Teachers ‘on edge’ about students returning Full classrooms, inconsistent ventilation and filtration among DTA’s list of concerns DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Bringing students back from their Christmas holiday break amidst the pandemic’s fifth wave has a lot of teachers worried for their students’ and their own health, says Delta Teachers’ Association’s (DTA) President Susan Yao. Students across B.C. were called back to school on Monday, following a one-week delay to allow school districts and teachers to prepare “enhanced safety plans” for their return. But, as Omicron cases continue to surge, some feel that it won’t be enough. “I would say, judging by the emails and the phone calls that are coming in, that people are on edge. They’re not sure what’s going to happen ... The rapid increase in the [case] numbers means that there’s a potential for outbreaks,” says Yao. Following Friday’s (Jan. 7) news conference from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside and Health Minister Adrian

the importance of providing N95s for classroom-use, prioritizing teachers for booster shots and ensuring that there is proper ventilation in schools and creating plans to get those in place. On Monday, Delta Superintendent Doug Sheppard sent an emailed letter out to

parents detailing potential school closures, the changes to contact tracing and personal prevention measures to help keep school communities safe. In the letter, he explained that, in place of contact tracing, public health will issue a notification in the event of a declared outbreak, or schools will issue one if there is a significant decrease in attendance from their typical rates for that time of year. As for functional closures, “if this occurs, we will endeavour to notify you as soon as possible (via email, district and school websites and social media) and hopefully before your child arrives at school for the day,” read the letter. Yao stressed how important it is to do everything in our power to protect one another, including getting vaccinated and wearing a well-fitting mask. “Teachers care and they want their students to be safe. They want to be safe. They want to go home and not be fearful that they’re bringing something home to their own kids and family,” says Yao. -With files from Glacier Media

A BETTER SOLUTION FOR WEST COAST CONTAINER CAPACITY GCT’s Deltaport Berth 4 expansion plan has a smaller footprint and a smart, incremental approach. That means less environmental impact… and it is less expensive too, which will help keep Canadian port rates competitive. DP4 is privately funded, so there is no risk for taxpayers, unlike the other very expensive ($3.5 billion!) and flawed plan.
The Port of Vancouver’s Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2), a taxpayer-backed mega-project builds a massive, artificial island in the ecologically sensitive Salish Sea, causing damage Environment Canada says will be “permanent, irreversible, and continuous.” How is that in Canada’s interest?
GCT's DP4 is the better solution. It's time for the Port of Vancouver to stop pushing its own flawed project, consider the public interest, and stop obstructing the better alternative.

It’s more important than ever to support seniors in longterm care and assisted living facilities, says KinVillage’s Chief Executive Officer Dan Levitt, and he can see just how determined South Delta is to do exactly that. This sentiment is echoed by Janice Miller, manager of marketing and community relations at Bria Communities, which operates Tsawwassen’s independent living and longterm care communities The Waterford and The Wexford. “People want to keep each other safe, and they want to be safe [themselves] ... Our residents, they’re living in a community together, and there’s a real comradery there. It’s like being part of a family,” says Miller. In line with the latest provincial health orders announced on Dec. 21, visitors 12-years and older entering long-term care and assisted living facilities, are required to test negative on an administered rapid point-ofcare test prior to visiting. They also must provide proof of full vaccination. Importantly, only essential visitors and, as of Jan. 4, one designated social visitor, are permitted at long-term care

facilities, while all visitors continue to be permitted at assisted living facilities. “Essential visits include visits for compassionate reasons, such as end-of-life care or those essential to a resident’s care and mental wellbeing,” explains B.C.’s provincial and regional restrictions website. Each long-term care facility will then evaluate which visitors qualify as essential. “People living in care, they
are toward the end of their life, and why we exist at KinVillage is to help them live life to the fullest, so, we do want to see as much normalcy as possible, and the measures that we put into place are exactly so that we can celebrate life together ... because it’s a really sacred time,” says Levitt. The latest requirements are layered on top of existing precautions like mask-wearing in common spaces or, for some
facilities like KinVillage and Augustine House, during the entire visit, as well as practicing good hand hygiene and physical distancing. Despite the restrictions fluctuating throughout the pandemic, Executive Director of Augustine House Jackie Reiners agrees that their residents remain “on board” with adhering to the new protocols. “We have such good uptake with the vaccine ... We have people who believe in the science and are willing to step up and do what they need to do,” says Reiners. As visitor restrictions heighten, the B.C. Liberals put out a press release on Jan. 4, calling for the government to ensure that every long-term care resident within the province is permitted to have at least one essential visitor. “Now that visiting restrictions are once again in place, it is absolutely vital the NDP makes it clear that every resident can have at least one essential visitor, regardless of the care home in which they reside. We are calling on the Minister of Health to make this decision as soon as possible and ensure the wellbeing of our vulnerable seniors as we continue to fight COVID-19,” said Shirley Bond, Interim Leader of the Official Opposition.

AlmostallDeltaemployees are double vaccinated DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta staff and volunteers are now required to be double-vaccinated against COVID-19 or undergo regular testing as per the city’s freshly rolled-out vaccination policy. Following council approving the mandatory vaccination policy in November, the policy officially went into effect Monday (Jan. 10). Of Delta’s approximate 1,300 employees, only about 30 have either not yet received their second COVID-19 vaccination dose or did not submit their proof by Jan. 10, says City Manager Sean McGill. “It’s about safety for staff, the public, anyone coming into our facilities. The Public Health Officer has been very
clear over and over again that the best defence against COVID-19 – and even its variants – is through vaccination,” he said Though there have been some concerns from certain individuals, the overall process of gathering everyone’s proof of vaccination and setting up testing plans was “quite positive,” McGill added. Any employees who refuse to comply or provide false, misleading information, may be subject to disciplinary action up to, and including, termination. Employees who are unable to get vaccinated, and have discussed and justified their reasoning to the Director of Human Resources, are entitled to accommodation and may be required to work in alternative locations
or positions, as well as be subject to more safety measures, reads the vaccination policy. This mandatory vaccination policy for staff and volunteers follows earlier proof-of-vaccination policies at Delta recreation centres for all patrons 12-years and older, which went into effect Oct. 24. “In consideration of these previous decisions and supporting rationale, to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, a workplace vaccination policy is an important measure that supplements our other workplace health and safety measures under our Communicable Disease Plan, including daily health screening, mandatory masking and physical distancing,” reads the Oct. 28 Delta staff report.

DPD set policing priorities
After a year of review, gathering input and consulting, the Delta Police Department has released its 2022-25 Community Safety and Well-Being plan. The plan, created with the Delta Police Board, is progressive and responsive to calls for police modernization, says DPD, while keeping the philosophy of “No Call Too Small” at the forefront. Delta Police says the new plan embraces the principles of collaboration, service, diversity and inclusiveness and recognizes that police operate in a complex environment, within a myriad of social and health issues. To form the foundation for the plan, the DPD conducted a workload analysis, an environmental scan, and incorporated priorities from the Ministry of Public Safety and the City’s Foundation for the Future. Further input was gathered from community surveys, dialogue with community partners, the Delta Police Board including Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Ken Baird , the Delta School District and of course the DPD team. “One of the principles we recognize within this plan is that while police play an important role in public safety and community well-being, so too do the community and our partners,” says Chief Neil Dubord. “Obviously responding to public safety incidents is squarely in the realm of police, but we are seeking to work more closely with our partners in areas such as social responsibil-
ity and risk prevention.” The DPD has committed to measuring the plan’s progress through benchmarks under four key performance indicators – crime, community safety and well-being, police legitimacy and efficiency. “I think the public will be pleased to learn that we’ve committed to publicly reporting on progress. These benchmarks will be published regularly on our website,” added Dubord. A key priority outlined in the new plan is to build safe communities for all those connected to Delta and the Tsawwassen First Nation. Delta Police will strive to accomplish this through encouraging citizen participation and dialogue through social media and our visible presence. Another priority is to support vulnerable people and those experiencing mental health challenges. The approach here will be focused on harm reduction, with the intent being to connect vulnerable people with the community-based supports. Multi-channel education and awareness campaigns on issues such as domestic violence and cyber-crime will also be supported. You can view the full 2022-2025 Community Safety & Well-Being Plan at: https://deltapolice.ca/. Look under the publications page for the link. -Submitted by Delta Police

MoreCOVIDchallenges forbusinesscommunity Surging Omicron variant case numbers could potentially impact staffing levels in days ahead MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta business community is asking for a level of patience as it deals with more potential obstacles regarding COVID-19. It was during a media briefing last week Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry warned what the surging Omicron variant could mean in the days ahead to daily business operations. “We need to anticipate that as many as a third of your workforce at any one time may become ill with COVID-19, and they may not be able to come to work,” said Henry. She noted the latest strain is harder to detect, since it causes milder upper respiratory symptoms that could be very similar to a cold or influenza, at least early on. “We need to adapt businesses so we can operate at these reduced numbers.” Henry also ordered all B.C. businesses to have a COVID-19 safety plan in place. The plan will include employees working from home when possible, practicing physical distancing, and keeping staff separate from customers. The order is specific to industry and businesses. It all adds up to more challenges for Delta businesses and adapting on the fly to keep doors open even if it means the same level of customer service or operating hours can’t be provided. “While Delta has not yet seen significant reductions in business hours offered at many of our retail and service outlets, this still remains a likely possibility for the future. I suspect that when faced with a workplace shortage, many businesses will either shorten their hours while continuing to offer service multiple days a week or we may see businesses respond by reducing the number of days a week they are open,” said Delta Chamber of Commerce executive director Jill McKnight. “Each business will make the decision that works best for their business model. I can say with certainty that many business owners are concerned about this for the coming weeks and months. The challenge is planning for something which you don’t know when you will
need to implement. “Fortunately, in the early part of the pandemic, many Delta businesses showed their resiliency and adaptability by learning new skills and pivoting to move to online ordering, curbside pickup and virtual service offerings. As the Omicron cases increase, customers and businesses alike, can re-apply these skills to pivot back to alternative service offerings.” In Ladner, there has fortunately been no temporary business closures or reduced hours so far, but that could change on a day-to-day basis. “We have not heard directly from any of the member businesses, nor have we polled any businesses or made inquiries at this time. That said, many of us have heard of friends, associates or family members that have recently been exposed to or diagnosed with COVID, so it is possible that staffing levels in local businesses are or will be impacted,” noted Ladner Business Association president Janice Lawlor-Cooper. McKnight added the latest health restrictions that have led to the temporary closure of indoor fitness facilities and dance studios have resulted in some of those businesses improvising to serve their customers and students. “We have seen them return to virtual coaching, loaning out equipment for clients to work from home and switching to outdoor classes, even with sub-zero temperatures, continued McKnight. “We acknowledge and thank these businesses for following the public health orders. We will continue to do all that we can to support these impacted businesses and share available supports with them as soon as they come online.” McKnight adds Delta Chamber of Commerce continues to be a valuable resource for all Delta businesses (not only Chamber members) about current public health announcements, available government supports and all matters relating to COVID support during the pandemic. Businesses looking for more information are encouraged to reach out to the chamber at 604-946-4232.

he recent snowfall events, while lovely to look at and a lot of fun for the kids sledding down Diefenbaker Park in Tsawwassen, has taken its toll on many of us. City of Delta crews have been working flat out since Christmas Day, attending to several significant snow events. The first big dump of snow started on Dec. 24 and the next winter blast followed Dec. 29. The latest came over night last Wednesday (Jan. 5) dumping another 15 centimetres on the region. It has meant a lot of long hours for city crews - many who sacrificed their Christmas holiday time with families – to ensure the safe passage on our roads and streets. Has it all gone smoothly? Nope. I’ve seen more than a fair share of comments on our community social media pages wondering why this street or that street had not been cleared. Our newsroom has been copied on letters to the city expressing anger as to why city crews are not doing their jobs and critical of the work and the effort of our city crews. You simply can’t please everyone and that is certainly the case here. Overall, I think our city crews have done an excellent job. I live in North Delta along the Scott Road corridor and travel along both the Delta and Surrey side. I have to say that Delta’s side has looked a whole lot better than the Surrey side on many occasions. City officials are looking at their snow clearing bylaws and plan to report back to council on strengthening bylaws around snow clearing, the responsibilities of businesses, strata councils etc. Could things be better? Sure, they always can, but to suggest, as some have, rather cruelly I might add, on social media, that city crews are lazy and not doing their jobs, is way offside and totally unwarranted.

What kind of mask you wear says a lot about you
M
y father believed you could tell the calibre of a man by his shoes, his watch and his pen. He was born in the 1930’s and thankfully social cues have changed, yet I wonder, can we judge a person by their mask? Mandatory for now, masks are part of our future. I know that from the growing pile in my drawer. During the early days of the pandemic there were some hilarious DYI masks. Remember those cut up water bottles stuck on peoples’ heads while they shopped, or the couple who glued maxi pads to their faces. Inventive, but stupid. Most people wear the boring, but practical, blue paper disposable surgical masks. Even after two years of looking at them I still get the feeling the person behind them escaped from an operating room. Then there are black masks. Honestly since I saw Jamie Dornan in the BBC drama
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
series, The Fall, I can never look at a black mask and not think murderer. Black is my go to colour, but never in a mask. You can show your allegiance to any cause with your mask, like a favourite sports team, religion, country or political candidate. There are even coronavirus couture masks, with sequins and sexy prints. The doggy masks are the cutest, (especially when the person has a beard), the creepiest are the skeleton masks. Gaiter masks, (or neck warmers), are the silliest.
No doubt the choice of suppressed bank robbers and cool snow boarders. My mask choices are very conservative, plain light coloured linen masks are my go too. Yet due to the highly transmissible omicron variant, I’m back to wearing my Rain Goose mask I bought a year ago at Centre Stage Accessories in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. It features Dr. Bonnie’s uplifting message and has two layers of thick cotton with a removable filter. It screams, “I’m taking this virus seriously.” Maybe before you step out into the pandemic world take a moment to check if your mask projects an image you’re comfortable with, does it reflect who you are? Or maybe be like my husband and grab anything that’s in the vicinity, clean or dirty, and just slap it on and get the job done. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writer who continues to be grossed out by wet discarded masks stuck to the pavement.

The end of history and renewal of humanity
Editor: The airwaves are overflowing with the news of the pandemic. One of the stations was interviewing an eminent personality. The interviewer asked “And a final question. Will we ever go back to the routine that we practiced prior to the pandemic?” The gentleman replied “Good Lord no. We should not go back to the old routine. Now is the chance for the world leaders to put an end to history”. I began to reflect on what the gentleman was trying to convey. What a profound statement “Put an end to history”. The entire world, with combined capacity to blow up the world twice over, was brought to its knees by a minuscule virus – the same virus whose ancestors might be the forbearer of the
human race, in terms of evolution. Yet, remarkably, the year 2021 that has necessarily kept people apart has, in many ways, brought us closer. Across the Globe, millions have been inspired by stories of people volunteering in their communities, helping those in need. On Christmas Day I got to experience firsthand, humans helping humans without being asked to do so. Few days back before the Holy Day, I had to visit the emergency department at the Delta Hospital where I was advised to take complete rest, no driving or any strenuous work. When I got up in the morning of Dec. 25th, I was in a winter wonderland. My first thought was who to contact for clearing our driveway. But low and behold when I saw my front
porch and the driveway, the snow had already been shoveled. My neighbors Sukh, who had just moved in their new abode in November and Tony had cleared my driveway and the front porch. What a wonderful and random act of kindness. We are hardly acquainted with Sukh and his wife Inder. Tony and Madelene the other neighbor has hardly recovered from his illness. The media - print, visual and air-ways – are always full of stories of man’s inhumanity to other humans. However, I am convinced that for every bad news story there may be hundreds that may be heart-warming. Hope the media will start enlightening people of the humanity that exists in people around the world. R.H. (Rusty) Deshmukh
Editor: I would like to thank our neighbour to the west of us for this thoughtfulness and physical assistance to us in this time of deep snow. He has been out before the sun comes up (when the sun comes up?) shov-
elling the sidewalk and driveway every day that it is needed. Bruno and his wife, Jan, don’t hesitate to reach out and assist us by also taking out the weekly curb side garbage (every two weeks in our case). We all live on 16th in Tsawwassen.
The neighbours to the east also check in on us (ladies age 78 and 91) to see if we need anything. We are so grateful to be sandwiched between these caring people who make us feel safe in our home. Mary Jackson and Fran Sutherland

This just breaks my heart Editor: I just read a letter entitled “Christmas doesn’t always bring out the best” in the Jan. 6th edition of the Optimist, and I must say this absolutely breaks my heart and makes me so angry that people would do this. Andrew, if your son is the young man that does my recycling garbage, I commend you on raising
a man who not only does an incredible job, but does it with a smile on his face! He is the best part of our Monday! My son and I put together gift bags for him and wait to give it to him on holidays. We are his first pick up at 7 a.m. All of them work very hard but there is an X-factor in your boy as he goes beyond and often
stacks and puts the boxes off to the side for us, rather than just throwing them down. This holiday he was wearing reindeer antlers playing music happily doing his job. This is appalling that someone has done this. I can’t think of someone more deserving for doing a thankless job with such a phenomenal attitude! Stacey Huntley

Additional sidewalks planned for Delta SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The city is going to undertake consultations with residents on Upland Drive, Saratoga Drive and Belair Drive to seek feedback on proposed “Slow Streets” zones as well as sidewalks in their neighbourhood. Speed humps were installed three years ago on those Tsawwassen streets following support for traffic calming by area residents, however, currently no sidewalks exist in the neighbourhood. A report to council notes the city continues to receive letters of concern about traffic speeds and volumes, although, based on traffic data collected in the fall of 2020, the speed humps have demonstrated to be effective in lowering the vehicle travel speeds. The city plans to install “Neighbourhood Slow Zone” signs as a reminder as part of the slow
streets initiative. Also, since Upland Drive, Saratoga Drive and Belair Drive do not have sidewalks, most pedestrians have to share the travel lane with vehicles, so staff recommended to council that the city get feedback from residents on the installation of sidewalks. Over the past year, the issue of Delta neighbourhoods having poor sidewalk networks has become a concern raised by council. The city noted in a recent report that a number of older neighbourhoods in Delta were developed without sidewalks, curbs and gutters. Sidewalks have typically been delivered over the years through new developments and capital projects within the Neighbourhood Road Improvements Program. However, with increased requests for infilling of missing sidewalks, council approved
additional funding in its annual capital plan. The Neighbourhood Livability and Safety Improvements Plan was developed in 2021 to improve accessibility and enhance pedestrian connections within communities. Council recently approved an engineering department recommendation to install sidewalks in several South Delta and North Delta streets as part of the new program. The new sidewalks will be installed next to the existing curbs and tie into existing sidewalks. Council recently approved the 2022 city operating budget which includes additional funding in the capital program for the Neighbourhood Livability and Safety Improvements Plan for various sidewalk connections, crosswalks, road safety and enhanced cycling infrastructure program.

‘Significant’ Delta trees to be protected SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Just what should be considered a significant tree worth protecting in Delta? The issue was raised during council’s discussion last month on a zoning amendment application to allow a subdivision of two properties at 7458 and 7468 115 Street into four, single-detached residential lots. There is already a dwelling currently under construction on the north portion of one of the lots. A planning department report notes there are 19 trees on the site, 16 of which are proposed to be removed including 14 located within the proposed building footprints. Many of the trees within the building footprints are in moderate to poor condition, a staff report notes. For the 32 replacement trees required, the own-
ers are proposing to plant 12 replacement trees and provide cash-in-lieu for 20 trees. The owners would also be required to provide tree retention and replacement security, cash-in-lieu of tree replacement and enter into a tree retention and replacement restrictive covenant. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos wondered whether the applicants could explore with city staff other options in order to retain significant trees at the site. Council agreed to hold off granting preliminary approval and sending the application to a public hearing. Also on the same council agenda was final approval of Delta’s updated tree protection bylaw. Approved by council, those amendments are supposed to be based on best practices found in bylaws in other cities, as well as comments

from the public, staff and council. Staff are also reviewing internal practices when it comes to arborist reports, particularly those by applicants seeking the removal of large diameter and/or a significant number of trees. Staff will obtain independent, Delta-initiated arborist reports when deemed warranted to analyze those reports. Efforts have been made to balance the rights of property owners with the interests of the city and community in retaining trees, the report notes. The revisions also take into consideration situations in which certain trees may no longer be desirable to retain, such as when a tree poses a hazard or is inappropriate for its location. Not included in the revised bylaw was consideration of significant trees, a topic that is to come back in a separate upcoming report to council.

Applications being accepted for Summer Jobs program
Canadian employers and small businesses have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and some are struggling to hire the workers they need. Young people have also been impacted, and continue to face obstacles in finding quality jobs that will help them earn money, grow professionally, and build their careers. Help is here to face these business challenges in the form of the Canada Summer Jobs program. The CSJ program is a long-standing Government of Canada program that strives to help youth from ages 15 to 30 obtain their first summer work experience. This year, the program is aiming to create up to 100,000 full-time summer jobs for young people across the country. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, Minister of
Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, said the program is a win-win for local businesses and youth. “As a member of Parliament it’s one of the direct ways you can create jobs and employee young people and just connect to the business leadership in your community and I really like that,” said Qualtrough. “It’s quite impactful. As part of the process, the local MP establishes priorities, so we chose youth and children, small businesses, persons with disabilities, agriculture and farming and community-based programs. Employers who fall within those priorities will get higher marks in terms of the number of jobs they could get through this program. “It’s not a small number. Last year we had 374 jobs here in Delta
over the summer, with about one and a half million dollars that came into Delta through this program. It’s a great way for employers to hire a young person. It’s been a really positive experience for all involved here in Delta.” Through the program, public and private sector employers will be reimbursed for up to 50 per cent of British Columbia minimum wage, and not-for-profit employers will be fully reimbursed for British Columbia minimum wage. At the same time, young people in British Columbia will gain experience they need and make money at the same time. Employers interested in applying for funding to hire young Canadians next summer have until Jan. 25 to submit their applications. Visit: Canada.ca/Canadasummer-jobs.

This past holiday season was a flurry of activity for local community group Women Helping
Women, as they distributed approximately 750 care packages and organized two trailers of emergency supplies for flood-impacted Abbotsford and
Tulameen. And it wouldn’t have been possible without all the generous and gracious help from the community, says organizer and Ladner resident
Pindi Mann. “It’s a great feeling to be able to help in our small, little way, and know that maybe we brought a little bit of joy to somebody’s Christmas
morning ... The community really came forward and really helped us out and, in turn, helped out these communities,” says Mann. Women Helping Women’s Fraser Valley team put together 122 care boxes together for women in the Abbotsford and Mission area, while South Delta’s team packed more than 500 for the local community. Following the severe B.C. rainstorms, they sent Abbotsford a trailer full of emergency supplies for the folks impacted and 140 care boxes up to Tulameen, who was also severely impacted, as well as another trailer of supplies. “On behalf of the Tulameen and District Fire Department, thank you! Your generosity and kindness will help many residents in Coalmont and Tulameen,” wrote Tulameen Fire Chief Jody Woodford in the
comments of a Women Helping Women Facebook post. The group’s GoFundMe was also incredibly successful and surpassed their $5,000 goal, hitting $5,294, with all the funds going towards purchasing items for the gift boxes. Care packages within Delta went to local women, the transition house Azure Place, Wings 2nd Stage, Reach, the Boys & Girls Club, the Delta Hospital, Deltassist’s Young Moms group, Deltassist’s Stop the Violence group and the Early Years Program, reads their Facebook page. “We’re grateful to our community for coming out and supporting this cause. We’re grateful to our volunteers and all the businesses that collected for us. It’s a busy time of year and they still had boxes out for us and stored all of it during such a busy time,” says Mann.
DeltaKids wanting to hear from parents with 2-minute survey DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The group of community partners want some answers on how to better help families. DeltaKids – a coalition of all the agencies working to serve children and families in Delta – is asking parents of young children to take a quick, 2-minute survey from their Early Years subcommittee. “We are interested in the experiences of children in Delta before they enter school. If you help raise a young child, we are interested in your thoughts and experiences,” reads the survey. If you have a child that was born in 2017 or later,
DeltaKids is hoping to get some feedback on how the community can better support and meet the needs of children and families living within the city. The survey includes questions about accessing Delta programs and services, challenges faced when trying to access these and the availability of child-raising assistance when it’s needed. It will be open until Family Day on Feb. 21. To participate in the survey, head to https:// bit.ly/3nOlkuB. “We work together to build Delta’s capacity as a child-friendly community where all children thrive,” reads DeltaKids’ website.

A total of 130 species of birds were detected on Count Day within the 24 km diameter circle. This is two species more than last year’s total of 128, which was the second highest count in Canada, after Victoria, B.C. Four additional species: American Bittern, Common Murre, Red Knot, and Rhinoceros Auklet, were missed on the official Count Day, but were recorded on the three days prior to or after
joined in to help Birds Canada and National Audubon Society keep track of the population of wild birds every year since 1900. You can learn more about the program at birdscanada.org/cbc.

Among the 130 species of birds detected during the Ladner Christmas Bird Count were an American Kestrel (left) and a Anna’s hummingbird. Dec. 19, which is considered Count Week. Highlights included a Northern Waterthrush at Deas Island, a type of ground-warbler that usually migrates to winter in Central and South
America. Another rare bird on the count for the second year in a row was a Northern Mockingbird at Boundary Bay. This species is only regularly found in northern Oregon
to the south, but a few manage to wander into our area most years. Other noteworthy finds included 12 Least Sandpipers in south Richmond, two Greater White-fronted Geese at

Everyone welcome to worship with us 10:30 A.M. This Sunday Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father in Heaven Pastor: Jason Truell 中文主日崇拜 10:30 am
I am excited for the new year. Although some may consider January just another month, I believe it presents us an opportunity to refresh our plans, goals, and dreams. In Philippians 2, Paul says, “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” The pandemic has been polarizing and divisive in many respects, so working towards unity will require intentional effort. I pray that finding unity and love even with those who disagree with you will be a goal that you attain this year. Paul continues to say, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (2:3). We can work toward unity by pursuing humility and looking to the interest of others and not just our own (2:4).
Minister’s Minute PAUL PARK
SOUTH DELTA BAPTIST CHURCH
Selfishness will drive our community towards further division, but considering others more significant than ourselves and serving them faithfully will heal broken relationships. Finally, Paul exhorts the Philippian church to look to Christ Jesus as the ultimate example of this kind of uniting love. Even though Jesus was equal to God in every way, he “emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being
born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (2:7-8). Many of us have focused on fighting for our rights during this tough season, and even though our rights are important, our community would be a much better place if we all emulated Christ’s love by sacrificially laying down some of our own rights to serve one another with love. Philippians 2 has been our anthem at our church throughout the pandemic. Our goal is to love like Jesus, and we have the opportunity to do that well in 2022. May your goals and plans come to fruition in the new year according to God’s will. May God’s loving kindness and faithfulness lead you and protect you. May his unending love inspire us to love one another well.

Scrambling around COVID-19 restrictions Tournaments wiped off January schedule while games will be played with no spectators MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta high school basketball coaches are having to adjust their schedules on the fly as they work around updated COVID-19 related Provincial Health Officer orders that include suspending tournament play through January. The No. 7 provincially ranked South Delta Sun Devils were slated to play in three tournaments this month, with stops in Vancouver, Richmond and Pitt Meadows over consecutive weeks. Instead, it will be a number of exhibition games, along with their regularly scheduled South Fraser AAAA League games. “I have a bunch of exhibition games set-up and more schools wanting to play us. It is so hard, as it feels like we have lost all our momentum and positive vibes,” said SDSS head coach Sharon Butler, whose team will face No. 5 ranked Churchill on Friday in Vancouver. The Sun Devils’ January schedule also includes their annual Stebbings/Murray Cup rivalry game with the Delta Pacers on Thursday Jan. 20 at SDSS. It tips-off at 5:30 p.m. and the boys contest will follow at 7:15 p.m. The doubleheader is widely considered the highlight of the school sports calendar year, at least when it comes to com-
petition between the regional rivals, and are always played in front of a packed gym. That won’t be the case this year with the PHO order also stipulating spectators being prohibited at this time. At least the games will proceed after not being played at all in 2021. “While I know these restrictions are frustrating, and will require changing plans for teams, it is important our schools and teams respond accordingly, and ensure we are all doing our part to ensure that school sport can continue through the next number of weeks and months, without further interruption,” said B.C. School Sports executive director Jordan Abney in a written statement. “We are hopeful that this Omicron driven wave will subside in time for changes to be made to allow for tournaments to happen in time for zone and provincial championships.” Typically those showcase tournaments are played prior to spring break in March with the Langley Events Centre hosting the bulk of the B.C. championships for girls and boys. Zone qualifying playoffs usually happen in mid-to-late February. Could there be some flexibility to the season if need be? “We haven’t really talked about it (yet) but I think it’s sort of in the back of everyone’s
OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO
The Stebbings Murray Cup rivarly games between the Delta Pacers and South Delta Sun Devils senior teams will be played for the first time in two years next Thursday, but without fans. mind,” said SDSS co-athletic director and B.C. School Sports vice-president Brent Sweeney. “With the fall season (that was extended by a week) we have seen there can or has to be a level of flexibility with things. Another thing to think about
is the availability of the facility. That’s something we really don’t have much control over. There may be some creativity required. “Everyone wants to see the basketball provincials return. It’s probably the marquee
event of the year for the entire province and all of school sport. We’re hopeful everything is able to happen and be on schedule. With smaller zones now, playoffs are less timeconsuming and we don’t have to do them over two or three weeks.”
Silver medal finish earns Delta curlers trip to U18 nationals It was nearly a golden weekend on home ice for Team Bowles at the B.C. U18 Women’s Curling Championships, hosted by the Delta Thistle Curling Club. Skipped by Delta’s Emily Bowles, the hometown team fell 6-3 to Team
Richards in the gold medal game. Both teams will represent British Columbia at next month’s U18 Canadian Championships in Timmons, ON. The Bowles rink also features Tunnel Town Curling Club’s Meredith Cole (third) and Keira McCoy (second), along
with Royal City Curling Club’s Chelsea Taylor. After getting off to a 1-2 start, the girls needed to sweep their final two roundrobin games Friday to stay in playoff contention. They did just that, rallying to defeat

Team Richards 6-5 then cruising to a 9-1 win over Team Wong, scoring three in the fifth and seventh ends. The girls had not only earned a playoff spot, but also prevailed through a complicated tiebreaker to advance directly to the final.

CASSIDY, Vincent Ambrose It is with heavy hearts that the family of Vincent Ambrose Cassidy announces his peaceful passing on January 8th, 2022 in Tsawwassen, B.C. at the age of 65, surrounded by his loving family who will continue his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Vince fought a courageous battle with Glioblastoma (Brain Cancer) after being diagnosed in 2018. Vince was a proud papa to his 3 grandsons; Memphis, Aidan and Kash, who filled his heart with so much love and happiness.
CARSCADDEN, Guy February 8, 1952 − December 22, 2021 Born in Vancouver in 1952, Guy was raised in Richmond in the 1950s and 1960s. Working in the backyard with his mother and father would create in Guy a love of gardening and landscape design and ultimately his formal topiary training. This would lead Guy into making his passion a livelihood with a landscape design business in the 1980s and 1990s. Many a backyard in Vancouver became the product of Guy’s vision. During this time, Guy was a fixture in the gay community in Vancouver, advocating for gay rights and other social causes. Guy’s life took an interesting turn when he became the City of Delta’s Cemeterian at Boundary Bay Cemetery in Tsawwassen in 1998. His restoration work of the fallen gravestones and memorials earned him a Friends of Heritage award from the city. Less recognized was Guy’s unofficial role as counsellor to the many people he found wandering the cemetery in need of someone to talk to during their time of loss. In 2014 Guy would become caretaker of Cammidge House at Boundary Bay Regional Park − a job that he held until his final days. This work was all part of Guy’s ongoing love of Boundary Bay and the community of Tsawwassen. All of Guy’s friends have been grateful for his support and friendship over the years and will miss his wry sense of humour and insight into the community. Thank you to Fraser Health and Delta Hospice for making Guy’s final days as comfortable as possible.

KOBILAN, John March 15, 1935 − November 25, 2021 John Kobilan passed away suddenly with his loving wife of 46 years, Denise, by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Anna, and sisters Mary and Anna. He is survived by stepchildren Marion, Ed and families, and several nieces and nephews. John was born and grew up in Princeton and had careers in mining, the lands division of MacMillan Bloedel and as a stockbroker. CREES, Esther Margaret March 10, 1931 − December 28, 2021 Esther Margaret Crees (nee Erickson) passed away peacefully on December 28 at the age of 90. Esther was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Denovan (Denny) Crees, and by her brother Perry Long. Esther’s life and memory are celebrated by her three daughters, Christina (Bill) Moulds, Elisa Crees, and Lorill Crees, as well as her grandchildren Emma, Sarah, and Mary Moulds, and Zachary Crees Tasker. Esther lived most of her life in Ladner, meeting her husband Denny at Delta High School. Her early years of marriage involved supporting Denny in his pursuit of motorsports, building their home and running Delta Taxi together. She wanted nothing more than her own family and devoted herself to motherhood upon the arrival of her children. Esther was closely involved with Ladner United Church, in worship, in song, and in service. She enjoyed creating striking floral arrangements for the weekly services, lending her beautiful alto voice to the choir and assisting with countless church events and conferences. A quiet and steady presence, Esther expressed herself through creativity in many mediums including sketching and painting, gardening, music, and sewing clothes, costumes, and countless stuffed animals for her family and others. Together with Denny, she worked tirelessly over many years, building the family’s treasured lakeside cabin. She spent many summers enjoying the beauty of the Cariboo with her family, especially while paddling in her canoe, singing around a campfire or watching a spectacular sunset. Her love of the natural world and animals was reflected in the many rescue and welfare charities she supported. Esther’s family is grateful for the compassionate and caring support she received from the dedicated staff at KinVillage during her final years. Mom grew up in Scotland during war time. From an early age she took care of her family, cooking, cleaning and working to support them. She met our father on a ski holiday in Norway. Together they enjoyed many bicycle trips around Scotland before immigrating to Canada in 1956. Mom lived a full and rich life raising her family while taking up many interests and sports, excelling at all of them. She became a great cook, excelled at playing bridge and enjoyed playing tennis for over 40 years. She traveled extensively throughout her life with family and friends enjoying their Whistler timeshare as an opportunity to see the world.
