Taking bias out of policing

Delta Police Department breaking ground with launch of training program JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Police Department has rolled out a new training program for all its employees aimed at helping reduce those unconscious biases that creep into everyday life. Chief Neil Dubord said the program is aimed at reducing the gap between the community and police and building public trust in police. The idea came out of former Attorney General Wally Oppal’s inquiry into the missing and murdered women on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. In his final report, released in 2012, Oppal concluded that bias can operate in a variety of ways, often through unintentional acts or failures to act.

“Law enforcement agencies mirror the society they serve,” Oppal wrote. “Thus the historic and continuing racism within Canadian society is likely to be reproduced in discriminatory policies and practices within law enforcement, unless and until steps are taken to actively work toward biasfree policing.” One of the many recommendations that came out of Oppal’s report was that police agencies carry out mandatory training in overcoming biases, rather than more passive sensitivity training. Dubord said in the absence of a provincewide program, which is in the works but has not been rolled out yet, the department decided to design its own. Delta is

were in Winnipeg for a session on identifying and reducing unconscious biases. Unconscious bias is something that develops in people over time, based on past life experiences and their current circumstances. It can unconsciously affect how a person interacts with people of a different race or ethnic background, gender, age or sexual orientation. For example, Granum said, a police officer performing a routine traffic stop might approach the car differently depending on who they see in the vehicle — an elderly driver, a mom with a car seat in the back or a car full of teenagers. Dubord said the training is important because as the community continues

to become more diverse, police officers are coming into contact with a wider variety of people. Granum said the initial training she and Sidhu received was based on a U.S. model that focused more on black-white race relations. She said they took that program and refined it to make it more specific to Canada and Delta. “The ultimate goal is for them to understand that there is the existence and recognize it when it happens,” she said. The department’s management team already went through the training course, which sparked some lively debate, Granum said, and the program was rolled out to all officers and civilian staff starting last Friday.

Officer is facing two forgery charges

A Delta police officer is facing forgery charges. Const. Geoffrey Young was charged this week with two counts of forgery in relation to prescription pain medication after a Surrey RCMP investigation. The alleged offences took place on Nov. 8, 2015 and were not related to Young’s police duties. At the time he was on administrative duties following a return to work after a medical leave. The officer, 38, is charged with forgery and causing a person to use a forged document. His next court appearance is scheduled for today. Young has been a member of the Delta Police Department since 2009. He remains on paid medical leave while a Police Act investigation is carried out.

She said her daughter ran a horse rescue operation out of the barn a few years ago that wouldn’t have taken off without Robinson’s help. Ochoa-Rangno, a Delta resident, works for Richmond’s OHM Medical, which, among other services, provides resuscitation equipment and customized medical workshops. saving skills of CPR and using an AED. “Let’s breathe life back into Loranda Farms after their devastating fire and help them rebuild their life’s work,” she said, adding the CPR awareness event could also help residents learn how to save a life. The event is set for Saturday, Feb. 13 at Hawthorne Elementary from noon to 2 p.m. The event is by donation with a minimum of $5. Donations can be made at the door or through e-transfer to lisa.ochoarangno@ohmmedical. com. There are also two online fundraisers for Loranda Farms and Pathfinder Pet Care, an adjacent business that has

been without power since the fire. They can be found at https://www.gofundme. com/8fjv8zsc and https:// www.gofundme.com/fsmwt5yk. The Loranda Farms fundraiser has raised more than $15,000 since it was started just hours after the fire and the Pathfinder Pet Care page has raised more than $800 to help pay for the gas needed to run generators to power the business and residence. A bottle and tack drive for Loranda Farms has been organized for this weekend. Donations are being accepted at Ladner Baptist Church between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tack donations for the horses and their owners can also be dropped off at the church.

A high-ranking RCMP officer has joined the Delta Police Department. Chief Neil Dubord announced Monday that Norm Lipinski is joining the department as deputy chief beginning March 14. “It gives me great pleasure to announce that Norm Lipinski has been selected as our new deputy chief constable,” said Mayor Lois Jackson, who also heads the Delta police board. Public is asked to weigh in on master plan for Winskill Park

The Corporation of Delta is looking for the public’s input into a master plan for Winskill Park. Beginning Feb. 9, the municipality will start a series of meetings intended to develop a longrange vision in the form of a master plan for the Tsawwassen park, including the Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre. “These public consultations will provide valuable insight into what residents believe will be required for

Winskill Park to continue to meet the needs of the community in the future,” the Corporation of Delta states on its website. Meetings with residents, stakeholders and community organizations will be held over the next six months. The master plan process includes four phases — gathering community input, prioritization of that input, developing a program that will then be put out to the community for

further input and design, where the community will be engaged to provide feedback on a conceptual design and an implementation plan. The first public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at KinVillage Community Centre. For more information and the full meeting schedule, visit http:// www.delta.ca/your-government/delta’s-projects/ winskill-park-master-plan.

t might come as a pleasant surprise, but no one will be stumping for your vote this year. Perhaps I’m still smarting from one of the longest federal election campaigns in Canadian history, one that stretched from the middle of summer well into fall, but it seems like there’s always an election on the horizon and, consequently, we’re continually bombarded with missives from those seeking our support. As with many perceptions, this one isn’t entirely accurate, although a little checking on the web does reveal that a year without an election is a relatively rare occurrence, something akin to a leap year. When you take the upcoming scheduled elections into account, there will only be five years over the first two decades of this century where we don’t go to the polls at least once. In three of those years — 2005, 2008 and 2011 — we were treated to two elections. Maybe it’s the elevated level of rancour in recent years or perhaps it’s the ability of candidates to reach out to us in so many ways, but election campaigns have become like visits to the dentist: you know they’re necessary, but you don’t necessarily look forward to them. “I can’t wait ’til it’s over.” I know that phrase was uttered in my household multiple times last fall, often right after the TV commercial aired where the Conservative think tank takes issue with Justin Trudeau’s policies and experience, but not his hair. I suspect similar sentiments were uttered in homes throughout the country, so as some sort of peace offering we have been given an election-free year. We’ve got a provincial election next year, a municipal one the year after and a federal vote in 2019, so it will be some time before we experience another freebie, although with the municipal election cycle now joining the province and feds at every four years, it will, thankfully, come around more frequently. For now, we should savour the quiet, delight in the absence of that electioneering din, because you can be certain that campaigning for next spring’s provincial election will get underway before the calendar turns. If you’re one of those political junkies that can’t wait until then, there’s always the race for the White House to keep you entertained.

an Paton’s emergence as a strong voice on Delta council is a throwback to earlier times in Delta. As a third generation “farm boy,” he is the lone council voice from the agro/business community. In the first half of the 20th century, the majority of councillors represented farming interests. The agricultural community remains well represented by Paton who is more than a onetrick pony. He graduated from Delta Secondary as a good student/athlete and popular with his peers. He attended UBC and graduated with a bachelor of education and a one-year teaching certificate. Paton taught briefly in various substitute positions and was offered, but declined, full-time employment in the Delta school system. He changed career paths to remain in farming and followed his father’s footsteps into auctioneering. He was raised in a traditional family with three siblings and parents, Ian Sr. (deceased) and Marjorie, who were both active volunteers in the community. Paton Sr. was an agronomist by profession and partner in Paton and Smith auctioneers incorporated in 1953. Ian Sr. was appointed to the Agricultural Land Commission and was chair for many years. A registered nurse by training, Marjorie was very involved with the East Delta Church, DeMolay

and Job’s daughters, all the while raising an active family. In younger times Ian Jr. belonged to Delta’s 4H Club and later was a member of East Delta’s volunteer fire department. He is a director of the McKee Athletic Society that operates the East Delta Hall. One of his community challenges involved restoring the hall, which was severely damaged by fire in 1992. Along with the entire board of directors and many volunteers, he spent two years of time and talent renovating the historic building, scene of numerous community events. The board as a whole was recognized by Delta Chamber of Commerce as “Citizens of the Year.” With his family background and profile as a successful auctioneer, it was a natural fit for Ian Jr. to enter local politics. He successfully challenged for a seat on council in 2010 following the untimely passing of George Hawksworth. He was re-elected in

2011 and 2014. This plain spoken, logical thinker (like most farmers) has polished his rhetoric and has become a member of council worth listening to. While browsing in Delta’s archives, I read his positioning statement on the Tsawwassen Area Plan and the Spetifore land issue, a well thought out and balanced analysis of farmland mired in 40 years of community turmoil. Paton is on eight council committees, chairing the agricultural advisory and dikes and drainage committees, and liaison with Delta Farmers’ Institute. He has broadened his interest as a member of Metro Vancouver’s regional planning committee and representation on Metro Vancouver board as council liaison. Aside from the onerous council agenda he remains an active farmer, living on original family acreage with wife Pam. His public profile is enhanced by his profession as a successful auctioneer and he offers his services at charitable functions to raise funds for worthwhile causes. With the provincial election looming in 2017 and municipal elections in 2018, Paton has some decisions to mull over as to his upwardly mobile political future. We’ll watch with interest. And a good night to you, Marjorie. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Silent majority needs to speak up for Ladner

Editor: Re: Waiting on waterfront, Murphy’s Law, Jan. 27 After reading the column by Ted Murphy, I thought I should give some insight into how as a stakeholder and business owner on Chisholm Street, as well as the president of the Ladner Business Association, I feel about the situation on the waterfront in Ladner. The heart of any community such as Ladner is our small businesses. We employ your children, provide you with the goods and services locally and pay our fair share of taxes too. In order for the small business community to survive in Ladner, we need change. Change can be scary. Change can be uncomfortable. But change can also be wonderful. By change, I mean the “silent majority” must come out and be heard. When Delta council and the committees it

formed brought forward its plans for the revitalization of Chisholm Street a few years back, the movements that came forward that made themselves heard were those who projected falsely to us that Chisholm Street would turn into a small city with large hotels and crowds of unsavoury people. Enough fear was mongered that the overall sentiment turned negative and, as any elected council would react, the brakes on the project were put on. Now, I must talk to thousands of people throughout the year. Locals, visitors, tourists. I see them all. And almost every one of them says, “Wouldn’t it be nice if the waterfront was redeveloped?” Of course, I reply. Ladner cannot stay the way it is and survive. We need to densify the village core to create an attractive, walkable and bike-friendly core. One where people who live in Ladner can leave their cars at home

and shop local, one that, with the increased population base, can support the arts and museums that come with a vibrant community. We have been fortunate to be supported by the local community at Sharkey’s for over 24 years now. I owe everything we have to the people of Ladner. My kids now go to school in Ladner, and I would love nothing more than to be able to see them stay in Ladner, to eventually work in Ladner and to love Ladner as we all do. Let’s stop allowing the few who are the loudest in opposition and make us in the silent majority heard. Write to your councillors and MLAs. Let them know that, yes, we want to see Ladner change. We want our small businesses to thrive and survive. And we want change! Andrea Frustaci President, LBA Sharkey’s Seafood Bar and Grille The Dancing Pig

storage locker. One can only imagine what the problem may be. Is it just complacency, or perhaps an attitude that this is still a small town so we shouldn’t have to worry about such things? Whatever the reason, people need to wake up. It’s not 1950 anymore, thieves are everywhere and I imagine word spreads

quickly about neighbourhoods with plenty of easy targets. In my opinion, fines should be levied for those who waste the time of police and contribute to the problem by leaving doors unlocked and valuable items in vehicles, sometimes I’m sure in plain view for the taking. Jeff Stack

Delta agrees to develop bird strategy Spurred by Delta Naturalists Society, initiative will identify, protect and enhance biodiversity SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta will come up with new strategy to support one of the most diverse populations of bird species in all of Canada. Delta council approved a staff recommendation Monday to develop a Delta Bird and Biodiversity Strategy in conjunction with the Delta Naturalists Society and other partners. Last fall, members of the naturalists made a presentation at a council workshop pitching the idea of a strategy, noting Delta’s Fraser River estuary and Burns Bog have global significance. The purpose of the strategy, they explained, is to “identify, protect and enhance biodiversity in Delta to ensure that necessary conditions exist for

thriving and diverse native wildlife, with a particular emphasis on birds.” The naturalists explained the strategy would catalogue and protect bird habitats with high biodiversity, enhance existing habitat and identify habitat creation opportunities, as well as enhance awareness of Delta’s birds and biodiversity through outreach and communications initiatives. The goal is to also reduce urban and rural threats and promote birdrelated tourism. Delta will also help distribute and display a pair of birding brochures created by the society and will participate in the 2018 International Ornithological Congress in Vancouver, facilitating birding tours within Delta. Delta Farmland and Delta boasts one of the most diverse populations of bird species in the country, a situation that will be enhanced by the Delta Bird and Biodiversity Strategy.

Sasha

Doberman Pinscher/Rottweiler Mix Breed, Black and Tan, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 3 years old) Meet Sasha! She has had a huge adventure to get her to Delta. She originates from a pretty hard life in a community near Hazelton, BC. Volunteers got her to the Kitimat Humane Society who then helped her get down to us so she can find a forever family! Sasha is 3 years young and spent a lot of her life having babies, roaming unsupervised or being tethered outside. She is a high energy, unmannered dog who LOVES affection. She is very sweet and just needs some guidance! Her ideal home is one where she can be the “apple of your eye” (no other dogs, cats or small animals) Teen children who are interested in participating with her training would also be OK. She is active so would do great in a home that is super active (hiking, running etc) Our traffic and busy shelter is a hard adjustment for her but Sasha is going to make an excellent companion for someone - and after her rough start to life she really deserves it!

Wildlife Trust program coordinator Christine Terpsma told the Optimist that while the trust has not formally contributed to the idea of strategy, so far, it looks forward to providing input to assist in its development. “Many of the goals outlined in the memo prepared for council align

closely with the mandate of our organization, as our stewardship programs contribute to the enhancement of farmland habitats for conservation objectives,” she said. The City of Vancouver produced its own “bird strategy” last year aimed at improving the city’s habitat conditions for birds,

PAT QUINN’S RESTAURANT Pat Quinn’s Restaurant & Bar is now open. The new restaurant honours the Big Irishman, a well-known and loved NHL hockey player and coach, and one of the original partners in Tsawwassen Springs, who passed away last year. “There’s Sinatra’s at Wynn’s in Vegas, Arnold Palmer’s in Palm Springs, Don Shula’s in Miami, and these are great restaurants that acknowledge these guys for the icons they are in their communities,” says Ron Toigo, Managing Director of Shato Holdings. “Pat Quinn was second to none in this community. He knew a lot about hockey and building a team both in an office and on the ice. Pat also knew a

great restaurant, having eaten at a lot of the best ones around the world. We talked about this with Pat, and creating a restaurant with exceptional food and ambience that everyone will feel comfortable at was something he was passionate about.” Described as a classic West Coast grill, Pat Quinn’s Restaurant & Bar combines comforting,high-quality fare with impeccable service. “This is a place to honour the man and the legend, and enjoy a refined atmosphere with all the class and passion he brought to the game,” says Tsawwassen Springs General Manager Steve Halliday.

“Pat was a great friend that I really enjoyed being around,” says Bruce Allen, talent agent and Tsawwassen Springs partner. “We have been partners in a number of ventures with Ron over the years, and we ate at a lot of great restaurants, so we all know a quality restaurant when we eat at one… it will be apparent to everyone that the Big Irishman would have been right at home.” Located right next to Pat Quinn’s Restaurant & Bar is the new Springs Ballroom at Tsawwassen Springs, the largest ballroom south of the Fraser River at 6,300 square feet. Who

benefits from a BRIDGE

By Sandor Gyarmati sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

$3.5-billion crossing is being built for commuters, but it also opens up river to bigger ships.

At 10 lanes and an estimated $3.5 billion, the new bridge will be the longest in B.C. history.

A

bridge to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel is scheduled to open in 2022, but is the $3.5-billion structure being built to move traffic across the Fraser River or along it? That’s a question that’s gaining traction these days as critics of

the bridge plan, and the subsequent removal of the tunnel, are wondering whether the provincial project has more to do with ships than cars. “The provincial motivation for the bridge is clear,” says Doug Massey, whose late father George was the driving force behind the tunnel’s construction back in the 1950s. “Where is the motivation

for Delta to support this costly edifice to move deep draft container traffic?” The biggest bridge project in B.C. history at more than three kilometres in length, construction of the tolled, 10-lane span, which includes a series of road and overpass projects as well

as capacity for rapid transit, is scheduled to begin next year. Massey says heavy lobbying from industry, with little or no input from the public, Metro Vancouver or TransLink, led Victoria toward a bridge that will improve access to industrial properties on the lower Fraser River. He is also upset about plans to demolish the tunnel, which

the province says can no longer handle traffic volumes and doesn’t meet seismic standards, once the bridge is built. “The George Massey Tunnel would only be an impediment if and when Port Metro Vancouver and their associates were given permission to dredge the lower Fraser River deeper to 14.5 metres now and deeper in the future as the need arose, in their opinion.” Massey, who has been gathering documentation to support his argument, says he’s frustrated with policies that will destroy the ecosystem of the Fraser River, adding that as late as 2006 the province’s long range plan included tunnel expansion to six lanes. The Burns Bog Conservation Society is also raising questions, creating a website that notes instead of replacing a tunnel with a bridge, the government of the Netherlands is upgrading a tunnel at a cost of $262 million Euros – about $420 million Canadian. “Is a new bridge over the Fraser River the best place to spend our limited public infrastructure dollars? Can we upgrade the Massey Tunnel instead and spend the money saved on other projects, like public transit?” the society asks. “The B.C. government says that the bridge is being built to benefit commuters, but the port and industrial users of the Fraser River are clearly going to benefit if this project goes ahead. They should have to pay for a big portion of the cost of this bridge.” The environmental group Voters Taking Action on Climate Change has been echoing those concerns, last year making public documents it obtained

that suggest the port asked the government for a bridge several metres higher than what has been proposed to accommodate taller liquefied natural gas transport ships at a proposed terminal in Delta. Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO Robin Silvester told the Optimist the port was

“The B.C. government says that the bridge is being built to benefit commuters, but the port and industrial users of the Fraser River are clearly going to benefit if this project goes ahead. They should have to pay for a big portion of the cost of this bridge.” – Burns Bog Conservation Society

among those consulted about the potential bridge design, but says the constraints of the river, including depth and turning radius, limit the size of ships that can ply the waterway. “We would like to be able to fully load the size of ships that we can get up the river, which is the current Panamax ships, but the idea that they’re going to be super tankers or mega ships going up the river is just rubbish. It’s completely misplaced because you couldn’t turn them around. “When the province asked us about how big the bridge should be, what we looked at was what’s the largest air draft – the distance above the water – that a ship going up the river could foreseeably need. Two types of ships we look at there: One was a cruise ship, because we can see in the longterm maybe having a cruise ship terminal on the river. The other

The province says a new tunnel would eat up more land as it couldn’t be constructed along the existing corridor.

was an LNG ship. Between cruise ships and LNG ships, they have the highest height above the water.” But does that mean dredging? Not according to port chief financial officer Allan Baydala, who in open letter on the port’s website says that while the removal of the tunnel may create greater depth at that point in the river, the amount of dredging required on either side could be extensive and potentially cost prohibitive. Port Metro Vancouver spends $15 million annually to dredge the river to its current depth of about 11.5 metres, recouping a big chunk of that by selling the sand. In 2014, Fraser Surrey Docks and the Surrey Board of Trade went to Ottawa to pitch for additional federal money for extra dredging that would deepen the river to 13.5 metres. George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project director Geoff Freer told the Optimist there’s no plan to dredge the river even deeper, noting it would be a huge, costly undertaking because the entire river would need to be dredged. As far as the tunnel being removed to allow bigger ships, Freer notes the tunnel has settled

and is under the floor of river, so it’s not sticking up and ships wouldn’t be scraping it anyway. Having a new bridge the same height as the Alex Fraser will dictate what can be accommodated ship-wise, he says. Freer says a new tunnel would have to be built further upriver or downstream, which would have meant the loss of farmland. It would have also required a much deeper channel to meet today’s seismic standards. Freer says a new bridge and a new tunnel would have had roughly the same price tag but a tunnel would have had higher risks and consequences. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure hasn’t denied the movement of goods by water was taken into consideration when deciding on a crossing, stating in its Project Definition Report that a number of industries – including container import/export, auto import/export and breakbulk exports – use the Fraser River as a marine highway. Consistent with Port Metro Vancouver’s Land Use Plan, more intensive use of sites on the south arm of the Fraser River can be anticipated to support continued growth

in Canada’s trade, the Project Definition Report notes. As to why the current tunnel can’t be maintained for local traffic or transit use, the report explains keeping it would require significant rehabilitation and ongoing operating costs, and the tunnel would still not meet current seismic standards. Transportation Minister Todd Stone recently wrote to the Optimist saying a bridge can be constructed with minimal disturbance in the Fraser River, something that can’t be said of a new

tunnel. “In short, we thoroughly reviewed the benefits of all options,” Stone wrote. “A bridge will be safer, more seismically sound, more environmentally friendly, and more cost effective than a replacement tunnel.” (Below) Doug Massey, whose late father George was the driving force behind the tunnel that bears his name, doesn’t like plans for a new bridge. file photo

Welcomes You

This is a very wet time of year in our city. It seems that rain continues to fall day after day with hardly a break in sight. For those of us that don’t head south, we weather the storm, sigh and dream of warm sunshine. One could look at things from a different perspective. Water is vital to life. It keeps our trees and fields green. It is a wonderful gift from God. Jesus actually promised that we could have more than temporary rain showers just for the asking. While visiting with a woman at a well in Samaria, Jesus said to her: “…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give

was a woman that was lost. She was considered so sinful that she had to draw water in the heat of the day when she could be alone. This didn’t deter Jesus. He knew the water from the well would soon run dry. But through repentance of sin, and belief in him, she could have living water, which is eternal life. Maybe you think you are beyond the reach of God. Your past may haunt you. Your actions disappoint you. But when you see the rain continue to fall, remember that Jesus offers water that never runs dry. He loves you. He wants you to have eternal life.

Valentine’s Day

Karen and John Laurie enjoy a ferry ride on the Queen of Nanaimo. The couple loves riding the ferries and spending much of the trip out on the deck, taking in the view and letting the wind style their hair. It always adds to the fun when they spot the Galiano Inn where they got married last September.

Beryl and Laurie Nicol are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. Their wedding featured a pied piper, a belly dancer, a magician, a Chinese tea ceremony and dancing.

Danielle and Tyler Treftlin having a blast on the lakes in Fort Francis, Ontario.

Cathie and Wayne Friebel are shown on the roller coaster at Playland. Cathie says no matter where they go together, they always have fun and it’s always an adventure. She says falling in love with this man four years ago was the best thing that ever happened to her.

Sarah Rose and her husband Christian enjoying margaritas in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Alexis Storey and her husband Mike snapped some fun photos in Steveston where they first met. Their friends were amazed they captured this moment last February using a tripod and a self-timer on the camera.

adner’s Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo will mark its fifth annual edition later this month at Harris Barn. The Ladner Community Garden is presenting the event and partnering with the Corporation of Delta again this year. Delta will be putting together a children’s gardening activity this time around, says organizer and past president for the Ladner Community Garden Kristin Crouch.

“We want it to be a whole family event,” she says. Seedy Saturday also includes guest speakers, a seed swap and vendors. People are encouraged to bring their seeds between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and drop them off. The seeds will be sorted and then trading will get started at 10:30 a.m. “It was very busy for seed trading last year. It was probably our busiest year,” says Crouch, who plans on bringing cucamelon seeds this time. She wrote about the “unique and tasty fruit” in her blog (which appears

GUEST SPEAKER LINEUP 10 a.m. - David Catzel: Seed Saving 101 11:30 a.m. - Conway Lum: Fruit Trees and their Quirks 1 p.m. - Egan Davis: Secrets of Becoming a Succesful Gardener 2:30 p.m. - Randy Shore: Grow What You Eat, Eat What You Grow on the Optimist website) and described it as “a cucumber that has hint of lime to it” that is harvested when it’s about the size of a grape. This year’s expo has shifted back to a one-day event after taking place over two days last year. Crouch says it’s a bit of a

stretch for volunteers to do two days and that while over 600 people visited the first day, it wasn’t as busy on the second. Vendors will have plants, seeds and garden accessories for sale on the ground floor of the barn. Crouch notes there will be some new vendors

in attendance and that between 30 and 35 are usually present. Seedy Saturday takes place Saturday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harris Barn, 4140 Arthur Dr. Admission is by donation. Last year proceeds from admissions were donated to four school gardens in Ladner and to a B.C. Council of Garden Clubs scholarship fund that helps students studying horticulture. For more information visit ladnercommunitygarden.blogspot.ca or email Crouch at therivercrest@ gmail.com.

What you should be eating before a workout

Well on Your Way

H P.J. WREN

ave you ever started a workout feeling so awesome, yet 15 to 20 minutes in you begin to feel nauseous and drained of energy? Or perhaps you got halfway through your fitness class only to all of a sudden crash and burn, hands shaking, dizzy and feeling sick. I have been training people for over 20 years now and I have seen it all. And while exercise may be the pin that popped the balloon, so to speak, the main culprit that led that pin to the balloon is usually how the person fuelled their body before their

workout. First a quick (and basic) physiology lesson: From the moment you put food in your mouth, it is being digested. A carbohydrate-rich food (such as bread, cereal, fruit) breaks down as simple sugars for your muscles to start using for fuel. A protein-rich food (such as Greek yogurt, meat, beans) is used to build and repair the body tissues. And a food high in fat is dissolved first in the intestinal cavity and then carried on from there (like our veins and arteries if we aren’t careful). Each macronutrient is important for good health, however when it comes to exercise, there are two that reign, and a surprise that has science scratching its head. First, it is generally recommended (to properly fuel your body before a workout) to eat a food that has both carbohydrates and protein. The carbs will help fuel your muscles and the protein will help with recovery. This could be as simple

Yogurt and berries are a good pre-workout snack. as yogurt and berries, or a hard-boiled egg and an apple. For workouts that are strength-based (like weights, circuits, boot camp), aim for a snack at least 45 to 60 minutes beforehand. Look for 20 to 25 grams of carbohydrates and 10 to 18 grams of protein. Play around with that as I know of a lot of people who need closer to 90

New Dentures

minutes to digest. Find what feels best for you. A couple of things to watch out for are nausea and dizziness. If you start to feel nauseous during your workout, chances are you ate too close to your session. If you begin to feel dizzy, or light headed, you ate too early. Long cardio workouts (like training for a marathon) need a higher carb ratio and should be eaten

at least 45 minutes before you lace up your runners. You need to give the food enough time for the glucose to breakdown and hit the blood steam, so when your runners hit the pavement, you are fuelled and ready to go. Cardio workouts that are under an hour don’t really need a snack, providing you are eating properly throughout the day. And the latest research and buzz in the gym? Cardio workouts in a fasted state. These are workouts that are done on an empty stomach and are gaining in popularity. Research is now suggesting that if you’re trying to lose weight, doing a cardio workout in a fasted state (as soon as you get up in the morning) allows you to burn more fat. First thing in the morning, after fasting all night, your body’s natural hormones have the perfect profile for fat loss. Your insulin levels are low, your blood sugar is low (forcing the body to draw on its fat reserves) and your growth hormone levels are at the highest they will ever be

when awake. All of this makes for the perfect fat-loss storm. But there are many experts that disagree and urge people to work out with something in their stomach. Fasted cardio training is new and will need time to pan out with science. My advice is to do whatever will make you work out. I do at least twice a week cardio workouts fasted. It works for me. I also know of a lot of other people who just prefer an empty stomach for the simple fact that a workout feels better without food sloshing around in the gut. If you are hypoglycemic, new to exercise or just not interested in adding any more torture to the whole workout thing, then heed the recommendations of a light snack beforehand. Bottom line is keep moving and keep moving daily — with or without a snack. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer who specializes in over-40 fitness. now. In outside gardens, voles will eat almost anything that can’t run. Garlic is safe, but they eat root vegetables and shallots from below. When I tried a teaspoon of red pepper powder on each shallot being planted, they weren’t touched. It worked for peas too. Whether you’re gardening in containers or an outside garden bed, it helps to plan for crop rotation before spring planting starts. This is ensuring that crops are planted where the same kind of vegetable hasn’t grown for several years. Crop rotation keeps nutrients in balance and ensures pests are kept confused and starved out as they hike around to find where their food supply has gone. Memories being what they are, it helps to write down where things are planted and keep the list to refer to in later years. A three-year rotation is good, four years is better but even a two-year rotation is better than not doing it at all. It helps to remember that cabbage pests will move from one kind of cabbage to another. Tomatoes, potatoes and peppers also have their habitual pests. So do peas and the bean family. The root vegetables also share the same pests. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. It helps me if you mention the name of your city or region.

A weekend exploring Thurston County BY LAUREN KRAMER

T

Optimist contributor

hurston County in Washington state is best known for its jewel, Olympia, a stately, historic and scenic city filled with soaring examples of Greco-Roman architecture and irresistibly browsable book shops, galleries and boutiques. Washington’s version of Victoria, its beautiful state buildings are on a bluff overlooking the ocean and its 278-foot high capitol dome is visible from most everywhere. A five-hour drive from Vancouver, it’s a great destination for a weekend away. There are daily tours of the capitol dome and we gladly joined one led by Ed Smith, a 30-year history teacher whose father had once served in the legislature. He primed our small group on the European marble, carved masonry and more than 300 Tiffany lights and chandeliers that decorate the interior. It’s an impressive, pala-

tial building and one that certainly lends gravity to Washington’s history and the business of lawmaking. It was less-than-fascinating for a six-year-old, though, which is why our next stop was the very antidote: the Hands On Children’s Museum of Olympia. These days almost every city has a children’s museum — but not like this one. “Our goal was to only feature exhibits from the Pacific Northwest, things children might see in their own back yards,” said Jillian Henze, communications manager for the 28,000-square-foot museum. Best suited for the three- to eight-year-old crowd, this innovative space delves into the farm to fork eating experience, the Puget Sound waterway, the forest and the life cycle of water. Touching is mandatory here and by interacting with the exhibits, children learn how currents flow, how large a bald eagle’s nest really is, how water and wind pressure work, how to build

a house and where food comes from. We left Olympia the next day for Grand Mound, 20 minutes away and home to Great Wolf Lodge. The massive indoor water park is a hedonistic kids’ paradise, with water slides that sweep riders on a variety of fast, circuitous watery journeys, a large wave pool and two well-designed water play structures — one for toddlers and the other for kids seven and younger. There’s easily enough to do in the water park alone for a half-day’s entertainment, but once you towel off there’s much more. Around us kids were running around with plastic wands, engrossed in MagiQuest, a game wherein they explore an enchanted kingdom, gain magic powers, learn from the Book of Wisdom and battle a dragon. We took the long road back to Olympia on Old Highway 99 to get a glimpse of Tenino, a sleepy city with a fascinating history. I was anxious to learn

When the quarries closed in the late 1920s, one of them, the Tenino Stone Company Quarry, was deliberately flooded with water from natural

springs by the City of Tenino. It was transformed into a 95-foot deep swimming pool with beautiful, terraced walls that bear evidence of its history. There’s one final stop you should make before leaving Tenino, and that’s the Sandstone Distillery, located on the family farm of John Bourdon. For the

past year he’s been at the helm of the first legal distillery in the county since prohibition, making small batches of gin, vodka and whiskey from Washingtongrown grains. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles.

Seminar to help women master menopause Doctor and personal trainer combine to offer free session later this month in Tsawwassen

A local personal trainer and a naturopathic doctor have teamed up to help women master menopause. Mastering Menopause is a free seminar hosted by Dr. Heli McPhie of The Village Clinic in Tsawwassen and PJ Wren, a personal trainer and over-40 fitness expert.

They are offering the session later this month to educate women on the latest news and research in women’s health to help them conquer menopause because, they believe, with the proper health plan in place women can feel energetic, vibrant and healthy again. The session will cover a

number of topics, including how fitness can help master menopause; what type of exercise every woman over the age of 40 should be doing; how to fight belly fat; the one exercise to do every day to prevent disease; what happens when hormones are used to help manage the symptoms of menopause;

and estrogen, heart health and cancer risk. Perimenopause, also known as the menopausal transition, typically begins sometime in your 40s but some women can start noticing changes in as early as their mid-30s. A woman doesn’t officially reach menopause until there have been 12 months

without menstruation. Symptoms of menopause and perimenopause range from menstrual irregularities, anxiety, dry skin, fatigue, bloating, headaches, hot flashes, insomnia, loss of concentration, mood swings, night sweats and weight gain — all of which can be aggravated by poor life-

style choices. Mastering Menopause runs Thursday, Feb. 25 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Village Clinic (7–1363-56th St.) To register visit www. fitnesswithpj.com/mastering-menopause-event. There are a limited number of spaces and registration must be done online.

South Delta’s Colin Grannary was named Team West MVP during last week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game.

Grannary thriving in BCHL Big week for South Delta forward includes committing to NCAA Div. 1 school MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Amid his soaring stock as a U.S. college hockey prospect, Colin Grannary has committed to the University of Nebraska Omaha. The 18-year-old South Delta native is currently enjoying an outstanding season with the B.C. Hockey League’s Merritt Centennials. He is eighth in league scoring with 66 points in 47 games, including 25 goals. He was also listed 186th among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s Mid-Season Rankings. Grannary was already generating plenty of interest from U.S. schools when he was named Team West MVP at last week’s Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game in South Surrey. He scored his team’s only goal as the West fell to the East 3-1. That only led to more calls and

emails from NCAA programs until Grannary accepted Nebraska Omaha’s lucrative offer. The Mavericks play in the highprofile National Collegiate Hockey Conference that also includes North Dakota, Denver, Colorado College, Western Michigan, Miami-Ohio and Minnesota Duluth. The team is currently ranked 12th in the nation with a 16-9-1 overall record. Grannary made official visits to four schools before making his final decision. “This has been a long and drawn out process for him that started about a year ago,” said Cenntenials general manager and head coach Joe Martin. “After the Showcase there were about 20 schools enquiring about him. Colin had a lot of options but he is a small town type of kid. I’m sure, he’s glad his decision has been made so he can get back to focusing on what he is most comfort-

able with and that’s on the ice.” Grannary came through the South Delta Minor Hockey rep program before shifting over to the Delta Hockey Academy where he put up big numbers with the U18 Wild Prep team — producing 52 points in 27 games. He was also a frequent call-up by the Delta Ice Hawks and more than held his own in the junior “B” ranks as a 16-year-old with eight points in as many games, playing mostly with DHA teammate Colton Kroeker. The Hawks were quietly hoping Grannary might need a year of seasoning at home where he would get to play with his older brother Evan. However, that potential family reunion was dashed when Colin had an impressive showing at the Centennials’ prospects camp in Abbotsford. “He has a very high skill level with the puck and it really stood

out at that camp,” recalled Martin. “You could see he was one of the smartest players on the ice.” Grannary went on to have a solid rookie campaign with 39 points in 55 games. This season, more was expected of him and he has grasped the opportunity by elevating his play. “That was a hard first season for him,” continued Martin. “Here was a skinny young skills guy going out there mostly against bigger 19-and-20-year-olds each game. And you have to remember we play in a very competitive division with Vernon, Penticton, Salmon Arm. There are a lot of decommitted guys who have come back or even from major junior.” “He added about 10 pounds in the off-season and is skating better too. It has made a difference, especially with the ability he already had.” Grannary will head to Nebraska Omaha for the 2017-18 season.

The Delta Pacers have navigated their way through a few potential land mines to set the stage for the biggest game of their season on Tuesday night. The Pacers will host the No. 2 ranked Southridge Titans at 7:30 p.m. with an opportunity to nail down first place in the Fraser Valley AAA West League and host the upcoming league playoff tournament. Delta (6-1) moved into top spot in the standings after cruising past Sullivan Heights 71-53 on Tuesday in Ladner. The Titans (4-1) were surprised by third place LA Matheson (6-2) back in early December but otherwise have been a major force all season with impressive wins against a number of traditional powerhouses at the AAAA level, including a 95-60 triumph over top 10 ranked Vancouver College last week. The South Surrey private school also captured the Tsumura Invitational, beating Churchill (94-88) and Holy Cross (91-78) along the way. The Pacers promptly took care of a Sullivan Heights team that has been competitive all season. Jas Singh led the way with 24 and Cam Ratzlaff added 22. “We have been a little beat up so I was worried,” said Pacers head coach David Craig. “I thought we played very well

considering. Now, we have a week to get healthy and see what we can do against (Southridge). They certainly have shown they have the capability of going off.” Craig says it’s important for his team to have a top seed for the eight team league playoff tournament which will determine four berths for the Fraser Valley AAA Championships. From there, eight schools will clash from the West and East leagues and four will take their season to the provincial AAA tournament next month in Langley. He is pleased to see his young team continuing to make progress as the postseason looms. Singh is carrying the offensive scoring load with poise and Ratzlaff has become a reliable second threat, especially when his perimeter game is on. Grade 10 William Khuu is handling the point guard position with growing confidence. The lone senior in the starting line-up — Jackson Goodman — missed Tuesday’s game but is typically active in the paint and provides leadership. “We need to keep playing well and I think we are getting better,” added Craig. “William is really helping. He is our best defender and he is starting to score a few points too. “(No. 1) Rick Hansen and Southridge look like the two teams to beat (at the Valleys) but I think we are in the mix after that.”

Georgia Primar cell: 604.644.5821 CRAZY Market In this extremely hot Seller’s market, you as a Buyer have undoubtedly found yourself frustrated with the blind competition of trying to purchase a home. I am writing this to try and help you achieve success in this process. Locally in Ladner, new Houses and Condos are open for Realtors and Buyers to view from 10-12 on Wednesdays and in Tsawwassen they are open for Realtors and Buyers on Fridays from 10-12. Contact your Realtor for the list of Homes that are being shown, which is usually available the night before. If you work during those hours don’t worry, let your Realtor know which houses you are interested in. Typically there are Open Houses on the following Saturday or Sunday or you can ask your Realtor to set up a private showing as soon as possible. It’s good to know how the Seller’s Realtor is handling offers, so be sure to ask. Lately the Seller’s Realtor usually has the Realtor’s Open, and then Public Open Houses on the weekend,

followed by presentation and acceptance of an offer at a set time from Sunday to Tuesday. Do ask because each case is different. Since we are seeing multiple-offer situations on most listings I would encourage you to do the following prior to having your Realtor writing a subject free offer: Have your finances approved and ready to go! Hire a Home Inspector to inspect the desired property prior to when the Seller’s Realtor is accepting offers. Have your Realtor go to City Hall to see if there is anything on the property you need to be aware of. Have your Realtor ask the Seller’s Realtor questions that concern you or your home inspector. Now the ‘‘fun’’ part: the writing of the offer and how much do you offer? Have your Realtor pull recent “Solds” in the desired price point and see what they were asking compared to what the property sold for. Use this

Sutton Group - Seafair Realty 1625-56 ST. Tsawwassen

information to guide you in making the best offer you feel financially comfortable with. For some Sellers it’s not just about the highest price, it can be the dates you can close on or the “Subjects” in the offer. If you’re going to write an unconditional offer make sure you include wording in the offer that protects you as far as the Title, the Property Disclosure Statement, and previous use of the home for illegal activities. Always have your Realtor present your offer in person when allowed. If not allowed, be sure to either have your Realtor write a cover letter introducing you or you write a letter to the owner explaining what it is about their home that you and your family love. A picture of you and your family is always a nice touch. When your Realtor is presenting your offer, be outside in the car waiting, you never know when you may be needed for consultation or maybe it’ll be accepted right then but requires your initials on a minor change! I wish you the Best of Luck and I am always Happy to assist you in your Real Estate needs.

1922 - 2016

Mildred (Millie) McKerracher died peacefully on the evening of Jan 31, 2016. She is sadly missed by her family. She is survived by her son, Dennis (Margaret), her grandsons Reiley (Maggie), Chris (Jess), Mark, two great-grandchildren, Cassie and Mason; and her daughter-in-law Francis. She was predeceased by her husband, Clyde, her son Wayne and brother Robert Holder. Millie was born in Chinook Alberta 93 years ago, July 23, 1922. Millie’s family moved to Fahler near Grand Prairie Alberta and farmed. Millie’s love of animals was plainly apparent when an orphan bear cub was found and Millie nurtured the cub until adulthood. She would ride her horse bareback most days and on one momentous occasion she landed in a nest of hornets. Stung very badly she managed to mount her horse who took her home.

She met and married her husband in Grand Prairie. Millie was an army wife and moved to Vancouver Wireless Station in Ladner in 1949. Through Clyde’s tenure in the army, she developed lifelong friends who cherished her as much as she loved them. Always up for adventure, she would drive her sons’ homemade go-carts on the runways at VWS. She loved having friends and family over and was a wonderful host. Her family could always crack her prim and proper exterior with a good off-colour joke. Millie was kind, incredibly loving, gracious and a person everyone would want to know. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delta Hospital www.dhfoundation.ca. Please help us celebrate Millie’s life on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at 11:00 am at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC.
