Drivers get a failing grade near schools Police issue 90 tickets and many warnings BY

the last several weeks learning a whole new way of life.
Delta police are giving many local drivers a failing grade when it comes to back-to-school safety. During the first two weeks of the school year, the department’s traffic section held a back-toschool enforcement and awareness campaign. “We were astonished to see that a great number of the offending drivers were actually parents dropping off their children and who were clearly aware of the school zone requirements,” said Sgt. Mike Scholz. The campaign targeted all schools in Delta with officers providing a visible presence. They were there to remind drivers that school is now back in session and that school zone speed limits of 30 km/h are in effect from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on school days. Over the nine days of the campaign, officers issued more than 90 violation tickets and gave out a significant number of verbal warnings. “Our officers heard excuses about ignorance of the school zone speed limits, and even several from area residents who said they were unaware that there was even a school zone in their area,” Scholz said. He added one driver that was pulled over for speeding in a school zone argued with the officer by saying, “But I was only going 50.”

Family in need of help

A long-time Tsawwassen family is reaching out for help as it deals with a difficult situation. On Feb. 13, John Filthuth woke up paralyzed from the waist down. He was initially taken to Delta Hospital and transferred to Vancouver General Hospital a few days later. He underwent a battery of tests and was examined by the best neuroscience team in Canada, but the doctors could not find anything significant, said daughter Jessica Filthuth.
He was diagnosed with idiopathic transverse myelitis — an unexplained inflammation of the spinal cord. The doctors could tell the family that John had suffered a series of mini strokes, and possibly a heart attack; he had multiple lesions on his spinal cord and his kidneys were failing. People who have suffered a neurological injury, can often have difficulty swallowing. After about two weeks in the hospital, John choked, vomited and stopped breathing. “It is a miracle he survived,” Jessica said. “No one knows truly

how long he was without oxygen before the nurses found him.” He spent the next seven days in a coma on life support. When he woke up, his lungs were so damaged he was unable to breath on his own and had to undergo an emergency tracheotomy. John spent the next four months in intensive care, overcoming many setbacks, including bleeding ulcers, an abdominal aortic aneurysm, multiple bouts of pneumonia and infections. After six months he was strong enough to be transferred to G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre where the 67-year-old has spent

Delta’s police chief says the municipality is a little city with big city risks, and it’s dealing with those risks that keeps him up at night. In a speech at a Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday, Neil Dubord listed a number of factors affecting the community, including its role as a transportation hub, major developments on the way that will bring more people and traffic, and the fact the area is in a “red zone,” which means there is the potential for major damage in the event of a natural disaster. “When I talk about what keeps me up at night, this is it,” Dubord told the crowd. He said the department has a 94 per cent satisfaction rate, something that he’s never seen in his policing career, but that could go down the drain in a matter of minutes in the event of a major catastrophe. He said the department’s no-call-too-small mandate helps maintain the public’s trust in police. “It allows us to put a small deposit every day in that bank called public confidence,” he said, adding

to Oct. 2 when he will be transferred to Delta Hospital, allowing the family to make the changes and repairs at home, or find a new home that would allow for the modifications. In an effort to raise the money needed for the modifications, the family started an online fundraiser at www.gofundme.com/ mj2khwzw, which has so far raised more than $6,600. “After this seven-month journey, I honestly have no idea what the future will bring, but I certainly remain hopeful,” Jessica said.
DRIVERS from page 1 The campaign also targeted safe driving and dropoff habits for parents taking children to school, a common issue in many reports to police. Drivers weren’t the only ones being singled out as officers also kept an eye on pedestrians, reminding them to make sure they stay visible and to remove earphones. With autumn here, Scholz has another reminder for motorists: “With the

weather making a turn from summer to fall, visibility and road conditions worsen as the days get shorter and the rain sets in. We would like to remind all drivers to once again slow down and take an extra few seconds to look for pedestrians and other vehicles at intersections.” As the school year continues, the department’s traffic section is committed to ongoing enforcement in school zones.

becoming bigger concerns. Dubord said the department can do three things to help mitigate some of the big city risks. “I think we need to be intelligence led and evidenced based,” he said. Police across the province have access to PRIME, a crime database, and the department can use that to analyze local crime trends and deploy officers accordingly. “It’s about having the right people at the right place at the right time,” he said. The department needs to continue with its community-based policing model, Dubord said, and continue to strengthen partnerships with businesses, community groups and the public. And that means maintaining the no-call-too-small policy. Thirdly, he said, the department has a role in keeping transportation moving, adding he can’t see any other area of the Lower Mainland that is as important to the transportation network as Delta. “It’s very important that it is our job to keep our roads safe,” he said, adding road safety is a large part of future planning for the department.

Enrollment is up again for French immersion More than 2,000 Delta students now in program BY

French immersion continues to be a favourite choice for many parents that enroll their kids in Delta’s public school system. Preliminary enrollment figures for the new school year show Delta has roughly 2,050 students registered in French immersion, which is about 13 per cent of the student population and is a slight increase from the year before. About 1,330 students are enrolled in elementary schools with another 720 in secondary schools. The number of students enrolled has grown steadily in recent years, up 150 from 2010. Delta was highlighted in a report released this month by Canadian Parents for French, which stated that province-wide, French

South Delta is one of two Delta secondary schools to offer French immersion. immersion enrollment has been increasing for 17 consecutive years. As of the 2014/15 school year, there were more than 50,000 students in French immersion in the province, or just over nine per cent of B.C’s public school enrollment. The report found during the same school year, just over 31 per cent of students in the province were taught French through the basic core program. The report also noted that enrollment in Delta’s French immersion program increased over the past six years even though overall student enrollment in Delta decreased by 817 students. “We believe French programs are popular in Delta because they are widely recognized by parents as providing young students with the tools and experiences that will enrich their lives and help them prepare for the future,” said Patti Holm, president of Canadian Parents for
French B.C. & Yukon. Asked why so many parents want to enroll their kids, Christine Carriou, the Delta district’s modern languages coordinator, said, “Parents understand the value that comes with knowing the French language and with the process of learning in another language. “Speaking French opens so many doors for our students — scholarships, study and travel opportunities, excellent career prospects, and the ability to learn other languages more easily. Learning a new language is also tremendously beneficial for cognitive development, where bilingualism is known to enhance reasoning and problem-solving abilities.” In Delta, the process to enroll in French Immersion begins in January with parent information events. Application forms are due at the beginning of February.

Police to standby when the contractor returns to pick up tools. • Sept. 15, 4:19 p.m., 5700-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainants observed two youth stealing approximately $30 of candy and drinks from the store and gave chase. One of the youth was located by police and transported home to their parents. The second youth was brought into the police station by a
parent in order to speak to officers. The youth were warned about the potential consequences of their behaviour and the store was reimbursed. • Sept. 16, 12:19 a.m., 3600-block of Highway 17: Officer conducting speed enforcement pulled over a vehicle observed travelling at 125 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The driver provided an expired driver’s license. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speeding and no driver’s license. The vehicle was impounded. • Sept. 16, 6:15 p.m., 2600-block of 64th Street: Complainant reported that while parked at the dike access their vehicle was broken into sometime between 10 a.m. and noon. The rear window of the vehicle was smashed and a laptop was stolen from inside. • Sept. 19, 4:47 p.m., 5700-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported a possibly impaired driver who was swerving and crossing the lines. Officers located the vehicle parked and unoccupied but identified a male in the area as the driver. The male was administered a roadside screening test that resulted in a “Fail” reading. He was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and a violation ticket for failing to produce a driver’s license. The vehicle was impounded.

Richmond man killed following stand-off at casino BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
A coroner’s inquest has been scheduled into a fatal shooting involving a Delta officer almost three years ago. The B.C. Coroners Service this week announced a public inquiry into the death of Mehrdad Bayrami. The 48-year-old was shot in November 2012 following an armed standoff with police outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster. Delta police Const. Jordan MacWilliams, a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team at the time, was one of many officers responding to the incident, which started in the early morning hours of Nov. 8 after Bayrami got into an altercation with an exgirlfriend. Officers were locked in a stand-off with the man for five hours and MacWilliams was assigned to the role of lethal overwatch for his team. In that

MacWilliams has claimed he had a reasonable fear that Bayrami would fire his weapon at police, which prompted him to fire his own weapon. Bayrami, a Richmond resident, was hit and died in hospital 10 days later. MacWilliams was initially charged with seconddegree murder following an Independent Investigations Office investigation, however, the Criminal Justice
Branch announced in July that it was staying the charges. MacWilliams is also facing a civil suit launched by Bayrami’s daughter, who maintains her father was shot as he walked backwards away from police with his arms at his sides. The coroner’s inquest, which will include a presiding coroner and a jury, is scheduled to start in early February 2016. After hearing evidence related to Bayrami’s death, the jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.

Delta Hospital Foundation to honour Delta Agricultural Society at the 2015 Moonlight Gala presented by MK Delta Lands Group Delta Hospital Foundation is excited to announce that on Saturday, November 7th at the 17th Annual Moonlight Gala, the Delta Agricultural Society will be honoured for their services to the community.
Founded in 1888 by a group of local farmers, the Delta Agricultural Society was established to primarily assist in the improvement of farming practices, land cultivation, and livestock breeding in Delta.
This acknowledgement, presented by Tribute Sponsor Port Metro Vancouver, will recognize the Delta Agricultural Society for the significant contributions, commitment and generosity to both leadership and philanthropy that they have demonstrated towards Delta Hospital and within the community.
The Society has since become a major supporter of the wider Delta community, donating many millions of dollars to community groups, facilities and projects.
“Our members are proud Delta residents, many of whom come from generations of farming families,” says Peter Guichon, President of the Delta Agricultural Society. “The hospital plays an important role in our community, and many of us have relied on, and been touched by the care provided. We have been only too happy to support the Foundation over the years, and we’re honoured to receive this recognition.”
“The Delta Agricultural Society is such a big part of the rich history that we have here in Delta. They have supported and shaped our community, cultivating the culture of leadership and philanthropy that makes Delta so special,” says Veronica Carroll, Executive Director of the Delta Hospital Foundation. “With so many community members attending Gala, it is the perfect opportunity for us all to acknowledge the Delta Agricultural Society for their generosity. We look forward to seeing everyone come out in support on the night!”
The 17th Annual Moonlight Gala presented by MK Delta Lands Group, will be the first major event to be hosted at the brand new Tsawwassen Springs. The venue will be transformed into a Whimsical Wonderland for a fantastic night of entertainment in support of Delta Hospital.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW History be damned. Or should that be projections be damned? For as long as most people around here can remember, this area has been represented at the federal level by those occupying the furthest right place on the political spectrum. From Tom Siddon and Stan Wilbee to John Cummins and Kerry-Lynne Findlay, this lineage dates all the way back to the 1970s. Electoral support for these candidates has been so strong that four years ago Findlay received more votes than all her challengers combined, despite the fact she was a relative unknown in these parts at the time. It built on the convincing victories the popular Cummins had registered for the better part of two decades. It didn’t seem to matter which way the country voted, we consistently leaned to the right, yet projections from a couple of reputable election-focused websites suggest that run could finally come to an end next month. As of earlier this week, ThreeHundredEight.com and Too Close To Call had the Liberals taking the reconfigured riding of Delta, although it should be noted both websites pegged it as a close, three-way race. Too Close To Call gave Findlay just a 17 per cent chance of retaining her seat in Parliament, stating the Vancouver suburbs are likely to be cruel to the Conservatives. These types of sites crunch a whole bunch of data, particularly polling numbers, so it would be foolish to write them off, but what they’re showing here would be a shift for the ages given historical voting patterns and the fact that just four years ago Findlay was more than 30 points clear of her closest challenger. The drop in support for the Conservatives across the country will undoubtedly hurt the minister of national revenue this time around and a change in riding boundaries that has swapped part of Richmond for North Delta likely didn’t do Findlay any favours either, but are those factors, and others, sufficient to erase the substantial margin she enjoyed in 2011? I mean, she was almost 40 points ahead of the Liberal candidate last time. I realize every election is different and the bloom on Stephen Harper and the governing Conservatives isn’t as colourful as when they formed a majority four years ago, but they’re still as good a bet as any party to capture the most seats come Oct. 19. If that’s the case, it’s hard to believe the country could have a Conservative government but the right wing bastion of Delta isn’t represented by a Tory MP.
Housing choices growing but more work needs to be done MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT There was a story in this paper last week that suggested KinVillage will be attempting to add more beds and rooms for expanded care for seniors in our neighbourhood. This, of course, can only be a good thing. My mother-in-law is fortunate to be a resident of Abbeyfield here in Tsawwassen but will soon have to make yet another housing transition in her life. She has gone from single detached home to townhouse, to condo, to apartment and is now in the category of independent living at Abbeyfield. Fraser Health does not necessarily place loved ones in need of care in facilities close to family and caregivers. We obviously want to keep “Nana” here so she is in proximity to family and community amenities. If given the opportunity, a person should be able to live their
lifecycle in their own community if they desire. In the article it was also suggested that Kin were in discussions with the Corporation of Delta regarding the expansion of its facilities and hinted that it might also be tied in to changes to Winskill Park. When I look at the footprint of KinVillage as it relates to the geography of the park, I can only see one area where expansion could go. Doobie smokers beware. You might have to pack up your disks and your six-packs and move somewhere else. The Winskill Frisbee golf park may be in danger. It would make sense for Delta, the KinVillage board of directors and a developer partner to utilize this land for expansion for senior care. I would be sorry to see it go. It has been a major dog walking route for me for many years. Perhaps the course could be moved to Boundary Bay. A links style Frisbee golf course! That probably wouldn’t sit well with the Pacific Flyway crowd though. Housing variety is critical, not just for those in need of care, but for empty nesters, couples and young families. The Canadian dream of the bungalow with the white picket fence is really just

that... a dream. A report last week from Vancity notes a housing crisis is looming. In the report, it is noted that 48 per cent of family income is needed to pay for housing in Metro Vancouver, which is a whopping 16 per cent above the amount recommended by Canada Mortgage and Housing. There is huge shortage of twoand three-bedroom townhomes for young families moving up from one-bedroom condominiums. On the flip side, empty nesters have little choice to downsize here in Delta. Most that I know have been moving to White Rock and South Surrey where there are far more housing choices. Thankfully after many years of turmoil around land use in our neck of the woods, developments in process and those on the shortterm horizon will fill some of the need. Planners and politicians need to be more assertive in identifying zoning opportunities in area plans. I think that Northgate, Tsawwassen Springs, TFN housing and the Southlands will allow us to consider upsizing and downsizing opportunities in our own community. There is still lots to do.

Voter short on palatable options
Editor: As a new Canadian, I intend to vote Oct. 19 for certain. Meanwhile, while out of the country on vacation I missed a key article in the Sept. 12 Economist from UK entitled Canada’s role in the world: Strong, proud and free-riding. In it the paper reported how Canada’s foreign aid for development has dropped 27 per cent the past seven years so we rank
even lower than Italy and France in that metric. What has happened to Canada as the “honest broker” in international affairs? Indeed, the bellwether concept of “honest broker” may determine the current election. While away, some 300 folks attended an all-candidates meeting in Ladner, and the sitting MP from the PCs saw fit to boycott it. The Liberals, for their part, have been a dubious choice
from the get-go given their leader’s pre-condition for all his approved candidates across the land to be proabortion; no personal conscience allowed under his watch, thanks. Of the Big Three, that leaves the NDP that demonstrates ever-escalating tax-and-spend inclinations, which is decidedly sketchy policy in uncertain economic times. Alas, I am starting to wonder whimsically
whether a write-in vote for the Rhinoceros Party might be in order. The Rhinos’ original “party to party until victory” tongue-in-cheek slogan might just turn out to be the most rational response, all things considered. Still, a Green Party protest vote against Big Oil in favour of WWS (wind, water, solar) development supports is surely worth contemplating, too. W. Baird Blackstone
Strategic voting make sense but it’s the Liberals that Deltans should get behind to unseat Conservative
Editor: Re: Strategic voters should look to the NDP if they hope to unseat incumbent in new Delta riding, letter to the editor, Sept. 18 I agree with Inger Kam’s call to Delta voters to vote strategically in this next federal election. I strongly disagree, however, with her recommendation to vote NDP. Credible poll trackers, including CBC’s Eric Grenier (threehundredeight.com) and Bryan Breguet (tooclosetocall. ca) consistently report a two-way race in Delta
between the Liberals and the Conservatives. While the results of the 2011 election are of historic interest, the circumstances of this election four years later are much different, particularly in relation to the electoral fortunes of the Liberal Party under Justin Trudeau’s rejuvenating leadership. Delta voters are lucky that their one very strong option locally to defeat the Conservative incumbent, Kerry Lynne Findlay, and her leader, Stephen Harper, is Carla Qualtrough. As a successful human rights lawyer who has worked
at the federal and provincial levels of government, Qualtrough has the education and professional experience to represent this riding well. But most important to me, she has the humanity and integrity to serve Deltans respectfully and, together with a pretty impressive Liberal team, give my country back to forward-thinking, progressive Canadians. I call on Kam to reexamine her strategic vote. If we measure the value of a strategic vote by its likelihood to unseat a
Don’t blindly follow an unknown when Conservative MP has delivered millions to benefit her constituents
Editor: Re: Conservatives have done their best to avoid non-partisan Canadians, letter to the editor, Sept. 16 Liberal candidate Carla Qualtrough wrote, “My work and education have prepared me to serve you skillfully. My personal drive and tenacity mean
Oh Behave!
that I will work tirelessly in Ottawa to deliver results for Delta.” What work experience? What education? How skillfully? What personal drive? What tenacity? To deliver what for Delta? These are questions any sensible Canadian might ask before blindly following an unknown. Perhaps
this Liberal does have something positive to offer but no one will know what by her letter. Incidentally, the Conservative MP for Delta has “delivered” $440 million in Delta, much of which touches most Deltans. Shirley M. Cruickshank

Pipeline better option than trucks
Editor: Re: Mayor wants fuel trucks off highways, Sept. 23 While I have interacted with and held Delta Mayor Lois Jackson in high regard for many years as chair of Metro Vancouver, she has apparently been misled by the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation’s propaganda about taking thousands of trucks off the road. Obviously she was not informed that a pipeline from Cherry Point would accomplish the same goal. Instead, she seems to favour jet fuel transport up the Fraser River past the bio-diverse Reifel Bird Sanctuary, thereby endangering one of the world’s top heritage rivers, its wildlife, abundant migra-

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then
good solution for most people. This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.
Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, Connect Hearing is currently looking they can no longer properly amplify to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want speech and dampen loud noises. quiet sounds are no longer naturally amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a

Water restrictions eased for 2nd time this month
Lawn sprinkling now permitted three times per week Metro Vancouver returned to Stage 1 water restrictions this week, meaning lawn sprinkling can now take place three times a week. The recent rain has helped restore reservoirs to well within acceptable levels for a sustained period of time, and cooler temperatures have reduced water consumption throughout the region to seasonal averages. The Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam reservoirs have stabilized at approximately 60 per cent of their storage capacity, which is typical for this time of year. Metro Vancouver’s three alpine lakes, which provide water to the reservoirs in the summer, have also been replenished by the recent rains. Even-numbered addresses can use lawn sprinklers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4 to 9 a.m., while odd-numbered addresses can do so during the same time on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The restrictions are expected to remain in effect
until Oct. 15. Due to an unseasonably dry summer, Metro Vancouver implemented Stage 3 water restrictions in July, which prohibited lawn sprinkling and car washing. That was pared back to Stage 2 earlier this month, which allowed lawn sprinkling once a week.
“We’ve only implemented Stage 3 water use restrictions once before in 2003, and there have been many important lessons learned during the past several months,” Carol Mason
“We’ve only implemented Stage 3 water use restrictions once before in 2003, and there have been many important lessons learned during the past several months,” said Carol Mason, commissioner of the Greater Vancouver
Water District and Metro Vancouver’s CAO. ”I would like to acknowledge the collective efforts of everyone who helped us to achieve our goal of reducing water consumption during drought conditions region-wide to below 1.2 billion litres per day.” Commencing this fall, Metro Vancouver will evaluate the Water Shortage Response Plan and consider the input received this summer from residents, businesses and member municipalities. “This year has proven to be a real wake-up call and may be the new norm going forward,” said Darrell Mussatto, chair of Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee. “The adjustments we made prove our region’s ability to dramatically reduce water consumption by eliminating unnecessary outdoor use for aesthetic purposes.” Thanks to lawn sprinkling regulations, there has been a 27 per cent decline in per-capita water use in the region since 1993.

Delta voters will be finding out over the next few days where they have to vote in next month’s federal election. Millions of personalized Voter Information Cards (VICs) have been mailed out to registered voters’ homes this week and more will be sent over the coming days. VICs contain important personalized polling location information. Unlike provincial or municipal elections where voters can go to any polling station, voters in the federal election have to go to the polling station assigned to them. VICs identify each voter’s poll number and location for election day, Oct 19. The cards also have information on locations for advanced polling days - Thanksgiving long weekend, Oct. 9 to 12, from
noon to 8 p.m. Elections Canada says when voters receive their VIC, it’s a good idea to check the information. Voters that haven’t received their VIC by Oct. 1 or whose card shows the wrong address can register or update their address online. They can also drop by a local Elections Canada office. To locate your local Elections Canada office, you can use the Voter Information Service tool on the Elections Canada home page at www.elections.ca. Voters can also vote any time up until Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at an Elections Canada office using a special ballot. To get more information about voting, including ID requirements, Elections Canada offices are open seven days a week and have staff to answer questions. Voters can also call 1-800463-6868.
Terry
Domestic Short Hair, Black and White, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 1 year old) Terry came to us as a trapped feral that has since turned quite friendly. Terry lived outdoors and was being fed by his finder who was then able to trap him when Terry bit his own tongue and needed medical assistance. He was going to be returned to the finder’s home after he got all fixed up but he decided that perhaps he’d rather be a friendly inside cat instead! Terry doesn’t seem to mind other cats in the shelter and can be seen hanging out with other cats in our communal room. We feel Terry would do best in a home with no dog but may do well with older children who understand cat body language. Terry likely will be fine as an indoor cat in his new home as long as there’s a bright window for him to stare out and watch the world go by. Can Terry get comfortable in your home?

Power and authority Upon thinking through the idea of practical living in Christian Community, I have been reflecting with my congregation about how the wisdom of this world and the wisdom of scripture calls us to consider two very different perspectives. Power and authority, for instance can have very different implications depending on which perspective (world view) we hold. I was reminded through a brief commentary that after “Jesus… gave the disciples power and authority… he then sent them out to preach and heal.”(Luke 9: 1-6) They were not empowered for the purposes of selfish gain or to lord it over others. We so often see this from personal/professional lives all the way through to geo-political interactions. Rather, they were empowered to preach Good News
and heal. When Jesus spoke of power and authority he did something unheard of. Jesus wedded power and authority with love and humility. We do not truly have one without the other. Having just watched the Pope address the U.S. Congress, it was fascinating to hear how his power and authority were infused with a pastoral presence even as he named the huge challenges facing our modern societies. His challenge to rise to uphold the common good, to attend to the world environment, to lift up the downtrodden, to honor the family, etc. was not spoken in a scolding manner but rather called forward a capacity, honoured a history infused with such people, and blessed the present decision makers to do what they have been empowered to do.

briefs “Our goal is to provide our customers with an unparalleled connected home experience. This speed increase will give families and businesses more than enough capacity to meet growing demand for generations to come,” Goodfellow said. *** The Mainland Milk Producers Association this week announced that Fraser Valley dairy farmers will be donating $100,000 worth of milk to food banks. The donation will provide fresh milk for up to a year for up to 485 families plus Surrey’s Tiny Bundles program. Families will receive jugs of fresh 2% milk and the Tiny Bundles program will receive jugs of homogenized and 1% milk for toddlers and expectant mothers. The one-year commitment will facilitate longterm planning and scheduling for the food banks to ensure the milk goes out to families that need it most. The Mainland Milk Producers Association is made up of about 350 dairy farmers who farm between Chilliwack and Delta.

Matcon gives Reach a boost
Reach Foundation director Tanya Corbet, executive director Renie D’Aquila and fundraising manager Joni Wright were thrilled to receive a $20,000 contribution from Matcon Civil Constructors earlier this month. Lance Perkins and Adam Whitworth of Matcon presented the donation that will go toward the construction of a new Ladner facility for Reach Child and Youth Development Society. “Social responsibility is at the heart of Matcon Civil Constructors,” said
D’Aquila, “and we are so grateful for their commitment to our Building for Children Together campaign. Once complete, the new Reach centre will serve generations to come as place of learning and belonging for children with special needs and their families.” To date, almost $4 million has been raised from individual and community donors to build a resource centre in the heart of Ladner. The proposed 20,000-square-foot building will replace the current
Ladner Kinsmen House on 47th Avenue and allow Reach to provide new and enhanced programs for children with special needs. A new centre will increase the number of children served and make Reach services more visible and easily accessible to families. Reach Child and Youth Development Society has been providing services to children and their families since 1959. Over 1,000 children and their families benefit from Reach’s services on an annual basis.

Minority Report comes to Ladner
SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE
Film crews were on location in Ladner last week filming scenes for Minority Report, a new Fox series. The show, which is also airing on Global in Canada, is a sequel to Steven Spielberg’s 2002 movie, which was based on the 1956 short story, The Minority Report. The show, which is set in 2065 Washington, D.C., 11 years after the movie, was filming at Sharkey’s Seafood Bar and Grille and the Sundance Inn. It is the first Steven Spielberg-directed movie to be adapted for television.

KinVillage Community Centre is kicking off its fall schedule with two luncheons. Last Friday, more than 120 people enjoyed Gillian Campbell (right) performing her entertaining Klondike Kate show. On Friday, Oct. 23, George Ellenton (left) will do his Frank Sinatra tribute performance. Tickets for the tribute luncheon are on sale now and cost $12 for members and $14 for non-members. Visit KinVillage Community Centre at 5432 – 10th Ave., Tsawwassen, or call 604-943-0225.
Artists in the Village Society will be celebrating its first birthday at a meeting in Ladner later this month. There will be a birthday cake and artist April Lacheur will be speaking. “We are so very pleased with how our first year as a non-profit society went,” says Artists in the Village president/founder MaryAnn Burrows. “We have over 100 members and have had such a wonderful response from the people in the community and support from all of the local businesses has been outstanding.” The recent Grand Prix of ArtDelta, which the society hosted with the Corporation of Delta, was also a big success, she notes. She adds the society plans to continue with its monthly speakers and is planning a Christmas art show as well as holding the Grand Prix again next summer. Burrows also says the society is planning to launch an online art contest featuring local artists in October. The contest will be held on the society’s website, www.artistsinthevillage.com. Exploring Copenhagen on foot BY

enmark’s compact capital is perfect for exploring afoot. Strolling from our hotel past the bustling train station, we soon arrive in Copenhagen’s historic centre. Bronze dragons line lofty City Hall’s terrace. A golden statue above its main entry represents Bishop Absalon, the city’s 12th century founder. Denmark’s beloved writer of children’s tales ‘sits’ on the sidewalk below. A bronze-cast Hans Christian Anderson gazes approvingly toward today’s cyclists whizzing along his namesake boulevard and Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest amusement park. In the age-old shopping district, we encounter Round Tower. King Christian IV built this observatory as part of Copenhagen’s medieval University. A stone bust of Tycho
Brahe recalls his nightly planet study. Nearby, lies Denmark’s oldest royal garden and Rosenborg Castle. Topped with step-gable roofs and lofty greentopped towers, its Dutch Renaissance architecture invites investigation. Two 17th century bronze lions flank the entrance. A storyboard explains that Christian IV created this fairytale castle, where his descendants resided for another hundred years. Rooms exhibit royal artifacts spanning the late 16th to 19th century, including etched glassware, clocks, crockery, royal portraits and Danish landscapes. The small indoor yellowtiled bathroom reveals their modern comfort. On the top floor, the grand reception area features a collection of silver chairs; three silver lions frisk in front of two ornate, gilded thrones. A Danish Coat of Arms embellishes the stucco ceiling. “Long Hall’s wall tap-

estries depict Denmark’s victories against Sweden during the Scania wars,” a docent explains. “Those side reliefs illustrate Frederik IV’s decrees, most notably the serfs’ liberation.” Outside, we sniff around the rose garden where a larger than life statue of dowager Queen Caroline Amalie dwells. Continuing through the main garden and into surrounding neighborhoods, we eventually
arrive at Kastellet, an old fort now one of many city parks. Decorative canons still point seaward. A large memorial honours dockworkers near the busy waterfront. Just beyond, famed Little Mermaid perches on a rock. Perhaps paying homage to Anderson’s most beloved tale, crowds gather, many snapping photos. Further along rises Gefion Fountain, a marble extravaganza.
Here, Goddess Gefion encourages her four transfigured sons, depicted as oxen, to rip off a piece of Sweden. This mythical act produces Zealand, Denmark’s main island. Ahead, dockside buildings reflect Maersk’s longstanding contributions to Denmark. One has windows displaying model vessels of this shipping company. Nearby, Michelangelo’s David fronts redbrick West India Warehouse. Once enclosing slaves, it now celebrates the human body. Inside, the royal cast collection of over 2,000 naked plaster statues and reliefs exhibit worldly artwork from antiquity to the Renaissance. Ambling along the waterfront, we admire the modernistic Opera House, bestowed by Maersk’s owner and Black Diamond, the Royal Danish Library’s extension sparkling with polished black granite. Heritage buildings line Nyhavn Canal.
This charming neighbourhood contains Hans Christian Anderson’s former apartment. At Anderson Pub, we quaff Carlsberg ales, munch ham sandwiches and talk about the Danes’ comprehensive welfare, free university courses and no-cost health care. While paying the bill, I ask, “What makes Denmark’s the happiest place on Earth?” Our waitress laughs. “Definitely the Carlsberg!” Our 11-kilometre loop around Copenhagen encompasses castles, parks, heritage buildings and public art. This cityscape reveals Danes’ proud history and their love of imagination, education, enterprise, community spirit… and good beer. Become a better fat burning machine p.j. wren
Well on Your Way So, you want to burn some fat? That’s absolutely no problem if you are in your teens or 20s, if you have never yo-yo dieted in the past and if you are of the male persuasion. For everyone else, it’s not so easy. Pesky fat is harder to burn as a woman, due to our lower muscle mass, and it gets even harder to burn (no matter what your gender) as we age. Why is that? As we get older our hormone balance shifts in ways that encourages weight gain instead of weight loss. For example, testosterone levels decline in men, and women’s insulin-regulating hormones become less effective. These changes decrease muscle mass, slow down our metabolism, sap our energy, all while increasing our belly fat and our resistance to insulin. In addition, who hasn’t been on a diet before? If you are a woman over the age of 40, I can guarantee there has been some point in your life where you have restricted food to lose weight. Now, if you have done this restriction on a regular basis (otherwise known as yo-yo dieting), then you have really sent your metabolism — and your ability to burn fat — in a free fall. All is not lost, though.
Just recently I released an online course that trains people over the age of 40 on how to burn fat, how to keep it off for good and how to never diet again. Today I want to share with you some insider tips from that course to help you rule your fat too. First, drink water and to be more precise as soon as you get up. We wake up in a dehydrated state and in order to start repairing, and then maintaining, a healthy metabolism you need to drink water. Start your day with at least 12 ounces of water before you eat or that first cup of coffee. Next, change what you are doing in the kitchen and start with the complete elimination of low-fat foods. Fat is not the enemy in your diet. In fact, since the introduction of fat-free foods into the marketplace, we have never been fatter. We need dietary fat. It is an essential nutrient for our body as well as a key component to producing hormones that enhance our youthful qualities. Fat also helps transport vitamins, it promotes healthier skin and it supports a healthy brain. Aim for 35 per cent of your calories from fat, especially if you are over 40, and choose from a variety foods such as olive oil, grape seed oil, canola oil, coconut oil, fatty fish, nuts and seeds, and avocados. These are all monounsaturated and polyunsaturated foods that have a positive effect on the body. The other fat, trans fat, should be avoided at all
costs and is super easy to do if you eat from the perimeter of your grocery store, walking right past the bakery, mind you. As for the final fat out there, saturated, there has been some positive research indicating it is not so unhealthy for us like doctors, nutritionists and health authorities have been warning us. It seems researchers are now casting doubt on those claims that it can cause heart disease, concluding that people who eat lots of saturated fat do not experience more cardiovascular disease than those who eat less. And, finally, the biggest fat booster of them all — add strength training to your weekly workouts. Nothing will burn the fat faster than lean muscle tissue, and strength training is the best way to increase yours. How can you do that on your own? Start a strength training routine, lifting three to four times a week. After about 12 to 16 weeks, start adding more advanced training techniques to continue to see change and growth. Some of these techniques include high intensity interval training, super setting, training to failure, circuit training (my personal fave), Tabata training, drop sets and light to heavy volume training, to name a few. PJ Wren is a personal trainer and writer in the Delta area. Check out her online program, Over 40: Becoming a Fat Burning Machine, at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

DERMAPEN - A revolutionary new breakthrough in skincare Do you have acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, or stretch marks that you’re trying to get rid of? If so, Dermapen is for you. Dermapen is a revolutionary micro-needling device that is designed to tighten, lift and rejuvenate skin, It’s a handheld wand that creates pin dot openings in the skin, which results in the body’s natural response to re-grow and repair the skin by producing collagen. If you are considering Dermapen, here are the facts you should know. DERMAPEN treats several issues The Dermapen is used to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and pigmentation to give you ageless skin. While typically used on the face, the Dermapen is commonly used in places such as the abdomen, neck, and arms, but can be
used anywhere else that you have the aforementioned issue. How long will it take to see results? Results can be seen after the first treatment. However, optimal outcomes are seen after a series of Dermapen treatments as the skin continues to remodel for the next 6-12 months. The benefits gained by enhancing the skin’s collagen and elastin will remain for years. How is Dermapen different from fractional laser? Unlike laser, Dermapen is safe to use on all skin types with less risk of hyper pigmentation and scarring on darker skin
tones. The minimal downtime of Dermapen treatment makes it ideal for busy clients who wish to quickly return to their normal activities. Dermapen is also a cost-effective alternative to higher priced laser treatments. Dermapen is safe and as effective as fractional laser to intense pulsed light (IPL) with a significantly shorter recovery period. Beach Grove Laser Clinic is one of the very first clinics in British Columbia to offer Dermapen. Learn more about Dermapen by calling our clinic at 604.943.9339 or to book a FREE consultation

TO BE DONE, LADY BUG’Z
LIFEST YLE
ASSISTANT
CAN DO IT.
“Anything that you need, we’ll do,” says Anna Erickson, who started Lady Bug’z with partner Mike Alioto three years ago. The initial aim of the business was to help local seniors be able to to live independently longer, as well as make the transition into care home. “We try to keep our seniors in our community living independently,” Erickson says. From care aides and housekeeping to organization, help with running errands or simple companionship, Lady Bug’z Lifestyle Assistant offers a variety of services aimed at helping seniors stay comfortable and safe at home as long as possible. The help is not just for seniors, however, as the couple says Lady Bug’z services are available to anyone who needs a hand. In addition to care aides, housekeeping and organization, and personal assistant services, Lady Bug’z offers yard work and handyman services, home check while you’re away and even help with season preparations, such as decorating for major holidays. It can also take care of vacation and party planning, gardening and has an arsenal of experts in everything from plumbing to a notary public available. “The thing that I heard the most was how difficult it was for some seniors to live on their own and how hard it was to transition,” she says.

ARMSTRONG ELLIOT, Margaret 1931 - 2015
Margaret Armstrong Elliot passed away September 11, 2015 at the Ladner Hospice. Margaret was born in 1931 to John and Mary Armstrong of Eskdale, Cumbria – the eldest of 5 children. Here she attended the local school taught by her Aunt Gladys, then Trinity Hall girls school and then took Fine Art, then Science at King’s College. University led her to a professional career in medical technology and teaching high school biology. She lived in the UK, California and Alberta before settling in Vancouver, where she worked with the Canadian Red Cross. She joined the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) in 1990. Margaret was awarded their top recognition as a Full Signature Member of the Federation. She was also a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, CSPWC, and the North West Watercolor Society in Seattle, NWWS. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Deirdre (Kevin Armstrong), Catherine (Craig Bourget), and her grandchildren Ava and Ruby. Also her sister Barbara Armstrong (Cheryl McLeod) and in the UK by brother Hubert Armstrong and sister Helen (Eddie Woodall) and cherished extended family members and long time friends. Margaret travelled the world gathering images to inspire her artwork, yet she loved her home and garden. Here she was especially happy entertaining friends and family and will always be remembered by her big laugh. She was dedicated to her family and well respected by her colleagues and in her community. Her final achievement is a book of the Armstrong family and its background in Cumbria. She wrote this history for her granddaughters Ava and Ruby. The book “Native In Eskdale: Another Country” is now being published. A Celebration of Life is being planned at the South Delta Artist Guild Long House on October 25th.

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
