Twin brothers got it covered Simpsons advance to contest semi-finals BY

The Simpson Brothers have moved on to the semi-finals of a RyanSeacrest.com cover song contest. The twin Tsawwassen brothers, Rich and Rob, teamed up with singer Jerrica Santos and composer, producer and pianist Trevor Hoffman to cover Ellie Goulding’s hit single Burn. “We’re very excited to have reached the semi-finals for our video cover,” they said in an email to the Optimist. “Though we’ve been surprised in some ways about the success we’ve seen over the course of the contest, we know that we are capable of creating content that will resonate with people and are thrilled to be receiving such support from fans, friends and family.” Their video is one of seven still remaining in the contest, which asks website visitors to vote for their favourite video. Online voting for the semi-finals closes on

Tuesday, Feb. 11. The final round launches Wednesday, Feb. 12. “As for reaching the final round of the competition, we’re confident that we have what it takes to make it through and even win, but by no means underestimate the other individuals and groups that have been recognized. There’s clearly a lot of talent being featured and we’re thrilled to be among such company.” While their cover video entry has almost reached 100,000 views on YouTube, the brothers are seeing an increase in social media exposure as a result of the contest, with their other content on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter receiving boosts as well. Mayor ‘Lois’ gets a furry namesake BY

Mayor Lois Jackson was on hand at the Ladner fire hall this week to meet her namesake — a nine-week old black Lab. The canine Lois is a B.C. Guide Dogs puppy sponsored by the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society. Firefighter John Burr said when the society decided to sponsor a second puppy it knew it wanted to name it after the mayor. At the time, he said, the group did not

know if it would be a male or female so firefighters decided on Lois for a girl and Jackson for a boy. When they approached the mayor about using her name for the pup, Burr said, “She was more than thrilled about it.” This is the second puppy from Delta-based B.C. Guide Dogs the firefighters have sponsored, but the society has been helping with donations since 1998. At just nine weeks, Lois still has a ways to go before she can become a full-fledged guide dog.

She will be with her puppy raiser Mike Whitty, who has raised six puppies for the organization, until she is 15 months old. After that she will move on to another family, who will take care of her while she undergoes guide dog training. Once she is trained, which takes about 20 weeks, Lois will most likely go on to be a guide dog for an autistic child or blind person. For more information about B.C. The new single-lane configuration of the Highway 17A ramp to the George Massey Tunnel has local motorists upset. Delta Municipal Hall has been flooded with complaints by residents angered over delays trying to get around the cloverleaf and onto northbound Highway 99. The exit from Highway 17A (called Highway 17 until the South Fraser Perimeter Road took over the name last December) had been two lanes, but that changed with the opening of SFPR. Now those using the cloverleaf must stay in the right lane to get onto Highway 99. It’s meant longer, slower lines for those trying to get to the tunnel, say some drivers, especially Ladner motorists who don’t have another option. The complaint was discussed at Delta council’s meeting this week. Engineering director Stephen Lan noted the public should be aware it’s a provincial project under Ministry of Transportation jurisdiction, so Delta doesn’t have any control. “All we can do is provide our comments back in terms of the concerns on behalf of our residents. Certainly we’ve had feed-

Lan said a staff report would come to council next month examining traffic pattern changes as a result of SFPR. The Highway 17A ramp will be one of the issues covered. Things, however, are already starting to ease up, according SFPR project director Geoff Freer, who noted that after the SFPR opened, early traffic counts indicated a significant number of drivers from Tsawwassen, as well as ferry traffic, had still been using Highway 17A to get to the tunnel.

He said driving habits are starting to change as more drivers realize the SFPR does save time on their commute. “Some people have figured out that taking Highway 17A takes about as long as SFPR to reach the tunnel by around 7 a.m, but then after that they’re seeing the new highway is a significantly faster option,” said Freer. “We did a lot of counts before SFPR opened and we’re doing a lot of counts after. This is what you do always when there’s a new road opening,” he said. “What’s been happening over the last three weeks of January is that traffic numbers on 17A have been

slowly declining in the morning rush and SFPR traffic has been going up.” Freer noted the singlelane exit is more than enough to accommodate Ladner traffic, even during the morning rush. He also said the evolving plans to improve traffic flow include dedicating the middle lane on Highway 17A for River Road-bound traffic only, ensuring those wanting to access the tunnel stay in the right lane. Naturally, traffic flow will greatly improve with five lanes in each direction when the tunnel is replaced by a bridge, Freer said. Meanwhile, geotechnical, environmental and engineering work is getting

underway for the bridge that will eventually replace the tunnel. “The business case and project definition report, which will include concepts for the bridge and Highway 99 corridor, will be completed in spring 2014,” another Ministry of Transportation spokesperson told the Optimist. “Government will also continue to consult with Metro Vancouver municipalities and TransLink as the project moves forward.” Construction is to begin in 2017, but no definitive timeline as been offered as of yet. Last year the government confirmed it wants to build a bridge and scrap the existing tunnel.

Police issue alert after spike in thefts from vehicles

Delta police are once again reminding the public to remove personal belongings after another spike in thefts from vehicles in Ladner and Tsawwassen. Many of the vehicles were unlocked when the thefts occurred. “Anytime you leave something in your vehicle

— even if it does not seem valuable to you — it entices thieves into your neighbourhood,” said Sgt. Sarah Swallow. “While we always recommend locking your vehicle and making sure anything valuable is out of sight, it is really best practice to remove anything that is portable from your car

before securing it.” Swallow said a rash of six vehicle break-ins in one night in Ladner and Tsawwassen prompted the warning. Commonly stolen items include loose change, garage door openers and clothing, however during the recent spate of thefts in

South Delta, one resident had a birthday cake taken from their vehicle. Swallow said there are a few different ways to protect your vehicle from thefts: • Use a steering wheel club or other anti-theft device. • Park your car in a well

A local woman recently got a big surprise with her usual coffee. It was Thanksgiving Day last year and Christine McMillan had volunteered to go into work on the holiday. As she does everyday, the 38-year-old pharmacy

technician stopped at the Ladner McDonald’s drivethru for a coffee. McDonald’s was running its annual Monopoly promotion at the time and when McMillan peeled off the Boardwalk and Park Place game stamps on her coffee cup, she was shocked to see she won the $100,000 grand prize.

“Like any other day, I grabbed a coffee at the McDonald’s drive-thru on my way into work,” she said. “I would never have guessed I could win this much money on something I buy every day.” The Ladner McDonald’s celebrated this week by donating $1 from every

coffee purchased on Wednesday to B.C.’s Ronald McDonald House. As well, owner Stephen Krawchuk, who is also on the Ronald McDonald House B.C. board, will also be presenting the house with a $5,000 cheque from proceeds of coin donation boxes at each of his locations.

Federal funding will available for the public and Aboriginal groups to participate in an environmental review of the proposed Terminal 2 container facility at Roberts Bank. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency announced Thursday that funding would be available through its Participant Funding Program to eligible individuals and groups to participate in a panel environmental assessment. The public will have a chance to review and

provide comments on the review panel’s terms of reference and the project’s environmental impact statement as well as participate in the public hearing. T2 is a proposed threeberth container terminal that would be constructed on a new man-made island adjacent to the existing Deltaport container terminal. The new facility would provide additional capacity to meet forecasted demand on the West Coast. Bleary-eyed and dogtired right through to the bone, Tsawwassen’s own Seattle Seahawks superfan stumbled into work Tuesday morning a deliriously happy man. Teacher Ryan Strachan managed to steal just a couple of hours’ sleep after flying in from New York and was running on adrenalin only by the time he returned to his desk at RC Palmer Secondary in Richmond. But it mattered not a jot to lifetime and previously long-suffering Seahawks fan Strachan, 41, whose blood was still coursing through his veins in the wake of his team’s Super Bowl rout over the hapless Denver Broncos Sunday. “Not in a million years did I, or any of us, think that would be the score,” said Strachan, who only managed to live out his dream of watching the Seahawks at a Super Bowl thanks to former students raising $1,500 via Facebook.

And on our seats was a package with things like a blanket, gloves and a toque with LED lights on it. “At half-time, the toques’ lights lit up and were remotely controlled to coincide with the show.” Strachan couldn’t take more time off to go see the ‘Hawks parade the Super Bowl through Seattle on Wednesday morning. That privilege is being handed to his fellow fan and wife, Tamara.

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week: Ladner • Jan. 27, 6:15 a.m.,

Crescent Drive: Sometime during the day suspects entered a residence through an unlocked side door to the garage. As the interior door of the home was also unlocked, the suspects gained entrance to the main house and stole several personal electronic items. The doors to the residence were accidentally left unlocked by the homeowners. • Jan. 28, 8:53 p.m., 5500-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A group of four males was located with a bottle of vodka. As the bottle was open, the vodka

was seized for disposal. The males were cooperative with police. None of the males appeared to have consumed the vodka and left the area without incident. • Jan. 31, 11:30 p.m., 5700-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Report received that two males were heard talking very loudly and a female scream a couple of minutes later. Police attended and located an intoxicated female who was being assisted by the two males.

The males had contacted the mother of the female who arrived and took custody of her daughter. • Jan. 31, 10:20 p.m., 5000-block of 44th Avenue: A Crime Watch member reported there were approximately 100 youths congregating on the grounds of Ladner Elementary and advised they appeared to be drinking and breaking things. Police attended but the youths had dispersed and were walking the streets

without creating any disturbance. Tsawwassen • Jan. 27, 11:50 p.m., 1900-block of 16th Avenue: Police responded to an alarm at a restaurant. As the front door of the restaurant was found smashed, a containment of the area was setup. On entering the restaurant it was found the suspects had left through the back door. In this case, nothing was stolen from the restaurant but police want to remind business owners not to leave any valuable computer equipment, tip jars or cash floats in visible or unlocked areas. • Jan. 29, 6 p.m., Centennial Parkway: Report received from complainant that she had arrived home after a five-hour absence and found her dogs going crazy. A search of the home found the side door had been pried open but nothing had been stolen from the

residence. • Jan. 30, 11 a.m., 56th Street: There were four reports of graffiti to businesses overnight. Some of the tags were large, reading “DUP,” “STANK,” “EARN,” “MOLAR” and “GROM.” Police took photos of the graffiti to cross-reference with their files. Removal of graffiti is expensive and time consuming for business owners and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Delta Police Department. • Jan. 31, 10:29 a.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported a male had just entered the store and stolen cosmetic and medicinal items before fleeing in a grey Ford Focus driven by a female. Police were able to obtain the licence plate number of the vehicle and the surveillance footage from within the store.

MURPHY’S LAW If this is an attempt to win over voters for this fall’s referendum, TransLink might want to re-examine the approach. The transit authority is holding an open house in Ladner next week to discuss what are being termed as “service modifications” to a pair of local bus routes. Modification is a nice way of saying you’ll soon have to make an additional transfer if you use either the 606/608 or 404 routes. Plans for the 606/608 are for it to no longer go all the way to the Bridgeport Station, necessitating passengers transfer to or from the 601, while the 404, which provides connection from Ladner to the Brighouse Station, soon won’t go through the George Massey Tunnel any more. I recognize TransLink is always on the lookout for efficiencies, trying to make the best use of a finite amount of money, so the fact the South Delta routes have comparatively low ridership numbers and higher average cost per passenger rates makes them prime targets to be modified. From the outside looking in it all makes perfect economic sense, but when you’re hoping to retain riders, and even attract new ones, it hardly seems like the way to do it. If I understand it correctly, Ladner passengers that catch the 608 bus in the morning now get dropped off at the Bridgeport Station where they transfer to the Canada Line. After the modifications kick in, they’ll have to transfer to the 601 at the Ladner Exchange and then again to the Canada Line at Bridgeport. When it takes two buses and a train to get from Ladner to Downtown Vancouver, I suspect the vast majority of passengers will be those who have no other choice but to take transit because it’s certainly not set up to attract riders to the system. If you have the automobile option, I suspect most would embrace it over the convoluted alternative. To be fair to TransLink, it’s going to spend money where it gets the most bang for its buck, which certainly isn’t in single-family South Delta, where the cost per passenger is double the system-wide average. TransLink added about six million rides to the system in 2012 without additional investment simply by modifying routes and reinvesting the savings where demand is greatest. The philosophy makes sense in the big picture, however watered down transit offerings are just going to exacerbate the situation in South Delta. And something tells me we won’t be in the mood this November to provide TransLink with more money to spend elsewhere.

Where will the shoppers come from for TFN’s mega malls? IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT The Tsawwassen First Nation held a press conference late last month to announce it was “full speed ahead” on the building of two malls on TFN land at 52nd Street and Highway 17. This traditional land was returned to the TFN under the treaty concluded a few years back. In the past year it has appeared as the largest sandbox in the Lower Mainland. What will be the impact of this project for TFN and for South Delta? Several of us are looking forward to a shopping bonanza — hundreds of new shops! While I sincerely hope for the best in the future for the cultural and economic advances for those who belong to TFN, I worry about the risks inherent in the scale and size of the project. There will be two malls, one of 1.2 million

square feet and a second one of half that size. So how big is that? How big is 1.8 million square feet of shopping? All four shopping areas together/combined in and around the centre of Tsawwassen at 56th Street and 12th Avenue are about 220,000 square feet. The TFN project is over eight times as big. Is it bigger than Lansdowne? Is it bigger than Richmond Centre? It’s bigger than both — combined — by a large margin! Perhaps you can relate to other locations better. How about Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre? TFN is bigger by 15 per cent. How about Vancouver’s Pacific Centre, Burnaby’s Metrotown or Toronto’s Eaton Centre? TFN is still bigger! It’s second only to West Edmonton Mall for size in Canada. The traffic needed to support such a size is a challenge. Compared to South Delta’s 40,000 souls, Richmond has a population of about 200,000 to support Lansdowne and Richmond Centre. Where will customers come from? Counting on the South Fraser Perimeter Road is questionable. You only have to drive it to

see all the industrial areas right out to the Golden Ears Bridge. Counting on B.C. Ferries passengers doing shopping runs from Victoria is just dreaming. If customers are slow to appear, then what? Without knowing the arrangement between the shopping centres and TFN, we can only speculate. I would suggest that construction costs would have to be repaid from rents before any significant funds flow back to TFN. If the mall business is not robust, that return could be a long time coming. Meanwhile, the impact on existing retail in Ladner and Tsawwassen will be severe. Shops will close as local competition for retail dollars gets aggressive. TFN is an independent governmental authority, much like a municipality. It makes its own decisions and is rebuilding a great place of wealth. We can only hope it is wise enough to avoid the calamity of grossly overbuilding these mega malls. If the TFN is correct and the malls succeed, it will be a case study for commerce students for a long time.

The good burghers of South Delta are the first ones to put up signs saying Farms Not Ports. Well, you’ve got farms and now you’re complaining about the smell. Well, you want farms, you get smells. Suck it up. John Rousseu

See you in 15.” I’m talking about the rights-hogging rider who gets on the bus and fills that public space, at volume, with private conversation for longer than an entire commute. Visitor at Delta Hospital witnesses healing benefits of music therapy

Editor: As I rounded the corner of the second floor at Delta Hospital to visit with my mom last week, I was greeted by the sweet sounds of an acoustic guitar being played somewhere down the hallway. As I approached my mother’s room, I could hear it coming from there, and as I entered, was greeted by Joanne Tait, the music therapist. She was midstream

“Besseme Mucho,” and the three senior ladies in the room were smiling and trilling along. Joanne asked if she should stop so I could visit with my mom, but no, I was as uplifted by her gift as were the gals. I should add the staff was all smiling as well. She played and we sang along, for about a halfhour, although I wasn’t really aware of time passing and could barely hold

back tears of immense gratitude. What a privilege to participate in and personally observe the healing benefits of music therapy. Of course, Joanne was brilliantly talented and kind. This program is no longer funded by Delta Hospital, but is sponsored by the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, which will certainly receive a donation from me. Sharon Edelmeier

The survey asks people aged 18 and over to provide information about their health, lifestyle, community involvement and neighbourhood characteristics. “The survey is confidential and safeguards the information collected,” said Sharma. “It asks a range of questions including whether or not we have safe places to walk and play, access to fruits and vegetables in our neighbourhood, work related and personal stresses, and whether we feel a sense

Judy Guido, a national director and certified instructor with the Inner Peace Movement of Canada, is presenting talks in Tsawwassen next week. During the talks participants will learn how to keep life simple, joyful and fun. They will experience the feeling of coming home and gain an understanding about their life purpose, the seven-year cycles of life and communication with their team of master souls. The sessions are set for Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 1 and 7 p.m. at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn.

They each run for 90 minutes and admission is $21. The Inner Peace Movement of Canada, a non-profit educational program, helps people expand their potential through practical tools and techniques for better living. It helps people communicate their message from the heart and contribute in a positive way to themselves, their community and their loved ones. Participants at next week’s talks will also hear about the four avenues of communication and will

have an opportunity to sense their own energy and the energy field (aura) around others. Weekly group sessions, in the community, are available on an ongoing basis for those wanting deeper involvement. Guido, a well-known Canadian educator in the field of self-awareness, inspires people to believe in themselves and unfold their potential by realizing there is no limit to what they can accomplish. Space for grace Lately I have been focusing on creating more spaces in my life, like time between events in my day. It hasn’t been easy. Recently two cars entered my safety space on the road between me and the car ahead. In response I had to slow down and create space again. As I backed off the gas, I extended grace to those ahead of me. As I create space in my day, I extend grace to myself. Instead of “Space, the Final Frontier,” I wonder if our continued life on the planet will depend on “Grace, the Final Frontier?” Considering grace as space I extend to others and to myself has helped me in my practice of it. Simply sitting in quiet for a set period of time daily helps to establish that safety space between me

Generations before me have called this practice meditation, with the goal of practicing the presence of God throughout the day by inhabiting the space of grace and extending that space to others. I am finding that simply easing off is better for me, and for those around me, including my family, those with whom I work and share the road. I wonder if this was the experience of the person who wrote the following, “You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place.” (Psalm 31:8)

(2) Have you two companies ever informed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the 22,000 Canadians who live in Tsawwassen, BC, next to your proposed 50,000 watt radio towers? Your high wattage transmitter, just 330 meters south of the Canadian border, will cover our community with harmful electromagnetic radiation causing blanketing interference that is not allowed by the FCC population density codes. Sher-E-Punjab Broadcasting Inc. and BBC Broadcasting Inc. - Let’s be clear, so that there is no confusion: Industry Canada and the FCC must be informed of the 22,000 people in Tsawwassen, BC, impacted by the harmful electromagnetic radiation, causing blanketing interference, from your proposed 50,000 watt KRPI 1550 AM radio towers just 330 meters south of the Canadian border. Nothing, absolutely nothing, short of this is acceptable.

Doug Towle to bring Santana tribute band to Genesis Theatre BY

oug Towle is bringing his Santana experience to Ladner on Valentine’s Day. Towle, who grew up in North Delta, will pay tribute to guitar legend Carlos Santana with his band Supernatural at Genesis Theatre. Expect to hear all of Santana’s big hits at the show. “Right from 1969 all the way up to the latest and greatest,” says Towle. Towle, who lives in Langley, has been playing guitar for 34 years. He grew up playing hard rock and then shifted to the acoustic scene for a decade and half, working full time in an acoustic Latin flamenco project. He started Supernatural a year ago. “I just missed playing the electric guitar a lot,” he says. Towle says he came up with the idea for the band while sitting in an airport in Dallas while on tour. “Two months later we hit rehearsals.” Things have gone well so far with the band and the group is “picking and choosing our shows a little bit,” he says. “I want it to be stage show. We’ve got a full multimedia presentation going on along with the show.”

The seven-piece group consists of Towle (guitar/ vocals), Pete Davyduck (bass), Lyndon Dewitt (percussion), Patrick Gavigan (vocals), Heidi McCurdy (vocals), Mike Michalkow (drums) and Brett Zeigler (keys).

The group is an “A team, as it were,” says Towle. “I’ve been around long enough that when I put this together I was able to cherry pick all my players,” he says. “Santana’s music crosses cultural boundaries and excites audiences worldwide. He is an architect of Latin rock and a true guitar hero,” the band’s website states. “Supernatural honors the man and his music.” Supernatural performs Friday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Romancing at Rowena’s Inn

Haven in Harrison Mills has been luring lovebirds since ‘95 BY

When Valentine’s Day rolls around, my husband pulls out all the stops. Candlelight dinners, longstemmed roses, heartshaped chocolate boxes — and always accompanied by a sentimental schmaltzy card. Although my romancing return usually pales in comparison to his, it sure won’t this year. Rolled up and tied with a bow is a scrolled certificate for an overnighter to our favourite haven in Harrison Mills. It’s a getaway gift that would impress Cupid — and without a doubt, will be one that raises our passion-meter a notch or two. Rowena’s Inn on the River, a two-hour drive from Vancouver, has been luring lovebirds since 1995, but the family’s roots of this English-style manor

were planted long before it was touted as a top-notch retreat. Successful timber baron and entrepreneur, Charles Nelson Pretty acquired the 64-hectare (160-acre) parcel of land from his father in 1924. And nearly 70 years later it was taken over by his children, Ivan Pretty and Betty-Anne Faulkner, who named the elegant estate after their beloved mother. When Ivan passed away in 2001, Betty-Anne became the sole owner. She and her husband, Doug Faulkner, along with her nephew Christopher Lepine, continue to oversee the business today — and it runs to a tee. Speaking of which, 18 holes of luscious greenery hug up alongside this the turn-of-the-century beauty. The Sandpiper Golf Course, designed by Russ Olsen, was actually a major drawing card for my husband

when he booked our first visit to Rowena’s. Yes, there is another side to my Romeo. It was my 50-something birthday and he was hoping to couple the special occasion with a little golf. We stayed in the manor house, where all five sumptuous guest rooms combine a piece of the past with creature comforts of the pres-

ent: fine antiques, thirsty robes, cushy beds (one of which belonged to the famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba). Each room is personalized and named after a family member and all boast a stunning panoramic view. “Check it out,” my husband had said after pulling back the drapes when we arrived. A jaw-dropping

river and mountain scene filled the backdrop and taking up the foreground were those manicured greens that were mesmerizing my mate. “Let’s book a tee time,” he had said without a flinch. “I’ve heard it’s the best course in the Fraser Valley and is designed for all abilities — even beginners.” Although this statement, geared towards my novice skill level, was an effective strategy, I had a different kind of tea time in mind before venturing out onto those undulating fairways. High tea is available every afternoon in the manor’s Drawing Room and while surrounded by woven tapestries and pristine heirlooms, we sipped the finest blends and dined on a delicious spread that’s literally steeped with tradition. Mealtime is also featured throughout the day at River’s Edge Restaurant,

where chef Jonathan Gee and his team of culinary magicians transform locally-grown ingredients into fabulous flavours. Yes, between doing laps in the outdoor pool, soothing in the hot tub and eyeing the plethora of soaring eagles, my hubby was successful in luring me onto the links. And in spite of losing a few balls to the Harrison River and a couple to a stand of century-old Douglas fir, I figured I came out ahead. In fact, as time will soon tell, so did my husband. For it was here, while swinging on the signature hole, that I got the inspiration for this Valentine’s Day gift. Plant breeders are also tackling solutions to climate problems. In small garden spaces, ornamental vegetables are a wonderful bonus (at least until you harvest them). Peppermint chard is ahead of this game since you can cut-and-come-again until frost. Its stems are red at the base merging up into white. For container gardeners, this type of food crop is very practical. Cos lettuces such as the red-tinged Paris Island can also keep on producing for many weeks if you harvest the oldest, outside leaves first. I have also seen red cabbage used this way in containers. Coloured carrots are always offered separately, but some catalogues list a Rainbow blend of carrots that gives a long harvest since different kinds mature at various times. Beet collections in mixed colours also offer the same extended harvest. There’s also the new cauliflower Graffiti, which is said to be deep purple and shows an improved tolerance for heat. 2014 Bus Service Optimization Open House

A new collection from longtime editorial cartoonist Adrian Raeside is due out this spring from Harbour Publishing. Taylor Bamford has spent her entire high school career in near obscurity and she doesn’t mind one bit. At a school that features provincial championship calibre girls volleyball and field hockey programs, Bamford’s passion has always been basketball. The senior at South Delta secondary was introduced to the game in Grade 4 through the local Steve Nash League and was eventually good enough to play on Basketball B.C.’s provincial teams — winning Western Canadian championships with the U15 and U16 squads. While the Sun Devils’ volleyball team repeated as provincial AAAA champions and the field hockey squad earned silver last fall, something has to give with only so many female student athletes at the school. When Bamford arrived at SDSS, there weren’t even enough players to have a Grade 8 team. She aged up to play junior and is now winding down her days as a Sun Devil. South Delta plays in the Fraser Valley tier two league and is enjoying a solid season, finishing in first place with a 6-2 record despite a 47-45 loss to Panorama Ridge on Wednesday night. The playoffs will be a challenge as advancing through the tier two playoffs means potentially meeting up with tier one Fraser Valley opponents which includes provincial heavyweights Brookswood and Riverside. “I had lots of good experiences with Basketball B.C. so I don’t regret my sport, as tempting as it was to be part

Tsawwassen Blues’ Mia Simpson makes a move on a Sur-Del opponent during B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League U16 Group One Cup action last Sunday in North Delta Simpson scored three goals as the Blues rolled to a 5-0 victory to remain perfect in round-robin cup play. Next up is showdown with Chilliwack in a battle of 3-0 teams.

Delta’s Devy Dyson and Julian Geisler are among 40 B.C. gymnasts who will be competing at this weekend’s annual artistic Elite Canada meet in Gatineau, Que. Competition kicks off on Friday and runs through Sunday with medals up for grabs in novice, junior and senior events for both men and women. Geisler and Dyson will both be compet-

ing at the senior men’s level. They currently train out of Langley Gymnastics and Richmond Gymnastics respectively. Results from Elite Canada, along with the Canadian championships in May, will count heavily in team selection for major upcoming international events this year, including the Commonwealth Games and Senior Pan American Championships.
