William C. Jason
Main Campus Library Namesake
William C. Jason was born in 1859 in Trappe, Maryland. After attaining undergraduate and graduate degrees in Divinity, Jason served as a Methodist preacher. In 1895, Jason became the second President, and the first AfricanAmerican to hold the position, at the State College for Colored Students (later renamed Delaware State College in 1947 and Delaware State University in 1993). He served in this capacity until 1923. His tenure was punctuated by expansive growth in both the student body and campus infrastructure. After retiring from the presidency, Reverend Jason continued to serve the college as a Chaplain until 1941.
