Property values in the City of Delta have continued to climb during the pandemic, and according to BC Assessment’s 2022 data, the value of a typical single-family home has now surpassed the million-dollar mark at $1,285,000. But it’s not only Delta homes that grew in value, as all of the Lower Mainland – and more widely, all of the province – trended upward. “The widely reported heighted demand among homebuyers during the COVID-19 pandemic is reflected in the upward movement of property values across the province, including 10 to 30 per cent increases throughout the Lower Mainland,” said BC

6 7887

Assessment Deputy Assessor Bryan Murao in a news release. With more than 1,076,600 property assessments done in the Lower Mainland alone, property-owners are expected to receive their individual assessment notices this week, which are based off of July 2021’s market values. The City of Delta’s typical single-family home assessed value has grown by 33 per cent – an increase 5.5 times larger than the six per cent increase observed between 2020’s and 2021’s assessments – but this doesn’t necessarily mean that we are all doomed for a steep increase in property taxes, said Murao. “A common misconception is that a significant change in your assessed value will

1 1 694

result in a proportionately significant change in your property taxes. The most important factor is not how much your assessed value has changed, but how your assessed value has changed relative to the average change for your property class in your municipality or taxing jurisdiction,” he said. The assessed value of strata residential properties – like condos and townhouses – also increased this year in Delta, with a 13 per cent increase between the 2021 and 2022 assessment. For 2022, their typical assessed value sits at $625,000. “For the Lower Mainland region, the overall total assessments have increased from about $1.46 trillion in 2021 to about $1.75 trillion this year. Delta K-12 students returning to school on Monday with enhanced safety measures Staff returned this week to prepare and implement plans DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Following Provincial Medical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s order for an extra week of holiday break, Delta students will soon be headed back to in-person learning on Monday with additional public health measures in place. School staff and administrators were required to return to school this week, however, to “adapt to the impacts of the Omicron variant on communities and schools, and to implement enhanced safety plans to support the continuation of inclass learning,” reads the Dec. 29 news release from the Ministries of Health and Education. An additional layer of measures, starting Jan. 10, will be added to the existing safety measures of mask-wearing, maximizing space between people and doing daily health checks. These increased measures include preventing crowding during class transition times, holding

school gatherings virtually or at half-capacity, limiting school visitors and pausing extracurricular sports tournaments. Staff-only gatherings will also be required to run virtually whenever possible, as well. During a media briefing on Tuesday, Jan. 4, Henry said that keeping schools open remains their highest priority and confirmed students would be returning to school on Monday. “I have tasked schools specifically to take stock and prepare plans to safely operate over the coming months with the potential for reduced staff and keeping children safe in school,” she said. Delta School District Superintendent Doug Sheppard sent a letter to parents on Jan. 4 with health and safety directions and details on mask-wearing, the importance of vaccinating children aged five to 11 against COVID-19 and doing daily healthchecks with your child. “We look forward to welcoming your chil-

Thank you for your continued efforts in keeping each other physically safe, and for your ongoing support and understanding as we continue to navigate this pandemic,” he wrote. Sheppard added the district anticipates receiving further guidance from the Ministry of Education later this

week, and that they will share any further information with parents as soon as they can. The delayed-return to school was first announced during a press briefing on Dec. 29 with Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside and Henry. “The guidelines build on existing protocols that have succeeded in mini-

mizing the spread of the virus in schools, such as: encouraging everyone who is eligible to get fully vaccinated, using available space to spread out and respect personal space, wearing masks ... cleaning hands regularly, cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces at least once a day,” reads the Ministries’ Dec. 29 news release.

Over $23.7 billion of the region’s updated assessments is from new construction, subdivisions and the rezoning of properties,” reads BC Assessment’s website. Their Lower Mainland region includes all of Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, as well as the Sea to Sky area and the Sunshine Coast.

BC Assessment develops and maintains property assessments throughout the province in addition to providing property information. They produce “assessment information annually to provide tax authorities with a tax base and other information collected about property.” A home in Tsawwassen, two in East Ladner and another in

In a public survey conducted in 2021 by Delta Police, respondents said they thought the DPD had improved in what they considered areas of top importance, compared to a survey from 2018. The survey was conducted between January and June 2021, and was marketed through DPD social media and newspaper advertising. An external company designed the survey and analysed the results and the survey has a margin of error of 6.69 per cent. “I think the results show how dedicated our police officers and police staff are, and also reflect the high quality of the work that’s being done,” says Chief Neil Dubord. “I’m proud of the way our people listen to the community’s concerns. Many here in the DPD also live in Delta, and I think that contributes to the obvious commitment.” Both the 2018 and 2021 surveys asked respondents what issues were most important to them, as well as how they felt DPD was performing in addressing those concerns. In the 2021 survey, violent crime took top

ranking, likely driven in part by the ongoing gang conflict and May 1 homicide in Delta. The results in part: Violent Crime – 84 per cent felt DPD is doing a good/very good job, up from 66 per cent in 2018. Visible Policing – 64 per cent felt DPD is doing a good/very good job, up from 47 per cent in 2018 Property Crime – 66 per cent felt DPD is doing a good/very good job, up from 59 per cent in 2018 All three were rated in the top five priorities by the public. In all the survey asked residents and those who work in Delta about 12 key factors. “The public rated us as improved in 10 out of the 12 areas, and we also saw a reduction in the gap between people’s expectations and what they felt was the reality of policing here,” added Dubord. Another area that saw significant improvement was in theft from vehicles. Eighty per cent of respondents felt police were doing a good job, compared to 48 per cent in 2018. “We know that’s been a big priority for the public, and we continue to priori-

tize this issue, including keeping tabs on custody status of prolific offenders, information sharing with Metro Vancouver police departments, even undercover work when that tactic is deemed suitable,” said Dubord. The survey was also important to the DPD in providing direction on the areas that the public deems important. According to the survey results, the public feels the biggest future impacts on policing are: Internet scams with 79 per cent of respondents feel pose the greatest impact. A growing population was flagged by 74 per cent of those surveyed Organized crime was a concern of 73 per cent Rounding out the top concerns, 70 per cent were concerned about the ongoing impact of the pandemic. “Overall, Delta residents showed no significant change in the importance of the 12 key police services, and, more noteworthy during a pandemic year, residents rated the performance of police as better than in 2018,” Dubord said.

Late fines ending at all FVRL locations Fraser Valley Regional Library is ending late fines permanently as of Jan. 1. Throughout the pandemic, no late fines have incurred and as of Dec. 8, 2021 the 15 elected officials who compose the FVRL board voted to continue this initiative indefinitely. The ending of late fines is part of FVRL’s approach to continue to help remove barriers for customers and encourage increased use and access to the collection. “We know how helpful and potentially life-changing removing late fines can be. This was a well-thought-out

decision that has a big impact on supporting people, creating harmony, and building stronger communities,” said FVRL board chair Gayle Martin. This change does not include fees incurred for lost or damaged materials. The same fee structure will still apply. Customers with existing fines will be granted the option of removing some or all of these fines with an upcoming 2022 forgiveness campaign. “We recognize that many people are struggling right now and finances are tight. We care and we want to help,” added FVRL CEO

Scott Hargrove. “There can be a lot of fear or stress surrounding late fines. Most of the time we see customers accrue late fines unintentionally – missed bus, sick kid, working late. This minor mishap can seriously hurt household budgets, use of the library, and stress levels. We want to welcome people into the library and help alleviate some pressure.” To learn more about FVRL’s services, collection, hours of operation, FVRL Express, eCard sign up, virtual programs and digital content, please visit www. fvrl.ca or call your local library.

Delta aimingtohelp those in poverty City conducting survey of residents to identify various issues SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta- optimist .com

The City of Delta is undertaking a poverty needs assessment in advance of developing a new Poverty Reduction Action Plan. In partnership with LevelUp Planning Collaborative, the assessment includes a survey of Delta residents now underway to identify various issues. Last year, City council agreed to submit an application to the province’s Poverty Reduction Planning and Action Program for funding to develop a poverty reduction plan. It’s to identify community needs and actions that directly support

vulnerable populations and low-income residents, including actions to increase food security in Delta. A 2021 Delta staff report notes food insecurity is directly related to income in that the lower the household or individual income, the higher the risk of food insecurity. The Delta poverty reduction strategy is to help the city consolidate poverty reduction work that has already been undertaken by various departments, conduct a comprehensive examination of community needs, as well as develop and expand community partnerships. It’s also aimed at identifying actions and proj-

ects that directly support vulnerable populations and low-income residents, including actions to increase food security in Delta, the report explains. “Food emergency services, such as food banks, are under-utilized in Delta while Delta families with children face higher food insecurity, as reported by Delta School District. Developing a better understanding of the underlying factors contributing to increased food insecurity for vulnerable populations will require continuous collaboration between the City and community partners,” the report states. “Food security policies fall within all gov-

ernment jurisdictions and policies to address food insecurity require a collective, coordinated approach. Local governments are wellpositioned to address food related issues relating to land use, utilities, community services, and supports to vulnerable populations,” the report notes. The report adds that city staff’s initial examination of food programs showed that Delta has “robust community-driven food programming infrastructure” including food banks, emergency food programs, free/low cost community meals, multiple programs with free food/meals, community kitchens and community gardens.

The Delta school district also provides various food supports to students and their families. According to the released draft of Delta’s Social Action Plan, in 2020, on average, the South Delta Food Bank served 80-100 clients a month. The North Delta Food Depot served 25-to-40 clients a month. In addition, between 150 and 200 Delta residents access the Surrey Food Bank on a monthly basis. That report notes recent immigrants, children and youth, and seniors in low-income households are at higher risk of being food insecure. Delta-specific data

suggests that this is also the case for Delta, with North Delta having the highest proportion of Delta’s children and seniors living in poverty. Delta has a significantly smaller proportion of low-income residents than that of Metro Vancouver, however, since 2010, the proportion of Delta’s immigrants with low income has increased, the draft action plan added. In 2015, while the average income of Delta’s labour force was $49,483, recent immigrants to Delta made less than half of that ($23,424). For more information about the survey, contact project manager, Lavleen Sahota at lavleen@levelupplanning.ca.

Trying to reduce mobility and accessibility challenges in Delta SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta should try to enhance physical accessibility through the built environment and support social inclusion through the elimination of barriers for people with different abilities in Delta. That’s one of the lengthy list of objectives identified in the recently released draft of the city’s new Social Action Plan. The report notes that potential actions for the city to undertake include developing a City Accessibility Plan to identify, prevent and remove barriers that may affect people with different abilities from participating fully in their day-to-day activities in Delta. The report also notes that among the ongoing actions underway is a comprehensive accessibility audit of city-

owned facilities with a focus on universal design improvements. The city is to also continue applying an accessibility lens when developing, delivering, seeking input on and promoting city services that accommodate different abilities, as well as for planning processes, including updating the City’s Official Community Plan. Meeting for the first time earlier this year, Delta’s new Mobility and Accessibility Committee was formed to provide advice to city staff on new and existing city infrastructure and programs to support mobility and accessibility throughout the city. The group includes representation from several municipal departments, six members who live in Delta and experience mobility or accessibility challenges as well two expert representatives.

FILE PHOTO

The city has also been posting reminders that there are still accessibility barriers people with disabilities and mobility challenges face in the community, asking residents, ‘Be mindful of how your actions may hinder accessibility and avoid parking in accessible spaces if you do not require one.’ The committee has been providing input on developments, capital projects with potential mobility and accessibility impacts, as well as opportunities to improve existing infrastructure and programs to meet the needs of

people with disabilities. The action plan notes that various accessibility challenges have been identified in Delta by the committee and other community members. One of the recommendations from the committee already

approved by council this year is a bylaw amendment to increase the accessibility of parking by adding requirements for van accessible parking where accessible parking is required. Other improvements include the city looking to upgrade the bus stop at 53A Street and 12 Avenue by adding accessible landings. Meanwhile, B.C.’s Accessible British Columbia Act became law in June 2021. The provincial government recently announced it has appointed 11 British Columbians as the first members of the Provincial Accessibility Committee, the next step in government’s work to remove barriers for people with disabilities in B.C. Under the Accessible British Columbia Act, the committee’s work will include advising government on the

implementation of the act, helping government prioritize accessibility standards and overseeing the process of developing standards in areas such as employment, education, transportation and customer service, the province explained. The Mobility and Accessibility Committee met last month heard a presentation from provincial officials about the accessibility act. Council agreed to create the committee last year after a request by Delta resident Vincent Miele, an advocate for the disabled, who said that while it’s good that the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism was created, nowhere was there specific mention about the ongoing erosion of access and discrimination of persons with disabilities through abuse or ignoring the Building Code.

appy New Year! Welcome to 2022! We here at the Optimist have a lot to be thankful for and 100 reasons to celebrate in 2022. It was March 23rd, 1922 that the first edition of the Delta Optimist newspaper was published. In 2022, the Optimist will celebrate its 100th anniversary. This is a significant milestone for many reasons. In this day and age, there are not that many businesses that can boast they have been around for 100 years. In the newspaper business, even less can say that, so for the Optimist to mark this occasion, well, it’s a pretty big deal. To kick off our year of celebration, we have partnered with the Delta Heritage Society and the Delta Archives to present 100 years of images and stories. This special feature will be anchored to our editorial page (page 8) in print every week for the whole year. You can see the first installment in today’s edition. Throughout the rest of the year, we will be presenting other stories, images and memories in print and on our website to mark our anniversary. This look back at the history of the Optimist will culminate in a special commemorative section that will be published in September. We have some other plans in the works to help honour our past and those details will be released in the coming weeks and months. And we will be looking to you, our dedicated readers and advertisers for your memories, stories and photos for our commemorative edition, so keep an eye out for announcements as well. Lastly, I want to thank the community, past, present and future for the amazing support that has been shown to the staff here at the Optimist for the past 100 years. Without that support, we could never have achieved this milestone.

Ice skating on Fraser River, between 1926 and 1931 This photograph depicts people skating and playing ice hockey on the frozen Fraser River near the Brackman & Ker (B & K) warehouse in Ladner Harbour. A paddlewheel boat is frozen in at the government wharf in the background. Though not common, the Fraser River had a history of freezing or partially freezing in the past. More common was the freezing of local sloughs which provided opportunities for recreational skating and ice sports before Delta obtained an ice arena. Delta Archives: 1984-068-010

Christmas vacation in the Omicron era BRAD SHERWIN

Community columnist

Last Christmas, I chose to stay home, while it seems others defied the recommendations and travelled. This Christmas I thought was going to be different, so I planned a trip south. At the last minute, I found myself questioning that plan, but went ahead with it anyways. What an adventure it was. Just a few days before we left, the federal government suggested against it. It was the day we were buying our travel insurance, so we also picked up COVID insurance. Not cheap, but peace of mind if anything happened. We left the day after

the 72-hour exemption ended, Dec. 21, travelled to Las Vegas and drove to Phoenix. Pulling up to the Blaine crossing at 6:30 a.m., we were the only car there. I doubt I’ll ever see that again. The flight was uneventful, the drive afterwards was spectacular. Past the Hoover Dam, through the Joshua Tree forest until the Suharto cacti dotted the landscape. Once there, we were staying at a family home, so we could keep to ourselves for the most part. The occasional outing involved a trip to Costco, Walmart or Home Depot. We wore our masks, the staff wore their masks, but not many other people

did. Good thing I got that insurance! My daughter is a big football fan, so we took in an NFL game. 65,000 fans in the stadium with the roof closed, hardly a mask in sight. Oh boy… We stopped by a local pharmacy for our PCR test, two days in advance of our trip home. We spent the last couple days in Vegas, stayed outside, avoided crowded casinos, and waited for the test results to prepare to come home. Mine came in, negative. My wife’s arrived, negative. My son’s? Not yet. I was worried about getting an invalid result, so I had to start planning for a quick test the morning we flew back. The

result came back at midnight, negative. Another problem dodged. Then, there were all the flight cancellations. Please, please don’t cancel my flight, there weren’t any rooms available on New Year’s Eve in Vegas. Check-in complete, we’re good. The car was buried in snow so the solar charger wasn’t that effective, but it started and we were off to the border. COVID test? Check. Arrive Can? Check. You were in Vegas? Here’s your arrival test, get it done in 24 hours or you’ll be in trouble. Not so worried about what I was bringing home. A Christmas I’ll never forget, and hope to never experience again!

Opinion/Letters

Working for you for a better 2022 With a new year upon us, it’s time to put 2021 behind us and focus on the good that we can do in 2022. It’s no easy task. Most of us had assumed the COVID-19 pandemic would be a thing of the past, but the Omicron variant has left us feeling like we’re back at square one. We saw wildfires, floods and slides that caused catastrophic damage to homes, farms, ranches and infrastructure, and an intense heat dome that claimed 600 lives. While it’s understandable to feel defeated, we must do our best to stay positive and drive change in our communities. Throughout the worst disasters and circumstances of 2021, we saw the very best in people emerge. We saw neighbours helping neighbours to stave off fires and floods, get people and animals to safety, and provide each other with necessities like food, clothing and shelter. I was proud to see our agricultural community come together to make numerous hay deliveries to wildfire-affected communities in the Interior. Local growers also donated an incredible amount

of potatoes to our local food bank. I was pleased to help facilitate these offerings and I want to recognize everyone involved for their donations of hay, potatoes, trucking and equipment. This highlights an important ongoing priority of mine, and that is local food security. Many individuals, families and small businesses are still reeling from the impacts of the pandemic and local flood damage. It’s imperative that we continue to assist them beyond the holiday season. I will also be working hard in 2022 to advocate for the needs of local farmers with damaged crops and homes as a result of the heat dome and flooding. They need significant financial support, but are facing unacceptable delays from the NDP government. Existing disaster financial assistance is nowhere near enough to cover crop losses and damage to homes and farm equipment. Farmers remain confused about what sort of additional resources or financial compensation they will be eligible for, to help them recover from their tremendous losses. The

Province and the federal government need to bring forward a recovery package much faster, to provide these farmers with the support and reassurance they need right now. Both levels of government also need to take dike upgrades more seriously and provide routine funding for maintenance and flood protection. Better coordination on the ground and improved use of local knowledge is also key. I will also continue to press the government to make good on its promises to improve affordability, build more affordable housing, and address the ongoing opioid crisis, which continues to claim far too many lives. So far, the government’s record on these files has been dismal and that has to change. If you have an issue of concern you’d like addressed, please visit me or my constituency staff at our office at 4805 Delta Street. You can also call us at 604-940-7930 or email Ian.Paton.MLA@ leg.bc.ca. I wish all of my constituents a safe and happy new year. Ian Paton MLA for Delta South

Editor: I just thought I should bring attention to “Boss Matt” at the Boys and Girls Club Wintemute here in Ladner. After 11 years as a staple at the Boys and Girls Club, Matt has made the decision to move on. Matt will still be helping kids here in Delta, which if you know him, we are incredibly lucky to still have him in our com-

munity. I for one am so incredibly grateful for Matt at the Boys and Girls Club as I know hundreds of other parents are. Without “Boss Matt’s” help throughout the years countless families would be in such a worse spot. He has helped so many families in so many ways words cannot describe. His help to my family is

completely immeasurable. I have seen him mentor so many young kids while volunteering or working at the club to go onto be pillars of their communities. He is a remarkable leader. I am honoured to have met “Boss Matt” and am personally so grateful for him being a part of my community. Jeremy Franta

NOTICE OF PROPOSAL TO DISCHARGE A LAND USE CONTRACT

SUBJECT: LAND USE CONTRACT DISCHARGE BYLAW NO. 8084 FOR 11243 89A AVENUE (File No. LU009228) PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that at the Regular Meeting of Council to take place on MONDAY, JANUARY 10, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. in the Theatre at the North Delta Centre for the Arts at 11425 84 Avenue, Delta, BC, the Delta City Council will consider third reading of “Delta (Chhoker – LU009228) Land Use Contract Discharge Bylaw No. 8084, 2021” which relates to the property at 11243 89A Avenue, as shown outlined in bold and marked “Subject Property” on the attached map. Some members of Council may participate in this meeting via electronic means (audio, visual or other communication facilities).

Editor: My son collects recycling in the Ladner/ Tsawwassen/North Delta area. These guys work their tails off all year round from 35 degrees in the summer heat to -15 in the ice, rain and wind in the winter picking up from over 1,200 houses a day. Christmas time is a highlight for them as they

receive many tips like cash, gift cards, chocolates and beer. Recently in Tsawwassen, hundreds of dollars were stolen from him on one day alone (not the first time this has happened) as an older man was seen stopping along the route in the dark hours of the morning removing these envelopes that the kind people leave for them on

the top of their recycling. The workers and the police know who this person is and when approached his reply was, “What’s out on the curb is free for the taking.” One cannot sink much lower than that! For the folks who are kind enough to leave out a gift for these guys next year please give it to them in person. Andrew Luymes

Shocked by ancient views on cannabis

Editor: Re: Ivor Hewitt’s letter, Optimist, Dec. 16 I am shocked to see that people still have ancient views of cannabis and its use. Are we not past the Reefer Madness era of propaganda and lies about cannabis use? South Delta produces a staggering amount of cannabis for the Lower Mainland, so it seems kind of backwards and

hypocritical to not have a dispensary here. The closest dispensary that both recreational and medicinal users in Ladner and Tsawwassen have to travel to is in Vancouver, which is absolutely ridiculous. Might I remind Mr. Hewitt that right by the Toys N’ Tech shop there are not one, but two liquor stores, both of them being popular establishments for

many drug users in Tsawwassen (yes, alcohol is a drug). Liquor Quicker is an alcoholic establishment that is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week, so why can’t a cannabis establishment have those hours? I hope that the sensible people of Tsawwassen will totally say yes to this application and make their feelings known to the City of Delta. Mark-Jens Barton

Lions to offer tree chipping this weekend

Taking down your Christmas tree can be a bit of a sad job. It marks the end of the holiday season, and the melancholy is compounded by the fact that clearing out that month-old tree can be a bit messy, what with the sticky needles falling everywhere. But here’s a surefire way to turn sorrow into eventual joy. Drop that pine, balsam or fir off at the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions and North Delta Lions tree-chipping operations at the South Delta Recreation Centre and

Ladner’s Memorial Park, respectively. Exchange smiles with the cheerful Lions members on hand and know that your donation is going to one of the community causes supported by the clubs. This season’s tree-chipping goes this weekend Jan. 8 to 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. COVID-19 protocols will be in place. The North Delta Lions took over the Sungod Arena location from the folded Scottsdale Lions last year and for several years have operated the tree-chipping in Ladner, an area also served by the

North Delta club. The tree-chipping is a major fundraiser for the club, which recently made significant donations to the Surrey/North Delta and South Delta food banks. The club also supports the Surrey/ North Delta and South Delta Meals on Wheels organizations, Mamas for Mamas, Deltassist’s Christmas food hamper/ grocery card program and many other local and Lions-supported charities. Last month, the club also donated $2,000 for B.C. Flood Relief. “It will be interesting to

see how the tree-chipping goes this year given the tree shortages caused by the flooding,” said Lions Club secretary Gary Kingston. “We’re hoping there are still a number of trees out there that people want to get rid of and that they’ll be generous with their donations so the Lions can continue to be a key provider to charities that help the needy in the community.” Despite a tough 2021 with so many events cancelled because of COVID19 restrictions, the club did successfully stage Easter and Halloween

drive-thru events at the Sungod Arena parking lot, with themed blow-ups on display and candy giveaways for children. “We’re trying to stay as active as we can in the community and hope that 2022 can be a much better

year for everybody in our wonderful community,” said Kingston. The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions will also be doing a bottle drive during their tree chipping at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

Despite the rain and wind on Saturday, Dec. 18, the TOOB Food Drive, benefiting Deltassist’s Emergency Food Cupboard, was a huge success. The citizens of South Delta came through for a very worthy community cause. More than $6,000 was collected in cash and food donations that was delivered to Deltassist’s headquarters in North Delta. The TOOB would like to thank all the volunteers and donors that made the event such a success. The TOOB would also like to thank all the organizations such as the Delta Optimist, the City of Delta, Delta Recreation, Immediate Images and Deltassist that helped promote the event.

Three metrics to know if exercise is working Obstacles are bound to appear as individuals embark on the road to getting healthier. Such obstacles come in many different forms, but one hurdle many individuals encounter is doubts about the effectiveness of their workout regimens. Everyone would love to reap instant rewards from exercise, and immediate gratification is not necessarily elusive. For example, individuals who begin exercising may find their energy levels and attitudes have improved after their first workout. However, individuals who are exercising to lose weight may be discouraged if the scale doesn’t immediately indicate they’re shedding unwanted pounds. That’s a significant obstacle to overcome, and it’s one reason why so many health professionals urge patience and

perseverance as individuals embark on their weight loss goals. Though it might not seem like much, industry professionals note that losing one to two pounds per week is a good sign that a workout routine is working. The following are three additional metrics that individuals can look to as they try to chart their exercise progress. 1. Target heart rate: Before beginning an exercise regimen, individuals, especially those who have been living a sedentary lifestyle, should speak with their physicians to determine what their target heart rate should be. They can then measure their exercise progress by what they need to do to reach that progress. At the outset, individuals may not need to exercise as vigorously to reach their target rates,

they will need to work harder to reach their target heart rate. This makes

target heart rate a good metric by which to measure exercise progress.

2. Repetitions: Repetitions are another reliable metric by which to measure exercise progress. The more repetitions individuals can do without straining, the stronger their muscles are becoming. Individuals should resist any urge to overdo it. The repetitions metric is only a useful measure of progress if individuals are capable of doing a rep without straining. 3. Body composition: This metric should come as no surprise. The more positively exercise affects the body, the more that will show in how the body looks. It can be easy to obsess over results when beginning an exercise regimen, but remaining patient and persistent and utilizing certain metrics to measure progress can keep individuals on the path to getting fit. -Metro Creative

The pros and cons of running Few physical activities inspire the devotion that avid runners have for running. Millions of individuals across the globe lace up their sneakers and run for miles on end each day, and the fitness experts at Fitbit note that running is the most popular activity in the world. The global popularity of running suggests it’s an activity that’s all gravy and no grief. However, running can take a toll on a body, and individuals who can’t wait to lace up their sneakers and hit the road should consider the pros and cons of running before doing so. Pros * Running and heart health: Running generally has a positive effect on heart health. The heart is a muscle, and much like

weight training can help strengthen muscles like biceps and triceps, running can strengthen the heart and make it more efficient. Cardiologists with the Copenhagen City Heart Study noted that jogging increases oxygen uptake, which makes it easier for the heart to pump a larger amount of blood and do its job more easily. In addition, various studies have found that running can reduce individuals’ risk for heart disease by a significant percentage. * Running and mental health: “Runner’s high” is a well-documented, yet not entirely understood phenomenon. Thought it’s often associated with the release of moodenhancing hormones known as endorphins and characterized as a

routine and euphoric byproduct of running, experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine note that research indicates very few runners actually experience runner’s high. Instead, runners may feel good after running because physical activity increases levels of endocannabinoids in the bloodstream. Higher levels of endocannabinoids may promote short-term responses like reduced

anxiety and a greater feeling of calm. This is an important distinction, as runners who don’t feel runner’s high after a long run should know that they’re likely still gaining some mental benefit from running, even if a long run makes them feel more nauseous than euphoric. * Running and brain power: Running also has been found to benefit brain power. Researchers

at the University of Ulm in Germany found that individuals who jogged for 30 minutes per day three times a week benefitted from a substantial improvement in concentration and visual memory. Cons * Running and joint health: Though many medical professionals now dispute that there’s a link between running and osteoarthritis, running can lead to wear and tear on the joints over time. It’s important to note that such degeneration can occur even in non-runners, especially those who live sedentary lifestyles. Being physically active is an important part of maintaining long-term joint health, but individuals who like to run should be sure to devise a balanced workout regimen that includes strength training to make the muscles and tissues around joints stronger. Running without strength training could contribute

to unhealthy joints. * Running and injury risk: All physical activities involve some measure of injury risk, but it’s still worth noting that runners are not immune to such risks. The Cleveland Clinic notes as many as 60 percent of runners will experience injuries that sideline them for several weeks or months. Plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, shin splits, and Achilles tendinitis are some injuries commonly suffered by runners. Common running injuries can make it hard to perform any cardiovascular exercise, which can have a significant and adverse effect on runners’ overall health. Though medical experts generally suggest the rewards of running outweigh the risks for healthy individuals, it’s still important that men and women weigh the pros and cons before lacing up their running shoes. -Metro Creative

men came to visit Jesus. They bring with them gold, frankincense, and myrrh to offer as gifts to the newborn baby and his parents. At face value these are rather peculiar gifts to offer a baby. It is not until we hear the rest of the story and life that ultimately leads to the cross that we discover the significance of these three gifts. For it is gold that is traditionally offered to a king. Frankincense is offered in the presence of deity and myrrh is used to anoint the dead. In the same way that a phone call was an unexpected gift, what are the unexpected gifts that have found meaning with you? Epiphany provides us with an opportunity to reflect on these gifts, gifts that may seem insignificant or unexpected at the time; yet hold significance for years to come.

It was among six championships cancelled by the International Ice Hockey Federation Council due to COVID-19 safety concerns. “While we respect the decision of the IIHF Council to cancel the six men’s and women’s world championships, we’re heartbroken for the athletes and staff associated with our U.S. U18 Women’s National Team who have been working so hard to prepare for the chance to compete for a gold medal,” said a written statement from USA Hockey. “We know how disappointing this news is for not only our team, but all those preparing to compete in the various world championships across the world.”

The journey to wearing Red, White and Blue

That hard work for Svejkovsky included two trips to Minnesota last summer as part of the extensive selection process and ultimately being one of just two players from the west coast to make the final roster. Los Angeles native Laney Potter was the other. It would have been the first time in red, white and blue colours for the Delta Hockey Academy U18 Girls Prep Team member. Svejkovsky has grown up learning the game in Hockey Canada’s development system and participated in just one other USA camp two years ago. This time, she advanced past the

initial 76-player camp back in July then locked up a roster spot at the annual USA Women’s Hockey National Festival in August. Svejkovsky didn’t know her status until she was back home. “At the camp there were some really amazing girls so I was just grateful for the opportunity to be there,” Svejkovsky reflected. “I was a little torn. I thought I represented myself well but at the same time everybody there had some pretty special things to offer. At the end of the day it was just the type of player they were looking for and I just happened to fit that. I was super happy with the way I performed and either way I was just excited to get home and start training again to get better. “I grew up playing in Canada since I’m from a really small part of the U.S., so it was really amazing to see how skilled the girls are from the U.S. as well.”

A future Colgate Raider

Svejkovsky was to meet her US teammates in New Jersey before heading to Sweden. She at least knows she will be spending the next stage of her life in the New York area come September. She has accepted a scholarship offer from Colgate University, culminating a recruiting process that was initiated soon after she was eligible to begin dialogue with NCAA programs. The Raiders’ roster includes forward Katie Chan who is not only a DHA alumni but Svejkovsky’s one-time neighbor when her family was living in Richmond. “Right off the bat they were an amazing school with an amazing coaching staff. Ultimately the coaching staff is why I decided to commit there,” continued Svejkovsky. “I love the way they play and really there was nowhere else I would rather go. It just turned out to be a really good fit for me and a bonus that I know someone on the team. “It’s super cool that we grew up playing together and she was my neighbour

SUBMITTED PHOTOS

It took two selection camp trips to Minnesota over the summer for Ava Svejkovsky to earn her spot on Team USA that should have been in Sweden this week for the 2022 U18 World Championships. when I was six-or-seven-years-old. I would always look across our yard and see (Katie) shooting in her garage. She was definitely somebody I looked up to growing up through hockey.”

Hockey is a true family affair

Svejkovsky has also received plenty of help from within her own home. Her father Yogi is a former NHL player and a renowned skill development coach currently working for the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. Her brother Lukas was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2020 and is in his final season of junior hockey with

the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League. “My dad is such a big influence. Ever since I was at a young age he has been my hockey coach and to this day he still sends me videos,” she added. “It used to be I don’t want to listen to you, your my dad kind of thing, but as I have got older, I’m really learning to appreciate just his hockey sense and the way he sees the game. “I see my brother’s passion for the game and it honestly has inspired me too. Now we are at the stage of our careers that we can do things like stick handle together. It’s really an awesome thing.”

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

HINSLEY, Heather (nee Tamboline) In loving memory of Heather Hinsley (nee Tamboline), we are saddened to announce her passing on January 4, 2022.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

ALLEN, Fay Rose July 9, 2021 − December 23, 2021 Fay Rose Allen (née Tierney) passed peacefully on December 23, 2021, at 86 years of age, with family by her side. Fay was predeceased by her husband Ronald James (Ron) in 1993; her sisters June and Doreen; and her brother Delmar. She will forever be remembered and missed by her children Terry (Katie) and Nicole (Millo); her six grandchildren Tiffany (Kevin), Megan, Rachel, Alison, Sarah, and Michael; four great−grandchildren Nolan, Anslee, Beckham, and Bradley; and sisters Beverly, Doris, and Judy. Fay was born in Vancouver, B.C. Shortly after marrying Ron, they moved to Montreal, P.Q., and then to New York City. They moved back to B.C. in 1969, settling in Tsawwassen, where she raised her family and lived until moving to Thunder Bay, ON, a few years ago. Fay will be remembered for her generosity, humour, and love of family.

BRADLEY, George H. C. George H. C. Bradley, 94, of Delta, B.C., peacefully passed away on December 23rd. George was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan, the youngest in a family of 4 older sisters. He grew up in both England and Canada. George had a distinguished career in the Royal Canadian Air Force, initially as a skilled pilot and later as Air Force Base Commander/Colonel. George was particularly proud of his accomplishments as a Staff Officer attached to US Navy NAS Moffat Field, San Diego and as Canadian Rep for Air Standardization at the Pentagon. In his spare time, he enjoyed exercising and excelled at golf. George was charming and cheerful, developing friendships easily. He was fond of greeting loved ones with a hearty “how are you doing sunshine!”

BRAMALL, Michael L. November 11, 1949 − December 13, 2021

He was a true gentle man and loved by many. We will miss him so much.

Michael Lorne Bramall, age 72, died at Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner on December 13, 2021. He was a 1968 graduate of Brentwood College School. He went on to work for the airline industry in maintenance operations. Michael was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating. He is survived by his sons, Casey and Cory, and grandchildren, Molly and Teagan. He is also survived by his three brothers, Richard, Terry and Stephen. There will be no formal service or memorial as was requested by the deceased.

George is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Elisabeth, his blended family of 3 sons, 1 daughter, 6 grandchildren and a niece. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en in honour of George’s memory.

Heather will be lovingly remembered by her mother Hazel McCubbin; brother Gord (Barb) Tamboline; sister Glenda Dube; as well as her three children Brianna (Ron), Victoria, and Kirsten. She was predeceased by her father, Ernie Tamboline. Heather was born in Ladner, BC in March of 1958, where she lived and grew up. She was a woman of strong faith and conviction and enjoyed spending time within the church. Heather also had the gift of building deep relationships, and cherished the time she spent with close friends catching up over tea. Heather always said that her greatest accomplishments in life were her 3 beautiful daughters. She will be deeply missed but we know it’s not goodbye, just “see you later”. Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The family would like to thank the staff at Kin Village and Northcrest Care Centre for their care and compassion over the years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC. A private Celebration of Life will be held for close friends and family. Online condolences can be made at https://www.arbormemorial.ca/en/richmond/obitu aries/heather-hinsley-nee-tamboline/76633 Funeral arrangements entrusted to Richmond Funeral Home.

Richmond Funeral Home • (604) 273-3748

A celebration of his life will follow as soon as Covid regulations allow.
