THIS IS WHERE YOU BELONG The Harmony Initiative Society aka ‘THIS’ has partnered with the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA) to introduce the first phase of its kindness awareness campaign, “THIS Is Where You Belong”. 500 eco-friendly fashion tote bags will be distributed throughout the Tsawwassen area at participating local businesses with an in-store minimum purchase. In an effort aimed at inspiring harmony while stimulating economic recovery, each tote bag will also contain a one page insert with a message about the importance of kindness, empathy, human compassion, and unity within the community. “It is our hope that this campaign will serve as a fun, accessible reminder to our community that there is both humanitarian and economic value in diversity, equity and inclusion. In our daily lives, we instinctively recognize the beauty of shapes and colours existing in harmony. Let us imagine a world where that same recognition is filtered into our daily human interactions. THIS is about sparking those ice-breaking conversations that lead to positive change.” - Warren Dean Flandez, Co-founder of THIS The TBIA whose mandate supports the business community of Sunny Tsawwassen hopes to align its messaging that kindness, human compassion and understanding is also the cornerstone of exceptional, consistent customer service and is the foundation for a successful business. “Tsawwassen centers around its people, the places where we play and gather to enjoy its natural beauty, and the local small businesses where we have come to know their owners and staff like neighbours. We are a community that values its connections which is why the Tsawwassen BIA is so pleased to support THIS and its message of kindness, compassion, and understanding. Through mutual respect of all the individuals that live, work, and visit our community, Tsawwassen as a whole will flourish.” - Michelle Barlow, Executive Director of the TBIA THIS Is Where You Belong Tote bags will be available while quantities last, and the public is encouraged to take photos with their bags and share them via social media to help spread the word and show solidarity for the concept of basic human kindness. CommunitypaystributetoDaveHamilton Former longtime Delta Optimist general manager loses battle with cancer at 64 IAN JACQUES

Community tributes have been pouring in following the passing of former Delta Optimist general manager Dave Hamilton. A consummate community volunteer and champion for this community’s newspaper, Hamilton lost his battle with prostate cancer passing away last week. Hamilton was 64. Diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer in 2016, Hamilton fought his cancer battle bravely and while undergoing treatment, continued to work at the Optimist until the end of 2019 when he retired after 30-plus years with the paper. Alvin Brouwer, president of Lower Mainland Publishing LP and Glacier Community Media Digital said the company is creating an award in Hamilton’s honour. “The award will be called the Dave Hamilton Service Above Self Award. This will be given to an employee in LMP who does charitable work in the community and goes above and beyond and $5,000 a year will be given in their name to whatever charity they choose,” said Brouwer. “Dave was a leader in the industry. He was one of the most enthusiastic persons who I’ve ever met… really cared about his customers, his colleagues and his community equally. “I still remember one time, early on in our relationship, we were walking in
Ladner Village and I swear every person we passed, he knew everybody. He was so much a part of South Delta. He was involved in everything. He was a great ambassador for our newspaper.” Hamilton`s commitment to community volunteerism was vast with a huge focus on Rotary. Tsawwassen Rotarian John Charbonneau said Hamilton’s commitment to the Rotary “Service Above Self” motto is measured with decades of exemplary contribution that dates back to his joining Rotary in Terrace, then Ladner and as a charter member of The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen in June 1992. “Of the millions of Rotarians, since Rotary began in 1905, few have achieved the measure of Dave’s commitment with 29 years of perfect attendance,” said Charbonneau. “For over 30 years, many new members benefited from Dave’s Rotary knowledge during his commitment to mentor those new to one of the world’s largest community service organizations.” Charbonneau said Hamilton excelled at any role he volunteered for within Rotary’s various job descriptions, including fundraising, public relations, community involvement, and international project support. His efforts included numerous years of contribution as a member of the club’s board of directors, including his role as club president in the 2000/01 Rotary year.

Community heroics avoids potential tragedy in Tsawwassen MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Aileen Noguer was steps away from her hair appointment, while Garry Bansal was busy serving a customer, until their swift and heroic actions helped to avoid a potential tragedy. It was around 3:20 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre last Thursday (April 1) when a driver attempting to park, collided with another vehicle and inadvertently ended up on the sidewalk, running over a pedestrian, in front of the Chopped Leaf restaurant. The car came to a stop on the pedestrian who was pinned under the passenger-side front tire. Noguer watched the whole incident unfold. The local realtor relied on her previous career as a nurse as she rushed over to the trapped victim. “I got to him real fast and he was conscious the whole time. Someone else called 911, but I didn’t know how far away (Emergency Health Services) was and he was struggling saying his chest was hurting. I thought the best decision would be to get the car off of him,” said Noguer. The initial thought was to try and roll the car back, but it didn’t work. About two or three other people attempted to lift up the car, but more help was needed. Bansal was working at the nearby Open Connection cellular store and his colleague Harry Singh saw what had happened. They along with another co-worker Abhayjeet Singh and a customer in the store at the time all rushed outside to help. “The guy was trying to reverse the car but he couldn’t. We thought of lifting the car up,” said Bansal. “One guy (from Anytime Fitness gym) came out and helped too.” There was enough help for the car to be lifted high enough to allow Noguer and an off-duty firefighter to safely move the victim

Garry Bansal, Aileen Noguer and Harry Singh were among a number of “community heroes” that acted swiftly to help a man trapped under a car after an accident in the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre parking lot on April 1. and further attend to him. EHS arrived soon after and the victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. “I want to thank the people nearby who actually lifted the vehicle off of the injured man, and extracted him from under the vehicle, and began performing first aid,” says Insp. Ciaran Feenan, head of Delta Police front line patrol. “Their quick actions may have saved the pedestrian’s life. We’ve since had an update from the hospital, and he is expected to survive.” Bansal says the heroic actions are something he will never forget. “It was a bad situation and the first time seeing something like that in front of my very
own eyes,” he reflected. “I felt so bad for him. My heart goes down every time I have an image of that accident. I’m just glad to know he is going to be okay.” As for Noguer, she still made her appointment as her hair stylist saw first-hand why her client was late for the appointment. Noguer was just grateful how everyone stepped up and worked together. “I think with everything going on in the world it’s important we recognize heroic behavior and I just happened to be the first one the scene. I didn’t get a chance to say thank you to the people,” she said. “They say it takes a village and that’s what it’s all about. People stepped forward and it was wonderful to see.”

Volunteerism huge part of Hamilton’s life CONTINUED from Page 1
“His time and talents were always a welcome addition to any committee he joined. His financial support of the Rotary International Foundation saw him receive nine individual recognitions, which lead to membership in the Paul Harris Society (named after Rotary’s Founder),” he said. “One of his long-time goals was reached, following a threeyear lead up to his most recent position as Rotary District 5040 Governor. In his capacity of District Governor he provided leadership and inspiration to over 1,500 members of the Rotary family including Rotarians, Rotoractors, and Interactors in more than 50 clubs in the province. While the current COVID-19 pandemic prevented him from physically visiting the District’s clubs at the frequency he aspired to, his face was seen on hundreds of Zoom calls where clubs welcomed his attendance on a weekly basis.” Charbonneau said in his last week, he was honored by Rotary Family from points around the globe who he met during his Governor Training, with a Zoom Tribute called “Dance Like Dave.” He received accolades from classmates,
fellow Rotarians and executives from Rotary International. “He had a positive impact on everyone he met, he will be missed greatly and remembered for his tireless contribution and fun spirit,” added Charbonneau. Rotary has created the Dave Hamilton Service Above Self Bursary in his honour. Garry Shearer, executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce described Hamilton as a “great community builder.” “I met Dave for the first time at a provisional Rotary meeting of the soon to be chartered Rotary Club of Tsawwassen in October 1991 at the Bunkers Restaurant/ Lounge at the old Tsawwassen Golf Club. An immediate friendship was formed, and we shared many adventures together over the past 30 years,” said Shearer. “Dave and I not only shared a passion for Rotary, but also curled on the same team for over 10 years and golfed together at Beach Grove. Some of my best times with Dave was during our fly/golf trips we shared over 10 years. Dave was my co-pilot for seven of those trips where we logged over 60 hours of flying together. Dave would often take the controls and fly the airplane during long legs on our trips. “Dave and I both served on the Rotary District leadership team for many years. We participated in strategic planning sessions for our District 5040 each year. When Dave became president of the Delta Chamber, he asked me to facilitate a strategic planning session at the Chamber in 2016. This was my first encounter with the Delta Chamber before being asked to become the Executive Director in 2019. I recall Dave’s leadership focus at the Chamber was around collaboration. Dave believed that working together, as a community, we could accomplish so much more. He leveraged the relationships, developed over the years with the Optimist, to help start the connections between the Chamber and other business/community associations. “Dave was a great community builder, a teammate and my co-pilot. I will miss him.”

Dave Hamilton, pictured here with his partner Tanya Hall, was very active in leadership roles with the Tsawwassen Rotary Club and beyond. Hamilton was also founding member of the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA). “In my 28 years of being a Tsawwassen business owner and resident I have never met anyone as devoted to this community as Dave Hamilton,” said TBIA president Randy Scott. “What Dave brought will not be matched by anyone. He contributed to countless committees, association boards and sporting groups. Dave brought professionalism, integrity and humour to everything he did. “If you had not met Dave you can see him all around the Tsawwassen community in the trees at the entrance on 56th Street, the Rotary Waterworks Playground at Diefenbaker Park, when you walk down 12th Avenue and at every Tsawwassen Sun Festival Parade. I hope that everyone will be inspired by Dave to give back to their community.” Besides his passion for community, Hamilton had a passion for sports including curling, golf and slo-pitch. He was a member of the Tunnel Town Curling Club for 25 years, served on the board of directors, curled in men’s as well as mixed leagues, often curling three nights per week. “Aside from Dave’s contribution to every team he played on in competitive curling he was a huge presence in the social aspect of our curling club,” said club member Ron Phillip. “Anyone who knows curling, knows that the game is more than just a competitive game. It is the most social of all sports. Dave was certainly a valued member in that regard. His participation at club parties, dances and celebrations always contributed to making the Tunnel Town Curling Club a fun club to belong to. In fact, Tunnel Town Curling is the best curling club I have been involved with in my 55 years of curling in no small part due to a member like Dave. Dave is going to be missed very much by our club and espe-
cially by me as my “front end” partner on many teams.” Chris Hugill, general manager of the Beach Grove Golf Club said Hamilton will be greatly missed. “I first met Dave when I interviewed for Beach Grove Golf Club. He was, in fact, the first person I met at the club,” recalled Hugill. “Despite his smaller stature, he somehow appeared to be 10 feet tall to me. The first thing that I noticed was his Rotary shirt, his bright yellow socks and that great flow of hair. “Dave was a dedicated president for Beach Grove and made a meaningful impact on the lives of so many of our members. Dave taught me to be a more positive person, to remain calm in any crisis and most of all, to make time for the people you care about most. It was an honour to know him and I imagine that there will be many days ahead when I reach for the phone to seek his advice and feel his absence. He will be missed by his Beach Grove Golf family and he will be deeply missed by me.” Monica Lawless said she has fond memories of Hamilton in the Ladner mixed slo-pitch league. “Dave was a big part in our Ladner mixed slo-pitch league. As coach of the Sox for approximately 20 years, he took so much pride in our team,” said Lawless. “To everyone he was “coach” and he loved being on the ball field and when he couldn’t, he was on the sidelines cheering us on. Gone but never forgotten! Rest well coach.” Hamilton’s Memorial will be held on April 24 at 10 a.m. A live link will be set up in the coming days for those who wish to attend. For more details please email: davehamiltonmemorial@gmail.com where a link to the memorial will be provided. COVID-19 vaccine bookings are now available online to all British Columbians, as the province has moved into the third phase of its immunization plan ahead of schedule. “British Columbians faced the countless challenges of this past year with incredible courage,” said Premier John Horgan in a press release Monday. “Today marks a major milestone in our fight against COVID-19, and we ask everyone to wait their turn and follow three steps to help put this pandemic behind us.” The three steps are: register, book when you get your alert, then get the vaccine.
“We encourage everyone in B.C. to get their vaccine at their first opportunity, when it is their turn,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. B.C. residents are encouraged to check the website (https://www2. gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated. html) regularly to know when it is their turn to register, and are asked to please wait until their age cohort is called to register so as not to overload the system. To register online, residents must provide: First and last name Date of birth Postal code Personal Health Number (on the back of your B.C. driver’s licence, B.C. Services Card or Care Card) An email address that
gets checked regularly or a phone number that can receive texts Registration by phone at 1-833-838-2323 will also be available seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in 140 different languages, or in person at Service BC offices during regular hours of operation, both starting April 6 as well. As of Monday nearly 770,000 eligible British Columbians have received their first dose of vaccine, and more than 87,000 have received their second dose. Assuming the province’s vaccine supply is delivered as scheduled, everyone in B.C. who is eligible for the vaccine will receive their first dose by the end of June.

A joint operation involving RCMP and CBSA officers has resulted in a ton of illegally imported opium being seized at Delta Port in Tsawwassen. In early February, after several months of investigation, officers from the RCMP Federal Serious & Organized Crime (FSOC) and the CBSA executed a search warrant on two freight containers to locate a shipment of drugs from overseas. Officers discovered 2,500 individual packages
of suspected opium, each weighing 400 grams, for a total of 1,000 kilos. The packages were then replaced with a placebo in order to allow the investigation to continue without further risk to Canadians and for the operation to track the packages’ On Feb. 11, the containers were picked up and transported to a warehouse in Surrey, where officers arrested five men: a 34-year-old Vancouver man and four men from Ontario. A sixth male fled the scene and evaded capture by police.

“The RCMP takes very seriously any substance that threatens the safety and security of Canadians,” said Supt. Richard Bergevin, Officer in Charge of Federal Serious & Organized crime Major Projects in BC. “This operation is just one example of many successful collaborations between the RCMP and the CBSA combatting the importation of illicit drugs by organized crime groups that care nothing about the harm they cause.” The investigation is ongoing and charges have yet to be laid.
Delta Hospice asset must be saved, group urges SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The community must ensure its asset isn’t lost. That’s what the advocacy group Take Back Delta Hospice is saying about Fraser Health last week taking control of the Irene Thomas Hospice site, including the Harold and Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care and surrounding lands. Having given oneyear’s notice in February 2020 funding would cease, the health region in March gave the Delta Hospice Society (DHS) one-month notice to vacate as operational control would be transferred to the health authority, which occurred last week. In a statement provided to the Optimist, Take Back Delta Hospice says it is pleased the Irene Thomas Hospice will reopen, making vital end-of-life care services available again locally and without restriction of personal choice. However, the advocacy group says as that part of the saga draws to a close, it’s critical that the community continue in its pursuit of rightful control over the assets still held by the DHS. “The Charity Shoppe on 56th Street in Tsawwassen is the fundraising engine that has enabled the ecosystem of care complementary to the services provided at the Irene Thomas Hospice. Paid for by the generosity of our community, this asset is a fundamental part of the broader end-of-life equation here in Delta and must remain in the service of this entire community without constraint or interference by the ideological agenda that ignited this whole situation,” the group states. “A new Delta Hospice Society Board, who represents the entire community’s interests
on end-of-life care, can make this situation wholly right and close the final chapter on this story.” Take Back Delta Hospice and the current leadership of DHS have been embroiled in a battle for control of the society ever since a heated annual general meeting in late 2019. Opposed to providing the legal procedure Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to those who request it, reversing a previous board decision to allow it, the current board had been on a collision course with Fraser Health and the province which mandated nonreligiously affiliated hospices that receive public funding provide MAiD. The current board, forming its own advocacy group called Save Delta Hospice, also refused to accept membership applications from hundreds of Delta residents opposed to the board’s actions, while signing up many from out of the community and province who share the board’s viewpoint on MAiD. Accusing the board of stacking the society’s membership, several members of Take Back Delta Hospice went to court last year and successfully blocked a plan by the board to hold a special meeting to change the society’s constitution to become Christian-based. Fraser Health says work is underway to reopen the facility including making needed upgrades or repairs to the building, ensuring appropriate staffing is in place prior to admitting patients and ensuring the building is licensed to provide hospice care. The health region says it expects to reopen hospice beds at the Irene Thomas Hospice by April 15. The City of Delta has approached the health region about the municipality assuming control of the lease.
Saying he’s pleased to see the society is out, Mayor George Harvie told the Optimist he planned to arrange a meeting with the FHA to discuss next steps. City council last year pulled the society’s municipal permissive tax exemption for the thrift store in Tsawwassen. The Optimist has reached out for comment from the DHS board on its next steps. In an interview last year, board president Angelina Ireland said those in favour of MAiD should form their own society and space for the procedure, adding the provincial government has been trying to steal the private Delta Hospice.

O
ur hearts remain heavy this week here at the Delta Optimist. Our beloved colleague and friend Dave Hamilton lost his courageous battle with cancer last week at the all too young age of 64. Dave was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer in February 2016. He soldiered on undaunted, going through treatments always with a smile on his face, while continuing his role as Optimist General Manager and his many volunteer and charitable efforts in our community. To say Dave had a zest for life would be an understatement. He gave everything to his family, friends, this newspaper and especially this community. I really started to interact with Dave and get to know him better when I joined the Optimist family in the summer of 2016, when a two-month maternity leave reporter position became a full-time reporter position and ultimately led me to taking over as editor when Ted Murphy left last year. I was immediately welcomed with open arms by Dave. He appreciated my work from the start, my commitment to the craft and my willingness to get involved in this community. We also bonded over our love of sports – especially baseball and our beloved New York Yankees. How I will miss going downstairs to his office and chat about a starting line-up or a recap of the previous day’s Yankees’ victory. When Dave was diagnosed with cancer, we all witnessed his strength, his positive attitude, his laugh and his smile. He never complained. He remained optimistic that he would beat it, but sadly that was not the case. I’m proud to have known you Dave and to have had the chance to get to know you better these past few years. Heaven has just received a beacon of light – a light that will give us strength as we continue on. From our Optimist family and the whole Delta community who knew and loved you Dave, God speed and rest in peace. We will miss you.
Pandemic mental health effects are hidden behind closed doors

y neighbour died. I hadn’t seen him lately and I wondered where he might be. He liked to beachcomb or sit and look at the beautiful views of Boundary Bay with his big dog by his side He was the first to collect cut wood from a fallen tree or pick up free stuff left on the curb. The last time I saw him we discussed his veggie boxes he built out of found metal, they were first class and I told him so. I pass his house on my nightly dog walks and I noticed his dog missing from his outdoor bed. Had he gone away to work, was he staying somewhere else? There didn’t seem to be anyone to ask, because he lived alone. He was what some might call a local, ‘character’, and I liked him. Now I know he died of a drug overdose, lost to a lethal batch of tainted drugs. The fear, sadness and loneliness behind closed doors is palatable, I can feel it all

around me. I just can’t see it, until I saw my neighbours’ house was empty. We are spending an increased amount of time alone, working from home and becoming less and less social. It’s taking a toll. Fifty per cent of Canadians say their mental health is on the decline because of COVID-19. Domestic abuse is on the rise under pandemic restrictions as lockdowns become a recurring event. Women are especially vulnerable as partners live and work in small spaces and spend more time together. Alcohol and marijuana
consumption has increased and depression and anxiety in young people is being driven by isolation and increased time spent on line. Manners in public places have deteriorated as people glare at one another if they don’t social distance, or pack their groceries the right way. Road rage is everywhere. So here’s a little refresh now that we are in our second year of pandemic fatigue. You don’t know what people’s stories are or what kind of burden they carry behind closed doors. Remember to be kind, be patient, check on your neighbour, and ask questions if something doesn’t feel right. Offer to lend a hand or give a wave. I can tell when you are smiling behind your mask. The good news is vaccines are here and summer is on the way, so we can come out from the shadows intact and eager to be seen again. South Delta is not an outlier Editor: I have recently seen a number of posts online from South Delta residents discussing interactions with people experiencing homelessness in our community. I was extremely disheartened to see that many were saying that these people must have come from elsewhere in Metro Vancouver and that we don’t have a homeless population here. Not only that, but a number of people were saying that these people must not be homeless at all, and that they are actually scammers preying on our community. Where is the compassion? Where is the acceptance? South
Deltans love to preach that we are welcoming to all in our community, but I am definitely not seeing it here. This got me thinking about where homeless people in our community could go for help, and after some research, I concluded that there really are not many places people in tough situations can go. There’s only a single shelter, the Ladner United Church, and only one or two crisis centres. Instead of trying to push these people out and send them “back where they came from” (as some people were suggesting online), shouldn’t we as a city
take a proactive approach and increase services for these people? If we don’t want to end up with a South Delta ‘tent city’ (again mentioned by someone online), shouldn’t we put the framework in so people don’t resort to having to live in a tent somewhere? Over and over I’m seeing our city go the wrong direction when it comes to things like this. We can’t just keep turning a blind eye to all of this and say that we don’t have that problem here. Enough is enough. Something has to be done, and people’s perceptions of these marginalized populations must change. Kody Garbutt

Community interests not being met
Editor: Re: Pushing the development envelope (Optimist, letters, March 18) Successive councils have pushed the development envelope in Tsawwassen for years, never heeding the cumulative effects of the developments they approve. That is why noise levels along 56th Street are of the order of 90-100 decibels, loud enough to cause hearing damage. We have not even begun to see the full effects of the Southlands development and council continues to push developments through, regardless of community opposition. An example is the new development on Hunter Road; the local residents do not want it; council approved it anyway. The developer can reckon to pocket something in the order of $5 to 10 mil-
lion. The community gets $60,000 as compensation. Taxes from the development will add a mere 0.03 per cent to City of Delta revenues; council is willing to inflict this development on the community for the sake of little more than a rounding error on its books. The project will destroy a stand of healthy young trees. Local residents will have to put up with noise, dirt, traffic obstruction and pedestrian hazard for the next one to two years. That’s how much council cares about the community. As usual, the developer’s convenience comes first; the community’s best interests come a bad last. The City of Delta motto: “Ours to preserve with hand and heart” is either cynical or merely goofy. Tom Morrison

Never take fresh water for granted
Editor: Re: Clean water and sanitation essential for health, education and economic development Those of us fortunate to be living in this country may take our supply of fresh water for granted, and the sanitation facilities which come with our high standard of living. Children in poor health, because they are deprived of access to clean water and sanitation, miss education, and their families, healthier, more productive lifestyles. Women and girls are often deprived and put at risk because they constantly travel great distances to bring potable water back to their communities. Rotary thinks clean water and sanitation is a human right. That’s why Rotary has provided access to safe water for
23 million people in our world and to sanitation and hygiene for 21 million people. The aim is to extend that right to people worldwide by 2030. Adopt-A-Village is a Rotary Club of Ladner program to do just that for villages in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation of Laos. The program began to increase education of children in remote villages. Because the children often could not attend classes because of illness from unpotable water, the program branched out to deliver water filters to each village household. Part of their education, in this program and others worldwide, is about disease transmission and practice good hygiene -- lessons they take home to their families. Mike Storey

As more British Columbians receive their COVID-19 vaccines, there is optimism for the coming months. I know everyone can’t wait to reunite with loved ones and return to normal activities, but we are still a ways away from a full return to our usual routines. I urge everyone to continue to follow public health orders to stay safe and healthy. That said, we will soon see a bit more normalcy return to B.C.’s farmers markets. I was thrilled by the recent news that B.C.’s crafters, artisans and makers will be able to return to the markets this

season. They had been prohibited from participating due to public health orders, unlike food vendors who were able to continue selling their goods while employing measures like physical distancing, hand-sanitizing and mask-wearing. I joined farmers’ market representatives and other members of the agricultural community to argue that non-food vendors could follow the same rules and sell their goods safely, and our voices were heard. This is good news for these vendors who were struggling to keep their operations afloat, and for the markets who rely on the stall fees they pay to continue to operate. These markets contribute so much to our communities and to B.C.’s economy. Tourism also contributes significant revenues to our economy, and it’s sad to see how badly tourism and hospitality businesses are suffering due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, government has told tourism businesses to look for relief in its Small and
Medium-Sized Business Recovery Program which has struggled to get funds out the door. A year after funds were approved, only a small fraction of the $300 million earmarked has gotten into the hands of business owners. Meanwhile, the NDP has been missing in action as B.C. risks permanently losing its cruise ship industry when the borders reopen in 2022. Legislation is being introduced in the U.S. that will allow cruise ships to bypass Canadian ports on their way to and from Alaska, and there are concerns this change could be made permanent. It seems the Premier and Tourism Minister have taken very little action to defend the industry even though they were warned about the issue back in February. We need a solid plan from this NDP government if our province is to fully recover from this pandemic. The Premier needs to act now to protect these important sectors, restore jobs and move our economy forward.

505-Junk teams up with DSS grads for weekend fundraiser 505-Junk is partnering with the Delta Secondary Dry Grad committee this weekend. Recognizing that Deltans are going to miss the annual spring cleanup event, on Sunday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DSS tennis court parking lot, 505Junk is collecting your small to medium sized junk and donating their time in a fundraising effort to support the Grad Class of 2021. “The DSS Dry Grad 2021 community is thankful for 505-Junk which itself has strong roots in South Delta,” said the Dry Grad committee. “The entrepreneurs of 505-Junk, Scott Foran and Barry Hartman, are SDSS alumni and they just want to give back to the community that helped raise them. Already, they have given Deltans greatly appreciated deals over the past year and bit to make up
for the loss of the city’s annual spring clean-up.” A note to those dropping off, no drywall, chemicals, aggregates (cement and dirt), food waste and mattresses/ box springs will be accepted The DSS Dry Grad committee has been developing plans that will hopefully adhere to COVID provincial health orders by the end of June. With folks already being able to gather in outside spaces with the same 10 people, the Dry Grad committee is hopeful that the health orders will ease just enough to allow their plans to work. Fundraising has been more challenging this year than in any other year, and prior to COVID, Dry Grad has been able to raise enough funds to support a robust scholarship program at DSS. This year, available scholarship funds are looking like they will be
far less than in past years. To help power through to their budgeted goal of reaching $50,000, DSS Dry Grad has run a number of fundraisers already including: Holiday Stock Up with Purdy’s, Neufeld Farms sales, samosa sales and epicure, a shred-a-thon, virtual naked Pallet paint night with Four Winds, picnic catering and custom platters, Easter Purdy’s and Bombs and Bevvies hot chocolate bombs and now family portraits with Kristen Laufer Photography and 505-Junk-A-Thon. For later in May, they are pulling together auction items for the last kick at the can with an online auction. Come out and support all their fundraising events and make a donation that works for you and that supports a good cause for the youth of Ladner. Stay in the loop at dssgrad.com.

DPD use Narcan to save overdose victims Delta police used lifesaving Narcan/Naloxone in two cases Wednesday where people were overdosing, helping to save their lives.
In the first instance, a family member called 9-1-1 when their loved one appeared to be overdosing. Officers administered three doses of Narcan before the individual was revived. In the second instance, a member of the public contacted police about an unconscious man in a vehicle who was in the company of others. Police located the vehicle and in this case four doses of Nalaxone were required, and officers additionally performed chest compressions. Fortunately the man eventually revived and was taken to hospital. “Although an overdose
is considered a medical emergency, our officers may be first on the scene, responding to a call for help,” said Delta police. “This is why they are equipped with Nalaxone, also known as Narcan. “The ongoing opioid crisis continues to be a public health emergency, so we want to remind the public about the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. This Act offers legal protection for those who experience or witness an overdose and call 9-1-1 for help. The Act protects against charges of possession of a controlled substance, or breach of conditions regarding possession.”

Days following, upwards of $4,000 was charged/withdrawn from their bank account.” If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, please contact Delta police at 604-946-4411.
Delta police are warning the public about another scam that has been circulating in Delta. According to DPD, in this particular scam, the victim receives a phone call from a “courier company” stating that they had a package that required a signature. “When the courier driver arrived, the victim was surprised to see a beautiful basket of flowers and a bottle of wine. Intrigued, they inquired who the sender was,” said DPD. “The delivery driver stated that he was just a driver, but that a card would be delivered later. The driver then informed

A significant renovation project is underway at the Holly Park Pump Track in East Ladner. It was last summer when Elliot Graham reached out to the City of Delta with the idea of providing the seven-yearold bike circuit a muchneeded makeover. His two children, ages six and nine, are active in racing out of Action BMX in Surrey. “This facility just hadn’t been maintained,” said Graham. “It was overgrown and needed to be refurbished. My first train of thought was to just give it a refurbish because we travel out to Surrey a lot.” The city embraced the idea and offered materials, ranging from soil to drainage. Graham then brought Action BMX president Jason McCormick onboard who also happens to be a Ladner resident. He suggested the project could be much more, making it “bigger and better.” Through McCormick’s connections, the pair brought in BMX national team coach Adam Muys, who has experience in designing and constructing tracks. Thanks to a consulting fee from the city and a flexible coaching schedule, the Maple Ridge resident is putting his stamp on the new-

There will be four sets: the main one, a pump track, a kids’ track for striders and beginners, and a path that will take you around the entire park.” Thanks to the generosity of Double-R Rentals, the trio have been busy with excavators building jumps and shaping the various circuits. Mother Nature will have a major say on how fast the new park will open, however. “We rely on good weather to get it massaged in the right places.
The soil was really wet so we need it to dry out and cure,” said Muys. “It’s great to see the City of Delta is really onboard with this. It’s a major re-fresh here and it will hopefully spark more interest. I’m hoping it will good enough that I will want to come out here and ride.” Graham added drainage is a big thing in how long the track will be ridable into the fall and winter, especially with Ladner at sea level. The new set-up is being built on top of the old circuit which is at least raising the elevation. Ideally, asphalt would be installed in many areas. That has resulted in

I’m a hockey chaplain as well as a pastor and so April 6 is a day that is particularly meaningful. On this day, three years ago, a tragedy hit the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team, hit the hockey world, hit Canada and in all likelihood, it hit you. When horrible things like this happen, a part of us wants to move on quickly and try and get back to normal, but somehow, we know that we can’t forget. In fact, we build monuments so that we don’t forget. For now, at the site of the Humboldt crash there is only a makeshift memorial of hockey sticks and crosses, but until a more enduring memorial is built, it serves a vital purpose. So why do we remember? Why do we take a moment of silence at games and events? We discipline ourselves to remember because it

honours those who died. God formed us and knit us together and then breathed his life into us. We are much more than the sum of our physical parts - we are wonderfully and fearfully made and we are precious - every one of us. We remember because it helps those families who are hurting the most, so many friends and families are now living without their son or brother or husband or
friend, and we push ourselves to pause a few minutes because as much as we want to think we are invulnerable, this tragedy reminds us we are not. It calls us to be vigilant, to keep what’s important on the top instead of just what’s urgent and to value relationships more deeply. My relationship with God helps to create a North Star in my life, a point of focus so that tragedy and death can be remembered without me getting lost. Faith in God may be seen as a crutch to some people, but when you feel very crippled and overwhelmed it’s appreciated. So take time to remember. Not just the Humboldt experience, but perhaps other losses you have experienced. Honour that which is gone. Encourage those who share the grief with you. May God help you as you do.

Ladner Rotary shred-a-thon fundraiser set for Saturday
An outdoor storybook reading trail in Ladner for children and a program to provide food for Delta Secondary School students and their families who need it will benefit through proceeds from a secure Shred-A-Thon planned by the Rotary Club of Ladner for April 10.
ShredWise will provide secure shredding services of old tax returns, credit card bills, business records, bank statements, and personal information documents, at $10 per banker box equivalent and by additional donation, if desired. The Shred-A-Thon, sponsored by Ideal Door and Envision Financial Ladner Branch, is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a lot behind Eastlink at 5381 Ladner Trunk Road. “Thanks to Ideal Door and Envision Financial in Ladner we have two shredding trucks booked so we can handle a lot of shredding,” said Rotary Club of Ladner president Peter Roaf. “Last Fall we had to stop early because we filled up one shredding truck earlier than expected, but we are ready to open much longer this year to support two important causes for children and youth in our community.”

Sport BC has recognized Debbie Cheong for making a difference in seniors’ lives across the province. The Ladner resident was presented the ‘In Her Footsteps Award’ at the provincial organization’s annual gala which was held virtually last month. In Her Footsteps is a yearly recognition program that honours female athletes, coaches, officials, judges, pioneers or advocates in B.C. These women have made significant contributions to sport and fitness through their own performance, or by enabling others to excel by encouraging participation and fostering developmental growth in sport. Under Cheong’s stewardship, B.C. has become an international leader in seniors’ fitness. She is a sought after workshop presenter and facilitator throughout the province and beyond. Cheong is the provincial coordinator of BC Women’s Hospital’s Osteofit, an education program that incorporates fall prevention exercise for people with low bone mass and those at risk of falling. She also oversees Get Up and Go and Carefit, two more vitally important programs for seniors. Little did she know the impact she would ultimately make when she decided to enroll in a fitness
training course decades earlier. “I thought it would be cool to take a fitness course and it was a way to develop some self-confidence as well,” Cheong recalled. When I finished the course I got offered a job and I turned it down as I just didn’t see myself doing that.” What did intrigue her was helping improve the lifestyles of seniors by overseeing programs that would create curriculums through scientific research to provide proper and safe fitness instruction. “Osteoporosis is a devastating disease with a high risk for fractures. (Osteofit) was developed out of the hospital for that training structure so instructors will know what to do. It started off with a few classes in Vancouver and now the program is available province wide and in the Yukon as well,” she said. Get Up and Go is designed to improve strength, balance and coordination as well as functional ability independence and quality of life to enhance seniors living in their own homes longer. Carefit was launched to give assisted living facilities an exercise program that is suited for their residents. “We found out the staff at these residences really had no training in fitness activities. gestion of why don’t we train the staff. It was initially a BandAid approach of going into care homes to make the fitness programs more appropriate and safe. Now we’re training the (fitness) students so when they graduate
they already have the knowledge. “My passion is working with seniors and seeing them improve. That social connection. Encouraging them and motivating them. I enjoy it and there is so much that can be done.”
Tsawwassen senior will be walking for Kenya students Retired teacher Clara Penner knows how important gaining an education is in providing a hand up to people living in poverty. That’s why she is hitting the streets later this month for the Kenya Education Endowment Fund (KEEF). “KEEF scholarships open doors to bright, poor youth in western Kenya – where high school is not free!” explained the Tsawwassen senior. “Families living on tiny farms in rural areas often have cash incomes of only $2 to $3 a day. This does not allow them to pay the tuition, uniform, shoes and books required to attend secondary school in Kenya.” As well as offering secondary
Clara Penner and post-secondary scholarships in Kenya, KEEF provides an annual Life Skills Workshop for 130 students assisted by the allvolunteer Canadian charity, their sister organization in Kenya, and
the KEEF Alumni Association. To help fund the workshop, Penner is doing the 10km Vancouver Sun Run. This year’s event is being done virtually and Clara plans her walk in the Tsawwassen Beach area in midApril. The multi-day workshops offer topics such as first aid, assertiveness, entrepreneurial skills, teamwork, and more. The sessions are planned and delivered by volunteers from Canada and Kenya. As well, some students who have developed an appropriate business plan at the workshop are given micro-loans to begin a small business during the school vacation.
Many of these are businesses that a family member can take over when the student returns to school, benefitting the parents and siblings longer term. Please consider supporting Penner’s efforts with a donation to KEEF. “No amount is too small to be of help. Tax-deductible donations are available for all gifts,” she says. Cheques, payable to KEEF, can be mailed to KEEF c/o #904 -2135 Argyle Ave. West Vancouver V7V 1A5; e-transfers may be sent to keefcan2010@ gmail.com or visit www.kenyaeducation.org for other options. Please note on your gift that it is for Penner’s Sun Run.

Delta’s Virtual
Triathlon
May 1-16
The Delta Triathlon returns May 1-16, 2021, virtually! In an effort to encourage residents to remain active during the COVID-19 pandemic, while also maintaining health and safety guidelines, the City of Delta is excited to announce the Delta Virtual Triathlon. Due to restrictions on gathering sizes, the Delta Virtual Triathlon will look a little different than previous triathlons. Consisting of three components; swimming, biking, and running, the “virtual” edition of the Delta Triathlon will be completed at your own pace between May 1 and May 16, 2021.
Participants are encouraged to partake in the run and bike components away from the pool portion of the triathlon, to alleviate any potential large gatherings. Please use your own timing devices, as professional timing is not provided. This virtual event has been sanctioned by Triathlon BC.
The swim component is pre–registered and is happening at the Ladner Outdoor Pool. Participants will be allotted a 30 minute time slot in the pool to complete their swim. The bike and run components are to be completed on your own time, either on the same day or another day within the two week time frame. Suggested bike and run routes will be available.

A full sun location is ideal to create a new backyard vegetable garden.
Planning your vegetable garden KRISTIN CROUCH
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i te r
Now that spring has arrived it’s time to plan the vegetable garden. If you are new to gardening choose a site in full sun as it will guarantee a successful harvest. Avoid starting a new vegetable garden near trees or shaded areas. Be sure to select a site in close proximity to a water source. Decide how you will garden. Will you grow in containers, raised beds or in the ground? Containers are great for small spaces and can be moved around to maximize sunlight. Use a soil mix suited for containers, not garden soil as it’s too heavy. Look for plants or seeds that have been adapted to growing in containers. Choose the right size container for the plant. Shallow rooted plants like salad greens do well in small containers, but large plants like squash should be grown in oak barrels. Raised beds are popular and are elevated making it easy to amend and weed the soil. They also warm up quickly in the spring. Build a raised bed just wide enough that you can reach from one side to the other without having to step on the soil. Fill your raised bed with the best soil that you can as it will be the foundation for healthy plant growth for many years. The most economical way to garden is to plant right in the ground. Select an
area that has good drainage. Weed and remove any debris in the spring to prepare your garden for planting. If you have clay soil amend it with compost or aged manure to improve soil structure and tilth. Grow what your family likes to eat. It’s no sense growing kale if the children don’t like it. When selecting vegetable seedlings look for compact, healthy plants that haven’t ?owered or fruited. They are easier to transplant into the garden.
For easy plants to start this month look for potatoes, salad greens and peas to get you started. When planting, moisten the soil and add some organic fertilizer to the planting hole and mix it in. Place your plant in the soil at the same level as it was in the original pot. Be sure to water during the first week after transplanting to ensure your plants settle into their new home. In a few months you will be able to harvest vegetables for family dinners.
The Port of Vancouver’s harmful Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion project must be stopped. This multi-billion-dollar, taxpayer-funded project to build a massive, artificial island will create unneeded capacity, uncompetitive port rates and will cause damage that, according to Environment Canada, is “permanent, irreversible, and continuous.” Fortunately, there is a way to #BuildBackBetter. It should have been a season full of games and tournaments for South Delta Minor Hockey Association’s rep teams, including the U18 A2 Storm, but the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent health restrictions meant nothing but training sessions from early November onwards.
A minor hockey season like no other
South Delta volunteers answered the challenges as pandemic wiped out game action MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The party never did get started for the South Delta Minor Hockey Association. The COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc with the 2020/21 campaign, especially in early November and beyond when rising case numbers resulted in further restrictions and brought an end to cohort games after just two weeks. It remained that way for the next four months, wiping out plenty of highlighted events including the always popular Party In Da House Tournament that is typically held during the holiday break. “It was like a two-week survival rate. We were still planning to do our party tournament which is always a big event for us,” said SDMHA president Todd Allan. “We just didn’t want to cancel it in case we could do it (later in
the season). We kept hitting the two-week break re-set button but there was nothing. By February, I think parents and kids all ages, especially teenage ones, realized we were not playing games.” As a teacher at Delta Secondary and a father, Allan doesn’t need to be reminded of the impact the pandemic has had on teenagers, especially those that were looking forward to their final couple of years in high school and winding down their minor hockey careers. “Really if I had to give up a year it would be in my 30s or 40s not when I am 16 or 17. Those in Grades 11 and 12, I feel really bad for them,” he said. “For the most part (U18) rep kids are going to stay engaged regardless as they still have the ambition of wanting to play somewhere. For the (U18) and (U16) house kids it can be really difficult (not playing games)

SDMHA still made it a memorable season for its grassroots groups, including U9. and as coaches you have to really try and be creative. That was a big hurdle with parent coaches (at those levels) but they were outstanding for us.” It was last summer when the association worked with for-
mer SDMHA executive Wayne Carleton to come up with a safe “Return to Play” plan that was approved by ViaSport and the City of Delta. Social distancing had to be factored into everything from arrival to the arena without parents to how many players that were allowed on the ice. “We had to redo our ice grid a few times to manage the numbers,” explained SDMHA administrator Tracey LippDerrheim. “We would sometimes have 30 to 40 kids on the ice with those age groups and now we could have only 20.” Perhaps the greatest challenge was parents not being allowed in the arena, from separation anxiety for the younger players to not being able to see their child’s progress on a weekly basis. “That that was the hardest thing. Some parents were in the arena as we needed safety persons,” added Lipp-Derrheim.

“City protocols allowed us to one videographer and each team had to coordinate that, whether it was putting it on Instagram live or private Facebook. The restaurant at Tilbury definitely became a hotspot for parents. “At the end of the day the kids still had fun. I thing if you asked people last August they would say my child doesn’t want to come to hockey unless there are games, but I think people realized that it was just nice for their kids to go to the rink and have something to do.” The association is planning for a “normal” 2021/22 season come September, but it will be a cautious approach. “I’ve stopped trying to be optimistic and be more realistic instead,” added Allan. “If we can get on the ice to do our (rep team) evaluations and prep camps that is a good start, but we also know we have to be ready to change on the fly.”

It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Vera. Born in Colchester, UK, she came to Canada in 2000 to be near to her only son Paul, daughter in law Suzanne, and her beloved Granddaughter Zoe, whom she loved most of all. Made of tough British stock, she was strong willed and fiercely independent right to the end. Vera never wanted to be a burden to the family and tried to manage the best she knew how by herself. Vera enjoyed playing Bingo and her time visiting McKee Seniors Centre as often as possible, until COVID unexpectedly put a stop to all that.

My dearest Joanne, I can’t believe it has been 10 years since you were taken from us. I mourn you each day and think of what could have been. Missed family get-togethers, holiday celebrations, birthdays, milestones and watching our children grown up. Happy times! You were a very special person and my only sibling. You had a great sense of humour, worked tirelessly for your family and didn’t ask for much in return. You were very loyal, especially to your two girls. I just want to honour you and know you have not been forgotten. We miss you! Love Kim, O.B., Fred, Nicholas and Natasha x0x0x0x0x0

MAIR, Renata October 23, 1963 − March 18, 2021 Renata left us much too soon, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Renata was born in Austria where she grew up on the family farm, the middle child of a family of three girls. After high school, she moved to Vienna where she studied tourism and hospitality. Upon graduation, she moved to France for two years, lived in Paris as an au pair, then to Montreal for a year before settling in Tsawwassen in March 1988. Renata was a flight attendant for several years, a dream come true, and she loved travelling all over the world. She had a keen eye for fashion and an amazing style for home decorating, sourcing many treasures from thrift stores. Gardening was another one of her passions, and many people admired the tall planters she maintained year−round at the entrance of her building. She enjoyed meeting new people and would often engage in conversations with strangers as if they were long−time friends. She always felt the need to help others less fortunate or starting out in life, providing them with household items, furniture, or clothing. Many people in our community will remember her as she helped raise their children, helped maintain and decorate their house, teamed up with chefs to serve special dinners. But most of us will remember her as a loyal friend we could always count on, a wonderful guest at dinner parties who could carry conversations on all kinds of subjects, and who loved to share entertaining stories. We would like to thank her sisters, Heidi and Ernestine, who called her every day from Austria and gave her so much emotional support, the nurses at Fraser Health, all her friends who stood by her through her sickness, and mostly Vickie who cared for her on her last few days, making it possible for her to return home. Rest in peace Renata. Whenever we see a hummingbird we will think of you.
