Delta’s new police chief says taking over the helm of a department like this only comes around once in an officer’s career. “It seemed to be the perfect fit,” Neil Dubord said this week. Mayor Lois Jackson, who also chairs the Delta police board, announced last week that after an intensive search Dubord had been chosen to take over as Delta’s top cop. Dubord, who has
been chief of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police for the last three years, spent the previous 25 years with the Edmonton Police Department. He said he never worked with retired Delta police chief Jim Cessford, who spent more than two decades with the Edmonton police before coming to Delta. “He was a generation above me,” Dubord said of Cessford, who retired in February after 20 years at the helm of the local department.

KITTSON from page 1 Longtime Delta resident Margaret Kittson, who married into the Kittson family when she wed Lyall Kittson in the 1940s, told the Optimist she’s disappointed the house where she enjoyed many special memories was allowed to fall into such a state and will be torn down. She also wondered why

Delta doesn’t put greater effort into preserving such historically important houses. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, who chairs the heritage advisory commission, also expressed disappointment, but said a lot of work went into finding a solution. “We basically tried everything and I do take
my hat off to many members of our community who stepped up and looked at a range of options for Kittson House, possibly relocating it to another site. There were many possibilities that came forward, however, when we actually looked through a combination of logistics and costs, they weren’t doable. It also wasn’t doable to keep it on the site itself,” she said. “In the end, you do need
somebody, someone, some organization with the motivation and also the funding. That didn’t come together for Kittson. Having said that, we are looking at a range of options that are going to be coming forward as part of our heritage strategy.” Kanakos was referring to an updated Delta Heritage Strategy that’s been in the works for well over a year. Her commission retained

heritage consultant Donald Luxton to help formulate the document that has a series of recommended action plans. Still in draft form, the strategy, discussed at a recent Delta council workshop, sets a course until the mid-2020s, including setting up a heritage foundation or society as well as ways to update Delta’s rural and urban heritage inventories and incentives.

importantly a person who believes in community policing and our ‘no call too small’ mandate. “Mr. Dubord has all those qualities and a solid career behind him.” Noting he will take over the department at the end of June, Dubord said he has already started the process of making contacts in the community. He said Deltans will find that he is a chief who is highly accessible and available to the community. “Expect to see me in the community,” he said.

Delta police are hoping the public can help solve a mystery. The department is looking for the person that donated a distinctive cup and saucer to the Delta Hospital Auxiliary thrift shop last week after valuables were found inside. Police released a photo this week of the light green
set in the hopes of tracking down the owner. The item was dropped off at the Ladner thrift store some time between April 28 and May 1. Volunteers at the store found a valuable item inside the cup, which they believe was not meant to be donated. The volunteers immediately turned the valuable item into police for safekeeping and to locate the owner.
“We are seeking the public’s assistance to identify whoever donated the cup and saucer so we can return the valuable item to its proper owner,” said Sgt. Sarah Swallow. She said details about the item will need to be provided in order to confirm rightful ownership. Anyone with information is asked to email media@ deltapolice.ca or call 604946-4411 ext. 5016.

Delta hearing concerns over mailbox locations Municipal halll wants public to know it’s not involved in selection process; Canada Post is finalizing sites BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta wants to make sure the public knows that municipal hall isn’t deciding where Canada Post will install community mailboxes. That was the message delivered recently by the Corporation of Delta to residents as Canada Post gets ready to replace home delivery in Ladner with community mailboxes. “Delta has had no say in the locations of the community mailboxes, as the authority to determine the locations rests solely with Canada Post,” states a notice on the municipal website. “We support our residents and share the concerns of the community regarding the chosen locations for the community mailboxes.” Mayor Lois Jackson echoed that frustration, telling the Optimist the agency had promised to work with civic staff but ultimately will place the mailboxes wherever it wants. Noting complaints about the conversation have reached municipal hall, Jackson said she’s not sure if the locations have been decided. She said Delta also hasn’t been informed when Tsawwassen or North Delta will transition to community mailboxes.
“I am assuming there is twoway dialogue going on but we have to see if it’s actually happening or if it’s just lip service,” the mayor said. “We want to make sure we have input in the system because there is a lot of people FILE PHOTO not very happy.” Home delivery will be replaced by commuCanada Post nity mailboxes this fall in Ladner. late last year committed to ensuring the announced that transition will be handled Ladner would be the first responsibly and with Lower Mainland comrespect towards customers munity to see home mail delivery eliminated, a move and municipalities. Silver and red metallic streamers have been attached to the Kiwanis Longhouse in an effort to stop a woodpecker from drilling holes in the walls.
Longhouse’s decorative feature is for the birds BY
NOREEN FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor
The venerable Kiwanis Longhouse, home of the South Delta Artists Guild, has acquired a new and rather startling outside decorative feature. It’s drawing attention, moving and shining in the breeze. But what is it? It all started when guild member Ann Hilton noticed mysterious tapping sounds in early April when she was docent on duty in Gallery 1710. She immediately emailed guild president Rod Winning to advise him of the problem. “I kept hearing an odd noise so went outside to investigate,” she wrote. “Here a woodpecker was having a grand time making holes in the outside wall
closest to the curling rink.” Monica Burrow was the next guild artist to document the problem, which grew as the woodpecker, later identified as the beautiful and fairly common northern flicker continued its vigorous attack. Her photographs and comments were sent to Corporation of Delta staff, which flew into immediate action. They found 27 holes in the walls, drilled mostly through knots, with a few through into the inner foam insulation. The woodpecker has worked very fast in this spring nesting period to provide the guild with cross-current ventilation. Delta staff cut cedar siding patches to screw over each hole as a temporary measure until Care Pest Control completed its
assessment. The pest control company then suggested metal patches would be better because woodpeckers just carry on as usual with the cedar patches. The metal patches have now been installed. Besides being patched up, the Kiwanis Longhouse is also now all a-flutter with a more colourful deterrent: dozens of silver and red metallic streamers have been attached to the outside walls, to flash and move in sun and wind to chase away the flickers without harming them. Meantime, inside the Kiwanis Longhouse in Gallery 1710 is the guild’s current show, Tapestry, featuring artists’ views of their world. It’s on view Thursday through Sunday until May 24.

If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • April 27, 3:45 p.m., Highway 17 and 56th Street: Vehicle observed travelling 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone after merging from Highway 17A to Highway 17. The driver continued into the 60 km/h construction zone at the same high speed despite passing several 60 km/h signs. The vehicle was stopped by police and the driver given a ticket for not obeying the construction speed signs. Out of compassion for the driver’s wife and two infant children who were in the vehicle, the vehicle was not impounded. • April 29, 11:15 a.m., Highway 17: Vehicle stopped for travelling at an estimated 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. While speaking with the driver police observed drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The suspect was arrested and a search of the vehicle revealed approximately three grams of marijuana and three roaches. All items seized for destruction. The suspect was issued a ticket for speeding and then released at the scene. • May 1, 11:29 a.m., 1600-block of 56th Street: Police received a report of an intoxicated man attempting to drive despite being warned against it. Subsequently, he was

observed getting into his vehicle and then backing into another vehicle. Police located the suspect who provided two breath samples that both read “Fail.” He was issued a ticket, a 24-hour roadside suspension and his vehicle was impounded. Ladner • April 27, 11:09 a.m., 9500-block of Highway 10: During a traffic stop police found a trailer that was inadequately secured to the truck. Further inspection indicated the breakaway device was defective and the trailer brakes were unable to engage. The driver was given a ticket and the trailer privately towed from the scene. The trailer licence plate was seized to be returned to ICBC. • April 28, 3:34 p.m., 5800-block of Mountain View Boulevard: Police were requested to assist with an intoxicated male. He was found to be belligerent with police and medical staff and attempted to steal the hand sanitizer. The suspect was cleared medically and then arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. He was lodged in police cells to be released when sober without charge. • April 29, 11:51 a.m., 4400-block of Mountain View Crescent: Complainant reported she had received a fraudulent e-mail from the Canada Revenue Agency advising she was receiving an additional income tax refund. A link was provided and the complainant submitted her SIN, date of birth and full name. Following a request for credit card information the complainant realized she was a victim of fraud. She then contacted the CRA regarding the situation. The public is advised to be wary of emails requesting
personal information and to report the web addresses of any emails requesting such information. • April 30, 5:45 p.m., 5500-block of 50th Avenue: A report received that five young males were in the park with a rifle and hand gun. Police attended and located the youth with realistic looking Airsoft C8 rifle and a 357 Magnumstyle pellet gun that were confiscated. The youth were cautioned regarding the realism of the guns and their chosen location to use them.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW
Nothing cuts quite like a double-edged sword than news of a red-hot real estate market. There’s been much media attention paid recently to rising prices and bidding wars as the it-can’t-possibly-getany-higher Greater Vancouver housing market pushes into uncharted territory. This activity brings a smile to the faces of those watching their equity grow, but is a punch in the gut for those hoping the dream of home ownership hasn’t already turned into a nightmare. I was on the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board’s website this week to see exactly where prices are at in this area. The board uses what it calls a benchmark price, which is intended to be a typical property in the area, to gauge values. In Ladner, for a detached home, that number sat at $675,000 in March; in Tsawwassen, it was a whopping $796,000. I fiddled around with a mortgage calculator and it looks like you’d need to have an annual income north of $150,000 to carry the mortgage on one of these places, which would give you the privilege of being house poor for the next quarter of a century. That’s troubling given the vast majority of people, particularly those who have more recently entered the workforce, don’t make anywhere near that amount. It’s a figure most two-income families don’t get close to either. When Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau introduced his tax plan this week, he proposed increasing the burden on the wealthiest one per cent of Canadians, those people who make over $200,000. If you’re making in excess of $150,000, you’re approaching that kind of rarified air where the taxman takes notice, yet you barely qualify for a mortgage on a “typical” home in the suburbs. Something about that doesn’t add up. There’s a younger generation out there that’s either despondent over the chances of ever becoming a homeowner or the idea is so far-fetched they don’t even bother think about it. Either way it’s distressing and wasn’t the case for their parents or grandparents. There are all sorts of forces driving the real estate market, most of which are impossible to control, but it’s incumbent on our elected officials to do whatever they can to improve the situation for those looking to make the jump into home ownership. Densification to create smaller, more affordable homes seems like an obvious option, but that requires a buy-in from everyone. House prices make it abundantly clear that times are changing. Our thinking has to change too.
Agricultural community affords residents a treasured lifestyle DOUG HUSBAND
COMMUNITY COMMENT Like most of us living in an agricultural community, I look forward to this time of year. A few weeks past were the first signs of ploughed fields, with the fresh sod and earthy smells permeating the air. The agricultural community is always anxious to start the field prep, sometimes at its own peril as Mother Nature is not always co-operative. Rural roads are now busy with farm equipment moving from field to field and these oversized vehicle sometimes access highways 10 and 17A, so give them a break when they impede your motoring progress, however briefly. We enjoy our lifestyle because of the rural nature of their business ventures. Speaking of lifestyle, I was recently engaged in a bit of reminiscence of earlier times with Maureen Malenstyn, whose family and in-laws have been active in
Delta’s farm community since the Second World War. In those days, Delta’s economy was founded on farming and fishing and supporting retail and commerce in Ladner. I got a chuckle out of Maureen when I told her as a youngster my duty on a weekend, aside from cleaning and bedding cow stalls and shovelling out the pigpen, was churning butter. Few, if any, in the farm community ever purchased butter or milk products. For those unfamiliar in making butter, the “cream” or thicker textured milk rises to the top of the pail or container. The “cream” is skimmed off with some of it used with porridge or breakfast cereals. The accumulation of cream is stored cooled and once a week, or as needed, a family member (myself or another junior) had the task of sitting with a large glass container equipped with a rotating handle, turning a wooden paddle slowly — and I mean slowly — “churning” the cream into a thick yellow butter. It was such a relief to note the thickening mass; the paddle was an improvement over shaking the container or using a plunger. The butter would be removed and block shaped with a bit of salt added, stored and ready for use. This pro-

cess would take an hour or so out of a “busy” youngster’s life. During this time I found my city cousins disbelieving milk and butter came from cows we had in the barn. They were convinced milk came from a glass milk bottle that was purchased in a grocery store or delivered to their front porch by a milkman. Nor did they believe eggs came from chickens until they tenuously placed a hand under a hen and clutched a newly laid egg. Such was the life of a young person in the 1940s in rural Delta. This bit of reminiscing made me realize how fast Canada has morphed into a modern society. Only a half century earlier, Canada was first connected by rail line. How many recall the name of the top-hatted, white-bearded gentleman who laid the last spike on behalf of the CPR on Nov. 7, 1885 in B.C.’s Selkirk Range, connecting the terminus in Port Moody, B.C.? We’re only a generation or two removed from B.C.’s historical past and our own unique agricultural history. And a good night to you, Maureen. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta and a practising mediator of civil litigation disputes.

Buses aren’t the answer
Editor: Re: Mayors’ plan is the best choice for Delta, May 1 I read in amazement former Delta mayor Beth Johnson’s statement, “When you add buses to the streets, it actually reduces traffic,” for if she had read anything on the subject, she would have found that buses are very poor in attracting the motorist from the car, thus very poor in reducing congestion. If anyone cares to remember, during the transit strike in 2001, while UBC was in session, air quality dramatically improved (GVRD) and the road congestion from all the buses disappeared.
If buses were so good in reducing congestion, why has the region invested over $9 billion on three lightmetro lines? Or, despite the $9 billion investment in light-metro, why has mode share by cars remained at 57 per cent in the region since 1994? Sadly, Johnson hasn’t a clue what she is talking about and being chair of Metro’s transportation and strategic planning committee in the late 1990s is one of the architects of the fiscal sinkhole that TransLink finds itself today. Why is Johnson trying to sell a transit plan that has not been peer reviewed or has been vetted by transit experts to guarantee the
Patient gets the runaround Editor: Thank you for your excellent coverage of Delta Hospital doctors’ concerns about the lack of surgical beds. I have needed surgical care twice. In 2005, I went to Delta Hospital with a very serious bowel infection. Dr. Segal treated me with great care, but he had to send me to Richmond for surgery to remove eight inches of bowel. After surgery I had to stay in Richmond for my recovery period because of the lack of surgical beds at our hospital. Last October I developed a serious heart problem and was sent to Delta Hospital. I stayed in the ER for five days before once again being sent to Richmond for surgery. An emergency bed had to be kept for me in Delta
as I travelled to Richmond and back by ambulance. Another day in Delta Hospital followed for recovery. Surely these experiences are indicative of the inefficient ways of the Fraser Health Authority, apparently supported by B.C.’s minister of health. Aren’t emergency beds more costly to maintain than acute beds? What if Delta’s ER had needed that bed kept all day for me to return? Doctors at Delta Hospital saved my life twice but were obliged to use precious ambulance time to send me elsewhere for problems they could have taken care of themselves on-site. Wake up, Minister Terry Lake, and do right by Delta citizens. Louise Long
Heard justifications before Editor: Re: Politicians give themselves raise, May 1 As reported in your paper, Mayor Lois Jackson voted herself an additional $4,009 per year raise, which equates to a 3.5 per cent increase. Coupled with the nearly three per cent from last year, she has voted herself a rather healthy raise of six-plus per cent over the last two years. Very few people reading this letter were so fortunate. I certainly wasn’t. What really upset me was her justification: “Delta employs a small council that covers a large and complex community.” I’ve read this same statement every time she gives
herself a raise, along with her “everybody hates dealing with this” statement. The only statement she didn’t regurgitate this time was, “You need to pay top money to attract top talent.” She knew this situation existed when she again ran for office. I am truly looking forward to the day we have a mayor (or any politician for that matter) that doesn’t insult my intelligence by spouting verbal diarrhea. It probably isn’t going to happen in my lifetime as there are usually no consequences for making questionable, self-serving decisions unless they are of a criminal nature. Robert W. Craig
“Mayors’ Plan” will reduce congestion or even provide better transit? The present TransLink transportation plans are nothing more than political vanity projects, designed more for cutting ribbons at election time and rewarding political friends (developers) rather than providing the region with an affordable and efficient public transit service. It is sad to see former politicos jumping on the “yes” bandwagon, spewing hype and hoopla, for a transit plan that will not reduce congestion but will greatly increase the cost of providing regional transit. Editor: Yes, after more than two years, we are still fighting the plan to erect five 45metre (150-foot) AM radio transmitters adjacent to the Tsawwassen/Point Roberts border. No, it’s not over. The Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers has had two important victories in Whatcom County, Wash., which are now being appealed in Washington State Superior Court. The county rulings used specific height restrictions in Point Roberts to rule against the project. The appeal is also a land use issue. Unfortunately, we cannot argue any of the points so critical to our continued

keting. It looks like we may well need another $75,000 US to get through the next phase. Yes, we still need everyone’s help. But, we’ll make it as easy and as much fun as we can to donate. On June 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Harris Barn in Ladner, there will be an Art & Lifestyle auction, with Ian Paton at the gavel. Norm Grohmann will host the event, which features both a fun live auction and a silent auction. There will also be refreshments available, free parking and we’ll accept cheques and credit cards. Between now and then, we are accepting donations of object d’art and travel

Items so far include a Mediterranean cruise, a Toni Onley water colour, a signed print hand-selected for us by Robert Bateman and more. There will be something for every pocketbook. The Optimist has been a terrific supporter of our fight and we’d like to invite all your readers to join us on June 7. It will be a great, fun way to support the fight. health and peace of mind — the failure to report the population of Tsawwassen in the applications, the harmful blanketing interference that will result from the massive transmission wattage and the potential negative health impacts on our bodies and our wildlife. So, in order to prevent this travesty, it is imperative we prevail at this next level. We will need to continue to employ our land use expert attorney and, to do that, we need additional donations to the legal fund. Amazingly, our two communities have raised over $130,000 US, 98 per cent of which has gone directly to legal costs, with the other two per cent spent on mar-

Rabbit Mix Breed, Grey, Neutered Male Bunny, (Approximately 6 months old)
Earl Grey was brought in to the shelter through the Travelling Tails program, with his sibling Chair Latte. Earl Grey is a very sweet bunny who is quick to say “hello,” especially if you have a treat! He loves to be pet by the ears and on his back but doesn’t sit still very long to enjoy some cuddles. Earl Grey is a very active rabbit who will require space to roam around and explore his environment. Earl Grey should not be homed with another rabbit as he acts aggressively towards them. At the shelter he hasn’t taken to a liking to the dry pellet food, so he is getting fresh veggies twice a day and his favorite is spinach.
Editor: Re: ‘Paranoid malcontents’ are behind baseless criticism, letter to the editor, April 29 The Optimist is a great source of information and opinions, and offers the opportunity to have our personal views challenged by the perspectives of our neighbours. It is unfortunate when writers move beyond the issues and get into name calling and bullying. Bill C-51 is controversial and both proponents
and opponents have sound points to be defended. Each side is worthy of respect and each side deserves to be given consideration. The ability to have public discussion of proposed legislation, particularly when it concerns something as basic as freedom, is a critical prerequisite for democracy. Attacking those on either side of the debate as being “stupid, liars, paranoid, malcontents and sanctimonious” is not only discourteous but also discouraging
of public debate. The writer begins his letter by seeming to imply that he understands how secret police, the Gestapo and the KGB operate, and we should therefore just trust our own CSIS. In fact, his main argument in favour of Bill C-51 seems to be the police need more power and we should give it to them because we trust them. Unfortunately, that is exactly the same argument made by the political parties that created the KGB, the Gestapo and many
autocratic governments. Furthermore, one of the main strategies used by autocratic regimes to move from democracy to dictatorship is to use name calling, labeling and bullying against anyone who voices opposition to their plans. If we value freedom we should respect the right of our neighbours to voice their opinions without fear of being verbally abused or shamed even when we strongly disagree with those opinions. MLA concerned bill will further erode privacy Legislation corrupts fundamental right of democracy VICKI HUNTINGTON
MLA’S REPORT I’ve been quite troubled this session with several bills that have been introduced in the legislature. One is the upcoming Election Amendment Act. This bill is disturbing for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is the continuing erosion of our privacy at the hands of government. The act will require the chief electoral officer to give registered political parties a list of individuals who voted in the last election. This isn’t the voters list mind you, this is a list of who actually voted. For years, a candidate’s volunteers (scrutineers) have sat in the polling stations on election day and crossed the names of voters off the list so that other volunteers can phone supporters and make sure they vote. It’s classic electioneering and it even has a name: GOTV, or get out the vote. But volunteers are scarce these days and the parties have decided to get Elections BC to simply provide an official list of everyone who voted. I personally believe this interferes with the duties of the most important independent officer in British Columbia and corrupts the most fundamental right of

democracy: our right to a secret ballot. The list won’t say how one voted, but it will allow (to quote the information and privacy commissioner) “... political parties to receive personal information in a comprehensive and accessible format after voting day in order to perform analytics and other uses ... [T]he purpose of the disclosure is not directly tied to getting out the vote.” In other words, it’s about party machines expanding their ability to identify and target voters. The act also says only registered political parties can have the list and deliberately excludes “candidates” and “registered constituency associations.” Receiving a list of voter turnout in the first place is wrong, but if the bill passes, it will force the chief electoral officer to disenfranchise independent candidates and require Elections BC to show a bias in favour of registered political parties — to the detriment of our democracy. I’ve written the minister of justice to express my concerns and have introduced an amendment that would respect both the privacy commissioner’s recommendations and our democratic institutions (Elections BC) by ensuring political parties are not provided with a voter turnout list. I’ve also introduced a second amendment designed to level the play-

ing field and ensure independent candidates are not discriminated against. I am hopeful that my colleagues will respect the advice of the commissioner and support at least one of my amendments: democracy demands privacy and fair play.

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS to spread an important message is through your social circles, your own sphere of influence. National Hospice Palliative Care Week’s official theme for 2015 is The Power of 10: Let’s talk about Hospice Palliative Care. We urge you to talk with 10 people — friends, family, acquaintances — about the importance of quality hospice palliative care in Canada. Our hope is that this critical message will be spread exponentially, like ripples in a pond, by each of your contacts — whether face-to-face, e-mail, or social media — use the information below as a conversation starter.
Hospice Palliative Care: Living Well Until End of Life WHAT IS HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE?
Hospice palliative care aims to relieve suffering, while improving the quality of living and dying.
DOES RECEIVING HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE MEAN THAT DEATH IS COMING SOON?
Hospice palliative care is not just for the final days or months of life. It’s care that should begin when a life-threatening condition is diagnosed so that individuals and their families are supported as they manage the often complicated journey at the end of life.
WHAT DOES INTEGRATED HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE MEAN?
An integrated palliative approach to care is one that focuses on an individual’s need at any given point in time. It can be provided in a hospital, residential hospice, at home, in long-term care homes or in another community setting. Personal values, wishes and desires can be considered. Advance Care Planning (www.advancecareplanning.ca), a discussion about individual plans at the end of life, is an important part of an integrated approach to care.
HOW IS HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE DIFFERENT FROM THE HEALTH CARE I AM RECEIVING NOW?
Hospice palliative care professionals work with the health team you already have, and together they focus on lessening the burdens of suffering, loneliness, and grief for those living with chronic and life-limiting illnesses.
DOES HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE APPLY TO FAMILIES?
Hospice palliative care supports families as they navigate the difficulties that can arise when a loved one is struggling with a life-limiting illness. Through hospice palliative care, families can gain a better understanding of a loved one’s wishes, which can ease the way when there are difficult decisions to make.
WHAT DIFFERENCE WILL HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE MAKE?
Hospice palliative care manages pain and symptoms, and thanks to the important conversations and planning that hospice palliative care encourages, patients can make informed decisions about their own care, ensure that their families understand their goals, and have a better quality of life.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Brigitte has won $100 Gift Certificate from White Spot & a day pass for family of 4 to Splashdown Park.

What is clean eating all about?
Clean eating is a growing trend among people focused on health and wellness. A relatively simple concept of selecting foods that are minimally processed, clean eating intends to instill a greater understanding of the pathway between a food’s origins and the final products that end up on grocery store shelves and dinner tables. Choosing whole or “real” foods that are as close to their natural forms as possible is a staple of clean eating. The availability of convenience food products has never been greater, and not all packaged foods are unhealthy. But clean eating encourages consumers to be more aware of the ingredients in the foods they eat while selecting those foods that are minimally processed. Many foods desig-
Clean eating starts with selecting fresh fruits and vegetables and other foods that are in their most natural form.
nated as “clean,” including vegetables and fruits, whole grains, free-range meats, low-fat dairy products, unsalted nuts, and whole seeds, are straight from the farm.
Many health experts advise that refined sugar is a large contributor to unnecessary calories. Many people can get all the energy they need by consuming foods with natural sugars.
Another component of clean eating is eliminating or greatly reducing the consumption of refined sugar.
If an ingredient list includes names you cannot recognize or if the natural form of the food has been changed, it cannot be included in a clean-eating plan. Also, foods that have a lot of additives, including salt, sugar and fat, are not classified as clean.

Taking care of the equipment that takes care of you.
The benefits to clean eating are numerous. Increasing intake of fruits and vegetables can boost your immune system and serve as a nutritious way to maintain a healthy weight. Clean eating may help you become more conscious of everything from meal ingredients to portion sizes. Those interested in clean eating can begin slowly. Start to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and farmfresh foods into your diet. Look for foods in their natural form, such as whole oats and other grains. Avoid highly refined ingredients and limit sugar and salt intake. Opt for fresh herbs and spices to season food.

ith an extended closure on the horizon, Genesis Theatre is hosting a fundraising event next week that will take concertgoers on a musical journey. The theatre at Delta Secondary in Ladner is undergoing seismic upgrading and will be closed for 14 months starting in July. Theatre manager Steve Campbell says they’re hoping to finish the season with a few extra concerts, including a major fundraiser featuring The Rockingbyrds, a newly-formed group he says is made up of some of the best local musicians around.
Featuring Ladner’s Rachael Chatoor, who has been working tirelessly to promote the performing arts in the community, Russell Marsland of R&B Allstars and Jeff Neill of Streetheart, The Rockingbyrds have put together a unique show that spans decades of music performed in an acoustic guitar and vocal trio. Described as having a unique voice and diverse musical talent, Vancouver native Chatoor has been a part of the local music scene since the early 1990s. Marsland is a writer, producer, guitarist and vocalist who has performed with the
likes of the Allman Brothers, Chuck Berry, War, James Brown and Ray Charles. He began performing at an early age and is getting ready to launch his second original album. Neill’s recording career has spanned three decades, earning him more than two dozen gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards worldwide with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Streetheart, Loverboy and Jimmy Barnes. Over the years he has worked in the studio with a wide variety of artists from Joe Cocker to Keith Urban, and he has shared
stages with The Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top and Sting. Campbell says he’s hoping to raise some funds to help hold the theatre over during the closure and maintain contact with patrons and clients so Genesis is ready to open after the upgrades are complete in September of 2016. The show is on Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20 and are available at the door or online at www.eventbrite.ca/e/anevening-with-the-rockingbyrds-tickets16422411876.
Art partnership benefits care home residents BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The artwork of six Mountain View Manor residents was celebrated this week at the South Delta Artists’ Guild. Every week for the last two years, a guild artist has been visiting the care home at Delta Hospital to do art with a group of residents. The partnership between the two organizations was celebrated on Monday with
lunch and an exhibit of the residents’ work. Lisa Diver, program coordinator at the care home, said the weekly sessions allow the residents an opportunity to creatively express who they are, leaving them with a sense of empowerment. “We try to promote that there,” she said. Diver said the simple act of creating art can improve residents’ self-esteem and confidence; it can also
help with socialization and camaraderie, and assist residents from feeling isolated. “They’re really fun ladies to work with,” said Dennis Walsh, who has been visiting Mountain View Manor weekly for the last year. “They’ve been incredible,” he said. “They’ve developed their own style.” Painter Carla Weaver was the first guild artist to paint with the residents two
years ago. She said over that time they have worked in different mediums. “It’s just whatever they want to do,” she said. “They just enjoy the activity and the peacefulness.” In addition to Weaver and Walsh, a number of guild members who have taken part in the program, including Lennart Osterlind, Toshiko Oshima, Barb Glass, Marlene Strain, Jan Strehler and Gary Fox.

New York museum salutes early immigrants BY
CHRIS MCBEATH

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is one of the more intriguing activities New York has to offer. Housed at 97 Orchard St., the museum is part of a unique network of “social conscience” museums that use real life stories and heirlooms to recreate history. Here, it’s of the everyday lives of those immigrants who helped shape New York’s history and culture. In its heyday at the turn of the last century, this part of the city produced 85 per cent of garments for the entire United States, and the area teemed with new arrivals: Jewish Eastern Europeans, Germans, Irish, Italians and others. Most came with the intent of living the American dream, but the facts of their lives were stark. Tenement living was crowded, noisy and unsanitary, and always either too hot or too cold. Yet with little choice, from 1863 to 1935, some 7,000 immigrants made 97 Orchard St. their home. By the mid 1930s, when legislation required landlords to fireproof hallways and undertake other upgrades, many of these cockroach-infested tenements were torn down. Except for No. 97, where the owner deemed it easier to evict the tenants and board the building up. This is how it remained for more than half a century during which it has become something akin to a time capsule. The

faded wallpaper still oozes the smell of soot from the coal-burning stoves, the paint work has turned the colour of tobacco and the stained wooden staircases creak at every step with the pain and anguish of the building’s history. One of the oldest tenements in New York, No. 97 is typical of its day. Each of the five floors accommodates four tiny apartments, no more than 350 square feet, and each housed an average of six people as well as, in many instances, the family business. The intimate stories of the building’s past

occupants are compelling. The Gumpertz family’s dream for a better life took an unexpected turn when one day in 1878 Nathalie Gumpertz’s shoemaker husband went to work and never returned, forcing his wife into the dressmaking business (out of the front room) in order to support her four young children. One child was dead within a year. Then there is the rags to riches history of Polish-born Harris and Jennie Levine and their four children who lived, worked, cooked, ate and slept in three tiny rooms that were — and still are — crammed with
beds, cribs and household essentials alongside machinery that comprised a small garment factory. As with all the families represented here, research is a slow, time-consuming process of delving into genealogy, exploring their trades and work, and the things they could have afforded and would have liked to put in their home. Wherever possible, family members were tracked down to help recreate a reallife story. Although it can take years to gather enough information to re-occupy an apartment, it’s an approach that has made the Tenement Museum both a National Historic Landmark and a founding member of the International Coalition of Historic Site Museums of Conscience, a worldwide network that use a site’s history to explore contemporary social issues ranging from racism to genocide. Members include South Africa’s District Six (Apartheid) Museum, The Gulag Museum (Russia), The Slave House (Senegal) and The Workhouse (England). At the Tenement Museum, displays show how immigrants shaped the garment industry that seems to have changed little from one century to the next. The Lower East Side currently houses an estimated 500 garment factories, 80 per cent of which are owned by Chinese immigrants. Hence, history is shedding light on a very current issue. Rock School celebrates 10th anniversary SUBMITTED PHOTO
Marty Hatlelid (centre) is celebrating 10 years of Guitar Marty’s Rock School this year. Over the last decade, Guitar Marty has mentored 350 budding rock stars.
Special
Mother’s Day
From September to June, the secondary schools here in Delta ramp up their academies, keeping the kids productive and feeding their dreams. But in the summer, Guitar Marty’s Rock School keeps the music and those dreams firing. This year is the 10th anniversary of kids ages 10 to 17 banding together to play favourite tunes. Over the decade, 350 young folks have experienced this, many ending up with not only musical knowledge, but lasting friendships through bands that grow and even perform. Marty Hatlelid (a.k.a Guitar Marty), a professional musician since his own teen years, has been teaching kids how to rock in these week-long summer camps for a decade and has
been a significant part of the local music scene even longer. Camps run three hours a day, and young musicians and vocalists learn what it is to be part of a band, from coming up with a name and beginning a song together, to performing on stage. Every year culminates in a November concert that rocks the Ladner Community Centre. The first camp begins June 22 and continues weekly through mid August. More information is available at www.guitarmarty.com/rock-school.

Wishes from
Richport Ford To realize the essence of Mother’s Day, it is essential to understand a mother. She is the person who introduced you to the greatest gift on earth called life. She made you realize the real value of life by acting as a guiding force and a guardian angel whenever you were left helpless before the thorny path called life. She has been there whenever you needed moral support and a shoulder to cry. It was only with pride that she could watch your growth and success. Being a mother is not a cakewalk as her every action and word is gospel to her child. She instils not only confidence and self-belief but also teaches moral values and the real meaning of life. No words are enough to thank her for the sacrifice and hardship she endures in bringing up her children. To all the mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, step-mothers, step-grandmothers and mothers-to-be, we celebrate you On your special day.
From Everyone at Richport Ford,
Happy Mother’s Day

Keeping those rhododendrons healthy anne marrison
Green Room This week I answer readers’ questions: Q: My rhodos are getting dried-up leaves and buds, so I cut them off. Will this kill the rhodo? How do you care for rhododendrons? A: Whether your rhododendrons will die from the pruning you did could depend on how much you cut off. The rule of thumb for pruning is never remove more than one-third of your tree/shrub at one time. It’s best to space severe pruning over several years. Generally, most rhododendrons handle moderate pruning well. This is especially true if your rhododendrons are well established and most of the
branches remain with leaves that are still green. But after pruning, flowering may be reduced the following year. If the leaves you removed were brown and crispy, the plants could be badly dehydrated. This is even more likely if they were growing in pots. The ideal situation for containerized rhododendrons is growing in very large containers in a mixed sun/shade situation where sunshine gives gentle light and warmth and their soil is mulched to conserve moisture. But even growing in an outside garden, rhododendrons still need watering in times of drought Summer last year was very hot, dry and long and it could be your rhodos didn’t get enough water. Another issue with containers is that fierce heat in summer can attack plant roots through the sides of the pot. There are two pos-
sibilities for the dried-up buds. Dehydration is one. But they could also have a fungal disease called bud blast. Infected buds are brown, hard and don’t flower. As spring continues, the bud surface develops black, furry-looking fruiting spores. These buds need to be removed before they can continue the disease into another year. This infection is thought to be spread by leaf-hop-
pers. Check the underside of your rhodo leaves in late spring/early summer. If you see little white crawlers, this will be the larval stage of leaf-hoppers. Insecticidal soap will kill them on contact. But like all killing sprays, it can kill beneficial insects too — and the person applying it needs to be cautious and follow instructions. Q: Is it time to plant tomato plants outside yet?
A: When temperatures are following their normal pattern, mid-May is about the right time to put tomatoes outside. Until then the nights are cold and tomatoes may not die, but they don’t grow and take a while to recover when the weather does warm up. If you have your tomatoes in pots and have a sheltered spot for them, by a south or west wall, I suggest you put just one
pot outside and see how the plant does. If it grows normally and looks healthy after a few days, your others could follow. But keep watching the weather forecasts for a couple of weeks in case an unexpected cold snap is predicted. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca It helps me if you can mention the name of your city or region.

Undercurrents Have you ever stood on a sandy beach just a little way into the incoming waves? If you stand in one place the outflow undercurrent will erode the sand you stand on and eventually cause you to move. Undercurrents reveal whether your foundation is solid. How about the undercurrents of change that continually whirl around us in daily life? Will we try to live as if they don’t affect us or will we seek out the appropriate place and manner by which we will make our stand in the midst of shifting realities? In our comfortable South Delta communities, undercurrents of change are swirling. Development in the form of an expanded port, the destination mall on TFN lands, the

provincial government’s plans for a new bridge, and with all this ease of access to our treasured communities we add the Stats Canada immigration projections of population increase from Asian and Pacific nations. It is quite a mix of undercurrents that will unquestionably reveal whether our foundations are strong enough to accommodate such realities. It won’t be enough to just wait and see what will happen. We, in general as society, and specifically as churches and faith communities would do well to plan, prepare and be confident that we will be able to stand with a faithful response of God’s love and the open arms of welcome to all who come our way.

Meanwhile, the Islanders are thriving defensively thanks to solid goaltending from Ryland Hood and Matt Keith, along with impact transition players. Third-year Jordan Gilles, acquired in a trade with Coquitlam, made his debut against the Bellies and was outstanding. Combined with Brad Hofmann and Reece Callies, the Islanders have three veteran defensive stalwarts to build around. It’s no coincidence Hofmann is the new team captain and Gilles an assistant. “The thing that jumps out at me right now is our depth,” said head coach Greg Rennie. “It’s a combination of a lot of things, including the work we put in during the offseason to put this roster together. Our rookies have really stepped up for us. “The encouraging thing is we are about to get back one of our leading scorers from last year (Chase Fraser), our top scorer in the playoffs (Jon Phillips) and a guy who was second in the intermediate

A sensational start to Tre Leclaire’s junior career is getting league-wide attention but it’s the other end of the floor where the unbeaten Delta Islanders should be equally enthused. The Islanders are the only undefeated team remaining in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League thanks to their third straight win Tuesday night — a 9-4 victory over the New West Salmonbellies at histroic Queen’s Park Arena. Leclaire is showing why he was the number one overall pick in the 2015 midget draft two years ahead of schedule. The league’s reigning playerof-the-week scored four goals and added one assist. He leads all scorers with 17 points and will look to pad his totals this weekend when Delta hosts Port Coquitlam on Saturday at Sungod Arena (7:30 pm) and travel to Victoria Sunday. Lexie Brenneis is a force for University of Montana.
South Delta softball standouts Lexie Brenneis and Anna Battison have been recognized for their impressive campaigns at American schools. Brenneis is Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year and All-Conference Second Team after an outstanding season at the University of Montana. Battison earned a spot on the All-Sun Conference First Team thanks to a productive year at EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Brenneis, who graduated from Delta Secondary last June, thrived in the Grizzlies’ inaugural season. The starting catcher led the team in several offensive categories including batting average (.400), home runs (11) and RBIs (53). Those numbers also ranked top five in the conference. “She has been instrumental in the success of the middle of our lineup and handling the pitching staff,” Montana head coach Jamie Pinkerton
said. “She is also just a great person, and a great teammate, and I believe she cares more about the team’s success than her own personal success.” “We are extremely excited for Lexie. She had a great freshman campaign and is deserving of this honor.” Brenneis, who was a key member of an outstanding 1996 Delta Heat team, is the lone Canadian on the roster. Meanwhile, Battison continued her impressive career with the Eagles, leading the team with a .363 average, on base percentage (.458) and stolen bases (22) as a sophomore. The South Delta secondary graduate also was her team’s starting catcher and set a school record by throwing out 10 runners on 38 steal attempts against her. Battison closed out her youth career with the 1995 Surrey Storm, winning a silver medal at nationals in her final year.

Public Notice
Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Public Comment Period on Environmental Impact Statement OTTAWA, April 30, 2015 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) announces that the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project is now available to the public. The EIS was prepared by the proponent, Port Metro Vancouver, and provides an analysis of the potential environmental effects of the project and measures to mitigate those impacts. The Agency invites members of the public, Aboriginal groups, governments and other participants to submit their views in writing on the completeness of the information presented in the EIS as measured against the EIS Guidelines. A resource document to assist participants in submitting comments on the completeness of the EIS is available on the public registry. All comments will be posted on the Agency’s online public registry. Written comments in either official language should be sent by June 15, 2015 by mail or email to: Debra Myles, Panel Manager Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency 22nd Floor, 160 Elgin Street, Ottawa ON K1A 0H3 RobertsBank@ceaa-acee.gc.ca
The EIS Guidelines, updated in April 2015, now include the requirement for information and analysis on the potential environmental effects of marine shipping associated with the project. Once the Agency receives the additional information on marine shipping from the proponent, a public comment period on the completeness of the marine shipping information will occur.

Port Metro Vancouver proposes the construction and operation of a new three-berth marine container terminal located at Roberts Bank in Delta, approximately 35 km south of Vancouver. The proposed project, to be located next to the existing Deltaport and Westshore Terminals, would provide an additional 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units of container capacity per year at Roberts Bank.
