THRIVE IN THE HIVE
Delaware State University Office of Student Success Parent Newsletter
GREETINGS! WELCOME TO THE HIVE
Ms. Jarso Jallah Saygbe Associate Vice President
The Office of Student Success (OSS) is proud to welcome readers to the first edition of its quarterly Parent E-Newsletter. The purpose of this e-newsletter is to connect Hornet families with OSS and bring a greater awareness of Student Success endeavors at Delaware State University. This publication will keep Hornet families up-to-date on the latest efforts at the University in support of student success, with a specific focus on academic advising and student support services. The content will include important dates and deadlines, tips for student success, answers to frequently asked questions, Hornet Highlights, success stories, and the opportunity to connect with
Student Success staff via our email helpline at Thrive@desu.edu. We anticipate that this level of engagement with Hornet families will serve as a proactive solution to addressing advisement-related issues or concerns. Thank you for choosing Delaware State University, where It All Matters!
Office of Student Success: Advising Mission & Framework The OSS mission is to assist students in the pursuit of their academic goals and personal development by providing quality academic counseling in an accessible, friendly, respectful environment that fosters lifelong learning and student success. We endeavor to do this through a collaborative educational partnership from orientation to graduation and beyond. Although support and guidance are provided to students by their advisors in OSS, our students are ultimately responsible for their educational success. Academic advising at Delaware State University is designed to provide students with a collegial and academically enriched college experience. As part of our core academic services, the four-year student experience framework offers centralized advisement that is proactive and holistic. Academic advising is provided by professional advisors while mentoring in career, research, and specific discipline-related guidance is provided by faculty mentors. As a collaborative campus community, students are provided with guidance, support, planning tools, and resources to make informed decisions that impact their academic success and career goals.
DSU Academic Advising Overview Under the Office of Student Success, the advisement teams are organized by college. Each college has a team of professional advisors that specialize in their college’s curricula. In addition, there is a transfer advisor that assists first-year transfer students in their transition to the University. Don’t forget to check out our advising FAQ webpage!

DSU Academic Advising Overview (cont.) The Office of Student Success implements two signature student success initiatives: the Individual Development Plan (IDP) and the 15 Strong to Completion campaign. Academic advisors partner with students to develop an Individual Development Plan, a comprehensive student planning tool that charts first-year steps toward identifying and establishing interests, goals, majors, and career pathways toward academic success. IDP I – Held within the first 6 weeks of the semester, focuses on advisor and student introductions, goal setting, and mid-semester check-in. IPD II – Held after the first 6 weeks of the semester, focuses on midterm grades review, pre-advisement for the next semester, and track status of goals. The 15 Strong to Completion campaign promotes a standard that encourages students to complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of coursework per semester to complete their degree program in four years. Embedded with ongoing relationships with advisors, faculty, staff, and peers, each student will be able to personalize his or her campus experiences while developing attitudes and behaviors reflective of the University’s Core Values.
Student Objectives For First-Year Success
Advisement Cycle You can find a detailed list of important dates on the Academic Calendar.
Students will: Become aware of University policies and procedures Understand curriculum requirements Identify campus resources Strengthen oral and written communication skills Participate in academic community and social engagement opportunities Engage in peer learning
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects a student’s educational record. FERPA restricts information from being disclosed to third parties (this includes friends and family members of the student) without the student’s written consent. Students can update their FERPA permissions by contacting the Office of Records and Registration. More information about FERPA rules can be found within the Academic Catalog.
Hornet Highlight
The Hornet Highlight recognizes current DSU students, their experiences, and contributions to the University. Read all about their commitment to student success and how they share their talents with others to make DSU an exceptional place to learn and grow. Timara Fortt - Senior, Criminal Justice | Brandywine, MD I chose to become a Peer Academic Coach (PAC) because navigating college was very difficult for me. I started college as a dual enrollment student in high school. I had no one to help me, no one to tell me where my classes were, no one to tell whether or not I picked a good professor, and no one to tell me what Blackboard was and why I need it. I had to learn everything on my own. I would like to share what I have learned with others so no one else has to struggle like I did.
One piece of advice that I have for a new student is don’t struggle in silence, ask someone for help. Whether that’s a professor, advisor, or PAC, it is okay to ask for help. 2

Managing Academic Difficulties The first step toward managing academic challenges is for students to know what free resources are available to them. The Office of Student Success (OSS) has several programs and supports for students. OSS offers academic programs and workshops throughout the semester. These programs are open to all students at Delaware State University and are designed to assist with some of the common challenges that college students face, as well as build upon our students’ existing strengths. The diagram illustrates all of OSS' current programs. You can learn more about OSS and its services by clicking here. In addition to connecting directly with advisors, there is an early alert system in place to identify at-risk students. Faculty can send an alert to a student’s academic advisor and detail their concerns, such as missing work, poor attendance, poor test performance, etc. The early alert is sent to the student’s advisor or other appropriate campus resources. This resource connection is vital for students to get back on track academically and to improve the likelihood of overall collegiate success.
Director's Corner Each college within the University has its own team of professional academic advisors led by an advisement director. The four advisement directors and their contact information can be found below. Be sure to click here to learn more about the advisement directors and other OSS staff members! The Office of Student Success utilizes AppointmentPlus for scheduling appointments with advisors. Students can visit www.desu.edu/academics/student-success, click “Find Your Advisor,” then the “Schedule an Appointment with Your Advisor” button. Reach the page directly at https://booknow.appointmentplus.com/9enxn92m. In future issues, please check out this section for the directors’ updates on their various colleges, initiatives, and programs. Have questions about student success at DSU?
