Local wins $12.5M lotto jackpot

Lisa-Marie Draganiuk says she’ll be going house hunting with husband Merle after claiming prize BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

It’s time to go house hunting for lucky South Delta resident Lisa-Marie Draganiuk. The 33-year-old dental hygienist happily accepted a cheque worth $12.5 million at the B.C. Lottery Corporation’s Vancouver headquarters yesterday morning. Draganiuk was one of four winners in Canada to split a $50 million jackpot in last Friday’s Lotto Max draw. She bought the ticket at the Shoppers Drug Mart in Tsawwassen. Standing with her husband Merle, she described how she wasn’t much of a lottery player but had an extra $20 set aside to play. After not winning the previous week, she said her gut was telling her to play a couple more tickets last week. She spent $10, hoping to get a free play. It was announced the next day that someone from Delta had one of the winning tickets, but it wasn’t until she went shopping on Monday and did a self-ticket check that Draganiuk realized she had won big. At first, the machine seemed to indicate she had won $12,500, which she said would have been fantastic enough, but it wasn’t until she contacted the lottery cooperation that she learned just how much she had won. “I was in a state of euphoria and pure and utter disbelief, probably more of the latter, and I think I still am,” Draganiuk said. After she found out she had a $12.5 million winner, she said she had to sit down in a chair as she shook for a while. At first, all she told her husband on the phone

Ladner’s own Four Winds Brewing Company took top prize of Brewery of the Year last weekend at the 2015 Canadian Brewing Awards. In addition to the night’s big award, the brewery also brought home five individual beer awards — two golds, for the Operis Brett Saison and Sovereign Super Saison; two silvers, for the Nectarous Dry-Hopped Sour and Juxtapose Brett IPA; and a bronze for the IPA. “It was pretty shocking,” said brewer Brent Mills, who opened the business two years ago along with dad Greg and brothers Sean and Adam. Brent added that with five visits to the podium throughout the night, he started to think Four Winds might be in the running for Brewery of the Year. “I didn’t expect it until they said our name.” “It was a real pleasant surprise,” said Greg. “Everybody here is really proud of these guys.” Four Winds entered 12 beers, which were judged along with beers from more than 100 other Canadian breweries. The family-owned and operated brewery located in the Tilbury industrial area has quickly grown since opening in June of 2013. After just one year, Four Winds expanded the brewery and tasting room and what started out as

The event will start at 6 p.m. with an information session where a number of community agencies will be available to provide information on youth addiction and mental health as well as family counselling services. The forum will start at 7 p.m. and including presentations from: • Sgt. Lindsay Houghton,

Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit — End Gang Life Campaign. Houghton will provide an update on CFSEU, Surrey RCMP and Delta police’s coordinated response to the current drug conflict in the communities. • Two former gang members that were both involved in various levels of the gang life as youth and adults. The

pair will share their unique experience and insight into what led them towards gangs, and what motivated them to leave the gang life. • Raman Gill, a crime prevention family counsellor, who will share the experiences of working with families and youth who have been impacted by the risks associated with drugs and criminal behav-

iour. • John Jasmins, a Delta police youth liaison officer, will talk about the effectiveness of community collaboration in dealing with high-risk youth. Following the presentations, the speakers will be available to answer questions from the audience. Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend.

Commission not sold on proposals

Pair of development applications involving heritage homes in Ladner Village get rough ride from civic body BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The Delta Heritage Advisory Commission wasn’t sold on development proposals that would impact a pair of heritage homes in Ladner. The commission heard last Wednesday from the applicant behind a proposal affecting the Gillespie House on 47A Avenue as well as a separate development bid for the Roycroft Grant Residence, formerly the home of La Belle Auberge restaurant, on 48th Avenue. The plan to demolish the Gillespie House got a quick rebuff from commission members despite the applicant’s contention that only a small front portion of the structure is the original 1903 home with the rest being mismatched additions. Saying he has had an

inquiry from a local farm property owner to relocate the dwelling, Howard Smid told the commission the small house is dwarfed by an apartment complex and it would take a lot to restore it in any event. A former member of the heritage commission and one of the first members of the Kirkland House Society, Smid said he’s been involved in many restoration projects, but they need to be purposeful and “in the right place at the right time.” The municipality received an application for a four-lot single-family development complete with coach houses where the Victorian cottage-style house is located. The application immediately prompted a temporary protection order for the house. Commission members voted in opposition to the development plan, a posi-

that he has 27 letters of support from residents Commission vice-chair Sylvia Bishop didn’t agree the overall height of the new homes is consistent with other heritage homes in the area, adding the project is too dense. “It loses its grandeur as a heritage home because we have this sardine proposal of cramming in as many homes on the lot that is there. I understand from an investment point of view that you seek as much profit as possible for the land you have invested in, but as a community we have a lot invested where we live... I can not see this application going forward and certainly I would be voting against it in council,” she said. Commission members agreed with chair Jeannie Kanakos that they shouldn’t support the application and that Lalli come back with a revised plan.

Slot machines won’t be making an appearance in Tsawwassen for now. The provincial Ministry of Transportation this week announced it won’t proceed with onboard gambling on B.C. Ferries vessels, a proposal that would have seen a pilot project on the busy Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route. The idea of adding onearmed bandits to ferries surfaced a couple of years ago as another revenue source for the B.C. Lottery Corporation as well as a revenue generator for B.C.

Ferries. However, the ministry is now saying it’s a no-go following a review of a business analysis undertaken by the lottery corporation. That analysis showed the idea wouldn’t make money and would pose a number of challenges. The government would remain open to other revenue-generating services, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone said in a statement, adding that B.C. Ferries is planning other measures to take advantage of available on-board space on some vessels to increase revenues.

Conditions Although Windset Farms greenhouse is computer controlled, much is still done by hand

This is the fourth installment of Off Limits, a series in which Optimist reporter Dave Willis goes where the public isn’t able to tread. He’ll provide a behind-the-scenes look at various operations in the community over the coming weeks.

T

he sheer size of the greenhouse is the first thing that jumps out at you and the rows and rows of green plants really illustrate just how large the structure is. Windset Farms senior grower Ron Moes and marketing manager/ sales Shiho Uzawa recently showed the Optimist

around the operation’s Delta location and after an interview in a meeting room area we ventured inside two of the four big greenhouses on site. Three of them are on 15-acre blocks, and the other one is about 24 acres, says Moes. The temperature inside is noticeably warmer than outside during a midweek

" Senior grower Ron Moes inspects some tomatoes.

" This is where they plug in the electric vehicles used throughout the facility.

afternoon visit. Not stifling hot but definitely warmer. A variety of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are grown at the facility, located on 41B Street, about halfway in between River Road West and Deltaport Way. The greenhouses are climate controlled with computers, notes Moes, adding growers still need to have a green thumb. “You have to be able to read the plant. You can actually tell by looking at the plants if they need to be warmer, if they need to be cooler,” he says. “We program the computer how we want to see it. We make adjustments on a regular basis, with watering, with everything to optimize what the plant requires, so we can optimize the yield.” BY DAVE Windset uses bees to pollinate and hives where only the worker bees can get out are used. Moes says when he started in the industry, people pollinated by hand. “[Bees] do a much better job than we do,” he says. Uzawa notes an integrated pest management program is also in place. That basically means good bugs are used to eat the bad ones.

“We try to avoid using pesticides as much as we can,” she says. In terms of equipment used in the growing process, basically everything is done manually, Moes explains. “In the greenhouse itself, it’s very, very limited in terms of machinery. Everything is hand picked.” For pruning employees start working off carts or scissor lifts when the plants become quite tall, he says. Plants need to be maintained “otherwise it just becomes a giant bush.” When it comes to packing, there are a few machines for sorting cucumbers and peppers but once sizes are sorted out, the finished product is packed by hand, he WILLIS adds. The produce from Windset’s Delta facility is shipped to destinations in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and into Manitoba as well as Washington and California. Uzawa lists Costco, Overwaitea, Safeway, IGA, Walmart and Superstore as some of the recipients. “Sometimes we pick, grade, pack and ship in the same day,” she says.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It’s a great place to live. That’s assuming, of course, you can afford to live here. Delta’s lofty spot in the annual MoneySense magazine’s rankings of the best places to live in Canada is well deserved. To be ranked 13th out of 209 cities across the country would suggest this is an enviable place to live and I think most would agree that’s a pretty accurate characterization of the place we’re lucky enough to call home. When I dug a little deeper into the rankings, which take into account 10 factors, everything from access to health care to income levels, one category stood out for me: affordable housing. Only one of the top 25 cities in the rankings got a check mark for that one (a city must be in the top 25 percentile to be so recognized), yet 15 of the bottom 18 cities in the rankings received a check mark for affordable housing. Delta got a check mark for the ease in which residents can walk, bike and take transit (two out of three’s not bad), but didn’t make the grade in the low crime rate or good weather categories, which I thought would be two of our strong suits. The only three cities in the top 10 to get a check mark for weather are all in Ontario, including Ottawa, which doesn’t strike me as the nicest place to spend a Canadian winter. As with any rankings, there are bound to be some headscratchers as well as debates about placement, but the affordable housing factor is so pronounced it’s difficult not to take notice. Of the top 25 cities, the categories that got the next fewest check marks were low taxes (five) and good weather (six). It stands to reason that each place is going to have different strengths, but it seems that affordable housing is a common weakness. Essentially what the rankings are telling us is that if it’s a nice place to live, the housing won’t be cheap. There’s obviously going to be some correlation between the two, particularly in major metropolitan centres, but it’s even the case in places like Levis, Quebec and Stratford, Ontario. Only one-quarter of the cities can get a check mark in any category, so it’s hard to compete on the housing affordability scale with the likes of Truro, Nova Scotia or Matane, Quebec, both of which are near the bottom overall but got their one and only check mark in the affordable housing column. That being said, it’s clearly an issue here and elsewhere, one that will continue to persist in the absence of concerted efforts on the part of government.

Time of year to start enjoying the bounty of local harvest MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering if it will ever rain again. I gave up on the lawns a couple of weeks ago and the more I think about it, we will likely phase out the grass altogether over the next couple of years. No need for it to play catch with the kid anymore and we haven’t hosted too many sprinkler parties for 10-plus years. We planted our garden veggies earlier than usual and they have been successful thus far. It has been a bit of a crapshoot on the school farm front though. A lot of success but some early “bolting” of some crops has given cause to restart various crops at different schools. If you have driven the neighbouring highways and backroads in Delta of late, you will have likely seen massive clouds of soil dust wafting around. It is dry out there for sure and depending on what

local farmers are growing, the heat and dry weather can be a blessing or a curse. You have probably heard the ads on radio or seen them in the papers promoting the first crops from local growers showing up on retail feature displays. The nugget Warba spuds are hugely popular now and are certainly a favourite sign of summer. Steamed and served with garlic butter, pepper and chives are a classic accompaniment to anything on the grill. I also like to steam them and then drizzle with oil and sriracha for a few minutes on the barbecue. BC Fresh and the Ministry of Agriculture have done a good job of reminding us to buy local when our crops are in season. I’ve had the good fortune to have made it out to Westham Island to pick strawberries a couple of times. The B.C. berry growers have been busy reminding us to buy this seasonal delicacy. When you go through as many smoothies as we do, the sweetness of fresh local berries is unbeatable. The Ladner Village Market opens this Sunday, the Earthwise Saturday Market is open and a new addition to the local scene, the Backroads Family Farm Market, is up and running for its second year.

This little gem of a market features local produce and other food items at the foot of 52nd Street, a few metres from Arthur Drive. Operated by Danielle and Alicia Guichon, Backroads has made a commitment to offer our community fine product from local growers. You need to check it out. They have a simple retail strategy that shows local product with red price tags and there are way more red tags than not. For my part, I am looking for distribution channels for our summer harvest from the Delta school district farms. Mario’s restaurant in Tsawwassen will be using our food for a second year and negotiations are underway with other retailers and restaurants, including Backroads, which is considering options for supporting school-aged farmers in our community. Over the next two weeks the last couple of hundred of our cucumber seedlings will find their way into the ground. We have an experienced canning/pickling team in place and are excited to offer a branded finished product in the fall. Stay tuned. ful. Their cashiers are so pleasant to deal with and the meat counter staff can tell you how many ribs you need for eight people. Our last two barbecues came from our Rona. When it comes to pricing they are ready to do business. Ruth at Albany Books is fantastic. I don’t think there is a book out there she hasn’t read. Billy at the Wood ‘N Frog is really fun. Ha at Amanda Jewellers always has time to come out, say hello and shake your hand whenever we go by. Carly and Ana at Atomic in Ladner are the best. The women’s clothing business is tricky. The ladies at The Urban Rack in Ladner understand pricing and therefore understand their customers. I know there are many more great businesses and business people not named here. I have no doubt these businesses will continue to strive regardless of the changing retail landscape. L. Laferte

Our people and word of mouth drives much of our business. Staff can make or break the shopping experience and right now it is more important than ever that everyone on the payroll knows this. Word of mouth is powerful. Showing customers you appreciate their patronage is vital. So here’s word of mouth in action. Let’s not be afraid to name some names. Great experience should be shared. The service from the men behind the customer service counter at the Home Hardware will keep us shopping there regardless of the big malls across the highway. Several years back we learned “measure twice, cut once” the hard way. Home Hardware corrected our mistake at no charge. Editor: For over two years now I have been reading articles in the Optimist and letters to the editor about the looming opening of Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons, and about how these openings will devastate our retail stores and town businesses. There has been talk about what the Corporation of Delta must do and Tourism Delta must do. Let’s erect more signs. Let’s make better crosswalks. As I see it, the only people or organizations that must do anything are the actual business owners. The answers are right in front of you. It’s your staff and word of mouth. We come from the corporate retail world where a big part of our compensation was tied to a survey question that asked: “How likely are you to refer us to your family and friends?” I know how important this measure is in the retail world. My husband and I are now selfemployed business owners.

Civic engineering crews applauded for their diligence Editor: I’d like to express my thanks to the hardworking crew from the Corporation of Delta’s engineering department that has been diligently working on

renewing water pipes in our area (53A Street and 1st Avenue). They are always polite, ready to escort the residents through the minefield of machinery needed in the

Port now looks beyond just efficient shipping

Editor: Re: Port calls T2 only feasible option to meet growth, letter to the editor, June 5 Port Metro Vancouver erroneously states Roberts Bank Terminal 2, with three new container berths, is needed to meet anticipated growth in the container business. The port plans to dredge and build a 115-hectare island smack in the Fraser

estuary where our worldrenowned migratory birds, salmon and endangered killer whales feed and migrate. Since 2003, forecasts of anticipated growth have been highly inflated and even the lowest case forecasts have not been realized. The Canadian west coast container business matured and flatlined in 2007. From 2007 to 2014, the container business has grown annu-

ally at 2.2 per cent. Port Metro Vancouver shows growth rates that compare back to 2001 (when the container business was getting established) and then project a growth of more than four to six per cent. Even if their forecast were correct, B.C., with planned efficiencies and upgrades (including the Port of Prince Rupert), has sufficient container capacity to handle triple the current

business without a new terminal at Roberts Bank. Port Metro Vancouver needs Terminal 2 so it can collect lease money as well as wharfage and berthage fees. While the total tonnage of business (containers and bulk shipping) through Port Metro Vancouver grew at 3.26 per cent per year from 2008 to 2013, the net income of Port Metro Vancouver grew at 18.5 per

cent per year. Management salaries grew at 13.7 per cent. CEO wages grew at 17 per cent. Payments in lieu of taxes to municipal governments went down three per cent per year. Port Metro Vancouver is using profits to buy land (including in the Agricultural Land Reserve) for future lease income. The B.C. government owns ALR lands in the vicinity of

Roberts Bank. Real estate interests have options on ALR lands and a non-profit organization (that receives port contracts) also owns several ALR properties in the area. Our ports used to be about efficient shipping. Now they are about land acquisitions and business spin-offs that don’t consider the best shipping options for Canadians. Susan Jones

Milly

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog/Coon Hound Mix Breed, Tri Color, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 2 years old) Milly is a really smart girl who already has a handle on basic commands. Her previous owner described her as a great swimmer who loved to visit the bog. She is a friendly girl who likes to socialize and be with her people but in the past she has gotten jealous or protective over them. During her behavior assessment she did great and did not show any outward aggression. We think Milly should go to an active adult only home, with no children and no other pets. Milly will need a firm but gentle, consistent owner who is willing to work on her training and keep both her body and mind stimulated. What a smart girl!

We benefit from trees in multitude of ways ANNE MURRAY

BY THE BAY As I sat down to write this column, a hummingbird dive-bombing a dragonfly in our garden distracted me. Drawn outside to watch, I relaxed for a while in the shade of a tree, enjoying the dappled sunlight. A robin sang melodically nearby and a red-breasted nuthatch gave its scratchy call as it inched up the bark of a cedar tree. Distant traffic and airplane sounds were muted. I am fortunate to live in a neighbourhood that still has many large conifers and landscaped yards, where birds sing and native bees and butterflies forage among the flowers. Trees and natural landscapes have many benefits for humans far beyond resource values. Had I undergone a medical procedure, my ability to sit in such a garden could have been critical to recovery. Studies show that hospital patients recover more quickly when looking at trees through a window compared with streetscapes or blank walls. Children with hyperactivity and seniors experiencing dementia experience greater calm in natural surroundings. Neighbourhoods with trees, parks and gardens encourage walking and other recreation that benefits fitness and health. Trees are essential in making the earth inhabitable, absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and

Their absorption of carbon dioxide is important in mitigating climate change. Trees absorb air pollutants, dust and grime, and take up rainwater from the ground, preventing run off and flooding, and stabilizing bluffs and slopes. Biodiversity is greater where there are native trees that foster specific animal, plant and fungal associations. Western red cedars have an iconic place in First Nations history and traditions, used for houses, boats, clothes and fishing nets. Massive Douglas firs could live for over 1,000 years and grow over 100 metres tall. Some local trees, like the 30-metre American elm in Ladner’s Memorial Park, have been designated as heritage trees, and more are worthy of that title. In the eagerness to maximize house sizes and

profits, many new and infill developments occupy the whole extent of a lot, leaving no room for trees or landscaping. This disregards the many studies that show suburbs with natural landscaping have higher property values. Trees make a neighbourhood a more desirable place to live. In consideration of tree protection, the Corporation of Delta has just instituted an Urban Reforestation Project aimed at compensating felled trees with new plantings. Perhaps land owners will also consider keeping mature trees, not cutting them. Anne Murray is a local naturalist and writer. Her books on Delta’s natural and ecological history, A Nature Guide to Boundary Bay and Tracing Our Past, a Heritage Guide to Boundary Bay, are available in local stores or from www.natureguidesbc.com.

Worship Sundays at 10:00am “All are warmly welcomed to worship with us as we Celebrate God’s Grace.”

Give us this day our daily... If you have any experience with church, you can probably finish that sentence. It is part of what is commonly known as the Lord’s Prayer and it says: “Give us this day our daily bread.” Many of us have prayed that, but have we really thought about it? Would you really want God to give you the food you need on the actual day you need it? Although many people do live day-to-day with even their food, that would be a constant source of tension and worry. For most of us, if we are out of food, our first thought isn’t to ask God to give us our daily bread. After our initial panic, we start calling family or friends, or try to connect

with a food bank, or something like that. We are obviously far more comfortable if there is enough money in the account and food in the fridge to meet our needs. But all of us live day-to-day with many things in our lives. We have serious needs beyond the food we eat that require daily provision. We could (and should!) pray: Give us this day our daily... patience with our kids, or love for our spouse, or energy for our work, or hope in our discouragement, and on and on. Jesus teaches us to ask God to meet our daily needs, as we need them — and to trust him to provide. Give us this day our daily... Mike invites dialogue at mike@ ladnerbaptist.ca.

Doug Sabourin will be retiring as executive director of Deltassist later this year. A search is underway for his replacement.

Deltassist is undertaking search to replace retiring executive director

After nine years as the executive director of Deltassist, Doug Sabourin will be stepping down and heading into retirement this fall. “I have very much enjoyed my time working with and for the people of Delta,” says Sabourin. “Every day is different, some happy, some sad, but the best days are when we make a meaningful change in someone’s life.” Deltassist offers drug and alcohol counselling, support for victims of violence, suicide prevention, seniors counselling and other community services. The charity is also responsible for delivering United Way’s

Better at Home seniors’ initiative, and is best known for coordinating the annual Christmas Toy Depot and food hamper program. “Deltassist is a place of hope,” adds Sabourin. “We meet people at some of the lowest points in their lives and help them get back on track. It can be tough seeing so many people facing troubles, but our job is to help them find a way to overcome their problems and start to enjoy life again.” Sabourin’s career started in the late 1960s, and has included social planning for the City of Vancouver, executive director of the Canadian Diabetes Association and numerous

non-profit associations. “It has been a pleasure working with Doug over the past nine years,” says Warren Hughes, president of the Deltassist board of directors. “He has built a great team of people to deliver many, many services in a professional, caring manner.” The board has initiated a process to replace Sabourin in the coming months. More information about the executive director’s position can be found in the careers

section of its website at www.deltaassist.com. “While I’m excited about my future, I will miss the staff, the volunteers and the clients,” says Sabourin. “We deal with so many serious issues on a daily basis, but through it all we make each other smile, because a smile is the first step to improving any situation.” Deltassist has helped thousands of families and individuals cope with personal and economic challenges since 1972.

He was doing what he loved best, going out for a ride, and he did not suffer. We’ve enjoyed watching him over the years visiting around the streets, pulling an elegant carriage, or a special chariot with torque riding in the back. We loved seeing Gordy riding him on the dyke and beach, often with no saddle or bridle, in perfect harmony. Bob was a character, he enjoyed an occasional coffee at the mcdonald’s drive-thru. He pushed his nose into your pocket as he enjoyed a dog cookie as a treat.

Smoking and Medical Oxygen

FACTS The risk of dying in a home structure fire caused by smoking materials rises with age. One out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

Never smoke and never allow anyone to smoke where medical oxygen is used. Medical oxygen can cause materials to ignite more easily and make fires burn at a faster rate than normal. It can make an existing fire burn faster and hotter. Your Source for SAFETY Information www.nfpa.org/education

Social skills are the focus at Sunny Town Learn & Play Childcare Centre in Tsawwassen. “That’s very important to us. The children really love it here. They have fun playing,” said owner Ray Win Hatcher.

The childcare facility, which opened last month, offers infant and toddler care, a group daycare/preschool program and school age care. School age care is offered for South Park students but she said she’s looking to expand to offer pick-ups and drop-offs for other schools. Teachers, who are trained early childhood educators, also play with the kids. “That’s part of my philosophy,” she said.

South Delta rapper heads east Greg Beamish to perform at NXNE festival in Toronto next weekend BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Hip-hop artist Greg Beamish will get his first taste of performing at a big festival next weekend at NXNE in Toronto. “I’m really looking forward to that,” says Beamish, 30, who grew up in Tsawwassen and is now living in Vancouver. NXNE (North by Northeast) runs June 17 to 21 and features performances from many artists at a number of venues around the city. He’s no stranger to performing in front of sizable audiences, having opened for some big names in the genre like T-Pain, Ghostface Killah and Redman. Beamish has also taken his act on the road, recently playing shows in Japan and Germany. He says the crowds were good in Tokyo and that it’s more about the vibe and

feeling there compared to Germany where people really like to dissect your lyrics. “Toronto, I hear they’re kind of a tough crowd, so I’ll have to see how it goes,” he says with a chuckle. The South Delta Secondary grad’s latest release, Dude on Fire, came out in January. The album, produced by Moka Only, has a lo-fi feel to it and a more ambient or relaxing sound than an intense one, he explains. The album process is usually drawn out and Beamish says that can be frustrating but that wasn’t the case with Dude on Fire. He says it was completed in about two days.

TV project lands development deal Ladner stand-up comedian and actor Darcy Michael’s latest TV project has got a development deal. “It’s pretty surreal,” says Michael. The sitcom, titled Darcy, is about married couple, Darcy and Jeremy, and how they deal with marriage, money and family. The show is very much drawing from his life and his standup, says Michael. Michael is working with a writing partner on the show and says they’ve got one script down and a bunch to go. After July, Michael’s tour schedule slows down enough that they’ll be able set up a production office and really start cranking out the work, he says. Production company Project 10 inked the development deal with Bell Media. Michael was recently seen on the CTV sitcom Spun Out.

Author in Ladner for signing

Author Stephen Foey will be at Black Bond Books in Ladner Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to sign copies of his new book, Ooh-la-la Land: Escapades on the French Riviera. The book is described as a deftly funny travel narrative, in which an Anglophone couple escapes to the French Riviera, encountering beauty, romance, ooh-lala moments, and more hijinks and hilarity than they had ever bargained for.

Lansdowne qualifies for Huntress finals BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Long-time Ladner resident Shannon Lansdowne has made it to the finals of the 2016 Extreme Huntress Competition. Lansdowne, who grew up in Ladner but moved to Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island in 2013, will be joining five other finalists at the famed 777 Ranch in Texas next month where they will compete in a

series of challenges to test their physical fitness, shooting, tracking and hunting skills. The competition is all caught on film and then broadcast online at www. extremehuntress.com over 13 weeks. Each week viewers vote for who they think should win the title. The online voting results will be combined with head-to-head skills competition and judges’ scores.

The episodes will begin airing this fall and online voting will begin Oct. 1. “The Extreme Huntress Competition continues to set the bar for serious outdoorswomen, while at the same time providing positive role models for women who are new to hunting, shooting and other traditional outdoor sports,” according to the competition website. To enter the contest, each woman had to submit an

essay describing why she is an extreme huntress. A panel of six judges considered all the submissions and chose the top-20 to move on to the semi-finals. Lansdowne made the cut and then made it to the finals based on a combination of judges’ scores and online voting. Lansdowne is one of two B.C. women who made it to the final. The other four finalists all hail from the United States.

Lansdowne was introduced to hunting at a young age. Her father was an outfitter and owned 10,000 square miles of hunting territory on the province’s central coast where he would guide clients on hunts. She also worked for a time as a hunting guide. FILE PHOTO

It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an experienced rider. Falls happen all the time – even to professionals. And the consequences can be life altering.

“Safety has nothing to do with level of skill,” says Olympic dressage rider Courtney King-Dye, who suffered a severe brain injury while training a show horse in a familiar ring at home. When the horse suddenly slipped and fell, King-Dye went down too, landing underneath the horse and fracturing her skull. She wasn’t wearing a helmet.

604-946-6864

The Canadian Equestrian Federation has now changed the rules for dressage riders, who used to wear top hats at high levels of competition. Now, all levels of riders are required to wear a proper helmet. During her long recovery, King-Dye founded Riders 4 Helmets, an organization that promotes helmet safety. Each year, on International Helmet Awareness Day, riders are encouraged to take a good look at the helmet they are using to make sure it is CSA approved and still in top condition.

WHERE RIDERS ARE UNLIMITED! Therapeutic riding for those with physical, cognitive or emotional diagnoses www.ponypals.org

Helmet manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every five years, even if it has not been dropped or damaged. Heat, sweat, dust and rain can contribute to the deterioration of the protective foam inside the helmet shell. Of course, if you have a hard blow impact accident while wearing your helmet, you should immediately replace it. Many manufacturers offer a discount on crash replacements so riders are not tempted to keep on using damaged headgear. While most people who ride English are required to wear a helmet by the stable where they take lessons, a surprising number of Western riders and recreational trail riders still ride without this basic piece of equipment. There is perception that most bad falls occur while jumping a horse. And, it is true that the sport of eventing is particularly dangerous. But, in fact, there are no statistics to indicate that the risk of suffering a head injury is any less in Western riding.

Competitive riders most often choose a helmet made by the high-end manufacturers: Charles Owen, Samshield and GPA. These helmets can cost as much as $800, depending on the materials used and the testing that has gone into creating their design. While there is no official rating system for riding helmets, all brands sold in Canada must meet basic safety standards. When shopping for a new helmet, be sure to have a qualified sales person help out with the fit. The helmet should feel snug without causing pressure points. It should sit about an inch above the eyebrows, with the visor parallel to the ground (not tilted up). Riders with long hair should try on helmets with their hair worn the same way as when they are riding. A pony tail tucked up under a helmet will increase the size needed.

DRESSAGE • CROSS COUNTRY • STADIUM JUMPING

Traditionally, cowboys have always worn wide brimmed cowboy hats to protect them from the sun. But this was in the days before helmets were available. Today, there are several Western-styled helmets that are ideal for trail riding. They are lightweight, have air vents for cooling, and a visor to block the sun. A top seller at Greenhawk stores is the Tipperary Sportage helmet, priced at $74.99. Available in carbon grey and cocoa brown matte finishes, these helmets are suitable for both English and Western riding. With optional extra padding, they are easy to fit to most heads and come in sizes XS to XL. As well, Greenhawk sells several styles of helmets that have a dial at the back to create a snug fit. These are ideal for children who are still growing and whose parents don’t want to have to buy a new helmet every year!

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

He is Burnaby Firefighter living in Steveston with two young children. Navi Sekhon still finds the time to spend a couple of hours each Monday in the town where he grew up. “We are all passionate about Pacer Basketball and that’s why we are here,” explained the star of the 1993 Delta Secondary School senior boys team. “We thought maybe it was time to step in bit because basketball had taken a little bit of a side seat here to nobody’s fault.” Joined by the efforts of others who still bleed green, including Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Dean Bauck, the Delta Pacer Basketball Association(DPBA) has struck an agreement with administration to oversee the Ladner school’s hoop program. For the past couple of months, the DPBA has hosted an open gym on Monday nights. The sessions are for boys and girls — ranging from Grades 7-12. At one end of the floor are potential members of the senior

boys team, while the other end features future Pacers getting comfortable shooting hoops in the school’s cavernous gym. That’s the point the DPBA wants to make clear. This isn’t about pouring their energy towards one age group that happens to be coming through the school right now. It’s doing its part to help the sport flourish and ensure all six Pacer teams — Grade 8, junior and senior — have healthy numbers and players with a foundation base of skills that will enjoy the game and the high school environment. Just like these Pacer grads did. “We are not trying to create an elite system here where the goal here is to have a star team,” explained Bauck. “We will have good teams just by doing this. But when these kids are 25 or 30, they will be better people too. They will enjoy basketball, enjoy the good experience they had and remember how it helped propel them to other parts in their life. “We were fortunate to have that when we went to high school so why not them?

Sekhon has stayed close to the Lower Mainland basketball scene over the years with many of his friends involved with high school teams that he has provided assistance to. “The reason these programs are successful now is they are a yearround thing and that’s where we want to take this to,” he said. “It’s making it a grassroots program focused on fundamentals, skills and just letting them play. It’s going back to what the late (and my former coach) Dunc Anderson did by having a place for kids to play all the time.” Sekhon acknowledges there is plenty of work to be done, especially getting more girls playing basketball at DSS. “We have to start at the bottom and it’s to find a way to get girls interested in basketball. We have to come up with a plan. It will take some time but we will get there.” The DPBA has lined up coaches for four of the six DSS teams for next season, including accomplished outside volunteer coach David Craig taking on the senior boys team. Longtime DSS teacher Kerrie

Trotman will once again oversee the Grade 8 girls, while Pacer alumni Rachel Bock is returning to coach junior girls. Another DSS grad — Kenny Ryan — is in charge of the Grade 8 boys. Sekhon says the open gym will continue until end of the school year. and start up again in September. Players will be encouraged to attend the Split Second Basketball Camp at the end of July which will take place at DSS. The camp is headed by former UBC standout and European pro Eric Butler and he has put together an impressive list of guest coaches that includes one of Canada’s alltime great scorers Joey Vickery. Sekhon will also be involved. The DPBA encourages more current and future DSS students to come to their weekly sessions. The Split Second Camp is open to anyone in South Delta and beyond. It’s scheduled for July 27-July 30 and features three age groups — Grades 2-4, Grades 5-8 and Grades 9-12. For more information visit www. pacerbasketballbasketball.com

Nine athletes from Delta Gymnastics will have an experience of a lifetime, leaving this weekend on a training trip to China. “The trip is organized by Coach Gao, who has a variety of connections in China,” explained Mike Hood, Delta Gymnastics Men’s Competitive Program Coordinator. “Six of our boys will stay for two weeks and three will stay for a month. The purpose of this trip is for the boys to experience how the best athletes in the world train and what kind of effort and focus it takes for an athlete to reach international level success.” The boys, who will travel with their coaches but not their parents, are between the ages of 10 and 19 years of age and currently train between 16 and 24 hours per week. They include: Que Bidewell, Hunter Woodhead, Nicholas Pham, Ryan Woodhead, Cole Schallig, Caleb Richmond, Alex Farquharson, Conor Edgson and Russell Woodward. ChickenntRaraiised o in O

All will be staying at the Suzhou City Children Amateur Sports School — a boarding school for athletes located about two hours west of Shanghai. It develops national level athletes in sports like badminton, diving, tae kwon do, swimming and gymnastics. “For many of the boys, this is the first time they travelling to China, and the first time they travel without their parents. Besides their weeks of training, they will also be experiencing the culture by living and interacting with other children and youth. They will visit ancient cities and sights, and they will even learn how to make dumpling,” added Hood. Besides Suzhou, the local contingent will also train at Wuxi City, a city 20 minutes away from Suzhou. Two years ago, a group of Suzhou athletes came to Vancouver and trained at the Delta Gymnastics facility in Ladner. “I’m excited about this trip; it will be really good to see how these athletes Beef Raised rn C in Weste anada

I’m pretty adventurous about food so I think I will be fine to try new things.” The group will leave on Saturday accompanied by their coaches. “They don’t speak a lot of Mandarin but they all know how to say thank you,” laughed Hood.
