Delta has a new police chief. Mayor Lois Jackson announced this week that after an intensive search, Neil Dubord has been selected. He replaces Jim Cessford, who retired earlier this
year after 20 years at the helm of the department. “We looked for a chief who is a strong leader with a proven track record in policing, a critical thinker and more importantly a person who believes in community policing and our ‘no call too small’ mandate,” said Jackson,

Delta police this week issued a public advisory about a high-risk sex offender moving to the area. James Conway has been convicted three times for sexual offences involving children. He has been released from custody and is moving to Delta. Department spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow said police couldn’t say
specifically where in Delta Conway is relocating for several reasons, including privacy concerns. The 40-year-old is described as Caucasian with brown hair and blue eyes. He is 6’4” and weighs 275 pounds. According to police, he prefers to use public transit as his method of transportation. Conway has a criminal history that includes sexual interference of a person under 16, sexual assault,

Anyone who sees Conway violating his conditions is asked to call 911.

Roger Emsley, executive director of Against Port Expansion, addresses the crowd at last Saturday’s Peep-In. Held at Roberts Bank, the second annual event highlighted the plight of migrating sandpipers and the impact port expansion has on their populations.
It’s actually not a good news budget. That was the assessment of trustee Val Windsor Tuesday as she and fellow Delta school board members voted in favour of next year’s operating budget. A $2 million deficit will
be balanced with the help of additional revenues, extra government funding as well as carrying some debt forward. Unlike the past several years, none of the actual cuts planned are to directly impact the classroom or programs. Several trustees noted that while it might seem
like a less painful budget than past years, difficult choices had to be made by previous boards to get to where they are now. Windsor said since she was first elected in 2011 she has taken part in $10 million worth of cuts and not all of them can be attributed to lower enrollment.
“I know previous boards before I was elected made some heart-wrenching decisions. We closed a school, then we cut down on the bussing and a lot of hard decisions had to have been made in order to kind of protect the classroom from what’s going on. “I’m voting to support this budget, somewhat

reluctantly. I hope that the government will realize that our students are our future,” she added. Saying it’s still not good news having to lose $2 million from the budget, board chair Laura Dixon said the province, unfortunately, views education as a cost rather than an investment in the future.

Mayor’s salary rises to $117,841; councillors to get $50,117 annually BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Delta’s civic politicians have voted to give themselves a raise — the second one in two years. Delta council voted in favour Monday of a staff report that recommends Mayor Lois Jackson’s annual salary increase to $117,841 from $113,832 and council salaries rise from $48,734 to $50,117. “Everybody hates deal-
ing with this,” Jackson said before the vote. “I hate dealing with this.” For years Delta has calculated council salaries based on a comparison with four Metro Vancouver municipalities with similar populations: Coquitlam, Richmond, Township of Langley and District of North Vancouver. The salaries of Delta’s mayor and councillors are set at the average of those four municipalities.
Last year, council voted in favour of an almost three per cent increase for the mayor and just over two per cent for councillors. Before that, council’s last pay raise was in 2012. Jackson argued that Delta employs a smaller council that covers a large and complex community. She said Delta is geographically one of the largest, has three distinct communities, 61 kilometres of dikes, the port and two large industrial
areas. “We have a very, very complex community.” Civic politicians also directed staff to look at the methodology used to calculate remuneration for the mayor, council and senior staff and report back prior to any future increases.

ties, including the school district, Metro Vancouver, TransLink, B.C. Assessment and the Municipal Finance Authority, which make up about 40 per cent of the total property taxes. Delta’s increase is in line with the average among other Metro Vancouver municipalities, with Richmond coming in with the lowest at 1.89 per cent and Surrey on the other end at 3.9 per cent. Tax bills are due July 1.

The average Delta home will see an increase of about $60 on this year’s property tax bill. Civic politicians this week gave conditional approval to a 2.99 per cent increase — .49 per cent to maintain government services and 2.5 per cent for capital infrastructure, including the new fire hall and training centre at
Boundary Bay Airport. In a report to Delta council, finance director Karl Preuss said the increase means an extra $60 in taxes for the average residential property assessed at $570,000. Coupled with the $22 increase to the flat utility rate, homeowners are looking at an average increase of $82 this year. The annual property tax bill also includes levies from other authori-

f the Tsawwassen ferry terminal were an orchestra, the control tower would be the conductor’s area. Staff members operating the tower are known as tower controllers. They liaise with ticket agents, all of the incoming and outgoing vessels, ramp operators and the loaders, explains terminal manager Esther Rossiter. “They’re conducting everything,” she says. Tower controller Brad Page says the position includes a vast array of duties. Besides telling incoming ships where to go and advising ticket BY DAVE agents as to where the traffic should head, they’re in direct communication with the manager and provide notification of any abnormalities or problems. They also deal with dangerous cargo, at which point a number of people need to be involved, he says, adding the cargo
needs to be approved prior to being boarded. There are four 46-inch TVs in the control tower that show everything from the foot passenger departure area, to the ramps, to the holding areas. “(They basically give) a visual on everything that goes on here that we’re required to deal with,” Page says. Tower controllers also make announcements over the public address system. There are four tower controllers throughout the workday, Rossiter notes. The day begins at 4:30 a.m. and WILLIS finishes at 11 p.m. “There’s always two at the busiest times,” she adds. The tower is located basically in the middle of the terminal. “We have the luxury of being able to see all the way down the causeway. If we have to call emergency vehicles, we can
already see them five minutes away,” says Rossiter. “It’s a large terminal but it’s nicely spread out so we can see everything and the tower can see.” Rossiter says an observation deck on the tower used to be open to the public but that’s no longer the case.
" The control tower is strategically located in the middle of the terminal.
" Tower controllers keep tabs on all aspects of the terminal from their perch. Do you know a place that reporter Dave Willis should visit? Let him know at dwillis@delta-optimist.com.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW When asking nice doesn’t work, being put on the spot seems like a logical next step. Back on Valentine’s Day, the Friends of Delta Hospital held its first town hall forum, a standing room-only gathering in Ladner that highlighted the need for increased funding to improve health care services in this area. At that forum, Delta North Liberal MLA Scott Hamilton said he would attempt to arrange a meeting with Health Minister Terry Lake so local stakeholders could share concerns as well as their plans to address them. It’s been two-and-a-half months since that town hall and a date still hasn’t been set to meet with the minister, which prompted Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington to put Lake on the spot in the legislature last week. She asked him to commit to a meeting, which he said he would, although a date remains elusive. There’s no doubt the health minister has a lot on his plate, particularly when the legislature is in session, but it’s hard to buy the he’s-too-busy argument given he had time to visit in mid-March for the announcement that the Toigo family had donated a record $2.5 million toward a new lab and diagnostic imaging wing. Lake wasn’t too busy to take part in a good news announcement with regards to Delta Hospital, but somehow he couldn’t find an extra half-hour on that visit, or at any other time over the last couple of months, to meet with doctors and other stakeholders. That suggests he can find time in his busy schedule if it’s important enough to him. Well, this is important to us. That’s why both MLAs have asked him to meet. So have the mayor and Friends of Delta Hospital. The Tsawwassen First Nation is also on board. This is a concerted effort by the community to address inequities in Fraser Health funding and that’s why 8,000 signatures have been collected on a petition. Given the repeated requests I suspect Lake will have no choice but to eventually find time for a meeting, although how much good it does is another matter entirely. He’s already stated it’s not his role to direct Fraser Health on decisions regarding surgical services, so as much as a meeting with the minister is desired, it might by more formality than fruitful. Having said that, he is the head honcho when it comes to health issues in the province so if anyone has the ability to address the concerns that have been raised by doctors at Delta Hospital, he would be the guy. We’ve just got to meet with him first.
Society needs to do more to connect kids with their food MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT If you have driven along the highways or local roads in Delta of late, you will have noticed it is time to get some food in the ground. Local farmers are busy plowing and seeding, and you can start to see varied hues of green in some fields, indicators of the bounty to come later in the year. Spring is a magical time and we are lucky here in Delta to witness the cycle of food and food production. I think everyone knows by now that the average age of farmers is increasing and I have written about this extensively over the years. The worldwide economy of food is massive and it is important that governments, agencies and educators do their best to engage youth so they are made aware of opportunities to become involved. In a recent report from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFFAD), it is noted
that youth in rural areas around the world are discouraged from entering into activities associated with food and food production. Barriers to entry are steep and there is little in the way of incentive to motivate entry into farming specifically. The first sentence in the report states, “Rural youth are the future of food security. Yet around the world, few young people see a future for themselves in agriculture or rural areas.” The Jamie Oliver Foundation’s Food Revolution Day is coming up on May 15 and the primary goal this year is to promote and embrace education as the primary tool to engage youth and encourage them to understand the importance of nutrition and locally grown food. This year’s Food Rev campaign highlights some alarming statistics. There are 42 million children around the world under the age of five that are overweight or obese. Children today are the first generation predicted to live shorter lives than their parents, and diet-related illnesses such as type two diabetes are the world’s biggest killers. Kids in Delta will again be actively involved in Food Revolution Day. Mentors and students will seed 1,200 pickling cucumber plants that will sit in a greenhouse before being planted

on their school farms as seedlings in June. Nutritional health, food education and food sovereignty are issues that simply cannot be ignored. Luckily, children have open minds and if given the opportunity to dive in to something, they will. Most of us know that if kids plant it, they will eat it. This has been very evident of late as I have been seeding with young farmers in our school district. The past few weeks the kids have been chowing on collard greens, spinach and cabbage right off the plant while we are in outside sessions. As we can all appreciate, a nice way to engage kids is to talk about money. On Tuesday we harvested some sage from English Bluff Elementary. All 18 Grade 3 kids took some home. At your local supermarket a clamshell of this herb sells for around $3. It took a while, but the kids figured out that they had $54 worth of product. Light bulbs! When we went back to the plant to take a look at what the potential was for the rest of the harvest, the number was $400. Definitely food for young thought! Province is assessing marine spill preparedness: minister
Editor: Re: MLA says Victoria must protect Roberts Bank from oil spill risk, April 22 The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project is currently undergoing an environmental assessment by an independent federal review panel. I am confident the federal panel will complete a robust and effective environmental assessment with significant opportunities for public participation. In fact, B.C. will participate in the federal review to ensure provincial interests are considered. Any calls for the provincial government to
veto this proposal are premature at best. Following the completion of the federal review, B.C. still retains the ability to conduct an additional assessment. We may also add conditions to any provincial approvals, if required. B.C. continues to push the federal government to take action to protect our coast. The recent spill in English Bay underscores why we are demanding a world-leading marine spill preparedness and response system. With projects like Roberts Bank Terminal 2, it
is no secret there will continue to be increased shipping activity in the area. This is why our government commissioned Nuka Research to assess current marine spill preparedness and response capabilities for B.C.’s coastline. This comprehensive study lays the foundation for building an entire system to respond to marine spills and we are using it in our discussions with the federal government on next steps as we work together going forward. Mary Polak Minister of Environment
Don’t force the public to check off box Editor: Here we go again with another messed up program from incompetent government officials. It’s rather common knowledge that the current organ donor situation needs fixing and right now. How come organ donations in Canada are dismally low while in countries like Spain and Austria, for
example, the participation rate exceeds 80 per cent? In those countries, drivers, when renewing their licenses, check off a box if they wish not to donate their organs upon death. Pretty easy and it works. Human beings are wired not to fill in forms and check off boxes; it’s a hassle. In Canada, the current
program is designed to fail as it does not address common human behaviour. It’s time to scrap the online registration program and reintroduce the driver’s licence organ program. It will work, however with the incompetent officials currently in power, don’t hold your breath. Barrie McDonald
Not buying fed budget numbers
Editor: I am wondering if MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay can explain to me how taking over $1 billion from the contingency fund somehow adds up to a budget surplus? Presumably if you are taking money from the contingency fund that means you are actually adding to the deficit. And why would you take money from the EI fund in a time of rising joblessness (all those oil sands workers are getting laid off)? Your budgetary jiggery pokery doesn’t wash with me. Jane McCall

Will River Rd. exit be in final plans?
Editor: Re: MLA quashes rumour; exit to remain with new bridge, letter to the editor, April 22 Further to the letter where MLA Vicki Huntington spoke to the transportation minister regarding the River Road West exit on the new bridge, where he reassured her the exit was still in the plans. The use of the word “still” makes me nervous, and makes me wonder if that exit will “still” be in the final plans. John Ketteringham

A10 The Delta Optimist May 1, 2015 Opinion
Mayors’ plan is the best choice for Delta Former three-term mayor Beth Johnson says when you add buses to the streets, it actually reduces traffic BY
BETH JOHNSON
Optimist contributor
When you build it, they really do come. When you test the old “if you build it ...” theory on highway infrastructure, the people of Delta know it how it turns out. Every time we build a new road, widen a bridge or add an interchange — all in the worthy effort to manage congestion — a bunch of new cars and trucks turn up to fill the space. So, these investments come as a mixed blessing: they help, sometimes a lot and for quite a while; but they also alienate land, and they draw an increasing flow of traffic into our streets and neighbourhoods. The exception, when it comes to transportation, is public transit. When you add buses to the streets, they actually reduce traffic. They give people an option — and every person who chooses a bus over their car frees up room for everyone else. We all get more space
on the road without carving any deeper into Delta’s farms or Burns Bog. That’s principally what’s on offer with the Mayors Plan for Transportation and Transit. There is certainly money for roads: the plan provides an additional $36 million a year for maintenance and improvements on major roads, including 56th Street in South Delta, River Road in Tilbury and Nordel Way, 72nd Avenue, 64th Avenue and Scott Road in North Delta. But most of the investments will extend and improve service on buses — and on the services to which those buses connect. For example, rush hour bus service from South Delta and Ladner to the Canada Line would increase to every eight minutes — and Canada Line capacity will increase 33 per cent. The plan also includes: • More buses to the B.C. Ferries terminal in Tsawwassen; • 80 per cent more NightBus service and
and double the number within walking distance of service arriving at least every 15 minutes (during peak). It would put 49 per cent of Delta jobs within walking distance of PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE Former mayor Beth Johnson was involved in the frequent, allday transit formation of TransLink in the late 1990s. (11 per cent extended hours on many today) and other routes; 80 per cent within walking • 35 per cent more distance of transit service HandyDART service; and arriving at least every 15 • An upgrade and expanminutes during peak hours sion on the South Delta (61 per cent today). Exchange/Park & Ride. That’s what the plan There’s also $22 million does for Delta alone. But a year for municipalities to few people stay in Delta use building walking and all the time; 80 per cent of cycling projects. us regularly commute to In total, the plan would another municipality for increase the number of work or school. So we have Delta residents within walk- a chance to make affordable ing distance of frequent, all- and strategic changes that day transit by 300 per cent will increase choice and
relieve congestion everywhere we go. That’s if we vote yes. If the plebiscite fails, it’s back to the drawing board. It’s not as though nothing will happen. Lots will happen. The province has indicated its determination to keep spending on certain major highway projects, like the bridge replacing the George Massey Tunnel. And, in the next 25 years, another million people will move to the region and, lacking choice, they’ll all buy cars and join the queue. In the plebiscite conversation so far, there has been a fair amount of anger and frustration. Many people now say they want to send a message. But people should think about how that message might be received. The provincial government, which ordered this vote, could only assume that people didn’t like the Mayors’ Plan: after all, that’s what we’re voting on. It might conclude we don’t care about transit. Worse, it might assume we just don’t
want to be involved — and in the future, it will just build bridges and highways without asking our mayors or us. So, on your way home on the next busy day, think about how much better your commute might be if you (or the person in front of you) was tucked away on a nice warm bus, clearing the road for goods movement — and maybe for you. Then hunt down your ballot, fill it out and mail it by May 29. We know they’re coming. Doesn’t it make sense to build what we want — and need? Beth Johnson was mayor of Delta from 1990 to 1999. As vice chair of Metro Vancouver and chair of Metro’s transportation and strategic planning committee in the late 1990s, she was intimately involved in the planning and negotiations with the provincial government to form TransLink. Johnson now uses public transit for most of her visits to Vancouver.

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay announces federal funding at the Boys and Girls Club.
Findlay applauds Skills Link grads BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay was at the Boys and Girls Club of South Coast B.C. office in Ladner last Thursday to congratulate young graduates of the Skills Link program, which benefited from a $367,000 grant from the federal government. The funding went toward a project that helped 36 youth in Delta gain the skills and experience they need to find jobs. The participants benefited from group workshops to learn or improve useful jobs skills such as problem solving and teamwork. They gained work experience with local employers
in areas such as childcare, landscaping and marketing. Some participants also obtained specialized training such as health and safety certification. Speaking on behalf of Pierre Poilievre, minister of employment and social development, Findlay said it’s part of the federal government’s strategy to equip all Canadians with the skills and training they need to connect with available jobs. She told several of the Skills Link program graduates in attendance their options are limitless if they invest in themselves. Since 2006, the Youth Employment Strategy, which includes the Skills Link program, has helped over 611,000 youth.

Paul Woehrle
Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Soul rest I regularly recite the “Comfortable Words” of Jesus, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) Sometimes the burdens we bear are too much for us. Jesus invites us to come to him and in so doing, find rest. Those who do also find there are some burdens we cannot carry and there are some burdens we should not carry. In exchange for our burdens, Jesus offers us his burden of love for all of Creation. And Jesus’ burden is light. He is yoked for works of love, but
his yoke is easy. I think it is an offer that all should consider. In my opinion, it is a great deal! The same principle needs to be at work in the church and community as well. Paul’s letter to the Galatians (6:2 and 5) exhorts to “carry each other’s burdens” when there is just too much weight or trouble for one who is close to us. And to ensure that others are not loading us up with things that they need to be dealing with themselves, the exhortation comes, “each one should carry their own load.” I understand there are some things that we just need to get on with, even if difficult. Whatever your situation, you will find soul rest in the gentle and humble one, Jesus.

Rabbit Mix Breed, Grey, Neutered Male Bunny, (Approximately 6 months old)
Earl Grey was brought in to the shelter through the Travelling Tails program, with his sibling Chair Latte. Earl Grey is a very sweet bunny who is quick to say “hello,” especially if you have a treat! He loves to be pet by the ears and on his back but doesn’t sit still very long to enjoy some cuddles. Earl Grey is a very active rabbit who will require space to roam around and explore his environment. Earl Grey should not be homed with another rabbit as he acts aggressively towards them. At the shelter he hasn’t taken to a liking to the dry pellet food, so he is getting fresh veggies twice a day and his favorite is spinach.

SDSS grad Jacob Wolstencroft brings Marry Me A Little to Tsawwassen BY

A Vancouver theatre company headed by a South Delta Secondary grad has partnered with the Tsawwassen Arts Centre to bring a rarely staged production to South Delta. Jacob Wolstencroft, creative director and founder of Square One Entertainment, grew up in Tsawwassen and is returning to his hometown this month with his production of Marry Me A Little. Described as an intimate musical featuring just two actors, Marry Me A Little is the story of two single strangers — Julia Ullrich as Her and Jacob Woike as Him — who are left alone in their empty studio apartments on a Saturday night in Brooklyn, New York. They share a night of sweet fantasies and deep yearning, while never knowing they’re just a floor away from each other. Charming and bittersweet, Marry Me A Little, which features songs by Stephen Sondheim, imagines a world where romance triumphs over loneliness and heartache. The theatre bug bit Wolstencroft early in life. He made his community theatre debut at 11 as the Tin Man in Sidekick Players Club’s production of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. He was actively involved with the drama department at South Delta Secondary where he performed in many shows, including Our Town, Annie, Charlie Brown and Peter Pan. Wolstencroft, who graduated from SDSS in 2011, also directed a variety of plays locally and helped run Knockout Theatre, a Tsawwassen-based youth theatre company. After graduating from SDSS, Wolstencroft attended Capilano University’s

musical theatre program and founded Square One Entertainment last October with the goal of finding new ways of financing theatre in Vancouver. He approached Jacqueline Hamlin, venue manager at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, about the potential of bringing a musical to its stage and a partnership was born. For Hamlin, the partnership provided an opportunity to bring another avenue of theatre to Tsawwassen.
“It is inspiring to be presenting a musical produced by talented and ambitious young adults with the goal of inviting youth and young adults into the theatre world. This experience is also a great opportunity to build on the theatre culture we have in Tsawwassen and it is important for the continued growth of our venue,” she said. As part of the production, Wolstencroft has also partnered with the Corporation of Delta to offer a one-day theatre workshop
for youth May 15. Led by Wolstencroft, the workshop will see participants create a mini-musical that will be presented that same evening, just prior to the scheduled performance of Marry Me A Little. Marry Me A Little runs May 7 to 9 and May 15 at 7:30 p.m. with matinee performances on May 9 and 16 at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased online at www.deltareg.ca or by calling 604-943-9437.

Walk With Your Doc returns to South Delta next weekend.
The third edition of the local Walk With Your Doc is set for next Saturday. It’s billed as a short, fun, community walk around Boundary Bay Regional Park. Even though last year’s walk had rainy and windy conditions, the event was still a lot of fun, said Dr. Martin Ray, who will be taking part in the upcoming walk as well. “Whatever the weather, we’re ready to go,” he said. Ray said about 60 people took part last year and he hopes that number will double this time around.
“Each year, during the week of May 10, the World Health Organization’s international Move for Health Day, doctors across B.C. host walking events for their patients and often for their community too,” the Walk With Your Doc website notes. The local walk is sponsored by the Delta Division of Family Practice, Ray noted. The group has an initiative, GP for Me, with the goal of providing high quality primary care for Delta residents, he said. Walk With Your Doc takes place Saturday, May 9 with check-in scheduled for 10:45 a.m. at the Centennial Beach Café. The event is pet-friendly. Register at walkwithyourdoc.ca.

Exploring Ontario’s heartland BY
JAMIE ROSS
Optimist contributor
I remember as a young boy when my father, during the weeks leading up to one particular Christmas, had ensconced himself in our basement for hours on end. I was warned the depths of our home were temporarily out-ofbounds, so I sat upstairs and listened to the strange sounds from below with an overpowering sense of curiosity and wonder. On Christmas morning I was invited down. He had built a wonderful model railway that would eventually take up the majority of my bedroom. I suppose that’s why I was so excited to visit the St. Jacobs & Aberfoyle Model Railway, a delightful museum that recreates the great rail era. I entered with a sense of anticipation similar to that December morning long ago — but nothing could have prepared me for this magnificent display. Here, in an elaborate layout that covers 279 square metres, stood an overwhelming scene of amazing detail, replicating Southern Ontario in the late 1950s. Both of Canada’s major rail-

ways, the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific, are here. Models of late steam locomotives and first-generation diesels, authentically detailed for specific prototypes, provide the power. There are more than 250 freight
cars and it takes six operators in a control tower above the viewing floor to run everything. The trains travel through scenic countryside, passing over bridges and through tunnels, fields, towns and the Niagara Escarpment.
As the model railway invokes a hint of nostalgia, so does a visit to the charming village of St. Jacobs, 15 kilometres north of Waterloo. It is like stepping back in time, seeming as though nothing much has changed since
the town’s Old Order Mennonite settlers arrived here in the early 1800s in Connestoga wagons from Pennsylvania. The jingle of horse tack and the clip-clop of hooves on pavement can still be heard. The Mennonite farmers pride themselves in maintaining their traditions and culture. While most visitors are drawn to St. Jacobs for its famous market, antiques, quilts and furniture shops, many are also intrigued by its history as it’s one of the original Mennonite settlements in Ontario. The “Mennonite Story” at the visitor centre provides fascinating insights into the history, beliefs and lifestyles of the Mennonite people. A short drive south of the village brings you to Canada’s largest year-round farmers’ market, a festival of sights, sounds and tastes. Local Mennonite and Amish farmers sell their wares: fruit, vegetables, fresh baked bread, cookies, homemade jams, cheeses, meats, clothing and even livestock. At its peak in the summer, the market has over 600 vendors. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate.

Public Notice
Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Availability of Additional Participant Funding OTTAWA, April 27, 2015 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) is making additional funding available through its Participant Funding Program to assist the participation of the public and Aboriginal groups in the subsequent phases of the environmental assessment of the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project in British Columbia. The Agency recently announced the inclusion of marine shipping that is associated with the project in the environmental assessment. As a result, additional funding is being made available for eligible individuals and groups to assist them in reviewing and commenting on the additional information on the potential environmental effects of marine shipping. The funding will also assist with participating in the public hearing. The Agency also invites the public and Aboriginal groups to apply for funding for the last phase of the environmental assessment. Following the submission of the panel report, and prior to the Minister’s decision on the project, the Agency will hold a public consultation on the potential conditions related to the project. Should the project be approved to proceed, these conditions would ultimately become legally binding on the proponent. Applications received by May 27, 2015 will be considered. Recipients and the amount of funding allocated will be announced at a later date. To apply for funding, email the Participant Funding Program at PFP.PAFP@ceaa-acee.gc.ca or contact the staff of the program at 1-866-582-1884.

He also recommends (I am happy to report) for people to stop the chronic cardio when exercising. Spending hours on a treadmill, or on an elliptical trainer, only increases our stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol, in turn, negatively affects our youth hormones (DHEA, testosterone, human growth hormone, etc.). Instead, opt for short bursts of high-intensity exercise. You should also add strength training to your weekly workouts. Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass, is another sign of age and disease and to combat this you have to lift heavy things, and lift them on a regular basis. And, finally, add melatonin to your diet. Melatonin is a hormone our body produces that helps control our sleep and wake cycles. Unfortunately, as we age, our production of it decreases. SFU grad giving back to the game Ladner’s Amanda Renkema started coaching just weeks after playing her final university game BY
MARK BOOTH
Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
Amanda Renkema wasted little time giving back to a sport that gave so much to her. Just three weeks after winding down her collegiate volleyball career at Simon Fraser University, the Ladner native was overseeing tryouts for the Air Attack’s U15 Black team. It happened to be the very same club that opened the door for her opportunity years earlier when longtime Air Attack technical director Adrian Goodmurphy saw an unpolished “tall and athletic player with a good attitude.” “I’ve worked with a lot of Volleyball B.C. programs but coaching a team is a different road,” said Renkema. “There’s a lot of game strategy and who works well with each other as opposed to just working on skill base. It’s definitely a different aspect of coaching and I have been learning on the go.” It was Goodmurphy that convinced Renkema to come back to her former club as a volunteer mentor. Having an established university player in her early 20s working with 14-and-15-year-olds couldn’t be a more ideal situation. She is a coach and a role model. “I think the girls can definitely relate to me and (cocoach) Sarah (Hockley),” she said. “We are not their parents’ age and they feel comfortable to ask us questions. The girls are still at their development stage as players. It’s when they hit 16 and beyond where the focus really shifts to competition. “There were volunteer and guest coaches who did this for me for three years.

After an impressive career at Simon Fraser University where she served three years as co-captain, Amanda Renkema is coaching with the Air Attack volleyball club that helped her become an elite player. There is appreciation for what they did and it’s good to be giving back.” Renkema’s road to becoming an elite player got off to a rocky start when she was cut from the Delta Christian school team in Grade 6. She made it the following a year and then headed to Richmond Christian where she began to realize her potential as a dominant middle blocker. “When I went to the Grade 8 tryouts I didn’t even know what a position was. I was the tallest kid on the team by far and they put me in the middle and that was my destiny,” smiled Renkema, who now stands at 6-foot-1. She attended Air Attack tryouts two years later and made the “A” team. She flourished in the club environment and was selected
for the U16 Baden Cup where she earned a spot on the provincial team. With the encouragement of an older brother and attending a smaller private school, Renkema was always keen to participate in many sports as possible. However, her now flourishing volleyball career had put her at a crossroad. “My Grade 10 year was so busy because I was playing South Delta Invaders (fastpitch) as well,” she recalled. “I realized I had to make a choice and go with (only) volleyball.” It was during tryouts for the provincial U18 team when Renkema caught the eye of then SFU head coach Lisa Sulatycki. The Clan were converting from a CIS to a NCAA program and the chance to play exclusively American schools and travel
south was alluring. Renkema would be part of SFU’s inaugural NCAA recruiting class in 2010. After a redshirt freshman season, she earned a spot in the starting line-up and would go on to appear in 110 matches over the next four years. Three of those seasons she served as cocaptain. Wins were tough to come by for the Clan during Renkema’s first two seasons on the court. It eventually led to Sulatycki’s departure and the arrival of University of Montana assistant Gina Schmidt who starred at Oregon State University as a player. The program turned the corner under Schmidt, leading to SFU’s first winning season in Renekma’s senior year. “It was just a change of
culture,” said Renkema. “Lisa was a great coach but the program just needed a new path and a new culture. We had a lot of talented recruits but just didn’t have the results.” The end of Renkema’s university career coincided with her graduating with a degree in Communications and Media Studies. She is putting it to use at the Port Moody-based Selects Performance and also works part-time at the Richmond Olympic Oval. It has meant a hectic schedule at times, with her coaching duties too, but Renkema makes it work. “As a player, you know what does and doesn’t work for them,” she added. “It’s a good group of girls to coach and they are at the age where you still can mould them.”

U17 Blues secure another trip to provincial tourney BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
Tsawwassen ’98 Blues are heading back to the Provincial “B” Cup Championships for the fourth consecutive year and this time they are going through the front door. The U17 girls rep soccer team secured their trip to Penticton in early July with a 1-0 win over Vancouver Fury last Sunday in Coastal Cup semi-final action. The victory was somewhat of a breakthrough for the Blues who had yet to get past the final four stage in previous years but still managed to earn a provincial berth each time by winning a backdoor playoff game. Now, they have the opportunity to capture a pair of cups, starting with Saturday’s Coastal championship against the Langley FC Wolves at Aldergrove Athletic Park. Tsawwassen produced three consecutive wins in the single game elimination cup
playdowns — including back-to-back 1-0 victories in Vancouver over the Fusion and Fury. The only goal surrendered so far was in a 2-1 opening round triumph over the Surrey FC Rangers “The girls always come to play with a lot of heart and give 110 percent effort. They have had to deal with some tough opponents and some injuries too,” said coach Lisa Bremner. “Our defensive play and goalkeeping have been very good.” Bremner wasn’t pleased with her girls’ first half performance in the semi-final and challenged them to be better in the final 45 minutes. They answered the call and produced the game’s only goal off the foot of Lauren Joyce. The Blues began their Provincial Cup run in Kelowna four years ago before the championships shifted to North Vancouver and Chilliwack. They split a pair of bronze medal games with Vernon — winning in 2013.
Young guns lead Junior Islanders to win The Delta Islanders provided a glimpse of their future while at the same time winning their B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season opener. With eight regulars still attending universities on both sides of the border, the Islanders called-up three players from their Intermediate “A” team to help in a 12-6 home floor victory over the Burnaby Lakers. Second-year intermediates Riley Phillips and Riley Taylor, along first-year Taylor Goundrey, helped overcome what would
have been a short bench. Phillips had a pair of goals and one assist. The biggest impact from an underage player came from Tre LeClaire. The No. 1 overall pick in 2015 Midget Draft showed he is more than ready to make the full-time jump to junior by recording seven points, including three goals. LeClaire’s older brother Griffen and Evan Messenger had five points each. The Islanders return to action Saturday when they travel to Nanaimo to face the Timbermen.
