Bursary honouring beloved South Delta birder receives over $60,000 in donations DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

The Tom Bearss Bursary has received a total of $64,444 to support students specializing in environmental and nature studies at the University of British Columbia, thanks to a team effort between the Delta Naturalists Society (DNS) and Bearss’ family and friends. And what better way to honour the beloved nature enthusiast, birder and overall communitycreator than to continue his legacy through a bursary dedicated to students pursuing careers in areas Bearss cared deeply about. That was the idea when the DNS set the goal nearly two years ago of raising $50,000 for a bursary in their longtime president’s name. “We are very satisfied, very pleased. The bursary honours Tom, who was our effervescent president for over a decade, but it also resonates with a couple of the principles of the Delta Naturalists

– notably, environmental education and supporting youth,” says Syd Barber current DNS president. Originally established in 2020 by the DNS, the bursary has now been endowed in perpetuity, meaning it is self-sustaining. The bursary has already supported four undergraduate students at UBC, and it will continue to do so every fall semester for future Bachelor of Science Degree recipients specializing in environmental sciences, marine biology, conservation biology, ecology and environmental biology or natural resources conservation. Tom’s son Scott Bearss says that, though there was certainly a concentrated effort between DNS and his own family and friends to bring in the bursary’s funds, his father’s lifetime of building connections and friendships everywhere he went also allowed for an overwhelming response to the initiative.

“It’s amazing what you can do as one individual with support from other people, and if you bring a light heart – a jovial heart – and some humour and passion for connection, you’re really not just one person. You can really bring together a community, and I think that he would be proud to hear that’s how he was seen and loved,” says Scott. Sophy Wu, who is studying Natural Resources Conservation at UBC, is one of the recent recipients of the bursary. She says she greatly appreciates the opportunity to both honour and carry forward Bearss’ legacy of communitybuilding and appreciating the environment we live in, which are values she has held, herself, since middle school. “Having grown up almost exclusively in urban neighbourhoods, I also wanted to take my undergrad experience to have more field experiences being outdoors, and connecting with different community groups and figuring out ways to

implement sustainable development – even if it’s not on a global scale yet,” says Wu. Valerie Titford from UBC, who worked closely with the Delta Nats and Bearss’ family and friends to make this bursary a reality, wrote in an email to the Optimist how grateful the university is for the generosity

of the 130 donors in supporting students to pursue an education. “It has been a pleasure assisting Tom’s family and the DNS with establishing the Tom Bearss Bursary. I have learned so much about Tom, his legacy in the South Delta community, his ability to make people laugh and his passion for birding and

nature. I hope this bursary inspires students to adopt a similar passion for learning, curiosity and the natural world,” she writes. If you wish to add to this award, send your donation to UBC Annual Giving by contacting them at 604-827-4111 or donating online at http:// support.ubc.ca/tombearss.

Environmental Assessment of the Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project Virtual Information Sessions and Invitation to Comment FortisBC Holdings Ltd. with its regulated natural gas subsidiary FortisBC Energy Inc. (collectively, FortisBC) proposes to expand its existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Tilbury Island in Delta, B.C. The Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project (Tilbury Phase 2) would increase the facility’s LNG production capacity by up to an additional 7,700 tonnes per day for an operational life of at least 40 years. Tilbury Phase 2 would allow for an additional storage capacity of 142,400 m3 (3.5 petajoules), and also include an additional storage tank, liquefaction trains and supporting infrastructure. Tilbury Phase 2 is subject to review under B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Act (2018) and the Federal Impact Assessment Act. Delta school district welcomes back international students DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Though the number of international students interested in studying within the Delta school district is growing again, the number of available host families is not keeping up with that increase. With the district welcoming nearly 200 new international students to secondary schools across Delta at the beginning of the semester, the total of students is currently at 550 students, says Karen Symonds, director of the Delta School District’s international programs. However, even with numbers going back up again since the “mass evacuation” of international students in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, the program has observed a difference in where students are coming from and how many host families are available to take them in. “Some countries are more COVID-nervous than others, and some countries have stricter travel bans and travel restrictions, which make travelling uncomfortable. We have seen a bit of a shift in terms of where our students are coming from and the length of

DELTA SCHOOL DISTRICT PHOTO

Pictured are the students at their first orientation session here in Delta. time they’re coming to study,” says Symonds. Pre-pandemic, the program saw a significant number of students coming from China, South Korea and Vietnam, but they’ve now seen a substantial

decrease from Asian countries with the exception of Japan. They are seeing just as many, if not more, students from Brazil, Germany and Italy, and intakes for September for the next school year are

full, she added. “One of the challenges we are facing is a shortage of homestay families. There is a small element of nervousness around COVID, especially if there are families of multigenerations or families

with health concerns. But the bigger picture of COVID is lots of people’s lifestyles changed. What used to be a bedroom for a homestay student is now a home office, or – we’ve seen the real estate market in Delta – many people are selling their homes and ... moving out of the area,” she said. And arguably, the homestay experience for international students is even more valuable than the school experience because of all the cultural learning that takes place in homes. There, they get to learn about the different cultures that exist within Canada and be immersed within at least one of them, while the host family gets to learn about their international student’s culture. “[Host families] are getting to visit a country without actually getting on an airplane and visiting that country ... and you’re creating a potentially lifelong relationship with another family or families across the globe,” says Symonds. If you’re interested in being a host family for an international student studying within Delta, email homestay@ godelta.ca.

Tsawwassen couple warns of nearly being scammed providing ArriveCan info MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A Tsawwassen couple is warning residents to pay attention to what web link they are using for the ArriveCan app after nearly being scammed of $160 in “processing” fees.

After seeing an ad in the Optimist that encouraged the travel information be filled out at home prior to a trip to Point Roberts, Greg Hoover and his wife Christina jumped on their home computer and clicked on the very first option

that came up in Google search for the ArriveCan app. “She is going through filling out all the information and answering all the questions. When it comes to the very end, she thinks she is all done and up pops a screen and it says $65

please,” explained Greg. Christina paid the fee with her credit card then went through the entire process again on her husband’s behalf. His credit card was used for his payment. When Greg realized his name was spelt wrong on the docu-

ments, he didn’t want any potential hassle at the border, so Christina headed down to Point Roberts on her own. On the trip back to the Boundary Bay crossing, all the info provided earlier at home was in the Canadian Border Services’ computer system. “When she says to the officer ‘my husband wanted to do this too but his name was spelt wrong, he said he would have to reapply. So my wife asked would that be another $65?” said Greg. That’s when the officer pointed out the ArriveCan app is a completely free of charge service. “She showed him the paper work and he was quite shocked,” Greg continued. A suddenly alarmed Christina raced home and contacted her credit card company. Greg did the same and fortunately neither were charged. It turned out they were on a deceptive website that originated in Barcelona,

Spain. The $65 was actually in Euros and it was a pending charge of $84.99 that went onto the cards. The website creator likely took all the information provided and entered into the actual ArriveCan system, so nothing actually would have been detected until Christina had asked the officer about the wrong spelling of her husband’s name. The Hoovers did file a complaint to Delta Police and it has been forwarded to its cybercrime unit. The Government of Canada’s Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre does issue this warning: * ArriveCAN is free! It will never ask you for payment or your credit card information! * Be cautious with search engine results. Scammers are paying or using tools to have their site among the top suggestions. * Be wary about who you’re sharing personal information with. Verify that you are dealing with a trusted source.

Crime trending down in Delta, say DPD

Key crime statistics are decreasing in Delta according to the latest 2021 statistics released by Delta Police. “It’s really good to see those numbers trending down in most areas,” said Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu, who is in charge of Operations at Delta Police. “And these yearend stats are in keeping with the data that Statistics Canada issued in the summer, which showed Delta’s Crime Severity Index to be nearly 40 per cent less than the provincial average.” The Crime Severity Index takes into account both the volume and the seriousness of crime. Property crime was down 10 per cent overall compared to the threeyear-average. Residential break and enters showed the most significant drop, down 29 per cent compared to the three-year-average. Commercial break and enters were also down 10 per cent. Person offences were down eight per

cent compared to the three-year-average, with 726 offences recorded. Violent crimes include offences such as assaults or robberies, while the broader category of persons’ crime also includes harassment, for example. Thefts from auto were one crime type that increased, up four per cent compared to the three-year-average, with 742 thefts from vehicles. “We know this type of crime is particularly troubling for our residents, and I want to reassure the public that we continue to make it a priority, and to look for innovative ways to tackle this issue,” added Sidhu. “I’d also like to request that the public get in the habit of never leaving anything of value in their vehicle, even empty bags or boxes, which could tempt would-be thieves. Generally these are crimes of opportunity, and we see them come in waves.” He also acknowledged that a significant component of this type of crime is due to theft of catalytic converters from vehicles.

100 YEARS

The DPD is working with other police departments and the provincial government on strategies to address this issue. On Delta roads, there were 1,229 collisions reported to police in all of 2021, up 12 per cent compared to the threeyear-average. In 2020 there was a marked decrease overall in the number of vehicles on the road, due to the impacts of COVID, which in turn has affected the three-year-average. The DPD continues to employ an evidencebased approach to road safety, and targets enforcement in areas that see high numbers of collisions. Regarding enforcement, police handed out 8,496 violation tickets in 2021. Delta Police saw a significant increase in the number of drivers who performed poorly on drug sobriety tests conducted by trained officers, up 43 per cent in 2021 compared to the three-year-trend -submitted by Delta Police

Ladner restaurant owners pay tribute to the passing of popular lifetime resident

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Norma Latimer never worked a day for Chris and Dawn Falle, but they knew exactly what she meant to the community for decades. The owners of the Ladner Dairy Queen paid tribute to the lifetime resident on the restaurant’s Ladner Trunk Road signage last week: “Rest in Peace Norma, Ladner Loves You.” Latimer passed away Feb. 6, about a month shy of her 87th birthday. She started working at the original Ladner Dairy Queen in the late 1960s, flipping burgers and dipping cones for the next 14 years. When the Falles opened the new franchise in the exact same location in 2018, Latimer was one of the former employees

they invited back to participate in the grand opening ceremony. “I didn’t have any knowledge of the previous Dairy Queen and as I started to talk to more and more people, like the contractors and electricians before we opened, a lot of them have their own stories with respects to the 1980s and a big part of those stories was Norma and how she treated the kids,” recalled Chris. “She really made them feel welcomed and they said they have a lot of good memories there. “These are people that are now in their late 50s, early 60s. To be honest with you, as a franchise owner of the restaurant that was inspiring because I mean you think about the legacy that she left behind years later.” Latimer would go on to work as a cook at Ladner’s

Landing Pub where she was known for her signature cheesecake. Tributes poured in for Latimer when a photo of the Dairy Queen sign was posted on the Ladner’s Landing Facebook group. Falle added it’s what makes this community so unique. “We have so many people that come in that we call it ‘a smile and a story,” he chuckled. “They have come in and talked about their teenage years at the Dairy Queen in Ladner and Norma’s name came up so often. Even now we have had a couple of people who have come in and seen the sign and say they knew Norma and wanted to thank us.” Donations in Latimer’s memory can be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation www.dhchfoundation.ca/donatenow.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce has received approval for $100,000 in grant funding to bolster and grow the ongoing “Shop Local” message of the We Love Delta initiative. Funding has been provided by the Government of Canada’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and delivered through the BC Chamber of Commerce. Delta’s chamber of Commerce is one of 75 grant recipients across the seven economic regions of B.C. Through this grant, the chamber and Tourism Delta have collaborated on a multi-pillar marketing approach to encourage support of Delta businesses of all sizes and sectors, including micro, small, medium and large businesses across North

Delta, Annacis Island, Tilbury, Ladner and Tsawwassen. “This grant is a tremendous resource which will allow us to present the ripple effect of the Shop Local message from a variety of perspectives,” said chamber executive director Jill McKnight. “Shopping local is about the everyday decisions made by individuals who live, work and play in Delta having a huge economic and social impact. When consumers choose to shop local, they are building our community; whether shopping on Main Street, ordering products and services made in our industrial parks or supporting someone with a home business.” In the coming weeks and months, We Love Delta will be sharing a variety of shop local mes-

sages across multiple platforms including an updated website, videos on YouTube, posts on Facebook and Instagram, the Dine Around Delta campaign and an upcoming We Love Delta Passport sweepstakes. “Our goal is to highlight a selection of the incredible list of businesses here in Delta,” added McKnight. “With more than 4,600 businesses in Delta, every one of us knows someone who benefits from local shopping and in turn those individuals invest back into our community through their salaries, their property taxes, their donations and sponsorship and their active participation in community.” The success of this grant is in large part due to the collaborative efforts of the six partner organizations of the City of

It was continued good news for our neighbours to the south in Point Roberts. It has been well documented by us here at the Optimist of the plight of Point Roberts and their business community during the pandemic who rely so heavily on Canadian travellers visiting the U.S. pene-exclave. Point Roberts has been recognized as a remote border community by Canada’s Order in Council, which means fullyvaccinated Canadians can make essential or non-essential visits for any length of time and are not required to present a pre-entry negative PCR COVID test when returning home or go into quarantine. The trip details need to be provided via the ArriveCan app and there is a chance of being randomly selected to do a COVID test at home when you cross back over the border into Canada. Since we published our latest story on-line and in print last week, our office has been flooded with emails and phone calls with questions and difficulty navigating the ArriveCan app. Some have even asked us why, if they are fully vaccinated, is the app even needed anymore? Good question. We wonder that too. When it comes to short trips, to pick up a parcel, get a few groceries or to fill up your gas tank in Point Roberts and having to fill out the ArriveCan app every time you go across, it’s a real pain. If you want to keep the app in place for longer trips and extended stays in the U.S., I can see the feds making a case for that, but for short trips, it should no longer be required. It’s time to scrap the app.

End of truckers’ blockade won’t solve underlying problems

O

n a cold dark Sunday morning in January 24 big rigs gathered at the Nordel weigh scale in North Delta. So began a cross country truckers’ convoy that sparked a national discussion on what constitutes freedom during a worldwide pandemic. The truckers took their anger to Ottawa, and refused to leave. They created a party atmosphere where anyone with an axe to grind was welcome and a protest soon became an illegal blockade. Watching it unfold on television was emotional. It angered and saddened me. I sympathized deeply with the harassment local businesses and residents had to contend with for 22 days 24/7. The images of people holding Canadian flags pleading for their freedom was confusing. Had they not got the memo? Health restrictions have been implemented successfully to contain a deadly virus that has killed thousands of people in Canada.

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

The pandemic is not a scam, nor is it a conspiracy, or a way to turn our country into a police state. It’s real and it is deadly. I do believe that mandatory vaccines for truckers in North America came late in the game, considering the pandemic is becoming endemic. Somehow that message became muddled as extreme right groups, antivaxers and anti-maskers joined the blockade. The protesters’ anger is real. There are disenfranchised people in this country who are suspicious of government, of globalization and science.

I do not believe those feelings represent the majority of Canadians, nor is there a deep divide between us. To presume protesters will be silent because police cleared Wellington Street is naive. So how do we as a nation, and as a community mend? We can start by listening. What I hear is fear. Fear of economic hardship, of government over reach, fear of academic elites and distrust in general. Add climate change to the mix too. The last two years have been arduous and has fuelled the unrest we see now. Politicians must address Canadians who feel left behind or not listened too, or we risk becoming like the United States. Living in Delta we know truckers are our friends. Let’s remember to tip our hat to their hard work in difficult times and share the road. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writer who follows her husband’s advice to always drive in front or behind a semi-truck on a two-lane highway. That way I won’t be in their blind spot.

Feds must deny RBT2

Editor: While the negative effects of RBT2 on trophy species such as salmon and Orca in the Salish Sea, as documented in the letter from the group of concerned scientists (Optimist, Feb. 17), are indeed alarming, there is an even more important connection; that being between RBT2 and its disruption of the entire food web in the Fraser River Estuary. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) researchers, in their submission to the Canadian Impact Assessment Agency Registry - (Environment and Climate Change

Canada (ECCC) Review of Information Request 2020-4: Biofilm and Effects to Migratory Birds, and Appendix IR20204-A - Registry # 2282) - inform that the rich fields of intertidal biofilm on Roberts Bank that are depended on by an entire species of migratory shorebirds will be irretrievably crippled by RBT2; that same biofilm is also responsible for generating the fatty acid nutrients relied on by other shorebirds, crabs, the commercial crab harvest, fish, including salmon, and, yes, Orcas. Fundamentally, RBT2 threatens to put a permanent stake in the heart of

Roberts Bank that drives the productivity and biodiversity of the whole Fraser River estuary. The richness of intertidal biofilm on Roberts Bank is exactly why it is a major stop on the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds. It is also why that wildlife management area is identified as providing “critical wintering grounds for the highest number of waterfowl and shorebirds found anywhere in Canada”. It is for all these important reasons that the approval for Roberts Bank Terminal 2 must be denied by the federal government. Roger Emsley

Editor: It is always a sad scene to watch Canadians pitted against one another. Forcing people to choose one side or the other has been a tactic used by emperors and dictators for millennia. You are either with us or against us, it just so happens to be a manipulative rhetoric that has always

worked. The basic principle is this: the ruling class divides the rest of society by talking about their differences instead of their similarities. This leaves the lower and middle classes fighting with each other so that they, the ruling class, can obtain more power. So next time you are

put in a situation where you find yourself judging your fellow man for expressing their opinion, regardless of the subject matter, please ask yourself these questions: who benefits from this? And would our community be a better place if my ability to speak freely and openly was taken away? Joe Hughes

Editor: I agree with Mr. Smyth about picking up after your pooch (Optimist, letters, Feb. 17), but what about the garbage around our streets? No one seems to be concerned about the degrading masks, plastic bits and pieces and dangerous metal wires lurking on our streets.

Walking our fourmonth-old puppy through Leslie Park yesterday, we met a lovely lady and her black lab. She had on a pair of surgical gloves and handfuls of garbage. She said she has been picking up garbage in her neighbourhood since 1972. We continued on and sure enough our

pup had something in his mouth, which puppies will do. It was a three-inch piece of wire attached to a plastic spring type of contraption. Thankfully we lured it away from him with a treat. Let’s all do our part for our community and “bin it”. Hilde Gregory

Thanks to this young man for his help Editor: To the young man from Delta Secondary (in his grad year), you didn’t have to stop and help, but you did. I was hunched over at 57th and Grove at 11 p.m. looking for my wife’s fallen earring (which had

already been replaced once), and you had said your goodbyes to your buddy and were going to head home, but you stopped to help. I even told you not to worry about it, but you insisted. And you were the one who found my wife’s

DPD designated one of B.C.`s top employers

For the fourth year in a row, the Delta Police Department (DPD) has been designated as one of “BC’s Top Employers.” The annual competition, now in its 17th year, is organized by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. The special designation recognizes employers that are leaders in offering exceptional places to work and grow. Applications are evaluated by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers using the same eight criteria as the national competition: physical workplace, work atmosphere and social, health, financial and family benefits, vacation and time off, employee communications, performance management, training

and skills development and community involvement. Applications are open to all B.C. public and private sector employers. The DPD is one of the only two police departments to be designated alongside the Saanich Police Department. “I am proud to announce that the DPD has been designated as one of BC’s Top Employers for the fourth year in a row,” said DPD Chief Neil Dubord. “It is every employer’s responsibility to focus on the health and well-being of their team. Here, at the DPD, employee health (both physical and mental) and wellness and the various other associated factors, such as the availability of diverse

benefits, and professional development opportunities, are the pillars to providing excellence in policing services to our community, due to the very nature of police work. And that is exactly why, as a progressive police department, in our new strategic plan, we prioritize investing into our team and our community. “The concept of investing in our team is simple: if we invest in and take care of our people, they will invest in and take care of the community. As a Top Employer, we will strive to continuously prepare, equip and develop our team to provide the best possible service to our community.” -Submitted by Delta Police

Annacis Auto Terminal Optimization Project

Invitation to participate in the public engagement period About the project The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority—in partnership with terminal operator Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions—is proposing improvements to the Annacis Auto Terminal at the Port of Vancouver in Delta. By expanding two existing terminal rail yards, installing electric vehicle charging stations and replacing select terminal buildings with a new vehicle processing building, we will improve efficiency at the terminal within its existing footprint so that it can meet an increasing customer demand for hybrid and energy-efficient vehicles, and for auto imports from Asia. The proposed project is in the design phase and is being reviewed under the port authority’s project and environmental review process.

How to share your feedback From February 23 to March 29, 2022, the port authority invites you to learn more about this proposed project and share your feedback to help inform the project construction staging and traffic management plan. In support of government guidance to practice physical distancing to reduce the spread of COVID-19, engagement is taking place online.

If approved, construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2022 and to be completed by fall 2023. The project is funded by the port authority, the terminal operator, and the Government of Canada through the National Trade Corridors Fund.

Proposed signage for new casino sparks concerns from neighbouring Ladner farms DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Though Delta council approved the variance permits for Cascades Casino Delta’s proposed large, illuminated and flashing sign during their Feb. 14 meeting, they’ve urged city staff to work closely with the applicant to mediate concerns from neighbouring farms. The five correspondence pieces sent to council expressed opposition to the applicant requesting to put up signs that go against the city’s signage bylaw in terms of maximum size and permitting animated and flashing signs. Most cited light pollution being the main issue, saying the proposed illuminated, flashing sign would disrupt people within their homes, disturb waterfowl trying to feed on farmland at night and affect surrounding livestock. Others were concerned about the sheer size of the signs particularly of the one proposed to be lit up and flashing, saying it would create an eyesore. “When we turn this back to staff, I just need some assurance that those concerns are going to be addressed ... [and] be looked into and reported back before we finally adopt the bylaw changes and variances, [then] I’ll be okay with moving it forward,” said Coun. Dan Copeland. Council then agreed to amend the Community Planning and Development Department’s recommendation that the variance permit for the biggest, ani-

mated and flashing sign be issued, adding that these visual-impact concerns need to be addressed in order to have that permit. The offending sign is requested to be seven metres tall, which is double the bylaw’s maximum height, and to have an area of 29 square meters, which is 11.5 square metres more than the bylaw’s maximum. Mayor George Harvie highlighted how the existing

signage bylaw was created all the way back in 2003, and how even minor requests for signage variances have to come through council to be approved. The sign’s proposed location is in the northwest corner of the property at 6000 60 Ave., surrounded by farmland, and would be on an existing right-of-way. It would be “the first point of contact with patrons; consequently, the applicant is requesting a larger sign and electronic reader board to promote its brand advertise and market casino programming such as events, entertainment and dining,” reads the staff report. Councillors Alicia Guichon and Jeannie Kanakos agreed with Copeland, stressing that these neighbouring farms need to be heard out and have their concerns addressed by the applicant. “I’m hoping that there will be a direction of a more elegant, keeping with the natural setting [design], rather than flashing garishness – it’s just not necessary,” said Kanakos. “Folks who are going there, [to the casino], are going to know where they’re going and not be able to miss it, so, I really hope that something very tasteful and perhaps more muted than in a normal setting where you’ve got competing bright lights [is presented], because this isn’t the case, it’s in the middle of farmland.” Council also approved the applicant adding three Liquor-Primary licenses and two Patron-Participation Entertainment Endorsement licenses and will be sending a resolution in support of the licensing to the province’s Liquor Cannabis Regulation Branch.

DSS pays tribute to Black History Month

MARK BOOTH

Black History Month is front and centre at Delta Secondary. Through the efforts of staff and administration, students at the Ladner high school are learning more about the month-long tribute and acknowledgment in the classroom and beyond. That includes in the learning commons area where teacher-librarian Mrs. Loiselle has used her impressive monthly banner displays to recognize prominent and influential individuals along with the Black community’s rich history in the province, including Hogan’s Alley in Vancouver. Students can use their phone to scan the QR code on the banners to learn more about each individual or subject that is featured. “At Delta Secondary we are doing our best

of how we are actively working towards our Vision 2030 Mission Statement of being: an innovative and inclusive community where all learners belong, and everyone soars. As a school we value diversity

and inclusion and strive to ensure that all school activities are inclusive, accessible, and equitable for students.” Pavao also noted how staff is using the opportunity to bring an awareness and education to

their students through a curricular lens. It includes: -Ms. Kates and the DSS anti-racism committee’s Black Excellence Day - awareness and promotion by the school’s anti-racism team (in conjunction with the district antiracism committee). -Ms. Huff’s English 12 class examining the Black experience in Canada through the lens of the Desmond Cole documentary The Skin I’m In and through various episodes of the CBC series Being Black in Canada, giving the students a beginning understanding of the history of Black Canadians as well as their modern experiences and contributions to Canadian culture and society, as well as the continued efforts towards social justice. -Guitar teacher Mr. Dobrovolny teaching several lessons around the history and impact of Black Musicians (music) - history and origins, impact on music genres (rock and roll, blues, gospel) and how these musicians influenced

today’s music. “Teachers and staff are bringing students and classes down to our library to see our Black History Month display and the many books and resources that are available for individuals to learn more about the stories associated with this topic,” continued Pavao. “Our learning commons is a vibrant and interactive space where classes come down to supplement or enrich their learning - learning research and inquiry skills, access to written and digital resources, student presentations, and to see the monthly displays that are created by Ms. Loiselle.” Other featured banner displays that she has created on a yearly basis include: Remembrance Day, LGBTQ+, Truth and Reconciliation, Freedom to Read, Diverse Voices- Read Around the World, DSS Festival of Dangerous Ideas, DSS FUNctional Math Festival, DSS Criminolgy 12 Murder Mystery, DSS ComicCon and Various Genre Focuses.

Junior hockey championships in April will bring tourists dollars to the city, says Ice Hawks owner MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

As COVID restrictions begin to ease, the Delta Ice Hawks are busy preparing to bring a big junior hockey event to the city. That’s the message team owner and president Eduard Epshtein delivered to the Ladner Business Association on Feb. 17 as his team is set to host the 2022 Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial championships, April 6 to 10 at the Ladner Leisure Centre (LLC). The four-day tournament will feature the Ice Hawks taking on the champions of the Pacific Junior, Vancouver Island and Kootenay International leagues. A total of eight games will be played with daily doubleheaders, leading up to the gold and bronze medal games on April 10. Epshtein’s presentation came two days after learning all venues can return to full capacity as long as vaccine passports and face masks for

The LLC capacity is about 1,000. It’s the first time Delta is hosting the championship in franchise history. “The arena is quite busy during the games and there will

be (out-of-town) people who will stay locally and spending locally,” Epshtein told LBA members. “We do anticipate that it will be a much-needed influx of tourist dollars in the community as well.

“We’re looking for partnerships and are talking to a few restaurants. We’re talking to a local brewery as well where we could perhaps have a beer garden and a barbecue set-up outside (the arena), so we are

looking at all those ideas.” Businesses have several ways to get behind the tournament from tiered packages to program advertising and ingame recognition. The Cyclone Cup will be contested for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. Delta was actually awarded the 2021 event and Epshtein had to go through the entire negotiation process with the city again to make it happen in 2022. “It’s every three years that our league gets to host this, so it’s a rare occasion,” he added. “It was only possible because of support, not from just the City of Delta, but also from the community. “There are seven user groups at (the LLC) that had to agree for us to extend the ice time as it usually comes out at the end of March, so the city has done a great job in consulting with all the groups and everyone was very supportive. We are very proud of the community support.”

Mayor George Harvie writes national & provincial Pickleball organizations with suggestions IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The City of Delta wants to see more pickleball players enjoying their

chosen court, but just wants to cut down on the noise. Following the defeat of proposed pickleball courts at Pebble Hill

Park, council at a recent meeting due to negative area resident feedback, Mayor George Harvie has sent a letter to Karen Rust, president of

Pickleball Canada and Walter Knecht, president of Pickleball BC, expressing support for the continued growth of the sport of pickleball.

GETTY IMAGES

In the letter, Harvie encourages these organizations to pursue equipment updates and other best practices to mitigate the growing noise concern associated with pickleball courts. “A number of cities have been in the press and I have talked with other mayors about complaints that they have been having with regards to the proximity to homes,” said Harvie in a follow-up interview with the Optimist. “I very much support the pickleball organizations and anything we can do to keep people active is what we want to do. We provide free passes to play, so building on that, we want to put more pickleball courts in – they certainly are in demand –

but in saying that, we just have to ensure that we don’t effect the nearby residential areas in terms of livability, so we have to ensure we are looking at the whole picture. “We do have spaces and we kept the funds that were dedicated to that project [in Pebble Hill Park] and we will be putting more courts in, but we are looking at where they would be appropriate.” Harvie said he has suggested that the provincial and federal organizations look at their equipment and the aspects of the sport to see if modifications can be made to mitigate the noise concerns. “This would then in turn, allow us to put in more courts in those residential areas,” he said.

City contributes $10k to Delta Farmers’ Institute program DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Delta is contributing $10,000 to the Delta Farmers’ Institute (DFI) to implement a new program proposed by the B.C. Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative (CAI) that will expand the monitoring of salinity in Delta’s irrigation canals. And as per the DFI’s request, the city will continue to work with them and the CAI to carry out this program that will build off the recently completed Fraser River irrigation water salinity monitoring project and allow for farmers to have more extensive, continuous data on salinity. The proposed project will involve installing additional monitoring sites at key locations within Delta’s irrigation canals and is one of several programs put for-

ward by the CAI and the city over the past nine years to help Delta’s agriculture sector adapt to climate change – which are typically led by the DFI – as part of their regional adaptation strategies program. The city’s original climate change adaptation strategies plan was developed in 2013 in collaboration with the CAI, where 11 strategies and 26 actions were identified for how Delta’s agriculture sector could adapt to climate change. Those strategies were then updated in 2017. Not including this new project, 14 projects addressing priority actions in the strategies plan have been implemented within Delta since 2013 through working with the CAI – four of which have been either recently completed or are in the process of being wrapped up in this

current implementation phase. These include the Strengthening Communications and Preparedness for Flooding Events project, the Delta’s Future Agricultural Water Supply & Demand

project, the Increasing Accessibility and Applications of Salinity Monitoring Data in Delta and the Delta Greenhouse Water Supply Risks & Options project. “The B.C. Agriculture & Food Climate Action

Initiative works with partners in Delta to deliver projects that equip producers and the agricultural community to adapt to climate change,” reads a Delta staff report presented at the Feb. 14th council meeting. “Continued

The whole region needs to be better prepared and better funded when it comes to flood resiliency. That’s the message from Delta Mayor George Harvie who has been appointed to the new Metro Vancouver Flood Resiliency Task Force and the Municipal Finance Authority. Harvie, alongside other regional municipal mayors, will be working to advocate to the provincial and federal governments for support for communities affected by flooding. The task force will provide recommendations to the Metro Vancouver board and to the board members appointed to the Fraser Basin Council’s Leadership Committee of the Lower Mainland Flood Management Strategy on issues related to flood resiliency.

“It was a recommendation that I made at the board that we need to collectively go to the federal and provincial governments to ask for funding,” he said. “Right now it is everyone on their own and we [Delta] have done very well over the years, but at the same time we need a coordinated approach. “With the situation that happened in Abbotsford, the funding is going to be really needed for all the cities that are facing funding issues to implement changes and improvements to their dikes. I think this is very positive and I’m happy Metro Vancouver supported me. I will be on the task force on behalf of Delta. Getting a longterm commitment is what we need and not when there is an election and the money seems to poor through. We need continuous, long-term funding to improve our dikes in the Lower Mainland.”

have to be close. That is what God wants. He wants you to get close to Him. Close enough to hear Him speak, to hear Him gently tell you where to go, what to do or what to say. God wants us to hear Him, but it requires a level of focus, it requires intentionality. You can’t hear a whisper among a crowd unless you lean in, draw towards it and focus on it. The world is loud, but God is always available. No matter how crazy things are. God wants you and I to lean into Him, draw close to Him and focus on HIM. Maybe you haven’t heard from God in a long time, maybe it was just a minute ago, but rest assured that He is there and wants to speak to you. When you quiet your soul, you can hear His still, small voice.

tion, but God wasn’t there either. These were both very powerful acts of nature displaying power and might but God was not in either of them. If God isn’t in that, then what could be more powerful? Next, there was a fire, and we have seen God manifest in the fire before so surely He would be there. But again, He was not there. So where is God? Why can’t Elijah hear Him? Finally, God spoke, not in the powerful showy way we would have expected, but instead, it was in the sound of a gentle whisper. God was there all along, but He wanted Elijah to pay attention to Him in the quiet closeness of His whisper. How close do you need to be to hear a whisper? Close yes, you

Tsawwassen author an ambassador for the MS Society of Canada’s ‘Read-a-Thon’ DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Best-selling children’s author and illustrator from Tsawwassen, Ashley Spires, is honoured to have been selected as an ambassador for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada’s annual “Reada-Thon” fundraiser. This is Spires’ second year in a row of being asked to be a Read-aThon ambassador. “It was a no-brainer for me because someone in my life is affected by MS very severely, and so, of course I want to help in any way I can,” she said. The MS Read-a-Thon is a tradition of more than 40 years for the society, where they encourage kids to read as many books as they can during the month of February while raising funds to support those in their community impacted by the chronic

autoimmune disease. With only a week left before the campaign ends on Feb. 28, participating children, families and schools have raised more than $56,000 for the society. All the money goes towards supporting programming for the MS community, mobilizing cure research and improving the quality of life for the more than 90,000 Canadians who live with MS. “It’s absolutely wonderful. I can’t think of a better cause to be part of,” says Spires. Last year, their fundraiser went digital, and this year, they’ve created an interactive website that allows kids to track their reading, customize their own avatars, earn badges as they reach fundraising milestones and much more. The MS ambassadors, who also include David Bouchard, Mireille Messier and junior

ambassador Ainara Alleyne, have been working to spread the word about the fundraiser on social media. Spires is an author and illustrator of several award-winning children’s books, including The Most Magnificent Thing, Burt the Beetle Doesn’t Bite and the Binky the Space Cat series which was the inspiration for the animated television show on Treehouse and Netflix called Agent Binky: Pets of the Universe. “This year, we have a goal of raising $150,000 through this event. By participating, you’re joining hundreds of children and families who are raising much-needed funds and making a difference in the lives of people impacted by MS, one book at a time,” said Kyla Arsenault, senior director of community fundraising for the MS Society of Canada.

Tsawwassen author releases two books DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

It certainly isn’t Ian Kent’s first rodeo when it comes to writing books, and it surely won’t be his last with his two latest releases Travels with Diana and Spooky Action. Both stem from the Tsawwassen resident’s love and passion for exploration, whether that’s travelling with this wife in Travels with Diana or exploring quantum physics and exoplanets in his sciencefiction book Spooky Action. Here is a look at both. Travels with Diana (Vol. 1) This collection of Kent’s fond, funny travelling stories are based off his journal and website entries documenting trips with his wife of over 50 years,

Diana. The pair make a point of getting as rich of an experience as possible from the places they visit, whether it’s staying with a family from there, trying the local cuisine and delicacies or simply chatting with the locals when able to do so. “We do everything on our own, and I do a lot of research ahead of time so that we know where we’re going and what we’re doing, but independent travel is such an interesting way of doing it because you spend time with the people and you get to talk to people that actually live there,” says Kent. He hopes that readers of Travels with Diana will be inspired to stray from the more formulaic, organized style of travelling, where you don’t truly

get to immerse yourself in the culture surrounding you. Travels with Diana is available for purchase on Amazon. Spooky Action This science-fiction book follows the story of students accidentally creating an experiment in quantum entanglement for their science fair. They go on to receive a mysterious message, which turns out being from scientists on a recently discovered exoplanet lightyears away. Inspired by Kent’s curiosity for one of quantum physics’ weirdest and most wonderful theories and the 2017 discovery of seven, potentially-lifesustaining exoplanets orbiting a single star named TRAPPIST-1, he pulled the two concepts together to create Spooky

Action, he says. Based on the quantum entanglement theory, where particles – regardless of how far apart they are from one another – have the ability to impact one another through their shared, unified state, Kent’s book offers readers a thrilling sciencefiction read. “All the science-fiction movies, the first thing that happens [when they discover alien life] is they call up the army and they bring out tanks and rockets and jet planes, and they try to wipe these guys out and they don’t even know what they’re here for,” says Kent. Spooky Action, which is available for purchase on Amazon, is book one, and Kent has book two scheduled to release later this year.

Earthwise Garden Buddies connecting with seniors

Connecting with the natural world through gardening can have a profound effect on our bodies, both mentally and physically. For years, Earthwise Society’s Therapeutic Horticulture programs have harnessed the

intrinsic power of nature to provide healing and well-being to people in crisis. Seniors in particular often report experiencing measurable benefits from interacting with nature, from increased fitness to improved

confidence and mental health. Garden Buddies is a gardening together therapeutic horticulture program designed to improve physical activity, mental well-being, and social connectedness in isolated seniors.

Seniors are paired with trained Garden Buddy mentors to participate in shared gardening and nature-based activities at home and at the Earthwise Garden. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Earthwise has adapted the program to also include an interactive webinar format, bringing seniors together to cultivate their green thumbs from a distance. The demand for the Garden Buddies program is high, and to keep up with that need, Earthwise is offering a free six-week mentor training program to teach new volunteers the necessary skills through a series of indepth webinars. Potential mentors will learn all about the

Garden Buddies program and how to work with and empower seniors in the garden. They will also get some valuable tips on developing fun and engaging therapeutic horticulture activities, both in-person and virtual, geared at senior gardeners. The program will be led by Katie McGillivray, a registered horticultural therapist and will include knowledgeable guest speakers, question and answer sessions, tools for reflective practice and evaluating programs, and more. “What is so unique about Garden Buddies is that it is intergenerational and community-led,” says McGillivray. “When you see the exchange of knowledge and strong connections that form

between mentors and participants in this program, it is clear that this program is not only about growing gardens, but growing friendships and community as well.” The Garden Buddies Mentor Training program is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the benefits of therapeutic horticulture and how it is used to promote health and well-being in people of all ages. The Garden Buddies Mentor Training program is completely virtual, and runs from 1 to 2 p.m. on Feb 28, and March 7, 9, 16, 21, and 23. For more information about the program, including the weekly topics, and to register, email: info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

The City of Delta’s seniors bus is moving once again and Delta is encouraging seniors who need a ride to get in touch. The Delta Seniors Bus program is a free transportation service for seniors 65-plus living in Delta. The bus makes curbside stops to pick up

and drop off seniors who have booked the service. It offers easy access to local medical services, appointments, recreation centres, shopping locations, and other community amenities within Delta. You can even take the Delta Seniors Bus to visit friends in Delta. Seniors must be able to embark and disembark the bus independently. The bus has several seats

and room for walkers, wheelchairs and scooters, and is equipped with an automatic lift. Registration is required prior to using the service. The service is offered Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Book a ride by calling 604-597-4876. The service was made possible in part by an Age-Friendly Grant, a partnership between

transit bus for a totol of $65,000. This bus will be added to the Delta seniors bus fleet. Delta initially launched the North Delta Seniors Bus program in 2013 with one, 16-passenger, and

wheelchair accessible bus. In 2015, a second bus was added to the fleet to operate in South Delta. The program proved to be so successful, that a third bus was added to the fleet in 2018.

Devils earn first B.C. berth in 17 years

South Delta off to Langley Events Centre next week after winning South Fraser zone title

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The South Delta Sun Devils senior girls basketball team is headed back to the provincials for the first time since 2005 and it was done in emphatic fashion. The Sun Devils secured their spot in next week’s B.C. AAAA Championships at the Langley Events Centre by capturing the South Fraser zone playoffs with a pair of wins over top 10 ranked teams. South Delta rolled to an 86-60 win over No. 10 Seaquam Seahawks on Friday then got past No. 8 and host Fleetwood Dragons in the title game 24 hours later, 80-73 in overtime. The victories not only

avenged their only losses in league play, but should result in a favourable seed for the 16-team provincials that tips-off next Wednesday. Head coach Sharon Butler had been anxiously waiting for the potential playoff rematches after suffering a one-point to defeat to Seaquam and a six-point loss to Fleetwood back in midJanuary when her roster wasn’t at full strength. The Sun Devils not only showed what they are capable of, but how much they have improved in the past month. “Oh yeah we were hungry,” beamed Butler after the Seaquam win that locked up the B.C. berth. “We have had so many injuries this season and have so many multi-sport

This is incredible and it’s so nice to win this game. We didn’t want to lose and suddenly you have a wild card game on Tuesday that you have to win to get in.” The Sun Devils took control against the Seahawks with a big third quarter that saw them extend a 10-point halftime lead to a 61-37 advantage. They did it with tenacious defence, effective transition play and terrific ball movement that led to open looks throughout the contest. Taking full advantage was Grade 10 wing/forward Kaija Rutledge who used her ever-improving

shooting stroke to pour in a season-high 38 points. She added 23 more in the title game and was named the tournament MVP. Forward MacKenzie Campbell added 18 against Fleetwood and was named to the allstar team. The two-sport standout earned the same honours in the fall with the SDSS volleyball team. “Kaija completely focused on changing her game in September and after she switched club teams. She has been spending hours upon hours just shooting the basketball,” said Butler. “It’s been just awesome to see. “We have also really

started to share the ball and it’s got MacKenzie going. She was our player of the game (in the opener against Lord Tweedsmuir) and is shooting the ball so well right now. She is such a high IQ player.” Butler also had plenty of praise for the tenacity and work ethic of Grade 11 post Kira Denney, along with her backcourt, featuring Spanish exchange students Amanda Maestro and Silvia Castaneda who provided outstanding defence. Guard Alexa Kusel came back from an ankle injury to contribute while seniors Sophie Gower and Teila Noble gave valuable

minutes off the bench when South Delta got into foul trouble. “Sophie and Teila provided incredible poise, leadership and defence to anchor the team in the fourth quarter and OT,” Butler added. “It was the first-time spectators were allowed since December and it was a full house and hostile crowd. You couldn’t hear yourself think, an awesome atmosphere. It was so great to be back in the gym with fans and the energy.” The roster also features Rachel Rosser, Makena Rutledge, Brianna Jassmann, Katrina Staley, Taylor Katsube and Olivia Barber.

100 YEARS

February 24, 2022 The Delta Optimist A27

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES My husband and I just recently purchased our second home, this was our second time using Tyson and I’m sure it won’t be our last! Tyson and the Fraser Elliott Team consistently went above and beyond in every step of the process and helped us understand everything that was going on. They were extremely accommodating of our busy schedules and worked around the clock to make everything work. I had a lot of wants and needs for my new home and Tyson worked with us to make them all work! He has great rapport building skills, communication, time management and is so easy to approach and talk to. The Fraser Elliott group was able to help us list our home, sell and purchase a new home all within dates that lined up perfectly! We felt supported and comfortable the entire process and can’t recommend Tyson and the Fraser Elliott Group more! -J&K My wife and I would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thankyou to the team Natalie, Marilyn and Miranda for their hard work. For their professionalism and incredible commitment towards the sale of our townhouse unit. From the initial meeting, everything was made clear and great advice given in relation to all aspects of the sale. The team has in-depth knowledge of the local markets; they were extremely communicative and had infinite patience. Their marketing skills and aggressiveness are unmatched by anyone. We would definitely recommend them to anyone. - Melyn and Diana Yeo Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group/ The Firm did what two other Realtors could not during the worst possible times in BC and across Canada to sell real estate. They sold our home. We have met most of their team over the last year and found them to be personable, well motivated, intelligent and professional. My wife and I have no problem recommending them to anyone. - Happy Customer From our initial meeting with Fraser and his entire Team to the completion of the Sale of our Property we found the experience to be remarkable. The attention to detail, the timely communications and the terrific rapport equaled “Exceptional Service.” If you are looking for “Simply the Best” without hesitation we would recommend the Fraser Elliott Group. - Hilary & Joe Fraser Elliott and his team at The Firm are first class from start to finish. All staff were highly professional and informative you can tell they are like a big family. We felt so comfortable throughout the whole process of buying our home. Thanks Firm family for helping us find our dream home! - Lucic Family We had a very good experience with the Fraser Elliott group. They delivered what they said they would. We got the full asking price. Philip Seal was our representative and I would use his services again. -Jaques M

Fraser Elliott Group/ The Firm did what two other Realtors could not. They sold our home during the worst possible conditions in BC and across Canada. My wife and I found their team focused, intelligent, motivated and professional. We definitely recommend people who provide the success that they in fact did. -Bill Fallow It's been a pleasure to work with Fraser and his team for the sale of our home. Having sold our 1st home we didn’t know what to expect but the entire team made the process seamless from end to end. Everything was presented and conducted in a professional manner and we were kept informed of all showings, progress and next steps along the way. Would definitely recommend the team to friends, family and colleagues as they were a pleasure to work with - Aman and Sandy Atwal We had a great experience selling our home with Philip from the Fraser Elliott Group. He was professional and personable and negotiated a good price. We look forward to his guidance as we purchase our next home. -Karin Giesbrecht Fraser Elliott sets the tone in the industry and is a dedicated individual committed to excellence in the real estate market. Thanks Fraser for setting an example! You rock. -Impact Pressure Washing We are thankful we chose the Fraser Elliott group to help sell our Tsawwassen home. The entire team worked like a well oiled machine. Every aspect of our sale was handled in a very professional manner and we were always kept informed throughout the process. They made us feel confident in their commitment to selling our house, in their awareness of market trends and in their professional and ethical standards. We highly recommend them to any buyers and sellers who want knowledgeable, friendly and effective service. - L. Dhillon We had made the decision to retire and move back to Ontario. We were not familiar with Realtors in the market however knew that Fraser Elliott was the listing agent on our existing home. We interviewed a few agents and Philip and the Fraser Elliott team far exceeded their competitors in terms of knowledge and putting together a marketing plan for our home during very tough times. Once the home was listed it sold within a few days far exceeding our expectations. We were very happy with their services and would recommend to others. - John and Pat E Fraser, Just wanted to say Michelle + Phil and the rest of your team crushed it for us. Sold our place at a price we were happy to get, and got us into a dream area of Tsawwassen. We’re pumped. Just wanted to let you know how happy we were with the whole process and that we couldn’t feel anymore like we made the right decision going with you and your group. - Mike & Jen

Thanks to the Fraser Elliott team for the sale of our home. Always friendly and enjoyable to talk to. We always got an update as to whom the house was shown to and the response of the clients. -Astrid Bader Super happy with the Fraser Elliott Group on the sale of our commercial office space. They brought us an offer within a few months and closed the deal for us. Thank you! - Murat Erbatur / Deborah Jones When we decided to put our house on the market we started taking a really close look at Realtors in our area and how they work. It’s such a competitive market at the moment and having the right tools is crucial, especially when taking about selling a house, the largest single investment of our lives. We wanted to make sure that we had a motivated team that was also connected to todays market and marketing tools. We chose the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group, but we were surprised by our experience, in a great way. We found the team very responsive, always communicating their needs clearly and always willing to work with us to ensure the best experience in this emotional decision and totally professional at all times. We could not have asked for a better team or a better experience. Our house was sold in around 3 weeks, after having multiple offers and the service did not stop there. The team at Fraser Elliott Estate Group take a personal interest in ensuring that your questions are answered and also making helpful suggestions regarding the legal aspects and relocating. They are the best!! - Mark and Julie Austen at Fraser Elliott Group was recommended to us by a relation, as we knew no one in the real estate business in the lower mainland being 800 km away. We had to deal long distance through the whole process. The experience was seamless. Excellent communication and the whole process was very easy and efficient. We felt very well looked after during the one month we were listed until the property sold. Austen provided excellent service regardless of the time of day. We are very happy with this experience and would highly recommend this Firm. - Ian It has been a great experience working with you. All of you were always very professional and attentive, looking out for our best interest. We want to thank you for all your hard work. - Sincerely, José & Aurora The Fraser Elliott group did it again! This team rocks. I jumped on an opportunity and they promptly helped with a 10 day close! They were on top of everything and with their help, I’m now in a beautiful new home and I couldn’t be happier. Cheers to Fraser, Phil and the entire team. You guys really made it happen for me. Much love! - Brandon Smith

Love’s greatest gift is remembrance

WADE, Bryan

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father Leslie (Les) Joyce on February 4, 2022. Les is predeceased by his wife Margaret, father George, mother Sarah, brothers Stanley, Jim, Ronald, George and sister Florence (Cis).

Al from “Underground” (1975) a play by Bryan Wade: “Words mean so many things to so many people … I do believe in what I’m doing now… That’s all I know. This is all I can believe in. My voice. My words.”

He is survived and dearly missed by his children Stephen (Cyndi), Trish (Mike), sister Dorothy (Dot) and sister-in-law Molly, and many nieces and nephews. Les was born in Drumgar, Northern Ireland. His beginning adventures as a young man took him to London, England where he served in the Royal Air Force and started his career with the London Transit service. He met and married his wife Margaret in London and they immigrated to Philadelphia. Les’s next chapter included a coast to coast move from Philadelphia to Richmond/South Delta with Margaret and their young children. Les settled into a long career with BC Transit and spent his retirement years in Richmond/South Delta. Les enjoyed travelling - he was always up for family road trips and visiting Ireland. His strong love of music and singing, in particular Irish music, made sure all family members knew all the words to many of his favourite Irish songs. Les loved to dance especially with his wife Margaret. Les is fondly remembered for his love of laughter and keen sense of humour. His quick wit, bright smile and infectious laugh will be missed and remembered by his family and friends.

Many thanks go out to the KinVillage Care Home staff for taking such great care of our Dad.

Your gift assists the Foundation to purchase vital medical equipment for Delta Hospital. Working Together to make a Difference!

JOYCE, Leslie (Les) December 3, 1934 - February 4, 2022

Les (Dad) will be deeply missed and will live in our hearts forever.

HAMILTON, Elizabeth August 3, 1946 − February 9, 2022 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Elizabeth Hamilton. Liz passed peacefully at Langley Hospice with family and friends at her side. She was predeceased by husband Ron Steele (2000) and parents Gerrit and Christina Keizer. Liz is survived by husband Wayne Hamilton; brother Gerrit (Tracey) Keizer; sister Evelyn (Al) Hammersmark; sons Terry (Lisa), Lance (Suzi), and Brent (Becca); eight grandchildren; one great− grandson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to the Langley Hospice Society. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends. You are forever in our hearts.

Celebrate the lives of loved ones with your stories, photographs and tributes on legacy.com/obituaries/ deltaoptimist

As requested by Les there will be no service. If you would like to remember Les, and in lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated and can be made to either the Alzheimer Society of BC (https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en), the Delta Stroke Recovery Society (www.deltastrokerecovery.com) Delta Humane Society (https://calls.delta.ca/dcas/) or Critter Care Wildlife Society (https://www.crittercarewildlife.org/donate). Born in Sarnia, Ontario, in 1950, Bryan Wade, husband, father, friend, educator, mentor, coach, volunteer, supporter of the arts, and accomplished Canadian playwright and dramatist, passed away on February 3, 2022 due to an unexpected and brief battle with coronary artery disease. For the man of words that he was, the words here seem too little and insignificant to the rich life of words he really lived. Bryan grew up primarily in Esquimalt and had his first play produced in Toronto before even finishing his time at U.Vic. Degree completed, he moved to Toronto, living there for 12 years, where he was productive and successful as a dramatist writing for theatre, television and radio. He did his MFA at U C LA i n f i l m , a nd e ventu al l y s e tt l e d a t U B C teaching in the now, School of Creative Writing. For over 30 years, he mentored many to professional writing careers and founded the Brave New Play Rites Festival where his students could see their plays in production - an invaluable experience allowing students to take the playwriting process beyond the page. He lived what he loved, and loved what he did. Tsawwassen was home for him, his wife and two children for over 30 years as well, where he played the role of ‘Coach Bryan’, volunteered for youth sports programs in a variety of ways over the years, and was competitive in the local Tomato Contest. Many will mourn the loss of our beloved Bryan and his creative and caring voice in theatre, at UBC, and at home in our own community. Heartbroken by his sudden passing, his wife, Johane, sons H a r r i s o n a n d D u n c a n , s i s t e r, D e b b i e , a n d a collection of brother and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and many good friends from home, across the country, and abroad. We will miss his time with us, his laugh, his stories, keeping an eye o n h i s c o u nt i n g a t c ri bbag e, hi s ho m em a de chocolate chip cookies, and his words - his wise, sometimes wild, wonderful words. Some of us will feel the curtain came down too early, but the play was so good, we just didn’t want it to end. Online condolences can be made at deltafuneral.ca
