IASS Integrated Academic Support Services
Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS) provides students with a holistic approach to tutorial and SI sessions, rather than a “quick fix just give me the answer”session. Our tutors, writing consultants, and Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders assist students with the development of their writing, quantitative reasoning, and content-based learning, as well as empower students with confidence to become independent and active learners.
Tutors, writing consultants, and SI leaders are highly qualified; they have successfully taken the courses, been recommended by faculty, and meet minimum GPA requirements. Tutors, writing consultants, and SI leaders attend training and professional development workshops giving them tools to facilitate one-on-one or small groups utilizing multiple learning strategies and to apply study and note-taking skills in sessions.
Integrated Academic Support Services are FREE and for all Delaware State University students. IASS is comprised of in-person and virtual tutorial sessions with DSU tutors and Tutor.com, an online tutoring service.
STUDENTS WHO ATTEND TUTORIAL AND SI SESSIONS CAN EXPECT:
• To be engaged in activities to reinforce the concepts.
• To experience a comfortable environment that promotes active learning.
• To learn from peers: one-to-one or in small groups.
• To develop effective study skills strategies and to prepare for tests.
STUDENTS WHO ATTEND TUTORIAL AND SI SESSIONS SHOULD:
• Arrive to sessions and appointments on time.
• Bring a copy of the writing assignment from their instructor, textbook, notebook, class notes and assignments, handouts and pen/pencil.
• Come prepared having made a true attempt at assignments — read course material, outline topics, and highlight specific questions.
• Have a positive attitude — learn what to learn while learning how to learn.
To schedule in-person or virtual tutorial appointments with DSU tutors in the Quantitative Reasoning Center (QRC), Tutorial Center or Writing Studio, visit https://desu.campus.eab.com.
QUANTITATIVE REASONING CENTER (QRC)
QRC tutors help improve the persistence and success of students in math courses ranging from Developmental Math to Calculus and higher-level maths. All students are encouraged to utilize the center where tutors facilitate the reinforcement of math and critical thinking concepts in a small-group setting. Students become more confident in their learning and apply the reasoning skills to other courses.

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI)
SI leaders are assigned to courses that are deemed historically difficult. The SI leader’s role is to attend all class sessions and to organize at least two study group sessions per week outside of class.
All students are encouraged to attend SI study-group sessions. The sessions are an opportunity for students to learn in an inclusive and non-intimidating environment with their peers. The SI leaders come to the sessions prepared with activities and learning strategies to reinforce difficult course concepts, to promote and model effective study strategies, and to form a network of study partners. SI sessions engage students, which allows them to go to class prepared with a better understanding of the course material, and thereby, are able to enrich discussions in class.
Location and hours of SI sessions will be announced in class and via social media by the SI leader.
TUTORIAL CENTER
Tutors help improve the persistence and success of students in a variety of courses: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish, French, Psychology, Business, and others. All students are encouraged to utilize the center where tutors facilitate the reinforcement of concepts in a small-group setting. Students become more confident in their learning, are more apt to contribute to class discussions, and ultimately, are able to transfer the knowledge when seeking professional opportunities.

WRITING STUDIO
Writing consultants are exemplary peer educators who help students strengthen their writing skills for any course across the curriculum. Writing consultants assist in modes of rhetoric and composition, brainstorming, thesis development, mechanics, organization, documentation styles, capstones, and personal statements.
Through use of a balanced approach to tutorial that incorporates both minimalist and directive methods, the Writing Studio encourages academic integrity and helps students maintain autonomy of authorship. As a result, students reach self-discovery and experience increased confidence in their writing and in their understanding of the instructor’s expectations. Individual and small group consultations are available to current Delaware State University students and staff. The Writing Studio renders services by appointment or walk-in consultation.
