It’s a beehive of activity as the massive Tsawwassen Mills shopping complex takes shape. Hundreds of construction workers from many different trades have erected the buildings that will eventually house the 1.2 million-square-foot regional shopping centre that will change the face of retail in the Lower Mainland. The Ivanhoé Cambridge project, based on the company’s huge
CrossIron Mills mall outside of Calgary and Vaughan Mills in the Greater Toronto area, is located at the Tsawwassen First Nation, just off Highway 17A and 52nd Street. Director of development Jeff Brown gave the Optimist a tour of the new facility this week, saying a project of such size is certainly complex, but they have the experience of what it takes to build them. Having 200 stores, Tsawwassen Mills will be mostly a fashionoriented mall with a mix of outlet

and other stores, but also a wide range of other products and services to enhance the shoppers’ experience. “The success of the Mills has been because we’ve been able to attract a really good mix of tenants. They can be the larger retailer that’s national but also the smaller regional and even local. They’ve done really well,” Brown said. Surrounded by new roads that will provide different points of entry, the buildings housing the
16 anchors on the outside have gone up with work also underway on the interior. The biggest of the anchors is a Bass Pro Shop at 145,000 square feet. The outdoor recreation giant will not only be selling merchandise but will also have a big aquarium, a boat repair facility, restaurant as well as a bowling alley with extended hours. That building is beginning to resemble a huge hunting or fishing lodge. Bass Pro is to open next spring but all the other stores are sched-
uled to open at the same time in October 2016. The various sections of the mall will have special themes, including a Coast Salish area with First Nation art, and between each neighbourhood there are transition zones. The neighborhood closest to Bass Pro will have sports retailers including some that will be making their first appearance in this province. Within that area of See MILLS page 3

Plan won’t collect dust, Delta says There are many ways to connect with the Optimist, both online and through social media.
South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy has both short- and long-term goals BY
an actual action plan” that has short- and long-term goals and won’t be “a document sitting on the shelf.” Saying time is of the essence and that a special mayor’s committee will help oversee the strategy and its many parts, Mayor Lois Jackson said the group would begin meeting in September. “I’m very happy that we’ve come to realize that we can do something and we must do something,”
Jackson said. Construction is well underway for the two shopping centres. Located at Highway 17 and 52nd Street, Ivanhoe Cambridge’s Tsawwassen Mills will include 1.2 million square feet of retail, while the adjacent Property Development Group’s Tsawwassen Commons will have 550,000-square-feet of outdoor retail. The shopping complex will be only slightly smaller in overall square
footage than Burnaby’s Metrotown. Tsawwassen Mills will have 16 anchors with a mix of premium fashion brands, factory outlets, restaurants and other retailers as well as a 1,100-seat food court. The development will be modeled on the CrossIron Mills outside of Calgary and Vaughan Mills in Greater Toronto. Tsawwassen Commons will have several national big-box stores and many
smaller chain retailers, restaurants and financial services. Some of the confirmed tenants include Walmart, Rona, Canadian Tire and Petsmart. The consultant’s report noted the primary trade area for Tsawwassen Commons is within a seven-minute drive, which translates to all of South Delta. The mall anticipates 70 per cent of sales volumes from the area, putting it in direct competition with existing retailers in Ladner and Tsawwassen. The report outlines the forecasted sales decrease of various types of businesses, listing home centres, hardware and garden stores among the hardest hit at a 20 per cent loss with a recovery time estimated at more than 10 years. Supermarkets could see a decrease of up to 10 per cent with a recovery time about four years. The report explains the principles of creating strong town centres that will keep businesses thriving, including compelling storefront designs as well as convenient and accessible environments with a mix of stores and public realms that attract and retain people.
The mall structure was designed with flexibility in mind in case future store renovations are undertaken including walls being moved. Brown noted all the retailers will have the opportunity to take over the final building and custom design of their spaces once the initial construction is complete. While it will still be a while for fixtures and finishes, things have gone a long way with most of the
electrical and service pipes installed, as well as some of the parking lot which will eventually have over 6,500 spaces. Talks are taking place with TransLink about increasing the frequency of service, but the company also plans to start its own shuttle service from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal and is looking at shuttles from elsewhere. “We do a large tourist trade at these Mills shopping centres. We have a full-time tourism manager that we will create for this
project, on site working in the shopping centre,” Brown said. Tsawwassen Mills will have a workforce of well over 3,000 people once completed. As far as how many customers are expected to go through the doors, Brown noted CrossIron Mills, which is already undergoing an expansion, has about nine million customers annually. Bass Pro is the only confirmed tenant here but more tenant news is coming in the next few weeks. Brown added it will be
quite an experience just to enjoy a drink at one of the restaurants at either side of one of the entrances, enjoying the artwork, surrounding landscape and comings and goings of shoppers. Meanwhile, the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons shopping mall, comprising about 550,000 square feet, is also expected to fully open by next fall. A Property Development Group project, it will house such retailers as Rona, Canadian Tire and Walmart. Construction of that mall is still at the pre-load phase.

It’s not going to be a document with great ideas that collects dust on a shelf. That was the pledge made by civic politicians and staff at municipal hall last Monday during discussion on the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy. It’s a lengthy report full of recommendations on how the business communities of Ladner and Tsawwassen can survive when two mega malls open at the Tsawwassen First Nation next year. Requiring a combined effort from Delta, business owners, commercial property owners and the various business organizations, the action plan would see a transformation of not only the look of both business districts but also how they are marketed. Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, went over a consultant’s report that broke down the business districts of both communities into several precincts, explaining what changes would be best suited for each specific area. He stressed the strategy “is

Port, feds announce shore power for Deltaport Deltaport is aiming to get a little greener. MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Robin Silvester, Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO, Wednesday announced funding for the installation of shore power facilities for container ships at Deltaport and Vancouver’s Centerm. The facilities are expected to be operation by the end of March 2017.
Shore power reduces emission by allowing vessels to turn off the diesel engines and draw power from the electrical grid while in port. The federal government’s Shore Power Technology for Ports program and Port Metro Vancouver are splitting the $12-million price tag for the project. The Deltaport project is expected to cost $4.97 mil-
lion. “We are proud to be investing in shore power at Port Metro Vancouver’s Centerm and Deltaport container terminals,” Findlay said in making the announcement. “Federal initiatives such as the Shore Power Technology for Ports Program will not only help the environment and improve our health, but will also position British

Extensive area patrols by police proved negative for the suspect. • July 14, 7:39 p.m., 56th Street: Border officers detained a male with a driving prohibition attempting to cross the border into
Canada driving his friend’s vehicle. Police attended and the suspect was arrested. Subsequently, the vehicle was impounded for seven days and the suspect was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. • July 14, 9 p.m., 2A Avenue: While visiting a friend the complainant left his bicycle outside the house. On leaving, the complainant found the bicycle had been tampered with and his wallet, house keys, and car keys had been stolen from a bag on the back of the bike. The wallet contained bank cards and driver’s license. Complainant advised to immediately cancel all bank cards, disable vehicle locks, and change house locks. Ladner • July 13, 10:18 a.m., Ladner Trunk Road & 64th Street: A citizen reported the license plate number of vehicle where the driver threw out a cigarette butt. The owner can claim on identification at Police Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Ladner, 604-946-4411. • July 14, 8:30 a.m., Mountain View Blvd & Harvest Drive: Police responded to a collision at the intersection causing extensive damage to both vehicles. Both drivers stated they were unaware of the other vehicle when they entered the intersection. The vehicles were towed from the scene. File forwarded to ICBC who will determine liability and fault. • July 14, 4:16 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road & Arthur Drive: A vehicle changed lanes approaching a red light and in the process rear ended another vehicle. The offending vehicle’s driver then panicked and fled the scene.
Police were provided with the license number of the vehicle. The suspect was located by police and admitted to the incident. He was served with a ticket for failing to remain at the scene of a collision. Collision reports provided to both drivers. • July 15, 7:48 a.m., Ferry Road: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his 2005 Dodge Ram quad cab pickup was stolen from in front of his residence. Police provided the complainant with a file number as required by the credit card companies.
Roundtable tackles gang violence
The mayors of Delta and Surrey met with federal politicians this week to discuss combating gang-related crime in the community. Federal public safety minister Steven Blaney was in North Delta Tuesday to meet with Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Delta Mayor Lois Jackson and Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner. “The level of gang-related violence we have seen over the last several months is unacceptable to me, as Mayor of the Corporation of Delta,
as well as to the people of Delta,” Jackson said. “I would like to thank ministers Blaney and Findlay for their continued efforts on this file. I will work tirelessly to ensure that we get this problem under control in the shortest time frame possible.” Delta police and Surrey RCMP also attended the meeting, as well as several community-based crime prevention groups. “Our government is taking action to support the fight against gang-related
violence,” Blaney said. “Earlier this year, the Harper government committed to provided 100 additional RCMP members to the City of Surrey to help fight against gangrelated violence.” Since April 33 of the 100 promised RCMP officers have arrived. Delta and Surrey have been dealing with a rash of gang-related shootings near the Surrey-North Delta border in the last several months. There have been more than a dozen since the beginning of March.

Harlequin Rabbit, Brown and Tan, Female Bunny, (Approximately 6 months old) Marie and her sister Michelle were abandoned with 3 other small animals at a rural home in Delta. Marie and Michelle came to us as a young bonded pair of suspected sisters that would love to find a home together. Although they had a troublesome start to life both bunnies seem to be well handled and took to shelter life without missing a hop! We suspect they are New Zealand rabbits which grow to about 12 lbs and live anywhere from 4-10 years. Rabbits eat fresh greens (kale, lettuce, ect) and must have access to hay at all times. Do you have room for these two sweet girls in your home? These girls will be available for adoption after they are spayed and tattooed.

New Westminster also has a social planner.” Noting there is a real issue when it comes to child vulnerability at schools, Coun. Heather King concurred there is a need for a social planner, adding Delta should look at what other communities are doing. Coun. Robert Campbell said people may be not aware of or under utilizing social agencies, so having a person who can direct people to the right resources could be helpful. Also saying Delta should look at having a social planner, Coun. Sylvia Bishop said the mega malls coming to the Tsawwassen First Nation could attract people who are in need. She said the staff report’s contention that the municipality doesn’t have the same level of social problems as some other municipalities may be true, but only for now. “The pressures on our social agencies are already so tight that I think that elastic band is going to snap,” Bishop said. Noting that Delta at one point did have someone who served as a social planner, Mayor Lois Jackson agreed with the rest of

New home a nod to the past TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW I was in church every day this week! Same thing last week. And the week before. Before you start thinking confessions, funerals or anything of the sort, let me explain that we’ve re-purposed what was once the home of Ladner Baptist Church into the new headquarters of the Delta Optimist. Although our previous office in the Whitford Building across from the Delta Museum was conveniently located, it lacked the street front presence we desired and had been without since vacating a Ladner Trunk Road building a decade earlier. We looked around for new digs for a while, but the pickings were slim enough that nothing jumped out to compel a move. That began to change when I happened to run into Steve Knoblauch at a public function. I had met Knoblauch when his company, RAM Construction, undertook the restoration and renovation of Ladner United Church, a project Rev. Jim Short and his congregation absolutely rave about and with good reason. I casually told Knoblauch we were in search of a new space and he replied how he would soon be looking for a tenant for the church building he was in the process of renovating. I mentioned the conversation to publisher Alvin Brouwer and general manager Dave Hamilton, both of whom thought it would be pretty neat if a business that’s been around for 93 years could be housed in a building that has stood for over a century. One thing led to another and before you know it, Knoblauch was adding a mezzanine to provide enough space to accommodate all members of the Optimist staff. We officially moved in on the first Friday of this month and haven’t looked back. As was to be expected, the building restoration was done beautifully. When people now step inside the little white church at the corner of 47A Avenue and Delta Street, I can hear them ooh and ahh from my second-storey perch (the acoustics are very good in here). The heritage character has been expertly preserved through hardwood floors, stained glass windows, wainscoting and more. Visitors invariably remark that we’re lucky to be able to work in such surroundings. They’re certainly correct, but it’s also heartening, given the number of heritage buildings that have either been demolished or are on the clock, that a structure that dates all the way back to 1902 is thriving in its most recent incarnation. These buildings not only connect us to the past and add character to the neighbourhood, but they can still serve a worthy purpose.

COMMUNITY COMMENT “Water, water, every where, and all the boards did shrink; water, water, every where, nor any drop to drink.” This famous line from Coleridge’s’ Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner speaks to the irony of the sailors need for drinking water while sailing on the vast ocean. Although desalination and distillation techniques have been around forever, major desalination plants are not yet mainstream. As technology improves costs will lower and it is probably a forgone conclusion that business will eventually figure this important equation out. “I water” anyone? With stage three water restrictions in place here on the “wet coast” there is also some irony. Technically we live in a rain forest. Really though, the past few months we have been living in just a forest. A tinder dry forest. We go through a lot of water.
Each person in British Columbia uses about 350 litres of water a day. Thirty per cent of this total is from flushing the toilet and another 30 per cent comes from bathing and washing. Most new toilets use only six liters per flush, which shaves off an astounding 14 litres per flush from older models, which, if tallied over the course of a year, would save a staggering 250,000 litres per toilet. Canada’s personal water use is second only to the United States in the developed world and only shows that we are incredibly wasteful. Nothing to be very proud of here. Closer to home, Delta was featured on the Global 6 o’clock news this week. Our bylaw enforcement officers have one of the highest ticket-to-warning ratios in Metro Vancouver for enforcing sprinkling violations. Our officers have issued 250 warnings but have also written 40 $400 tickets to illegal sprinklers in our midst who are now affectionately known as “grassholes.” In contrast, Vancouver has 14 enforcement officers on the case and has issued a whopping 1,400 warnings but only 35 tickets at $250 a pop. You would figure that Mayor Moonbeam would be all over this

one in his sustainable city cause. I am glad that we are working hard to comply here in Delta. Reservoirs are down to 69 per cent, which doesn’t seem overly scary, but I suppose that if this spell of dry weather continues other complications could arise. If you are growing your own veggies it is a challenge to be mindful of plant needs while ensuring you are not over watering. On the large-scale operations in our midst, farmers are making best efforts to keep our local crops fed. Nothing is perfect in farming and farmers water when they can even though the daytime water canons lose almost half the water to evaporation on these incredibly hot days. When you are driving around or walking your dog you may have noticed those homes whose lawns have been magically immune to the drought. It may be that they have installed special surface layer aquifers or something. Probably not. The cultural obsession with a green lawn can be put to rest. In fact, lawns can be put to rest. Not the greatest use of land when we consider that it takes more than a city block to grow enough food to feed one person for the year. Innovate and don’t lawn obsess because in reality, brown is the new green.

Government review needed Delta should take over ambulance
Editor: The Delta Police Association not only provides a valuable service to its membership but also to the public interest in calling for a government review of the decision by the Criminal Justice Branch to initially charge Cst. MacWilliams with second degree murder while acting in the performance of his duties as a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team. That the branch subsequently stayed the charge almost three years after the tragic event gives rise to the disturbing inference that Cst. MacWilliams was
charged not on the basis of compelling evidence that could prove the allegation beyond reasonable doubt but for some other (improper) purpose. On the facts available there is an overwhelming public interest for the government to address this inference by way of disclosing what new evidence that was not available at the time the initial charge was laid suddenly became available for consideration. In the absence of a substantive response supported by objectively-discernable facts, it’s reasonable to infer that it was not the new “available evidence”
that resulted in the stay of proceedings but rather the inexcusably-belated realization (most likely on the basis of dispassionate second-thought) that the initial charge resulted from misplaced political expediency as opposed to any legal or public-interest analysis associated with the administration of justice; which calls for not just a government review but also for at least an apology if not compensation to the aggrieved and blameless Cst. MacWilliams who most likely is a victim of an egregious abuse of process.

Kudos for Grand Prix of Art
Editor: We would like to pay homage to the members of Artists In The Village Society for bringing to our community the Grand Prix of Art – Delta on Sunday, July 12th. This community orientated event, gave we the citizens, the opportunity to watch many artists work under a three-hour time limit to turn blank canvases into very recognizable scenes that are part of our community. We then had the opportunity to view all the finished products and to purchase them if desired. As well we would like to recognize and
thank Mary Ann Burrows and the 50+ volunteers who made this event possible. Not withstanding the importance of financial contribution to events and causes, writing a cheque is relatively easy. Selfless giving of your precious time and effort for the sole reward of contributing to the betterment of your community in our opinion is priceless. We look forward to the Artists In The Village Society’s next event. Thank you for your contribution to our community. Howie and Jan McLennan

Editor: There seems to be a lot of controversy with who should run the ambulance service in Delta. Why doesn’t the mayor, along with the fire chief, take over thee ambulance service for this area.
This would stop all the controversy. In the university area, the ambulance service was run by the fire department for nine years and there was no controversy. Robert W. Rowland Retired fire chief, University Endowment Lands

Teen heading to Camp Got2Go BY
DAVE WILLIS

This month will mark the first time Tsawwassen teen Christina Coburn will be heading to an overnight summer camp away from her family. “I’m really excited, I’m not nervous at all,” said Coburn, 14. She’ll be attending the week-long Camp Got2Go, which is put on by Crohn’s and Colitis Canada with support from Janssen Inc., in Bragg Creek, Alberta. She leaves Sunday. She was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when she was 10. When she was first diagnosed she wasn’t able to do a lot of activities, was feeling really tired, had to go to the bathroom a lot and her stomach hurt quite a bit,
she said. Coburn started a special diet (no dairy, sugar, wheat and starch) in January, 2014, which has helped a lot, she explained. The upcoming camp will include lots of fun activities, she said. Some examples are a rope course, climbing walls, swimming, river rafting, volleyball and archery, she said. Her father Graham said that in addition to a positive camp experience, Christina will also get to spend time with other teens who suffer from Crohn’s or colitis. The Crohn’s and Colitis Canada website notes that symptoms of Crohn’s, which inflames the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, often include abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weight loss and lack of energy.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church
St. David’s Anglican Church
A fond farewell Adios, adieu, good-bye. All three expressions have the same literal meaning. ‘God be with you’ is what I would like to express in my last message to you. My last Sunday at St. David’s will be Aug. 16. Commencing Oct. 1 of this year I will serve the community of St. Cuthbert’s in North Delta. I am so thankful to have served this community of South Delta since arriving with my family in 2002 and for the opportunity to contribute to this column. There have been many relationships forged and much fruit borne from our common life of worship and service. I have valued my relationships with other church leaders, and our work together has been very satisfying. At the end of each service at KinVillage we sing, “God be With
You (‘till we meet again)” and that is the tune going through my head as I write. I am happy to know about so many of the ways the churches serve others in Jesus’ name, putting feet to ‘God be with you’, and I am curious about how the churches in North Delta express the life of Christ in mission and service. I close with an Irish blessing reflecting my mother’s ancestry: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Good-bye for now.

The annual Jog for the Bog will be held at Westview Park Sunday. Organizers moved the run due to the recent closures of Delta Nature Reserve and Watershed Park because of the fire hazard situation. Burns Bog Conservation Society operations and development manager Beverley Bly notes the run has been held at Westview in previous years and both the 5km and 10km options are still available. There will be a yoga warm-up, cheerleaders and bagpiper to lead
the runners off. There will also be exhibitors, live music, including Circle of Friends and a Bollywood group, and a pancake breakfast ($5 for non-runners) at the park. Awards for the runners will also be given out. Bly notes there will also be draw prizes at the event. Westview Park is located at 6500 Westview Drive in North Delta. To register (5km is $45 and 10km is $50) visit www.burnsbog. org/jog/ or call 604-572-0373. On Sunday registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the run is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

These include a giant slip ‘n’ slide, Euro bungee, bouncy castle, carnival games and more. Also available by donation will be popcorn, snow cones and a barbecue concession. “The Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen was the founder of the outdoor movie nights in our community and Rotary is pleased to now become host to one of the movie nights for this summer,” said James Latheron, Rotarian and event chair. A wildflower wonderland in Sun Peaks BY
CHRIS MILLIKAN
Optimist contributor
A
get-away to B.C.’s interior introduces us to Sun Peaks in summer where comfortable lodgings in the heart of the village make a perfect base camp for alpine hiking. Nestling amid three mountains, the charming town centre conjures thoughts of fairytale villages in Austria’s Alps. Pastel three-story buildings embrace a winding, brickpaved mall. Decorative trimmings, window boxes filled with red geraniums and simple signage embellishes facades. Like our inn, many boast balconies. Arcades open onto specialty shops, boutiques, galleries and cafés with al fresco seating. Luscious ham and tomato crepes for breakfast on one such patio kick off our first morning. Ready for high adventure, we pick up lift tickets from guest services. Over at Sunburst Chairlift, we meet Mayor Al Raine and Olympian, (and now
Senator), Nancy Greene Raine, residents here since 1995. Today, they are our hospitable trail guides. Hardy hikers often start out from the village. However, a thrill in itself, the chairlift makes the more than 1,800-meter elevation gain much easier for most. It launches us over forested hillsides and into the Shuswap Highlands. Below us, mountain bikers snake downward through purple fireweed. Green valleys stretch far beyond the tree line. Deposited at Mid Mountain station, Nancy smiles, “Now we’re right on wildflower doorsteps!” From here hikers of most abilities can continue along trails ranging from simple strolls to challenging climbs. Colour-coded pocket maps outline sixteen interconnecting possibilities, looping through 35 kilometers. “We’ll start out along Vista Trail, a moderate route that’ll take us to Top of the World and back in about four-hours,” Nancy explains.

Hiking steadily upward amid meadows drenched with wildflowers.
Al points out, “Like many of our trails, this one follows former cattle and deer paths.” We sight brilliant Indian paintbrush, tiger lilies, fireweed and lupines. “Just you wait...the best is yet to come,” Nancy grins. “From mid-July to mid-August, wildflowers carpet summer meadows. This year’s bumper crop bloomed early due to June’s rains and high temperatures.”
During B.C.’s August long weekend, the Alpine Blossom Festival celebrates this annual phenomenon with music, activities and special events. A storyboard overlooking the valley tells us that Sun Peaks’ was originally developed in 1961 as Tod Mountain — named for John Tod, Hudson’s Bay Company’s chief fur trader in the 1840s. Its chairlift was then North America’s longest, though few other
amenities existed. Breathing hard in unaccustomed altitude, we make our way steadily toward Whyte Bowl. Our efforts are rewarded as the trail opens onto colour-splashed slopes. In the distance, a majestic antlered stag materializes, surveys his surroundings and nonchalantly saunters into lower flowerfilled meadows. Ablaze with colour, the mountainside ahead features thousands of columbine, larkspur, lupines, Columbia lilies and Indian paintbrush, drenching sloped meadows in purple, red, yellow and pink. Juniper Ridge becomes the high point of our amazing hike. Sitting amid the bedazzling wildflowers, time seems suspended. Back in the village, we thank the Raines for introducing us to Sun Peak’s breathtaking wildflowers. Scrumptious patio dinners cap a day filled with extraordinary natural beauty. Inspired to hike to Tod Lake the next day, we hop the chairlift back to Mid
Mountain. Alert for markers as we follow the map, our self-guided expedition starts along a service road. Soon switch backing up Gil’s Trail, we pause often for the panoramic views. Here along the mountain’s northeast slope, scenic spectacles envelope us at every turn. Walking poles steady our upward tramp; at times, the steep inclines challenge our resolve. Rest stops allow close-up studies of fuzzy white pussy toes, orange hawkweed and sub-alpine daisies. Eventually leveling off, the narrow footpath takes us through flower-filled meadows and restful glades. Located at 1995 meters, Tod Lake fills us with wonder and accomplishment. We made it! Filled up with picture postcard scenery, we head on back. Already widely known as a winter wonderland, hiking at Sun Peaks in summer reveals equally stunning vistas of wildflowers in all their seasonal glory. Go! South talent helps Jays make playoffs B.C. Premier Baseball League team reaches post-season for first time since 2010, facing Victoria BY

A solid contingent from the south has helped the North Delta Blue Jays return to the B.C. Premier Baseball League playoffs for the first time since 2010. The storied franchise, celebrating its 20th season, has featured some of the best talent to ever come out of B.C. including Major League players Justin Moreau, Jeff Francis and Ladner’s own James Paxton. The Blue Jays have typically attracted top talent from the south region of the municipality and this year is no exception. Veteran Clint Taylor has been joined by first-year players Mackenzie Marquis, Alex Davis, Marc Ashford and Logan Newman. All of them helped the Blue Jays junior team capture the provincial championship last summer. With just two returning players, the Blue Jays survived a hectic finish to their season to land in seventh place with a 21-23 record. That sets up a best-of-three series this weekend with second place finisher Victoria Eagles (31-13) in the provincial capital. The winner advances to the final four championship series. North Delta was in a dogfight to make the playoffs until earning some much needed breathing room with a four game sweep of the fifth place Okanagan Athletics at Mackie Park. “That was absolutely huge for us,” said head coach Brad O’Hara. “We had a light schedule at the start of the season and had to play a lot of baseball at the end of it, including eight games over six days. It’s the first time in my three years we have

Mackenzie Marquis reaches for the ball at second base during a recent four-game series against the Okanagan Athletics at Mackie Park. The Ladner native led the league in hitting with a .400 average. swept them and the timing couldn’t have been better. “We’re very happy to be back in the playoffs and the way the season has progressed so far. A lot of these boys tasted success with the junior team and have brought that here.” The Jays lost three of four games to the Eagles in league play but O’Hara is confident his team will challenge the Island powerhouse.
Daniel Gosselin will get the start in the opener and beat Victoria 2-0 with a complete game gem back on June 20. Hard-throwing Tyler Hoefer will get the call in the second game Saturday. The 17-year-old North Delta native will be playing for B.C. at the Toronto Blue Jays hosted Tournament 12 showcase in September at Rogers Centre. He
will also be joined by Stewart on the B.C. roster for next month’s Canada Cup in Saskatoon. Underage catcher Noah Or will be in B.C. colours at the Western Canada Games. Marquis has enjoyed a standout season at the plate, leading the entire league in hitting with a .400 average. In limited action, Taylor batted .368.
Adanacs edge Islanders to open junior “A” finals Delta Islanders went toe-to-toe with the heavily favoured six-time defending champs to open the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship series on Wednesday night. Cole Shafer’s second goal of the game with 3:57 remaining gave the hometown Coquitlam Adanacs a 9-8 victory over the Islanders. The series resumes on Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) at
the Ladner Leisure Centre. After falling behind 4-0 midway through the opening period, Delta came storming back in the middle stanza and the Adanacs took a 7-6 lead into the final 20 minutes. Twice, Chase Fraser put the visitors on even terms before Shafer notched the winner. Tre LeClaire, who was named league rookie-of-the-
year earlier in the day, also had a pair of goals. Jordan Gilles, Evan Messenger, Spencer Bromley and Brad Hoffman had the others. Ryland Hood was spectacular in net, making 51 saves. Coquitlam had dominated Delta in the regular season, winning all three meetings, including a 26-6 romp on July 5. The Adanacs have lost just one game all year.
