Tsawwassen man back in berry field after undergoing toe-to-thumb transplant surgery BY

Picking strawberries at Emma Lea Farms this spring had a particular significance for one Tsawwassen man. Peter Harms has always loved picking berries at the Westham Island farm, and in May he dreamed of returning to the fields

as he lay in a hospital bed recovering from toe-to-thumb transplant surgery. It was in 1998 when Harms’ hand was partially amputated in a workplace accident. He completely lost his thumb and index finger from his right hand, as well as portions of the middle and ring fingers. “It was really bad,” Harms said,

adding he underwent seven operations in the days following the accident. At the time, doctors suggested transplanting his toe to replace his missing thumb. However, Harms said he initially declined another surgery as his wife was due to give birth in a few weeks and he knew that recovering from the surgery would be a long process.

“I meant to do it sooner,” he said, but as often happens, life got in the way and his left hand took over as his dominant hand. It wasn’t until two years ago when he was at a hand clinic for an unrelated reason that a physiotherapist urged him to get the surgery. Harms said the therapist See TRANSPLANT page 3

Delta police this week released a video of a motorcyclist caught going more than 100 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit along the South Fraser Perimeter Road. The driver, a 27-year-old Lower Mainland man, was pulled over in April after traffic cops clocked him speeding south along SFPR at 213 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Officers noticed the man was wearing a Go-Pro camera and later watched the footage. The video shows the driver weaving through traffic, including large commercial trucks, while reaching speeds of more than 220 km/h. The motorcycle was impounded and the driver was issued tickets for excessive speeding and driving without due care and attention. The charges resulted in a $483 fine, a seven-day

vehicle impoundment and three driver penalty points. None of the charges were related to the video footage, and were issued following the initial traffic stop. The rider signed a release allowing Delta police to use the footage. - With files from the Vancouver Sun

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary recently presented bursaries to six local students. This year’s recipients of the annual awards are (from left) Hailea Caldwell, Rachel Hislop-Hook, Manpreet Kaur Kooner, Katie Maciel, Denise Evanoff and Isabelle Pasin. To qualify for a bursary, students must be pursuing a career in health care.

TRANSPLANT from page 1 showed him photos of another patient that had a similar operation. “It was not a beautiful picture, but it was functional and she was happy,” he said. So in early May Harms went in for the surgery. In the operation, which took

20 hours to complete, doctors removed his big toe from his right foot and attached it to his hand to replace his missing thumb. Initially the surgery was a success, however on the third day of recovery, the blood vessels in his transplanted thumb went into

spasms. Harms had to be rushed into the operating room where doctors worked for 10 hours to salvage the new digit. After the surgery, the new thumb had to stay warm so the temperature in Harms’ hospital room was kept at 30 degrees Celsius and his hand was kept wrapped and at a balmy 43 degrees.

“For one week I was living in a sauna,” he said, adding he also began hallucinating from the painkillers. In all, Harms spent four weeks in hospital recovering and during those long days he said he often dreamed of picking berries, a favourite pastime in the spring and summer. “That’s basically what

kept me alive, ‘I want to go strawberry picking,’” he said. And just one week after being released from hospital, Harms was back at Emma Lea Farms eager to put his new thumb to work. “Picking berries is just where I belong,” he said, adding it also acts as good rehabilitation as he learns to use his new thumb.

Animated passenger gets car pulled over

No argument taking place, but police do issue roadside suspension to driver after he admits using cocaine The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • June 23, Highway 17 and 56th Street: Police

stopped a vehicle where it appeared the driver was having an argument with his passenger. Investigation revealed the passenger was actually talking on a cell phone in an animated manner. While speaking with the driver, police noticed indicia of drug use and the driver admitted to having recently used cocaine. The suspect was determined to be impaired by drugs and was given a roadside suspension; his license was seized and his vehicle impounded. • June 24, 1 a.m., 5900-

block of 12th Avenue: A vehicle stop revealed the driver was to be served with a one-month prohibition notice. Police served the notice and seized the suspect’s driver’s license. • June 24, 9:13 a.m., 400-block of Kerry Drive: Complainant reported two patio chairs stolen from her backyard. The chairs are described as brown synthetic rattan with green cushions. Area inquiries by police in the area proved

negative. • June 25, 1:17 a.m., 700block of 53rd Street: Police attended the park following a report of a large group of youth yelling and screaming. On arrival most of the youth had dispersed. One youth was found in the bush area and was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. The suspect was uncooperative and the police were unable to locate his home. As a result, the suspect was transported to cells. When the suspect

No alcohol involved. Medical emergency attended but both driver and passenger declined assistance. Vehicle towed from the scene. • June 23, 11:01 a.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported she was unable to get into her vehicle and on investigation found a small hole drilled under the lock cylinder and what appeared to be pry marks on the door. No video surveillance available. File created for insurance purposes. • June 23, 3:39 p.m.,

5100-block of 47th Avenue: Complainant reported he had left his bicycle locked outside the leisure centre and when he returned the bike was missing. The bike is described as a sky blue BMX with black “415” numbers on it, black tires and two black wheel pegs. • June 23, 11:32 p.m., 55B Street and Grove Avenue: Complainant reported six youth were blocking the road and not allowing him to drive past. When he did manage to pass the youth, one of them threw beer bottles at his vehicle. Policed investigated but youth gone on arrival. • June 24, 5:37 p.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Manager of store reported a shoplifter in custody after attempting to steal items. The suspect was being held in custody by the store and police assistance was requested. The suspect was arrested and then released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.

Review confirms officer dismissal The police complaint commissioner has upheld the dismissal of a Delta police officer. On Monday, the Delta Police Department was notified the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner had upheld the dismissal of Const. Felipe Gomes following a review by appointed adjudicator Alan E. Filmer. In January, then chief Jim Cessford, who retired in February, proposed that Gomes be dismissed after he admitted to four allegations of deceit and one of neglect of duty following more than two years of investigation. Under the Police Act, in cases of possible dismissal or reduction in rank officers are entitled to a public hearing or review on the record. The adjudicator’s decision is final and there are no more appeals available to Gomes.

In his decision, Filmer stated, “In my opinion, Constable Gomes is no longer able to fill the role of a police officer. The allegations against him, which have been proven, are very serious and lasting in their impact... I hereby order that Constable Felipe Gomes be dismissed from the Delta Police Department.” “We respect the final decision of the adjudicator in this matter and they reflect the initial recommendation of our discipline authority,” said Chief Neil Dubord. “It is of utmost importance to the Delta Police Department that we all adhere to our core values of honour, integrity, courage and trust; when the personal values of one do not align with the core values upheld by the men and women of the Delta Police Department, appropriate actions must be taken.”

Delta joins rest of region in defeating transit plebiscite

68% of voters here reject proposal to hike sales tax to fund improvements BY

After 10 weeks of voting and another month of counting, the results in the transit plebiscite were released yesterday morning and the answer from voters was a resounding no. Overall, the “no” side registered almost 62 per cent of the vote, easily defeating the “yes” side, which garnered just over 38 per cent. In Delta, voters rejected the idea at a slightly higher rate with the “no” side getting 68 per cent to the “yes” side’s 32 per cent. Tsawwassen First Nation voters also rejected the idea by a 66 to 34 per cent margin. Last year, the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation released its plan to improve transit and transportation in Metro Vancouver. The proposed 0.5 per cent tax hike was expected to generate $250 million annually, money that would be earmarked for transportation improvements identified in a 10year, $7.5 billion plan put together by the region’s mayors. The plan called for a Broadway subway and light rail for Surrey, among much else, but not much for Delta. The ballots went out March 16 and residents had until May 29 to submit their

With limited improvements planned for Delta, it’s no wonder voters roundly rejected the plan put forward by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation. vote. Unlike many other municipalities in the region that actively campaigned for a “yes” vote, Delta took a neutral position. Although Mayor Lois Jackson is a member of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, she continued to voice misgivings about the transparency and structure of TransLink. Noting the transit authority and mayors need to look “futuristically” at transit needs, Jackson said Delta is asking that a direct

bus from South Delta to Downtown Vancouver be restored, a service lost when the Canada Line was added. The B.C. branch of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation, which headed the No TransLink Tax campaign, said Thursday morning the “no” victory is a win for everyone. “This is a tremendous victory for taxpayers, our underdog No TransLink Tax campaign and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation,” said Jordan Bateman, No TransLink Tax spokesperson and CTF B.C. director.

“Our campaign didn’t have millions of taxpayer dollars or fancy CEOs committing their groups to our cause — we had everyday taxpayers who simply believe TransLink wastes too much of our money to be trusted with any more of it. This is a win for all of us.” The Better Transit and Transportation Coalition, which championed the “yes” side, called the results disappointing and said it reinforces the need for urgent, region-wide transit and transportation improvements.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW He’s heard all about it, but now he gets to live it. Neil Dubord, who was sworn in as Delta’s police chief earlier this week, is familiar with the reputation of the department he now heads and the four little words that have a way of separating it from other police forces patrolling the streets of Greater Vancouver. The transplanted Edmontonian by way of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police understands that “no call too small” isn’t just a slogan or some kind of feel-good, but unattainable, goal the mayor has set for the department. From his speech at the ceremony on the municipal hall plaza Monday evening, it appears that Dubord fully realizes those are indeed words to live by in these parts. However, when one of his officers is dispatched to something as sinister as the case of the missing patio chairs (I kid you not, it’s in today’s Crime Beat), you just know the 28-year law enforcement veteran is going to have one of those head-shaking, welcome-to-Delta moments. Having said that, this approach shouldn’t come as too much of a culture shock given Dubord has a history of community policing in Edmonton, which, coincidentally enough, is where his predecessor came from 20 years earlier. And we all know that Jim Cessford was certainly a proponent of the community policing model, making Delta one of the safest places in the process. Despite being in the shadow of a major metropolitan city, Delta maintains many of the characteristics of a small town, particularly in the communities of Ladner and Tsawwassen. OK, so we still must lock our doors, but you know you’re in a pretty safe place when you’re more likely to get a laugh, than a scare, while reading the police blotter. It’s Dubord’s challenge to maintain that sense of security, which is no easy task given all that’s taking place around us. We have come to expect a certain level of service from our police force and a responsiveness to our concerns, no matter how trivial they might seem to others. From the outside, this looks like any other Lower Mainland municipality, but the sensibilities here differ from elsewhere in the region. At Monday’s swearing in ceremony Cessford said Delta hit the lotto when it hired Dubord, which is high praise in itself but carries even more weight given the source of the statement. The retired chief definitely knows of what he speaks, so it stands to reason that we should be collecting our winnings in the years to come.

Making some memories at a wonderful time of the year MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT You would think the month of June this year would go down as a record setter for temperature. Brown lawns, droopy Dahlias and over the top lemonade sales would certainly be indicators. But no, we missed it by a fraction of a degree and 1951 remains the high temperature year for the month that is mostly spring and a little bit summer. Was “global warming” a topic back then? Who knows and who cares. Summer is here for a short time so drink it in and rest assured we will be able to complain about the rain soon enough. I enjoy all of the seasons but it is certainly summer that brings a flood of fond memories of carefree youth. For the past week you have seen it. Rogue gangs of happy kids wandering the streets on bikes with

no worries of time and space. A couple of bucks in your pocket, a ball of some sort and you are good to go for a whole day. I miss those times. I love the menu change that summer presents at our house as well. I am generally a barbecue all year kind of guy, and I enjoy that summer seems to be an automatic portion shrinker. Now, any protein is usually accompanied by a very simple salad and that is fine with me. The heat also ensures the kitchen counter and fridge are stocked with fresh local produce. We have seen early bountiful crops of berries and cherries and it will be a short time before B.C. peaches and nectarines make their way to our local retailers. We have been gulling down these goodies to beat the heat. I recall summer nights when my brothers and I would return home from a long day of Popsicle eating to be treated to ice cream and blueberries for dinner. Sometimes we would just have watermelon. Lots of it. On Sundays, though, there would always be some massive hunk of meat on the squeaky rotisserie. You could hear it from blocks away and you could tell by the wonderful smell when it was

time to come home. Summer means play and fun. I have spent some time prepping the fishing gear and organizing the tackle box. The dock is finally in at Point Roberts and my daughter and I are keen to get down to wonderful Lighthouse Park to waste some time. I am two weeks in to my slopitch season and fully enjoy the warm summer night games with my friends. On a personal note, I have managed to complete a bucket list item. Our league is allowed a number of under 25 kids. My 19year-old daughter is now playing with our team. The other night we were able to play together. ML was playing shortstop and I was playing third because I can’t move. We made a couple of plays together and it was a lot of fun. For me, after 15 years of coaching, 50 years of playing and 19 years of “dadism,” that was a summer night that I have been looking forward to for a long, long time and one I will cherish forever. Have fun out there and create some great memories! Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food.

July 3, 2015 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

TFN is setting an example Editor: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission report is tragic. More than 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children were enrolled in residential schools between 1883 and 1996. The report’s headlines are child abuse and shame, not proud achievement. The intent must surely have been a positive one: starting indigenous peoples along a path toward full participation in the Canadian economy. Tragically, residential schools failed to deliver. The 2010 average aboriginal income was $29,780 compared to $41,052 for non-aboriginal Canadians. In 2014-2015 Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada spent $8.1 billion. With this major

support why are aboriginal people not achieving the economic success enjoyed by other Canadians? I don’t know. Someone needs to discover why and implement a solution. There were 1.4 million people with an indigenous identity in 2010, representing 4.3 per cent of the Canadian population. In 2006, they were only 3.8 per cent. Canada’s economic inequity is growing. Perhaps indigenous people enjoy their life, but at the same time covet wealth they see non-indigenous Canadians realizing? This would be understandable, but achieving such wealth requires change. I commend the courage and initiative of our Tsawwassen First Nation neighbours. They made a

brave decision to forego government support and, like other Canadians, shoulder responsibility for their own future. They seem to be achieving major success, but I have yet to learn how their many leases will translate into jobs and financial support for individual members. Hopefully TFN will serve as a textbook example for other First Nations seeking the success that residential schools failed to deliver. Ed Ries

Sidekick grateful for all the support it’s received as theatre group prepares for its 19th season

Editor: On behalf of the board of directors of the Sidekick Players Club, I would like to thank the community for their continued support of our theatre company. Founded in 1997 by Carroll Lefebvre and having just closed its recordbreaking 18th season, Sidekick is thrilled to announce its 19th season opening with Frederick Knott’s Wait Until Dark,

followed by the Canadian classic Les Belles Soeurs by Michel Tremblay, God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza and closing with Norm Foster’s Looking. This promises to be another blockbuster season. We want to especially thank our partners, the Delta Optimist and the Delta Law Office, and all our patrons. Without your dedicated support, we would have no one to

“play” around with every year. And finally, a huge thank-you to all our volunteers, many of whom give countless hours to every production. Subscriptions for our 19th season are now on sale and you can pick up a form at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Carroll Lefebvre President Sidekick Players Club

Public must have its say

Editor: Re: Tilbury LNG facility is looking at further expansion, June 26 As I listened to television coverage of this issue, I was appalled to hear a company official state that, of course, they couldn’t please everyone. This was in response to concerns from farmers that their livelihood is at stake. It appears he is unaware of the gravity of world hunger and widespread drought already affecting food supply on this continent and others. Farmland needs to be saved and farmers need to be supported in their mission to feed British Columbians. At present, we grow too small a percentage of the food we eat. That trend needs to be reversed and

callous disregard for farmers’ concerns needs to stop. Doug Stout trots out the usual line that the proposed project “...will be subject to robust environmental and regulatory rules...” By now we are very familiar with this claim but we know better. Since Prime Minister Stephen Harper gutted environmental regulations, hidden in an omnibus bill, we know the playing field is not level and the wishes of multinational companies will take precedence over citizens’ needs and farmers’ livelihoods. We can only stop this if we speak out loudly and consistently. Let’s make this a strong election issue. Wilma Haig

Tory support is nothing new Editor: Re: Canadian pride has its price, Murphy’s Law, June 26 Ted Murphy’s cynicism may be allayed if he took the time to consider all the facts. Our Conservative government has been proud to support local cultural activities across Delta for many years. For example, community groups such as the Delta Museum and Archives have, in fact, received almost $5,000 over the past five years to support their Canada Day celebrations. Likewise, the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club has received $6,400 since 2011 to defray the costs of the festivities at

Diefenbaker Park, both of which I am proud to participate in every year. Murphy may also care to note this year’s contribution of $50,000 for the White Spot/Delta Road Race follows a similar investment last year and coincides with that race’s prestigious new accreditation by the International Cycling Union — the only such race in the province. Our government is proud to invest taxpayers’ dollars back into local communities so that we as Canadians may continue to enjoy the privilege of living in the best country in the world. Shifting reality It has happened once again, just as it does every year. The reality of daily routine has shifted. One last day of children in school, the next the freedom of summer. Sleeping in, running free all day, vacation trips, summer camp... it all sounds so good, doesn’t? And the feeling of euphoria lasts for all of a week or two and then we hear it ... “I’m bored, there’s nothing to do!” What is it about this “freedom” that is so intriguing and so fleeting in such a short time frame? Isn’t such a reality shift supposed to hold our excitement, fulfill all our hopes, entertain us endlessly, maybe even give us permission to be self-indulgent for the rest of our lives? It’s not only the anticipation of our child-

hood summers, but regrettably of our often unfulfilled adult dreams. There is certainly a time and place for rest, renewal and a different take on routine but, and there’s always a but, when the primary focus of our reality shift is a self-indulgent, what’s in it for me expectation and attitude, it will inevitably lead to an empty shell of freedom. There is an alternative reality shift that has repeatedly rendered a life giving, transformative kind of freedom. “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure — pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” Luke 6: 38

Artists all set to race

Grand Prix of Art - Delta planned for July 19 in Ladner BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

O

n your mark. Get set. Go! Artists will be racing against the clock in Ladner Village later this month in the first-ever Grand Prix of Art - Delta. The event, presented by the Travellingbrush.com and hosted by Artists in the Village and the Corporation of Delta, takes place Sunday, July 19. Up to 100 artists will be involved part in the plein air painting race. They’ll be given a location somewhere in Ladner Village on the morning of the event. “They have three hours to complete their painting that’s inspired by the location,” says Mark Glavina, who runs an annual Grand Prix of Art event in Steveston. He and Artists in the Village, a non-profit society, are working together to bring the event to Ladner. He says the “timing was perfect” to bring a Grand Prix of Art to another community, noting it will still continue in Steveston as well. Artists are judged on basically three criteria areas - capturing the spirit of the location, the creativity of the artwork and the technical handling of the medium they choose to work in. Artists in the Village president/founder Mary Ann Burrows notes local businesses are supporting the event by sponsoring painting locations. Spots are spread out throughout the village.

Mark Glavina and Artists in the Village’s Mary Ann Burrows are working together to bring a Grand Prix of Art event to Ladner. Artists will race against the clock during the competition, set for July 19 in Ladner Village.

“The last few weeks there’s been a lot of artists practicing in the village,” she says. Once the three hours are up (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), artists will bring their work to the Ladner Community Centre and prepare them for display and adjudication. A lunch for artists and

volunteers, catered by the Dancing Pig restaurant, will be held in Memorial Park and will feature live music. The public will be able to view the paintings, which will be for sale with 20 per cent going to Artists in the Village, at the community centre and also have the opportunity to cast a bal-

lot in the People’s Choice Award. “It’s interesting, in the five years we’ve been doing it in Steveston, not once has the judged winner been the same as the people’s choice,” says Glavina. There will be awards for both adult and youth artists. The awards ceremony

is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. and the exhibition will be open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m. Finalists will also have their work on display at municipal hall for a week, he adds. Organizers are also holding a photo essay contest where photographers are

encouraged to document the entire event and submit five images. To register online visit https://www.eventbrite. ca/e/grand-prix-of-art-delta2015-tickets-16231576081. For more information, visit www.artistsinthevillage.com or the group’s Facebook page.

July 4th festivities planned in Point Roberts

Our neighbours south of the border in Point Roberts will be celebrating American Independence Day tomorrow. A pancake breakfast, hosted by the Point Roberts Emergency Preparedness

Group, is on tap at the community centre on Gulf Road. It goes from 7:30 a.m. until noon. Pancakes, sausage, juice, milk, tea and coffee are on the menu. It costs $5 US or $6 CDN for adults and $3 US (and pos-

sibly $3.50 CDN) for children. Proceeds benefit the local emergency preparedness group. A flag raising ceremony with the B.C. colour guard takes place at the community centre at 9:30 a.m.

The Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce is hosting a parade once again. People are welcome to join the parade right up until the noon start time, notes chamber president Heather McPhee.

The route is the “same as always.” The procession starts at Gulf and Marine, heads east along Gulf and then south on Tyee to APA. Musician and actor Jim Byrnes will serve as the grand marshal while the

Vancouver Police Pipe Band will be there as well. Activities after the parade include a barbecue, kids games and a beer garden, along with fireworks in the evening, hosted by the Pier Restaurant at the marina.

Getting beautiful skin at any age Concerns for women include brown spots and redness p.j. wren

Well on Your Way I have been obsessed with skincare my entire life. I had horrible acne as a teenager and very dull skin in my 20s, so I’ve spent the better part of my adult life researching and experimenting with skincare products. Now, fast-forward to my mid-40s and I am both thankful that I have been on a strict skincare regime, as well as terrified because I see my skin changing, yet again. Thank you, Father Time. You suck. I started my skincare regime about 14 years ago with the help of Dr. Marcia Fleming and her amazing team at Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre in North Delta. I knew I needed a

professional because what I had been doing — cherrypicking drugstore-brand products — was not helping or improving my skin. Fleming has been practicing in the Vancouver area for 14 years and she is the medical director of both the Delta Laser and Skin Care Centre and the Lougheed Laser Centre. She keeps on top of the constant change in the field of aesthetic medicine and she is also a clinical preceptor (that’s a fancy word for saying she also teaches other physicians the fine art of aesthetic medicine). In other words, she knows her stuff. I interviewed Fleming for this column to get the lowdown on what we should be doing with our skincare regime with each passing decade and how we can get beautiful skin, at any age. In our 40s, our focus should be on adding mois-

ture to our skin and rebuilding the collagen that is slowly diminishing as we age. Two products Fleming recommends to promote collagen production are vitamin C and retinol. In addition, we need to start protecting our skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, minimum SPF 30, all year round. (Yes, all year, not just on sunny and bright days, or when travelling to a hot climate. Sunscreen 365 days a year, baby.) In our 50s, the same rules as in our 40s apply (adding moisture to the skin, sunscreen and boosting collagen), with a shift now leaning towards adding growth factors and peptides to your skincare regime. Growth factors strengthen the skin, repair aging skin and protect the future of aging skin. But, alas, just like a cheap Coach knockoff, not all growth factors

are equal. To make a difference in the skin, you need a pharmaceutical product, compared to a cosmeceutical like those found in drugstores. Cosmeceuticals will not have the magical active ingredients needed for serious skin improvement. These skin-changing, fabulous products can be only be obtained by a doctor at a medi-spa. Peptides (especially ones that contain retinol, antioxidants and specialized DNArepairing enzymes) work around the clock to help minimize UV oxidation damage and uneven pigmentation while restoring skin function and elasticity. In our 60s, Fleming recommends higher concentrations of active ingredients such as retinol and growth factors with enzymes to prevent and repair photodamaged skin. These products will

radically reduce wrinkles, uneven skin tone, fine lines, rough textures and sagging skin. And, of course, as always, sunscreen 365 days a year. One of the biggest skincare concerns women have (and the initial reason I walked into Fleming’s clinic) are brown spots, otherwise known as age spots, and redness. No woman likes these! They are the equivalent to that person in front of us at the checkout who has the exact change, somewhere in the bottom of their purse, and wants to count it slowly and methodically to the cashier. Thankfully for us, though, we can easily do something about the spots and redness, and as for that person in front of us, just don’t use the express checkout. That is their natural habitat, the “under nine items or less” lane.

There are two services you can have to treat spots and redness that work brilliantly. The first, IPL/photorejuvenation, will address age spots, redness and small broken capillaries (like those little buggers around the nose) in as few as three to five treatments. I have had IPL treatment a lot through the years and it does work, and with no downtime. The second service is Fraxel or Venus Viva (newest on the market). These treatments work by resurfacing the skin, which in turn creates new collagen production, as well evens out the tone and texture, tightens enlarged pores and helps with pigmentation (aka age spots). PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer who specializes in over-40 fitness and health and who wore sunscreen while writing this column.

Photos explore BC and Beyond

Travel photographers and writers Karen Pacheco and Karoline Cullen have joined forces to present BC and Beyond, a travel photography exhibit at the Tsawwassen Library. It opened June 30 and will be on view until Aug. 31. Pacheco’s interest in the visual arts began with media studies at SFU. Her passion for travel photography was sealed when given a Pentax SP 1000 before a year’s trip to Europe, the Middle East and Africa in the mid-1970s. Her career as an educator ended with an assignment in Shenzhen, China, allowing for Asian travel opportunities. Since then, she has devoted her time to photography and freelance writing. Her recent travels include the Maritimes, Hawaii and U.S. national parks. Pacheco is a member of the Delta Photo Club, B.C. Association of Travel Writers and

Canadian Association for Photographic Art. Several of her images have won awards. Her work can be viewed at: http://northohana.zenfolio.com. Photography has been a life long passion for Cullen. Even when she was an instructor in the kinesiology department of Langara, the managing director for Canadian Holographic Developments, or founder and coach of Delta Gymnastics, photography was always an interest. Now retired from all that, she concentrates on photography. Living part-time on Galiano Island, she loves photographing the abundant nature there. She continues to support Delta Gymnastics by donating photos of gymnasts and events. Her travels have spanned the globe and she is a

Lower Mainland Cup for rep B fastpitch teams took place across Greater Vancouver last weekend. The co-host ’99 South Delta Invaders (above) captured the U16 tourney at Brandrith Park, while the South Delta ’01 Invaders (left) were in action at the U14 event in Richmond.

Invader teams bat 1.000 for provincials South Delta rep B girls fastpitch program will have all 7 age group entries headed to B.C. tourneys this month For the second straight year, South Delta Invaders will be represented in a big way at upcoming provincial tournaments. The rep “B” girls fastpitch program has qualified every one of its teams for the various age group championships taking place around B.C. the weekend of July 17-19. The trips were earned via winning District 15 playdowns or receiving wildcard invitations. The Invaders 2003 and 2004 teams will be making the short trip to Steveston-London

Park in Richmond for the U12B Provincial Championships. The powerhouse Invaders 2001 squad is heading to Maple Ridge to battle B.C.’s best at the U14B tourney. The 1999 Invaders will be looking to continue their dominant campaign at the U16B championships at the Cloverdale Athletic Park. They will be joined by the 2000 Invaders who earned a last minute invite. The teams finished first and third respective-

ly at last weekend’s U16 Lower Mainland Cup held at Brandrith Park. The Invaders 1997 and 1998 teams are making their way to Nanaimo for the U18B championships. The ’98 Invaders earned provincial bronze last summer at the U16 level in Prince George. Meanwhile, South Delta Fastpitch will also be represented at the U16C and U19C Provincial Championships this weekend in Kamloops and West Kelowna respectively.

Stingy ’99 Invaders win U16 Lower Mainland Cup South Delta ’99 Invaders tuned up for the upcoming U16B Provincial Championships by capturing the Lower Mainland Cup on home turf. The Lower Mainland Girls Softball Committee organizes and runs league play for teams from Vancouver to Chilliwack. The Lower Mainland Cup culminates the schedule with age group tournaments hosted by a variety of associations.

The ’99 Invaders got to enjoy home field advantage with the U16 tourney taking place at Brandrith Park in Tsawwassen. The event was divided into Gold and Silver pools, based on the regular season standings. The co-hosts relied on strong defensive play to go unbeaten in round-robin play with wins over Ridge Meadows Rage (5-1), Nanaimo ’99 Diamonds (2-1), Vancouver Wildcats (2-1) and

the Langley ’99 Extreme (2-1). Meanwhile, the 2000 Invaders placed fifth in the preliminary standings. A tight 5-4 win over Vancouver sent the ’99 Invaders to the championship game against Nanaimo. The teams were locked in a pitching duel through four scoreless innings when South Delta finally broke the deadlock on a sacrifice bunt — in route to a 2-0 win and the gold medal.

Proving they will be a major force at the U16 level next season, the 2000 Invaders, were edged by Nanaimo in the semi-finals, then defeated Vancouver to earn the bronze medal. The ’99 Invaders are at Softball City this weekend for the Canadian Open Fastpitch Tournament, then turn its attention to preparing for the provincials, slated for July 17-19 in Cloverdale.

Islanders remain in logjam entering final weekend BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

It may take some digging through the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League rule book late Sunday night to learn who exactly the Delta Islanders will be facing in next week’s playoffs. A battle for the final three positions became even more unclear after the Islanders and New West Salmonbellies played to a 6-6 overtime tie on Tuesday night at Queen’s Park Arena. The result left Delta, New West and the Victoria Shamrocks deadlocked with 12-6-1 records. Each team

has two games remaining. The Shamrocks seem certain to nail down second place with only a home-andhome series against the 513-1 Port Coquitlam Saints standing in their way. The Islanders were slated to play the 5-11-3 Langley Thunder on Thursday night, then close out the season Sunday (7 p.m.) at home against the powerhouse Coquitlam Adanacs (18-10). The Salmonbellies have to deal with the Adanacs on on Friday, then the last place Burnaby Lakers on Sunday. Head-to-head meetings is the first tiebreaker.

However, the Islanders and Bellies split their three games (1-1-1). That prompted an email from head coach Greg Rennie on Wednesday to league commissioner Ken Wood asking what would the next tiebreaker be. Delta’s 9-4 win over New West back in early May might provide the difference. “It looks like goals for (in the three-game series) would be looked at next and that would be us,” said Rennie, who has all but conceded second place to Victoria. “We just want to be going into Sunday’s game knowing exactly what

our situation is.” The Islanders looked destined for a fourth place finish until Spencer Bromley came out of a timeout and fired home the equalizer Tuesday with just 19 seconds remaining in the nonsudden death overtime period. New West had extended the game by scoring twice late in the third, then added a power play goal to start overtime. Islanders’ Ryland Hood was outstanding in goal

with 49 saves. His counterpart from Ontario — Kevin Orleman — was equally impressive with 44 stops. Should Delta face the Shamrocks, the best-of-five semi-final series would start next Saturday in the provincial capital, before shifting to Ladner the following afternoon. The Islanders took two of three games from Victoria this season. Boxla bits… Thanks to a pair of wins last week, the Delta

Intermediate “A” Islanders (4-8-0) look like they have done enough to qualify for the provincial playoffs. Delta has five games remaining, including Saturday in Nanaimo as the locals look to at least secure the seventh seed for a bestof-three provincial qualifying series. That would mean a match-up with second place PoCo — a team Delta has played tough in a pair of losses (17-16, 10-9).
