Ladner resident heads Doctors of B.C. Ramneek Dosanjh says David Kason was a major influence in her interest in medicine
Q: The passion for your profession definitely goes beyond medicine. A: I think it’s to benefit the whole. I think in medicine people think doctors care only about doctoring. We care about our patients and the holistic perspective for them. Things like poverty or affordable housing. All these things matter to us. We know all those things are the social determinants of health and impact how well someone is. I have been really trying to push for primary reform and trying to get better conditions for our family doctors. It’s really hard to sustain and with the current pressures it’s getting even more difficult.
MARK BOOTH

She is a lifetime Ladner resident who happens to lead 14,000 physicians, residents and medical students across the province through a very challenging time. Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh has started her term as President of Doctors of B.C., a voluntary association that promotes a social, economic and political climate, which members can provide British Columbians with the highest standard of health care. It’s not her first time in a leadership role among her professional peers. The mother of three daughters has served in executive positions as secretary and president of BC Family Doctors and has been a member of Doctors of BC’s Representative Assembly since its inception. Dosanjh has been a family physician, hospitalist and child and youth mental health advocate for nearly a decade. Most recently, she was the physician lead for Child Youth Mental Health Substance Use Collaborative in White Rock/South Surrey. The Optimist had the opportunity to catch up with her recently to discuss a range of topics from her career to the current pandemic. Q: Tell us about your time growing up in Ladner and your aspirations to be involved in medicine. A: I was born and raised here. I’m definitely a small town, hometown
Lifetime Ladner resident Dr. Ramneek Dosanjh is President of Doctors of B.C. girl. I went to Hawthorne Elementary until Grade 6 then Holly Elementary for two years before graduating from Delta Secondary. Now my eldest daughter goes to DSS and my other two children go to Holly. Going into high school I knew I wanted to be in medicine. I loved the thought of science and making the difference in other people’s lives. I have to say one of my mentors was my own
50
family physician (the recently retired) Dr. David Kason. I had such respect and admiration for physicians with how they interact with patients and the ability to actually make a difference and be contributing to their life and well-being. That was important to me. Dr. Kason was my mom’s physician for 45 years. He delivered me and my siblings and was involved in the delivery of my daughters as well.”
Q: Are you asked a lot when will this pandemic be behind us? When will our lives get back to normal? A: The uncertainty is what feeds fear. The not knowing is so disconcerting at times and that’s for everybody, but what I do want to reiterate and acknowledge is we have come together like never before. People are doing the right thing. People are still caring and thinking of the best interest of everyone. That is heartwarming to be honest. People are getting tired. I’m hearing that from everyone, including my family and friends. Everyone is in a difficult and a challenging position, yet we have this together and vaccination rates are quite high. We’ve done this in a way to at least tell everybody I care about you. For me that is a true partnership collaboration.

South Park Elementary students with their letters to Delta council.
South Park Elementary students have a ‘dog poop problem’ at their school DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Following repeated “poop problem” incidents on their grass field, a grade-three class from South Park Elementary took matters into their own hands and wrote to Delta’s mayor and council to ask for help. And, by “poop problem”, they’re referring to the endless amounts of dog poop getting left behind on their field, which proceeds to gets stepped in, slipped on
and tracked into the school and its classrooms. “We would like help getting dog poop bag dispensers near entrances to our school yard. We love sharing our school yard with the community and their dogs, but poop often gets left on the ground ... In the past, posters have been made and put up to remind people to pick up the poop, but it doesn’t work for long,” reads one of the letters. Teacher Yvette Kruckenberg says her
class was motivated to take action after two days in a row of dog poop winding up in their classroom. So, when one of the main solutions from the group’s solution brainstorm was asking mayor and council for dog poop dispensers at the different entrances to the field, Kruckenberg helped her students write their businessstyle letters and dropped them off at City Hall. “I want to empower them, and I want them to feel like they have a
voice,” she says. The letters and map of proposed dispenser locations was circulated to council members before their Jan. 10 council meeting, but council did not offer up any discussion. Delta staff did, however, respond in the agenda’s external correspondence summary, saying that city staff would work with the Delta School District to put up more signage encouraging community members to use nearby Dennison Park instead
of the school field. “Staff would not recommend placing dog waste dispensers at the school site as it may encourage further use by dog owners,” the Delta staff response reads. Kruckenberg says the class will keep their eyes out for any improvement after signage gets put up – though it hasn’t necessarily deterred folks from leaving behind their dog poop in the past – and adds that they may be writing to council again if the situation hasn’t changed by June.

Project Pickle calls for more farming and food economy to be taught in school curriculum DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Following a grin-worthy presentation by Mike Schneider of agricultureliteracy program Project Pickle, Delta council agreed they’d like to see more children across the school district getting their hands in the dirt and fresh produce in their tummies. Schneider’s presentation at the Jan. 10 council meeting highlighted the importance of teaching children about farming and nutritional health, especially during the pandemic when food insecurity has become an even more prominent issue. “It brought goosebumps watching your videos, bringing the farm experience to so many young kids – it’s really special and invaluable at such a young age. It’s a privilege to have you
in the district. We’re so happy to have you,” said Coun. Alicia Guichon, who chairs Delta’s agriculture committee. And though “Farmer Mike” is already teaching 74 classes across Delta, or approximately 1,800 children, he would like to see this type of education spreading more widely across the Delta district and beyond. “I think Delta has already taken a lead role [promoting and teaching about farming]. I can’t think of many other school districts or cities within B.C. that have gone as far as we have here. There’s still lots of room to go, but I’m really of the view that, if there’s a certain degree of collaboration between the school district, the city and other stakeholders, we can start to push this even farther from a good beginning,” said Schneider.

Students have fun getting into the dirt and learning about food and farming in the Project Pickle program. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, following the presentation, asked how council can support Schneider and Project Pickle’s goals, as well as advocate for adding agriculture into school curriculums. “I would be most appreciative if mayor and council could talk about

these issues with the Ministries [of Education, Agriculture and Health] and the Premier ... It’s a common-sense approach to education – putting food and farming and agriculture into the curriculum just makes sense,” said Schneider, adding that knowing how to grow your own food
could be life-saving. Coun. Bruce McDonald highlighted that, similarly to how they promoted and created a syllabus for the rain gardens at Delta schools, a workshop and some official recommendations would help create a more concrete plan for growing these kinds of programs.
Schneider informed council that he would reach out soon with some ideas to follow up. Council will be pulling together suggestions from the presentation, as well as working with Schneider to put together options on moving Project Pickle further across the Delta school district. Project Pickle is a local educational program that aims to teach K-12 kids how to grow, nurture, harvest and prepare fresh produce, to create an understanding of nutritional health and an appreciation of smallscale farming, to understand the food economy and to have fun learning in an outdoor, hands-on environment. The program, which has been growing since 2012, uses underutilized school lands to bring the farming experience straight to Delta schools.

A Friday night of youth vandalism at Ladner Elementary has prompted Delta Police to issue a stern warning to parents. Last Friday night, Jan. 21 at around 10 p.m., DPD officers were dispatched to a report of 20-plus youth vandalizing the school. “When police attended, the youths were seen fleeing in droves,” said DPD in a post on their Facebook page. Police confirmed vandalism to the school, and the investigation is ongoing. “Parents – do you know what your kids are up to at night? Maybe now is a good time to sit down and have a chat with your teen, or one of our officers would be more than happy to for you.” Cathryn Tucker, communications director

maintenance teams and the Delta Police from more important matters. “We take vandalism to school property very seriously, and are working with the Delta Police to find ways to try to prevent further incidents of anti-social behaviour. Also, we would ask anyone that hears rumours or has information about the damage that has been done, or is planned to be done to our schools and community buildings, to report this to the Delta Police.”

Experience helps KinVillage battle fifth wave IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
As health care centre outbreaks continue to surge across the province, KinVillage in Tsawwassen has been able to avoid a major COVID outbreak thanks to enhanced protocol and safety measures by staff and residents. The fifth wave of the pandemic hit the South Court/Assisted Living area of KinVillage in midJanuary. On Friday, KinVillage, through its Facebook page said as of Jan. 21, there are five residents who previously tested positive for COVID-19 who will be out of isolation between Jan. 21 and 24. They will no longer be infectious after that period and are recovering well. One more resident was tested and was in isolation as of Jan 20 and by Jan. 28, there will be four remaining residents finishing their 10-day isolation period. Dan Levitt, KinVillage’s executive director said staff, along with Fraser Health, have worked
diligently to contain these latest cases, which did not prompt Fraser Health to declare an outbreak at the facility. “It shows the diligence that the staff, the family members and the people living there on our campus have taken to avoid, as much as possible, any exposure to the latest variant,” he said. “We know it is less serious in terms of symptoms, but it is highly transmissible and we have had cases of staff members contracting it and then they stay home. We have been really lucky that staff have not come to work. They have gotten tested, and isolated and the few cases, everyone isolated and we have been blessed with not having to declare an outbreak.” Fraser Health has declared outbreaks at KinVillage in the past, but Levitt said staff have learned a lot during those previous outbreaks. “I think what we have learned during the previous four waves is to be on top of it right away,” he said. “The team here that is leading the pandemic
response are right on top of it. We have been really fortunate with the safe guards in place around visitation. We have screening, testing, wearing masks and checking their health status when visitors come here. We are following the guidelines, staff are making a concerted effort. We have been fortunate. It could have gotten out of hand very easily.” This week the KinVillage Community Centre is reopening gradually, which Levitt said is very good news for staff, residents and the community as a whole. “This is such an important part of the Tsawwassen community to have the Community Centre open. It plays such a valuable role for seniors, for people who live on site, or live in the community. It really is a jewel for older people in the community and we really struggled when we were closed. We are hoping this is the last variant and back to our new normal and our spring and summer programs and welcoming seniors.”

Trying to solve a 20-year-old mystery IAN JACQUES

It is a 20-year-old mystery that a Delta woman is determined to solve. Over the weekend, Amanda Rennie posted in the Tsawwassen LOOP (NEW) Facebook group a photo and a few details about a ring that she found on a local trail 20 years ago. At the time of the discovery, she contacted the police and took out an ad in the paper seeking the owner, but to this day, there have been no takers. “I can still remember the day quite clearly even though it was about 20 years ago and I would have only been around 8 to 10 years old,” Rennie told the Optimist. “It was a sunny day and I

was running around the trails at Diefenbaker Park with one of my friends and caught a glimpse of something shiny in the dirt. When I stopped to look at it, I discovered the ring! “Since it was so long ago, my family and I can’t remember the exact ways that we tried to track down the owner. We have a vague recollection of making an ad and possi-
bly contacting the police, which is something I’m going to do again to see if there has been any file created for it.” She said on Sunday she was back visiting at her parents’ house in Tsawwassen and was going through one of her old jewellery boxes when she rediscovered the ring. “Right away, I wanted to try to find the owner again and this is when I created the Facebook post,” she said. “Just this past summer, I got married. Seeing the ring today [Sunday] made me really think about how special it must have been to someone back then and how much somebody out there must be missing it. It would be so great if we could find the owner after all of this time.”

Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES
S
outh Delta we have a problem. It’s not a new problem and it probably will always be a problem, but nevertheless, we have a problem that needs to be addressed. The problem I’m making reference to is a dog poop problem whereby dog owners don’t give a crap and let their dogs roam free, off-leash in our parks and school fields and when their dog has to go, instead of doing the responsible thing as a dog owner and pick up after their dog, decide to turn a blind eye and let the dog waste sit in the field. Recently, the Grade 3 class from South Park Elementary had enough of the “poop problem” on their grass field and wrote to Delta council. The students, led by teacher Yvette Kruckenberg, asked council to help get poop bag dispensers near the entrances to their school yard. The students have no problems sharing the field with the community and their four-legged friends, but are tired of going out to play and running through dog crap and then tracking it back into their school and classroom. The students also pointed out that signs were made up in the past to remind people of their transgressions, but those signs and reminders evidently have not worked. Within the letters, the students provided council with a map of where they thought the dispensers could be placed. Delta staff, however, nixed the idea telling the students in follow-up correspondence, that the dispensers may just encourage further use by dog owners, but did pledge to work with the Delta School District on more signage and awareness. I applaud these students for their efforts and for Ms. Kruckenberg to empower her students to take action. I’m a bit disappointed in the Delta staff response and lack of response from Delta council as well. Not one comment from council at the Jan. 10th meeting where this was presented, but in the bigger picture, the real shame and dissapointment is in our community for such despicable behavior. Pick up after your dog folks. As a dog owner it’s your responsibility.

aybe I’m an optimist (I guess that fits, given where this column runs), but I’m starting to see signals of spring. Just after summer turns to fall, we start seeing more and more fog. It’s usually about a month after the good weather ends. Lately, we’ve had a few foggy mornings. Hopefully that signals the coming of better weather. Fingers crossed. Then, a friend of mine was complaining about allergies. With spring comes allergy symptoms. While I sympathize with his plight, I had to smile a bit. Spring is coming. We had out winter hit at Christmas, where it belongs. I don’t care what the groundhog says next week, winter is done on this side of the country, and that means one thing… Spring Clean-up. It’s back, and just in time. I’ve got a lot of stuff to get rid of. At least that’s what my wife keeps telling me.
Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN
For the past two years, the stuff that would usually end up on the curb in late March has been cluttering up my garage, my office and my house. We took advantage of the big item pick-up the City of Delta used to replace Spring Clean-up last summer, but it just wasn’t the same. As the weather gets nicer and we emerge from our COVID hibernation, we have something to look forward to. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t come back at all, but the powers that be decided
differently. Thank goodness. The greatest recycling event of the year is planned for the last week of March, and has the potential to be the most active in a long time. I can’t be the only one with a pile of stuff to get rid of. We’ve lived with things that might have been tossed already if Spring Clean-up hadn’t been cancelled. Oh, the treasures that will find a new home. It’s like Halloween for the hoarders, minus any tricks. This would be a great start to getting back to what life was like a couple years ago. It would be great to see the Tour de Delta back as well, which is being reviewed. Given the uncertainty and the lead-time required to plan bigger events, it may take a while for some of our usual activities to align with the gradual removal of restrictions. In the meantime, the curbside adventures will have to suffice. It’s a pretty good start.

Use the money to contribute to Delta Editor: I enjoyed reading your editorial regarding ‘Tour de Delta’, (Optimist, Jan. 20), although it did raise my blood pressure a little. I agree that we should let this operation keep pedalling down the road and let somebody else pick up the tab. $300,000? You’ve got to be kidding! Years ago, we operated a B&B, and were involved in forming an organization called ‘Tourism Delta”. This organization included many of the accommodation providers (B&B’s, hotels, etc.), plus restaurants and other tourist attractions in the area. Unfortunately, they had to compete with Delta’s Chamber of Commerce,
who were supposed to be handling tourism matters, but were failing miserably. At that time, Tourism Delta was pleading with council for enough money to help finance the tourism information booths. The new ‘Tour de Delta’ was also asking for money, looking for the same amount, which at that time was $30,000. The main problem we (tourism industry) had with this, was the fact that Tour de Delta did nothing to contribute to the area. None of the participants or the organizers stayed at Delta accommodations. None even stayed for a meal at local restaurants. We heard arguments like, “But it brings in lots of people, lots of specta-
tors”. The problem was, none of them stayed even long enough to spend some money on meals, or local goods. To add insult to injury, they (Tour de Delta) was asking all the businesses to contribute to the prize money for their race, and accommodation providers to ‘billet’ the cyclers for free, for the duration. Needless to say, nobody in the Tourism industry was very pleased with this bicycle race that contributed nothing to the economy, yet required Delta council and Delta businesses to finance them. So, I agree, let’s use that money for something that will contribute to Delta. Ian Kent

We can get more bang for our buck Editor: I appreciated Sandor Gyarmati’s article outlining the costs of Tour de Delta (Optimist, Jan. 20). I was shocked to read that almost a quarter million dollars are earmarked from our Delta City budget for the Tour in 2022. Contrast that with the Ladner Bandfest, of which I am a proud founding member, which asks the city for only a grant to cover the show stage, plus gracious assistance with Memorial Park tidy-up, and the loan of
two rooms, tables, and chairs. Like the bike races, Bandfest is free and open to the public, and draws a similar sized audience into Memorial Park throughout the weekend (mark your calendars for Bandfest June 4 to 5, 2022). It therefore draws revenue into Ladner similar to the Tour de Delta, clearly evident when the 18 participating bands, totalling 600 musicians, frequent the cafes, pubs and shops over the weekend. Significantly, the
Ladner Bandfest is known and loved provincially and internationally, as is the Tour de Delta, so there are many comparisons in their own fields of endeavour. Don’t get me wrong – my wife and I love the Tour de Delta Criterion Races. We always bring friends and book a front row seat at a café, but when considering “bang for our buck,” there might be better ways to spend the Delta taxpayers’ money than $236k for one event. The following letter was sent to Steven Guilbeault, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy with a copy to Delta Optimist As a Canadian citizen for some 88 years, I am, along with my daughter, extremely concerned that you would place us and our community in such a dangerous and life threatening situation by even
considering the Tillbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project along with the Tilbury Marine Jetty Project. Placing these two proposals, knowing that nowhere else in the world would they be placed so close to people or on such a salmon producing estuary like the Fraser River, completely ignores the lives of people and their
environment and should not be allowed now or in the future. Any economic gain would not be worth the gamble and I urge you not to approve these two Tilbury proposals. I wish to leave this world knowing that my daughter and the community she lives in are safe and secure. Douglas George Massey

Fees now in effect at Deltaowned EV charging stations Charges went into effect on Jan. 15 MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The days of having a free EV charge in Delta are officially over. Fees are in effect at all city-owned electric vehicle charging stations in a cost recovery effort. Similar to other municipalities, the fee structure sees Level 2 stations charge $2 per hour for the first two hours and $5 per hour after that. While Delta currently does not have Level 3 stations, those would have an $8 per hour fee for 25 kW and $16 per hour for 50 kW. The fee structure and its implementation was approved at a council meeting back in early December. A staff report noted
Delta’s Level 2 charging stations are popular. From Jan. 1 through Nov. 15 2021, there were 18,774 charging sessions for all charging stations combined. The stations at the North Delta Arts Centre are the busiest. The DC Fast Charge station at South Delta Recreation Centre is owned and operated by BC Hydro. The report noted the city will have installed 10 new dual-point charging stations in the past year that triples the operational cost of Delta’s charging stations compared to 2020 costs. At an average use of six hours per day, it is expected that the capital costs for installing a Level 2 charging station could be recovered in approximately four-to-five years
at a rate of $2 per hour and accounting for operating costs. Last month, the city submitted a funding application for a Level 3 station at the George Mackie Library in North Delta. That application also included 20 more Level 2 stations that would be installed at civic facilities in Tsawwassen, Ladner, Tilbury and North Delta. If the funding application is successful, the stations would be installed sometime this year. As far as the two-hour time limit by Delta, the report notes other municipalities have found that charging fees encourages users to abide by posted limits and make the stations available for others to use in a timely fashion. Roberts Bank container terminal expansion application process restarts CHUCK CHIANG
B u s i n e s s i n Va n c o u ve r
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s (VFPA) bid to expand Roberts Bank’s container cargo handling capacity is back on track after it responded to the federal environment ministry’s order to produce more information on how the port plans to reduce the project’s impact on wildlife habitat and local communities. Ottawa will now invite public comment (until Feb. 13) on the port authority’s findings and Impact Assessment Agency of Canada’s (IAAC) newly released “potential conditions” for approving the $3.5 billion Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project (RBT2). In a statement, VFPA Vice-President of Infrastructure Cliff Stewart said the response is a major step forward for a project sorely needed to address the port’s container cargo capacity crunch. The project has been mired in a decade-long environmental assessment process and faces vocal opposition from municipal governments in Richmond and Delta, as well as environmentalists, First Nations communities and even Roberts Bank’s current containerterminal tenant, GCT Global Container Terminals Inc. It would double the size of the existing 85-hectare container facility by landfill and add an estimated 2.4 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) to the Port of Vancouver’s container handling capacity. But the proposed expansion could affect up to 177 hectares of the sensitive Fraser River estuary – which opponents say would be irreparably damaged as a habitat for migrating birds and sea

A bid to expand Roberts Bank’s container cargo handling capacity is back on track. creatures like killer whales. Concerns have also been raised about the project’s effect on human health and First Nations communities’ access to the Delta coastline for maintaining their traditional lifestyle. Meanwhile, GCT – which operates Roberts Bank’s GCT Deltaport container terminal – has proposed a rival expansion project (Berth 4 or DP4) that the operator argues is more “rightsized” in minimizing environmental impact while fulfilling future capacity demands at a lower cost. GCT and the VFPA have been locked in legal dispute over the two projects. The VFPA, in its response to the environment ministry, updated its plan on how to mitigate RBT2’s environmental impact by tripling its original commitment for habitat creation to 86 hectares for species like chinook salmon and dungeness crab. That, the port authority says, is 22 hectares more “than
what is required to counterbalance the effects of the project that would remain after implementation of avoidance and reduction measures.” The port authority also updated RBT2’s economic impact estimates, which include $1.6 billion in labour income, $519 million in tax revenue and $2.3 billion in GDP during the construction phase alone. Once RBT2 is operational, the port projects an annual GDP contribution of $3 billion to the Canadian economy. The project’s cost has been estimated at between $2 billion and $3.5 billion. Both GCT and community opponents remain skeptical of VFPA’s response. GCT Canada vice-president of public affairs Marko Dekovic said the company will submit a comment to the IAAC, reaffirming the operator’s opposition to RBT2. Dekovic repeated GCT’s claim that
DP4 would be a better fit for Canada’s container cargo needs projections, adding that the recent flooding-driven bottlenecks were created in other links in the supply chain – and not in the existing container terminal capacity itself. Dekovic also questioned RBT2’s uncertain cost – including the need to secure another operator for the new terminal. The VFPA has stated it wants a different container terminal operator at RBT2 to create competitive pricing and improve costs incurred by vessels looking to dock at Roberts Bank. “Why would the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority continue pushing for a decades-old outmoded megaproject that would be publicly funded and environmentally devastating instead?” Dekovic said. “The port should be stepping back, focusing on its core mandate, and allowing the private sector to handle this private-sector matter.” Meanwhile, Roger Emsley, executive director of the Against Port Expansion Community Group, said in an email that he is especially disappointed in the IAAC’s draft conditions for approving Terminal 2 – which include continued engagements with local stakeholders and annual reports to monitor the project’s environmental promises and performances. “What you may not be aware of is just how deficient are the draft conditions,” Emsley said. “The IAAC-developed draft conditions really are a joke. Basically, the VFPA is required to consult, monitor, mitigate, follow-up and report. There is no stopping or changing the project – even if bird populations show declines and/or ultimately go extinct.”

Delta Police praise work of police dog unit They found fleeing drunk drivers, missing high-risk youth and stopped determined armed suspects – responding to a total of 1,520 calls for service in 2021. Delta’s three police dog and handler pairs, who are part of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service, recently looked back at the past year. As part of an integrated unit, their scope of operations goes beyond Delta, and they, along with the 45 other dog and handler pairs, serve nearly two million Metro Vancouver citizens. Throughout 2021 the Integrated LMD Police Dog Service team responded to 192 calls for service in Delta. Break and Enters were the most common call type, while assaults and searching for weapons were also frequent reasons why the dog teams
were called by front line officers. Some of the most satisfying work for dogs and handlers is when they can successfully locate missing suspects and missing persons. The three Delta dog-handler pairs were successful in doing so more than 150 times in 2021. This past year was the debut for the team of Const. Sarb Singh and his new dog Laska. “There are many occasions where these dogs have made a critical difference in our work. For example, last year Singh and Laska attended a collision in Delta, where the driver was fleeing the scene on foot,” explains Sup. Guy Leeson. “They caught up to the suspect, and after noting symptoms of impairment, the suspect was taken into custody without issue.” In another incident Singh and Laska came to the aid of a fellow
officer who was involved in a struggle against a suspect actively fighting and fleeing from police. The suspect had assaulted the officer and also had presented a knife. Unfortunately use of force tools, including a Taser and OC spray, had not yet resolved the situation. Laska successfully controlled the suspect, despite being hit at with keys. Due to Laska’s tenacity, the suspect was taken into police custody. “Our handlers and their dogs are incredibly dedicated, and they are such a fantastic resource for our community,” says Leeson. “For example, Const. Chris Cottrill and his dog Garner had a great success here in Delta last year where they were able to successfully track a youth who was suicidal.” In another file Const. Carriere and his police
dog Libby assisted on a robbery with weapon file where a Taser was used by the suspect. While Carriere located and apprehended the suspect, Libby located the outstanding Taser and stolen property that was used in the commission of the offence. DPD is fortunate to have other dog and handler pairs, in addition to these traditional multi-profile dogs. The DPD also has two dogs trained to detect firearms and drugs, as well as a Victim Service Dog. In 2021 Delta Police also had three officers participating in a development program, volunteering as quarries, to raise puppies who would be future police dogs. -Submitted by Delta Police DELTA POLICE PHOTO

SDMHA alumni back on home ice for charity MARK BOOTH

Nearly 80 former South Delta Minor Hockey Association players will be back on “home” ice this weekend looking to score big for the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation (DHCHF) The inaugural South Delta Minor Hockey Charity Event will see six alumni teams hit the ice this Saturday in three separate games at the Ladner Leisure Centre starting at 1:25 p.m. Through sponsorships, more than $11,000 has already been raised with all proceeds going to the DHCHF and SDMHA. The event was the idea of SDMHA alumni Matt Ryan. It didn’t take long for the association and City of Delta to come onboard. There is even a hometown flavor in the beer garden with Four Winds Brewery providing the post-game beverages. “I thought of it after always seeing guys I used to play with on different beer league teams. We would skate to centre ice and ask how things were going,” explained Ryan. “After doing it a bunch of times I thought this would

day-long tournament with teams playing a number of mini-games against each other. However, some stick handling was required to work around the
current COVID-19 health restrictions which resulted in three “event” games instead. Ryan even spent some time at his parents place going through some old Optimist articles on his former minor hockey teams to come up with more players that might be interested in participating. The teams will mostly feature players in their 30s to early 50s. They have also been matched up on potential skill level, with one team featuring a number of former major junior players. Among the number of sponsors steeping up is local realtor Allison Steen. “Her dad Bill Steen was a huge minor hockey guy in the community,” added Ryan. “She heard about this and called me directly to sponsor as a tribute to her dad. I’ve been hearing a lot of stuff like that, which is super neat.” Games at 2:55 p.m. and 4:25 p.m. round out Saturday’s schedule. A $20 family admission includes entry into a raffle that features an autographed Thatcher Demko jersey among a number of prizes.

Having been involved in a swim-a-thon before, Carter came up with the idea of a puck-a-thon, which involved shooting 100 pucks a day into his backyard net leading up to Christmas. He then decided to take the challenge further and raise money for Delta KidSport. Among those he hit up for pledges was Brian Losse, his Tsawwassen Minor Baseball coach. Losse said he would donate $40 if Carter upped the daily shot total to 114. The number was in tribute to his son Kyle, a promising baseball player who tragically passed away in 2018. Kyle’s favourite number happened to be 14.
South Delta Minor Hockey player Carter DeWolff’s puck-a-thon raised $500 for Delta KidSport. Carter took his daily commitment seriously, even to the point of 11 p.m. puck shooting when his family was late arriv-
ing home from a holiday outing. The recent cold snap allowed him to do it some days at Deas Island
Regional Park where there was enough frozen water to play pond hockey. In total, he shot 2,052 pucks.

Summer camp program for children with disabilities hosting Q&A tonight DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
In preparation for their applications opening next month, the Delta Life Skills Society (DLSS) is hosting a virtual Q&A session for families of children with disabilities interested in enrolling in their summer camp program. Focused on developing life skills – some of which include cooking, handling money and using transit – and independence through recreational fun, their six-week camp for six to 20-year-olds is unique because of the one-toone support they offer to those participating. “Our philosophy is every child, regardless of their abilities, deserves the right to have a fun summer ... These children are in our community, and we want to be an inclusive community and have these children know that they are supported and that there are opportunities for them,” says Carey Dingsdale, program director at DLSS. Unfortunately, the pandemic has brought its own specific challenges for these families to face, from financial instability to a breakdown of their usual support systems. With this in mind, it’s been especially important to the non-profit to continue running the camp through the pandemic and to work through the challenges that COVID-19 has brought the organization, itself. In 2020, the camp only had 12 participants, which is significantly lower than their usual 35 to 50. “Pre-COVID, we could do fundraisers – we could do a big gala, or we could do pub nights – and we would have families that would come ... So, you go from 40 down to 12 ... [and all] those people that would be bringing in their contacts and saying ‘hey, come support what my child is doing this summer’, we didn’t have that,” explains Dingsdale. However, during Christmas, they were able
The Delta Life Skills Society is hosting a Q&A session tonight at 7 p.m. for families of children with disabilities interested in having their 6 to 20-year old attend their sixweek summer camp program this year. to hold a successful raffle in partnership with local businesses, she says, and the society intends to continue building relationships with community partners to keep this camp going. During non-pandemic times, the camp would involve day trips like visiting Science World, Playland and the Vancouver Aquarium, but mask and vaccination policies pushed them last year to keeping their activities outdoors. The cost of sending an individual child to camp costs around $7,000, between hiring trained staff, renting facilities and paying for local excursions, but the camp’s fee for each child is around $1,500, explains Dingsdale. Families are also asked to fundraise or
donate approximately $800 between the February annual general meetings, from February to February, to go towards their costs of the camp. This year, they’re not sure where the pandemic will be at by the time camp starts in July, which will affect the kinds of day trips or activities they will run. Following this Q&A scheduled for tonight (Jan. 27) at 7 p.m., the non-profit organization will hold their annual general meeting on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m., where attendance will be mandatory for applicant families. If you’re interested in registering for their Q&A session, email programdirector@deltalifeskills.net, and to register for their AGM, email membership@deltalifeskills.net.

Many of the South Delta Guild artists are regular contributors to the art displayed at Granville Island with the Federation of Canadian Artists. A bar has been set by their professionalism which our small gallery strives to emulate and according to many, has met
the challenge. The latest show opened on Jan. 21 and has works by 34 artists displaying 92 paintings with landscapes, abstract art and contemporary art using acrylics, oil and watercolor. The creative talents of our hanging crew display them to their best advantage. From Friday to Sunday the public can follow a path through the gallery and enjoy this superlative show. Artist Lennart Osterlind has created a seascape entitled “Stormy Weather at Sea” in
acrylic depicting a ship coping with raging wind and rollicking waves – a story known by many on our rocky, windswept coast. There are many lovely abstracts worth more than a passing glance – really lovely images which you shouldn’t miss. The Guild also features workshops. Reha Sakar will be helping some of our artists to improve their watercolors by developing more confidence through new learning experiences with professional secrets of the trade. What could be more fun than
joining a group such as this? Joining the Guild lets you sit in on Zoom meetings held on the first Monday of each month with each session ending with a demo by a local B.C. artist. If you are thinking ahead in February, March Madness is getting ready to launch. On Saturday, Feb. 26, some members of the Fibre Art Group will be on hand between 1 and 3 p.m. to show you some new and creative ways to use fabric in art for those who like to experiment. The demo will feature work by Deborah Zibrik, show-
ing how she creates fantastical bugs. More on this event coming next month, with perhaps a mad tea party in the works. If you are an artist, you might want to enter the upcoming Oil and Water show. This is an international juried exhibition of two-dimensional art. The submission deadline is April 30. The full prospectus may be viewed at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com. Many prizes are available. Gallery 1710 is located by the curling rink at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

The rippling, connecting and sustainable effects of supporting local businesses Three South Delta business leaders weigh in on why you should shop local DANI PENALOZA
W
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
hen asked why it’s important to shop locally – particularly during the pandemic – the resounding sentiment among three of South Delta’s business leaders was, use it or lose it. With all the challenges that the local business community has faced, and continues to face, it’s vital that local residents keep their hard-earned money circulating within our community, explains the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association’s executive director, Michelle Barlow. “Continuing restrictions, closures, reduced capacity and supply chain issues present barriers that are difficult to overcome and, unfortunately, some
have had to make the difficult decision to close their doors,” said Barlow. “If we don’t want to lose any more local businesses, we must choose to spend our dollars locally.” And though we do have a wide range of specialty stores offering brilliant goods and services, it’s important to remember that our local businesses offer much more to our community than just those things, added Delta Chamber of Commerce’s executive director, Jill McKnight. “Businesses within our community, small businesses particularly, are paramount in shaping the fabric of our community,” said McKnight. “They provide places to gather and connect with others, they employ people from within our community, allowing our residents to live, work and play within their neighbourhoods.”
Local businesses also offer a sense of connectedness and belonging. When you shop local consistently, you have the opportunity to build relationships with the merchants and the shoppers there, says Ladner Business Association president, Janice LawlorCooper. “There is a ripple effect every time we shop, and when we shop locally, the positive impacts start to ripple through your local community, touching the lives of your friends, family and neighbours,” said Janice LawlorCooper. The pandemic has pushed businesses to adapt how they offer their goods and services, like launching online stores, offering curbside pickup, complimentary shipping and even free delivery, explains McKnight. These features not only contribute

to public safety, but also to the shopper’s convenience. However, not everything you need or want will always be locally available, and in those situations, it’s always worth asking around at your local shops before taking your business elsewhere, suggests McKnight. But supporting local businesses goes beyond just financial interactions, so if you can’t find the item or service you’re looking for at a local shop, there are other ways to boost them up. Recommending their business to a friend or family member, writing them a positive review, commenting on or sharing their social media posts, showing up to their events or purchasing a gift card for someone else to discover the store’s magic, are just some other ways to help out, says McKnight.

An apology distaste culture
It’s almost like we are allergic to repentance and forgiveness. Think about it? When was the last time someone came to you and simply said “I was wrong, please forgive me?” Recently I received an apology from someone in our church, the email began with, “I might have been a little harsh... I had a bad week…” In later communication, the person referenced their apology. I was left with a question…“When did they apologize?” When they said “I might have…” followed by an excuse? I’m sorry but that is no apology. In today’s society these are the phrases we use to apologize: “I’m sorry if I hurt you, but..” or “I know I shouldn’t have done that, but you shouldn’t have…” or “I wouldn’t have done that if you…” These are not apologies. This is important because when we apologize, we align ourselves with God’s truth. 1 John 1:8-10, it says, “If we

LIFE CHURCH
say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” In other words, forgiveness is available, but it does require asking for forgiveness without excuses and then a willingness to forgive. Our communities have seen more broken relationships over the last two years than ever before because of disagreements over politics and COVID. We counsel
broken families and we often ask ourselves, “Why don’t they just ask for forgiveness?” Why is there a refusal to repent? In Proverbs 28:13. God says, “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” Let’s run to mercy and to true repentance. So we need to change our understanding of an apology. The Peacemaker by Ken Sande, is an excellent book to read and will help you change your excuses into an apology. Repentance is freedom! You are not responsible for the other individual’s response or forgiveness. They may never forgive you, but when you have done your part in navigating what true repentance looks like, you have followed the way of God. That’s a good thing. My hope is that your broken relationships will be restored because of your actions. It’s worth it. They are worth it.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
Serving good food for thought at KinVillage
Prior to COVID-19, our lives were often consumed with getting together with family and friends, involving food and drinks. Our safe bubble consists of who we live with, often gathering together
at dinner time over a freshly prepared homemade meal to talk about our day. As we look ahead to the in-person world to further reopen, this is especially meaningful for special occasions, celebrating birthdays and
anniversaries. But for people living with dysphagia that makes it difficult to eat and drink, there are barriers to joining in on the ritual of eating. In order to make meals a more sociable and palatable

experience, food is texture modified and drinks are thickened to help with safe swallowing. It is crucial for safety that the food and drinks are prepared to proper consistency based on the diet order. Older adults sometimes experience losses of taste and smell related to the ageing process, disease state, medication, surgery, or environmental exposure. The deficit in these senses may impact the enjoyment and comfort of eating, therefore it is imperative that textured menu items receive the same attention to detail as it relates to quality, flavour, aromas, plate presentation, and choices. Modified texture diets have been long standing traditional ways of providing meal service
in care homes often with scoops of sometimes unrecognizable food. The meal is always nutritionally balanced and safe as food processing has modified the texture to reduce the risk of choking. Unfortunately, the plate is visually unappealing. For KinVillage, creating visually appealing meals that taste great for those who require texture modified diets has resulted in shaping and re-forming the textured food into a form the resembles the original food item. This passion for living life to the fullest is about feeding the whole persons, body and soul. In December, KinVillage received thrilling news of being awarded a $15,000 grant to consider how to make such meal services sustainable
in order to upgrade the dining experience for seniors. As a first step, a textured modified turkey was served with mashed potatoes, vegetables and cranberry sauce. The reactions on the faces of the residents were astonishing as were their comments of joy and the empty plate at the end of their meal told the cooks they were onto something. The care staff who assisted with feeding felt a sense of affirmation that an investment was made into the dietary needs of those whose dignity at meals times in paramount. A pureed turkey dinner that looks like an actual piece of turkey with cranberry sauce and chunks of vegetables on the side - food for thought?

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
What needs protection in your garden this winter KRISTIN CROUCH
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Winter is here and it’s time to think about protecting your plants in the garden. One easy way to protect your plants from winter cold is to use leaves around them to help protect the root system. Save your leaves in the fall and gently place them around the base of tender plants for protection. Use leaves as a mulch on raised beds. Not only will the leaf cover prevent soil loss, it also adds nutrients to the soil and protects your plants. If you don’t have leaves there are alternatives for winter protection. Many gardeners place plastic nursery pots or cloches over
prized plants for protection. Some gardeners use evergreen boughs over the garden as a layer of insulation against the cold. To help protect plants in raised beds or in ground gardens I recommend heavy weight floating row covers. Place the covers over your plants and use rocks or bricks to hold them in place. Be sure to allow some extra fabric over the plants as they grow although most winter crops grow very slowly. Floating row covers can be found at most garden centres. The best insulation you can hope for is snowfall. Snow acts like a blanket over the garden adding a protective layer before extreme cold arrives. Here the snow arrived before our
temperatures dipped to -13C. If it had been the other way around I’m sure we would have plant loss. Although snow is beneficial for the garden it’s best to gently remove it from evergreens so branches don’t break under the weight. How do you know which plants need protection? We live in zone 8a so plants from zones 8-10 or higher will need to either come inside or be protected. For example, some banana trees are not hardy in our climate and benefit from being wrapped to protect the crown of the plant. Rosemary is only hardy to zone 8, so it’s right on the borderline of hardiness. I usually bring my rosemary plants close to the house if they are in
containers or cover the plants that are planted in the ground with a floating row cover. If you have tender plants in containers they should be brought inside a garage or shed for the shortterm until temperatures
are safe for them to go outside again. If you can’t move your containers wrap them in burlap to not only protect the plants but the containers as well. Many containers are subject to cracking from winter cold.
Most winter damage will not show up until early March, so don’t be too hasty to discard plants once winter is over. Plants may take a bit longer to recover from our low winter temperatures.

Three-time Stanley Cup champion spent some time here while coaching with WHL Giants MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was just like old times for Brent Seabrook. He grabbed a bite to eat with his buddies at the Tsawwassen White Spot and picked up his favourite sandwich at Ozzie’s Deli. He even slept in his childhood bedroom at his parents’ home. The three-time Stanley Cup champion and former star defenseman with the Chicago Blackhawks was back in his hometown earlier this month as a volunteer assistant coach with the Vancouver Giants. The Western Hockey League club approached Seabrook to help fill a void when head coach Michael Dyck joined Team Canada for the World Junior Championships. His coaching duties officially concluded when the Giants played in Kelowna which brought Seabrook back to the city he now resides in with his wife and young family. “There are a lot of memories that flood back every time I come here. It’s different that I’m now 36, have three kids and I’m married, yet I have been living in the bed I grew up in at my parents’ house. The team even had a New Year’s Eve curfew for 11 p.m. and I was home for it since there’s not much going on these days,” laughed Seabrook. “It means the world to me coming home. It’s where I got my start. It’s where I grew up. It will always be home and you get that weird sort of feeling when driving back here. It’s changed quite a bit over the years, but Tsawwassen is always home.” Seabrook’s return to the Ladner Leisure Centre, the
Giants’ home practice facility, marked his first time back on home ice since he helped the Delta Ice Hawks win their first-ever league championship back in 2001 when he was just 15. The South Delta Minor Hockey alumni went on to enjoy a stellar WHL career with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and was selected 14th overall by Chicago in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Fifteen decorated NHL seasons with the Blackhawks followed, highlighted by Stanley Cup wins in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Each time Seabrook’s designated day with the cup was spent in his hometown and included a mini-parade. “It’s definitely the people in the community you want to share it with. People you spend time with and people who helped me out with my career,” continued Seabrook who was forced to step away from the game due to lingering injuries last March. “That’s the cool thing about the Stanley Cup is you get a day with it and you bring it home and go around and show it up. I brought it to Delta Hospital. The police station and fire hall. Just little things like that. I think as hockey players there is an obligation a little bit to share it and show people. The satisfaction for me is the look on people’s faces when they get to see it and touch it.”

Three-time Stanley Cup champion and the pride of Tsawwassen Brent Seabrook spent some time back home working as a volunteer assistant coach with the Vancouver Giants. Canucks, Seabrook’s favourite team growing up. “It was always a tough situation. I could never go out with my buddies and I never wanted to go see my family when I was here. I stayed away because it was ‘war’ the next day,” Seabrook recalled. “I knew it was going to be a tough game. We played them 19 times in the playoffs in those three years and probably 12 more times in the regular season so like 31 times altogether. “It was a regular season
game and guys were still out for blood. It was fun and it was really cool. Unfortunately me and my friends we grew up as Canucks fans and it was hard to peel them away. I think I had Seabrook supporters but they were always Canucks fans.”

Tsawwassen visiting his family. “I have really enjoyed my experience. I can’t thank the organization enough. I had a lot of fun and I have enjoyed working with the kids and being out here and teaching them some of the stuff I know,” Seabrook added. “A couple of guys came up to me the other day and I guess they were watching my clips to see what I was saying was actually what I did when I played. We had some fun with that. It’s a great group of players and a good team.”

Sun Devils sweep Pacers in annual hoop rivalry games MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
For about five minutes it looked like the Delta Pacers just might continue their recent dominance of their senior boys basketball cross-town rivalry. Then the South Delta Sun Devils came to life. The hosts erased an early 9-0 deficit with a 21-4 run of their own en route to a 78-54 victory in the Stebbings Murray Cup rivalry game played last Thursday. The annual tilt, named after the Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductees and longtime hoop coaches Bob Stebbings and Neil Murray, resumed after a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, but was played in front of no spectators due to the current COVID19 public health orders. “The guys weren’t doing their defensive rotations and came out a little flat,” said SDSS head coach Bryan Lopez, on his team’s slow start. “We made some adjustments on defence and the guys were able to pick up on that, which was great to see.” South Delta took a 25-20 lead into halftime and pulled away in the final 10 minutes thanks to a 13-2 run to
Following a one year pause due to COVID-19, the annual rivalry games between the Delta Pacers and South Delta Sun Devils senior teams resumed last Thursday in front of no spectators. The host Sun Devils won both games. start the fourth quarter. Ty Willemsen led the winners with 25 points. Eliot Loveless added 22. Kai Bohmert had a game-high 27 for the Pacers. Both teams now turn their attention back to league play with South Delta looking to improve on its 1-2 record in the South Fraser 4A Southwest Division with games coming up
against Sullivan Heights, Panorama Ridge and Semiahmoo. The Pacers sit at 1-3 in the AAA Sur-Del League. In the senior girls match-up for the Brasnett/Lawrence Cup, the Sun Devils cruised to their first win over the Delta Pacers in five years. The outcome was hardly a surprise as the Sun Devils are enjoying their best season in a number of years and
sit among the top 10 teams in the province at the AAAA level. The Pacers are coming off a historic 2020 season that culminated at the B.C. AAA Championships. However, volunteer parent coach Chris Ainge has no returning players from that team, due to the pandemic pause, as the program looks to rebuild towards another run.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
Kristin was a radiant beam of light, energy and joy. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her close knit family both in BC and the Prairies, pursuing her travel passion with friends and family and spoiling her three nieces. She will be forever cherished and missed by her family, friends and all who had the good fortune and grace to come into contact with her. There will be a celebration of life at a later date when we can safely gather. In lieu of flowers, donations can kindly be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. SWENSON, Geraldine (nee Eddy) September 21, 1925 - January 19, 2022 The family of Gerry Swenson is saddened to announce the passing of our much-loved Mom, Grandma, and friend at the age of 96. Gerry was a devoted mother to Jill (Gerry), Rod, and Margot, grandmother to Amber (Jay), Brittany, Holley (Cory), Joel, Hillary (Dan), and Shannon, as well as great grandmother to Isabelle, Emmett, Caleb, and Cole. She was predeceased by her beloved son Rick (1988), husband Paul (1998) and sister Dawn. Gerry was born and schooled in New Westminster, working at Royal City Cannery to put herself through university. She graduated from UBC in 1947 with a Home Economics teaching degree. During this time, she met her husband Paul at an East Delta Hall dance. They were married in 1950 and set up home on the Westham Island farmstead. Mom took to the farm family way of life easily, and their 4 children quickly arrived in less than 5 years. Gerry was a substitute teacher at Delta Secondary School, and an avid knitter, sewer, gardener, and volunteer. She was a member and trustee of the Delta Museum and a devoted lifetime member of the Kinettes and K40 Clubs. Her passion was the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, where she was a Lifetime Member and volunteer for over 45 years. Gerry made lots of lasting friendships and great memories during her volunteering days. Vacations spent at the family beach cabin in Pt. Roberts and condo in Kauai were among Gerry and Paul’s favourite pastimes. They traveled the world extensively and in later years, by cruise ship. Mom loved to cruise! Gerry was very lucky to have spent 70+ years in her own home on Westham Island. Most recently, her hobbies included watching Downton Abbey and Hallmark movies, checking on her hummingbirds, and scanning the obituaries to see if she was in there!
WHITTINGHAM, Gordon Earl January 9, 2022 Gordon passed away peacefully at Surrey Memorial Hospital on Sunday, January 9, 2022, surrounded by family members. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Willa (Betty); his three children Mark, Wendy (Varley), Miles and their spouses Geraldine, Ron, Patricia; as well as four adorable grandchildren Michael, Derek, Avery and Eden; plus over thirty nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his older brothers Garvie Rae and Kenn Whittingham and their spouses Millie and Elisabeth. Gordon was born and raised in Winnipeg. He worked for Moore Business Forms for 39 years, first in Winnipeg before being transferred to Vancouver. A long−time resident of Tsawwassen since 1966, Gordon was active in his community. He coached both hockey and baseball for several years. He was also a scout leader for over 15 years. Gordon enjoyed travelling, camping and being outdoors. He was a loving father and proud grandfather who was always available for his children and grandchildren. In his 31−year retirement, Gordon spent many happy hours puttering around in his tool shed building things. His favourite expression was, "I had one of those, but the wheels fell off." At 91 years old, Gordon lived a long and good life. Although we are saddened by his loss, and he will be dearly missed, we are grateful that he was always there for us. In lieu of a service, a private family gathering will take place. We love you, Dad. Rest in peace.
People will remember Gerry for her witty sense of humour, positive yet feisty attitude, and her cute, impish grin. She endured numerous tragedies and challenges over the years, and set a great example with her courage and strength. Her greatest joys were her family, hummingbirds, kitties and chocolate. Family dinners will never be the same without Grandma! We wish to thank the wonderful staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice for their care of Mom these past 3 weeks. As per Gerry’s request, a small family celebration is planned for a later date. Should you wish to remember Gerry, please consider making a donation to Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society or the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

RIDLEY, Teresa Louise June 15, 1925 - January 1, 2022 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Teresa Ridley on January 1, 2022. Teresa was predeceased by her husband Fred Ridley on February 14, 2014 and is survived by her brother Bernard (Harriott); sister Margaret (Harriott) and her eight children; Paul, Nikki (Wiebe), Chris, Carey, Mark, Kevin, Katherine, and Trish (Wagner). Her legacy also included 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy. Teresa, (or G-Ma as her grandkids liked to call her) spent the last few years, with her eldest granddaughter, entertaining fans on Instagram with her quick wit and fabulous style. Teresa met her husband Fred Ridley on a dance floor in Newcastle where they fell in love, married, and continued to dance their way through life. They immigrated to Vancouver in 1951 from Whitley Bay, England where they began raising their growing family. The Ridley’s moved to Richmond in 1967 where they lived for 25 years before finally settling in South Surrey. Teresa understood the value of family and devoted her life to her children, extended family, and wonderful friends. There was always an extra seat at the table for anyone in need of a Sunday dinner. She had a quiet disposition and was a devout Catholic which helped her live a full and beautiful life. She will be deeply missed, and we feel at peace knowing she is now dancing again, with her husband and soulmate Fred. There will be a service at the Good Shepard Church in White Rock on February 14th, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. (2250-150th St., Surrey). All are welcome! (Plenty of room to keep covid restrictions). This service will also be live streamed for those who are unable to attend. A celebration of life will be announced later in the spring.
