If you’re a beginning student who wants to pursue a career in nursing, the Department of Nursing at Delaware State University has a course of study to meet your needs. Preparing for professional nursing practice requires a commitment to scholarly pursuit in the areas of math, reading, critical thinking, humanities, natural and social sciences, nursing theory and related clinical practice along with the determination to be successful. The four-year nursing curriculum at Delaware State University and its talented faculty — a diverse mix of doctorally prepared nurses and clinical practitioners — provide the knowledge and training you need to help you achieve your career and education goals. The Nursing Program readies students for registered nurse positions, administrative positions, clinical specializations, consulting careers, graduate study and more. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the licensing examination (NCLEX-RN) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to become an RN.

NURSING CURRICULUM Delaware State University’s nursing curriculum consists of four academic years leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with a nursing major. Upper division nursing courses include both nursing theory and related laboratory and clinical study. Medical-surgical nursing, maternal-child nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing, community health nursing, and nursing research and leadership are among the upper-level courses that students take. Health agencies including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, community health settings and schools in the Delaware area provide settings for the practice of professional nursing care. Clinical practice is also available in the simulated laboratory in the Department of Nursing.


ABOUT THE NURSING PROGRAM At Delaware State University, you’ll find a Nursing Program grounded in academic excellence that prepares professional nurses at the baccalaureate degree level to provide high quality nursing care to individuals, families and communities in a variety of health care settings. In addition to preparing competent professional nurses, Delaware State University’s program also aims to:  meet the learning needs of a culturally diverse student population  develop an educational base for future specialization and/or graduate study in nursing.

CAMPUS ACTIVITIES All nursing students are eligible to become members of the Delaware State University Student Nurses’ Association. Students may also be invited for membership in the Delaware State University Nursing Honor Society after successful completion of the junior year of the Nursing Program with a 3.0 GPA and in the top one-third of the class.

HOW TO GET STARTED Each applicant to Delaware State University’s Nursing Program must follow the University’s general admission procedures. Prospective nursing majors should have taken high school chemistry, biology and mathematics. Accepted incoming freshmen are admitted as pre-nursing majors. During the sophomore year, pre-nursing students who meet Nursing Program criteria apply for admission to the professional phase of the Nursing Program.
