ENGLISH (BA) Delaware State University teaches English literature from a global perspective. Students absorb the great works of Great Britain and the United States, from Shakespeare to the contemporary classics, and then go beyond to explore a wide range of literary voices, including women, immigrants, ethnic and racial minorities. Our program uses literature as a window into the diversity of human insight and experience — as well as the common themes that unite all people. The English program lays a strong, broad academic foundation, with required coursework in history, psychology, mathematics, and foreign languages. Students develop superior writing and critical thinking skills, which can be applied across many different career paths. At bottom, literature is the study of the human condition — all humans, of every race, color, and creed. PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION. Graduate school is a common option for students who graduate from the English program — either for continued studies in writing and literature, or for advanced degrees in law, business, government, journalism, or education. Graduates who go directly in the workforce can market their strengths in writing and communication, as well as their multicultural perspective and solid background in many liberal arts disciplines.

ENGLISH WITH A WRITING CONCENTRATION (BA) The Writing Concentration is designed for English majors who want to pursue writing routes in their careers. While the program offers the flexibility to take creative writing courses, the concentration’s focus is on rhetoric, composition, and professional writing. Core program courses include digital writing, editing, advanced composition, technical writing, writing in the disciplines, theories and practices in writing and peer tutoring, among others. Students typically complete an internship with local partners and develop a writing portfolio. PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION. This concentration gives students solid disciplinary preparation in the field of writing studies so that they can apply for graduate studies in writing and rhetoric or take writing jobs upon graduation.

International Studies BA, AA AND MINOR Degrees within the International Studies program prepare students to become global leaders in a wide range of careers in areas such as government, international service, law, education, and research. The program is designed with a broad interdisciplinary focus that encourages students to develop an understanding of cultural relativity as they study language, global cultures, international policies, and social, historical, political, environmental, and economic issues through the lens of diverse perspectives. The minor is open for students from any discipline to prepare for an international career.

English & Foreign Languages ENGLISH & WRITING MINORS ENGLISH | All students who select a minor in English must complete the following requirements: English 105, 204, 301 or 302, 305, 306 or 307, 311, and 403. WRITING | The Writing Minor in English is designed for students — majoring in any discipline — who intend to augment their writing and critical thinking skills. Core program courses include digital writing, editing, advanced composition, technical writing, writing in the disciplines, theories and practices in writing, and peer tutoring, among others. Students can take creative writing courses, develop a writing portfolio, and pursue a career in writing. This minor requires 16 credit hours of writing-intensive courses beyond the first-year rhetoric and composition classes.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE MINORS The foreign language minors — French and Spanish — cultivate students into bilingual global citizens through the development of linguistic, cultural, social, and historical competence in the target language and culture(s).

TELL (TEACHER OF ENGLISH LEARNERS) MINOR This minor is designed to provide students expertise and training on the theory and practice of teaching English to non-native speakers of English and/or bilingual learners. It is open to all students; however, education majors who enroll also complete all requirements to teach in K-12 Multilingual Learner (MLL) or dual language immersion classrooms and obtain Delaware Department of Education secondary certification in either “1562 Teacher of English Learners” or “1561 Bilingual Teacher.”

PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION. The program develops globally responsible citizens who have an informed concern for human rights, social justice, and other international ethical challenges, with a clear understanding on how to actively engage in finding, supporting, and implementing solutions. Possible career options include International Partnerships Manager, Political Analyst, Immigration Officer, Public Policy, Diplomacy, Political Affairs, Education, Foreign Service Officer, Language Analyst, Civil Service, Government Social Research, International Aid/Development, Congressional Aide, Consular/Embassy Assistant, and Humanitarian Relief.

Other Learning Options CERTIFICATE OF MULTILITERACY The University’s new Certificate of Multiliteracy gives students the opportunity to document their language proficiency. Through additional transcript documentation, paired with the Global Seal of Biliteracy, the certificate offers students a competitive edge in a growing global economy by showcasing their language proficiency with a language credential and digital badges. The certificate may be completed through courses, prior language learning or language testing.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE The ELI provides intensive English language instruction for pre-matriculated students who are seeking to improve their English before enrolling in undergraduate and graduate studies at an American university. The comprehensive curriculum and program prepares students for academic and personal success through language and culture instruction and opportunities to engage and interact with current students and the community.
