Victim posed threat: officer

Response to civil lawsuit offers insight into fatal shooting that resulted in murder charge BY

The Delta police officer charged with second-degree murder following a police standoff in New Westminster three years ago claims the victim posed a threat to him and other officers.

In his response to the civil suit launched last year by Mehrdad Bayrami’s daughter, Const. Jordan MacWilliams is claiming he fired his rifle after the victim pointed his gun at him and other officers. MacWilliams, who was a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team at the

Curbs are sure to be cluttered in South Delta this weekend with Spring Clean-Up just around the corner. Many residents will take advantage of the annual program that temporarily waives normal garbage volume limits to do some spring cleaning. This year’s clean-up days are set for Monday, April 13 in Tsawwassen and Tuesday, April 14 in Ladner. Spring Clean-Up is being held the following week in North Delta. There are some restrictions to what can be left at the curb, including the amount of garbage set out cannot exceed a pick-up truck load. Accepted items include furniture, most large appliances, scrap metal as well as miscellaneous household items that have been bagged or bundled. Scrap metal will be picked up after the non-recyclable items. There are a number of items not accepted for collection, including mattresses and box springs, light fixtures, tires, liquids of any type, home electronics, glass, construction material and more. Many of the items not accepted during Spring Clean-Up are recyclable. For more information about recycling options, call 604-RECYCLE. For more information about Spring Clean-Up, visit www. delta.ca, call 604-946-3260 or email engineering@delta.ca.

Liberals and New Democrats are already at work as they face an uphill battle to unseat the Conservative incumbent in this fall’s federal election. MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, the minister of national revenue, has already announced she will seek reelection in the newly-reconfigured riding of Delta, but the names of her opponents are still to be determined. Findlay, a newcomer to federal politics in the 2011 election, made short work of the opposition in Delta-Richmond East by capturing 54.2 per cent of the vote. She continued a tradition of right wing dominance in the area that dates back four decades, including an 18-year run by former Conservative MP John Cummins. Findlay easily outdistanced the NDP’s Nic Slater (23.3 per cent) and Liberal Alan Beesley (16.9 per cent) as well as three other candidates. Fast forward four years and it remains to be seen how things will turn out as this fall’s election will be contested under new electoral boundaries potentially changing the voting dynamic. The redrawn electoral map no longer has a joint Delta-Richmond riding. South Delta, which was part of Delta-Richmond East, now joins North Delta, formerly part of Newton-North Delta, in a new riding sim-

The Liberals and NDP believe things could play out much differently in the new riding of Delta this fall. ply called Delta. Bruce McDonald, a municipal councillor who’s on the executive of the Liberal riding association for Delta, said at least six potential candidates have taken out nomination papers and that a nomination meeting will take place sometime this spring. McDonald, who already indicated he won’t be putting his name forward as a candidate, said he’s not sure if there’s a new “Trudeaumania” with new leader Justin Trudeau, but said the polls look promising. Noting he vows to do everything he can fight

LAWSUIT from page 1 way, officers set up a 20metre containment area around Bayrami. The perimeter included officers positioned with less lethal measures and MacWilliams assigned to the role of lethal overwatch for his team. In that role, it was his responsibility to provide cover for other officers and to use necessary force if a threat of death of grievous

bodily harm was posed. According to MacWilliams’ statement, after a considerable amount of time standing in the same spot, Bayrami began walking toward the officers. The commanding officer then ordered the officers to use the less lethal measures, which consisted of a noise and flash diversionary device and a anti-riot

the Harper government’s anti-terrorist Bill C-51, McDonald said there’s more interest in the Liberals in general in the riding. “I do believe there’s more interest and I also believe that people are little happier that the mudslinging that the Conservatives seem to always do doesn’t seem to be sticking. They went after (former leader Michael) Ignatieff and you couldn’t turn around without someone making jokes. We’re talking about an intelligent, outstanding Canadian who was just destroyed by that machine,” said McDonald. “It doesn’t seem to be happening with Trudeau

and one of the reasons is he doesn’t let anything go by, he responds to everything,” he added. Slater, president of the NDP’s Delta riding association, told the Optimist the party is hoping to have a nomination meeting by the end of April, but no potential candidates have been announced. He said several individuals have expressed interest, noting the party’s national headquarters must also vet potential candidates. Slater said the party’s chances will be much better in the upcoming election thanks to the new riding boundaries. He said the

NDP will pour more money and resources into the riding now that the party has a shot at making even greater inroads. Slater said the Liberals will likely rebound to a degree in Delta from the last election while the Conservatives will lose votes. He added the “million dollar question” will be how much support the Conservatives lose. Glen Sanford, the B.C.’s NDP campaign director, said they’re in the process of recruiting candidates and “some really promising folks are stepping up and showing interest.” The election is Oct. 19.

weapon that fires non-lethal rounds. It was at this time, MacWilliams claims, that Mayrami leveled his gun at him and the other officers with his finger on or near the trigger. Fearing that one or more of the officers could be shot, MacWilliams made the decision to fire his rifle. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) launched an investigation following the shooting and

Bayrami’s death 10 days later. In 2013, chief civilian director Richard Rosenthal forwarded a report to Crown counsel. As a result of the report, last October the Crown announced a second-degree murder charge against MacWilliams. A judge has been assigned in that case and a trial could take place as early as this fall. Just this week, Bayrami’s hostage came forward hailing MacWilliams as her

hero and saying he should not be facing charges. In an interview with The Province, Tetiana Piltsina called the charges unfair. “This young policeman has to be released from all these accusations,” she said in speaking for the first time since the incident. Piltsina also said she was never interviewed by police or the IIO, and even tried to contact them to give her perspective on what happened that morning.

Abandoned vehicle leads to arrest of woman at Tsaw. ferry terminal The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to lastweek: Tsawwassen • April 2, 4:34 p.m., 5000-block of 9th Avenue: A third-party complainant reported a male had pushed an unknown female. The complainant did not witness the incident but provided a description based on what he had been told. An extensive search was conducted but no one matching the description was located. • April 2, 500-block of Allen Drive: Complainant reported two youth had thrown eggs at her home. The suspects returned to

the home at which time the complainant’s husband detained one of the two males. The male was intoxicated and told them the name of the other suspect. Police transported the male to his residence and parents advised. • April 3, 5:36 p.m., 5000-block of Upland Drive: Complainant reported a vehicle had driven onto her lawn and caused damage. Witnesses had observed a male driving slowly on the street and striking a rock which damaged the under carriage of his vehicle. A neighbour recorded the license plate. Police attended the male’s residence. He admitted to driving and swerving to avoid a cat on the road. pocket. Police advised that she should not be in possession of both items, even if for her own protection. • March 30, 1:08 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported an angry patient at a medical clinic refusing to leave and demanding the doctor change medical reports. Police attended and were confronted by an irate male. He was calmed down by a police officer and apologized for his behaviour. The male agreed to make arrangements to have his medical file transferred. • April 4, 11:23 p.m., near 45th Avenue and Garry Street: Complainant reported she had been assaulted by a group of teens and had her purse and jacket stolen. K9 attended and police conducted an area canvas, but were unable located a suspect. The female could not provide a detailed description. She was transported to hospital with a minor cut to her head.

Police discovered a female had been picked up from the vehicle location and dropped off at the ferry terminal. She was located and further police investigation found the female had taken the vehicle from the registered owner without consent. She was arrested for a warrant and taken to Surrey cells. • March 30, 1:41 p.m., Highway 17A/Highway 99: Delta police members stopped a driver without taillights on. He displayed symptoms of impairment and provided samples to which he failed. He received a driving prohibition and vehicle was impounded. • March 30, 12:10 p.m., 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: While dealing with police at police headquarters, a female took a hand-held Taser out of her purse and a rock out of her

The Ladner float home community is in shock after the death of one of its residents earlier this week. On Sunday night, 74year-old Everette McGowin jumped into the river in an attempt to save his wife

Linda, who had fallen from the couple’s boat, which was moored to their float home in the 4300-block of River Road West. Linda McGowin was able to hang on and was pulled out of the water by neighbours who heard her calls for help. McGowin, however, was

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking?

Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.

The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.

Search and Rescue stations in Delta and Steveston were also called out. Crews, including coast guard divers, were out until about 2:30 a.m. The search resumed at first light Monday morning. McGowin’s body was discovered near the ferry terminal around 11:30 a.m.

swept down the fast-moving river. A search and rescue effort was launched after neighbours called 911 at about 9:30 p.m. The Canadian Coast Guard was called in around 10 p.m. and sent out a hovercraft. Crews from the Royal Canadian Marine

The new Audéo V devices ensure considerably clearer reproduction of spoken language in company.

New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that is designed to restore speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being

spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. First of three gypsy moth sprayings set to begin Delta Golf Course area to be targeted next week The first aerial spraying treatment period to remove gypsy moths from Surrey and Delta will run from Wednesday, April 15 to Saturday, April 18, weather permitting. Spraying will be by helicopter and start shortly after sunrise (5:20 a.m.) and be completed by 7:30 a.m. each day. Due to the size of treatment area, each treatment is expected to take four days to apply. Three separate sets of treatments are required this spring. As this spring is warmer than normal, and caterpillars are emerging earlier than normal, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural

Resource Operations is aiming to have spraying completed by mid-May. The spray areas, 4,576 hectares around 64th Avenue and 168th Street in Surrey, and 204 hectares in Delta (centered over the Delta Golf Course), will be sprayed with Foray 48B. The spray is safe for use on organic farms. The spray’s active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki (Btk). Btk is naturally present in urban, forest and agricultural soil around the province and does not harm humans, mammals, birds, fish, plants, reptiles, amphibians, bees or other insects. Btk only affects caterpillars

after they have ingested it. The spray equipment is GPS-calibrated and controlled, and is functional only when the helicopters are immediately over the treatment area. Poor weather or wind may cause treatments to be postponed with little advance notice. The province will issue bulletins 24 hours before each treatment and provide up-to-date information at 1866-917-5999 and online at www.gov.bc.ca/gypsymoth. The telephone line will be staffed during business hours and will provide upto-date spray schedules and recorded information 24 hours per day.

Investigators can’t access badly damaged home but fire not considered suspicious BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Due to the extensive damage, investigators have been unable to determine the cause of Monday’s house fire in Ladner. Deputy Delta fire Chief Ken Sim confirmed, however, the blaze is not considered suspicious. Thick black smoke could be seen all over South Delta as firefighters battled the blaze at a home in the 5800-block of 48A Avenue Monday afternoon. The fire broke out just before 2 p.m. Fire Chief Dan Copeland said 20 firefighters responded to the fire, which appears to have started at the back exterior of the home, he said.

Twenty firefighters battled Monday’s house fire in Ladner. Copeland said investigators were not able to enter the home due to structural damage. “It was a stubborn fire,” he said, adding it took firefighters more than an hour to bring it under control. Police had 48A Avenue closed for several hours between 58th and 59th streets as firefighters battled the blaze. Nearby

residents gathered on either side of the blocked off area and at Bell Park to watch. Neighbours said an older couple lived in the home and the woman, who was the only one home at the time of the fire, made it out unharmed. Copeland said the home suffered substantial damage and could be a complete loss.

After 18 years of holding these events, this was “the craziest yet,” said owner Kristine Irving. Women were lined up 15 minutes before the doors opened to get their coveted charity bag. The charity bags were filled with items donated from The Urban Rack suppliers ($300 AG jeans, spring scarves from Inwear and Part Two, and outfits from Sandwich and Dex, to name a few) as well as very generous donations from 25 local businesses. “It gave the evening such a community feel when women opened up their bag and received a gift certificate to a restaurant in Ladner or a massage from one of our local spas or

April 10, 2015 The Delta Optimist A7 Business

Lawlors proud to celebrate quarter-century in Ladner One local business is marking a major milestone this year. The Lawlor family is celebrating 25 years in the jewelry retail business this month. Patrick Lawlor, 83, started in the jewelry business when he was just 14. Daughter Janice LawlorCooper says he started out as a gopher or messenger boy and worked his way up to a traveling salesman, selling jewelry wholesale to stores. Lawlor eventually decided to run his own store and opened Lawlor Jewelry in Ladner. The first location was on Elliott Street and MLA John Savage was on hand to

cut the ribbon for the grand opening. The store would move to 48th Avenue before settling in at Trenant Park Square in 1995, where it stayed for 16 years. Lawlor-Cooper took over the store from her father in 2010, changing the name to Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe and moving it to the current location on Delta Street. Jewelry has certainly become the family business. Lawlor-Cooper’s brother, Gord Lawlor, runs his own store in Stettler, Alberta, also called Lawlor Jewelry, which has been in business for 20 years. “It feels pretty good,” Lawlor-Cooper said of celebrating a quarter-century

in the community. “It’s a bit of a legacy and it’s something my children want to take over and run one day.” Lawlor-Cooper said the store is kicking off a year of celebrations this weekend with a month-long sale and a Pandora gift with purchase. On Saturday, the store will be hosting Murano glass bead making demonstrations. Lawlor-Cooper said they are also planning giveaways throughout the year and are hoping to do something every month to mark the anniversary. “I want an opportunity to thank our customers for being so loyal for so many years,” she said.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Wouldn’t it be nice if it were as easy to get rid of recyclables as it is to dispose of garbage? Next week brings the annual Spring Clean-Up, a time when residents drag all manner of trash to the curb and then watch it magically disappear. Judging from the piles of junk that line each and every street, there’s absolutely no doubt this program is a popular civic initiative. Spring Clean-Up is circled on the calendar in our household as it’s seen as our one chance during the year to get rid of those bulky pieces. Ditch it now or hold your peace for another 12 months. Several items, including a soccer net my son acquired during last year’s Spring Clean-Up, have already been earmarked for disposal next week, but there’s always that tinge of guilt knowing we’re adding to the mountain of garbage that’s taking shape at the edge of Burns Bog. I manage to rationalize with myself that we have to get rid of things in some way, although I openly root for our curbside discards to attract the attention of the pickers that cruise the streets prior to collection day. Knowing it’s going to another home, rather than the landfill, goes a long way to easing the conscience. However, I still have trouble with the notion that we have weekly pick up of garbage, recyclables and garden/green waste, but when it comes to the grand daddy of all collection days, recyclables take a back seat. We’re advised that most items that aren’t accepted during Spring Clean-Up are, in fact, recyclable, but to do so isn’t always easy or convenient. It’s certainly not as simple as dragging said item to the curb. Have you ever tried to recycle a microwave that has a fan (which is somehow very different from a microwave without a fan) or a can of paint that doesn’t have a label? It can be a pain in the backside, to the point where it’s far easier to let it collect dust in the garage than wade through the layers of our regional recycling system. It sure would be nice if these kinds of items could be collected at curbside once a year like we do with our trash, although I realize the logistics of such an undertaking would be problematic. It’s one thing to crush everything in the back of a garbage truck, but it’s quite another to keep tires separate from mattresses and electronics separate from paint. There are undoubtedly many hurdles to clear, but in a world where we’re trying to get greener every day, it seems like an initiative whose time has come.

Beach walk provides reminder how lucky we are to live here MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT Well, that was easy to take! I am generally a snow guy, but the quick transition to spring this year is just fine with me. All the usual signs have been around for a while: the songbirds are back, tulips and daffodils abound, and the smell of first cut lawns is evident everywhere. The most obvious sign of spring for me is the first barefoot beach walk, which happened for me this past Wednesday. I have been walking our dogs for 20 years and have several main routes but me and my trusty companion Luna like Boundary Bay the best. We like to go just south of Centennial Beach down to the border and back, and we go at least five days a week on this route all year long. Through all weather conditions you can imagine, we

enjoy this route immensely. Tide extremes are more evident now as we cruise through the spring equinox towards the summer solstice. On Wednesday there was a fourfoot tide at 2:30 p.m. so our lunchtime walk made for some good tidal pool fun for the pooch and I. This stretch of sandbars looking south toward Point Roberts and the San Juan islands is about as beautiful of a walk you could have anywhere. In the over 5,000 times I have taken this walk, it is never dull. We are unbelievably lucky to live where we do and if you haven’t been out on the sandbars for a while, you need to do yourself some good and get out there. As I walk along, the memories of summer pour in. I am so familiar with this stretch of sand that I know which tidal pools have eelgrass, which are laden with clamshells and I know which interpool tributaries go where. In a few weeks baby Dungeness crabs will appear on the scene and they will use these tributaries as crab super highways transporting them to various feeding areas. Just last week I watched an eagle pull a flounder out of a pool and

land on a rooftop in Point Bob for chow. Last September on a glass calm day we noticed the water was boiling about 10 metres off the last sand bar. Closer inspection revealed thousands of young salmon... I’m guessing fry. There is always something cool to appreciate. A couple of years ago, out in front of Centennial Beach, we encountered a deer on the shoreline. At first thought it was some gigantic dog but Luna picked up a scent and went out for a closer look. The buck was spooked and it ran across the sand all the way to Lilly Point. Luna was in chase for a little bit but the deer was way too fast. I still had to walk to the Point to retrieve my not-so-clever dog. Perhaps my fondest memories of summer walks at the beach were with my young daughter where we would spend hours relaxing in the “Jacuzzi” after a long day of castle building. The Jacuzzi is a convergence tributary where the water would move rapidly at tide change. Crabs and fish would flow through while we were sitting in there all those years ago. It is still there. Check it out.

Democracy is taking a hit

Editor: For a public plebiscite that is supposed to represent the true freedom and justice of our democracy, the current provincial transit vote probably exceeds all of the travails that could happen against a properly functioning democracy. With three-quarterpage ads appealing for a “yes” vote by the Greater Vancouver’s Mayors Council being printed in all local and major newspa-

pers, as well as numerous speeches and ads by other area elites trying to convince the greater public that the defunct transit system is actually a good place to insert more tax money, it leaves nothing but a bad smell to the ordinary citizen that our leaders are trying to pull something over us. If all funds are going to be properly accounted for, then why hasn’t the accountability been forthcoming during the many

years of mismanagement to transit’s card pass system, policing and fare evasion and less publicized failures? And who is paying for all of the “yes” ads? It is the opinion of many reports that it is the taxpayers again who are covering the cost of a promotion against their possible “no” vote. And this is true justice in a democratic system? May our democratic forefathers rest easily in unknowing. Al Warner

Editor: While visiting family in Ladner I developed an urgent need that required a 24-hour stay at Delta Hospital. To say that I was treated with expert and highly professional care would be a serious understatement. I have been a patient in one of Calgary’s “world class” medical facilities so I can say as a well informed

patient that Delta was hands down equal (or better) to it. A simple thanks is hardly adequate for the excellent care by many of Delta’s finest. The efficiency and thoughtfulness of the EMS crew headed by John was remarkable. Quickly following was the cheerful and competent care of nurses. Thank you Cherry, Ras, Kate, Sadia, Mellissa and Ericka. Doctors Curry, Shi,

Yu and McKlaren were professional and kind and easily met every expectation. Not at all unnoticed were the lab and X-ray technicians as well as the transport and cleaning crews. Delta is highly fortunate to have facilities, services and care providers responding to the needs of its citizens. Delta Hospital, you are the best. G. Fowler

Couple grateful for the kindness showed by strangers Editor: I am writing to express appreciation and thanks to the five strangers who came to our assistance on Saturday, April 4. While heading home after walking our dog, my

husband had a “medical moment” that was causing him difficulties maintaining his balance. As I was helping him stay upright, these five thoughtful strangers appeared, almost instantly, cell phones in hand, asking

how they could help us. A special thank you to Brian and Sarah who drove us to our house. We feel so fortunate to be living in such a caring, supportive community. Fran Linton

Keep it simple I am so blessed to have the opportunity, one or two Wednesdays each month, to drive to Burnaby and offer pastoral leadership with the weekly Community Prayer time of L’Arche Greater Vancouver. In that setting I am reminded that the message of the Gospel is such a simple, personal and open invitation to love one another as Jesus loves us. We have just celebrated the Resurrection this past Sunday, that shows us and tells us that the power of God’s love can, and does, overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Our brothers and sisters of the L’arches communities throughout the world show us this same reality every single day, if we open our eyes and

hearts to receive it. I think we often struggle with the reality of this truth because it is so simple. Human beings tend to want to complicate things unnecessarily. We want to quantify and justify the positive advances in our world as brought about by our great wisdom, advanced insight and superior technology. These are good things to be thankful for, but in truth, the power of God’s love shared freely with others is the miracle answer. This is why the recent honouring of Jean Vanier, by granting him the Templeton Award, is such a joyous event. It recognizes that humble, simple love shared consistently through a lifetime can change the world.

exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. An added benefit is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the day. • Exercise with the kids. Working mothers looking to find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly post-meal walks. This is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children. • Have a backup plan on hand. There will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

• Look for gyms with childcare. Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer onsite childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well. • Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of on-site exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk. Finding time to exercise is a common dilemma for working mothers. But there are some creative ways for moms to stay fit without affecting their commitments to work and family.

L

ocal performer Tracy Neff will portray Eliza Doolittle in Royal City Musical Theatre’s production of My Fair Lady. “I think it’s an amazing part to play because it’s really multi-faceted,” says Neff. The musical, which premiered on Broadway in the mid-1950s, is a story about Eliza, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from a professor so she may pass as a lady. The way she speaks informs many other things about her as a person, notes Neff, adding the story deals a lot with the class system. “All said and done, I have to do two totally different dialects,” she says, adding the role is challenging vocally. Another challenge is the fact Neff is juggling quite a few commitments these days. She also teaches at South Delta Secondary and the Delta Community Music School and works with another local performer, Tony Barton, on shows. SDSS is staging a musical two weeks after My Fair Lady closes. This is her first time working with Royal City Musical Theatre. She says the group has a family feeling about it and that the cast is fantastic. My Fair Lady is based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. The musical was a long-running Broadway show and was then made into what has become an iconic film. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1956 and ran for a then-record 2,717 performances before closing in 1962. Royal City Musical Theatre’s production of My Fair Lady is directed by Max Reimer, while musical director James Bryson conducts a live 22-piece orchestra. There will be a preview tonight at 7:30 p.m. while opening night is tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave., New Westminster. The musical runs through April 26. Tickets cost $26 to $47. Contact the box office at masseytheatre.com or call 604-521-5050. For further information visit www.royalcitymusicaltheatre.com. Neff notes her understudy will be performing in the April 22 show.

Concert raises funds for musical boot camp A fundraising concert for the Delta Community Music School’s Thrive City String Boot Camp will be held tomorrow in Ladner. It will feature performances by Infinitus, Stephen Robb (clarinet), Jonathan Der (violin) and a select few of the boot camp students. The boot camp is a 10-day retreat for serious intermediate-advanced violinists, violists and cellists. It’s aimed at helping young and amateur string players from diverse backgrounds develop into technically proficient, creative musicians

who serve their communities and inspire others. It will take place in Mission at Hatzic Lake this summer. In addition to providing scholarships to outreach students, organizers are subsidizing a portion of every student’s tuition to make the camp more affordable. The concert is set for Saturday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Dr. There will also be a silent auction. Admission is by donation (suggested donation is $20).

IT’S

Sidekick auditions

The Sidekick Players Club is auditioning its last production of the season this weekend. Here on the Flight Path, written by Norm Foster and directed for Sidekick by Peg Keenleyside, is an insightful comedy that rips the lid off male-female relationships. For John Cummings, living on the edge of Toronto’s Pearson Airport, the coming and going of jet planes is simply a metaphor for the way life flies by. Cummings is a lonesome, likable man who is strung out by a failed marriage and uncertain of his macho attraction. That his aborted attempts

at romance with a string of comely female neighbours turns out to alter his oh-so masculine perceptions of love, provides the serious undertow in Foster’s comedy. Here on the Flight Path will be performed at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre from June 11 to 27. Auditions will be held at Sidekick’s rehearsal hall in the arts centre on Sunday, April 12 and Monday, April 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. All auditions will be a cold read from the script and on a first come, first served basis. There are no appointments. The cast requires one male (late 40s, 50s) and three females (mid-20s to 50s).

Paint My World on display

South Delta Artists Guild’s latest exhibit runs until April 19 at Gallery 1710 BY

NOREEN M. FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor

Because we are human, we all have more than one world governing our lives. In our outer world, we are physically present and, if fortunate and perhaps wise, can move through birth, youth and middle years into old age with love and friendship to help in the quest we decide upon. And again, because we are human, each of us also has an inner world, wherein our brains work with, and sometimes against, our natural instincts to move us along specific paths of activity suggested perhaps by ambition, curiosity or some form of self-expression. Artists don’t have a singular claim on expressing themselves via the trained use of brush and paint, pen and ink, but visual art commands galleries and

museums, gathers historical recognition going back thousands of years and sometimes draws incredibly high prices for art whose creators died in poverty and despair. Think of Vincent van Gogh. Paint My World is South Delta Artists Guild’s current show at Gallery 1710, running now through April 19, and collectively it presents a variety of work from its members. The paintings of four artists in particular show how each very differently explores visual art to “Paint My World,” and, surprisingly, their individual artistic experience ranges from lifetime to less than a year. Complex, abstract and amazingly detailed, the work of Dennis Walsh demands close attention. This former fisherman began exploring art using marker pens about four years ago. He joined the

guild and has gradually expanded his understanding and capacity for expressing his inner world in finely drafted paintings conveyed through markers, chalk, pen and ink, and watercolour.

Quite opposite in mode, technique and purpose is the work of Jacquie Dunn, who takes the viewer of her free-flowing paintings into the forests and landscapes of Canada’s West Coast,

recently working around the village of Ucluelet, where Emily Carr did some of her early work. Recently retired after 35 years teaching art in Delta schools, she now has time to paint as she wishes. “Art is my lifelong passion,” she says, interpreting and sharing her love of the natural world in oils and acrylics, painted with intensity and speed. Jan Rankin’s paintings have just come on show at Gallery 1710 because she only started painting less than a year ago, after a frustrating “learn to paint” party set her off to explore on her own, buying the most inexpensive basics needed and experimentally splashing on the paint. She joined the guild a few months ago, learned, and now has five paintings in the current show. Striking in design and colour concept, her work presents a vivid

and original interpretation. “I paint from my heart” she says, and it shows. France’s Art Deco movement from about 1920 to 1940 is inspiring the work of Ladner artist Jodie Blaney, whose paintings of the harbours and scenery of Ladner and Steveston have proved popular over several years. Rich colours, somewhat geometric forms and elegant curves show the careful design process of the artist, whose major influences continue to be Lawren Harris and Emily Carr. Paint My World runs through April 19 at Gallery 1710 (1710-56th St., Tsawwassen). The gallery is open Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It follows the recent highly successful six-day TGIF show in which 13 artists of 22 that entered sold 26 paintings at a value of just over $4,000.

Volunteers play integral role for Deltassist Social services agency’s programs rely on members of the community who are willing to donate their time BY

NICOLE SINCLAIR

Optimist contributor

Deltassist depends on volunteers to provide the many programs and services it offers the community. “The amazing thing in Delta is people volunteer for everything, they’re really good about that,” says Barb Murphy, office manager for the non-profit social services agency. Deltassist volunteers help with a variety of needs in the community, everything from grocery shopping for seniors to maintenance and landscaping at the society’s offices. Don Wood volunteers with Deltassist by helping low-income people prepare

their income tax returns so they can qualify for government assistance. He has been volunteering with Deltassist for four years and this year alone he has done more than 250 tax returns. Wood says he volunteers as a way to give back to the community. “It’s a neat thing to do and you meet some really nice people while doing it.” He works with two other volunteers who prepare tax returns at the Ladner office. Wood believes that if you have the skills to be able to help people in any way, you should do whatever you can. Deltassist has been offering a wide range of programs from locations

ery houses, a church, alternate education classes and seniors’ housing. For the seniors’ grocery shopping program, volunteers take orders via phone and pass them to volunteers that head out to the store to collect the items and then deliver them. They understand that what they are doing is really impacting a lot of people, and they thoroughly enjoy what they do. They’ve got lots to add to the programs. They have ideas and suggestions of how things can be done better. They’re just fabulous.”

Efforts made by volunteers produce a ripple effect National Volunteer Week, April 12 to 18, recognizes unsung heroes

A volunteer action is like a stone thrown in a lake: its effect has a direct impact. At the same time, like

ripples, volunteer efforts reach out far and wide to improve communities. Undeniably, volunteers

rock. National Volunteer Week, which takes place April 12 to 18 this year, is a time to

recognize, celebrate and thank Canada’s volunteers. Findings from Volunteer Canada and Investors

National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize, celebrate and thank Canada’s volunteers. Group’s 2013 Volunteer Recognition Study indicate that many volunteers appreciate a genuine thank you. Whether it is with words highlighting the impact of a volunteers’ contribution or a small, personalized token, a custom and sincere thanks makes a difference. To collectively celebrate Canada’s volunteers, this National Volunteer Week, Canadians are urged to recognize volunteers by offering them a token stone. Stones will be available in the National Volunteer Week’s online gift store (http://volunteer.ca/ nvw2015) and will feature an engraved message on one side: Volunteers Rock. Just like no two stones

are identical, every volunteer is unique. This is why one side of the stone is blank for you to write on. A name, an impact word or a short thank you can be added to personally recognize a volunteer. National Volunteer Week began in 1943 to draw attention to the vital contribution women made to the war effort on the homefront. Although the week was largely forgotten after the war ended, it experienced a revival in the late 1960s when organizations stressed the importance of thanking volunteers across Canada. It was reinstated and has since grown to become the largest celebration of civic participation in Canada.

ElderCollege Delta had nearly 300 students register for membership this year. The not-for-profit organization that serves mature students is almost completely run by volunteers. Since it began in 2003, the goal has been to provide a program that is social, stimulating and fun, while supporting life-long learning. Courses offered range from Introduction to iPad to Study of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Two terms are held each year, in spring and winter. The organization has 12 volunteers on its council, around 25 instructors or presenters for each term, and volunteer hosts to support each course. “It’s a completely different experience to teach when people want to be there,” says Guillermo Bustos, who has been a volunteer instructor for seven years. WHEN THEIR SHIP COMES IN ...

For many groups and organizations in our community, the difference between success and failure rests firmly on the dedicated efforts of volunteers. For these organizations, it is like the day their ship comes in when volunteers step forward and make a difference. Westshore Terminals pays tribute to all of those who volunteer in our community . . . take a bow, your kindness and selfless service are showing. Meanwhile, Westshore is working at record pace to bring wealth and prosperity to our community through providing jobs, billions of dollars in export earnings, property taxes paid to our municipality, and through sustained support of a wide variety of worthy local causes. That’s what we do when our ship comes in.

We thank our volunteers for growing with Earthwise!

Volunteer opportunities at Earthwise

Have you ever wondered what is “growing on” down at the Earthwise Garden and Farm in Boundary Bay? Volunteering at Earthwise can be an “earth shaking,” hands-on experience and many volunteers start with the ongoing social drop in days. Weedy Wednesdays and Farm Fridays feature group projects in the one-acre demonstration garden or on the two-acre certified organic farm. Volunteers can get their hands dirty

for an hour or stay all day while learning all about pesticide-free gardening and organic farming. Organizations, community groups and businesses can also get in on the fun with an Earthwise corporate team building day in which employees get out of the office, sow some seeds and pull some weeds in the relaxing natural setting. The experience can be tailored to suit all ages or abilities. Volunteers and groups

can also make important contributions by assisting with event planning, fundraising, educational outreach, building/repair work or the farm store. The Earthwise Volunteer Open House, set for Wednesday, April 15 from 7 to 8 p.m., is a chance to learn about the organization. RSVP your attendance to 604-946-9828 or info@ earthwisesociety.bc.ca. Newcomers have many reasons to volunteer

Many newcomers to Canada are interested in volunteering. In addition to contributing to their new community, they may see it as a way to improve their language skills or gain work experience. Or they may wish to socialize and meet new people. To engage new Canadians, organizations must be welcoming and supportive. They should intentionally reach out to newcomers.

Organizations can grow and become stronger when they apply what they learn about new cultures. At the same time, volunteers gain new skills and experiences. These things can help newcomers settle in to their new environment. And it gives them an opportunity to shape the community in which they live. One in five Canadians is born outside of Canada and immigration now accounts for close to 70 per cent

of our population growth. Each year, approximately 250,000 people come to Canada as refugees and landed immigrants, settling in communities around the country. Immigrants volunteer at a rate of 39 per cent and volunteer an average of 162 hours per year. While this rate is lower than people born in Canada (47 per cent of Canadians over 15 years old), immigrants tend to contribute more hours.

Sun Devils in rebuilding mode

Local Tides

2014 provincial silver medalists don’t have one Grade 12 player on roster BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

The expectation bar has been lowered considerably for one of the top high school girls soccer programs in the province and for a good reason. Having made 13 consecutive trips to the provincial AAA championships and finishing second a year ago, the South Delta Sun Devils are in a full rebuilding mode. “We have lost nine players, including seven starters, and basically have been decimated right through the middle of our line-up. There are certainly some weaknesses now that we didn’t have last year,” said coach Stephen Burns, who has enjoyed a remarkable 19-year run at the helm, working most of that stretch with fellow SDSS teacher Brent Sweeney. “This is the youngest team we have ever had with no Grade 12s.” If losing numerous key players to graduation wasn’t tough enough, the Devils are also without one of their top

scorers from last season who still has two years eligibility. Olivia Sheppard was named to the Whitecaps FC Elite Girls Program in September and the full-time commitment makes it possible to continue high school soccer. Still, opponents would be foolish to look past a program that has established such a winning tradition. “Losing Olivia to residency was definitely another big loss,” continued Burns. “But we do have some young players who can play and there is a lot of speed too. “Our goal right now is to hopefully get into the (Fraser Valley Championships) and anything can happen from there.” The Sun Devils opened their season in the Fraser Valley South League with a 5-1 win over North Delta. Cross-town rival Delta Pacers should also have a competitive team this season. The local schools do battle Monday (3:30 p.m.) at the new Dugald Morrison turf field.

Grade 11 defender Mia Simpson is one of the few familiar faces back with the South Delta Sun Devils senior girls soccer team this season.

Ice Hawks name Flather as new head coach The Delta Ice Hawks have announced Kevin Flather will take over the junior “B” hockey club’s coaching reigns for the 2015-16 season. The Surrey native spent the 2013/14 campaign as general manager and head coach of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Grand Forks Border Bruins where he helped guide the team to its best record in nine seasons. Flather is the owner and operator of Precision Hockey Development which has seen a high percentage of players graduate to junior, university and professional hockey. It is his emphasis and success with player

development that ultimately led to his hiring. As a player, Flather enjoyed a nine-year career that began in 2003-04 in Grand Forks, before moving onto the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He eventually went on to play for four pro teams — Knoxville Icebears (Southern Professional Hockey League), Leipzig Icefighters (Germany Oberliga), Dayton Gems (International Hockey League) and Liege Bulldogs (Belgian Hockey League). He also made two stops at the collegiate level with the Nipissing Lakers (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and Concordia University (Alberta Colleges Athletic

Conference). Flather’s first task is overseeing the Ice Hawks’ upcoming Prospects Showcase that will begin the process to fill a number of vacancies on the roster. The Ice Hawks are coming off a 22-20-2 regular season and an opening round playoff sweep by eventual Pacific Junior Hockey League champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack. Registration is now open for the Ice Hawks Prospects Showcase. The camp runs from May 5-8 at the Richmond Ice Centre. Players can register for the showcase at www.deltaicehawks.com

South Delta contingent help Midget Ravens win B.C. title A strong South Delta contingent helped the Richmond Ravens Midget AA girls hockey team conclude a dominant season in style.

Leigh Bourque, Natalie Lester and Meagan Wilson were three of five players from South Delta who helped the Richmond Ravens capture B.C. Hockey’s provincial midget championship last month. They were joined by Alex Cafik-Irwin and Shannon Wilson.

The Ravens rolled to five straight victories to be crowned B.C. Hockey’s Midget Female provincial champions. They completed the run with a 3-0 win over the North Island Impact in the gold medal game, avenging a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat a year earlier. It was Richmond’s third B.C. title in four years. The Ravens also produced victories over Cranbrook (3-0), Terrace (3-1), Penticton (5-1) and Williams Lake (1-0). In total, the girls compiled a 50-3-3-2 record, winning the Pacific Coast league championship, as well as their own Pacific Classic Tournament and the Sask Tel Female Challenge in Regina. The Ravens roster featured local players Megan Wilson, Shannon Wilson, Natalie Lester, Leigh Bourque and Alex CafikIrwin. All five are eligible to return next season. Lester set-up Yvonne Mikulcik’s second goal of the game in the gold medal tilt. The team loses just four players to graduation and over half the roster was new to the Midget age level. Four players had previously never played rep hockey before. The team has been coached for the past eight seasons by AJ Sander who has been involved in minor hockey for 33 years. He coached his 1,500 game at the tournament in Saskatchewan. “The girls played hard and worked hard all year,” said Sander. “They were eager to learn with all the players improving their individual play and really learning how to play together as a team. They really stuck together and played for each other.”

The Lax4Life cancer fundraiser event returns to the Ladner Leisure Centre on Saturday after a one year haitus. The 12-hour lacrosse game has raised nearly $40,000 since its inception.

LLC welcomes back lacrosse with DLA’s Lax4Life fundraiser Delta Lacrosse officially returns to the Ladner Leisure Centre Saturday with its annual Lax4Life fundraiser. The event was postponed last season when the association was forced to leave its official home while it underwent repairs and renovation work. The marathon 12hour game (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) will feature players of all ages and levels with all funds raised going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Since its inception four years ago, Lax4Life has generated close to $40,000. Organizers are aiming for another $20,000. They will have additional help, with

plenty of new faces, thanks to the recent merger with the North Delta Minor Lacrosse Association — unifying the sport in the municipality. Delta Lacrosse is excited to have the Vancouver Stealth onboard as one of the Lax4Life’s official sponsors. The National Lacrosse League club’s official mascot “Bomber” will be in attendance from 1-3 p.m. The organization invites the community to drop by Saturday, make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society and catch some great lacrosse action.

Schuss productive in debut games with Stealth

A productive debut for Logan Schuss still wasn’t enough for the Vancouver Stealth to slow down the Edmonton Rush on the weekend in National Lacrosse League action. The Ladner native, who was traded to Vancouver last week, managed 11 points over two games but the first place Rush

produced a pair of victories — winning 1514 overtime in Edmonton Friday and 17-10 one night later in Langley. Vancouver (4-9) is still hanging on to the third and final playoff spot in the West Division, one-half game up on the Calgary Roughnecks with five games to play in the regular season.

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Perfect! - Peter Woeste I was originally considering an older, more experienced realtor when planning to list a condo for sale. However, I liked the team concept of the Fraser Elliott Group and thought they had a comprehensive online and print marketing approach. It turned out to be a very good decision! After listing the condo with photos, it sold in under a week! The photos were professionally done and included 3-D virtual tours in addition to still photos. I received a weekly marketing update and the Fraser Elliott team was in constant contact by e-mail, text and phone. Initially, I was concerned that a condo would not receive the same coverage as a higher-priced property. However, I?m happy to report that this wasn?t the case.
