COVID-19 pandemic results in Beach Grove students bonding with seniors MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Hand-made gifts and written wellwishes delivered to a Tsawwassen seniors’ residence were more than just a kind gesture from a group of students - they were genuinely concerned about their newfound friends. Last week, each resident at The Waterford received friendship bracelets made by Grade 6 and 7 students from Beach Grove Elementary. The seniors living community had been going through a COVID-19 outbreak since late December. The good deed is the latest chapter in an unlikely bonding that began before the pandemic. That’s when a former Beach Grove teacher arranged for her students to visit The Waterford where they got to meet the residents. Joanne Calder and Nancy Klassen picked it up from there when COVID-19 made face-to-face meetings no longer possible by having their classes write letters. “We started off doing a ‘get to know you’ letter and they wrote back to us which was one of the most amazing things I have ever done with my classes,” explained Calder. “We have been doing a lot on story and personal story (writing), so to hear the seniors’ personal stories in connection with their own histories was just fantastic. We actually read all their letters out loud to the class. We have also been reading a book

the winter break. The students then learned of the outbreak a couple of weeks later. “We have been worried sick about them all, so we made them friendship bracelets in class with ‘be safe’ cards,” continued Calder. Next on the project list is making a video and birthday cards for a resident

turning 106 next week. “These two teachers are firecrackers,” said Janice Miller, marketing and community relations manager for Bria Communities that operates The Waterford. “It’s just been a really wonderful experience to see that kind of thoughtfulness and to see adults having conversations with kids about seniors. What it means during COVID-19 and how seniors are really experiencing a different type of situation. I love that compassion we are seeing coming out of those kids. It’s a really big lift for our spirits.” Calder is hoping there will be face-toface meetings again in the near future for her students. Pandemic or not, she is thrilled at what has been added to her curriculum. “I’ve been teaching for 20 years and I don’t know why this is the first time I have ever done this. It’s one of the beautiful things that have come out of COVID,” she added. “I wouldn’t have thought necessarily to make this connection. A lot of the kids have talked about how they have missed their grandparents and just missing the contact, so any way we can have contact and make connections with people in different ways during this time, it has been very beneficial for the kids. They and the seniors have had so much fun.” See related stories on page 4 and 19. For more on this story go to www.delta-optimist.com.

New housing plans coming for Delta, TFN SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

More communities including the Tsawwassen First Nation will be following the City of Delta in formulating new housing strategies. The provincial government this week announced it is allocating nearly $1 million to help another 26 communities assess and report on local housing needs. “Local governments and First Nations play a critical role in addressing the housing crisis, and the impacts of COVID-19 on people and communities have reinforced just how important it is to support them in their efforts,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, in a news release. “This funding will help communities determine exactly what kind of housing people need and will support healthy and resilient communities across B.C. well into the future.” The province notes the latest funding recipients are from the third intake of the Housing Needs Report Program, administered by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. In 2018, the province committed $5 million over three years to help local governments, including the City of Delta, collect and analyze housing-related data from their communities. Successful applicants receive 50 per cent of the grant funding once approved and the remaining 50 per cent once they complete their final reporting to UBCM. The province notes it expanded the program eligibility to B.C.’s eight Treaty First Nations and the Tsawwassen First Nation is one of the successful applicants from the third intake. The TFN will receive funding to develop a housing needs report. After signing a historic urban treaty more than a decade ago, housing developments are now well underway on both sides of Highway 17 at the TFN.

FILE PHOTO

The B.C. government notes that more than 75 per cent of local governments have already successfully applied for a housing needs report grant or developed housing needs reports without provincial funding.

The subdivisions springing up include the Tsawwassen Shores development by Aquilini Development, while Onni Group and Mosaic also plan to build a range of homes. The TFN land use plan approved by members has more than 2,800 homes to be built over the next decade or so with Tsawwassen Shores comprising 850 of those units. About 8,000 new non-member residents are expected to eventually call the TFN home. In a previous interview, TFN Chief Ken Baird said many of the First Nation’s members don’t reside at the Tsawwassen Lands, something he hopes will eventually change with new housing to encourage more members to come home. According to the TFN’s latest strategic plan, one of the First Nation’s goals is creating a home for TFN members, including a variety of housing types and ownership

options suited to the needs of all members. The plan is to have a comprehensive housing plan that takes advantage of the TFN’s treaty powers to prioritize member needs and pursue affordable ownership options, particularly for elders, young families and off-lands members. The objectives also includes securing funding to create a new supply of apartment housing across the range of incomes and achieving a clear implementation plan for a Community Housing Area. Meanwhile, as far as what’s happening in the City of Delta, a draft housing strategy is to be presented to council in the coming weeks. The city has already undertaken community consultation to help formulate a housing needs assessment, which was completed last year, and further consultation will be held on the draft strategy after it is presented.

Nature photographers are causing serious concern at the environmentally sensitive area of Brunswick Point in Delta. Delta council last week discussed a letter from a concerned resident about photographers following hawks, owls and other birds into the marsh. It’s a situation that could be seen recently when a dozen

photographers were in the marsh, and as some began to leave, more arrived. Also writing a letter to Delta South MLA Ian Paton regarding concerns about hunting activity at Brunswick Point, the letter writer urged the city to take action to protect the wildlife and habitat, and council agreed something needs to be done. A memo from staff notes the Roberts Bank Wildlife Management Area is under the

jurisdiction of the B.C. government. Staff already forwarded the letter to a regional wildlife coordinator for feedback. “The increasing public use of Brunswick Point and the potential impacts to the habitat in this area is being reviewed by provincial staff. B.C. conservation officers enforce hunting regulations and attend Brunswick Point periodically to respond to complaints about

illegal hunting activity and monitor the managed harvests in the area,” the memo explains. Mayor George Harvie said the problem of photographers not obeying the rules is one that seems to come up every few years, but there doesn’t seem to be as much enforcement as is needed. Council agreed to ask Premier John Horgan and the environment ministry to take action.

The COVID-19 outbreak, declared in late December at The Waterford in Tsawwassen, has been declared over. “We are pleased to announce that Thursday’s retesting of negative residents and staff revealed no new cases of COVID-19, and as a result, Fraser Health has declared the outbreak over,” said Janice Miller, Manager, Marketing and Community Relations with Bria Communities who manages The Waterford. “Over the next number of days, life at The Waterford will begin to slowly return to the way it was before the outbreak.” Miller said self-isolation is over for all resi-

dents, the dining room will be open with social distancing measures in place, housekeeping will resume, small group recreation activities will resume with an emphasis on wearing masks, social distancing, and hand sanitizing for those involved. “Residents who have had COVID-19 have some level of immunity to the virus, however, residents who have not, are still at risk. With this in mind, we continue to strongly encourage all residents to abide by the current province-wide health orders, to wear a mask while in common areas, maintain six feet of social distance and practice good hand hygiene,” added Miller. “Residents with a social ‘bubble’ inside The Waterford are asked to limit interactions with those outside

their bubble as per the provincial health orders.” Miller said Bria Communities has no specific news on when residents will be vaccinated, but are encouraged by the provincial government’s announcement that they will prioritize vaccinating seniors over the age of 80 in late February. “Once again, we want to note that we are especially thankful to our staff team for their calm and diligent response during this outbreak,” she said. “Their consistency brought peace of mind to residents and their family members alike during a very stressful time. They are truly health care heroes who wear PPE instead of capes and have made an enormous difference in the lives of each resident over the past three weeks.”

Discarded needles a common sight at local beaches MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Be careful the next time you let your children go beachcombing at Boundary Bay. That’s what one local resident suggests after she and a neighbor discovered three discarded needles during their separate morning walks on Monday. “I pick up plastic (waste) off the beach every morning and an equally environmentally conscious neighbour found two needles this morning as well,” explained Jennifer Keskula who is very familiar with the problem when she was a City of Vancouver employee and represented the Vancouver Parks Board on a needle sticks committee. “Parents should be mindful of where their children are putting their hands.” The needles were discovered on the beach in Keskula’s neighbourhood, just north of the Boundary Bay boat

ramp. She is convinced all three came in with the tide following a storm that brought in much more debris than usual. However, it was an earlier find this winter that prompted a call to Metro Vancouver when she found a needle at Centennial Beach that looked to be freshly discarded and contained blood. “It wasn’t in a tidal area, it was located in a raised area near the regional park where the water just doesn’t reach that high,” she continued. “It’s not just the needles I’m finding, it’s the paraphernalia they hand out with the kits at the safe injection sites like empty sterilized water containers and wipes. It’s too much of a coincidence.” Keskula added she certainly has seen a significant uptick of traffic at the beach since the start of the pandemic. “I think people are little naïve about the location and think something like that happens here but it does,” she says.

Fraser Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak over at Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre in Delta. “With the implementation of comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in care facilities, there are no longer any COVID-19 cases at this location,” said Fraser Health in a news release. The outbreak at the 296-bed facility was declared in early November. During the outbreak, sadly 13 residents died as a result of COVID-19. On Friday, once the outbreak was declared

over, Scott Fielding, vice president or operations, quality and clinical supports with The Good Samaritan Society, who manage Delta View Care Centre, sent a letter to all residents and their families. “I am happy to report that the COVID-19 outbreak for the front building of our care home has been declared over, meaning the outbreak is over for the entire site,” said Fielding. “I know the past few months have not been easy for our residents, their loved ones or our employees, and I would like to thank each of you for your patience, understanding and support as we have managed this outbreak.”

A composting facility which had been the cause of angst for East Ladner residents for years, will have its regional district licence amended. Delta council on Monday approved a staff recommendation for the city to support a proposal by GFL Environmental Composting to amend its licence with Metro Vancouver to reflect that it’s now a fully-enclosed composting facility. The site has been the subject of numerous odour complaints over an extended period. Staff noted there are no changes proposed in the amendment application to the types and total quantity of compostable feedstock allowed to be accepted for composting. The current and pro-

posed licence remains at 150,000 tonnes per year at the 72nd Street facility, while all components of the composting process are now within fully enclosed buildings that are under negative air pressure with all exhaust air being directed through a biofilter for odour treatment prior to discharge. Screening of the compost also occurs within the building and the only activity that is now permitted outside is the blending of screened compost to produce topsoil mixes. City manager Sean McGill said any request to amend the licence to add more tonnes currently permitted, or a change in materials, would need to go to council for approval. A staff report notes that the number of odour complaints where GFL has been identified as

The licence amendment is to reflect the newly upgraded GFL facility and processes in East Ladner but does not change the types or quantity of material allowed. the potential source are decreasing as the new facility completes its commissioning process, and that adjustments to the processes and control systems at the facility are continuing to ensure they are performing as designed. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos during council’s discussion said she could still smell a foul odour while out for a recent walk in the area.

Meanwhile, the B.C. Environmental Appeal Board is still reviewing of the appeals of the Metro Vancouver air quality permit by GFL Environmental and a number of area residents. The staff report notes it’s expected a decision from the Environmental Appeal Board will be released in the coming months.

BCTF, Delta school district wants FSA tests scrapped SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation is calling on parents to have their children excused from writing the upcoming annual Foundation Skills Assessment tests, saying students are facing immense pressure due to COVID-19 and teachers do not want to add to that stress. In an open letter to parents this week, Teri Mooring, noting the results are misused by a private organization to rank schools based on a very narrow measure, said the tests take valuable time and much needed resources away from classroom learning and undermines the ability to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students. “Now is the time for

building community and creating supportive class environments after the pandemic disrupted inclass learning and altered our students’ lives. The FSA tests do not count toward your children’s marks and they do not help students learn or teachers teach,” wrote Mooring. “Teachers do not believe the FSA is a reliable method of measuring individual progress. Teachers are concerned with the misuse of data from these tests. FSA data rarely results in more funding and resources to meet our students’ needs. However, the Fraser Institute has used the data to unfairly and inappropriately rank schools.” The provincial government has been administering the FSA tests in writing and numeracy to all students in grades 4 and 7 since 2000.

Parents can notify their children’s schools if they wish to have their child opt out from writing them. While the Delta school board hasn’t gone so far as to suggest parents do so, the school board has conveyed concerns about the FSA and is calling on the province to come up with a more effective measure of student progress. Trustees last fall voted unanimously in favour of initiating education partner consultation to elicit feedback about their concerns with the FSA and ask for input on what forms of assessment they feel would better serve students in the district. Delta school trustee Laura Dixon said a new assessment method needs to be proposed to the education ministry which better reflects trends and how school districts can continue to improve.

DELTA, LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP UP THE PRESSURE Our community has spoken and now the Delta Hospice Society says “they will evacuate the Irene Thomas Hospice facility by the required date so there will be no disruption in patient care”. While this sounds promising, let’s not lose sight of the fact that there are services and assets to be protected for inclusive care and counselling services that our community needs. Become a Delta Hospice Society member now in order to continue the fight to:

Reflect our Community’s Values in Supportive Care

Stop the Endless Litigation The current board’s rejection of local applicants has led to a hearing in the Supreme Court of British Columbia and four hearings in the BC Court of Appeal. They have now sought leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada! When will it stop? How does this support patient care and services? How does this Board of Directors justify barring local residents from membership and then turn around and sign up thousands of members from outside our community?

Did you know that the Harold and Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care provides grief and bereavement counselling and support to anyone in our community who needs it? People accessing grief and bereavement counselling need to know they will be welcomed without exception and without judgment at such a vulnerable time.

The Charity Shoppe is a $2.9 million asset Protect the Assets of the Society for Patient Care and Supportive Services for the Community

Unconditional Care

The Hospice Charity Shoppe property was purchased through community donations and has always been intended to support the operations of the Centre for Supportive Care and the Hospice. When running at capacity, the thrift store provides an annual income of approximately $800,000. We need to ensure these assets and income have oversight by a board of directors who reflect the values and priorities of our community.

Elect Board Members who represent the wishes of our community Only as a Delta Hospice Society member, can you cast a vote to replace this Board of Directors with people who will be responsible and accountable to you as a member. Delta Hospice Society was never intended to be a religious organization and only the members of the Society can vote to stop the current board from changing the Constitution and Bylaws to something our community does not support.

Editor’s Note

I

IAN JACQUES

t has been a tough few months for seniors, their caregivers and families in our community. Four separate COVID-19 outbreaks hit Delta View Care Centre in East Ladner, The Waterford in Tsawwassen and KinVillage in Tsawwassen. Sadly a number of residents passed away in these facilities while many other residents and staff members tested positive for COVID-19 and were forced into self-isolation. This past weekend though, there was some positive light on the horizon as Fraser Health declared the outbreaks over at Delta View and The Waterford, with the hopes that KinVillage will also not be too far behind. There is also positive light coming from many in our community as they show tremendous love and support for the residents, in particular at The Waterford. I’m so impressed with the spirit and love shown by Grade 7 Chalmers Elementary student Carys Woolford, who last week delivered 110 hand painted “happy” rocks for every resident. She collected the rocks in her backyard and then spent two weekends and a couple of odd evenings painting them. Each one also came with a hand written note with her well wishes. Care packages have also been sent by South Delta Baptist Church and Augustine House, another senior community in Ladner to The Waterford. Then there are Beach Grove elementary teachers Joanne Calder and Nancy Klassen who, along with their students, showed kindness and love by making friendship bracelets for Waterford residents. The students previously wrote letters in December with special Christmas greetings as well. The letters and now the bracelets have fostered an incredible bond between the students and their senior friends. What an amazing showing of inspiration by these teachers and students. It is heartwarming to see this community come together when there is a need.

Cancel clean-up? Forever? Say it ain’t so!

S

pring clean-up has been canceled this year, as it was last year, for obvious reasons. Council has decided to allow for large item pick-up program in its place, where you can arrange for up to six big things, such as a mattress, a couch or an appliance, to be disposed of for free. Yes, it’s more flexible, come and take this thing, at my convenience, so I don’t have to store it until next April. Plus it saves me the headache of trying to figure out how to get rid of it, whatever it may be. But replacing spring cleanup? Forever? Please say it ain’t so… For many, spring clean-up is an event. We spend weeks deciding what will end up at the curb (or in some cases it’s a quick realization), where a steady stream of slow-moving cars pass by to see if there’s anything salvageable. I’ve heard of people who pick up old bikes and harvest for parts to make a new one for someone deserving. I have a neighbour who collects wheels and metal tubing. He makes amazing contraptions out

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

of it, including a trailer for a friend’s kayak. Many find other treasures to take home, repurpose or save until next spring, where it ends up on the curb again. It is the largest, most efficient recycling program around. A few years ago, I pushed out an old, rear projection TV, having finally replaced it with something new. I could have taken it to the recycling depot, but wanted to see if anyone else could use it. Sure enough, someone came by and told me the new TV’s didn’t have the connections for his son’s video games. Here’s the power cord, here’s the remote, and can I help you load it in your truck? Otherwise, it’s at the recycling

depot, being dismantled, instead of being used and appreciated by someone else. For smaller stuff, today’s options are donating to the thrift store, or my new favourite thing, Varage Sale. It’s like an online garage sale, but faster to search through. I’ve picked up a few great items from there. But it’s not the same. As soon as it’s safe enough, spring clean-up will bring us out of our homes and give us another reason to re-connect, after this long, dark period in our history. It’s the sign of better weather to come, and better days ahead, and back to something normal. It’s so much more than just chucking out your crap. Please let us celebrate spring clean-up 2022. It’s part of the soul of Delta. Hey, look, a garden hose! I can fix that… Brad Sherwin, MBA is a long-time resident of South Delta, and has over 30 years’ experience in marketing, public relations and business strategy. Letters

Please step aside and allow everyone to heal The following is an open letter sent to the current board of Delta Hospice and copied to Delta Optimist: Please, step down as the board of the Irene Thomas Hospice, so that this much needed facility can truly represent what the community of Delta helped to build. The current residents and their families should not have to move so that you can hold on to an out-dated, far-right belief that residents should not be able to exercise their legal rights to access MAid. My father’s wishes did not include Maid, yet because you will not cooperate with the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) or represent what the community wants, my father was going to have to move. My family has no doubt that your actions contributed to stress

and anguish for him. We were having to discuss whether we move him now or when he would be weaker in the coming weeks and if he could survive it. We didn’t have to make that decision because he passed away before we had to. This is cruel and undue stress and suffering that you are causing families. As I told Angelina Ireland, when she unexpectedly called my cell phone the morning before my father died, just because you repeat that your position is about palliative care and not personal religious beliefs, over and over again, doesn’t make it true. The personal beliefs of the board and supporters does not represent the majority of the population, even for those who are religious. A small minority should not determine the

future of care at the Irene Thomas Hospice. An Ipsos poll conducted Jan. 21 to 27, 2020 indicated that 86 per cent of Canadians support MAiD and further that: “Self-identified religious association does not seem to play a large role; 86 per cent of those reporting a Catholic identity and 79 per cent of those reporting a Protestant Christian identity would also support MAID, given the above concrete circumstance.” We need to believe in the possibility that the Irene Thomas Hospice can continue operating uninterrupted during the transition to the FHA and we need to continue to put the pressure on the board and its supporters to stop ruining this cherished place that the community built. Vaccine roll out is a farce Editor: The incompetent COVID-19 vaccine roll out shows how under qualified Trudeau’s ministers are. What a farce that a rich country like Canada with modern highly-efficient distribution systems in place has to endure the pathetic bumbling of inexperienced ministers trying to reinvent the so-called wheel. Why on earth would anyone think the Canadian Armed Forces has a clue on how to distribute millions of doses of vaccine? Companies like Westons, who own major drug store chains like Shoppers, with over 1,500 pharmacies and hundreds of grocery stores, know very well how to move product all over the country. In fact there are over 10,000 phar-

macies in Canada. Why not place millions of doses into all the existing pharmacies to vaccinate virtually everyone quickly? Ten thousand pharmacies vaccinating 100 people per day would be 1,000,000 injections per day. In 37 days job done. OK yes this is a perfect world example, but on a more modest level just inoculating 25 people per day per pharmacy, would have the job done in about four months slightly better than what was going on at the moment. Yes these ministers probably have never actually got a flu shot at a pharmacy or they would know that a much better solution is begging to be part of the solution if only they could figure it out. Hospice decision is political, unethical

Editor: Fraser Health’s hands should be slapped for moving out of serving the public for health and playing with political toys to the detriment of citizens’ health. I expect most people who have chosen palliative care do so because they don’t want Maid,

and even if they have a change of mind, a few yards to Delta Hospital would give them plenty of opportunity to receive MAid. This is not about medical issues, it is entirely political. And not only that, entirely unethical. Defunding and not renewing their

land lease even though the entire building came through funds from citizens. If we let the government get away with this, what other lobby groups are going to slither in and destroy worthy organizations who serve the public? Audrey Martin

We all deserve more

Editor: Re Editor’s Note: Teachers deserve more (Optimist, Jan. 21) I fully agree that teachers and students deserve to be in a safe and welcoming space. They do deserve more; indeed we all deserve more. Even though we are still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada should be planning for a Commission of Inquiry (Royal Commission) to examine all aspects of our collective response to the pandemic. Why? Because we will undoubtedly be

faced with more pandemics and we need to do better, much better. Health professionals and citizens across the country have emphasized a need for improvement. The Commission would examine aspects that have already been highlighted by many as deficient such as: long-term care, border closings and travel restrictions, automated mandatory contact tracing, transparency of public case data, enforcement of pandemic regulations, procuring and distributing vaccines and ongo-

ing funding for virus and pandemic research. This is not an exhaustive list. While there may be some differences in our pandemic response for certain regions of Canada, there are many aspects where we should have a common approach across the country and an expedited Commission would help identify these and set us on a path of improvement in 2022. Contact your MLA and MP today. We simply can’t have about 20,000 Canadians die from each pandemic. Keith Munro

Editor: After only three years on the job, Julie Payette resigned only to “try” to save face before getting fired and getting a 150K annual pension and a 206K annual expense account to boot, both for life! In the private sector she would get zero when resigning or be terminated for cause. Change the Government General’s Act, to avoid this type of government troughing going forward, just like laws and policies are changed or updated when they do not make sense. I can see that former excellent Governor Generals such as David Johnston do good work for the country. However, a pension should be

“earned” over time and not a reward for messing up in a short period of time. Sadly, and to make matters worse, dedicated employees have left and lost their jobs because of her and her cohort’s abusive behaviour and toxic work environment. These employees had the courage to speak up only to find out that their former abuser is riding off in the sunset (or should I say “fly off in space”) with a fat pension. Julie Payette might want to consider refusing the pension and maintain some level of integrity. What about her assistant abuser, Assunta Di Lorenzo, is she cashing in as well? It is beyond comprehension. Explain this to all

the Canadians who are scraping by, lost their jobs or businesses in these challenging times. No wonder Canadians get infuriated and lose all faith in politicians and government. Of course Prime Minister Fluffy does not answer any questions, refuses to accept any level of responsibility and happily dances around questions as he always does and simply cuts another cheque. All of this nonsense on the heels of many elected officials blissfully ignoring their own imposed COVID-19 restrictions only to disappear to a beach somewhere to tan their hypocritical butts. The sad thing is that we reap what we sow. Hans Verbeek

Thank you for 25 years of supporting Delta Hospital and ensuring the best of health for all who live and work in Delta.

Delta city staff expect to be busy with calls from residents inquiring about their annual home owner grants and explaining a change by the B.C. government. That’s according to a staff memo presented to council earlier this month about the provincial government’s recently announced legislation to amend the Home Owner Grant Act, which will result in municipalities no longer accepting home owner grant applications. The province will assume full responsibility for the administration of the Home Owner Grant program and all home owners will have to apply directly to the province either online or by phone. According to the province, the amendments are the first step to centralizing the program for

The province also notes centralizing the program within the B.C. government will ensure homeowners receive the grant amount they are eligible for, such as the additional grant for seniors or persons with a disability. An automated approval process for grants is to result in quicker application processing, which is

to help prevent ineligible homeowners from being penalized for late property tax payment. It’s also to remove an administrative burden from municipalities. Cities have been instructed to direct home owners to www.gov. bc.ca/homeownergrant. The government also recently announced the threshold for the 2021 homeowner grant has been set at $1.625 million, a $100,000 increase over last year.

Parents and students are working hard to ensure that the Grad class of 2021 at Delta Secondary will have a time to remember while also taking the necessary COVID-19 precautions. Faced with another year of uncertainty due to the pandemic, DSS grads will not have any of their usual final school year activities including what is a tradition in South Delta – the red carpet walk and dry grad after-party. “As in prior years, 2021 grad families still wish to find a way to make sure their sons and daughters are honoured and celebrated for their 13 years of hard work and dedication,” said DSS grad committee chair Denise Sheridan. “This year’s planning committees are working hard to find a path forward that respects the COVID-19 provincial health orders, which is no simple task. Currently, despite having been in school since September, the health orders continue to require no social gatherings of any size. Grad families are hoping that our community will be in a position to allow gatherings of groups of at least 50 by May 28. “With a little bit of elbow grease, deep digging into the creative

brain centres, and sprinkling of good vibes, the hope is that our grads will be able to celebrate with some of their longtime friends and peers just once in their final year.” Sheridan said whether or not the health orders change allowing communities to open up a bit, the various DSS planning committees are still busy working on a plan B, which requires a substantial amount of funding. “Typically, our grad parent/guardian community coordinated numerous in-person events all of which were significant fundraisers for dry grad,” she said. “This year, the fundraisers available are severely limited and no amount of creativity will make up for the funding shortfall. We, as an executive, are hoping the Ladner community will support our fundraising efforts and our event plans. We do have a plan in the works and it will need the business community to help us bring it to fruition.” All who support Dry Grad 2021 will be recognized on the dry grad social media platforms and website, and in a full page thank you ad in the Optimist at the end of the year. If you are able to help out this year’s Dry Grad, please reach out to: fundraising@dssgrad.com.

The City of Delta has just updated the list of upcoming community events that have been cancelled, postponed or going virtual due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which is well into its second wave in B.C. The list goes until the end of August. City staff say they’re continuing to work with organizers to develop alternate ways to hold as many events as feasibly possible virtually. In many cases, planning for events later in the summer have not begun. Parks, recreation and culture director Ken Kuntz told council earlier this month that the city will try to be as creative as it can to hold as many events as possible, just not in large, in-person gatherings. He also said they’re hoping each event will be unique. Events next month such as Heritage Week and Delta Idol will be virtual while Battle of the Badges, the annual hockey game between Delta Police and Delta Fire held on Pink Shirt Day, has been cancelled. Other events down the road such as the Easter Parade in Ladner Village and Delta’s Trades and Technical Fair are

also cancelled, while the grand opening of the Douglas J Husband Discovery Centre has been postponed. Beyond that, other events such as the Ladner Pioneer May Days, as of now, is to be virtual as well, while others such as the North Delta Family Days are still to be determined. The Boundary Bay Airshow and Tour de Delta are among those other events that have already been cancelled. Further updates for events will be provided by the city as more information on the state of the pandemic is known. For the complete current list of events that are either cancelled or going strictly virtual, see: www.delta.ca.

B.C. to delay second COVID-19 vaccine doses by one week amid supply shortages TYLER ORTON

B u s i n e s s i n Va n c o u ve r

B.C. health officials will delay the second doses of vaccines fighting COVID-19 yet again amid ongoing supply shortages. The first and second doses of the Pfizer Inc. and Moderna Inc. vac-

cines will now be administered 42 days apart for the time being. B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry revealed the change to the vaccine rollout Monday (Jan. 25) after she was informed over the weekend that there will be less Pfizer supply than initially expected

for the first week of February. Pfizer informed Canadian officials last week that it would not be sending any vaccine doses to the country this week as the pharmaceutical giant attempts to revamp its manufacturing capacity in Europe. Henry did not state

how much vaccine is expected from Pfizer next week. Pfizer originally recommended a 21-day gap between the first and second shots, and Moderna originally recommended 28 days. Both now recommend a 28-day, but Henry emphasized in early

January that evidence shows that the vaccines are still effective even if that gap is extended further. B.C. extended that gap to 35 days in a bid to administer as many first doses as possible. But that gap has now been extended to 42 days as a result of the Pfizer shortage. Moderna has not throttled its deliveries to Canada, however, Ottawa is depending on a larger number of Pfizer orders in the early days of the vaccination efforts. As of Monday, B.C. has administered 119,850 doses: 87,788 doses from Pfizer and 32,062 from Moderna. Last week, B.C. unveiled its plans for vaccinating the general population once the most vulnerable groups receive their doses through to the end of March. The province has been

able to administer doses to 33,025 staff at longterm care centres and 25,701 residents of those centres. From February to March, the province will focus mainly on administering doses to seniors over 80, hospital staff and Indigenous seniors over 65. Inoculations of the general population will commence in April, zeroing in on British Columbians 79 years old and younger in descending five-year age brackets (e.g. 75-79 first; 70-74 second). If more vaccines are approved (only the Pfizer and Moderna have been given regulatory approval in Canada), the province also plans on expanding vaccination to those aged 18-64 who are front-line essential workers or who work in specific workplaces or industries. Those doses would be administered sometime in the spring.

Everything you need to know about COVID-19 vaccines in B.C. STEFAN LABBÉ, DIANE STRANDBERG

Tr i - C i t y N e w s

The race is on to get as many people in B.C. and vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible. As the government unveils the next steps in the biggest vaccination campaign in B.C. history, we answer your questions: WHEN CAN I GET THE VACCINE? Vaccination clinics have been set up at major hospitals across B.C. as part of the first in a fourphase plan announced by the province. PHASE 1 - December to January Those first in line during Phase 1 of the province’s vaccination campaign include front-line health-care workers in COVID wards and surgical units, paramedics and emergency department personnel. By Jan. 23, Fraser Health had immunized more than 6,000 medical and support staff, including those in dedicated support services in emergency departments, critical care units and COVID-19 units. Health-care workers have also been going into long-term care and assisted living facilities to vaccinate current and incoming residents, as well as staff and essential

visitors. Remote and isolated First Nations communities are also receiving vaccinations as part of the campaign’s first tier, which is expected to continue into February. PHASE 2 - February to March In Phase 2 of the vaccine rollout, lasting from February to March, the immunization program will work through seniors in the community, focusing on those age 80 and above. Other groups slated to receive the vaccine in the second stage include: * Indigenous communities not vaccinated in first priority group, especially seniors over 65 * People without a home or in a shelter * Provincial correctional facilities * Adults in group homes or mental health residential care * Staff and recipients of long term home support * Hospital staff, community doctors and medical specialists. Starting mid- to lateFebruary, health officials will be reaching out to these populations with information on how to pre-register for a vaccination. PHASE 3 - April to June By April, the immunization campaign will transition into Phase 3. With age as the “singlegreatest factor for severe

illness and death,” Phase 3 will begin vaccinating those ages 79 to 75, before working backwards in five-year increments all the way down to people 60 years old. Anyone who misses their place in line - say if their health doesn’t permit it at the time - is eligible to be vaccinated at any time thereafter. By the end of Phase 3, any extra vaccine supply is expected to work its way down the queue to other groups, including such essential service workers as first responders, teachers, bus drivers, and even those working in grocery stores. PHASE 4 - July to September Phase 4 is expected to begin in July 2021. At this point, vaccines will be rolled out to the wider population, starting with those between age 59 and 55 and working back in five-year age groups until everyone over 18 is vaccinated. Throughout the massive vaccination campaign, the province’s health-care workers will still be managing a pandemic, and that could necessitate vaccinating this younger cohort earlier. Should an outbreak or cluster occur, say in work camps, prisons or factories, Immunize BC Operations Centre is reserving the flexibility to vaccinate clusters of

people in order to control the spread of the virus. The four-phase plan is based on already approved vaccines and Henry said Friday that the province has contingency plans should more vaccines get approved. WHERE CAN I SIGN UP? Most British Columbians do not have access to a COVID-19 vaccine yet. But come March, segments of B.C.’s wider population can pre-register online or by phone. Anyone who pre-registers will get a reminder two to four weeks before they are eligible to book an appointment, with

those deemed “clinically extremely vulnerable” first in line in April. More information will be provided in the coming weeks, confirmed ImmunizeBC head Dr. Penny Ballem on Friday, Jan. 22. Last week, Provincial Medical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said MSP databases provide British Columbians’ ages and places of residences, and that has helped to decide where and how to allocate resources and prioritize populations as the months go by. By March, vaccination clinics will be set up in 172 communities across B.C. Depending on the

size of the community, vaccination clinics will take over stadiums, convention centres, arenas, community halls and school gymnasiums. Mobile clinics in selfcontained vehicles will roll into some remote communities and mobile teams will be available to reach home-bound individuals and hard to reach populations. More details on how and where these clinics in Delta will be set up will be released by the City of Delta, Fraser Health and the Delta Division of Family Practice in the coming weeks. -with files from Ian Jacques/Delta Optimist.

Delta police dog retires on a high note On her last night shift, Dec. 28, 2020, police dog Dezi nabbed a suspect in North Delta wanted on three warrants. She and her handler, Const. Jason Martens, chased him through back yards, over fences and finally nabbed him in a cul-de-sac. “She’s amazingly fast, but it’s time for her to retire while she’s still healthy,” said Martens.

He’s also taking the opportunity to move on after 10 years with the RCMP-led Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service, and has gone back to front line patrol work with the DPD. Dezi, a nine-and-ahalf-year-old German Shepherd, is now living as a family dog, joining Marten’s other retired

But his knees are a bit sore after 10 years of hoisting 75 pound dogs over fences, as they chased bad guys, found missing persons and helped investigate break and enters and other offences. It’s physically

demanding work, but you can’t let your dog down, he explains. “It’s one of the best jobs in policing,” he said. “When you know your dog is on that track – there’s not many feelings like that.” The duo have had many success stories. Once they were called to find a suicidal person, who’d fled after police were called to a person lying on the train tracks.

“Officers tried to apprehend him so they could safely bring him to hospital, but he took off down the tracks,” added Martens. “It was dark, and they couldn’t find him, so Dezi and I came to help. We were following the scent down the tracks and suddenly Dezi jutted into the bramble bushes, and gave me happy feet.” A train was coming, so Martens thinks they found the man just in time. In another success story, the pair were called to help locate a stolen truck and trailer. Dezi and Martins found the truck – and the suspect unloading the tools. “We were able to sneak in on our bellies in the field – I coordinated containment, but the suspect was just getting into the truck and about to drive away before other officers could get in place,” said Martens. “I put Dezi over the barbed wire fence and she took off down the driveway – launched herself at the suspect before he even got the door shut.” Police were able to recover thousands in stolen goods in that

instance. Even after all this time, Martins remains impressed by how accurate police dog noses are. “Once we were called out to file involving a knife near a skytrain station,” he says. “We needed to find the knife, but there was so much garbage and foot traffic. I gave her the search command and within 10 minutes she was indicating into a concrete flower pot. I don’t know if we could have found that knife without her.” Although Martens is no longer with the dog unit, he now volunteers in his own time for charities for retired Canadian police dogs – Ned’s Wish and Support Retired Legends. Unlike their handlers, police dogs don’t have pensions, and often have significant medical needs later in life due to the physical stresses of their former jobs. Martens’ older retired dog – Tyson – benefitted from Ned’s Wish when he required expensive surgery due to a workrelated injury. Now Martens is giving back to help other retired dogs.

LIFESTYLES

Season of Zoom continues for Delta Photo Club

Delta Photo Club’s “Season of Zoom” continues at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 3 with “In Search of the Perfect Flower Photograph” by awardwinning photographer Kasandra Sproson. “Trying to create the perfect flower image has become an endless journey for me as I try to portray the essence, the soul, of my subjects,” said Sproson. “In this presentation I will share how and why I choose a subject and which style will best suit the message I hope to create. Topics we will discuss include techniques and tools I use to create in camera images (SOOC) or to prepare for those that will I will process into artwork in Photoshop.” Sproson has always had a special fascination with flowers. After retiring she began using photography to explore their world intimately. Her fine art imagery is a visual expression of her spiritual and emotional connection with the world, created through artistic photographic techniques and digital enhancements that often reflect a dreamlike or ethereal quality. Her work has been recognized nationally and locally. She has won numerous medals and awards through the Canadian Association of Photographic Arts (CAPA) and sponsored competitions. To attend this Zoom presentation you must already be or want to become a member of the Delta Photo Club by filling out the membership form at: http://deltaphotoclub. com/member-sign-upform, or attend as a guest by sending an e-transfer for $10 to: treasurer@ deltaphotoclub.com by 10 a.m. on Feb. 3.

Delivering happiness to seniors

Tsawwassen’s Carys Woolford brightens residence hit with COVID outbreak MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Carys Woolford wanted to reach out to a seniors’ residence in her hometown that was going through a tough time and she made sure no one was going to be left out. Last week, the Grade 7 Late French Immersion student at Chalmers Elementary delivered 110 hand painted “happy” rocks for every resident at The Waterford. The Tsawwassen seniors’ community had been dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak since late December that grew to over 60 cases at one point, involving residents and staff members. According to Woolford’s proud mom Ryanne, her daughter collected the rocks in the backyard and then spent two weekends and a couple of odd evenings painting them. Each one also came with a handwritten note with her well wishes. The idea originated last spring during the early days of the pandemic lockdown when Carys’ grandmother surprised her by leaving some “happy” rocks in the family garden. Carys and her little brother then decided to do a ‘happy rock scavenger hunt’ at her nana and papa’s place that concluded with a socially distanced “hello” at the end of the trail. Carys was later involved in a project called ‘Stories of Kindness’ created by the WITS, an educational anti-bullying

program, and the co-founder of pink shirt day. In December, she was asked to contribute a video about an act of kindness and she decided to extend her ‘happy rock’ idea by sharing it with The Waterford. “Of course, she wasn’t able to do a scavenger hunt, but she hand-painted the rocks and included a little note with each one to bring them happiness and to let the seniors know she was thinking of them,” explained Ryanne. “This whole thing has been a great experience for Carys and once she sees the pictures of the residents after they have received their rocks, I’m sure she will appreciate even more just how amazing this act of kindness has been!” The Waterford residents and staff were certainly touched by Woolford’s efforts. She is part of an outpouring that includes care packages from the South Delta Baptist Church and the Augustine House Society. “Carys’ happy rocks are just so fantastic. We have really felt supported by the entire community. So many people have reached out with such kind words,” said Janice Miller, marketing and community relations manager for Bria Communities that operates The Waterford. “To see kids just wanting to love seniors like this and feeling a lot of compassion and connected to seniors is really a wonderful thing. It makes our hearts excited for the future.”

Free family scavenger hunt underway until Feb. 20 A free family scavenger hunt is taking place in Delta over the next month. The scavenger hunt includes 20 fun activities to do in and around Delta. Booklets can be picked up any time from a Delta Library (Tsawwassen, Ladner or North Delta). The activities are designed to be done as a family and all families are welcome to join in the fun. Families should bring their completed booklet back to any of the three Delta library locations by Feb. 20. The first 400 children to do so will receive a brand-new book, appro-

priate for their age. Each family will also be given a bag filled with information about programs and services for children and families in Delta – as well as some surprise goodies. “The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on families and we at Delta Kids wanted to bring some joy during these challenging times,” said Delta Kids coordinator Andrea Lemire. “Normally we hold an in-person event on Valentine’s Day, but this year we had to get creative. This scavenger hunt is meant to give families some fun activities

to do together, a way to celebrate Family Literacy Day IJan. 27), Valentine’s Day, and Family Day.” Delta Kids is a subcommittee of the Delta Child and Youth Committee (CYC), a committee of non-profit, government and community agencies and organizations that work to improve the lives of children, youth and families in Delta. The Delta Child and Youth committee would like to acknowledge and thank the Delta Foundation for the funding they provided to purchase the books.

PRIVATE SCHOOL

Tips for making the switch from public to private school

Parents have many different reasons for sending their children to private schools. Switching from public schools to private schools can require a significant emotional and social adjustment on the part of students and their families. Transitioning to private school also may require adjusting to an entirely new educational philosophy and curriculum. These tips can help make the transition from public school to private school go smoothly. Class size Class size plays a significant role when parents decide to send their children to private school. According to Noodle, an online education search and rating resource, public school classes may include 20 students or more, with some even as large as 34 students at full capacity. Private schools tend to have much smaller class sizes and a smaller teacherto-student ratio. This can translate into more individualized attention for each student. It also may mean heightened scrutiny, which is something students may quickly discover and not be accustomed to from their public school days.

Switching from public schools to private schools can require a significant adjustment on the part of students and their families.

Students who thrive with more frequent teacher feedback may like the change to private school. Others who prefer not being in the spotlight may need more time to adjust. Take a tour and get involved Familiarizing oneself with the school

can make the first day of school that much easier. Most schools will offer tours for prospective new families; otherwise, parents can reach out to the administration to schedule private walk-throughs. Some private schools also pair up potential new students with

current student ambassadors to provide a students’ perspective, which can be very helpful. Families also can attend schoolsanctioned functions, volunteer for parent-teacher association committees or encourage students join sports teams or extracurricular clubs early on to help with making friends. Be open to change Many private schools do not have to conform to state- or province-sanctioned curriculums. This can come as a shock to students who were working on a certain math or language arts program at their previous schools. Other changes to expect may be uniforms, religious-based foundations and classes, and less leniency when rules are broken. Some schools also may be male-only or female-only. These issues can be discussed before the first day of school. Keeping an open mind and getting the support of parents can help students navigate the transition from public to private school. -Metro Creative

a news release notes that it knows that during the COVID-19 pandemic some patients are not checking in with their family doctor, and not keeping on top of their medical care, which is a challenge, particularly when they have ongoing chronic conditions that should be monitored. Often this is because patients either aren’t sure whether their doctor is available or how they should best connect with them in the event they will be receiving care in person or by telephone/ telehealth, Doctors of B.C. states. “It’s very important to continue seeing your family doctor for ongoing care, especially if you have long-term or chronic conditions,” said Dr. Matthew Chow, presi-

dent of Doctors of B.C. “Neglecting your treatment or missing medication doses will cause more problems down the road. It’s important you see your family doctor because they know you best and understand your medical history and needs.” For seniors living at home, those with disabilities, or people considering themselves to be at high-risk, it is especially important that they contact their doctor for advice if they have not recently connected, Doctors of B.C. notes. The new one-stop online directory is to enable patients to find up-to-date information on how their doctor is providing virtual and inperson care, how to go about making an appoint-

Lifeline is a unit of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. In Delta, we enable approximately 500 residents of Delta to live independently and secure within their own homes. Volunteers install the equipment and ensure the clients know how to use their Personal Help Buttons. Many calls to Lifeline are solved by responders, therefore preventing unnecessary ambulance calls or visits to the Hospital Emergency Department. Seniors and their families have peace of mind knowing that help is just a click away. Having Lifeline was a great comfort for both myself and my mom. She had cause to use it a couple of times after falling in her home. With Lifeline she was able to alert me and I was there within minutes. I travel often and the installation of Lifeline gave both myself and my mom great peace of mind.... Joan K. Delta, resident.

Doctors of B.C. adds that approximately 70 per cent of B.C. family doctors who provide longitudinal care to their patients are now listed in the directory, with more doctors continuing to be added. Meanwhile, the Delta Division of Family Practice is continuing its recruitment efforts to bring in more doctors. Formed eight years ago by physicians in South Delta and Doctors of B.C., it’s a membership organization supporting local physicians. The Division gives doctors an opportunity to work collaboratively with Fraser Health, the General Practice Services Committee and the Ministry of Health to identify health care needs in the community and develop solutions. “Especially now, the face of health care has changed with the clinical delivery of care that doctors provide due to COVID-19,” said executive director Geri McGrath in an interview last fall. “Some of their practices have moved to virtual care, which for a lot of doctors is a first and it’s a first for patients as well. There has been a shift in the way health care is being delivered in this country because of the pandemic and we’re looking for ways to support our physicians and help support the community.” The doctor’s group has a website called FETCH (For Everything That’s Community Health) that not only helps the public and health care providers access information about community health services, it also links patients looking for a doctor with available family physicians. Patients can sign up to be on a waiting list.

ElderCollege Delta forges ahead with online courses

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a huge challenge for many educational organizations which, like ElderCollege Delta, have for years offered courses in the traditional way through live lectures and in-person classroom experiences. However now, with health and safety concerns at the forefront, it is fortunate that our wired world has made it possible to continue to offer educational programs utilizing the Zoom technology. Although Zoom may be new to a lot of us, it has actually been around for quite a while and currently is being used by many for business, educational, and social purposes. Volunteers are busily putting together a selection of classes for the spring term most of which will be offered via Zoom. Using the Zoom technology ElderCollege can deliver courses directly to each individual’s computer, tablet or phone while in the comfort of their home. This technology is free to use and ElderCollege Delta is offering simple training to members on how to do it. To whet your appetite, here are some of the courses being planned: What’s

Tour of Florence, Paint Your Own Masterpiece, Wrongful Conviction, Will Planning and Confucianism.

ElderCollege is also planning a lineup of technology courses to be offered in-person when small sociallydistanced gatherings become permissible again in our Learning Centre at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. Information on reserving a spot in these classes will be provided along with all the usual registration information that will accompany the full listing of courses. For a nominal $10 annual membership fee and modest individual course fees, ElderCollege learning is affordable, varied and stress free. Please check the website at the end of January and the Optimist in the first week of February for the listing of course offerings. Registration will be open on Feb. 16 both online and via telephone. Do you find it a challenge to be different, especially during the last couple of years? It feels like the world expects us all to have the same opinions, and if we differ we get attacked. I have some biblical advice for you…Save your words for those who will hear your heart. Proverbs 21:23 Watch your words and hold your tongue; you’ll save yourself a lot of grief. At times we can all feel misunderstood. We get frustrated by a wrong judgment, annoyed by a decision that is based on wrong information. Yet often, it’s these moments that are some of our most defining experiences, not because of what was said but because of our response. When Jesus was wrongly accused he didn’t waste words in

to have your say. But ask yourself this question. Will my response heal or hurt this situation? Will my retaliation make me feel better or make the situation better? Who is in charge of my response right now, my feelings or my faith? As hard as it can be, sometimes the best response is no response. Just let it go, knowing God sees it all and is over it all. Trust, instead of stress and save your words for those who will hear your heart and see what’s true. Don’t allow a wrong judgement to drive you to justify yourself. Instead continue to be a blessing. i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Shopping local and keeping dollars locally is always important, but with the ongoing challenges businesses are facing because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is even more important. Local shops and businesses are the fabric of our community. They are among the first organizations to support our schools, sports teams, local charities and beyond. The dollars that are spent locally do get invested back into our community through the hiring of local services, eating in local cafes/restaurants and coming together to support local events and initiatives. Local businesses are the employers for our friends, our neighbours and many in our community. Did you know that approximately 98 per cent of businesses in B.C. are small businesses? When we choose to shop local, we are often choosing to support that 98 per cent of our province and our economy. Local businesses are invested in our community more than just financially. Local business owners are volunteers, philanthropists and support systems for many in the community. “Personally, I choose to support local

E

businesses because I know that the purchases I make in those businesses have the power to change everything,” said Ladner Business Association president Jill McKnight. “During COVID those purchases have the opportunity to change someone’s day completely. It could help them to pay rent, it could allow them to invest in additional training for the employees or it could be part of helping the business grow in a completely new direction.” Shopping local has never been easier. Many local businesses have branched out into online platforms that allow you to purchase online and pick up curbside or local stories will offer delivery services. Local businesses are often willing and able to assist you over the phone to complete your purchase or walk you through your first online shopping experience. As our shopping experiences have changed, so too have the local businesses in their ways of working with you - they will find creative ways to make the shopping experience perfect for you. “Over the past months, it has been encouraging to see our community fully embrace the spirit of shopping locally,” said Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association executive director Michelle Barlow. “Every time you spend your

dollars in a local small business you contribute to their recovery and the recovery of our local economy. Local businesses recirculate $63 of every $100 back into our local economy (Source: LocoBC). Shopping locally has a positive effect not only on our economy but on our community as a whole. It strengthens the connections in our community making it stronger and more resilient. I think the sentiment of “Buy Local or ByeBye Local” is a reality for many communities but if we all try to think “local” first then the many great shops and services in Sunny Tsawwassen will remain strong and vibrant.” Some recent survey statistics show that the past year has been a challenging one for businesses in our community. According to Garry Shearer, executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, a recent survey conducted from Dec. 3 to 18 of area business members: * 72 per cent of businesses saw a decrease in sales in 2020 with 62 per cent seeing their sales drop 25 per cent or more. * 51 per cent of businesses report their operating costs have increased, likely due to the costs associated with new restrictions.

* 22 per cent of businesses report they will close within six months given the current restrictions, government support and operating costs. * 73 per cent of businesses are using some form of a government support program to assist them through COVID-19, this is up from 65 per cent in July. “But there is some optimism for the next 12 months based on the rollout of the vaccine,” he said. “Thirty-six per cent of our members who responded are very optimistic about the next 12 months and 22 per cent plan to hire more local and 63 per cent of our members responded that they have adopted new online marketing tools and strengthened their e-commerce capabilities.” Shopping local means different things to each person. It could mean shopping within Ladner, or South Delta or Delta altogether. It could also mean supporting a company from the Lower Mainland, or from B.C. as a whole, or on the world scale it could mean supporting Canadian made products. The opportunity in front of each of us is to allow a pause when making our purchasing decisions - asking ourselves, how will my purchase today, pay it forward to my greater community.

Markus Thormeyer

Tsawwassen swimmer a Olympian Markus Thormeyer’s ticket to a second straight Olympics is secured. The 23-year-old from Tsawwassen is among six swimmers named to Canada’s Olympic team for the XXXII Summer Games in Tokyo slated to start in July. The COVID19 pandemic interrupting training and decimating the competition calendar led Swimming Canada to invoke the ‘unforeseen circumstances’ clause in its selection process. Thormeyer was the lone male swimmer to earn early entry to the Canadian team, joining Penny Oleksiak, Kylie Masse, Margaret MacNeil, Taylor Ruck and Sydney Pickrem. The former Winskill Dolphins Swim Club standout was eighth in the 200-metre backstroke at the 2019 FINA World Championships. He had earlier made history at the Canadian Swimming Trials with a sweep in the 100-m, 200-m backstroke and the 100-m and 200-m freestyle. The SDSS graduate participated in a relay event at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio when he was just 18.

While health restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have the South Delta Bantam A1 Storm idle from game activity since November, the rep hockey team has used the additional time to give back to its community, including a food bank drive.

Storm making most of COVID season Bantam rep hockey team using lack of games to give back to the community MARK BOOTH

The South Delta Bantam A1 Storm have turned a potentially trying hockey season into a positive one by making a difference in its community. South Delta Minor’s top team for 13-and-14-year-olds had played just four cohort games when new COVID-19 provincial health restrictions halted its schedule back in November. The hope is they can resume playing next month, but five tournaments have been lost along the way including the opportunity to host the Tim Jardine Showcase. Head coach Chris Erhart and his staff have approached the campaign as a unique opportu-

nity beyond the rink. The team’s mission statement “be phenomenal or be forgotten” is what the players cheer out at the start of every practice. “Our program is not only about great hockey players working towards improving and moving onto higher hockey opportunities, but we have really focused on being great people, especially in our community,” Erhart explained. The team collected donations for the South Delta Food Bank back in the fall and just wrapped up a Christmas tree collection campaign that raised $660 for the BC Children’s Hospital. What has really impressed Erhart is his players taking charge of these projects. “They are driving it. We rec-

ommended it at the beginning of the season but the players are driving them now,” he continued. “They are the ones that are chomping at the bit of saying what we can do next for someone. They collectively, as a group, chose B.C. Children’s Hospital as the charity they wanted to support.” On the ice, the coaches are doing their best to provide a variety of training sessions, that have already included outsourcing power skating and goaltending sessions. A shooting clinic is up next with local instructor Ron Johnson. Erhart also launched a 3-on-3 COVID Cup that will now be a monthly competition among the players. Some practices have been live streamed with invitations sent

out to junior scouts. “We have a really good group this year. They are almost like a well-oiled machine. They show up and they work hard. I think for them it’s a great escape to get to rink work hard, have fun and see their buddies,” said Erhart. “As team staff, it’s been tremendous to watch each player’s resiliency in adapting to the ever changing (provincial health order) while maintaining an eagerness to continue working at the sport they all love.” Erhart also praised the contributions of assistant coach Cavin Tilsey. The SDMHA and BC Hockey League alumni not only is passing on his knowledge but serves as a young role model of what the players are striving for.

CLAYTON, Grace Helen September 5, 1925 − December 24, 2020 It is with deep sadness that we announce that Our Mother, Our Dear and Beloved "Amazing" Grace passed away peacefully on December 24, 2020. Grace was predeceased by her loving husband and soul mate, Chuck in 2000. She was also predeceased by her parents, Albert and Margaret Hinson; and her brothers, Frank and Harold; and her dear sister, Shirley. Grace is survived by her sons, Ken (Marilyn) and Terry (Marilyn) of Greater Vancouver; and her daughter, Juanita Hilton (Ed) of Calgary. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Sean (Carrie), Matt (Laura), Julie (Aaron), and Dan (Christina) and their families, including eight great−grandchildren who fondly remember her as Gee Gee. Grace was a favourite Aunty to many nieces and nephews who remember her for her kindness and genuine interest in their lives. Grace was born in South Vancouver and lived there in her childhood and early adult years. In 1944, after marrying her love Chuck, she left for Brandon Manitoba to support Dad in his service with the Air Force. Following the War, she again settled in South Vancouver to start and raise her family. In 1962, She and Dad then fulfilled their dream to build a house in Tsawwassen. Mom lived out her life in the South Delta Community she loved. Mom worked for over twenty years in bookkeeping and payroll for Woodward’s. Our Family "Brand". She was a hard−working, loyal, and very capable employee. Mom was a wonderful, compassionate, and dedicated caregiver to her ageing parents and to her special sister Shirley, and to our Father. Mom was an incredible homemaker and in her gracious way, she made sure the door was always open and welcoming to friends, neighbours, and relatives especially the lifelong friends from St. Mary’s in South Vancouver and the local South Delta Community. The family has wonderful memories of so many family celebrations and Christmas’ were always so special. Mom lived a very full and engaged 95 years. She especially loved her time with family, it was the spark and purpose of her life. As we reflect on Mom’s life, it is fascinating and remarkable to imagine all the worldly changes and challenges she lived through and experienced in her Lifetime. The last five years of Mom’s life were spent as a resident of Delta View Life Enrichment Center. The family is grateful for their wonderful care and compassion. Our Dear Mom will be missed but also remembered with so many fond memories. We Thank you for the Love we shared, Our wonderful Home Life, the Support you always provided, and the Lifelong lessons and Values you have taught us. By request, there will not be a Funeral Service. The Family will be having a private Celebration of Mom’s Life in the Summer.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, on January 8, 2021. Wendy died peacefully at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner at the age of 62, after a courageous four−month battle with cancer. She was much loved and will be greatly missed by her husband, Jim; children, Scott and Lauren; parents, Elda and Elwin "Butch"; sister, Jill (Rick); sister−in− law, Patty (Brian); brother−in−law, Doug; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. We would like to express our gratitude to the friends and relatives who provided ongoing support to Wendy through a difficult and heart−breaking journey over the last few months. She really looked forward to and cherished all her phone calls, messages, and especially the window visits! Our family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of the BC Cancer Surrey Centre, the Surrey Memorial Palliative Care Unit, and especially the staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice for the excellent care they provided. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Foundation. Online condolences may be offered at www.myalternatives.ca

HARDY, Cecil J. October 21, 1942 − January 17, 2021

STERLING, Shirley January 21, 2021

Cecil John Hardy passed away at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta, BC from cancer. Cec is survived by his brother Larry, loving daughters Shannon(Greg), Margo(Steve) and Allison(Nick), his beloved grandchildren Corbin, Holden, Thomas and Makena, his partner Penny Intrieri and her children Shannon and Kurtis. Cec was born in Chilliwack on October 21, 1942, to Lawrence and Rena Hardy, but grew up in Vancouver. This is where he developed his love for cars while working at his dad’s service station which led him to drag racing his 1957 Ford. Cec graduated with a B.Sc. from UBC, completed his teacher training at the University of Toronto and started working in the Delta School District in 1968. He was a math teacher, counsellor and coach at Delta Secondary for many years before he retired from Seaquam Secondary in 1999. Cec raised his family with Judi in Tsawwassen. He enjoyed coaching his daughters’ various sports, collecting and restoring cars and yearly road trips to California and Disneyland. Sunny California held a special place for him, where his excitement meant solo early morning jogs, returning with donuts and an Autotrader, ready to start the day. In retirement, Cec connected with friends on the golf course, restored cars and spent many evenings with Penny at dinner parties. He was always appreciative of a delicious meal, interesting conversations and a good laugh. Cec cheered at his grandchildren’s sporting events, dabbled in the stock market and religiously watched Monday night football and MSNBC. He was proud of his family, passionate about science and math and steadfastly independent. Cec was a compassionate man, especially towards children, teenagers and animals. He was curious about peoples’ stories and always up for an adventure. Cec was his families’ biggest champion, a sympathetic ear and believed in standing up for others. He will be missed, but leaves behind many humorous stories and lifelong lessons. The family really appreciated all the cousins and friends, especially Jim and Bob, as well as the nurses and staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice who supported Cec in his final weeks. In his honour, please consider a donation to Take Back Delta Hospice. A celebration of his life will be planned once Covid−19 restrictions are lifted.

Our hearts are filled with love but our eyes are filled with tears as we announce the passing of our wonderful Mom. Predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Kent and son, Gary; Shirley is survived by her son, Brett (Linda); daughter, Brenda−Gail (Simon); grandchildren, Christopher (Jaclyn), Jennifer, James, David (Melissa), Joshua, and Nathan; and great−grandchildren, Emma, Liam, Audrey, and Jack. Born in Saskatchewan, Mom left a little piece of her heart there when she moved with her family to BC, where she finished high school, fell in love with the mountains and more importantly fell in love with a handsome carpenter. Together they built two houses, raised three children, and enjoyed a happy life together. Mom loved to dance and travel, was an incredible homemaker − always cleaning, baking and cooking and was thrifty to a fault. She was known to take the collars off of my Dad’s work shirts to flip them around and stitch them back on as they "still had life left in them". She volunteered at our schools, canvased for various charities and was very active in her church. Mom was never happier than when the house was filled with family, food and laughter, making Christmas an especially favourite time. The baking began at the beginning of December, but Christmas carols would be played any time of year. Forever the caregiver, Mom watched over her two younger siblings, then her own children, grandchildren, and eventually her Mom and our Dad until his passing in 2001. Love blossomed once again in Mom’s heart eight years ago when Garry was drawn to her home by the aromas of baking. They remained an adorable couple until the end, when Our Lord looked into her eyes, gently smiling, and called out her name. Donations my be made in memory of Shirley to Alzheimer’s BC, the SPCA, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
