10 Years of Helping People Recycle Junk in South Delta T
en years ago, 505-Junk was launched by business partners Barry Hartman and Scott Foran in the basement of Hartman’s parent’s home in South Delta. 505-Junk is on a mission to change the way junk removal is done by recycling and donating unwanted materials, ensuring items do not end up in the Ladner landfill. To celebrate 10 years, we will continue to waive our $79 pickup fee for pickups located outside in South Delta. This way, you can easily clear out your garage, get rid of the old couch, or clean up that pile of wood that you have been putting off. Our goal is to make junk removal affordable for everyone.
Many of you continue to frequently use our service, and we appreciate you keeping your business local. To the rest of South Delta, we would like to help you as well.
From now until October 31st, we are waiving our $79 pick-up fee and simply charging 29¢ per pound with no minimum charge for Ladner and Tsawwassen pickups. Simply leave your items outside, and our team will take care of the rest.*
*This includes all labour, transportation, and disposal fees. Regular surcharge rates apply for mattresses, box springs, tires, full paint cans, and other select items.

Delta family doctors are urging residents to get their influenza shots and not let their guard down from a deluge of COVID19 information. For the second straight year, the Delta Division of Family Practice will be hosting a mass community flu shot clinic at the Harris Barn in Ladner, starting on Oct. 19. Last year’s event, run by volunteer doctors, nurses and pharmacists, went exceptionally well with bookings solid on each of the days and more than 3,000 residents vaccinated. Throw in the COVID-19 safety practices of mask wearing, hand-washing and social distancing, and it was one of the tamest flu seasons on record, with just 18 cases recorded provincewide. However, doctors warn this year could be vastly different as the pandemic restrictions ease. “Last year was an unusually low year for influenza in the community. The big part of that was everybody was at home, wearing masks, PPE and there was less of an opportunity for transmissions,” explained Dr. Adriana Wong. “This year, people are starting to travel and getting a little

Delta Division of Family Practice will once again by holding a flu vaccine clinic this month at Harris Barn in Ladner. more complacent where they think they don’t have to worry about the flu. “Every year there are a number of cases of influenza and it can be a very serious disease. When you don’t see it for a whole year you kind of forget that. Everybody’s mind is on COVID-19.” Doctors are also having to dispel the myth that being double-vaccinated for COVID-19 can also provide protection from other diseases. “Especially with people (already getting) poked and prodded. Now there is talk about a booster or a third dose (of a COVID-
19 vaccine). People are getting a little bit fatigued hearing about immunization, so I do find I have to educate individuals and let them know that COVID is different from influenza. It is two different illnesses that they can potentially contact,” said Dr. Olga Makarenko. “It’s important to stress we get there is fatigue around here. All this information about vaccinations. We sympathize with people. We know it’s a lot of information that gets thrown their way. We do want to encourage that we are family physicians and we do want what is

best for our community. Getting the flu vaccine is one of the things they can do to protect themselves, protect their loved ones and protect the vulnerable population, the elderly and pregnant women. It’s something that has been studied for many years and something that is considered safe.” Both physicians agreed hospitals and emergency rooms are already being pushed to near capacity thanks to the fourth wave of COVID. Getting a flu shot is supporting the healthcare system while providing a peace of mind.
“The other thing to remember is some of the symptoms can look pretty similar between COVID and influenza,” Wong added. “At least you know if you had your COVID vaccines you can get similar symptoms where if you have also had your influenza vaccine it will hopefully eliminate chances to get either disease.” Additional dates for the Harris Barn flu clinics are Oct. 21, Oct. 28 and Oct. 30. Each one will run from noon to 6 p.m. To register visit www. southdeltafluclinics.ca or call 604-943-5591.

Jansson has served as Delta’s Deputy City Clerk since 2016 and will assume her new role on Nov. 19. A Delta resident, Jansson has strong ties to the community as well as five years of experience in a deputy role in the Clerk’s Office where she has performed all duties of the City Clerk during regular acting assignments, overseen council meetings, public hearings, and committee meetings, and served as Deputy Chief Election Officer in 2018. “While we are sad to be losing the wealth of experience and positive character of Robyn Anderson, we are fortunate that Michelle Jansson was ready and willing to step into this crucial staff position

More than 50 weapons were seized, and 148 roadside arrests or detentions were made during the first three months of Delta Police’s new Violence Suppression Team. The team was created after a spike in gang-related violence in early 2021, and the May 1 homicide of Bikramdeep Randhawa in a North Delta shopping mall parking lot. The team was conceived as a three-month project, and reviewed at the end of August. “The team was created to be highly visible, and to deter individuals associated with violent crime from Delta,” says Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu, who heads up Operations for Delta Police. “The team gave a boost to the existing Inadmissible Patron Program, recruiting new establishments to it, and
its officers also tested the DPD’s new body-worn cameras. Backing up the visible efforts, the team publicized its efforts on social media platforms, to ensure the public, and those associated with the gang lifestyle, were well aware of activities.” In addition to the weapons seized and arrests, by the three-month mark the team: * generated 138 proactive investigations * forwarded 24 charge submission documents to Crown Counsel * gathered valuable intelligence related to the gang activity * generated zero public complaints. “Another important aspect of this project is that we had hoped by using body-worn cameras, our officers would face a reduced risk of violence,” adds Sidhu. “I’m pleased
that since we began the deployment of the cameras with this team there have been no violent incidents that resulted in officer injuries.” He notes that DPD continues to work with regional partners to keep up the pressure on gangs in the Metro Vancouver area, and that the coordinated approach of frontline interdiction is making a difference. Based on the initial success of the Violence Suppression Team, it has been extended until the end of 2021. “In combination with our Patrol Support Team, our intention is to keep the foot on the gas, with continued checks of licensed premises for those associated to the gang conflict, as well as other activities to deter violence in Delta,” said Sidhu.

Delta wants to look more closely at protecting ‘significant trees’ DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta staff have some homework on more clearly defining and identifying ‘significant trees’ when it comes to tree protection and amending its related bylaws. During the Oct. 4 council meeting, questions were posed about timelines and definitions during a discussion about protecting trees within Delta. The report from corporate services recommended staff have a more detailed discussion about significant trees, and how to define and identify them, then report back to council. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos asked staff what the timeline for addressing significant trees would be, and it was answered that it would likely take a few months. “Part of the work that we plan to do before
coming back to council is start a list of some of the trees that would fall into this category, including likely some municipal trees ... [we want] to just take some time to get it right and make sure that we’re covering everything we need to,” said planning director Marcy Sangret. The latest staff report follows a May 2020 council meeting, where council adopted an Urban Forest Strategy recommending staff report back on options to protect significant trees in the city, as well as to ensure that the city is being appropriately compensated when tree removal is needed. Nearly a year and a half later, council has now approved adjusting the definition of a “large diameter tree” to one with a trunk diameter of 60 cm or greater, which, if removed, will require increased tree replacement.
“I think one of the really important changes here is that we are recognizing, as a city, that not all trees are equal in terms of value for the community. And that an alder or a cottonwood or a dying, decaying tree should not be treated with the same weight as a large diameter tree,” said Coun. Dylan Kruger. Council also approved creating new $5,000 penalties for the unauthorized removing of large diameter trees and $10,000 penalties for significant trees. Another recommendation from the latest report was carrying out a tree education campaign, which Kanakos said she was looking forward to seeing how that rolls out. It would work to raise awareness about the benefits of trees, how to maintain them, the Trees for Tomorrow program and current tree protection options for residents.
Delta council, school board team up to promote COVID vaccines Delta school board and Delta council are joining forces to encourage everyone eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine to get vaccinated. “As most COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths are now among unvaccinated adults, it is extremely important that everyone who is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine gets vaccinated,” said school board chair Val Windsor. “As long as COVID-19 is present in our communities, we will continue to see COVID-19 exposures in our schools.”
Earlier this year, mayors across the Fraser Health region challenged each other to increase vaccination rates in their communities. “Here in Delta, we continue to have the highest COVID-19 vaccination rate in the Fraser Health region, with 93 per cent of people aged 12 and over having received one dose and 88 per cent being fully vaccinated,” said Mayor George Harvie. “This is remarkable and I’d like to express my thanks to the community for embracing the oppor-

t’s Small Business Week in Canada – a time to recognize and acknowledge the importance of small business to all of our communities. According to the Business Development Bank of Canada (BCDC), small and medium-sized businesses contribute 54 per cent of Canada’s gross domestic product and there are more than 1.2 million small and medium-sized businesses in Canada that help fuel our economy. Delta plays a strong role in these numbers and the community is built upon small business. Local shops and businesses are the fabric of our community. They are among the first organizations to support our schools, sports teams and local charities. The dollars that are spent locally get invested back into our community through the hiring of local services, eating in local cafes/restaurants and coming together to support local events and initiatives. Local businesses are the employers for our friends, our neighbours and many in our community. Did you know that approximately 98 per cent of businesses in B.C. are small businesses? When we choose to shop local, we are often choosing to support that 98 per cent of our province and our economy. Local businesses are invested in our community more than just financially. Local business owners are volunteers, philanthropists and support systems for many in the community. We here at the Optimist rely on the support of small business, which allows us to publish a newspaper in print every week and online every day. Now more than ever it is vital that we all support the small businesses in our community as we all continue to deal with the challenges of the pandemic. We may recognize these businesses this week as part of Small Business Week, but it is imperative that we offer them support every day of every week. Without small businesses, especially the ones here in Delta, our community would not be the great one that it is.
Getting back to normal by opening the U.S. land border
I
had the strangest experience over the long weekend. I went to a hockey tournament in Richmond to watch a couple of the goalies I coach. Weird. Not only was there a tournament being played, but there were parents in the arena watching! Can you believe that? Parents watching their kids play hockey? In Canada? Wow. Not long ago, that would seem like an odd statement, but for the past 18 months, parents have rarely been allowed to watch their kids play. I’ve seen them on the ice when parents weren’t allowed into the rink, but for Thanksgiving, that changed. There’s something to be thankful for. As more of us are vaccinated, the world around us opens up a little more every day. COVID is still a big problem, especially for those not vaccinated, but we can’t be locked up any longer, it’s not a sustainable situation. The next big thing is the land crossings with the U.S. Looks like that’s happening soon. Then we’ll know the world is right again.
Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN
I can only imagine the lineup at the Point Roberts border crossing. I don’t even think my Nexus card will help, but I don’t care. While I’m happy those folks can cross the border north, it will make a world of difference for us to be able to cross south. It seems that there are few breakthrough cases, and those that appear are mild, as long as you don’t pass it to someone not protected. COVID will be with us for a long time, but if you’ve done what’s been asked and received your shots, it’s time to let us have our lives back. I’ll wear my mask. I’ll produce my vaccination record. I’ve done my part, like so many others have. Some will
say it creates a two-tiered society, where some have freedoms and others don’t. I find that an odd argument, because we already have a two-tiered society. You need a passport to travel. You need vaccinations to be allowed into some countries already. You have choices, and if you choose not to meet the requirements, you choose to stay home. Freedom is about having a choice, not about doing anything you want. It’s not governments who are restricting you, it a virus that’s trying to kill you that is. And now the land border will open in November! It’s about time, but I guess we should just be thankful. Stadiums are full, concerts are being held - the crowds are huge. It’s not like a bunch of vaccinated Canadians are going to cause any trouble. Unless the Canadian dollar weakens. That’ll keep us home. Letters
Thanks to our Delta farmers Editor: Delta’s farming and fishing communities have played a key role in the city’s development and character. Through urbanization, most Delta residents today have little connection with farmers and fishers and may not fully appreciate their important role of providing food security and sustainability. This past summer, Delta farmers took on a
task for which they didn’t seek recognition because they felt it was the right thing to do. The extraordinary heatwave impacted farmers throughout southern B.C. Not only did the heat, drought and forest fires threaten the production of crops, thousands of heads of cattle had to be moved out of the fire zones. While livestock was saved, the farmers faced an acute shortage
of cattle feed. When Delta farmers heard about the existential threats faced by farmers of the Interior, they pulled resources together. Truck load after truck load of donated hay was transported. This extraordinary grassroots support deserves recognition beyond the farming community. I’m hugely proud of our farmers and all Deltans should be! P. van Westendorp
Delta needs more separated bike lanes Editor: My family and I moved to Delta in 2019 and we have been living here over the last two years. We love the community and the ‘small-town’ feel. In particular, we love that we feel confident biking to school daily with our daughter, who is five-years-old and rides on a trail-a-bike for the eight km roundtrip between school and home. Riding a bicycle is a great way for kids to develop their spatial awareness, create a mental map of where they live, and learn to live an active lifestyle. Skills that will serve them well later in life. (It’s pretty great for adults too!). Our daughter loves her bike rides. Unfortunately, our commute home on a recent Thursday ended in tears when a car pulled out of a parking lot and
hit my daughter. The driver didn’t notice us, as she was simply watching cars coming from the opposite direction. She simply pulled out of the parking lot and hit my daughter. As a parent who could see the accident happening, but had no room to maneuver my daughter out of the way, it was the worst feeling in the world. It is still the worst feeling in the world. We were lucky. My daughter has a scrape on her knee and her bike is a bit banged up. Most importantly, she didn’t die. I’ll repeat that, so that it truly sinks in. I’m grateful that my daughter didn’t die when she was hit by a car. There are larger personal vehicles (e.g., SUVs and pickup trucks) on the road now than at any other point in the past.
Most of those vehicles cannot see a child on a bike in front of them; some of them cannot even see me and I am not small. These vehicles require more distance to stop safely than smaller vehicles, and drivers are more distracted now then ever before. We need separated bike lanes throughout the City of Delta that will protect our most vulnerable road users, like my five-year-old daughter. These separated bike lanes must connect to existing bike lanes (that need upgrading to be separated bike lanes) and be in areas that are useful for connecting homes, schools, and stores. There simply isn’t a good reason for inaction (or slow action) and the cost of not having this infrastructure in place is simply too high. Tara Imlay
Getting vaccinated is our way out of the pandemic Editor: I am writing in response to a recent letter entitled suggesting a more measured approach (Optimist, Sept. 30). I agree that we need to try to treat each other with love and concern during these difficult times, but also feel that I must address some factual errors within this letter, especially since the writer also identifies as a former health care professional, which may provide her opinion with more weight. Since January 2020, much more is under-
stood regarding the COVID-19 virus and it is now well known and scientifically proven that the dominant Delta variant is highly transmissible especially indoors when we speak, laugh, sneeze and talk loudly. Infected people are infectious up to three days prior to developing symptoms as well as when they are starting to feel symptoms. The Delta variant causes more severe infections and the vast majority of hospitalized patients, those in ICU and those who are dying, are
not vaccinated or only partially vaccinated. She writes about ways to stay safe and healthy, but the one most important way, being vaccinated, which will stop this virus and protect our own health and safety and those of our families, friends and communities, has been relegated to the end. This is not “fear mongering” it is speaking the truth and our way to ending this pandemic in our own communities and in the world eventually. Wanda Brown
ASK A SENIOR LIVING EXPERT How do I know I can trust senior living communities if they’re not government regulated? This is a question that is on many people’s minds these days. Covid-19 has shone a spotlight on the senior living industry, and we all want assurance that our senior loved ones are safe at home. Most independent living seniors’ communities like ours are privately

owned and don’t fall under government oversight. That’s where the BC Seniors Living Association (BCSLA) comes in. The best residences adhere to the high standards set by the BCSLA and have their Seal of Approval designation. BCSLA recently revitalized their Seal of Approval process, and it is intense; it rigorously addresses health policies, safety measures, staff training and resident services. These changes are timely, and in these uncertain times, seniors can be confident that retirement residences like ours with a BCSLA Seal of Approval are trustworthy.

Thanksgiving service at All Saints honours first responders
Church raised $700 for Delta Hospital Foundation DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
All Saints Ladner gave their thanks to first responders and frontline workers this Thanksgiving Sunday for keeping the community safe throughout the pandemic. Toward the end of their service, the church presented a $700 cheque to Shari Barr from the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation from the fundraising they began in September. “I think it was a great success. All Saints Ladner always feels good when we can give back to the community in some way,” says Rev. Robin Ruder Celiz. “It felt good, and it felt like the right thing to do, especially over Thanksgiving, it’s an extremely appropriate time.” The fundraiser was an open invitation for people who wanted to donate to the Delta Hospital, and the church
just simply collected the donations that were “earmarked” for the foundation, explains Celiz. Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord attended among the 40 other people who came to the service, as he was one of the first responders’ representatives invited. Alongside the fundraising for the hospital, the church also donated fresh produce, which had been decorating the altar, to the food bank as part of their usual Thanksgiving tradition. “This time, we decided on [giving back] to the Delta Hospital, certainly giving thanks for all the first responders. It was just easier to name the hospital, as opposed to any one group like the police or firefighters [or paramedics] ... they all go to the hospital, so that seems to be good, neutral ground,” added Celiz. He expects that more proceeds will likely trickle in from those who may have missed the donation deadline.

Delta school board looking at enhancing VIRTUAL PUBLIC COVID safety measures BOARD MEETING FRASER HEALTH
JOIN OUR
Delta school board trustees are considering additional COVID-19 health and safety measures including a vaccine mandate for school district staff. At an in-camera meeting on Tuesday, trustees directed school district staff to begin work immediately on a safety policy and/or procedure, to provide, amongst other safety measures, the viability of mandatory vaccinations against SARS-CoV-2, for all staff. “When it comes to a serious illness with the potential for loss of life such as COVID-19, the board of trustees believes we should implement as many health and safety precautions as possible,” said board chair Val Windsor in a news release. “We have a duty to keep
our schools safe for our students and staff. As most COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths are now among unvaccinated adults, we believe that everyone who is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine should get vaccinated. “We recognize that introducing a vaccine mandate is a highly sensitive and complex issue. As a result, we are committed to doing our due diligence and approaching this issue in a careful and thoughtful manner.” In recent weeks, the B.C. Government has put together an advisory committee to develop a framework and guidance for boards of education to use if they choose to implement mandatory vaccines. The government advisory committee includes representatives
from the British Columbia Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA), the Ministry of Education and B.C. School Trustees Association. Later this week, all board chairs across the province will be meeting with the Ministry of Education to discuss implications and to hear more about the provincial direction and health advice. The school district will present a report on this matter at a future meeting of the board. “In the meantime, we extend our thanks to Delta School District staff who have already done their part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by getting the vaccine, and strongly encourage those who haven’t been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible,” added Windsor.

It has been vacant for years, a neglected reminder of previous attempts to create a new, revitalized look for Ladner Village and the waterfront. But it looks like the end could finally be in sight for the Delta-owned Seven Seas building at the harbour as the city pushes forward a revital-
ization vision. Following a final report by the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee last year, and further work and public consultation by the city, planning staff recently presented an interim report to council outlining proposed new land uses including increasing residential densities in the village. The report also outlined a waterfront

concept that builds on “big ideas” developed previously including, among other things, a re-purposing of the Seven Seas site’s existing foundation for outdoor events, enhanced pedestrian movement along the north side of Chisholm Street, clustered residential uses on the Spot on the Water park site, programmable spaces overlooking the water and traffic calming at the intersection of Georgia and Chisholm. “Staff have begun to explore conversion of the Seven Seas site into a public space. A structural assessment has been undertaken to determine any work necessary to remove the existing building, maintain the foundation, and install safety equipment such as railings. Staff are exploring cost options as well as open space elements including place-making ties to the rest of the Village, and would report back to Council separately,” the report also explains. A previous advisory committee over a decade earlier had come up with ideas to revitalize the village and waterfront, with the Seven Seas site tabbed as an important component, seen as a catalyst to encourage redevelopment of the area.
Delta, which purchased the land with money from Port Metro Vancouver, selected Quay Property Management in 2011 to submit a detailed proposal for a marketplace. That proposal was later abandoned. Council then decided to put the sites up for sale with no takers as the city’s inability to secure longer term water lot leases from the province was seen as an impediment. In 2014, council went through a rezoning process for the Seven Seas site and the adjacent Chisholm Street parcel formerly occupied by the Brackman-Ker warehouse, a move aimed at enticing potential buyers for the parcels. The new waterfront mixed-use zone was to permit a wide range of uses, including retail, office and service commercial, eating and drinking establishments, moorage and marina, recreation and culture, as well as limited residential. As far as the city’s next steps this year, staff anticipate that the land use plan, waterfront design and design guidelines will be completed early this fall, with the draft bylaws prepared for final community feedback and council’s consideration before the end of the year.

Washroom replacements coming for Memorial and Lions parks in Ladner SANDOR GYARMATI

New washrooms are finally coming to a pair of Delta parks. Council recently agreed to award a contract for the design and construction administration of new washroom buildings at Memorial Park and at Ladner Lions Park, a contract costing $120,151. A report to council notes the design of the washrooms will be based on the recent Ferry Road washrooms building. The replacement schedule is for the design to be completed in early 2022 and for construction to be completed later next year. The total cost including construction is estimated at $1.1 million. A condition assessment was carried out by a consultant in 2020 for

33 city park washrooms and fieldhouses. That assessment recommended the washroom buildings at Ladner Lions Park and Memorial Park be
replaced as they are at the end of their lifecycles. The report also notes that the design and construction of other park washrooms, including
the ones at Cromie Park and Gunderson Park, is proposed for subsequent years. Community sports organizations that utilized the Cromie Park field house have been temporarily accommodated as that building is not suitable for use. A previous report to council on the state of the city’s park washrooms notes, “These older facilities do not have the ventilation systems that are required by today’s modern building code. The floors are stained through years of use and emit odours that are embedded in the old concrete flooring. Many of the sites are not accessible for those with mobility limitations.” A condition assessment was carried out by a consultant in 2020 for 33 city park washrooms and fieldhouses.
That assessment recommended the washroom buildings at Ladner Lions Park and Memorial Park be replaced as they are at the end of their lifecycles. The report also notes that the design and construction of other park washrooms, including the ones at Cromie Park and Gunderson Park, is proposed for subsequent years. Community sports organizations that utilized the Cromie Park field house have been
temporarily accommodated as that building is not suitable for use. A previous report to council on the state of the city’s park washrooms notes, “These older facilities do not have the ventilation systems that are required by today’s modern building code. The floors are stained through years of use and emit odours that are embedded in the old concrete flooring. Many of the sites are not accessible for those with mobility limitations.”

Delta Parks and Rec provides work plan update DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture has had an eventful year so far. That’s according to a six-month status update their annual work plan presented to council on Oct. 4. The update examined program participation numbers, other service delivery areas and ongoing projects. “During the first half of 2021, the Provincial Health Officer’s order allowed for the continued operation of facilities and parks. Recognizing that these services are critical to the health and wellbeing of Delta residents, staff continued to adjust to safety plans, and policies and procedures in order to operate facilities within the provincial health guidelines,”
reads the department’s report. Among the programs with the highest in-person participation numbers for the first half of 2021 were 89,337 people who went swimming, 58,313 people who went to work out in weight rooms and 7,990 people who went skating. Additionally, the department’s staff made 19,502 seniors’ wellness calls and provided 1,765 Delta residents transportation to local immunization clinics. “That’s just tremendous and a great use of our seniors’ bus for that really important transportation service,” said Mayor George Harvie. Alongside their programs, the department delivered numerous service agreements, awarded contracts and implemented the Rotary Club of Delta Storywalk features and the Responsible
Drinking in Parks pilot project. “With the pandemic, there’s been a lot of stress and weight on all our staff, and especially on Parks, Recreation and Culture staff,” added Coun. Jeannie Kanakos. “I just want to take a minute to say thank you to all of you who are working so hard to ensure that Delta stays safe in these pandemic times. Things change from week to week, and our staff pivots and make adjustments ... our team is amazing.” Current ongoing projects are installing a synthetic turf field at Winskill Park, improving sport field drainage and irrigation, the Ladner Covered Multi-Sport Court, installing vehicle charging stations at various locations, and completing accessibility upgrades at the South Delta Recreation Centre, reads the report.

Delta officers part of charity ride thatraises $190,000 MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was an experience of a lifetime for three Delta Police officers who participated in this year’s Cops For Cancer ride as members of the Tour de Valley team. Rookie riders Bianca Boyce, Grayson Hawkins and Terra Schmuland pedalled 438 km over five days last month and helped raise more than $190,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Cops for Cancer, which was launched in 1994, sees law enforcement and emergency services personnel cycle hundreds of km to raise money for pediatric cancer research and support. There are four tours taking place throughout B.C. that have collectively raised more than $48 million since its inception. Tour de Valley made stops at 26 schools from Delta to Chilliwack. Training for the tour began back in the spring as the riders built up their

the kids and the pure joy on their faces gave me so much emotion and energy that it was impossible not to be able to push through,” said Boyce. “It was the most amazing
experience to be a part of and riding for the kids and getting to meet the kids made it worth every bump, scratch or bruise that we got from training or riding.”
The trio’s participation continues a tradition for the Delta Police Department that hosted a barbecue and a sendoff for the team on day one of the tour that included stops in Tsawwassen and North Delta. “Our officers, constables Boyce, Schmuland and Hawkings, similar to other Delta Police officers in years past, volunteered their time to train, fundraise, and ride along other dedicated law enforcement officers to raise money in support of pediatric cancer research and the care of children and families who are impacted by this terrible disease,” said Insp. Kim Campbell who oversees the department’s School Liaison Officer program that Boyce is a part of. “I just want to recognize their hard work and sacrifices they made, while remaining committed to serving the community and citizens of Delta. We’re so proud of them and their commitment to our profession and to children throughout the province.”

Community Port Authority announces community investment program for Delta The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has announced the details of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project community investment program, which will provide $6 million to Delta organizations and students, should the project proceed. RBT2 is a proposed new marine container terminal led by the port authority. If approved and built, the project would play a critical role in supporting Canadian exporters and consumers of goods who increasingly want to trade with economies around the world, notes the Port Authority in a news release. “We have a long history of supporting local organizations, programs, and initiatives that enrich the lives of the people who live and work in port communities like Delta,” said Duncan Wilson, vice
president, environment and external affairs at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. “We are excited to have the opportunity to support Delta students and community-based organizations through the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project community investment program, should the project proceed.” The program includes three components: a community fund, community grants, and an education fund. For the $3.5 million community fund, organizations that support the Delta community may apply for a maximum of $50,000 per year, in line with the port authority’s existing community investment program. As part of the $2 million community grants component, organizations that support the Delta community will be invited to submit grant proposals for a minimum of $50,000
and will be selected based on a matrix of factors. The $500,000 education fund will be made available to Grade 12 students at public schools in Delta who are pursuing post-secondary training or education. Funding will be distributed in phases, with an initial $500,000 from the community fund made available should a positive project decision be received from the federal government. The remaining funds will be made available once a final investment decision is made and will continue throughout the duration of construction. Additional details on the evaluation criteria and application process will be shared at a later date. Learn more about the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project and the community investment program at portvancouver.com/ RBT2.

walk alone, many more are hungry and without adequate shelter or healthcare, it can be hard to sit around a table laden with food and goodies and anticipating a week of leftovers and sifting through countless recipes of what to do with leftover turkey, stuffing and
veg. In a world where the divide between the “haves” and “have nots” is brought into focus; and how this pandemic has disproportionately affected First Nations and minority groups it is hard to sit in the comfort of our homes and be thankful. But I wonder if it is because of the suffering and struggle in life that there is a deeper call and purpose to thanksgiving. Maybe our thanksgiving can extend beyond turkey to include a deep appreciation and posture of learning from those who are different from us, to listen to the wisdom of the elders and to walk more humbly with the Divine. In this way a season of thanksgiving becomes a way of life and living in harmony in the world.

A season of thanksgiving, as I like to think of this time of year is typically a comfortable time of year filled with tasty food and fellowship with the ones we love. And there is a lot to be thankful for as we reconnect with friends and family, especially during a time of great anxiety and uncertainty that the pandemic has brought. In this way it makes sense that thanksgiving extend beyond one day or weekend to become a season in order to make time and give due thanks for the many ways in which we have been blessed during a time that for many has been filled with tremendous loss and grief. But there is an edge to our thankfulness and a season of Thanksgiving. In a world where many

reminder of a personal connection to our past. Art we enjoy could evoke a memory, or a scene which brings a smile, but it always enriches our world in an emotional way. Sometimes it celebrates, records, invites, provokes or communicates the beauty as well as the struggles of our world and our personal journey. For almost 50 years, the South Delta Artists’ Guild has become a home for art lovers with a broad range of abilities who are there to learn, grow, share and exhibit. New artists develop their talents and skills through art education workshops and demonstrations. The studio provides social interaction for shared interests and space when home has none. New comers will find a welcome and a place to work from Monday’s life drawing with live models to dropin sessions throughout the week, where fellow artists give encouragement and advice.
Painting and enjoying the great outdoors with the South Delta Plein Air Painters DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Bring your painting supplies and a tasty bagged-lunch to South Delta Plein Air Painters’ weekly meetings at spontaneous outdoor locations throughout Ladner and Tsawwassen. As the name implies, the group meets and paints exclusively in the outdoors together around South Delta and have been doing so since March of this year. “Because of COVID, a lot of people were locked
up and, you know, not doing much. And by the time March came around, a whole year [later], some people wanted to get out and do things that they could actually do,” explains Delta artist Rod Winning who is the founder of the group. South Delta Plein Air Painters operates based off of a weekly email announcing where the next painting location will be, and if a painter feels like going that week, they just simply show up. It’s meant to be low commitment and low
stakes where everyone is welcome, regardless of the kind of supplies, methods or abilities you have. “It’s just interesting to see what everybody else does. That’s a part of the learning experience of artists. As you do your art, you learn from other people and you get other ideas,” said Winning. He has been plein air painting with the Richmond group, Men in Hats, for a couple years and wanted to create a South Delta-based group. Each week, there’s a
different turnout and a different group of people who join, and so far, there’s about 50 people on the email list. “I have a lot of fun organizing it and everybody thanks me so much for all my work – and it’s really not that much work. I just tell them where I’m going to be and that’s it ... I’m having fun and everybody else is having fun, and as long as we pick a nice, dry day, we’ll be just fine,” he says. As the weather gets chillier, and potentially wetter, the group will
continue to try meeting on dry days, which may change from their usual Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. schedule. Currently, the group has some of their paintings on display at the Ladner Pioneer Library, where they’ve sold three paintings so far. If you’re interested in joining the South Delta Plein Air Painters email list, email Winning at rod. winning@gmail.com, and if you’re interested in their art, check out the hashtag #SDPAP on Facebook and Instagram.

Brianna Jassmann taking her career to the University of Calgary next September MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Brianna Jassmann will be realizing her childhood dream across the Rockies next September. The South Delta Secondary Grade 12 student has officially signed with the University of Calgary women’s soccer team as part of its 2022 recruiting class. “I had a couple of Zoom calls with them and it all happened pretty fast,” smiled the attacking midfield standout. “It was just crazy when I got the offer as I was like ‘oh my god’ this is everything I have been working for since I was four-years-old. I have always wanted to go to university and play soccer. If I want to be a professional soccer player, this was the thing I needed to do. Basically, all of my dreams just came true.” Jassmann was playing in the B.C. Premier Soccer League with Coastal F.C. before moving over to the Richmond-based Total Soccer System Academy and its Rovers women’s program under director Kevin Booker. It has a reputation off sending players to the next level. The Rovers are part of the Metro Women’s Soccer League during the fall season, giving Jassmann the opportunity to play older competition. It was SDSS teacher and soccer coach Stephen Burns who helped her connect with Dinos’ head coach Troye Flannery over the summer and initiate the recruiting process. Jassmann didn’t have to look far for additional information on the Calgary program either. Second-year Dino Breanne Gallagher is not only her former Sun Devil teammate, she had a close connection with Jassmann back in 2019, the last time there was a high school soccer season.

Grade 12 student and University of Calgary women’s soccer team commit Brianna Jassmann with her South Delta Secondary School coaches Stephen Burns (left) and Brent Sweeney. The Calgary football program is also loaded with SDSS graduates. “I know people from other teams and stuff that went to TSS and have gone on to play university and it was a big thing that helped me with this whole process,” she said. “Breanne was a big help too. She was like amazing. We were ‘big buddies’ on the school soccer team. It was the ‘B-squared’ thing that was going on. “Part of (going to Calgary) is being close to home and knowing there were (friends) I would already know at the school, just from the South Delta commu-
nity. I have never moved out anywhere before. It will make it lot more easy to settle in and everything knowing they have the same connections as me.” She admits pursuing her goal amid the pandemic has not been easy, dealing with everything from cancelled games and tournaments, to limited training for the past 18 months. “I knew it would be a challenge, a different way to get to the same spot. Training was very individual based. Training in masks in our separate bubbles. That was the difficult part as soccer is obviously a team sport,”

continued Jassmann. She is a terrific all-round athlete who earlier played on the school’s volleyball and basketball teams while thriving as a cross-country runner too. She is hoping to get an opportunity to be a key member of the soccer team next spring after missing out on her grade 10 and 11 years due to COVID-19. “That’s what I’m praying for. Now I get to be one of the ‘big buddies.’ It is just so much fun,” she laughed. “Honestly, some girls come out of soccer ‘retirement’ just to be part of that environment.”

OBITUARIES
TOWERS, Marie-Louise Winifred
James Patrick O’Toole February 22, 1969 - October 6, 2019 Until We Meet Again…. The special memories of you will always bring a smile. If only we could have you back for just a little while. Then we could sit and visit again just like we used to do. You always meant so very much, and always will do, too. The fact you are no longer here will always cause us pain. But you are forever in our hearts…. until we meet again.
Lovingly remembered by your family...
Passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021 after a long struggle with multiple health problems. She was born in Preston, Lancashire, England March 23rd, 1949 and came to Canada with her parents before starting school in Ladner. Father “Ted” was a fixture in the Ladner, BC community. Ted (Edward) Towers was from Churchtown, England. Her Mother, “Nicole” (Emillienne) Towers (nee Patout) was from Paris, France. Louise, as she was known to her friends, was a multi-talented woman. She was very musical and became a dancer, dancing professionally, and then later had her own studio and taught ballet, tap and jazz dancing for 13 years. She was a writer and wrote a series of stories called the Fur Chronicles. She also wrote and illustrated a children’s book called “The Adventures of Ewenice - Ewenice makes a Friend. She loved dragons and Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern was her favourite series!
Louise was a philomath by nature, always wanting to learn new things. She studied and developed the ability use sign language. She had a particular love and empathy for Deaf-Blind people. She was trained in Reflexology, Reiki, Massage and Polarity, and she taught courses in Contact Healing and ESP Lab. She worked with mentally and physically handicapped, as a Homemaker/Personal Care Attendant, as a Special Needs Worker, as a group home worker and as a night school Instructor. She was also a groom at the Standardbred track! Louise is probably most known for her love of animals - horses and small dogs and cats and anything that was fury or feathered. She was also artistic and left many adorable drawings of her many pets with almost human expressions. She was interested in, and drew, First-Nations portraits, rendering realistic renditions of her subjects. In her earlier years she adopted many rescue cats and dogs and in her later years she had a rescue Chihuahua, Jade, who was a certified Service Dog and her constant companion. She contributed financially to many rescue groups, the most recent and her favourite being Gray Muzzle Rescue. Predeceased by both her parents and being an only child Louise died with no family close-by, but with friends with her, and many local and distant friends communicating with her in her last days. Louise has several families of cousins in the UK, who will miss her communications and texts. As her mobility decreased, the internet and TV became her best friends - she watched all the talent programs and knew all the contestants, watched all the Nat Geo Vet programs, loved Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, and spent hours every day on Facebook talking to friends all over the world and playing fantasy games. Her many Facebook and other friends and acquaintances will miss her interesting ideas and conversations. At Louise’s request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Gray Muzzle Rescue would be most appreciated. https://www.greymuzzle.org/
TOIGO, Elizabeth Emily
October 25th, 1933 - September 24th, 2021 Elizabeth Toigo was born October 25, 1933 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver BC, to Carl and Maud Rohwer. At an early age, Elizabeth and her family moved to Powell River, where Carl got a job at the pulp and paper mill and where Elizabeth would marry her high school sweetheart, Peter C. Toigo. An exceptional entrepreneur, Peter eventually moved his family to the Lower Mainland, settling in Tsawwassen in 1964. As the family grew, so did Peter’s business portfolio: He established Shato Holdings, a real estate development company, in 1969, and added the restaurant chain White Spot in the early eighties. Due to Peter’s untimely passing in 1993, Elizabeth became Chairperson of Shato. Under her guidance, the business has continued to thrive to the present day. Elizabeth was very philanthropic, a major donor to many causes around Vancouver and Delta, including the Delta Hospital Foundation. But she avoided the spotlight, in her own way preferring to do things for others. She kept her growing family stocked with her legendary chocolate chip cookies and, every year, made a special point of taking each of her many grandchildren Christmas shopping. Christmas Day was always a special time, with the extended family gathered around the enormous dining room table at her house.
Elizabeth was extremely proud of all of her children and grandkids and lived for their moments together. She loved to travel with friends and family, preferably by car (she preferred not to fly), and made several runs down the I-5 to her home in Rancho Mirage. From there, she was just a short trip to one of her favourite places - Disneyland -which she visited many times. She loved being there with family, and the grandkids loved being there with Gramma. She used to say that when she passed on, she wanted to come back as one of the tiny Disney sparrows that are found everywhere in the park. Elizabeth was a huge fan of the Vancouver Giants; watching them win the Memorial Cup in 2007 was one of her all-time highlights. She loved The Nutcracker, The Phantom of the Opera, high tea at the Empress on Vancouver Island, and the glorious rose garden behind her home. Elizabeth will be remembered by her 6 children and spouses Louise Greene, Wendy Toigo, Peter and Lesley Toigo, Roy and Monica Toigo, Ron and Michele Toigo, Rick Toigo, her 15 grandchildren, and her 14 great grandchildren. And her many friends who knew her as an extraordinarily kind, caring, generous, selfless person with a wonderful sense of humour. Her grace and class, her support and encouragement, her constant positivity, and above all, her unconditional love, helped shape her family’s lives for the better. As she would always say when you left or the end of a phone call, “Bye for Now” Online condolences can be made at deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home 604.946.6040

SIKSTROM, Donnaray Estelle (Donna) January 4, 1933 - October 1, 2021
RUSSELL, Virginia Ann (nee Clippingdale) Virginia Ann Russell, born July 30, 1931, passed peacefully from this world September 28, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Ginny was a beautiful woman - smart, kind, and loving. She is survived by her beloved husband, Richard Doncaster (“Don”) Russell, daughters Linda Jones (Michael), Morna Edmundson, Mary Joyce (“Jo”) Twaites (Bob) and brother Richard (Linda). Predeceased by her brother John (Dorothy). Ginny was a loving grandmother to Bryan, Leslie, Laurie, Julie, James, Owen and their partners, and great grandsons Elliot and Finley. She was devoted to her large extended family in Canada and in Australia, following their many varied accomplishments and challenges with great interest and love. Throughout their long life together, Don and Ginny demonstrated an exemplary respect for others through their actions and words, setting an important standard of behaviour for their family that will be their enduring legacy. Virginia was a teacher in the Toronto area when she was newly married. During their 70 year marriage, she and Don lived for some time on four different continents. At 38, they packed up the family for a year’s sabbatical in Japan. Ginny graduated from UBC at age 50 with a combined degree in Asian Studies and Special Education. In her 60s she wrote three children’s novels. In her 70s she helped her church assist a refugee family from Myanmar to find their feet in her community. Through her 80s, she took courses through Delta Elder College.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Donna Sikstrom at the age of 88. She was predeceased by her sister, Gustine “Gussy” (George) and brother, Fred (Madge). Donna was born in Vancouver to Fridolph and Ida Sikstrom and attended Kitsilano Secondary School. She worked for the British Columbia Electric Company before joining the Vancouver Public Library, where she remained for thirty years until retirement. Apart from working, Donna spent most of her time caring for family members. During her final years she lived in her home in Ladner, and later at the Delta View Life Enrichment Centre, Cascades Unit. The caring staff there, were fond of Donna and unfailingly treated her with gentleness and professionalism. Donna was a kind and gentle soul. She loved nature and animals, especially her houseful of cats. She will be remembered warmly by her cousin Mary Crumblehulme (Brian) of Mayne Island and her many friends. A memorial service for Donna, and other recently deceased residents will be held at the Delta View Life Enrichment Centre. Due to the COVID pandemic, details are not yet available.
