s a Delta resident for over four decades where George and his wife Gil raised their children and now explore playgrounds and trails with their grand-daughter, Mayor George Harvie’s roots are firmly planted in Delta. “It’s the honour of my life to serve as Delta’s Mayor” says Harvie. “This is where Gil and I have raised our family and we don’t plan on living anywhere else; Delta is our home. It’s the people who live and work here that make Delta the vibrant community that it is.”
Prior to taking office as Mayor for the City of Delta in October 2018, George Harvie’s career in local government spanned over 40 years serving in a number of high ranking positions at the City of Burnaby and later in Delta as City Manager. Harvie’s commitment to building a stronger, more sustainable, and inclusive community remains a key priority. While serving as City Manager for almost two decades, Harvie oversaw the implementation of prudent financial planning and policy goals to help the City continue to advance long-term plans and invest in new community recreation, sports, social, and active transportation infrastructure while keeping the City debt free. Strong and proactive fiscal planning continues under Mayor Harvie and Delta Council’s leadership, despite the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent noteworthy achievements include the new North Delta Track and Field Facility, the current redevelopment of the existing outdoor Ladner lacrosse box into a covered, multi-use sport facility, the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre, and the North Delta Centre for the Arts.
Mayor George V. Harvie
Recognizing the challenges Delta residents and businesses continue to face as a result of the pandemic, Harvie is proud of the work of staff at the City in adapting new ways to serve the community, support local businesses, and keep residents safe. “The Delta community has come together and shown tremendous resilience during these tough times. The uptake and positive response to initiatives like the Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Support Team’s We Love Delta campaigns and events, and the City’s expanded patio program have been exceptional. This type of collaboration and support is a key part of community building as we work towards a stronger, more vibrant Delta.”
Mayor Harvie and Council recognize the integral role played by social service agencies like Deltassist in the community, who are pulling together to safely provide ongoing support to Delta families and individuals in need. Strong partnerships with community partners and local service agencies have also helped the City launch new initiatives like Delta’s Mobility and Accessibility Committee and the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism. These initiatives, and others like them, are helping the City move towards a more accessible Delta for everyone and ensure that the values of inclusion and diversity are reflected in City policies and throughout the community. Mayor Harvie and Council continue taking strong actions to protect the environment, including the implementation of an electric vehicle strategy and an Urban Forest Strategy with the goal of planting over a thousand trees each year across Delta. As part of this work, the City will be updating its Community Energy Emissions Plan and engaging with residents and businesses in the new year on further actions to reduce community-wide emissions.

Delta School District is working to be a foundation for Indigenous voices Dani Penaloza Contributing Writer
The ‘ever-morphing’ team has been working in the district for eight years, and they’re only gaining more and more momentum as the years go by For nearly a decade, the Delta School District’s Indigenous Education team has been working to bring an Indigenous lens and perspective to both inside and outside of classrooms throughout the city. “It’s really all about providing opportunities for success for students with Indigenous ancestry, and allowing Indigenous voices to actually have a say in how we want to learn, and how we want to do things and how we want to be a part of our society,” says Heidi Wood, an Indigenous Education coordinator with the team who was raised in Haida Gwaii. Led by the District vice-principal of Indigenous Education, Diane Jubinville, the team that originally started as a handful of support workers has grown to nearly 20 people, including those working at Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN). In recognition of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, they joined TFN on Sept. 30 for an Orange Shirt Day walk around Tsawwassen Mills and also offered
virtual teachings about the importance and history behind the day. The other side of their work is teaching fellow educators in the school district. “A lot of people want to know, ‘how do I incorporate Indigenous education?’ So, a lot of them were like, ‘I want to create a button blanket’ or ‘I want to make a totem pole’, and that’s not what it’s about,” says Lyndsay Smith, another Indigenous Education coordinator. She explains that bigger-picture thinking is key to decolonizing your classroom, like incorporating the First Peoples Principles of Learning into your teaching, for example, and sharing the teachings learned during the team’s workshops and educational sessions. Though the school year has only just begun, the team has already fundraised for the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and for a traditional journey canoe that they hope to incorporate into their teachings. At the beginning of every week, they
continue to facilitate weekly territory acknowledgments for Delta classrooms to tune into over Zoom, which they started doing January last year. They’re also working to finish adding cedar “reconciliation posts”, carved by TFN artist Karl Morgan, to provide more information on the importance of the previously planted cedar trees at Delta schools. “We still have a long way to go, but there is that momentum happening ... We have students self-identifying in the classroom with our cultural facilitators there or when our teachers are there, and that is huge because they are proud of who they are ... That’s pretty satisfying,” says Jubinville, who is Cree Salteaux from Treaty 4 territory’s Pasqua First Nation. Some of the district’s Indigenous Education team is made up of settlers, including Smith and fellow Indigenous Education coordinator Cody Forbes. “It’s my responsibility to uplift and highlight voices that aren’t heard as often. So, being
in the Indigenous Education department, I feel like I can step back and let those voices speak much louder than mine,” says Forbes. By having a non-Indigenous person teaching about these things, explains Forbes, educators are more comfortable asking questions and admitting they don’t know everything. “You’re going to screw up, and that’s fine,” he says, explaining advice he was given from an elder while teaching on Vancouver Island. Stay tuned for the many projects the team has planned for the rest of the year, including participating in the Roc Your Mocs campaign again and creating a legacy garden full of plants local to the area to then share with other schools to create their own reciprocity gardens.

DPD’s Deputy Chief Michelle Davey and the ride-along that changed everything Dani Penaloza Contributing Writer
Davey reflects on her career path and the work that lies ahead for equity, diversity and inclusion Michelle Davey didn’t originally plan to go into policing.
Davey joined the Delta Police Department community a part of the solution, really. And (DPD) in February this year as Deputy Chief. in a bigger city, that’s tough to do.”
In fact, it was on the tail-end of a human kinetics degree at the University of British Columbia when her whole future shifted.
Currently, she’s in charge of the administration bureau with the DPD, which is the support services side of the department and includes human resources, training, recruiting, IT and finance.
During a ride-along through the Downtown Vancouver Eastside with one of her friends from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), she suddenly realized that policing was her calling. “I was actually physically helping to lift a gentleman who was intoxicated and needed a lift to the detox centre,” Davey recalled. “You know, physically being able to care for this individual and get them there safely and know that they’re going to be okay for the night – just all of that, it was overwhelming to me that it was something I really needed to do.” She was hired on with the VPD the day before her last exam at UBC and would eventually climb to the rank of superintendent over nearly 25 years with their department.
She’s also dedicated to bringing more diversity to the department.
Though the findings of an external audit, which looked at the department’s policies, procedures and hiring practices with an “It’s an honour to be able to lead as the first equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) lens, female Deputy Chief for the Delta Police were “very positive”, Davey acknowledges Department, but it’s an honour to also be able how there will always be room for to come to a community that is so connected improvement. with its police department,” she says. “EDI is a journey, and it’s something that Working in a smaller community has been we’re on forever. Overall, Davey says she is incredibly lucky to be working her dream job, and she hopes that others from the Delta community could have their own career dreams realized with the DPD. “We are looking for people who really want to stay a part of this community, you know, not having to drive through the tunnel or over a bridge to get to work. While we are proud of our awards, our main priority is to inspire our students and grow our dance community. Studio West Dance teachers inspire with their artistic creativity, knowledge, and extensive professional experience as dancers and educators. Our parents also inspire as role models through their volunteer efforts, dedication, and commitment to their children and the Studio West Dance community. At Studio West Dance, not only do we develop a child’s skill set for performing arts, but our community fosters the development of gratitude, self-respect, and pride. These attributes are important for the development of our children, our neighbours, and the entire community of the greater Vancouver area.

Paul and Karen have owned and ran a Smart Home business for over 16 years. ounded in 2009, Sarah Gallop Design Inc. (known as SGDI) has become a go-to for great design throughout South Delta. With Rob + Sarah Gallop having deep roots here (4th and 5th generation), there was never a question about where SGDI’s office and expansive design library would be located. Focusing on single family homes; the company began with design for renovations, followed by new home interior design, and new home architectural design. Initially the majority of SGDI’s projects - both renovation and new construction were located in Delta, which gave the ability to build the business and portfolio close to home. Now clients from all areas of the lower mainland, and much farther, come to SGDI to bring their dream homes to life. Being local has also allowed the opportunity to work with many wonderful local builders and tradespeople who also call South Delta home. SGDI has grown to see hundreds of beautiful homes completed, locally and throughout the interior of British Columbia, as well as across Canada and the USA. Dedication to great design and the client experience has fostered growth to a unified team of 19 who collaborate and are dedicated to the realization of their clients’ dreams. SGDI has been recognized for its accomplishments through several industry awards programs; most recently winning the Grand HAVAN Award for ‘Interior Designer of The Year’, and The Delta Optimist Reader’s Choice Award for ‘Best Interior Design’.
Rob and Sarah Gallop
Despite all the growth and acclaim awarded to SGDI over the years, they still love taking on smaller jobs too – especially renovations where creative problem solving really makes a difference to the clients’ lives. South Delta has a lot of houses in need of some increased function and personality, and homeowners in this community often seek SGDI to transform them into a special home. So much so, that in 2019 Sarah + Rob launched Top Shelf Design Inc. As a division of SGDI, Top Shelf Design is a dedicated and specialized team of designers, offering the same high-quality design services that have come to be expected of SGDI, but focusing on refined renovation and new construction interior design for everyday homes. Sarah and Rob remain committed to the community through their contributions and involvement with the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation (where Sarah sits on the Board of Directors) and the City of Delta (where she currently sits on the Advisory Design Panel and has also sat on the Heritage Advisory Commission and the Ladner Village Revitalization Advisory Committee). In business for 12 years now, SGDI has had the honour of re-serving some of their earliest past clients on further renovations, new homes, and vacation properties. Being ingrained in the Delta community, clients have become neighbours and friends. Sarah and Rob have the opportunity to see families grow up in the homes they have created and been honoured to be told just how much their designs have improved their clients’ wellbeing and home environments.
