Wetlands Workforce removes 4.77 tons of debris so far from shorelines throughout Delta
The assigned pod of five are currently working on the Boundary Bay Dyke area DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u ti n g Wr i t e r
A giant stuffed rabbit, a creepy wooden crib and a toilet seat are only some of the items that the team from Wetlands Workforce has found along shorelines they’ve been cleaning up since late September. The organization – whose vision is to protect, restore and promote B.C.’s wetlands and watersheds – deployed a “work pod” of five to specifically tackle their Fraser River Clean-Up project, which they began on Sept. 20. Starting with the South Arm Marshes and Westham Island, both close to Ladner, they are now working along the Boundary Bay Dyke area until Nov. 5 and have cleaned a total of 29 km so far. “First and foremost, the project is aimed at healthy watersheds, and estuaries are particularly important ecosystems,
BRIANNA IWABUCHI PHOTO
The Wetlands Workforce has been removing debris throughout Delta as part of their Fraser River CleanUp project, which they started on Sept. 20. especially for all the migratory birds that are making use of that habitat in this area ... From a nature perspective, these ecosystems are very delicate and require a lot of attention,” says Brianna Iwabuchi, a Wetlands Workforce field-crew coordinator. So far, the pod has
removed 4.77 tons of debris, both large and small-scale, from the shorelines, which is early equivalent to the weight of 10 horses. The most commonly found debris is Styrofoam, some of which is so large that it requires multiple people to lift and some of which
is so small that it has to be trapped with a pool net, says Iwabuchi. Tires, boards, rope, bottles, lighters, plastic bags and shotgun casings are also popular finds. “Five people working five days a week are making that big of a difference, and I think that’s a really cool thing – it
shows that small numbers that are determined can really do a lot,” says Iwabuchi. The group still has about 20 km more to go, with the future sites including Tsawwassen First Nation’s beach shoreline and Richmond’s West Dyke Trail.
“The Fraser River is such a large river that the amount of debris coming out of it is quite constant,” she adds. “And it’s not just the mainland itself that’s contributing to the debris, it’s anything upriver that’s being pushed all the way down. It’s kind of like a pathway for it.” All the waste they’re collecting from the shorelines is being brought to Revolution Resource Recovery, who will sort and then recycle and reuse the material that can be repurposed. Wetlands Workforce is a project “supported by the Healthy Watersheds Initiative, which is delivered by the Real Estate Foundation of B.C. and Watersheds B.C., with financial support from the province of British Columbia as part of its $10 billion COVID-19 response.” For more information on the organization and their projects, see: www. wetlandsworkforce.ca/.

A proposed 20-unit townhouse development fronting the Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, came down to defeat Tuesday despite the majority on council voting in favour, following a public hearing. Requiring an Official Community Plan amendment, rezoning and other approvals, including an amendment to the site’s land-use designation under Metro Vancouver’s Regional Growth Strategy, the application was to subdivide a portion of 5847 12th Ave. and consolidate it with 5766 16th Ave. The remaining property would have continued to be a part of the Beach Grove Golf Club. The golf course would have sold the site to the developer if the application was successful. Applicant Dean Bauck with Personal Real Estate Corporation told council it has been a lengthy process and assured the development would be a good addition to the community. “We found the salient, underlining theme is that people are uneasy about change. We empathize with them as we all tend to get comfortable with the status quo and sometimes are fearful of deviating from it,” said Bauck. One of the residents who expressed support for the application said Delta needs to create alternative forms of housing types, particularly in the Beach Grove area, which is dominated by detached, single-family houses. The housing issue was reiterated by several other residents
Instant
who spoke. Another speaker conveying support said the golf club is an important part of the community, adding that only a tiny portion of the course’s green space would be developed. Among the points by another speaker in favour was that the development proposes the planting of 105 trees at a threeto-one replacement ratio. One of the few expressing opposition questioned the private golf club’s reasoning to seek the development, adding green space should not be subtracted from the community. Another conveyed concern about the loss of wildlife habitat, but Delta planning staff later told council a biologist was consulted for the project and no species of risk were identified. The vast majority of speakers online, many golf course members, expressed support, but a speaker who attended the hearing in-person said he’s gathered a petition with about 675 Beach Grove residents who objected, noting Beach Grove is unique and not about removing greenspace.
During council’s discussion following the public hearing, Coun. Dylan Kruger, noting his job is to consider the land use application and not the finances of the golf course, said the project has advantages including its proximity to the town centre. He also noted it’s important to create more walkable and vibrant communities that fulfill housing needs. Coun. Dan Copeland said his biggest concern was the petition and how the project could impact the Beach Grove community, adding it has been expressed that the project could also be the start of further development around the golf course. Voting in opposition, he also said he wonders why the golf course couldn’t be open for the public. Coun. Alicia Guichon was also opposed, saying she’s concerned about the loss of greenspace. Coun. Bruce McDonald, however, said it’s one of the best proposals of that type he’s seen as a member of council. Chairing the meeting as acting mayor, Coun. Jeannie Kanakos was also in favour, saying the
application has been revised to address concerns and, on balance, the trade-offs are a plus for the community. Despite a majority voting in favour, the application was defeated because it involves an Official Community Plan amendment, which requires four affirmative votes on council. Mayor George Harvie did not participate in Tuesday’s hearing because he is a member of the golf club. Coun. Lois Jackson is currently on an approved leave of absence. The golf club wanted to use the proceeds from a successful application to erase a multimillion dollar mortgage taken out years earlier and ensure the long-term financial outlook for the facility. In 2017, the applicant submitted a proposal to subdivide the subject site into 10, single detached lots. Following initial public notification and talks with the city, the applicant put that proposal on hold. A revised proposal for a 22-unit townhouse development was received in December 2019. It was later lowered to 20 units.

The applicant contended that by constructing 20 townhouses in a central location, local residents would be able to downsize, thereby opening up single-detached units for others.

There will be no charges against Delta Police officers in connection to an officer-involved shooting in Langley in 2020. The Chief Civilian Director (CCD) of the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded its investigation and released its decision on Oct. 27. On Oct. 7, 2020 at approximately 6:20 p.m., Delta Police Department officers in the area of 200 Street and 24 Avenue in Langley were conducting an investigation in relation to a prior incident in Delta. When officers attempted to arrest two
men, an interaction occurred, and shots were fired by police. Both men sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. “The CCD has reviewed the available evidence and determined that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer has committed an offence. Accordingly, the matter will not be referred to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges,” states IIO in a news release. “The investigation concluded in May 2021, but due to concurrent court proceedings related to the incident, the IIO did not report publicly
on the decision at that time in hopes the court proceedings may be concluded in the near future. Given the matter remains before the courts, the IIO will not comment further at this time.” The IIO’s public report into the incident will be released on the IIO website once the court proceedings have concluded. Delta Police have declined further comment on the matter. The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officerrelated incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

Fireworks, noisy parties highlight Halloween weekend in Delta DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta Police and Delta Fire Department saw plenty of action during the Halloween weekend, particularly when it came to fireworks, loud get-togethers and motor vehicle incidents. From Friday to Sunday, the DPD accumulated 20 different files for fireworks-related calls and six for noisy party complaints, says spokesperson Cris Leykauf. Officers also dealt with a quicklyresolved high-risk missing person, and a call that was initially for littering. “Officers approached the [idling] vehicle and then were able to see that the occupants had a number of weapons in plain view. Our officers seized fireworks, lighters, a knife, bear spray and a
baton – all from noticing someone littering,” says Leykauf. Delta Fire Chief Guy McKintuck says firefighters attended 66 incidents during the weekend – though not all were related to Halloween-specific doings – with 30 of them being medical calls. Of the 30, two of them were for fireworkscaused facial injuries. “Those injuries and accidents are avoidable. I think it’s really important that people understand using fireworks, how they’re not intended to be used, can potentially be very dangerous. When people choose not to follow the directions, they’re increasing their risk of injury,” says McKintuck. Enforcing the fireworks ban in Delta is tricky business as it’s relatively easy to purchase them outside
of the city and bring them in, acknowledges McKintuck, which is clearly what some folks did. Both the DPD and fire department are continuing to put out messaging informing the public that fireworks, without a permit, are not allowed. Over the weekend, Delta Fire also attended 13 motor vehicle incidents, with two pedestrians being struck as part of that number. “When it’s nice out, clear and not raining, you have more people that are active on Halloween night, and also the night Halloween lands – like, on a weekend – it’s more likely that kids will probably be out later. But realistically, when I look at our calls, it doesn’t really indicate that there was a big issue with kids causing too many issues,” he said.

Delta highway project traffic pattern changes coming SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta- optimist .com
A series of traffic pattern changes are coming as part of the Highway 91 /17 Upgrade Project. Scheduled to begin at the same time in late November, the new River Road interchange will be in full operation, a permanent closure of a portion of 96 Street will be in effect and there will be
a temporary traffic signal westbound on Highway 17 at the River Road interchange on-ramp. The information was provided to Delta council this week from the engineering department, which noted the major highway project has passed 50 per cent completion and is scheduled to be done by spring 2023. Current construction activities include, among
other things, pile driving for guide sign installation, bridge construction, preload placement and removal as well as wall construction. The department report notes once 96 Street is permanently closed off from Highway 17, the temporary traffic signal for westbound Highway 17 traffic is necessary to provide gaps for westbound traffic merging from the
River Road interchange to safely access the left turn lanes at the intersection of Highway 91 Connector and Highway 17, for drivers heading toward Highway 91. The temporary traffic signal will be in place for about 11 months until the interchange at the Highway 91 Connector and Highway 17 is fully constructed. The Highway 91 /17
Upgrade Project is a $260 million undertaking, which includes a series of roadworks aimed at increasing highway efficiency and reducing conflicts between local traffic and commercial vehicles. The upgrade will see improvements to Highway 91 at the Nordel interchange, upgrades to the Highway 91 connector at the Nordel Way intersection, a new interchange at
Highway 17 and Highway 91 connector (Sunbury) and a new interchange at River Road connecting to Highway 17. Funding partners include the Government of Canada through the National Infrastructure component of the New Building Canada Fund, the Province of British Columbia and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.
Three cannabis dispensaries proposed for South Delta SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta- optimist .com
Delta council at its Oct. 25th meeting agreed to advance three new applications to open cannabis retail stores. Noting it’s still early in the process, council voted in favour of a staff recommendation to for-
ward the applications to the public notification and a detailed review stage. The rezoning proposals include portions of the existing buildings at the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre on 56 Street, the Bayside Village mall also on 56 Street and a unit
at Ladner Centre on Ladner Trunk Road. The application by Queensborough Cannabis Co. for a dispensary at the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre, as well as two application from Platinum Projects, on behalf of Inspired Cannabis Co., for stores
at Ladner Centre and Bayside Village, were submitted in August. The largest of the three would be the store at the Tsawwassen Shopping Centre which would be almost 1,900 square feet. The city had already received two other applications for stores in
North Delta, having earlier this summer given preliminary approval for another dispensary on Annacis Island. The city currently does not have specific location criteria for cannabis dispensaries because the use is prohibited in all zones, but applications will be considered
on a case-by-case basis. They will be considered on a number of factors including their proximity to sensitive areas such as parks and schools. Council last month agreed to instruct staff not to accept any further applications until the ones already submitted have been reviewed.
Ladner Nails & Esthetics HAPPY DIWALI Mayor George V. Harvie and Delta Council extend their best wishes to all those celebrating the Diwali festival of lights. May the glow of joy, prosperity and happiness illuminate your days in the year ahead!

Delta’s free EV charging coming to an end SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s still free, but that will change in the coming months. The City of Delta’s electric vehicle charging stations at civic facilities will soon have a fee for usage, but details still need to be worked out for council approval. Civic staff, as part of 2022 budget discussions with council this fall, are to come up with recommendations for a fee structure.
The stations are currently operating at no cost for EV owners as the stations are funded from facility budgets. “At this time, Deltaowned stations are free for public use with a maximum two-hour usage time. The intention of providing free public charging, on a temporary basis, is to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles,” a staff report earlier this year noted. “However, the stations have the capacity to collect fees
in the future as determined by council. Staff are monitoring usage at Delta’s charging stations and will report back to council with further details and recommendations for a fee structure that aligns with other municipalities in the region, as contemplated by the Electric Vehicle Strategy adopted by council in 2020.” Delta’s Electric Vehicle Strategy identified several actions aimed at enhancing the public charging network.
Delta has already taken a number of steps including the installation of the city’s first publiclyowned charging stations at recreation facilities in 2019, as well as zoning bylaw regulations requiring a percentage of parking stalls in residential buildings to support EV charging. Delta has been operating 10 of its own Level 2 charging stations at public facilities and installation is underway on another 20 stations. The city also applied
for funding to install additional Level 2 stations and a DC Fast Charge station at public facilities. Council also recently endorsed a staff recommendation to apply to the Natural Resources Canada Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program to help fund charging stations for Delta’s municipal fleet. The proposed fleet charging project would include 10 Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations located where
fleet vehicles are parked overnight. Meanwhile, the province has announced new rebates to help fund the purchase and installation of EV chargers in homes and workplaces. The Go Electric EV Charger Rebate program provides a rebate up to 50 per cent of costs, up to a maximum of $2,000, per eligible charger. Single-family homes and townhomes can also apply for a rebate of up to 50 per cent to a maximum of $350.
Delta hoping to secure Ladner flood protection dollars SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta is hoping to land federal dollars to help in long-term flood protection efforts for Ladner Village. Council last week agreed to apply for
BC A
H
a grant from the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund for the design and construction of the Ladner Village Flood Protection Project. The program provides a 40 per cent federal cost share for total eligible project costs and projects are to be completed
by 2032. According to Delta staff, the estimated cost of the Ladner project is about $19 million and includes dike upgrades, Chisholm Street upgrades and local pump station upgrades. The federal cost share would be $7.6 million
and Delta’s share is estimated to be about $11.4 million over 10 years. Applicants are not required to have secured their share of project costs at the time of application. The infrastructure Canada program is a 10-year, $2 billion
national program to support communities with projects to mitigate climate-related risks and natural hazards. Last year, an additional $1,375 billion in federal funding was announced with a spit between “small-scale” projects ranging from $1
million to $20 million and “large-scale” projects over $20 million. If successful, the Ladner project would be brought back to council for approval with confirmation of city funding to be determined in the Delta’s long-term financial plan.

o much for fireworks being illegal in Delta and most of the Lower Mainland. The fallout from a weekend of Halloween revelry continues across local social media pages. Many residents are expressing their distaste for fireworks, the nuisance of the noise and the stress on their pets. Others disagree, saying it is just, good clean fun and because it’s just one or two nights a year, let everyone have their fun. The results of a recent online community poll, where we asked should all municipalities ban fireworks, saw the majority of respondents fall in line with a fireworks ban. Of the 296 people who voted, 57.43 per cent agreed that fireworks are a nuisance and threaten the environment, 24.66 per cent voted no, they are good clean fun once or twice a year and 17.91 per cent voted maybe, but we should try enforcing the existing rules before creating new ones. Police and fire attended plenty of calls for service, with DPD reporting 20 different files for fireworks-related calls. Officers made numerous fireworks seizures throughout the night. Delta Fire reported two fireworksrelated injuries that they attended. Fire Chief Guy McKintuck said fireworks accidents and injuries are avoidable. Enforcing the fireworks ban in Delta is tricky business as it’s relatively easy to purchase them outside of the city and bring them in, acknowledges McKintuck, which is clearly what many folks did. Both the DPD and fire department are continuing to put out messaging informing the public that fireworks, without a permit, are not allowed in the city. So, does the City of Delta need to look at a complete ban on fireworks in the community? And if so, do they have the current resources to enforce such a ban? Clearly, based on social media comments and our online poll, there is a desire in the community for a tougher stance, so what say you city hall?
The border won’t be open until we can travel freely, both ways
F
or so long I was pinning the U.S. border being closed on President Joe Biden. Then, without much warning or fanfare, he opened the land crossing - with no restrictions - as of Nov. 8. Now it’s up to us [Canada] to drop the strict testing requirement to come back to Canada for those fully vaccinate, so we can really get back to normal. Snowbirds no longer need to ship their car across the border and take a short flight to meet up with it. I was speaking with one person who ended up spending more than $1,000 just to have his car available to him in Bellingham to drive south. Seemed a bit ridiculous, fully vaccinated and all. I had been waiting a long time to head south. I had something urgent I needed to take care of, and couldn’t wait until Nov. 8, so I booked a flight and my wife I headed out. That was an adventure itself. First up was an Antigen test 72 hours before the flight. Result – negative. Whew. Then be at the airport three hours before the flight. No big deal, the airport is a nice place

to hang out. Except our flight was at 7 a.m. Once we were in Phoenix, it was like a different world. Hardly a mask to be seen. Most employees wore them, but for the most part, it was back to normal down there. Coming back was a worry, getting tested – the more detailed PCR test is required to come back to Canada – was much easier. We went to a drive-thru pharmacy, performed the test ourselves and were emailed the results. Not the nicest way to spend a Sunday morning, but could have been worse. While I was a bit uncomfortable without everyone wearing masks, there was one incident
when I was glad. Standing in line at a grocery store, I overheard someone saying, ‘Please.’ I turned to see a fellow, mid-thirties, speaking with an older gentleman wearing a Second World War veteran cap. He insisted on paying for the veteran’s groceries, and thanked him for his service. A bit overwhelmed, and to stop making a scene, the vet stopped saying no and allowed the man to leave a $100 bill in his grocery cart. The man also waited to make sure all the groceries were covered. It was a powerful moment, something I’ll never forget, especially as we recognize our own veterans next week. COVID is with us for a long time, we need to manage it. Not allowing fully vaccinated people to travel freely rewards those who don’t get the shot. It’s time to make our border free again, both ways. Isn’t that what our veterans fought for? Letters
More perspectives about Beach Grove Editor: You are correct Mac Savage in your recent letter: ideas and solutions for Beach Grove Golf Club (Optimist, Oct. 28), that the club needs the financial support from this land sale to remain solvent and “a vibrant part of the community.” The concern we should all have is what happens if Beach Grove Golf Course, a non-profit entity, can’t find a solution to their financial issues. What then? Delta buying it for a park isn’t likely with golf balls flying around, and a
GoFundMe site for a private golf course seems unlikely. All over North America, the pressure on urban golf courses for housing is considerable. Ladner, Tsawwassen and Point Roberts have four, 18-hole golf courses and a nine-hole course for 43,000 people. With Beach Grove Golf Course’s financial issues, its location, its land value and the benefit of it already being in an established community, it would be the likely candidate to become housing.
The reality is, when golf courses get into financial trouble, they reorganize. Deltans would be naive or uninformed to think this couldn’t happen here. If Beach Grove Golf Course fails to fix its mortgage problem, we could soon have a public nine-hole course on the clubhouse side, with thousands of townhouses and apartments between 12th Ave. and 16th Ave. Hopefully not a scenario that plays out, but a possibility we should all consider. Massey Tunnel – again, really?
Editor: Re: Paton wants missing info from new tunnel business case (Optimist, online, Oct. 21). It seems one issue MLA Ian Paton is flogging a dead horse over the Massey Tunnel replacement. Why is it that elected officials always perceive themselves as transit experts, while in reality they know little? The Liberals wanted to replace the perfectly good Massey Tunnel with a massive bridge for two
reasons: 1) Political prestige, where large and expensive concrete infrastructure can be used over and over again at election time. 2) BC Liberal political friends in the Harbours Board wanted to deepen the South Arm channel to allow deep draught Cape Max colliers, tankers and massive natural gas tankers to use Surrey Docks. The real issue now is where will the traffic go?
One should consider the “Downs iron law of congestion”; “On urban commuter expressways, peak-hour traffic congestion rises to meet maximum capacity.” In other words, adding lanes won’t cure snarled traffic; the additional car space inevitably invites more trips, until gridlock is as bad as ever. All the new tunnel or bridge will do is turn Highway 99 into a parking lot in Richmond! Malcolm Johnston
Wetlands and habitat cannot withstand these projects
Editor: Re: Will Delta be home to new cruise ship terminal? (Optimist, online article, Oct. 23) So Robin Silvester, CEO Port of Vancouver, now wants to appropriate more Fraser River estuary wildlife habitat for a second cruise ship terminal? The lower Fraser and its estuary are at a tipping point. Over 70 per cent of its natural habitat has already been lost to port and industrial development. There must be no
further industrialization allowed in one of the most important wildlife habitats in Canada. There are multiple port/industrial projects already implemented or being planned, including Deltaport and Westshore terminals, the Airport Jet Fuel terminal, Seaspan barge terminal, a new Massey Tunnel and potentially, unless they are stopped, Fortis LNG, Roberts Bank Container Terminal 2, Deltaport Berth 4 and a second
cruise ship terminal. Enough is enough. The wetlands and wildlife habitat cannot withstand these projects. Millions of shorebirds, waterfowl, salmon, crabs and other wildlife rely on this habitat for their very existence. Mr. Silvester needs to be told: no he is not going to get approval for Roberts Bank Terminal 2 and no he is not going to get a second cruise ship terminal. Roger Emsley

DPD recognizes officers, citizens at awards night
From the heroic efforts by citizens who lifted a car off a trapped man, to complex work to prevent a youth from being sexually exploited – efforts by Delta Police officers and citizens were showcased in a long-awaited awards ceremony after two years on Oct. 28. DPD officers and their families, Police Board members, Delta Police Foundation representatives and guests gathered Thursday at Tsawwassen Springs to celebrate these and other achievements. The event adhered to all COVID protocols. “It was a very moving evening, being able to gather to honour some of the incredible work being done, not just by our officers, but also by our own Delta citizens,” said Chief Neil Dubord. “Many of the awards celebrated work that was literally life-saving or life changing.” One award acknowledged the importance
of the skills officers can bring with them when they join DPD. Const. Steve Vickery came to DPD as a mature recruit, with years of paramedic experience. In September 2020, he answered the call when Emergency Health Services asked for police to assist with an aggressive man. Vickery noted the man seemed extremely confused, with abnormal and slurred speech and had difficulty performing basic tasks, so he told the BC Ambulance crew that the male could be suffering from a brain bleed. The male refused medical assistance, however Vickery was able to apprehend him under the Mental Health Act and he was taken to hospital. The man later contacted Vickery to thank him and share that his diagnosis of an intracranial hemorrhage was correct and he had

take enforcement action but instead is focused on putting supports in place for the victim, or preventing victimization,” said Dubord of two Superintendent Commendations that
were awarded. The first was for officers who successfully intervened with an underage, at-risk victim being sexually exploited, who has now turned her life around. The second acknowledged the work of officers who helped send a 16-year-old being groomed for child exploitation back to her family outside of Canada. “These are investigations that we can’t necessarily share with the community, in order to protect the privacy of those involved, so it’s very meaningful to acknowledge our officers work in this manner,” added Dubord. “Working with at-risk youths and children is incredibly important but also very time consuming, and I want to also acknowledge the partnerships we have with the Delta School District and other social services supports.” DPD only recently welcomed volunteers back
to its Community Police Offices, but one volunteer remained very active during the pandemic. In 2019, the Community Police Offices initiated the “Keep In Touch” program and Mary-Lynn G’froerer volunteered to be the coordinator. This program offers support to seniors living in the community with limited or no family support. Volunteers regularly make phone contact, to check-in on the health and wellness of the participants. Since March of 2020, despite the offices being closed, G’froerer has continued this program on her own. For her extraordinary commitment to the community of Delta, G’froerer was awarded the Delta Police Volunteer of the Year award. South Delta legions hoping for more generosity towards poppy fund DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The small, red flowers of Remembrance are back and currently available both inside businesses and from the trays of legion members and volunteers. Both the Ladner and Tsawwassen legions are hoping to see the South Delta community pull together again for another year of supporting veterans and their families through donating while picking up your poppy. “Last year, the public was so generous – with COVID and knowing our legion was closed three times for COVID. The community of Delta is so incredible, and we just hope that they continue to do that for our veterans,” says Jacky Hillairet,
manager of the Ladner legion. Tap-to-pay boxes will also be an option at higher-traffic locations for an easier, more pandemic-friendly way to donate, with both legions being given two devices each this year. The Ladner legion has specifically said they’ll be accepting card payments with these devices at their legion. They’ll also have black, centre-of-the-poppy shaped pins for sale, which more securely fasten your poppy to your coat or shirt. “Each year, the Royal Canadian Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign, along with thousands of our members who volunteer from coast to coast to raise funds in support of vet-
erans and their families. Poppies are distributed freely, but your generous donations are invaluable,” reads the Royal Canadian Legion’s website. Wearing a poppy during the Remembrance period honours Canada’s fallen soldiers and veterans, and both legions are encouraging everyone to wear a poppy to remember and pay respect to veterans still with us today. Volunteering numbers are spottier than the usual pre-pandemic assistance, and both legions are open to having the public sign up for some time slots as long as they’re willing to follow COVID protocols. “It would be nice to get some help, but the biggest help would be

Hospital Thrift Store holding Christmas Store grand opening this Sunday DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Expect to see Santa Claus and groove along to Christmas tunes in the freshly renovated Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society’s (DHAS) Christmas store this Sunday for their grand opening. Nearly a year after a fire that devastated the operation’s store on Dec. 27, 2020, auxiliary volunteers are delighted to open right on time to create some festive cheer. “For us, the Christmas shop makes huge revenue. It’s a very popular shop, and people look forward to it. They’ve been asking ‘are you going to have a Christmas shop?’, because last year, it was kind of muddled in with some household stuff,” says
Joanna James, the thrift shop’s coordinator. The shop, which will open at 10 a.m. and run to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 for their grand opening, has new floors, counters and shelves and a new coat of paint. “I really want to thank the public for bearing with us through this and our volunteers who have kept the shop going through this time, because we can’t do without the public’s donations, without them coming to buy from us,” says James. The road to reopening was rather perilous, with the pandemic being one of the biggest obstacles the team battled and are still battling against. Not only did it affect how people could shop in the stores, but it

done very well to come back, and for a lot of them, it’s a pleasure to be back with other people and be social and be
making money for the hospital, which is our aim,” says James. Capacity limits, masking, and social distancing
are still in effect at the DHAS thrift shop operation and the volunteers look forward to seeing you there on Sunday.

South Delta to hold private Remembrance Day ceremonies DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
It’s going to be another year of low-key, private Remembrance Day ceremonies in South Delta this year for the Ladner and Tsawwassen legions.
Tsawwassen members will be holding their own ceremony within their legion, says president Ken Harvey, and they won’t be joining the Ladner Legion to march to the cenotaph as they normally would have.

“It’s better than last year because we couldn’t have anything, so this is an improvement, but it is still disappointing,” said Harvey. “Normally we have that big parade from Ladner to Memorial Park where the cenotaph is, and there’s all the Scouts and Sparks – all the little ones ... and this year, of course, we don’t have all those kiddies.” Ladner’s ceremony will be closed to the public again this year. The Legion will be forming a scaled-down parade starting on 48th Ave. and Delta St. that will include a few veterans, their colour party, the Delta Police Pipe Band and some dignitaries. They are discouraging the public from joining them. “We hope people understand that we’re doing this still for everybody’s safety – that’s our main concern, is to keep people safe,” says Jacky Hillairet, manager of the Ladner Legion.

Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord prepares to lay a wreath at the cenotaph in Ladner during the 2020 Remembrance Day ceremony. “It’s all for the veterans, the whole day is about veterans, so as long as we can have a
couple of veterans out there and pay tribute to them, then bring them back [to the Legion] for
some sandwiches and soup and make them feel special, then we’ve done our job,” she adds.

Earthwise workshops jump into the holiday season Halloween might just barely be over, but Earthwise Society is already looking ahead to the next holiday season. This fall, Earthwise encouraged people to get creative with a series of interactive, informative and artistic workshops using the Earthwise Garden as both inspiration and backdrop. This learning series was so popular that Earthwise has decided to continue the workshops into November, this time with a focus on the holidays. The next November workshop, “Herbal Spa Day,” on Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m., will provide participants with everything they could possibly need for a relaxing at-home spa day. Guests will learn how to make relaxing herbal bath salts, bees-

‘For the Love of Art in South Delta’ show back at Harris Barn this weekend DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Prepare to be amazed and dazzled by 28 artists and artisans this weekend, who will be selling their pieces and products at Ladner’s Harris Barn during the third annual For the Love of Art in South Delta. On Nov. 6 and 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., come wander the two floors of the beautiful cedar barn to browse through the many different mediums of art and products available to purchase, no matter what your price range is. “I think it’s going to be really, really good. I think that there will be a lot of people who want to come out, who are, really, kind of thirsty for these experiences again,” says organizer and participat-
ing artist Jan Rankin. With free admission, live music from acoustic guitarist and vocalist Jana Seale and writer, singer and songwriter Sam Wallace, and different door prizes up for grabs, the event is organized to be “elegantly casual.” “It’s so great to have a whole bunch of artists come together, it’s just really exciting and there’s a lot of energy,” said Rankin. “A lot of these artists don’t have any way to show their work, so this is a great time for them ... There’s a couple people who it will be their very first art show ever, and for some people, it’s old hat.” Whether you’re coming out to browse around or are hunting for something in particular, she encourages folks to chat
with the artists, to participate in the scavenger hunt and door prizes and enjoy themselves while being surrounded by brilliant works. The charity supporting mothers and caregivers in crisis, Mamas for Mamas, has been given a table to host their own fundraising activities. Rankin asks that folks wanting to come out please be aware that provincial health protocols are in effect and will be asked at the door to show proof of double vaccination and to wear a mask unless eating at a table inside the venue. Harris Barn is located at 41449 Arthur Dr. in Ladner. For more information check out Rankin’s website at: www.janrankin. com/for-the-love-of-art.

Sidekick will be producing three plays for this 25th season - an all-Canadian mini season opening with Daniel MacIvor’s Marion Bridge, followed by Norm Foster’s Drinking Alone and Jonas and Barry in the Home. In Marion Bridge, three adult sisters have gathered at their childhood home in Nova Scotia to care for their mother in her final days. The three women are a curious, troubled bunch. Agnes (Lisa Gach), whose hand is rarely without a drink, fled their rural Canadian home to make her way as an actor in Toronto. She’s brought her personal theatrics with her on this trip home. Theresa (Alison Main-
Tourneau) is a nun who farms with her convent. A sliver of doubt has entered her life. And then there’s Louise (Cathy Collis), who has all but retreated from adult life in favor of disappearing into the world of soap operas and serials. MacIvor was born in Sydney, N.S. and he lived in Cape Breton, where Marion Bridge is located. When interviewed, MacIvor said his mother asked him to write a play that she would like! Marion Bridge was that play, and Mom liked it a lot. “It’s great to be back rehearsing again,” said Sidekick director, Carroll Lefebvre. “The three women in this play are exceptional. We are all excited to be back in front of an audience and on the stage.” Because Sidekick had to close down their season in March 2020, subscrib-

There won’t be a subscription offer this season, but it will be offered for next season in the spring. Marion Bridge opens Friday, Nov. 12 and runs to Dec. 4. Evening performances will be at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees will be at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Performances will be Thursday to Saturday (evening) and Sundays (matinees). There is limited seating due to COVID-19 regulations, so early reservations are recommended. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors/students. New theatre company debuts show at Genesis Delta Stageworks, a new theatre arts organization that brings together professional actors and community members under the banner ‘Local Theatre That Tells Local Stories’, is set to open their first presentation, Then & Now, Pandemic Life Stories at Genesis Theatre in Ladner. “It has been an amazing, sometimes challenging journey,” says Delta Stageworks co-founder Peg Keenleyside about the year-long series of workshops the company held not knowing when or if PHOs would allow the company to work together. “We interviewed people in our community, adapted news stories, created hybrid scenes with both in-person and online participants, talked to friends, family and reflected on our own lived experiences.” Community members were encouraged to be part of the creative process that involved up to 12 people at a time interacting with each other. “One of the great things about this creative journey has been how cathartic it has proven to be, in dealing with the impact the pandemic has had on our lives, family and

Minister’s Minute
Tempted to judge
ANDREAS BASSON
Li fe C h u rc h
All of us struggle in judging others. We judge someone’s actions or behaviors, whether it’s how they drive, or the clothes they wear. Judgment comes fast and easy. Jesus said, “Do not judge.” (Matthew 7:1-5). Paul says it this way – “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another”- Romans 14:13. Paul is saying that followers of Jesus often have strong opinions and disagree about matters of preference. There are many opinion-based matters that we easily judge, whether it’s politics, social issues, or how to respond to the COVID19 pandemic. There is growing conflict in the church regarding COVID-19 as well. Some are happy with simply following the
orders from the health authorities and some are not. Some applaud the use of masks while others despise those who do. Some judge others on the mask issue as being either soft or reckless. Let me encourage you to choose kindness and grace and refuse to judge one another. I want to share what I personally experienced while having COVID. To be honest, this is the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life, and almost didn’t make it. While being bedridden, I received text messages from my friends and family. Thank you for the love. Here is what caught me offguard. The judgment I experienced from some. Before asking how I was doing, they promptly needed to know whether I am vaccinated or not. The saddest part is this, dependent on how
I answered determined their response of either compassion or judgment. It’s almost like my vaccine status determined whether they wanted me to get better, whether they would still love and accept me. It’s almost like some felt I deserved being that sick as they assumed I was unvaccinated. COVID kills people - a person almost died... I almost died. Vaccine status should not determine our love or our compassion for people. Our first question should not be about their vaccine status but should be: How are you doing? How can I help you? Can I pray for you and your family? Let us not judge others because their decisions might be different than ours. Let our first question and action show love not judgement. Let us as a community serve and help all of those in need.
A Warm and Joyful welcome to...

Budget-friendly dining room renovation ideas
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then the dining room may be akin to one of its arteries. The mood created in the kitchen spreads to the dining space where family and friends gather to eat and enjoy one another’s company. Dining rooms can get lost in the home renovation shuffle, as many homeowners tend to focus on renovating kitchens and bathrooms instead. Homeowners do not have to invest a lot of money in renovations to give their dining spaces awe-inspiring makeovers. Here’s how to do so on a budget. Lighten and brighten. Dining rooms were once very formal spaces. Dark woods, large pieces of furniture, over-the-top chandeliers, and other details could be found in many homes. But now
that houses are being built with open floor plans, dining rooms can blend with other spaces, which have moved to lighter colored walls, flooring and furniture. A fresh coat of vibrant paint can work wonders and it doesn’t cost much. If you can’t remove a floor, cover it with a brightly colored area rug. Switch things up with slipcovers. Slipcovers can be changed each season to dramatically alter the look of a dining room for little investment. Slip covers also protect chairs and can be easily laundered after spills. Add floating shelving. Floating shelves provide much-needed storage or display space without the need to invest in another piece of furniture. Depending on the shelving, they can work in modern design schemes

and china cabinets used to be de rigueur, but plenty of people now prefer more open and airy dining rooms. For those who want to keep the cabinet, try decluttering
inside to only include the very best display pieces and see if the cabinet can be refinished with paint or a lightly colored stain. Improve lighting. Make the chandelier the state-
ment piece of the space. Go for a bold color or an innovative design. Then add accessories throughout the space that coordinate with the chandelier. Add bench seating. Those who need additional seating may not have to get entirely new furniture. Swap out some chairs for benches, which can fit a couple more guests than chairs. Create depth with color. HGTV says that using various shades of the same color in a space can add depth. Coordinate drapes, walls, seat fabrics, and accessories for a cohesive design. Renovating a dining room doesn’t require a large investment of time and money. A few simple steps can give dining spaces a whole new feel without busting homeowners’ budgets. -Metro Creative

not up to the task of handling the workload and could be out of date. A kitchen remodel will assess wiring load needs and an electric overhaul may be necessary. Lack of storage: One of the biggest hassles homeowners encounter in their kitchens is a lack of storage space. If making a meal involves a Jenga-like stacking and rearranging of kitchen tools, or if an avalanche occurs whenever you search for an item, you might need more storage. A carefully planned redesign can achieve this, even in a smaller kitchen. Outdated appliances: Even if your appliances are not avocado green or mustard yellow relics of the 1970s, they might still need to be replaced. Family is expanding (or shrinking): Kitchens often are the heart of a home. They need to meet

Remodeling a kitchen adds value to a home. Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value Report” indicates mid-range kitchen remodels cost about $66,000, and homeowners can expect to recover about 60 to 80 percent of that cost at resale. Homeowners may wonder if remodeling their kitchens is worth the investment. But homeowners should not just consider cost, but also the current conditions of their kitchens when deciding if a renovation project is the right move to make. These signs indicate it may be time to renovate a kitchen. Breakers are triggered: If the lights go dark from a tripped circuit breaker every time you try to microwave and run the toaster oven at the same time, your wiring is likely

Must-haves to achieve a holiday wonderland The end of the year marks a period of heightened festivity. Come the holiday season, homes and businesses are decorated and everyone seems to have an extra spring in their step. The sight of snowflakes, candy canes, evergreen wreaths and Christmas trees can elicit nostalgia for happy holidays of the past, as well as excitement for what is yet to come. When it comes to decorating for the holidays, there are certain items that set the scene. Christmas trees: Germany is credited with starting the modern Christmas tree tradition. It dates back to the 16th century when devout Christians brought trees into their homes and decorated them. German settlers brought Christmas tree traditions
to America upon their arrival in Pennsylvania in the 19th century. Mistletoe: Mistletoe is known as the “kissing plant” and it is customary for couples to kiss while standing beneath the plant, typically hung in doorways and arches. Mistletoe was once hung to drive off evil spirts and ensure fertility. Kissing under the mistletoe was first found associated with the Greek festival of Saturnalia and later with primitive marriage rites. Lights: Lights are commonly seen during the holiday season. The custom of having holiday lights dates back to when Christmas trees were decorated with candles, which symbolized Christ being the light of the world. These traditions evolved from pagan rituals that would celebrate the return of light of the

He became enamored with the plants, and brought them back to his native South Carolina. An old Mexican legend suggests a poor girl had nothing to offer baby Jesus at Christmas Eve services, so she picked a handful of weeds and put them at the bottom of the nativity scene. Russell Howlett Howlett fired rounds of 66-71 at the Squamish Valley Golf Club to finish in a tie for top spot with Ethan Banks. He would go on to lose in a playoff to his University of Calgary counterpart. Coming off his first university victory last month at the Cascade Invitational in Chilliwack, Howlett continued his stellar play with a sizzling 6-under opening round score that included four birdies on the front nine. He opened his second round Tuesday with an eagle on the par-5 first hole before a pair of bogeys on 14 and 15 led to a playoff. The team competition was no contest as the Thunderbirds cruised to a 23-stroke victory.

COFLIN, Patricia Ann March 31, 1933 - Edmonton, Alberta October 28, 2021 - Tsawwassen, B.C.
Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
HOOD, John Francis Alexander (Sandy) December 8, 1935 - October 26, 2021 Sandy passed unexpectedly at St. Paul’s Hospital, in his 86th year. Predeceased by his wife Barb, he will be missed by his daughters Val (Paul) and Christy (Mark), along with his grandchildren; Rowan (Jan), Solveig, Anna, and Sarah. Sandy was born in Victoria, raised his family in Ladner, and retired to Sechelt. His career in banking spanned nearly 40 years. Sandy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life; gardening, music, reading, the cocktail hour, his dogs, and most of all, his family and friends. By request, there will be no service. Flowers gratefully declined in favour of donations in his memory to: the Music Therapy Program at BC Children’s Hospital (bcchf.ca/donate), or the BC Cancer Foundation (donate.bccancerfoundation.com). REID, Rosemary (Marie) (nee Bowden Fitchett) August 25, 1925 - October 2, 2021 Predeceased by her husband Ronald (Doug) Reid, Marie leaves behind her children Candy Mills (Denis), and Ric (Kelly), and her grandchildren Shawn (Rhonda), Ryan (Shannon), Tyler (Katrina), Aidan, Kalan, and great grandchildren, Brandon and Mariah. Marie was an inspiring presence to all. Employed in the Mail Order Department at Simpson Sears, she trained the men who were promoted to leading positions. Fiercely protective of the young women in her department, she kept their bosses in line. She was an entrepreneur, starting her own successful bookkeeping business in Ladner and Tsawwassen. Marie was an advocate for the RCSCC Bicknell Cadet Corps, of which her husband, Doug, was one of the founders. Marie and Doug were compassionate people. They were supporters of many charities including The March of Dimes. They were known for their open door policy for family and friends who needed a meal, a bed, or an interim home, a philosophy passed along by her parents. Always curious, and fiercely independent, when she purchased her first computer she programmed it herself. She was so very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were a constant source of gratification and laughter.

NOE, Paul Henry 1941 - 2021
My, how she could laugh. Her voice is silent now, but she leaves our hearts full of Love.
Paul passed away peacefully on Friday, October 22, 2021 after a battle with cancer and pneumonia. Paul celebrated his 80th birthday on August 6 of this year with friends and family.
A private gathering is planned and in lieu of flowers, we would be grateful if you made a donation to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Paul was born in Ingersoll, Ontario to Irene (Tait) Noe and Earl Noe (predeceased) and is survived by his wife Connie and children Kevin (Lisa), Jay (Kathie), Sandra (Michael) and Tamara (Al) and grandchildren Tyler, Tanya, Daniel, Meaghan, Danya, Tyler, Heather, Sean, and many great grandchildren. Also survived by his siblings Myra Shier (Larry), Judy Johnson (Bob), David (Lynda), Debbie O’Brien (Dennis), and Christopher (Christine) as well as several nieces and nephews. Paul worked for London Life from 1962 to 1998. He was an active Lions member, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a 22-year volunteer with the Ladner Community Police Office. He enjoyed going on cruises around the world with his beloved wife Connie and spending time with his grandchildren at their cabin in Point Roberts, WA. Paul was very generous to many children’s charities.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Patricia Coflin, beloved wife to Hugh Coflin, of Tsawwassen, B.C., died peacefully in her sleep on October 28, 2021, at the age of 88 years after a long life filled with kindness, faith, and love. Pat was born in Edmonton, Alberta the youngest daughter of four children to Eugene and Pauline Barry. Pat loved her summers at Alberta Beach enjoying the time with her family swimming, sailing, and boating. Her love of the beach and water continued to Wabamun Lake and finally to the Vancouver area where she could often be found sailing, boating, golfing, or birdwatching on a beautiful day. As a young woman, Pat graduated as a Registered X-Ray Technician and worked at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. While in Edmonton, Pat met her soulmate, the handsome Hugh Coflin, who she remained deeply in love with for over 65 years. With their devout faith in God together they raised a beautiful family. Pat devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. She found great joy in supporting them in their academics, passions for sports, and life.
Pat was an expert at logistics, often juggling multiple sporting events, music lessons, and the odd trip to the emergency department for stitches or broken bones. With a seemingly effortless maternal nature, she cared for all, dispensing immense love and support. She was deeply proud of her children’s accomplishments. Pat was adventurous and travelled the world. Together with Hugh, their favorite place was Maui where they spent time with family enjoying the natural beauty and culture. Pat loved the ocean, picnics and long walks on the beach with Hugh. Patricia will be remembered for her radiant, natural beauty and role as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Patricia’s memory will forever live on in the hearts and lives of her children, grandchildren, and her loving late husband, Hugh. All those who were lucky enough to love and be loved by Patricia attest that she will be missed beyond measure. While it is with heavy hearts that we must say goodbye, all those left behind by Patricia are comforted to know that she has once again been reunited with her soulmate and husband, Hugh, for their eternal love to continue to flourish in Heaven. REMEMBRANCES
OBITUARIES
ROWLANDS, Martin July 2, 1964 - August 20, 2021
WORTH, Ronald 1935 - 2021
You never said I am leaving, you never said goodbye. A million times I needed you, a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would of died. Missing you is a heartache that never goes away.
It is with great sadness that the family of Ron Worth announce his passing due to pneumonia and complications of his battle with cancer. With his loving wife of 28 years, Diane, by his side he passed on Monday, October 25 at the Oliver General Hospital just 10 days shy of his 86th birthday.
Martin loved being in the reserves 12 Battalion working in Maintenance. He and Nigel had a lot of fun and games being in the Reserves together.
Born on November 4, 1935 in Penticton, Ron grew up in Okanagan Falls and graduated from South Okanagan Senior Secondary. He joined the Canadian Air Force out of high school and went on to a 32 year career with IBM in various parts of Canada. Upon his retirement from IBM Ron became a realtor, eventually returning to OK Falls and Oliver as co-owner of the Royal Lepage office. He was active in Rotary, serving 2 terms as President, a huge supporter of Air Cadets and a champion of many local charitable causes.
He loved anything to do with wars and the military. Maybe because of all the stories he was told from his family in Wales and our parents living through the war. He also enjoyed watching Japanese anime movies. In his younger years he and his friends would play Fox and Hound with CB radios all around Tsawwassen.
Martin really stepped up to the plate when my mom needed it, and I don’t think he ever thought he would do some of the things he did for her. He loved Nigel Carter like a brother, and cherished their friendship. Martin will be dearly missed by his sister Linda, nieces Kerry and Serena, second family, Nigel, Jane, James and Emma, and all his family in Wales.
SCHMIDT, Joy (nee Bickford) Joy Schmidt (nee Bickford) passed away suddenly at the age of 88 on October 24, 2021 after too long of a battle with Alzheimer’s. Predeceased by husband Bill (married 52 years) and also by her brother Ronald (Agnes). Survived by her children Sharon (Mark), Betsy (Lloyd), Susan (Mark), John (Leanne), Richard (Christine), also survived by her brother Bill (Heather) and her eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Joy was a grade school teacher in her early life and was known throughout her life for her insatiable curiosity, fiery will and abiding love for her family. Together Joy and Bill loved to travel far and wide, play bridge, golf, curl, dance and garden. The family would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to the caring staff at St. Augustine’s House and Delta view. A celebration of life will be held in the spring. Online condolences can be made at deltafuneral.ca

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
PUZZLE ANSWERS ON SEPARATE PAGE
Starting in 1997, Ron and Diane shared their love of Vaseux Lake with the world when they opened “Worth’s on The Water” bed and breakfast. They played host to many wonderful people from all parts of the world and continued operating it until Covid and Ron’s failing health forced the closure. A warm and kind person Ron was loved by many. He was always ready to share a story of Okanagan Falls early days with anyone; particularly over a glass of good red wine! Ron loved to sing and to sit by the fireplace with a cup of tea. Ron is survived by his wife Diane, his son Colin (Leslie) Worth, daughter Jan Worth, grandsons Colby and Rhett Trueman, ex-wife Ann (Bomford) Cramer, his sister Barb Draper of Kelowna, and brother Tom (Linda) Worth of Mill Bay. He leaves behind 10 step-grandchildren Ryanne, Lauren, Jay, Caden, Ruby, Ty, Olivia, Sydney, Sophie and Luke as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ron was pre-deceased by his parents Mona and Tom Worth, and brothers-in-law Norm Draper and Frank Denutte. A family Service was held on Saturday, October 30, at St. Barbara’s Anglican Church in OK Falls. Condolences and memories may be shared by visiting www.everdenrust.com

Have you noticed? Christmas lights are already appearing around town. These are the diehard ‘lovers of light’ or lovers of Christmas - but this does not speak to the people that do not like Christmas, do not celebrate it or... those who get depressed at this time of the year. Let me know what you think of Christmas (nothing offensive; 150 words max.) and I will share the common themes in the next issue. Email me at: fullylived@yahoo.com. Love and Peace.
