online. You can find more info about IASS and its services here: https://www.desu.edu/academics/studentsuccess/integrated-academic-support-services

How can my student stay organized?

Organization and time management are essential skills for all college students. DSU offers time management and organizational support through Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS). IASS offers tutors that work with students to reinforce class concepts by utilizing multiple learning strategies and applying study/note-taking skills and test-taking strategies. You can connect with them on Instagram at DSU_IASS or check out their web page here: https://www.desu.edu/academics/studentsuccess/integrated-academic-support-services
