Reach hits a milestone in fundraising campaign to build centre in the heart of Ladner BY

Reach Child and Youth Development Society celebrated passing the halfway point in its $5-million capital campaign at an event Wednesday in Ladner.

The society is raising money to build a three-storey children’s facility at the site of the Kinsmen

House on the edge of Memorial Park. The project is a partnership between Reach, the Corporation of Delta and the LadnerTsawwassen Kinsmen Club.

Reach president Rob Van Spronssen told the crowd at Wednesday’s event that the new centre will allow the society to double the number of children with special needs it can support.

“Moreover, being here in the heart of the community allows us to be much more visible and accessible to families and youth,” Van Spronssen said.

A sign, which notes the site will be the future home of the centre, was unveiled at Wednesday’s gathering.

“We are thrilled to have achieved this important point in

our capital campaign and grateful to our many generous donors who have helped us get here,” said Reach executive director Renie D’Aquila.

It’s hoped that construction of the centre will begin in the spring of next year.

Reach has been helping children with special needs and their families for over 50 years.

A Tsawwassen woman is in Vienna this week to present an anti-nuclear bomb campaign at a United Nations’ conference.

Bridgitte Taylor and two of her colleagues flew to Vienna to present their Ban the Bomb Campaign.

Taylor just completed her third year of international relations studies at UBC. She and two colleagues developed the campaign as a class project and were

invited to Vienna to present it at the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization’s (CTBTO) Science and Technology Conference.

The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty came into force in 1996 with the aim of banning all nuclear explosion on Earth — whether for military or peaceful purposes. The treaty sets up nuclear monitoring stations to collect data on whether a nuclear test has been conducted.

As of March of this year,

183 of the 196 eligible countries have signed the treaty and 164 of those have ratified the treaty. Canada signed the treaty in 1996 and ratified it two years later. However, according to the campaign, some of the world’s most significant nuclear powers — including the U.S., China and North Korea — have signed but not yet ratified the treaty.

The Ban the Bomb Campaign aims to educate the public and inspire people to take what they have learned and demand change

from policy makers.

Taylor said the campaign was born out of a one-ofa-kind class at UBC that brought together political science and engineering students.

“You can’t understand nuclear politics without understanding the science behind it,” Taylor said, adding that as she learned more about the science behind nuclear bombs, she began to see how closely the science was linked with policies and politics.

“The Ban the Bomb

Campaign is about change,” the group states on its website. “It’s about moving forward as a global community, setting a legacy for future generations and demanding an end to nuclear weapons testing in all corners of the globe.”

To that end, Taylor and her colleagues have established a website with interactive educational tools and are spreading the message through social media.

Bylaw officers can now issue tickets to sprinkling violators

With dry weather expected to continue all summer, Delta council this week moved to beef up enforcement around water restrictions.

Civic politicians approved a bylaw amendment Monday that gives bylaw officers the power to

issue tickets to those sprinkling outside their designated day and time.

Metro Vancouver initiated Stage 1 watering restrictions on June 1.

Under Stage 1, even-numbered addresses are permitted to sprinkle lawns from 4 to 9 a.m. on Mondays,

Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Odd-numbered addresses are permitted to sprinkle lawns from 4 to 9 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Stage 1 watering restrictions only apply to lawn sprinkling and do not cover the watering of flowers,

vegetables, shrubs and trees.

Under Stage 1 restrictions, residents caught watering outside of their designated day and/or time could be issued a $150 fine.

The fines go up to $250 at Stage 2, $400 at Stage 3 and $500 at Stage 4.

Engineering director Steven Lan said staff will work to educate residents and will only issue tickets to those obviously flouting the rules.

Watering restrictions throughout the region will remain in place until Sept.

• June 16, 9:50 a.m., 5500-block of 9th Avenue: Complainant brought in four used needles found in the park near the seniors’ centre. The complainant indicated there has been an increase in drug activity in the shrub area as well as homeless people sleeping in the park. Police to provide increased patrols in the park and a request will be made to trim the shrubs.

• June 17, 5:22 p.m., Underhill Drive. Report received that a break and enter appeared to be happening. Police attended and set up a containment of the area but no suspects located. The owner returned home and confirmed the theft of several items, including a laptop computer and personal electronics. It appears the suspects entered the residence through an unlocked window on the bottom floor.

• June 18, 5:20 p.m., 5500-block of 15B Avenue: Complainant reported his bicycle was stolen from his locker in the common area of his residence. The locker was entered sometime in the past two months by breaking the lock. The bike is described as blue and silver 10-speed. Report received for insurance purposes.

• June 20, 3:31 a.m., 1500-block of 56th Street: The convenience store reported several male youth came into the store and stole items valued at $8.

Police viewed video and observed three young males distracting and bullying the store clerk. The clerk indicated this is a weekly occurrence and it is getting more aggressive. Police will examine the surveillance video to identify the

suspects.

Ladner • June 15, 2 p.m., 5200block of Ladner Trunk Road: Unknown person left an iPad mini and set of car keys in the store. It’s not known when the items were left behind. The owner can claim on identification at police headquarters in Ladner.

• June 19, 4:42 p.m., 6500-block of 68th Street: Report received of a theft of metal in progress from a farm field. Police attended and located two males in an overgrown field with a pickup truck loaded with scrap metal. The males were arrested for theft under $5,000 and released on a promise to appear in court at a future date as well as several conditions.

One of the males was found to have an outstanding warrant and was transported to cells.

• June 20, 2:24 a.m., 7800-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Traffic stop initiated for a vehicle observed traveling at 70 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. A computer query found the driver to have a driving prohibition and as a result he was arrested for driving while prohibited, issued a court date and released. The vehicle was impounded.

A passenger in the vehicle indicated he had just been released from hospital and was in extreme pain.

Emergency services attended the scene and medically cleared the passenger. The driver and the passengers left the area by taxi.

• June 20, 5:18 a.m., 4600-block of Clarence Taylor Crescent: The leisure centre reported the rear glass door had been broken.

Police attended and found a glass panel removed from the door and five vending machines broken into.

Police will examine video surveillance to identify suspects.

Agencies unite for annual truck blitz

Delta police and its partner agencies were out in force this week for the annual commercial truck inspection blitz.

This marks the ninth year the Delta Police Department has partnered with the provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch and other agencies for the three-day initiative.

Sgt. Mike Scholz of Delta’s traffic unit said Wednesday he expected between 450 and 500 inspections to be performed over the course of the program.

More than 90 officers from different agencies — including the Integrated Road Safety Unit, Surrey RCMP and bylaw department, Deas Island RCMP traffic unit, New Westminster police and CP police — were at eight locations throughout Delta.

Delta has one of the highest ratios of commercial vehicles transiting its

roads on a daily basis, Scholz said, making this one of the largest initiatives of its type in the province.

The annual program aims to inspect as many commercial vehicles as possible with a focus on those that might not be properly maintained and could ultimately pose a danger on the road.

Any vehicle with an out of service designation is not allowed to proceed before the problem is fixed.

The department has a number of mechanics, tire companies and tow trucks on standby to help fix any issues and get trucks back on the road.

While the final results for this year’s event have yet to be released, last year’s blitz saw 476 trucks require a secondary inspection. Of those, 71 (15 per cent) passed with no defects or violations, 189 (40 per cent) were immediately put out of service and 216 (45 per cent) had a violation or defect present that did not require an out of service designation but did need repair.

A total of 355 tickets were issued for a total of $72,951 in fines.

Delisle said the out of service rating for the annual inspection initiative is usually high because officers target trucks that are more likely to have some kind of issue.

Tour de Delta to kick off ‘Superweek’ of cycling

In two weeks, more than 200 professional cyclists from every corner of North America and around the world will converge on Delta for the Tour de Delta, the first leg of B.C. Superweek.

“Delta is a fantastic community that is incredibly welcoming to the teams and riders taking part in our series,” said race director Mark Ernsting.

The $25,000 cycling weekend will include the MK Delta Criterium on Friday, July 10 in North Delta, the Brenco Criterium on Saturday, July 11 in Ladner and the UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday, July 12 in Tsawwassen.

MURPHY’S LAW If it’s Friday, that must mean KerryLynne Findlay is making another stop on her Magical Money Tour.

The first-term Conservative MP for Delta-Richmond East has been kept busy in recent weeks handing out cash in the riding, and always on Friday afternoon just in time to make someone’s weekend.

Three weeks ago she was at Kirkland House in Ladner to announce $9,000 in funding for local Canada Day celebrations. No, these aren’t new events that are being made possible by the generosity of our federal government, but rather festivities that have been taking place in these parts for years and years.

The following Friday Findlay was at municipal hall to announce $50,000 in federal funding for the Tour de Delta. If you’re not familiar with the race, it’s the same cycling weekend that’s been operating quite nicely for a decade-and-a-half without Ottawa’s help.

Last Friday she was in Richmond to announce $21,000 in funding for the Steveston Salmon Festival, a Canada Day staple in that city for the last 70 years, and one that has presumably flourished without support from the feds during that time.

I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth as I’m sure the organizers, the service clubs and volunteer boards that scrape around for funding and sponsorship to make these events possible on an annual basis, are grateful for the cash Findlay’s government has provided.

I would even entertain the argument that the recent largesse could have something to with having a Tory cabinet minister represent the riding. Findlay’s role as minister of national revenue obviously comes with some clout, which could be why we’ve been the recipients of such goodies.

However, with a federal election less than four months away, I can’t help but think we’re trying to be bought with our own money. The $7 million Celebrate Canada program, which has been established to fund events to mark National Aboriginal Day, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Canadian Multiculturalism Day and Canada Day, is designed to allow us to show our love for Canada and our pride in being Canadian.

That sounds all fine and well, but weren’t we already doing a pretty decent job of showing our Canadian pride by attending the celebrations that are staged every July 1?

My cynicism would most definitely be allayed if the funding made an encore appearance next June, three-plus years before the next election, but something tells me we might not be quite so patriotic at that time.

Tolls in our future if new span follows lead of other bridges IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT Last week the B.C. Ministry of Transportation briefed about 80 people at the monthly South Delta Probus Club meeting on its plans for the George Massey Tunnel replacement.

As presented, there will be a 10-lane bridge over top of the current tunnel. It will allow for an enhanced/new Steveston interchange, and an enhanced/new Highway 17A interchange. River Road is to be connected but was not explained.

On the bridge there will be three lanes each way for regular traffic, one each way for transit, and one lane each way for slow moving vehicles. Rapid transit may be incorporated later on an additional bridge level. Pedestrian and cyclists will be accommodated, likely on a pathway outside the bridge roadway. So, no more congestion?

The bridge will have a height

above water the same as the Alex Fraser (58 metres above high tide), and with the approaches, a slope of five per cent. That makes it a climb, but no worse than other locations around Vancouver.

The disposition of the tunnel, once de-commissioned, is yet to be resolved. The tunnel is not a restriction on marine traffic as there is a Metro water line downstream that sits at about the same depth, and it is not scheduled to be relocated.

Forecasts to 2045 include a doubling of truck traffic and only a 20 per cent increase in cars.

The ministry reports that much of the tunnel traffic goes between Delta/Surrey and Richmond, and not beyond in either direction.

While transit accounts for one per cent of vehicles, it carries 17 per cent of the people. As well, we are told that 60 per cent of us going to Vancouver use transit.

Costs are not (yet) announced, nor public. Will the bridge be tolled? Is there a Santa Claus? The recently-built bridges — Golden Ears and Port Mann — are both PPP (public-private partnership) where private financings provide much of the funds in return for guaranteed payments over the life of the bridge.

The funds to repay come from you and me paying tolls. It’s like a mortgage where B.C. has private financiers lend it money to finance the bridge and they get repaid with the tolls over a long time.

The popularity of PPP is that, compared to the way the governments used to finance projects, the costs and debts do not show up on government financial statements — the money is from private sources.

The challenge occurs when the government misjudges how much it will collect in tolls from you and me.

In the Golden Ears case, they overestimated the revenue by 50 per cent and so B.C. must pay the private source $38 million/year extra for 32 years. As well, traffic is down in part because the tolls are too high.

Likewise, the Port Mann Bridge had a significant decrease in traffic once tolls were introduced and is costing B.C. $80 million per year under the PPP, a brutal reminder to provincial geniuses to get real with numbers.

Will you use the bridge if the toll is as much as $5 each way, each time?

More than peeps affected Editor: Re: Peeps vs. port playing out at Roberts Bank, letter to the editor, June 17 I would like to point out there are many other species that could negatively be affected by another Port Metro Vancouver island creation in the Fraser River estuary.

In addition to peeps (western sandpipers), many other migratory and resident bird populations, shellfish, salmon, resident killer whales and other associated wildlife are dependent on the estuary. The majority of these species are already

impacted by the existing facility at Deltaport. Do we really want to wipe them all out?

The dead zone between the two causeways (Deltaport and B.C. Ferries) is a horrific example of botched port development.

It is time to rethink the T2 proposal and reassess any need to dredge and construct another island.

Options that include ongoing projects at other West Coast terminals and the port of Prince Rupert should proceed long before consideration of a T2 expansion.

PARENT POLL APPROVES PRIMARY YEARS IB PROGRAM TO BE OFFERED AT ENGLISH BLUFF ELEMENTARY A recent parent poll indicated overwhelming support for the school to make an application for candidacy to offer the Primary Years IB Program at English Bluff Elementary.

Simply put, with already existing and impending infrastructure, reduced global economic activity and the potential for negative environmental impact, the T2 expansion proposal should be shelved.

It is time to apply the brakes and put environmental needs before the economic interests of pro development groups.

Irreversible damage to the Fraser River estuary and both human and wildlife populations will be the ultimate legacy.

Cutting down a tree is a personal choice

Editor: Re: Tree protection bylaw should be even stricter, letter to the editor, June 17 We live in a society where we can all be thankful that we have freedoms and choice. Tsawwassen is an incredibly beautiful town with residents that take great pride in their homes and gardens, more so than any other municipality that I have ever lived in.

If I choose to remove an

out-of-scale, shade-making or misplaced tree and replace it with a new one better suited to my lot, that’s my business. I paid a pretty penny to live here and I should not have to wade knee deep into red tape to get it done.

Delta council has taken a middle of the road, workable approach that will prevent reckless clearing of trees while still allowing its residents to beautify and

create a vision of their perfect home and garden.

If Michelle Dodds enjoys chilling in a shady yard, that is her business and I will not judge. Myself, I prefer to be basking in my sweet, sunny Tsawwassen back yard and thinking about how lucky we are to reside here.

Outdoor living is good, in my case because in 2014 I was able to cut down a tree.

Development to bring gridlock and then road construction

Editor: Re: Will living in South Delta only be possible for the wealthy?, Community Comment, June 17 ML Burke obviously does not think much of people who suppose that Tsawwassen may have reached or exceeded the limits of responsible development. Which is fine, but for one issue.

The transportation review commissioned by the Century Group in 2013 in connection with the Southlands development points out that the traffic increase resulting from the Official Community Plan

and the Southlands and Tsawwassen First Nation developments will cause seven intersections along 56th Street to gridlock twice a day. This finding is obscurely tabulated in Appendix C to the report; it does not appear in the text of the report.

The high-density, multistorey apartment buildings proposed for the town centre will add traffic to an already gridlocked system.

There comes a point when gridlock interferes with the functioning of the community.

Widening 56th Street and other streets to alleviate

gridlock will require eliminating medians, eliminating sidewalks or expropriating land to relocate them, encroachment on already saturated parking areas and, possibly, the expropriation and demolition of some existing buildings.

All this adds ruination to that which is already proposed, to solve a problem that council should never have allowed to develop in the first place. Richmond, which Burke views with favour, is a byword for traffic congestion. It looks like Tsawwassen will go the same way.

More townhouses are needed in South Delta Editor: Re: Will living in South Delta only be possible for the wealthy?, Community Comment, June 17 I read ML Burke’s column with interest. She wrote: “The family near 47A Avenue... had to change the project to townhouses, like we need more of them.”

As someone who has been looking at townhouses in South Delta for a good year now, I can state that we do not have enough townhouses. Very few come on the market, and of those that do, many are quite old, overpriced and in dire need of updating. Some are in undesirable locations.

Much better deals can

be found in South Surrey, where townhouses are newer and offer more amenities. However, there are those of us that have circles of friends and activities here, so we wish to remain.

So, please take it from me as well as others that, yes, we can do with more townhouses.

Tilbury LNG facility is looking at further expansion BY

At FortisBC, we’ve been proudly serving natural gas to the community of Delta since 1957. Our Tilbury LNG facility has been operating safely since 1971 — helping keep gas rates lower and providing our customers with reliable energy service by delivering stored gas to our system when market prices are traditionally high, like cold winter days.

As a regulated utility, we’re committed to providing the energy our customers need at a reasonable cost. One of the ways we can do that is by looking for new markets for natural gas.

Better utilizing our system year-round helps us to keep gas rates lower for all of our customers.

Today, trucking and marine fleets as well as remote communities are looking to natural gas as

a safe, reliable, lower cost fuel alternative. LNG from Tilbury is enabling these customers to transition away from oil-based energy products such as diesel and other higher emitting fuels.

As many people in Delta are aware, our Tilbury LNG facility is undergoing an expansion to help us serve new domestic customers.

The expanded operations will come online in 2016 and will be powered by the existing electrical system.

We’re also considering a potential additional expansion to the one currently underway. Hawaiian Electric is interested in LNG supplied from Tilbury to help the islands transition off its dependency on imported oil-based power generation.

Leaders there have committed to aggressive renewable energy goals, including a shift to 100 per cent renewables by 2045.

They believe natural gas is

superior to oil for fuel as a bridge to that goal.

Last August, we signed a conditional supply agreement that is still subject to approvals in B.C. and Hawaii.

At this point we’re still working through all of the details of what would be needed for the potential expansion to serve Hawaii, and are conducting early design work. One of the key components of our early planning process is sitting down with our neighbours

in Delta and other stakeholders to share information and gather feedback.

For instance, recently we started very early discussions with elected representatives, city officials, local landowners and community groups about upgrades to the electric transmission lines needed to serve the facility if it’s expanded further. This proposed electrical line would allow us to continue to power Tilbury with clean electricity.

By encouraging early

input from the community and listening to concerns, we’re best able to work together to find the right solutions.

A separate company, WesPac, has also received an export license from the National Energy Board to export LNG from a proposed jetty on the Fraser River adjacent to our Tilbury LNG facility.

If approved, WesPac’s jetty would enable new customers such as Hawaiian Electric to receive LNG

from our facility via barges and small LNG carriers.

Their proposed project will be subject to robust environmental and regulatory reviews, as well as local permitting processes — all of which include opportunities for public input.

Longest day Last Sunday was the longest day of the year, clocking 16 hours, 15 minutes and one second of daylight.

That leaves seven hours, 44 minutes and 59 seconds of darkness. I like the ratio of light to dark.

In the light I find it is easier to see where I am going. The same is true in a spiritual sense. In the Gospel of John, Chapter 8, it is recorded, “Jesus said, ‘I am the light of the world.

Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’”

Even when we feel alone and afraid, figuratively “in the dark,” this longest day, Jesus, is our hope. And even when we lack hope, the reality of Christ’s presence is still real. And when we cannot perceive his pres-

Point Roberts fun run raises some serious cash $2,500 goes to Hannah’s Heroes from 34th annual Jog for a Jug The 34th annual Jog for a Jug in Point Roberts last weekend raised $2,500 for Hannah’s Heroes.

The fun run takes place every year at the Reef Tavern in Point Roberts and is organized by the RunInn Delta. Over 200 runners and walkers lined up for the challenging 11.2-kilometre route around Point Roberts last Saturday.

David Jackson took first place overall in the men’s division with a time of 41:02; Diane Kaltenegger

was the top woman with a time of 45:16.

Every participant that crossed the finish line got a bottle of water form Seabrite of Point Roberts before they got to sip their beer from the Reef. The race was well supported by local businesses that offered tons of draw prizes as well as Muscle Memory and New Balance, the main corporate sponsors.

Next Wednesday marks the country’s 148th birthday and there are several community celebrations planned around Delta to mark the occasion.

Events include: • The Canada Day party gets started in the morning outside the Delta Museum on Delta Street in Ladner.

Hosted by the Delta Museum and Archives Society, the free community event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Highlights include the popular pancake

breakfast, a Canadian flag cake, face painting, giant jenga and giant checkers.

There will also be a scavenger hunt and even more crafts happening inside the museum. The Doghouse Band will be providing the tunes until close. Also, by popular demand, there will be a bouncy castle.

The museum is located at 4858 Delta St. • The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club hosts its annual Canada Day celebration at Diefenbaker Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be free hotdogs

and drinks, birthday cake, entertainment along with balloons and face painting for kids. Diefenbaker Park is located at the corner of 56th Street and 1st Avenue in Tsawwassen.

• Kirkland House holds its annual Canada Day festivities from noon to 4 p.m.

Performances throughout the day will include the Circle of Friends band, including a debut of Ray Hudson’s song about the history of Kirkland House, Tina Hoell as well as the Delta Police Pipe Band.

Family fun to be had in Idaho Former Bitterroot Mountain rail route has become a mountain biker’s paradise BY

A chill settles over my body as the dark tunnel swallows my bike and me.

I pedal hard, pushing for the light at the end of the 2.7-kilometre dungeon and keeping a sharp lookout for deer, moose and elk. The animals are elusive on the day I’m burrowing into the innards of Idaho’s Bitterroot Mountains, but the tunnel’s moisture leaves me a triumphant stripe of mud down my back.

The rugged Bitterroots stretch between Idaho and Montana, and the best way to traverse them is by bike.

The 24-kilometre trail, known as the Route of the Hiawatha, was part of the Milwaukee Railroad, which was built in 1909 to transport cedar logs, and later moved freight and passengers until its bankruptcy in 1977.

Twenty-one years later

the railroad was lifted and the gravel trail, complete with seven massive trestles and 10 tunnels, became a mountain biker’s paradise.

One of the reasons is its gentle downhill grade that demands little if any physical exertion. The slope perfectly accommodates kids as young as five and seniors in their 80s and 90s. Over the course of 90 minutes riders drop 300 metres in altitude and find themselves surrounded by magnificent forests of fir, birch, pine and cedar, with spectacular views from trestles suspended 70 metres above the lush valley floor.

Along the way you pass the grave of a railroad worker who jumped off a moving train to avoid a fire in 1910 and was buried alongside it. Informative signs describe the riotous gambling, drinking, fighting and dancing that took place at the construction camps erected over the three years

History hangs heavy over North Idaho’s Silver Valley, seeping out and informing everything you do. After our ride we stop in Wallace, a small city that grew exponentially when deposits of silver, lead and zinc ores were discovered in the 1800s.

Some miners made a fortune from those claims but others were not as lucky. We venture into one of the latter, the Sierra Silver Mine, where Lenny Hoiland, a 30-year mining veteran, leads our tour.

Walking us into the dark bowels of the mine, he describes the daily chal-

lenges and dangers of hard rock mining. By the end of the tour we wonder out loud why someone would choose such dangerous work.

“I loved it,” he reflects.

“There was camaraderie, a sense of accomplishment and good money working in the mines. If I could, I’d go back in a heartbeat.”

Idaho’s summertime temperatures climb quickly into the high 30s, and with our kids clamoring for a swim we head to Coeur d’Alene, a city located steps from the lake that bears its name. Joining the locals we plunge into its deliciously cool water while around us parasailers soar into the sky and pleasure boats zip through the still water. We dry off on board a cruise of Lake Coeur d’Alene, as the captain delivers a narrative on some of the exquisite waterfront homes we pass.

While we’re impressed with the lake and Coeur

d’Alene’s funky downtown, filled with gift shops and galleries, our kids are after a different area attraction: Silverwood Theme Park.

The largest theme park in the Pacific Northwest, its 165 hectares in nearby Acton are divided into Boulder Beach Water Park, with lazy rivers, waterslides and pools, and Silverwood’s land-based entertainment.

Idaho is known as potato country but those words don’t come close to describing its majestic mountain ranges, exquisite lakes and plethora of outdoor activities. This hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest is full of surprises that keep the whole family engaged, exhilarated and entertained.

Performers aiming to start musical theatre company Tracy Neff and Tony Barton are teaming up to bring Into the Woods to a theatre near you next February.

The idea is the result of a desire to continue their involvement in the community while creating an opportunity for young actors and singers.

“We are starting a theatre company committed to youth and young adults who want a concentrated and pre-professional experience,” says Neff.

With more and more students taking “gap years” before starting post-secondary, Barton and Neff also hope to provide an opportunity for local young adults wanting to continue their theatre involvement and to build their resume as they transition.

“Into the Woods is a great place to start to see if Delta has room for a musical theatre company,” says Barton.

“We are starting with a junior version and we will decide where to take things from there.

“There are little theatre companies springing up all over the Lower Mainland and we want to be one of them.”

Since 1975, the Delta Gymnastics Society’s foundation and focus has always been on youth.

1975-1976

Karoline Cullen began Delta Gymnastics as a Parks and Recreation summer program.

1976-1977

The large response in the summer prompted Kari to develop the program into a year round program. Delta Gymnastics began operating out of the small gym at the Tsawwassen Junior High (now South Delta Secondary School), with over 30 members participating.

Earthwise workshop series set to explore rain gardens Four sessions range from introduction to hands-on

This year’s dry weather may be great for barbecues, but how is it going to impact our water supplies? Earthwise Society’s new Rain Harvest program looks at the sustainability of our water resources and shows homeowners how to create rain gardens to help conserve and protect fresh water supplies.

A rain garden is designed to collect run-off from roofs and driveways and direct it to a landscaped infiltration area where the water can slowly re-enter the ground water. Rain gardens divert pollutants from storm drains and replenish water supplies.

While an individual rain garden might seem like a

small thing, collectively they produce substantial environmental benefits for neighbourhoods.

This summer, Earthwise Society will be offering a series of four workshops on the design and installation of rain gardens for residential landscapes.

The series starts with a free Introduction to Rain Gardens presentation on Thursday, July 2 at 7 p.m.

Come and learn more about this increasingly important topic and find out what can be done.

Sessions on Saturday, July 4 and Thursday, July 9 will cover the basics of designing a rain garden and choosing plants for water conservation. On Saturday,

With second place beginning to slip out of their grasp, the Delta Islanders pulled the trigger on one deal and suggest there are more to come prior to next week’s B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League trading deadline.

After departing with top end talent the past two seasons, the Islanders (12-5-0) are aggressively trying to get better prior to next month’s playoffs. They will need to if they want to avoid a potential semi-final match-up with the powerhouse Coquitlam Adanacs (15-1-0).

A 14-11 home floor loss to Victoria last Saturday leaves the Shamrocks (10-6-0) just four points back in the league standings. The Island squad enjoys a game in hand and has by far the easier remaining schedule.

Delta also has to worry about the New West Salmonbellies (10-6-0).

The teams have a home-and-home series starting on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) in Ladner. They also meet Tuesday at Queen’s Park Arena.

“We could end up fourth if we don’t turn things around a bit,” said Islanders assistant head coach and assistant GM Greg Rennie. “We need to get better and that’s why we are making trades to improve this team.

“We not only want to finish as high as possible but be in a position to have success in the playoffs and be able to challenge a team like Coquitlam.”

Rennie’s focus is shoring up the left-side of his offence.

His first move was sending enforcer Patrick Thornhill to Langley for Bryce Brochu. The Ontario native has 20 goals and 39 points in 11 games but has been in Europe trying out for the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.

He is expected back in town this weekend.

The Islanders have two other pending trades. Both would bring more scoring lefties to the line-up.

South Delta Minor Hockey unveils A1 rep coaches for 2015-16 season Association’s annual pre-season prep camp slated for Aug. 24-28 Preparations are well underway for the coming 2015-16 season, including the South Delta Minor Hockey Association announcing coaches for its rep “A” teams.

Heading the four Storm A1 teams are: Atom — Peter Zed and Jim Scouras; Pee Wee — Yogi Sevejovsky and Chad Dey; Bantam — Ken Priestlay and Tom Garagan; Midget — Lawson Boutilier.

It is a coaching line-up that features two former NHL hockey players and skilled minor hockey coaches with over 50 plus years of collective training experience — one of whom, participated in SDMHA in his youth as a player and has returned to coach in the ‘A’ program for the past four seasons.

Over 700 children and families participate on approximately 50 SDMHA teams, in programs that initiate new players to the game, help them develop new hockey skills, individual character and teamwork, as well as fostering the pursuit of hockey excellence in competitive play at the highest levels. The association also supports

volunteer groups, who operate two tournaments annually, and special events like last year’s Hockey Day in Delta.

SDMHA invites all hockey players — male and female — living within the South Delta community to register for the 2015-16 season as soon as possible to take advantage of the early bird discount before July 15, and to ensure they have a spot for the upcoming season.

All hockey players new to the community, or interested in learning to play the game, can contact Tracey Derrheim, the SDMHA Administrator, directly at info@ southdeltahockey.com to learn more about the registration process and becoming a member of Hockey Canada.
