Calling it a career after 43 years Having treated generations of Delta patients, Dr. Ken Lai is finally retiring from his family practice in Ladner BY

It’s been a wonderful career for a long-time Ladner doctor who is retiring after more than four decades in family practice. Dr. Ken Lai, who is hanging up his stethoscope today, says he feels fortunate to have worked in the community since the early 1970s. “The good thing about working in this town is you know the people,” Lai, 72, told the Optimist. “Your patients became your friends. For me, I’ve been treating four generations of residents.” Lai, who opened his practice in August of 1972 and has worked at the same location on 47A Avenue for the past quarter-century, has seen quite a few changes over that time. Like many general practitioners, he used to deliver babies, now a specialty that most family doctors don’t undertake. He says it’s special to have so many adult patients he saw as children, who now bring their own children to his office. Many have moved elsewhere but still come to Ladner Village to see him. See DR. LAI page 3

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau speaks on Annacis Island yesterday.

Trudeau made that pledge yesterday during a visit to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters British Columbia Training Centre on Annacis Island. Following a tour of the Delta facility, Trudeau made a speech critical of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s tax breaks for the wealthy, a message the Liberals

no doubt will be repeating in this fall’s general election campaign. Trudeau outlined his “plan for fairness” that includes a $3 billion tax cut for the middle class. SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS & VIDEO

Every effort will be made to save another Ladner heritage home from the wrecking ball, says Coun. Jeannie Kanakos. The chair of the Delta Heritage Advisory Commission had that promise following Delta council’s decision this week to go along with a commission recommendation to impose a 60-day temporary protection order for the Gillespie House at 4964-47A Ave. The municipality received a rezoning application for a four-lot singlefamily subdivision, which includes coach houses, where the Victorian cottagestyle house is located. The applicant hasn’t applied for a demolition permit yet, but the application indicates the heritage house would be removed. The house is on Delta’s Heritage Inventory, but not on the Heritage Register, which provides greater protection. Constructed in 1901 for

DR. LAI from page 1 A highly respected physician in the area, Lai hasn’t been afraid to speak his mind on issues he believes impacts the quality of medical care for residents, including voicing his displeasure a couple of years ago at Fraser Health when it came to the length of time his patients had to wait for tests results from Delta Hospital. Lai, however, is also a big supporter of the hospital, recalling how difficult it was for the community to get one built and how the facility continues to face controversy despite strong resident support. He was acknowledged at a recent Friends of Delta

Hospital town hall meeting, where several pointed out his support and how his upcoming retirement adds further challenges for locals that can’t find a family physician. It was noted at that meeting that more family doctors would be encouraged to set up shop here if Delta Hospital had fully functioning services, something to which Lai says he wholeheartedly agrees. “The young doctors, they train to work in hospitals as well. They feel they need support and if you had good service in Delta Hospital, then they would not feel lost. You need a hospital to attract a GP, there’s no

The fifth and final person convicted in the 2007 murder of a Tsawwassen man in California has been sentenced to death. Robert Lee Dunson was the last of five suspects to be tried in the murder of well-known Tsawwassen businessman Bill Dobbs. Dunson was found guilty in March of first-degree murder in the slaying in Indio, California, where Dobbs and his common-law wife, Toni Dawson, had just purchased a vacation home. Because the murder occurred during a robbery, Dunson qualified for the death penalty. Death penalty sentences are subject to an automatic

appeal. In 2012, Dunson’s four co-accused — Jackie Lynn Dunson (Robert Dunson’s sister), Fernando Antonio Benavidez, Ronald Wesley Handwerk and Rogelio

Leon Zuniga — were all convicted and sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole. Dobbs, 48, and Dawson were vacationing in the area when he was murdered. He was last seen alive leaving the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino with another man, later identified as Benavidez, at around 3:45 a.m. on Nov. 26, 2007. A passing motorist found his body on the side of an Indio road the next day. The avid golfer was a long-time member of the Beach Grove Golf Club. He had two grown children and a grandson. Dobbs had a family-owned janitorial company.

Police issue warning as thieves target all kinds of vehicles to steal batteries

Delta police are warning the public after a recent increase in vehicle battery thefts. The department had sent out previous warnings about thefts of batteries from commercial vehicles, however, as residents start taking advantage of nicer weather, thieves are now also targeting boats, trailers and other recreational vehicles. “Thieves steal the batteries for their lead and metal content as they can fetch between $10 and $30 per battery at recycling businesses,” said Sgt. Sarah Swallow. “Currently, there are not the same identification requirements for those recycling batteries as there are when recycling scrap

metal.” Batteries do not usually come with a serial number or identifying mark, making it difficult for police to identify them as stolen. “While the batteries can be seized, criminal charges and the return of stolen property to its rightful owner can be difficult,” Swallow said. The department has a number of tips to help residents protect their property: • Mark or engrave batteries with your name or an identifying number. That way, when police recover the batteries they can be easily identified as being stolen and they can be returned to the rightful owner. • Remove batteries from equipment at night. While

time consuming in the moment, the financial cost of replacing stolen batteries often impacts you much further beyond the replacement cost of the battery itself. • If your house has an alarm, use it. While alarms never completely deter thieves, they can shorten the time in which a thief is at your house and prevent loss. They can make your house a less attractive target. • Secure equipment in such a way the battery compartments are not easily accessible or are locked. • Install good lighting on sensors. Thieves love darkness and lights on sensors will make the thief or suspicious behaviour easier to spot.

Police get a variety of explanations for fight The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • May 18, 1 a.m., 5500block of 15B Street: Police responded to a report of a fight between seven people. Several males were found in the area and provided many different versions of events. Apparently one of the participants was given $20 to purchase alcohol but did not follow through. No indication of a physical fight or any injuries. All parties sent on their way except one male who was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Ladner • May 18, 7:30 a.m., 3000-block of Deltaport Way: Police stopped a vehicle that was observed driving erratically. A strong smell of marijuana was immediately noticed coming from the breath of the driver, who admitted to smoking a joint while driv-

ing to work. The driver issued a 24-hour roadside suspension and several violation tickets as a result of his driving behaviour. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was picked up by a friend. • May 19, 3:46 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A: Complainant reported a piece of wood was thrown from the overpass and hit her vehicle, causing damage to the right front fender, mirror and front door. Police attended but neither the wood or broken pieces of mirror were located on the roadway. The complainant had observed several youth near the overpass but a patrol of the area by police proved negative. • May 22, 2:58 a.m., 4800-block of Delta Street: A men’s single folding black wallet was found in the area. The wallet contains several banking and membership cards. The owner can claim on identification at police headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Way, Ladner. • May 22, 2 p.m.: An unknown male entered the restaurant through the open rear door. He then entered the employee area, stealing a wallet from pants hanging on the wall before fleeing the scene. All cards in

the wallet cancelled and a still photo from the video surveillance distributed for identification. • May 23, 8:33 p.m., Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road: Police stopped a vehicle with inactive insurance. The driver was also unable to produce a valid driver’s licence and acknowledged that he had neither insurance nor driver’s licence. The driver was issued tickets for various infractions and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. • May 23, 10:26 p.m., 4600-block of 51st Street: Complainant reported a large group of youth hanging around the park at the secondary school. Police attended and found several youth remaining from the May Days celebration. The youth scattered on police arrival. • May 25, 2:20 a.m., 4700-block of 48B Street: Complainant reported a vanity and lawnmower stolen from his residence. Both items stored in open areas easily accessible to the thief. A silver vehicle with a lawnmower in the back was observed by witnesses leaving the area but no licence plate was obtained. Area patrol by police proved negative.

Delta Hospital facilities maintenance and operations supervisor/chief engineer Ryan Vidulich shows the Optimist around the hospital’s main electrical vault.

Delta Hospital’s maintenance team ensures complex infrastructure keeps running This is the third installment of Off Limits, a series in which Optimist reporter Dave Willis goes where the public isn’t able to tread. He’ll provide a behind-the-scenes look at various operations in the community over the coming weeks. But in these cases, the check-ups are on items like air handling units, pumps, wheelchairs, ceiling lifts and beds, he says, noting basically everything you see in the hospital goes through their hands. The hospital is powered by four 600-volt lines that come in off the power wall to a kiosk and then into a transformer, explains Vidulich as a constant hum fills the air. In the case of a power outage, a WILLIS transfer switch sees the outage and generators fire up to take over, however Vidulich says the hospital is on a good grid. Andy Emes, the maintenance and operations manager at Delta and Peace Arch hospitals, says the hospital is governed by CSA standards as well as building and fire codes. He notes a lot of annual testing is carried out, listing sprinklers, alarms and generators as a few examples. For the hospital’s generators, on top of an

embers of the maintenance team at Delta Hospital took the Optimist behind the scenes for a glimpse at the infrastructure that keeps the busy Ladner facility running. Beyond the hustle and bustle of hallways lies a complex collection of equipment, pipes, cables, panels and switches that make up the building’s electrical, water and air systems. BY DAVE Every piece of equipment in the hospital has an asset tag, says facilities maintenance and operations chief engineer/supervisor Ryan Vidulich. Clerks enter that information into the system and every week it generates preventative maintenance measures on which pieces of equipment need to be checked, he explains. Another part of the program is maintenance requisitions, says Emes, noting anyone can put in a requisition if they have a problem. There really isn’t a typical day for members of the maintenance team, Vidulich adds. Their attention could be on fixing a temperature problem, or plumbing or a bed. “We get calls on everything,” he says. TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It’s about time political gatherings weren’t treated like second-class functions by the good folks over at municipal hall. For a while now there have been two categories of events — political and nonpolitical — when it comes to using civic facilities, a designation that has created a fair bit of unrest among those that enjoy taking part in the democratic process. For a number of years the regulations seemed rather arbitrary. I found a column I wrote back in 2007 about how a town hall meeting to discuss port and highway development, a gathering that featured representatives from all three levels of government, was allowed to be held at a civic venue, but a plebiscite organized by a fisheries group to give the public a say on the Tsawwassen First Nation treaty wasn’t welcome on municipal property. Whether an event was deemed political in nature was most definitely open to interpretation. A policy adopted three years ago permitted political uses, but limited them to a half-dozen venues so they wouldn’t interfere with other facility uses. I’m not sure why an all-candidates meeting or a town hall forum is so intrusive that it must be segregated, but thankfully Sylvia Bishop’s motion approved by her council colleagues earlier this month has put an end to such a practice. As Bishop stated, these are tax-paying citizens taking part in the democratic process in their own community, so their use of municipal facilities shouldn’t be limited as long as they comply with all other conditions. The previous policy never made a lot of sense to me given a public hearing, particularly one on something as contentious as a development proposal for the Southlands, is every bit as political as constituency association meeting, yet only one faced civic limitations on where it could be held. I don’t doubt that municipal hall has heard complaints about political functions in the past, but I suspect many of those were based on the inconvenience they caused other facility users, and weren’t necessarily opposed to the type of gathering. Or maybe some people just didn’t like the stripe of the event in question and decided to voice their displeasure at it being able to use a municipal venue. Whatever the case, political gatherings are a function of democracy so it stands to reason they should be permitted in public facilities that we have all paid to build and maintain. There’s no reason why they should be treated any differently.

COMMUNITY COMMENT Having lived under the tutelage of a mother whose profession as a teacher\principal\librarian left little doubt sister Pat and I would be immersed in books. Starting at a young age as members of the Ladner Library, many books and novels have adorned our respective shelves. I have always had an interest and voraciously reviewed European, American and Canadian history. Thanks to my mother’s influence, I have recently opened several novels on Canadian history, Peter C. Newman and others, including a fascinating history of the Hudson’s Bay Company. I should say reopened, as I was gifted some of these books 25 to 30 years ago. Now reaching an age of retirement and planning a trip in some form across Canada and into the heartland of America, I thought it would be prudent to reprise this historical material to better enjoy the benefits of travel. This latest history bent started

after writing about Delta’s settlement history and our high profile settlers that have contributed to our rather unique lifestyle. We are a country of cultural diversity over the past 500 years and longer. Our Canadian history ranges from the first contact by explorers and native people to the seven-year war between the British and French forces to the settlement of the Western Canadian territories and provinces. Our first settlers included the French, English, Scots and Irish, all seeking ownership of land and a better life. There is no greater influence in Canada’s modern history than the Hudson’s Bay Company and its 250 outposts, which helped colonize Canada’s north from the late 1600s, and the influence of the Canadian Pacific Railway in consolidating our western provinces, thus forming the confederation of Canada’s provinces. Sir Donald Alexander Smith, also known as Lord Strathcona amongst other titles, drove the last spike connecting east and west, reducing travel time across our broad land from a seasonal best of several months to mere days by railcar in 1885. The H.B.C. outposts were manned almost exclusively by Scots and English factors, in turn reporting to British governors in

London, England. In brief summary, Smith started his career as an apprentice clerk and a little known fur trading factor in Labrador to Canadian commissioner and, for 25 years, as H.B.C.’s London-based governor. Smith’s fascinating career spanned 75 years with H.B.C. He is given credit in quelling the Riel Rebellion, which assisted in the peaceful opening of the Canadian West. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Northwest Mounted Police in 1873, providing security and safety for settlers and native tribes from hostile American forays and domestic issues. Smith entered federal politics and befriended four Canadian prime ministers. Smith spent 42 years as a director of the Bank of Montreal, 17 years as president. He was appointed as Canada’s high commissioner to Great Britain for 18 years and became a favourite of British Royals. He died in his 94th year on the eve of the First World War. Smith was one of Canada’s wealthiest and most influential citizens. Searching personal history can become a fascinating avocation. And a good night to you, Pat. Patience needed in construction zone Editor: I drive the speed limit posted on Highway 17. I also drive the posted construction zone speeds while changes are being made to widen and add turning lanes to accommodate the new mall traffic. I seem to be one of few who do. I travel this highway twice or more every day of the week. I am tired of being one of the very few who follow the posted speed signs. Right now, leaving 56th

speeding through, but this is much worse. These divers are impatient and angry. These speed limits are posted for our safety while the highway is being altered and for the safety of the many construction personnel that are working in this area. Tailgating me is not safe, pulling around me quickly and cutting in tight in front of me is not safe, pulling out angrily and cutting off someone in the fast lane is not safe either.

Street and Highway 17, the posted speed is 60 km/h, changing to 80 km/h at the end of the construction zone just before the exit ramp to Highway 17A. Every day, I am tailgated, honked at, angrily passed and even cut off by those who want to drive above this posted limit. Not just a little above, but some are very close to double the posted speed. We have always had a problem with people running for the ferry and

Why are you so mad I’m adhering to the speed limits? I stay in the right lane, I speed up when the new speeds are posted. Why are you angry with me? It’s not just people rushing for the ferry, it’s people in our own community who seem to feel they are entitled and above the law. Reading this will not change how they drive, but a few pricey speeding tickets just might. Come on highway patrol! Joanne Goss

clear: too many people. Why do we have so many people? Because developers keep building more and more housing units. “Build it and they will come” is something I have heard quite often, and it seems to be true. We have something called a development cost charge that developers need to pay when they develop a piece of land. This charge

Townhouse plan goes before public BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

A revised proposal to build a townhouse complex in Ladner Village is still drawing opposition from area residents. A public hearing was held Tuesday at municipal hall for the plan to consolidate four properties at the corner of 47A Avenue and 48B Street to construct a 23-unit townhouse complex. The three-storey townhouses are a significant departure from an earlier proposal for a 47-unit

condo development that drew the ire of close to 200 residents at a community meeting last summer. Most of the roughly halfdozen speakers at Tuesday’s hearing voiced opposition to the application, reiterating concerns about density and height. Jennifer Thoss noted the latest version is still too dense and ambitious, adding Delta council needs a more critical eye when considering such applications. Another resident pointed out parking concerns as well as the precedent the

development would set. One supporter said he was disappointed to hear the negativity, saying the applicant has been given nothing but trouble in trying to come up with a more affordable housing alternative for seniors and young people. A later speaker, however, questioned the affordability argument. The initial proposal by the Skov family was revised by the time a formal application was submitted to Delta. This spring, council had a number of concerns

about the redesigned proposal, including the need for it to be more in keeping with the village’s historic theme. Noting it’s been a “long and winding road” to get to where they are, architect Peter Dandyk pointed out to council the “very substantial changes” that have been made since the redevelopment was initially proposed, including how the new design reflects the heritage feel of the community. A decision on the application will be made at the next council meeting.

Pentecostal fire We are all Pentecostals on this Feast Day when we celebrate the wondrous acts of God in bringing a new community to birth, later to be called “The Way” and then simply “gathering of people” or church. There were tongues of fire, a mighty wind and people being able to understand over 15 people groups declaring God’s mighty works in their own tongues. This speaks to me of both unity and disruption. The only way that churches can “maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3) is by the first four words, “make every effort to.” Like a fruitful garden, there is effort that needs to be expressed,

along with God’s miraculous generative powers of Creation. So, too, with our community. Come Holy Spirit! When I was camping, a gust of wind came out of nowhere and blew everything off the picnic table. Wind can be disruptive! Effort was made to gather things and put them back into order. Trash had to be chased and plucked from bushes. May God’s Holy Spirit bring unity and healing in our community, and disrupt everything that would block that, so that we might faithfully declare God’s mighty works in our community. See Acts, Chapter 2 for this wonderful story.

Kids learn while they play at Sylvan summer camps

Sylvan Learning in Tsawwassen has camps to keep kids busy, and learning, over the summer. There are two programs that focus on STEM skills (science, technology, engineering and math) in the form of robotics and coding/game design camps. Kids will get to use Lego in the robotics camp (grades 2 to 6) to build various robots, from animals to Ferris wheels and bridges, and then connect them to a computer and use different coding programs to animate them. “It lets them be hands on, interacting with different robots and kind of sneakily getting them to learn something as well, even though they’re playing,” said director Brianne Kirkby. The coding/game design camp (grades 3 to 5) will allow students to play different games and to work through different coding methods with a module coding system. They will have the opportunity to fully animate their characters with differ-

Sylvan is also offering a Monday to Friday summer book club (grades 4 to 6) where students study a different book each week. “We’re looking to do a mix between popular children’s novels of today, things like Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Harry Potter, as well as

mixing in some of the classics they might encounter within their actual school system,” said Kirkby, listing examples like A Wrinkle in Time, The Hatchet and Charlotte’s Web. For more on the camps, or to sign up, contact delta@sylvan.bc.ca or call 604-943-6022. Sylvan is located at 341835-56th St.

Factors to consider before choosing a summer camp Summer camp is often something kids look forward to, and something they will fondly recall long after they reach adulthood. For many kids, summer camp provides a first taste of independence, as youngsters spend significant time away from home without their parents for the first time in their lives. But as great an experience as summer camp can be for youngsters, it can be just as difficult an experience if parents don’t find the right fit for their children. The following are a few factors parents should take into consideration when seeking a summer camp: Staff — The right staff can make all the difference. Many children are understandably shy when arriving at a summer camp, as their friends from back home might not be joining them. That can make kids hesitant to participate in activities or less enthusiastic about them. A good staff will know how to make kids feel welcome, which should

Parents should ask to see a camp’s daily itinerary. help them come out of their shells and make the most of their summer camp experiences. It’s also good to ask about the vetting process the camp employs before hiring new staff, including the extent of its background checks. A day in the life — When vetting camps for kids, parents should ask what a typical day is like once the season hits full swing. Many parents want their youngsters to have a well-rounded experience, while others might want their kids to attend a more specialized camp, whether it’s a sports or music camp. Regardless of the type of camp, parents should

ask to see schedules and how strictly camps adhere to those schedules. When considering specialized camps, ask if kids will have the chance to simply have a little fun and which types of recreational activities are planned. Camp goals — Another thing parents must consider is the goals of each camp. In addition, parents should look for a camp that wants its attendees to foster relationships with fellow campers. Camp can be lonely for some youngsters, especially those attending for the first time, but a summer camp that strives to promote friendship can reduce, if not eliminate, any feelings of homesickness.

Summer camp is a beloved tradition in many families. Many parents of young children fondly recall spending their summers at summer camp, where they made lifelong friends and learned the finer points of roasting marshmallows and competing in three-legged sack races. Parents looking for the right summer camp for their kids will soon discover there are various types of summer camps, each offering youngsters something different. The following are some of the summer camp options parents can expect to encounter as they search for the right camper for their kids: Day camp Day camps are not overnight camps, which means kids will return home each night rather than sleep over at camp. Day camps typically offer many of the activities people have come to associate with camps, including crafts, sports and even day-trips to experience

A18 The Delta Optimist May 29, 2015 Seniors Week

Activities galore during Seniors Week Centres have events taking place every day next week There are a variety of events and activities planned for Seniors Week this year in South Delta. The week, which celebrates the integral role seniors play in the community, runs from June 1 to 7. Both of the local seniors centres — McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre in Ladner and KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen — have busy schedules for the week. The week starts at McKee on Monday with a breakfast and then a walk through town with a banner to announce the start of Seniors Week. That will be followed by a nutrition talk. Participants will be entered to win prizes, notes Arla Tanner, past chair and current director of instructional programs and annual events. After in-house/membersonly events on Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be carpet bowling and mah jong open houses, as well as a social dance club, on Thursday.

Carpet bowling is really good, says Tanner. “We get a lot of people that come here that lawn bowl and they use this for their practice during the winter,” she says. Friday’s Strawberry Tea honouring 90-plus members is the week’s “big event” at McKee. There will be entertainment and a raffle for a custom Barbie doll. “We have got 23 people who are over 90 years of age that participate every day here. Unreal,” says Tanner. Saturday includes B.C. Seniors Games cribbage playoffs, jackpot bingo and a jazz concert by the Bridge City Band. Seniors Week begins at KinVillage on Monday with a pancake breakfast followed by exercise classes, a sale at Unique Boutique and a games night. There will be a movie shown on Tuesday while a lunch special and “Big Bingo” are set for Wednesday. A round-robin snooker

tournament, with prizes, will be held on Thursday and a big partners bridge tournament is scheduled for Friday. Players coming from across Delta and Richmond will take part, notes director of recreation John Lusted. KinVillage will also be selling tickets for a grand raffle (draw is on July 11) during Seniors Week. “This is big for us,” says Lusted, noting the centre is currently fundraising for a new bus. Seniors Week activities will also be held at civic facilities around South Delta. Planned events include coffee, tea and cookies at Winskill Aquatic & Fitness Centre on Tuesday, a badminton tournament on Thursday and a pickle ball tournament on Friday at the South Delta Recreation Centre, a volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the Ladner Leisure Centre and a scrapbooking session Tuesday at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

There is no shortage of ongoing activities at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. Shari’s Saturday Socials are monthly themed dances. “It’s an awesome program,” says director of recreation John Lusted, noting countless hours are spent decorating for the theme and there is a mini buffet of goodies halfway through the night. The next edition will be held June 13. Those looking to stay physically active have a variety of fitness classes to choose from. Offerings include Pilates, yoga, fitness and strength class, step and strength, and even line dancing. “It’s a good exercise class but it’s a lot of fun. We have great turnouts for our line dancing classes,” says Lusted. A gardening program has just taken off, he adds, noting members can book a raised bed and grow what they like. Everyone needs an estate plan One of the biggest misconceptions about estate planning is that it’s only for the extremely wealthy. But the truth is, anyone with investments, a home, a small business, or any assets he or she would like to pass on should have an estate plan. An estate plan is much more than a will. It is a plan designed to safeguard your estate, smoothly transfer assets upon your passing and care for the ones you love. It is the best way to ensure your assets will be handled as you wish and your legacy is preserved. And it can provide important tax advantages, too. An estate plan doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, there are just five steps to developing a successful estate plan:

1 Simply starting. Jump right in and commit to creating an estate plan. Meet with your financial advisor and begin the process.

2 Following through. Complete all the components pertinent to your estate plan, and consider including each of the five key estate planning documents most people have (see sidebar).

3 Empowering. Appoint an appropriate fiduciary to oversee the estate plan, someone you trust to carry out your wishes when you are no longer able to.

4 Sharing. Communicate the plan with everyone it impacts. Let them know your intentions so there are no misunderstandings.

5 Maintaining. Update your plan regularly, especially whenever events in your life warrant changes.

Take that first step and talk to your financial advisor today about creating your estate plan and turning your life’s work into your legacy.

Time for your yearly beneficiary checkup? A lot can happen in a year: births, deaths, weddings, divorces, graduations, new jobs, and retirements. That’s why it’s a good Idea to review the named beneficiaries in your estate plan, retirement accounts, banking accounts, insurance policies and trust documents at least annually. One of the best ways to make a beneficiary check part of your routine is picking a consistent date to do it every year. But it’s also wise to review your beneficiaries during or immediately following significant life events, such as:

• • • • • •

Essential Estate Planning Documents • A Will, appointing an executor • A power of attorney or limited power of attorney for financial decisions, before death or loss of capacity

PRESERVE YOUR LEGACY An estate plan is designed to safeguard your estate, smoothly transfer assets upon your passing in a tax efficient manner, and provide care plans for the ones you love. Eleanor Calderwood, Zahir Dossa and Vicki Chatterley of the South Delta Financial Group can help you ensure you have the right estate plan for your situation.

• An enduring power of attorney for financial decisions if you are alive but have lost capacity • A power of attorney for personal care, living will, or representation agreement. depending on your province. for medical care decisions if you are alive but have lost capacity • Pre-planned funeral arrangements

Death or incapacity of your spouse or child The birth or adoption of a child or grandchild A significant change in net worth Nearing retirement The impending sale of a family business Changes in tax laws

Whenever you review your beneficiaries, be sure to involve your financial advisor to ensure all your assets are considered and that you don’t overlook opportunities to protect your estate and your loved ones.

• A change in mental or health status

New cookbook gets healthy Ladner’s Jini Aroon recently released Healthy-licious Eating BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Ladner’s Jini Aroon puts a focus on healthy, delicious and easy recipes with her new cookbook — Healthy-licious Eating. The all-vegetarian cookbook covers smoothies, salads, soups, snacks and more. Smoothies are one way to get a high amount of fruit and vegetable servings in one go, she says. “It’s so easy to do five servings,” she says, noting while fruit can be added for sweetness, it’s important to add greens. All of the recipes included in her new cookbook have no white sugar and no white flour. Recipes also offer gluten-free and dairy-free options. There are over 100 recipes in Healthy-licious Eating, she says. She spent about a year working on the project. Oatmeal is among the breakfast dish recipes in the book. “Good old oatmeal. What’s wrong with that? Just get back to the basics,” she says. Aroon, who founded the Ladner Community Kitchen, is a longtime cooking instructor who’s taught through Delta Continuing Education for over 20 years. The book also includes a glossary where Aroon looks at specific ingredients. Aroon will be at Black Bond Books in Ladner’s Trenant Park Square on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. to talk about her new cookbook. She says she’ll have food samples as well. Her book is available at Black Bond Books and Parsley, Sage and Thyme in Ladner and Albany Books in Tsawwassen. An e-book version is available at www.jinisgourmet.com.

Birgit Coath leads an art class at last year’s fair. Tsawwassen United Church is hosting Transformation: An Art Fair Weekend June 5 to 7.

The Tsawwassen United Church’s annual Transformation: An Art Fair Weekend is right around the corner. The open submission gallery and speaker series, set for June 5, 6 and 7, is entering its third year. The gallery opens on the Friday while there will be free studio time, for those who would like to learn about creating art, led by local artist Birgit Coath on the Saturday. Tsawwassen United Church Rev. Daniel Kirkegaard says the artwork for the poster for the upcoming event was created during last year’s studio time by a member of the congregation that had never painted before. “This is what can happen in a fourhour period. It’s a beautiful work of art,” he says. Guest speakers on the Saturday will

include mural artist and entrepreneur Mike Moser and Rev. Yoko Kihara. Kirkegaard says Kihara will be reading poetry from The Sunflower Hill: Together with Children of Fukushima, a book about the devastation, and hope for building, as a result of the tsunami and nuclear plant disaster. The weekend will also include guest musicians. “The connections that we’re always trying to make is these engaging conversations about transformation, inspiration creativity and faith, and how do we tie these together,” says Kirkegaard. Paddlewheeling up the Fraser River coupled with B.C.’s past, linked with province’s future

BY

MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor

It is one of those perfect days — brilliant sunshine, powder blue skies and a soft breeze that carries the scent of summer on its breath. Along with a group of friends, I board The Native, a pretty paddlewheeler moored on the Fraser River alongside the New Westminster boardwalk. As we settle down on the boat and a horn signals our departure, the paddles begin to churn. Hostesses bustle around taking orders for the bar and a buzz of animated conversation floats across the deck as we cast off on our two-and-a-half hour cruise upstream. At first glance, the Fraser River is muscular — an industrial waterway shouldering log booms, tugs and barges to the lumber mills lining its route through the Fraser Valley. But the Fraser is much more than that. It weaves through the

lives of the 2.4 million people who live and work along its 1,375 kilometres from the rugged mountains deep in the heart of B.C. to the delta where it empties into the Gulf of Georgia. It nourishes a unique ecology of plant, fish and bird life, and has been a partner in the province’s history and development over the past two centuries. As the scenery unfolds, so does the history of the Fraser River. The gold rush days (when there were more paddlewheelers along the Fraser than on the Mississippi) are gone, but the Fraser remains at the heart of B.C.’s economy, the lumber industry in particular. Logs braided into raftlike booms lie against the shoreline and cheeky little boom-boats dance around them, nudging errant sticks into place. We move smoothly under Surrey’s Skybridge, the first of several bridges that span the river. Just beyond this

is the venerable Pattullo Bridge, which opened in 1937. Its orange Meccanoconstruction-like archway is a familiar sight to commuters who drive its lanes every day as they stream into New Westminster from Surrey. Breaking into open water, the river is a pastiche of impressions. An osprey

sits on a piling, its feathers ruffled by the breeze. A speedboat buzzes past us like an angry hornet. A goods train worms its way along the distant Surrey shoreline. Hugging the bank, a log salvage barge, its crane outstretched like some ungainly pterodactyl’s beak, retrieves an errant dead-

head. Wild grass, alder and cottonwood trees doze gently on small islands in midchannel and up ahead, the coastal mountains smudge the sky in blue and grey silhouettes. We help ourselves to a buffet of cold cuts and salads as the gates to what was once the B.C. Penitentiary come into view on our left.

No longer a grim fortress, this has been transformed into a romantic restaurant, complete with fairy-tale like columns and ramparts. Coquitlam’s Mary Hill lies further inland, its deforested slopes and jumble of tightly packed buildings, a scar against the hillside. Past TimberWest’s log sort area, the new Port Mann Bridge looms against the sky. We glide under its mammoth concrete arches, and just beyond its stanchions, the old bridge is a crumbling mess of concrete and steel rods. But the Fraser River endures, an inscrutable witness to the passage of time and change — coupled to B.C.’s past, and forever linked to its future. Planting strategies anne marrison

Green Room As May turns into June, we have the opportunity to start plants that might hesitate in lukewarm temperatures but are so quick to surge ahead on hot days that we don’t doubt crops will result. Zucchinis are like this. In the open garden, seed emerges fastest on hills of soil. The bush zucchinis grow nicely there as well as in large containers where slug protection is easier with copper mesh or tape than in the open garden. Also in pots, it’s easier to move zucchinis into a warm sunny spot. If you keep picking, production goes on until frost. It’s time now to plant snap beans like the popular Blue Lake or Gold Rush, or both green and yellow types for colourful salads. The purple-pod ones like Royal

Burgundy are pretty when growing but the pods turn green when cooked. If you haven’t started potatoes yet, now is the time if you still hope to get a crop before blight hits. If it does, it’s best to remove the infested top growth immediately. Then, if you need to leave the potatoes in the ground a little longer, you can. Minus the infected tops, many tubers won’t be blighty. The other pesky potato problem is green tubers. These should not be eaten because green skin indicates presence of a toxin. This can be prevented if you mulch potato plants with five to seven centimetres of soil when the plants are half-grown. It’s tempting to substitute grass mulch but this dries and shrinks, leaving gaps that expose the shallow tubers. It’s too late to start pepper seed, but transplants are a perfect choice for containers that can be placed in the sunshine. Hot peppers, especially the Jalapeno type, are resilient

to adversity and enormously productive. But all pepper plants are pretty as well as useful, especially when fruits slowly ripen and go through various colours. Tomato transplants are another superb choice for containers against a sunny south or west wall — and especially under a roof overhang where tomato blight can be kept at bay. In a pot, tomatoes need rich soil and lots of water. In buying transplants, it’s important to check whether they’re intermediate or determinate kinds. Determinate ones have one stem and produce tomatoes tidily on the flower cluster at the top. Intermediates produce suckers between the main stem and the leaf nodes. It’s important to remove all suckers except the first two or three. These are the only ones with a reasonable chance of producing ripe tomatoes. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Sun Devils holding spring camp next week in preparation for 2015 high school football season BY

Ray Moon is confident his team won’t be a one hit wonder. The South Delta Sun Devils made a huge splash in their first season back at the elite level of B.C. High School Football, winning their first-ever provincial AAA championship. Work on the 2015 campaign officially begins next week with a 10-day spring camp that will conclude with scrimmages in Abbotsford. The Sun Devils will move forward without several key graduating players including Lucas Kirk, Jack McDonald, Blake Gau, Bryce Connors and Thomas Franklin who have all since signed with CIS university programs. Their absence will be enough for perennial AAA heavyweights such as Mt. Doug and Terry Fox to assume “team to beat” status for 2015 which suits the Sun Devils just fine. “You are definitely going to miss guys like that. They are outstanding players and outstanding people,” said Moon, a community volunteer coach who is entering his 10th season in charge. “Altogether, we are losing 14 players. We’re fortunate enough that we will be able to fill a lot of those holes, to the point where there are really only one or two areas of concern.” Backing up Moon’s statement was Football B.C.’s recent U18 and U16 provincial team camps in Richmond. The Sun Devils were well-represented at the invitation only weekend and a number players are considered good bets to make the final U18 roster. Among them is lineman Ryan von Ende who earned a $1,000

It was Sun Devil on Sun Devil at the recent Football B.C. U18 provincial camp as Grant McDonald tries to fight through a pair of blocks, including SDSS teammate Ryan von Ende. Both players had outstanding camps with von Ende earning a $1,000 bursary. bursary from the B.C. Lions as one of the camp’s top players. Other participants included quarterback Kyle Chace, running back Stefanos Goulas, receivers Michael Mann and Cooper Jones, lineman Matt Ward and linebackers Grant McDonald and Charlie Moore. McDonald, who was a two-way starter last season, is only entering Grade 11 next season. “He had an outstanding camp,” said Moon who also serves as an assistant coach with the U16 B.C. team. “There were CIS coaches

and scouts coming up to me saying they were ready to sign him now. They couldn’t believe he has another two years.” “We have been throwing the ball since the second week of February. We are pretty excited with what we have seen so far and are looking forward to seeing them in pads (next week). We think there are about four or five Bantam age players who are going to be able to step up and contribute.” The spring session will feature nine practices and a jamboree in Abbotsford with scrimmages against

Lord Tweedsmuir and Rick Hansen. End zone… One of the Sun Devils’ top off-season priorities is returning to the SDSS oval. With the school closed for much of September during last year’s teacher labour dispute, games were played across the street at Dennison Park — home to the South Delta Rams. The community football program have welcomed their return, however, the hope is to be back at SDSS. To do that, it’s going to take some upgrading at the team’s expense with no funding available from the

school district. “We have had someone look at the field and the estimate is between $3,000 to $5,000 to make it playable again,” said Moon. “There are some potholes and other things that need to be fixed and it’s going to take some fundraising to get the work done. “We are fortunate to have a great relationship with the Rams but, ideally, we would like to be back that the oval.” South Delta will be hosting some high-profile opponents next fall including Mt. Doug, Vancouver College and Notre Dame.

Thormeyer opts to stay close to home for next stage of his swimming career One of Canada’s top young swimmers has decided to stay in the country to pursue higher education and continue his swimming career. After weighing offers from both sides of the border, Tsawwassen’s Markus Thormeyer will join Swim Canada’s High Performance Centre – Vancouver in September and

begin training under head coach Tom Johnson. “I am really pleased that Markus has decided to join the HPC - Vancouver this coming September. He is an exciting young swimmer who will add to the training group here at the centre,” said Johnson. Thormeyer was the youngest male selected to compete at the Pan Am Games in Toronto this summer. He earned his spot on the Canadian team with a strong showing at the recent National Team Trials. The backstroke specialist, who trains with the Winskill Dolphins, was a three-time medallist at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in 2014. “I’m looking forward to next year because of the centre’s excellent staff, resources, and history of success with amazing swimmers.” said the Grade 12 South Delta Secondary student. Thormeyer will be joining his fellow Team Canada swimmers Stefan Milosevic, Coleman Allen, Luke Reilly, Yuri Kisil, Tera Van Beilen, Emily Overholt and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson at the centre. Former Dolphin Noemie Thomas is also training with the group this summer. HPC – Vancouver trains out of the UBC Aquatic Centre and has a long history of success at the international level. “Markus’ decision to continue his swimming career in Canada is a great move,” said Swimming Canada High Performance Director John Atkinson. “He is a great talent who has been prepared very well by coach Ben Keast at Winskill Dolphins Swim Club.”

Islanders fall to Adanacs again For the second straight game, the Delta Islanders had no answer for the Coquitlam Adanacs in the third period. The defending B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champion outscored the visiting Islanders 7-1 in the final 20 minutes in route to a 13-6 win on Wednesday night. The result came on the heels of Coquitlam’s 12-7 victory in Ladner four days earlier. Evan Messenger’s power play goal in the opening minute of the second period actually gave the visitors a 4-1 lead, setting the stage for the Adanacs to come storming back for their seventh straight win (8-0-1). The loss dropped Delta’s record to 7-0-2. The Islanders host Langley Saturday (7:30 p.m.) in Ladner and travel to Nanaimo on Sunday.
