That’s one heck of a honeymoon
Ladner couple starts married life by cycling all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina during 19-month odyssey BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Ladner’s Bryan Kinshella and Maggie Woo recently returned from a 19-month journey that saw them cycle from B.C. to Buenos Aires. The trip, which was the couple’s honeymoon, saw them return home via boat and train before three more days of cycling from Seattle. The overall experience was fantastic, Kinshella said, noting they learned Spanish and met many interesting people over the course of their travels. Woo said they really liked cycling because it got them in touch with the landscapes they traveled through. The couple passed through small villages, ate farm fresh produce and “stumbled into things you don’t see in guide books,” she said. For instance, they found a Carnaval celebration in Guatemala in a little town where they were the only foreigners and were invited up onto one of the floats in a parade, she said. Petition makes it to Victoria
Huntington introduces 10,000-name document calling for restoration of surgical services Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington introduced a 10,000-name petition in the legislature yesterday calling on the provincial government to restore surgical services at Delta Hospital. “Since our doctors raised their concerns in October, the community response has been tremendous,” said Huntington. “The people of Delta care deeply about their hospital and the services it provides. We value what our doctors have to say and when they spoke, the community responded. I’m honoured to present this petition on behalf of the residents of Delta.” Friends of Delta Hospital collected the signatures requesting the province restore 24-hour surgical services at Delta Hospital. Huntington has raised the issue repeatedly in the legislature and has been asking Health Minister Terry Lake to meet with the doctors since last year.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington introduces a petition in the legislature yesterday morning that calls on the provincial government to restore surgical services at Delta Hospital. The signatures were collected by Friends of Delta Hospital. “We’re slowly making progress,” said the independent MLA. “The minister has now agreed to a meet-
ing with the doctors, which is a first step. This petition will help to put pressure on the Fraser Health Authority
and the Ministry of Health to grant our community the same level of care provided in other jurisdictions.”
The petition has been circulating in Ladner and Tsawwassen for several months.
HONEYMOON from page 1 Another highlight was visiting many natural hot springs going through northern Chile, Kinshella said. The remote area was at about 4,000 metres of elevation, he said, noting there was hardly anybody around. Woo said it was one of the toughest parts of the trip, explaining that there was less oxygen due to the elevation, and no shade from the sun during the day and then extremely cold at night. A surreal moment during the journey was crossing two huge salt flats in Bolivia, she said. They were perfectly flat and white and
made you think you were riding across a giant ice rink, she said. In terms of planning and preparation, they used a guidebook going through the United States, Kinshella said, but once they left the U.S. they bought maps as they went and looked up routes along the way, talking to people to find out what they wanted to see. They used touring bikes they bought used off Craigslist for the trip. Cycling is one of the cheapest ways to travel, said Woo. “You have your transportation. You’re carrying your house. You don’t need gas.
Maggie Woo and Bryan Kinshella cycle past the Volcan Sajama in Bolivia. It’s just food,” she said. The couple packed tents, sleeping bags, a little stove and pots. They carried a lot of food. “We liked the idea of being able to stop anywhere along the way and having
three or four days to get to the next town, instead of having to be there tonight,” Kinshella said. They also had a transmit-only spot satellite GPS tracker. The trip was also a

Earl Grey
Rabbit Mix Breed, Grey, Neutered Male Bunny, (Approximately 6 months old)
Earl Grey was brought in to the shelter through the Travelling Tails program, with his sibling Chair Latte. Earl Grey is a very sweet bunny who is quick to say “hello,” especially if you have a treat! He loves to be pet by the ears and on his back but doesn’t sit still very long to enjoy some cuddles. Earl Grey is a very active rabbit who will require space to roam around and explore his environment. Earl Grey should not be homed with another rabbit as he acts aggressively towards them. At the shelter he hasn’t taken to a liking to the dry pellet food, so he is getting fresh veggies twice a day and his favorite is spinach.

Stretch of Trunk Road in East Ladner will finally be rid of those big trucks BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Delta is one step closer to getting big rigs off Ladner Trunk Road. In December, the municipality sent a request to TransLink to remove Trunk Road, between Highway 17A and 72nd Street, from the region’s Major Road Network. TransLink approved the request at the end of March and on
Monday civic politicians gave preliminary approval to a bylaw amendment needed to remove that section from the truck route. It is something the municipality has been working on for more than a decade. “Certainly this is the conclusion of a very long process,” said engineering director Steven Lan. Coun. Bruce McDonald said Delta first asked for
signs restricting truck traffic on that stretch of road 20 years ago. “We’ve finally been able to get this done,” he said. Once the bylaw amendment receives final approval, which should take place by the end of the month, staff will arrange for signage to reflect the changes to the truck route and notify truckers. Lan said the municipality would also be in contact with the B.C.

Fraudster looking to collect overdue taxes
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • May 5, 2:53 a.m., Pacific Drive: Complainant received a call from the alarm company indicating the alarm was activated at the property he is renovating. On investigation the complainant found the chain he uses to secure the door cut. Police attended with the K9 dog unit but no suspects were located. Suspect likely fled the residence when the alarm sounded. • May 5, 6:58 a.m., 1700-block of 55A Street: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his Chevy truck was stolen from his residence. The vehicle is described as having no damage and contained an engine tuner,
sunglasses and a subwoofer. Information regarding the vehicle added to the police database. • May 5, 12:14 p.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: Video surveillance recorded a male and female enter the liquor store, select two bottles of Crown Royal whiskey and two bottles of Grey Goose vodka, and conceal the bottles in the female’s bag. The female then left the store without paying. Police obtained still photographs from the video surveillance for identification. • May 7, 7:22 p.m., 1100-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported he left his vehicle unlocked in the parking lot while he went to the nearby bank for about five minutes. When he returned he found the trunk open and his set of golf clubs stolen. Complainant advised police that he is periodically checking Craigslist in an attempt to locate the clubs. • May 8 1:34 a.m., 56th Street and 16th Avenue: During a routine traffic stop police located a driver displaying a mild odour of liquor on his breath and
slurred speech. The driver admitted to drinking one beer before driving. Two breath samples provided by the suspect read “Warn” and as a consequence a threeday roadside and driving suspension was issued and his driver’s license seized. The vehicle was impounded and the suspect and his passenger left the area in a taxi. Ladner • May 4, 1:39 p.m., 28th Avenue: Complainant reported a motorcycle was stolen from a trailer parked at the rear of his rural property. The bike is described as a blue and white Yamaha dirt motorbike with a Washington state license plate. Information regarding the bike entered in the police database. • May 4, 1:22 p.m., Harvest Drive and Ladner Trunk Road: A cell phone was found in the area. The phone is locked and described as a black LG Nexus. The owner can claim on identification at police headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Way, Ladner. • May 5, 7:45 a.m., 5600block of Ladner Trunk
Road: Police attended a rear ender. The driver of the offending vehicle indicated she was looking down at her handbag when she collided with the vehicle stopped in front of her. Alcohol and speed were not a factor and neither party suffered injuries. The offending driver was issued a ticket for driving without due care and her vehicle was towed from the scene. • May 5, 11:39 a.m.,
9900-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant received a phone call from a party claiming to be from a police agency requesting her father pay $2,450 immediately via Western Union to avoid being arrested for overdue taxes. As her father had no issues with the CRA, the complainant believed the call might be fraud. No personal information or payment was provided by the caller. Police

Where the
action originates Maintaining civic amenities starts at the Delta Works Yard
This is the second installment of Off Limits, a series in which Optimist reporter Dave Willis goes where the public isn’t able to tread. He’ll provide a behind-the-scenes look at various operations in the community over the coming weeks.
T
he Delta Works Yard is tucked away just south of Highway 99. The facility on 64th Street, which includes an office area, garage, stores warehouse, electrical shop and large central open space, is the place that keeps Delta running. Pretty much anything you see on municipal property is maintained out of the works yard, explains deputy director of engineering operations Dave Halliday. Everything from parks, streets, drainage and streetlights to traffic signals, underground utilities, dikes and the grounds around municipal buildings are looked after via the works yard. “This the action cenBY DAVE tre where all the action originates from,” Halliday says. Equipment civic workers use is maintained at the yard, while there is a garage where police and fire department vehicles are also maintained. Halliday says custom work on police vehicles is done at the garage too. Besides materials stored outside, the site also has a stores warehouse. Everything from cement products, traffic cones, pipe, de-icer, grass seed,
paper products, sewer and water fittings, tools, road signs and occupational health and safety supplies are kept inside. The works yard has an electrical shop where workers build traffic control kiosks and control centres for pump stations. There’s also a sand and salt supply area out in the yard. The corporation has another facility in North Delta where sand and salt are stored because most of the snow fighting takes place in North Delta, Halliday explains. Trucks sand, salt and plow roads. “It will be snowing up there, or colder up there, long before it’s colder down here. It’s really advantageous for us for the trucks to be able to fill up WILLIS closer to where they’re working than drive all the way back here to get filled up.” Portable power generators are also stored at the yard. There are around 160 full-time employees at the works yard with 50 to 60 temporary workers coming in during the summer. Around 85 per cent of the workers will report to the works yard in the morning and get dispatched. Halliday notes there are some, specifically the capital construction crew, that work on watermains, sewermains, drainage and infrastructure renewal projects that report directly to the job site they’re working on at the time. Most of the equipment returns to the yard at night, he notes, while there will be a few pieces that are left out in the field in secure locations.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW Maybe we’re on to something here. When it was decided to put the idea of raising the sales tax to fund transit improvements to a mail-in referendum, I must admit I didn’t have particularly high hopes for the undertaking. It was certainly a democratic way of determining how to proceed on an issue that demands attention, but given the deplorable voter turnout in recent civic elections, it seemed like it could be a lot of work for very little return. Special interests on both sides of the equation would undoubtedly cast a ballot, but would it get a buy-in from the average voter, the one that hasn’t managed to find 15 minutes to spare on a Saturday in November every third year? Fresh off a municipal election that saw voter turnout jump in some jurisdictions, but still hover around the 33 per cent mark province-wide, I was dubious the referendum would even come close to that incredibly low bar. I am pleasantly surprised to report it’s already surpassed that figure. As of Wednesday, with just over two weeks left to get ballots in, almost 40 per cent of the 1.5 million packages mailed out had been processed by Elections BC. What I find even more surprising is that the turnout has been decent across the region. You’d think those areas that stand to gain the most from proposed transit improvements would see higher numbers, but the return rate has been pretty consistent throughout the Lower Mainland. Ironically, Surrey, which is one of those places that would derive the most benefit from a “yes” vote, trails everywhere else in terms of turnout. Registered voters in Delta, incidentally, have already returned 41 per cent of ballots, which is well above the 32 per cent voter turnout here in last November’s municipal election. Why are we seeing a better buy-in for the referendum than we typically get with local elections? Is it because voters desperately want to see long-overdue improvements to Greater Vancouver’s transit network? Or maybe they’re returning those ballots because they can’t stand the thought of seeing the provincial sales tax rise by half a point to fund TransLink initiatives? Then again, maybe the ability to fill out a ballot on your time, in your own home, and then have more than two months in which to return it, is playing a part in a turnout that will likely be double digits higher than the traditional method. If that’s the case, then it seems like it would be worth exploring that option a little further.
Different approaches taken to cutting our carbon footprint IAN ROBERTSON
COMMUNITY COMMENT “If the fossil fuel industry is allowed to proceed with its current plans (2009) greenhouse gas emissions in Canada will grow in 2010 to 44 per cent beyond what Canada is permitted under the Kyoto protocol.” There seems to be some consensus that we all need to create less carbon dioxide if we are to allow our descendants to enjoy this planet. Politicians may disagree, and you and I may wonder what it’s all about. Let me try to explain some efforts that are being made. B.C. is a leader in the effort to reduce greenhouse gases. It set out a law and goal in 2007 to reduce our emissions by one-third by 2020. We are on track! The B.C. version is called “carbon tax” and is hailed internationally as being efficient. Our system is to tax carbon dioxide fuels such as gasoline at 6.27cents per litre, natural gas at 5.7 cents per cubic metre, propane at 4.62 cents per litre and so on. B.C.’s approach is that the program
is revenue neutral, meaning those with low incomes, for example, are now receiving some compensation — like the GST refund. The B.C. system requires an annual report to the legislature. In principle, the end user of energy is paying a tax for creating carbon dioxide. The rates can and will go up over time as B.C. aims to reduce by 33 per cent by 2020 and by 80 per cent by 2050. Recently Ontario and Quebec announced they are on the same issue, but with a “Cap and Trade” scheme. Under that system, a polluter will be told their allowable carbon emissions are capped and will over time be reduced. They either live within the cap or go to some other entity that has surplus within their cap, and trade or buy the extra they need. It’s too early to know details such as what and how the caps will be set, who will arbitrate the fair prices for an exchange, how will the proceeds — if any — be distributed and who will be exempted from the cap. Efforts in Saskatchewan and Alberta seem to be directed to capture the CO2 that comes from oil and gas and livestock by sequestrating — where the gas is pumped into underground reservoirs to be stored there indefinitely. In Ottawa, our federal folks are issuing edicts that provinces have to submit carbon reduction

goals to Ottawa so they can go to a Paris conference and finally tell the world that we are beginning to conform to the requirement that we first made back in 1992 at Kyoto. Space does not permit an explanation or commentary on the federal position. A major challenge in all of this is the energy industry in Alberta, which in total creates about onethird of all carbon dioxide emissions in Canada. So far Prime Minister Stephen Harper has insisted on exempting it from any limits. It remains to be seen what will happen now — with the price of oil way down and the election in Alberta last week. It’s too soon to predict how the new Alberta government will respond, but indications are it will take this matter seriously. Meanwhile, back at the ranch — literally — some foreign companies have been buying up ALR land in northern B.C. to plant trees. This aids them to claim carbon credits — trees absorb carbon dioxide. Farmers are finding grazing and hay land is becoming scarce and/or expensive. Stay tuned... Hodgins family gift integral to hospice capital project
Editor Re: Letter critical of Hodgins in poor taste, letter to the editor, May 6 I am writing to correct the comment that pertains to the donation of the Hodgins family to the Irene Thomas Hospice. The hospice was supported financially by a substantial gift from the Thomas family in memory and honour of their mother, Irene Thomas. The Irene Thomas Hospice is a 10-suite residence that provides 24/7 medical care for people in the last months, weeks or days of life. The significant donation
from the Hodgins family enabled the second phase of the capital project to go ahead, and was gifted in memory and honour of Harold and Veronica Savage, the grandparents of Sean Hodgins. The Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Nancy Supportive Care is integral to care for families prior to needing hospice care or when caring for a loved one at home. Patients and families have access to informa-
tion, resources, counselling, complementary therapies, day support programs and grief support following a death. The leadership gifts from these two families in the Delta Hospice Society’s capital campaign demonstrated Macey tremendous generosity and vision towards creating an important legacy for our community. Dumping grass clippings in slough isn’t only bad for the environment, it’s illegal
Editor: We are very fortunate to live on Paton Drive backing on to Crescent Slough. This waterway is home to a multitude of fish, animals, plants and birds, including herons, a pair of Canada geese, nesting wood ducks and bald eagles, to name but a few. The slough offers a tranquil refuge not only for residents but for oth-
ers who enjoy paddling or rowing its length from River Road to Highway 17 A and beyond. Lately, however, someone is dumping their grass cuttings into the slough, creating an unsightly mess as the clippings drift in clumps down the slough. When grass clippings are introduced into a waterway and begin to break down, it results

LIFE IS SHORT
Continued push has resulted in meeting to discuss hospital with health minister Editor: Thank you for your coverage and comments regarding the shortfalls at Delta Hospital. Along with your voice, the community, MLA Vicki Huntington, the mayor and council of the Corporation of Delta, the chief and executive council of Tsawwassen First Nation, a meeting with Minister of Health Terry Lake and MLA Scott Hamilton was
accomplished. Although the Corporation of Delta is but a child of the province and has no jurisdiction or voice in deciding whether provincial operational funding can be made available to cover the shortfalls at Delta Hospital, it has the right to speak on behalf of its electorate and should be listened to regardless. One must remember the Tsawwassen First Nation is
a nation unto itself and has spoken in support of needs expressed by the doctors at Delta Hospital. We need not continue to debate this issue for political reasons or who might get credit for accomplishing a standard of health services that is required to save lives and prevent long-term injuries or illness. Just do what is right and do it now. Douglas George Massey

KRPI has plans to locate a directional array of five 12-storey antennas at Tyee Drive and McKenzie Way right as you enter Point Roberts and only 330 metres from Tsawwassen’s southern border. The fight to stop the invasion of these 50,000-watt radio towers is not over. While the antennas would destroy five acres of woods and be truly ugly, the bigger problems involve: 1. Electromagnetic blanketing interference on your electronic devices that cannot be effectively mitigated. The Federal Communications Commission does not require broadcasters to fix phones (landlines, cell and cordless), computers, speakers of all kinds, hearing aids, baby monitors, etc. because they cannot be fixed. For details go to: fcc.gov/guides/public-andbroadcasting-july-2008 and read “Blanketing Interference.” 2. The KRPI 1550 AM antennas would produce 50,000 watts of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) 24/7 that moves as both sky and ground waves along the
ground near the speed of light, penetrating our homes, businesses and bodies. Many folks worry about the .5 watts of EMR from a cell phone and the 100 watts that emanate from a single cell dish. But what about the elephant in the room with 50,000 watts of EMR coming from AM radio transmission antennas? KinVillage in Tsawwassen recently donated more than 30 good quality used mattresses to Rotary World Help. The mattresses, which would have otherwise gone to the landfill, are now headed to the Philippines. John Lusted, recreation director at KinVillage, who is also a member of the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, said he mentioned the surplus mattresses to fellow club member Mary Watson and the donation was quickly organized. Here, Cynthia Langenberg, health services director at KinVillage, along with Bill Hennen and George Sandwith from Rotary World Help, load the mattresses onto a truck.

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking?
Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.
The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation!
Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation. Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.
New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being
spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

Summit helping to change attitudes on mental health
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Southpointe Academy hosted the inaugural Mini Balancing Our Minds: Youth Summit last month.
Over 250 students from independent schools across the Lower Mainland descended on Southpointe Academy for the inaugural Mini Balancing Our Minds: Youth Summit 2015 last month. The summit at the Tsawwassen school saw students participate in the process of rethinking society’s approach to mental health issues. Following a blessing
from Tsawwassen First Nation elder Ruth Adams, Grade 8 to 12 students received presentations from a number of professionals, heard personal accounts from student presenters and participated in a panel discussion of teens articulating the actions they are taking to promote mental health awareness. The day included breakout sessions for teens where students had the opportunity to collaborate with one another. They also had a chance to visit a number of resource information booths hosted by mental health support and promotional organizations. After attending the Balancing Our Minds Summit for the past two
years at Rogers Arena, Southpointe Academy students were eager to contribute to a growing conversation about mental health and the issues faced by many of their peers on a daily basis. The summit reflected their amenability to initiate change in South Delta and the Lower Mainland by rebranding the face of mental health, both personally and amongst peers from Southpointe Academy and other schools. Southpointe Academy Grade 12 student Aliyya Rashid believes they are well on their way towards creating a community that is a comfortable place for youth, where tolerance for mental health issues is encouraged.

Dancing for a friend
Flamenco show at Tsaw. Arts Centre honours late student A promise made is a promise kept. That is the simple yet powerful theme of this year’s flamenco show presented by Los Gitanos Spanish School of Dance. It will run from May 22 to 24 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. A year ago, long-time flamenco dance student, music lover and Port Metro Vancouver high-ranking executive Sheri Plewes lost her battle with cancer. Prior to her death she made two requests to Bev Mantovani, owner, dance teacher and choreographer of Los Gitanos. “She asked me to dance at her funeral service and she asked me to present an award to one of my students in her memory,” explains Mantovani. “I completed the first request and it was one of the most difficult things I have ever done, but at the same time one of the most heartfelt and significant in my career.” The second request is coming to fruition during this year’s performance, which has been titled Promesa, to fulfill what was promised to a dear friend. “This show will be presented in two segments. The first one is a traditional flamenco fiesta with live musicians and singers. The second one features a magnificent piece of music
by Spanish virtuoso guitarist Vicente Amigo. This instrumental composition is incredibly moving and inspirational and provides the perfect frame to honour Sheri’s memory.” The Los Gitanos group consists of about 30 students ranging from six to over 75 years of age, from beginners to advanced, from all walks and stages in life.
“Flamenco celebrates the individual, their emotions, their inner passion and fears, their joy and their accomplishments. ” Bev Mantovani
“Flamenco celebrates the individual, their emotions, their inner passion and fears, their joy and their accomplishments. It shows their discipline, their determination and ultimately their love of dance,” says Mantovani. “Sheri’s daughter Sarah started coming to the studio as a toddler watching her mom dance. She is now 20-years-old and will be performing a solo for her mom, which is absolutely special to all of us.” Mario Sorta, featured this year, is a multi-instrumentalist and multi-talented musician, singer and song-
writer born in Mexico. In Vancouver since 2010, he has influenced the local artist community infusing energy, passion and innovation in all areas of music. “Mario is not only a wonderful flamenco singer who regularly performs at Kino Cafe but he has also started the Mexican Music School in Canada to preserve the folklore of his native country,” says Mantovani. “I am so happy to have him once again in Tsawwassen so our local audience can enjoy and appreciate his talent.” Other partners in this performance include local musician and percussionist Dave McIlory. “You would think Dave was born playing the cajon, this special box-shaped percussion instrument originally from Peru. He has such an incredible sense of rhythm and deep understanding of music,” says Mantovani. Peter Mole, a wellknown Spanish guitarist and long time associate of Los Gitanos, is returning to perform. “I cannot imagine doing a show without him,” says Mantovani. “He is the best in the business. His knowledge, years of experience and love of this genre are a gift to our audience who sometimes are not very familiar with this art form.” The annual performance

Music of Buddy Holly and Beatles at Genesis
Genesis Theatre will be rockin’ next Thursday. That’s when Zachary Stevenson will be performing as Buddy Holly and the Fab Fourever, a Beatles tribute band, will hit the stage at a concert presented by the Original Legends of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Stevenson, an actor, singer and songwriter, has reprised the role in numerous productions of the Buddy Holly Story across Canada. The Fab Fourever’s web-
site notes their musical production transports the audience back to the 1960s, a time when the music was a soundtrack to a generation. There will be an additional performance by rock ‘n’ roll diva Molly Dee. The concert is set for Thursday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Tickets are $39.75. Renowned painter heading to town Artists guild presenting workshop with England’s Gary Long BY
NOREEN FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor
Thanks to a happy mix of events, the South Delta Artists Guild is presenting an outstanding two-day figure drawing and painting workshop next month in its studio at Gallery 1710. Set for June 10 and 11, the workshop will be led by world-renowned English artist Gary Long, a figurative artist and university instructor now living and working in Cornwall (birthplace of the Ladner brothers) who also loves to paint his impressions of coast, sea, sky and weather. Working with a professional model, he will lead artists through the fundamentals of interpreting the nude on paper or canvas, with individual instruction and interactive comment as the work proceeds. Long attended Birmingham College of Art, then basically started his career by working for two years as an illustrator in Vancouver, where he met and married Pat, from White Rock. They moved back to England where Long attended the Manchester College of Art, after which time his career took off, particularly in the field of illustration. He worked with Saatchi and Saatchi, one of the largest and most successful advertis-
ing agencies in the world, freelanced with famous authors such as American Judy Blume, and with many national and international companies. He was commissioned to paint six pictures for the luxury liner Queen Mary II in 2002, and he is an elected member of the Society of Illustrators in New York. Long combines producing work for several exhibitions annually with an active career as part-time lecturer at the University College Falmouth, and he also runs art courses at the St. Ives School of Painting, and in Italy. Workshop coordinator Coral Gurney first heard about Long a few years ago from a new neighbour, a cousin of the artist. As she learned more about the artist, and found that he and Pat had scheduled a visit this summer, things clicked, and he was invited to consider leading a guild workshop, which is now open for registration. Figure Drawing and Painting with Gary Long – Oil, Acrylic or Watercolour runs Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost (including professional model) is $230 ($225 for members). Registration deadline is June 9. Full details can be found at https://artistquarter.com/sdag/courses/view/id/1747. Gurney can be reached at 604 943-5429.

Cara Thien (centre) with clients Saraya Hickey (left) and Maureen Wright.
Training every level Tsawwassen trainer and fitness guru Cara Thien has had a successful career as a fitness athlete and model, and she is now passing on her experience to the next generation. One of her protégées, 24-year-old Saraya Hickey, is heading to Fort St. John tomorrow for her first figure competition at the B.C. Amateur BodyBuilding Association’s Northern Classic. Hickey, who also works in the fitness industry and has played sports most of her life, came to Thien three months ago after deciding she wanted to take things to another level. “She has a lot of
knowledge,” Hickey said. “Whenever I’d just have that time with her I’d just pick her brain.” To get in competition shape, the Tsawwassen resident has been following a strict nutrition regime and working out two hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to training and nutrition, Thien has taught Hickey the fine art of posing on stage, as well as walking in five-inch heels, something that did not come naturally, she said with a smile. Thien, who owns VO2 Fusion Health and Performance in Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, also recently started sponsor-
ing Patrick Thornhill, who plays for the Delta Islanders Junior “A” lacrosse team. Thien’s clientele isn’t just limited to elite athletes. Tsawwassen mom Maureen Wright started training with VO2 Fusion about two years ago. She said she found herself feeling tired a lot and decided she needed to do something about it. Since beginning training with Thien and following her nutrition plan, Wright said she’s lost a significant amount of weight, has increased her strength and has a newfound energy. She is also now pain-free after five years of nagging shoulder pain following an injury.

Finding stillness through meditation p.j. wren
Well on Your Way First, a disclaimer: I am not a guru of enlightenment. I cannot speak in that super-cool cryptic language that yogis speak in. You know the people I’m talking about. The ones that always have the right quote up their sleeve, but with just enough mystery that it leaves you scratching your head a bit. I am also not a regular participant in the fine art of meditation. Instead, what I am is a personal trainer who loves constant change and movement, but recognizes that I have monkey brain (a mind that jumps from thought to thought like a monkey jumps from tree to tree), and I need to learn how to be still and slow down these monkey thoughts. I am not alone in my quest to stillness either. In the last 40 years, meditation has entered the mainstream big time, with the practice exploding worldwide in the last five years. (Just Google “meditation.” At time of writing, I got 135,000,000 hits.) Why is meditation so popular? Well, probably because it’s so damn good for you emotionally, spiritually and physically, little grasshopper. Study after study has concluded that regular meditation can reduce stress, help promote a healthier life, slow down aging, increase our happiness and help beat anxiety and depression. So, how can you find stillness in this fast-paced world?
I asked a friend of mine who is way better at this sort of stuff than I am, yoga teacher and owner of Open Space Yoga in Ladner, Michael Rudd. First, I asked Rudd why people have such a hard time sitting still. He replied that he feels people today have a problem with stillness and quietness because we have been hard wired by society to fill every gap in our day. We’re always rushing to the next appointment, person, place and/or experience. His sentiments also popped up from other experts as I researched for this article. Apparently all this rushing around and haste to do things and get things done makes us lose sight of the moment that we are presently in. We never fully, or even slightly for some of us, appreciate what is happening right now. This disconnection with the moment leads to discontent, which eventually leads to unhappiness and anger. Not cool for a healthy, happy life. The good news is, with a little practice, we can all learn to be still and present. Training yourself to meditate is exactly like training for fitness. You have to train on a regular basis, adding small increments of load weekly, and slowly you will start to increase your strength and endurance. In other words, start with 30 seconds of meditation a day and add a minute each week. Soon enough you will be able to build your meditation muscle and quiet your monkey brain. Some tips to help you quiet your monkey brain: First, relax your body. Find somewhere quiet to sit and adjust your posture so you are comfortable. While one thinks of lying down to

relax, mediation isn’t about snoozing or power naps. So, sit and sit tall. (I like to sit on a pillow, cross-legged against a wall.) Second, breathe. The awesome news is if you can breathe, you can meditate. Focus on taking deep breaths all the way into the belly, and then slowly exhaling all the air out of
the lungs. Keep your mind on this breathing pattern. If it wanders, and it will have already a few hundred times by now, just go back to focusing on your breathing again. Third, chant. After focusing on the breath, start repeating a word or a phrase, either out loud or internally — that’s what
I do (I find speaking out loud, by myself a little weird for me). Whichever way you decide to repeat your word or phrase, make it powerful and make it one that connects and resonates with you. And finally, if all else fails, try technology to help you relax. I know, it seems counter intuitive to what

The New York Public Library has a program of live interviews with authors, scientists, artists, philosophers and other thinkers. The host asks each guest to submit a sevenword autobiography that he reads while introducing them. That got me thinking. How would I describe myself in only seven words? What would I want to make sure got said? As I reflected on that I came up with a few. I started out more flippant: “Rider with no horses instead rides bikes.” But the more this idea rattled around in my head, the more I wanted to try to say something truer to my heart: “Trying to follow Jesus better every day.” I also thought of: “Learning, loving, serving, proclaiming — giving God glory.”

What I found was that trying to distill my essence, values and ambitions down to seven words made me think more deeply about who I want to be and what I want to accomplish. It focused my thinking. John 9 describes a miracle Jesus did that caused an uproar among the religious leaders. When questioned, the man who was healed gave a seven-word autobiography that is profound in its simplicity: “I was blind but now I see!” (v.25). How would you describe yourself in seven words? What are the hopes, fears, priorities and values that help sum up your life? I challenge you to try this exercise. It may not be easy, but you will be glad you did. Huntington introduces bill to safeguard property owners
Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington introduced legislation last week to protect property owners from what she calls “glaring omissions” in the Builders Lien
Act. “The bill I tabled would ensure that property owners are told when a builder’s lien has been filed against their property by a contrac-
tor or sub-contractor,” said Huntington. “Under current legislation, a lien can be filed against properties without the owner’s knowledge
which can translate into problems down the line,” she added. A lien is a legal claim on personal property as security for a debt. In B.C., the
Builders Lien Act protects contractors and sub-contractors to ensure they are paid for the services they provide to property owners. If a lien is filed on a prop-
erty, it can interfere with the owner’s ability to sell or mortgage it. There is no requirement to notify a property owner when a lien has been filed.

Research has left no doubt that Vitamin D deficiency - which affects 97% of Canadians in winter - is nothing less than a Canadian crisis and world wide problem. Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org) calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiency to be no less than $9 billion annually. A Creighton University study showed that people rich in Vitamin D have up to a 77% lower overall cancer risk. In the Canadian Pediatric Society recommended that pregnant women consult their physicians about getting 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 times the current government recommendations.
The Canadian Cancer Society has called for all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily.
• Dr. Brent Muhlestein. Vit ‘D’ Lower Heart Disease. • Google - Marc Sorenson
The key message the Vitamin D Society wants Canadians to receive is: that we are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency because of our country’s relatively weak sunshine most of the year and the fact that Vitamin D is rare in diet. With thanks to the Vitamin D Society for this info, who incidentally recommends asking your doctor for an annual blood test to check your Vitamin D levels. Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are 50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

Devils earn 14th straight BC berth South Delta senior girls soccer team overcames inexperience line-up to keep impressive streak alive BY

Survive and advance. It’s the theme of the South Delta Sun Devils’ season and it perfectly sums up their unprecedented 14th consecutive trip to the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships. The Tsawwassen school continued its remarkable streak with a 1-0 win in penalty kicks over Princess Margaret on Monday afternoon in a Fraser Valley playoff game filled with all kinds of emotion. The result secured one of six B.C. berths that were up for grabs in the 16-team tournament and sends the Sun Devils to the provincial showcase event — May 28-30 at the University of Victoria. After coming within a game of winning it all a year ago, South Delta was almost starting from scratch — losing seven key starters to graduation or other circumstances. Longtime coaches Stephen Burns and Brent Sweeney inspired their young players by bringing them together to watch ESPN 30-for-30’s Survive and Advance — the documentary on the late Jim Valvano leading underdog North Carolina State to the 1983 NCAA men’s basketball championship. The girls embraced the challenge and overcame a rocky start to the season to navigate the always treacherous Fraser Valley playoffs. “(Stephen) is usually more negative than I am but even I thought at the start of the year it wasn’t looking good for us,” laughed Sweeney. “When we lost 4-1 to Fleetwood in our first exhibition game, we both kind of looked at each other and said we have some work to do.” South Delta locked up second place in league play that included a spirited 2-1 loss to No. 2 ranked Elgin Park. Still, the Valley playoffs were hardly a cakewalk. After a 3-0 opening round win over North Surrey, the girls dropped a tough 2-1 quarter-final

That result put the Sun Devils in a do-or-die scenario the rest of the way. They got past Sardis 1-0, then outlasted a solid Princess Margaret team that was eager to earn its first B.C. berth in recent memory. South Delta lost Vanessa Pecht
to an apparent concussion that required additional medical attention. While paramedics were attending to her, Mia Simpson went down with what was diagnosed as a dislocated knee. Both players were taken to hospital. The remaining girls regrouped and went on to outscore their Surrey
opponent 4-2 in penalty kicks. “There was just so much going on, I didn’t even know where to focus,” said Burns. “Despite their age, our girls kept battling and battling. We couldn’t ask any more from them. It was a great day for them and that’s what this is all about.”

Unbeaten Islanders earn No. 2 ranking in Canada Junior A lacrosse team back in action Sunday in Burnaby with big home-and-home series with Coquitlam Adanacs looming BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
A new wave of incoming talent arrived just in time to help the Delta Islanders continue their best start to the season in franchise history. A pair of victories last weekend over Port Coquitlam and Victoria last weekend not only leaves the Islanders (5-0-0) as the only unbeaten team in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League, they are also ranked No. 2 in the country behind Ontario powerhouse Six Nations. With underage standout Tre Leclaire carry a bulk of the scoring load through four games, the Islanders’ attack received a boost with the arrival of Chase Fraser and Jon Phillips from their U.S. college field lacrosse teams. The pair combined for 17 points in the two wins.
Fraser finshed 18th in league scoring as a rookie last year with 58 points in just 14 games, including 36 goals. After being the top goal scorer at Columbia University, the Aldergrove native seems poised to take his game to another level in the box version of the sport. “Chase has arrived with a new attitude,” said Islanders head coach Greg Rennie. “He had a lot of weight on his shoulders as a rookie and I think it was tough for him to live up to those expectations. He has the ability to be a real game changer for us. Not only is he a goal scorer, he is our best face-off guy which is giving us more possessions. “PoCo really were focused on shutting down Tre but that opened the door for Chase and Jon to come right in and pick up the slack.” Fraser had four goals
against the Saints while Phillips added a pair as Delta outscored the visitors 5-1 in the third period to seal the win. The Islanders also needed a big final 20 minutes in Victoria to produce a huge result. Trailing 8-4 after two periods, Delta scored seven times in the third, including twice in the final 86 seconds to force overtime. The locals went on to win 13-12, outshooting the Shamrocks (3-2-0) by a whopping 75-45 margin. Phillips and Cody Nass’ hat trick goal put the Islanders on even terms. Leclair and Evan Messenger scored in extra time. Messenger was back in the line-up after missing Saturday’s game with an ankle injury. Leclaire and Fraser each finished with seven points, including hat tricks. Shawn Richardson and captain

On day two, the team
regulation which sent the game into overtime. The locals killed off a penalty then carried the play for most of the frame which paid off with the game winning goal coming from Wylder Lappin as time expired to secure a 6-5 win and the 2015 BC May Madness championship. The ’ 06 Jr Giants are
Dylan Heer, Cameron Trolland, Rylan Weisbrod, Will Sharpe, Wylder Lappin, Nicolas Streit, Dayne Nielsen, Evan Barritt, Kai McComb. The coaching staff features Peter Zed (head coach), Cyle Lappin (assistant coach) and Peter Heer (manager/assistant coach).
Brad Hofmann also scored. Delta visits Burnaby (1-4-0) on Sunday night

ing champion Coquitlam (3-1-0) starting May 23 in Ladner.

An open house for the future of GCT Deltaport. Tourney champions 2006 Junior Giants bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Junior Blazers and an 8-0 triumph against the Nanaimo Snipers to move on to the semi-finals. The Junior Giants played a fantastic semi-final game, winning 5-1 against the B.C. Blackhawks to move on to the gold medal game against the Vancouver Warriors, who were undefeated in the tournament. The championship tilt was well-played, with plenty of end-to-end hockey. The teams were tied 5-5 after
having a great spring season having also won a silver medal in the Chilliwack Junior Chiefs Spring Kickoff Tournament in early April. The team will continue to train for the next few weeks and conclude the spring hockey season at the B.C. Spring Classic Tournament June 5-7. Port Metro Vancouver is in the process of a multi-phased expansion called Deltaport Terminal Road & Rail Improvement Project (DTRRIP). GCT Canada LP’s Intermodal Yard Reconfiguration for Deltaport is part of that project. As long-time operators in the area, our goal is to ensure that the Canadian West Coast is prepared to meet future transportation demands with as little impact on the environment and community as possible. Born September 26, 1921 in Kuban Colony, Russia and passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on May 13, 2015 in Ladner, BC.
ARNOLD, Allan G. 1947 - 2015
It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I mourn the passing of my husband and best friend of 45 years. Allan passed away on May 4th with Cynthia by his side. Apart from his beloved border collies, Allan’s lifelong passion was motorcycles. Over a 50 year span, he owned almost every make of bike and toured 3 continents extensively. His motto was “Ride ‘Til You Can’t”. He did just that until he ran out of road much too soon. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to deltahospice.org or arthritisresearch.org Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
Emily is lovingly remembered by her family; Shirley (Elmer) Thiessen, Judy (Vic) Thiessen, Lorna (Gerry) Kent, Dale (Maddaline) Enns, 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Phil and Betty cleared a forest lot and built a home in Delbrook, North Vancouver. Sang bass in St. Catherine’s Church choir. His career in Forestry included: Stewart Research, Canadian Forest Products, General Manager Richmond Plywood & Anil Hardboard NS, S. Manager Zeidler FP Edmonton. In retirement, Phil co-created the Arthritis Society “Golf to Give Hope Project” and raised over $500,000. He passed on to his family his passion for hockey, tennis, singing, figure skating, fishing, canoeing, camping, gardening...and proper English. Phil will be forever remembered as a sensitive man with a big heart, strong moral compass and a deep love of family. Ruth Leonora Harraway (nee Miller) 1919 − 2015 "To everything there is a season "; Ruth’s began April 12, 1919 born to Charles and Clara Miller in London, ON and ended May 4, 2015 in the loving arms of her cherished youngest son, Robbie at Zion Park Manor, Cloverdale, BC. Until Ruth’s marriage in 1946 to Peter Harraway; her life centered in London with summer excursions to Georgian Bay with life−long friends, in particular Holly Gray. Ruth was an excellent student with dreams of becoming a medical doctor; those dreams were crushed by the early death of her father and the Great Depression. Ruth and Peter met at a service man’s dance, married and subsequently moved to White Rock, BC; Peter’s hometown. Ruth’s loyalty to her roots in London remained during her long life in White Rock, Vancouver, Ocean Falls, Richmond, Bowen Island, Tsawwassen and Cloverdale, BC. Ruth was steadfast in her support of Peter’s chosen careers and in particular his avocation for a new car every year or so; to the count of 34. Ruth’s hospitality to all who entered their home was renowned; famously grilling endless cheese sandwiches and baking raisin squares. While a knitter her entire life; Ruth took up painting when living in Tsawwassen, producing beautiful oil and water colours which grace her children’s homes. Ruth was also a cracker−jack bridge player and woe betide her partner making the wrong bid! At 90 Ruth climbed on the back of her son Paul’s motorcycle to go for a ride around the block to the delight of her family. Ruth displayed the utmost grace and stoicism when faced with the emotional, physical and mental impacts of great old age as well as the death of her adored husband in 2013. Left to remember her kindnesses and love are her children Paul (Jody), Pat (Jim), Robbie (Denise) and Phyllis (Henry) and their children and grandchildren. Enjoy your journey Mom; Dad has your rum and coke waiting.

MURAL, Clare Edna (nee Thompson)
Clare Edna Thompson/Mural AKA: Nana was 73 yrs young, when she passed away from Cancer, December 10th 2014 in Cumberland, BC with her daughter Kim Johnston by her side. Clare Thompson was Born May 13 1943, In Lachine Quebec to David and Edna; she attended Lachine High where she met her husband to be William Mural. They married and had 3 wonderful Children. Their Family moved to BC shortly after their children were born to settle down. Clare was an adventurous free spirit who danced to the oldies like nobody’s business, played the guitar and sung to her children by the fireplace. I fondly remember when she used to drive her Datsun B510 as fast as it would go over the railroad tracks in Richmond with her 3 kids screaming faster in order to see how much air we could get, but always ensured there were family dinners nightly and weekend events. She could always be found at the beach in tsawwassen getting her tan on with her ever so popular Ban De Soliel, and I quote” it will turn into a tan by tomorrow”. She loved Curling and going to bon spiels as well as golf, but worked very hard as a receptionist for Dr. Teasdale for many years in Richmond. Clare is survived by her 3 Children, Dean Mural (Natasha), Kim Johnston and Jude Mural (Tasha), as well 8 loving grand children, Taylor, Casey, Billie Johnston, Marley, Levy, Wyatt, Pipa Mural and Leighton Mural. A Celebration of Clare’s life will take place July 11th 2015 at Centennial Beach in Tsawwassen. Starting at 10 am and running throughout the evening. We will be having a day at the beach” in loving memory” of Clare. Please bring your families’ blankets and Stories. We will be having a BBQ and music in a park setting. TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
