The Office of Student Success introduces students to their college experience by providing a collegial and academically enriched environment. As the point of entry for all incoming undergraduate students, our support programs facilitate ongoing student engagement, while promoting intellectual growth and development. The Office of Student Success encourages social integration through a variety of programs designed to assist students in succeeding from entry to graduation.

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

The Office of Student Success is the point of entry for all undergraduate students. The student advising structure is designed to:

 Create a deeper understanding of our academic policies and procedures.

 Enhance the information flow with academic planning, alternate pathways (when appropriate) and early degree-program guidance.

The purpose of academic advising is to empower students to realize their maximum educational potential. The Office of Student Success’ advising process is a student-centered approach that desires each student to gain a clearer understanding of him/herself and the postsecondary (or college) experience.

Individual Development Plan (IDP)

During the freshman year, we assist students in formulating an educational plan and introduce them to career goals that are closely aligned to their academic interests. Academic advisors partner with students to develop an Individual Development Plan, a comprehensive student planning tool that charts first-year steps toward identifying and establishing interests, goals, majors and career pathways toward academic success.

Embedded with ongoing relationships with advisors, faculty, staff and peers, each student will be able to personalize his or her campus experiences while developing attitudes and behaviors reflective of the University’s Core Values.

Transfer Advising

The Transfer Advising Office supports students during their matriculation to Delaware State University by serving as a conduit between Enrollment Management (Undergraduate Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Registrar) and the Office of Student Success.

The transfer advisor serves as the student’s primary advisor for the first year to ensure an efficient credit evaluation, scheduling/registration and advisement process. The Transfer Advising Office is located in the William C. Jason Library, Room 221A.

15 Strong to Completion

The 15 Strong to Completion campaign promotes a standard that encourages students to complete a minimum of 15 credit hours of course work per semester to complete their degree program in four years — on time!

INTEGRATED ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES (IASS)

Integrated Academic Support Services are FREE for all Delaware State University students. IASS is comprised of in-person and virtual tutorial sessions with DSU tutors and Tutor.com, an online tutoring service.

 Tutorial Center | Tutors help improve the persistence and success of students in a variety of courses. All students seeking extra assistance can come to the Tutorial Center to request a tutor.

 Quantitative Reasoning Center (QRC) | QRC tutors help improve the persistence and success of students in math courses ranging from Developmental Math to Calculus. Students may come to the QRC for drop-in math tutoring by qualified peer educators.

 Writing Studio | Writing consultants help students strengthen their writing skills for any course across the curriculum in modes of rhetoric and composition, brainstorming, thesis development, mechanics, organization, documentation styles, capstones and personal statements.

Supplemental Instruction | SI leaders are assigned to courses that are deemed historically difficult. The SI leader’s role is to attend all class sessions and to organize at least two study group sessions per week outside of class. All students are encouraged to attend SI study-group sessions. SI leaders come prepared to sessions with focused plans and activities for students to be engaged in reinforcing and applying concepts.

 Online Tutorial Sessions | Tutor.com is a free 24/7 online tutoring tool that all students can easily access through Blackboard for subjects in math, science, history, accounting, languages, writing across curriculum, and many more.

 Computer Lab | Computer labs are available in the Writing Studio and Tutorial Center of both the main and DSU Downtown campuses. These labs provide desktop computers for students to utilize in completing their coursework during the open hours of our centers.

COURSES, PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS

University Seminar is a two semester general education course sequence designed to provide students with the essentials for a smooth transition to college life and academic success.

 Credit-Bearing Courses | Learning Strategies, University Seminar I and II

 Student Success Workshops | The Office of Student Success offers academic programs and workshops throughout the semester. These programs are open to all students at Delaware State University and are designed to assist with some of the common challenges that college students face, as well as build upon our students’ existing strengths.

Honors Program

The University’s Honors Program provides talented and motivated students opportunities for intellectual growth and achievement in small, challenging classes that encourage active intellectual participation, discussion and collaboration in the search for knowledge.

Academic Recovery Program

The Academic Recovery Program is a mandatory support program for all students on academic probation (AP), as well as students who are readmitted from suspension (RS). The overall goal of the Academic Recovery Program is to retain and return these students to good academic standing. The program is designed to promote effective academic practices and social behaviors. Students are enrolled in the three-credit course Learning Strategies for Academic Success, a mandatory support class for all students on academic probation as well as students who are readmitted from suspension. The students are identified each semester by the Registrar through the Banner System.

Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA)

Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA), housed on the 2nd Floor of the William C. Jason Library, serves as the academic arm of Delaware State University Athletics. The unit houses five full-time staff members, including a Senior Associate Athletic Director and four Academic Counselors. Academic Services for Student-Athletes serves approximately 300 scholarship and non-scholarship athletes in 19 NCAA Division I sports.

Library Services

The goal of the Delaware State University Libraries is to provide library resources and services to meet the academic needs of the University community, to develop well-rounded and responsible citizens, and to encourage library users to discover their creative capacities. The library is committed to creating an environment for active learning, disciplinary research, and scholarly collaboration, allowing the library to provide research resources and support access that follows an anytime, anywhere, any device philosophy. We also encourage members of the general public to borrow our physical items. Current locations include the William C. Jason Library on the main campus and the Robert H. Parker Library on the DSU Downtown campus.
