Deltans react to Russian invasion of Ukraine Ladner man fearful for safety of father while war rages around him MARK BOOTH AND IAN JACQUES

O p t i m i s t S t a f f Wr i t e r s

Sergey Kulikov has never felt further away from his father. It has been an anxious few days for the Ladner resident and his family as they watch in horror the Russian invasion of Ukraine including his hometown of Kharkiv where Sergey’s 80-yearold father Vladimir Kulikov resides. The northeastern city, located about 650 km from Moscow, is Ukraine’s second largest city with a population of 1.4 million. Since the invasion, Sergey has communicated with his dad and other friends in the Ukraine over the Internet using Whatsapp and Viber. “There’s emotions, lots of emotions, especially with my father still there,” Sergey told the Optimist. “He said they are being shelled all night long with some pauses, but he’s still had to go down to the subway station

(serving as a bomb shelter) and stay there overnight. I also have friends in Kyiv and Kharkiv. Everybody is writing that somebody is fighting. It’s very dramatic there.” Sergey was born and raised in Kharkiv and moved to Canada 23 years ago after graduating from the National University Kharkiv. He now works as a web developer. The last time he visited his family back home was for his mother’s funeral in 2017. “I didn’t expect the bond would be so strong that you feel this,” he continued. “When you see all these photos and videos from there and you see the places where you were with your friends and where you had a fun childhood. It’s definitely heartbreaking.” As tension built between the two countries, Sergey didn’t believe Russian President Vladimir Putin would follow through with his threat of military action. Now he thinks there will be no turning back.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Ladner’s Sergey Kulikov, right and his father Vladimir are pictured during a recent visit between the two in Kharkiv, Ukraine. “After the last moment, we all thought he was bluffing just to raise the stakes in his negotiations or demands to demilitarize Ukraine or whatever, but then after his recognition of those so called republics, it was quite

clear he was coming,” Sergey added. “I think he will now try to get it done to the very end. There’s been too much of an effort already.” Seeing the images on television of the horrors in Ukraine also hits close

to home for Delta Mayor George Harvie. Harvie is the grandchild of Ukrainian grandparents who fled their country to escape the ravages of the First World War. “I do remember

my grandparents. Unfortunately they passed away in the mid60s here in Vancouver,” he said. “I do remember seeing my grandfather’s medals. He was a decorated a solider. How he managed to escape Kiev in the early 20s to finally come to Calgary where my mom was born and then to Vancouver is mind boggling. We complain about missing a flight somewhere versus what they went through. They didn’t talk about it much, but my middle name is Vasily, which is after my grandfather and my first name George is from my other grandfather who came from Scotland, but it really touches my soul when I think of my relatives. “I did get a family tree done by a group here in Delta, on both sides, and it was really interesting to see the family chain. I was hoping to travel there and actually do a river cruise. Maybe I will still get to do that, but my hopes are diminishing. CONTINUED: see P 7

River Road residents rally against cell phone tower IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

River Road residents are rallying to have their voices and concerns heard as an application for a proposed cell phone tower begins to make its way through the City of Delta. The application is for a proposed telecommunications tower at 5871 60th Ave. The application has been submitted by Cypress Land Services Inc. on behalf of Freedom Mobile Telecommunications. The proposed facility would include a 30.5 m (100 foot) tower enclosed by a 10m x 10m chain-link fence compound. The application includes equipment cabinets, eight antennas, two microwave dishes and a 1.5m lightning rod. A development application sign recently went up on the proposed site, which set off alarm bells of many of the surrounding residents. Wade German is the spokesperson for the concerned residents. He said when the sign was posted, residents started contacting mayor and council and began a petition. “We’re concerned because the proposed location is in the middle of a long-standing eagle habitat, and that it might in some way disturb them,” said German. “Specifically, we are talking about the parcel of land in the ALR bordered by 60 Ave., River Road and the Millennium Trail, and the trees bordering the Delta Pacific Seafoods facility.” German said near the back

In breeding season, eagle courtship rituals (a.k.a. “death spirals”) occur over the field, and actual mating can be observed in the trees. At the height of breeding season this year (February), nearly 80 eagles were observed at one time in the trees, and also standing in the field, he said. “From a standpoint of stewardship, the majority of homeowners and residents in this neighbourhood do not want the tower to be placed in that field,” he said. “We believe there is no good reason to bring even the slightest amount of disturbance upon the eagles in this area. We want the developer to choose another location for their tower,

one far removed from the eagle habitat.” German and his fellow residents brought their concerns to David Hancock from the Surrey-based Hancock Wildlife Foundation. Hancock is a renowned biologist who has been studying eagles in B.C. for more than 60 years. He also monitors eagle nests in Delta. “Cell towers have a very negative affect on eagles (and other raptors),” Hancock said. “The towers attract them to perch and even nest, which results in unproductive breeding activity.” He said this part of Delta is one of the most heavily populated and ecologically important eagle territories in North America and is one of the richest areas for bald eagle production. German has also con-

tacted the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) who said they have retrieved eagles that were harmed and killed by lightning rod fixtures on cell towers. Another of the concerns from the residents is that the tower will increase the odds of attracting lightning strikes directly into the habitat — which could, of course, occur at a time when it is heavily populated. German and the residents are working on a petition that they will be delivering to the City of Delta, along with documentation from Hancock and others to back up their claims and concerns. Delta’s director of planning Marcy Sangret said public notification has gone out in the mail to the area residents with an opportunity to provide comments and feedback to Delta by March 18. Sangret said the application is in its early stages. “Once we receive all of the residents’ comments, we will include those in our report to council along with our own review of the application based on our telecommunications policy,” she said. Sangret said there is no timeline on when the staff report will go to council. She said a public hearing on the application is not required, but that council does have an option to ask staff to hold a public hearing. German is hopeful that a public hearing will be held, as he feels more residents in Delta would like to have that forum to express their concerns.

Ladner man with terminal cancer on a mission to help the B.C.’s vulnerable population MARK BOOTH

every single day and he just wishes he was supported by better COVID safety guidelines. It was back in 2016

Ladner’s Jeremy Franta, in a photo here with his family, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer, in 2016. He is now campaigning on better safety for the province’s vulnerable population amid COVID-19, including N95 masks to be worn in hospitals.

chemotherapy and stem cell treatment with a positive outlook. “I don’t dwell on treatments. I look forward to the next barbecue or day trip. I really love life and I don’t want to die,” he said. Being immunocompromised has resulted in also dealing with a highlevel of anxiety for the past two years in fear of being struck by COVID19. His family is doing everything to provide the safest possible environment for him, including his daughters staying home and doing their school work online. He just wishes, however, that the provincial government was doing more. “Unfortunately, I am one of the ‘select’ group in British Columbia of approximately 15,000 plus of extremely vulnerable persons. There are another 350,000 clinically vulnerable, 900,000 over the age of 65 and 173,000 youth under the age of five, also considered most vulnerable to COVID-19 sickness,” explained Franta. “This accounts for 25 percent of B.C.’s population, not including their countless friends and family and all the amazing health workers who stand by their sides. “We are left to fend for ourselves in the pandemic without the tools to do so. It is clear

a huge group of British Columbians being left behind who are way more susceptible to greater risk of death, sickness than the leaders of the province wish you to believe.” Franta’s concerns includes the ban of N95 masks in hospital settings. He encounters this every time he makes a trip to Vancouver General Hospital for treatment where he can only wear a medical grade surgical mask that is provided by the hospital. “Seriously, can you believe a terminally ill patient is asked to change a far superior N95 mask to a surgical mask at the front of the hospital where every person in the whole place walks through?” continued Franta. After nearly two years of hospital visits amid COVID, Franta admits he has found ways to work around the rules, including wearing a medical grade mask, on top of his N95 when he arrives for his appointments, however, he says many of the vulnerable won’t make the same kind of effort. “You find a way to trick the system and find a way to make shortcuts, but now I’m speaking for a lot of people that don’t even bother going through that effort. I’m trying to make difference,” he said.

100 YEARS CONTINUED from P 1 “To feel what those people are going through, and the horror, this is so painful. It puts a black cloud over our whole world.” Andrew Neufeld from Ladner’s Alongside You says this Russian invasion is eerily similar to what his family went through in Ukraine. “My family is originally from Ukraine. My grandparents were the last generation there,” he said. “They came to Canada during the Russian revolution. Farming was booming and the economy was booming, which is not a lot different to what is happening now. The Russians decided we don’t like the fact that Ukrainians are doing well, particularily the Mennonites. “This is what brought my family…who were literally chased by the Red Army to the border being fired at while trying to escape the country. We came to Canada, with literally nothing. My grandparents said ‘with just the shirts on their backs,’ and the only way they survived was because of the generosity of the

Canadian people who took them in as refuges.” Neufeld said he lived in Ukraine for three months between high school and starting his undergrad for bible study. “We spent three and a half months in the middle area of Ukraine, working in orphanage’s, teaching and other relief work,” he recalled. “They are an amazing people, but a lot of them, at that time, 20 years ago, people didn’t have a lot of resources and income. They didn’t have a lot then, so my major concern now is, do they have anything now and how are people going to escape? They are going to need a lot of help. Canada really has to consider and take responsibility to open our doors to refugees like we did with the Middle East. We opened up our doors, welcomed them in, set up programs for them. We need to do that for these people. Otherwise they won’t be able to get out.”

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

On Saturday night, a small candlelight vigil was held by about 10 or

so residents at Ladner’s Memorial Park, where the group met at the cenotaph. The City of Delta has changed their outside lights on municipal hall in Ladner and other Delta facilities to flash in blue and yellow in support of Ukraine. At the Delta Ice Hawks game on Sunday night, the entire 50/50 draw proceeds were donated to the Canadian Red Cross for the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal. The $3,140 included all of the winner’s portion being donated, along with Ice Hawks owner Eduard Ephstein matching the entire pot. With the Canadian government matching all Red Cross donations, the night’s grand total was $6,280. Mr. Mom’s Catering World, based out of East Delta Hall, has announced 10 percent of its food proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Ukraine Foundation. Featuring Ukrainian favourites, it is open Tuesdays and Sundays (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) for takeout and also takes online orders at mrmomscateringworld.com.

T

IAN JACQUES

he images and stories coming out of Ukraine the past few weeks have been sad and shocking. A needless and unjust war from a ruthless power monger has put the whole world on edge. Here in Delta, when we reached out on social media to interview residents with ties or family connections to Ukraine, the response was swift as people were more than willing to offer their thoughts. Sergey Kulikov from Ladner is watching his homeland crumble. He told that his father Vladimir, who in his hometown of Kharkiv, has been forced into the subway station, which is serving as a bomb shelter, at night to get away from the bombings. His childhood friends have taken up arms and joined the fight for their country. His story is heartbreaking. My friend Andrew Neufeld also told us about his family and how they literally escaped with the clothes on their backs during the Russian Revolution. He said this invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin is eerily similar to what his family went through when they fled Ukraine for Canada. Delta Mayor George Harvie has seen and heard this story before, as his grandparents fled Ukraine during the First World War. He put it well in our interview that we might complain about trivial things such as missing a flight and then we see another homeland under attack, their homes and livelihoods destroyed and it really puts things into perspective. These past two years have been a trying time as we have all faced different struggles and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. But none of what we, or I for that matter, have faced comes even close to what the Ukrainian people are faced with now. It makes putting on a mask and getting a vaccine seem very trivial.

Last week there was a story published online in the Optimist that reflected on the findings of yet another climate change flooding scenario. In this one, Vancouver was listed as one of 36 cities around the globe that would be impacted by major flooding should global temperatures rise by 3 degrees Celsius in 80 years. This past Monday, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) produced an equally alarming report in which food production was tabled into the equation. It is noted in the IPCC report that there could be “chronic water scarcity” in the future and that “water shortages will put enormous pressure on food production and increase the world’s already dire food-security challenges.” Too much of it or not enough of it, salt or fresh water are critical components within the climate change equation. Climate based finance

seems to be directed to mitigation measures rather than adaptation strategies. In the case of British Columbia, last week’s budget had no specific mention of dike construction or maintenance. There was money allocated to repair damage from the flooding last fall and the government is going to create a year round wildfire service team that could also assist with flooding and other climate related outcomes. Separate from emergency disaster response, more money has apparently been earmarked for climate change preparedness and adaptation. A formal plan to that effect was only completed last June and is still in draft form. A “Lower Mainland Dike Assessment Final Report” that was submitted to the Ministry of Forests, Land And Natural Resource Operations in 2015 highlights some troubling information within its executive summary. The report analyses 74 dikes in the region and broke those main dikes into 118 dike seg-

ments. These dikes have been built over a period of several decades to variable standards. Within these segments it was found that 13 per cent of them had fair to good integrity, a whopping 69 per cent of the segments were in the poor to fair category and 18 per cent were unacceptable to poor. These numbers are not overly confidence inspiring, that is for sure. In the report, the diking system in Abbotsford was deemed to be “substandard and needed to be updated.” That was six years ago. The Province sets the standards for dike safety, but local communities are responsible for the cost of maintenance and repairs which by nature are prohibitively expensive. I can certainly understand how governments feel hesitant to pull the trigger on such enormous expenditures, but waiting and hoping is probably not the best adaptation strategy to follow. The sooner government, and perhaps industry, can engage in a process of collaboration, the better off we will all be.

A plea to please slow down

Editor: Last week my husband and I were walking the dyke at the south end of 72nd near the golf course. From behind us came three guys on electric bikes going what seemed to be a high rate of speed. They raced passed us

and although we were not in any immediate danger we were startled. More often than not people do not warn you that they are behind you and are about to pass. I am not against e-bikes, however, I am concerned that someone will be struck and the

consequences will be dire. Families, individuals, dogs and horses use this area. It truly is a pleasurable place. Please remember that using a motor vehicle on the dyke is a privilege. Please slow down and think of others. D. Gunter

Cancer Society deserves praise Editor: The Cancer Society deserves praise for its DRY FEB campaign: it shines light on the role that alcohol--wine, whisky, champagne, beer et al--plays in the development of the cancers we suffer. I hope that the societies and foundations that represent our other organs--heart, liver, pancreas, intestinal tract, breast et al--join the Cancer Society’s campaign. And let’s prod our governments to force the alcohol industry to adopt labeling and promotion

that informs us of the dangers that its drug poses in the same ways that the tobacco and pharmaceutical industries inform us of the bad effects of their products. Some believe that government would never come down on the booze industry because it earns money off regulating it; however, given our ballooning debt and current deficits, doing all we can to reduce alcohol use would reduce the costs of treating the many serious diseases caused in whole or in part by alcohol. Sadly, our young

believe that alcohol is a safe drug because government regulates it and sells it: government regulates it--and in effect sanctions it--because alcohol caused the same grief during prohibition that illegal drugs are causing us today: bootleg alcohol that killed rapidly instead of slowly, bad booze that blinded-the justification for legalizing booze was just as tortuous as the move to legalize the killer drugs being trafficked today. Regulated alcohol is merely a slower poison that its other forms. Greg J. Edwards

Restore Fonyo’s Order of Canada

Editor: I am writing to ask that the Order of Canada, which was given to Steve Fonyo in the mid-1980’s, should be returned to him posthumously. I believe that when his Order of Canada was taken away from him, Steve Fonyo was judged too harshly by other people in positions of power, who didn’t fully understand the disease

processes of drug and alcohol addiction. Hopefully most of us are all that much more enlightened, due to the tragedy that is the current opioid crisis, and would now have more compassion for someone in his situation. Please know that many Canadians thought that taking away the Order of Canada, from Steve Fonyo, was wrong.

And that if we, as a society, had been more compassionate towards him, then he may still be alive today. It’s time to recognize Steve Fonyo again, for his great accomplishment, in continuing Terry Fox’s legacy. It’s time to give the Order of Canada back to him, in an official capacity, because he deserved it. A. Cameron

A horrible idea that must be stopped The following letter was sent to the Province of B.C. and copied to Delta Optimist Re: B.C. prepares to remove some housing approval powers from local governments: minister Dear Messrs. Horgan and Eby We will be succinct, as we know that you are both busy people.

This is a horrible idea, one that should be dropped immediately. It is difficult enough to get our local council to listen to concerns regarding traffic congestion, noise pollution, loss of green space, etc. We absolutely do not need some faceless bureaucrat in Victoria making decisions that affect our homes and

neighbourhood, especially since we will not even have the recourse of the ballot box. While we realize you regard our riding (Delta) as a lost cause, please consider both our votes and financial support lost if you proceed on this course. Denis J Bridger and Sylvia Denz

Delta facilities, programs and events returning DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

The light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel seems to be visible, and the City of Delta’s facilities, programs and events will soon be reflecting that following the province recently lifting some restrictions. Though some changes have already taken place, like removing capacity limits for Aquafit, dropin fitness and weight rooms across Delta recreation facilities, more changes are scheduled for the coming months. “Looking at our [case] counts, Delta is extremely low. We’re moving in the right direction, and we need to get back to where were before, [while] follow-

ing the provincial health guidelines and orders. People are exhausted ... it’s been two long years,” says Delta Mayor George Harvie. “The only problem we may have [with capacity limits lifting in exercise and fitness facilities] is a lack of staffing for some of our recreational facilities, especially in aquatics right now. There’s a shortage of lifeguards and a shortage of actual training opportunities to become a lifeguard throughout all of Metro Vancouver.” In an emailed response to the Optimist, Delta’s Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Carmen Gonzalez gave an overview of what Delta residents can enjoy now and in the near future, following the Feb.

Ease of COVID restrictions paves way for weddings and other large gatherings MARK BOOTH

Delta businesses have been dealing with a flurry of interest since B.C. health officials easedCOVID restrictions last month on indoor gatherings such as weddings and special events. “The phones are ringing off the hook with new event inquiries,” said Sue Carlile, general manager of Tsawwassen Springs, which features a ballroom, Pat Quinn’s Restaurant and an 18-hole golf course. “People are anxious to book their events that have been postponed for two years. Our spring and summer are already quite busy with events in the ballroom.” Russell Pohl’s Mr. Mom’s World Catering oversees operations and

bookings at East Delta Hall. The historic Ladner Trunk Road venue has been under repair since a water pipe break back in December resulted in some significant damage. It will bustling when it reopens. “Once we get totally re-opened, which I would say would be midMay, from that point on we around 85 percent booked,” said Pohl. “Our inbox has been inundated. I would say we’re already 10 to 15 percent booked for next year alone.” Over the past 24 months, Pohl pivoted his business to create programs featuring his Ukrainian specialty foods. It’s become so popular that he plans on continuing the sales in some form even when the hall is

buzzing with events again. “We’re extremely blessed that we had the opportunity to be able to do that. Many caterers didn’t have that option,” continued Pohl. “I think we’re going to keep the majority of those programs because we feel extremely blessed by the community that continued to support us.” As full capacity events are being rapidly booked, the scramble is on to find more employees. It’s no easy task when many left the industry two years ago. “Yes we anticipate the hiring process to be quite challenging with the labor shortage,” added Carlile. “We are presently training new culinary staff and will be hiring and training staff for our ballroom events.”

Delta school district receives additional $4.045 million in provincial funding DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

With the highest enrolment numbers the province has seen since 2004, the B.C. government is distributing an additional $204 million across public school districts to support teachers, students and supporting staff. A news release notes this funding increase is in addition to the $6.3 billion already being provided and is based off an increase of more than

10,500 students’ enroling in public schools this past September. However, the Delta school district isn’t one that saw jumps in enrolment. Their enrolment numbers actually decreased this school year by 127 and are at a total of 15,643 students currently, according to district communications director Cathryn Tucker. “[The decrease in enrolment] would have resulted in a funding

decrease of approximately one million at the prior years per pupil amounts. However, to cover increases in labour settlement costs, the province increased 2021/22 per pupil amounts by 4.3 per cent,” she wrote in an email to the Optimist. The result was the district receiving an additional $4.045 million. “Increased funding for schools to support enrolment growth is part of the province’s commitment to provide the

best possible educational experience for students, while providing teachers and support staff the resources they need to deliver world-class education,” said the province. Of the province’s $204 million funding increase, $69.6 million is going towards students with disabilities, $7.5 million is being targeted for Indigenous education and $3.7 is going towards English and French language learning at schools throughout the province.

“The overall number of students in B.C. increased this year to over 667,000, the highest since 2004. This includes a net increase of about 10,400 students who moved to B.C. from outside of the province. In addition, there was a net increase of nearly 1,000 students moving from independent to public education this past September,” reads the release. Meanwhile, the Delta school district is about

to begin developing their draft budget for the 2022/23 school year, and in the coming weeks, will be looking for community input about their priorities to provide to the Delta Board of Education at their budget input meeting. For the to-beannounced date and time of this meeting, keep an eye on the school district’s website, social media accounts and advertisements in the Optimist.

Coldest Night of the Year brings in more than $32,000 Deltassist surpasses fundraising goal DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Through Deltassist’s Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk event, the community fundraised $32,695 to support the non-profit dedicated to assisting vulnerable families and seniors in Delta. Community members and some of Delta’s political leaders joined Deltassist at the inperson walk on Saturday night, Feb. 26, including Delta Mayor George Harvie, Coun. Dylan Kruger, Delta MP Carla Qualtrough and Delta South MLA Ian Paton. “A pleasure to attend this year’s Coldest Night of the Year walk in support of @DeltassistCares – We are lucky to have such an incredible group

in our community supporting those in need. Thank you to all those who came out in support – together we raised over $30,000,” said Kruger in a post on Twitter. Community sponsors, 114 registered walkers spread out across 19 teams and 10 volunteers made it all possible for the non-profit to surpass their $30,000 goal, which was something the organization had been concerned about after decreased participation for last year’s virtual event. This year, walkers had the choice between a two km or five km walk that started and ended at Ladner’s Cedar Park Church, and those who fundraised more than $150 received a bright yellow CNOY toque to keep

them cozy on their routes. Qualtrough acknowledged the less-than-ideal weather conditions that walkers saw that evening in her Twitter post, writing, “It was a rainy night in Delta, but that didn’t dampen our spirits as we gathered for #cnoy22, walking to support @ DeltassistCares and to raise funds to help people experiencing homelessness in our community.” Paton also took to Twitter to praise Deltans for coming together for such a good cause. The Coldest Night of the Year is an annual, national fundraising walk event that supports local charity partners who provide essential care and service to those experiencing homelessness, hurt and hunger.

Community Grow and give back through Earthwise webinar Would you like to learn more about growing food at home while

giving back to the community? All you need is a space to garden and the desire to get growing organically. The Earthwise Society Victory Garden program, which began in 2020 in response to COVID-19, provides support to help

participants get their home gardens started. In return, Victory Gardeners donate a portion of their harvest to those in need through the Delta Food Coalition. This year, Earthwise is welcoming new

Victory Gardeners with a free online workshop designed to teach participants how to utilize organic and sustainable gardening practices in their own yards. Seedsaving, organic pest control, mulching, soil care, rain barrels and

water-wise gardening are some of the topics covered in this informative one-hour session. The Victory Gardening 101: Grow and Give Back webinar is open to anyone who has a keen interest in gardening, no matter the experience level. Returning Victory Gardeners are also encouraged to attend, meet new gardeners, and share their experiences. Those interested in participating in the Victory Garden program will be given a free starter package containing a selection of seeds and an information sheet full of tips on how to help their gardens take root. Earthwise staff are available throughout the season to provide advice and support, and gardeners receive biweekly newsletters filled with growing tips and

recipes. And of course, gardeners will benefit by enjoying the fruits of their labour and the satisfaction that comes with being able to share it. Earthwise is expanding the Victory Garden program in 2022 by welcoming more participants than ever and connecting them with each other to build a supportive and interactive community. This year’s program will include regular checkins and group meetings, both virtual and in person, to provide Victory Gardeners with more opportunities to interact, share tips and celebrate their successes. Victory Gardens 101: Grow and Give Back will take place over Zoom on Saturday (March 5) from 11 a.m. to noon. To register, email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

Dancers from Ladner studio return to competition stage for first time in two years DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Ladner’s Studio West Dance is returning to in-person competitions, and though the pre-performance jitters are in full effect, students and staff are embracing the nerves after a two-year hiatus. The studio held a preview performance for its competitive dancers at the Genesis Theatre a couple of weekends ago in preparation, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience of family members, according to Studio West owner/ director Jyla Robinson. “The parents, they were just blown away. They were blown away with the creativity of the teachers and how much their children have grown over the last two years because they really haven’t seen them dance, either,” said Robinson. “They finally got to watch them dance on stage for the first time in two years.” The performance, though there were a few giggle-worthy hiccups along the way, was magical, she said. Dancers were back in their elaborate costumes, back on the stage with bright lights beaming down on them – and most importantly, there were people

watching and cheering them on in the audience, live and in-person, added Robinson. Robinson says the theatre was filled with happiness and an unmistakable feeling of hope. “It was emotional. For me, and the teachers and especially the dancers that have been with us for quite a few years, this is our passion, it’s our life, it’s our livelihood ... If it wasn’t for the competitive kids who live, sleep, eat and breathe dance, we probably wouldn’t have a studio anymore,” she says. This week, the studio will be competing in-person for the first time in two years, with several more competitions planned for the future in addition to some in-person performances. It’s a welcome change for both the dancers and staff after having to compete virtually last year, which involved recording performances and sending them off to be judged. “The kids never got that gratification of an audience. They did [these virtual competitions] – they got into costume and they did their routines – but there was nobody there watching, so, the dancers are – or, we all are – pretty excited to get back into it,” says Robinson.

Sidekick Players back on stage at Arts Centre March 10 The Sidekick Players are pleased to present their next production, Drinking Alone by Norm Foster and directed by Todd-Elliot Gates at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre opening, March 10. For as long as families have been around, these dysfunctional groups have been rich sources of both comedy and drama. In Drinking Alone, Canadian playwright Norm Foster plays it for all they’re worth resulting with a play that’s witty and wry, while taking in a band of human misery that runs from daddy issues and alcoholism to divorce and health crises. Drinking Alone, which debuted in 1998, follows the events of a disastrous family reunion between Ivan (Jeff Pannell), an overbearing father, and his two adult children, Joe (Terry Thomas) and Carrie (Cathy Collis). They have been semi-estranged since the father left their now-dead alcoholic mother 15 years ago. The play’s central conceit is Joe’s decision to hire a glamorous escort, Renée

TODD-ELLIOT GATES PHOTO

The Sidekick Players cast of Drinking Alone from left to right; Cathy Collis (Carrie), Dani-Rose Coates (Renee), Terry Thomas (Joe), Jeff Pannell (Ivan) and Sharlene Terrett (Phyllis). (Dani-Rose Coates), to pose as his fiancée for the evening, so he won’t seem like such a loser to his dad. To make things worse, Ivan brings along his new wife, Phyllis (Sharlene

Terrett) who tries to soften the atmosphere, but instead creates a lot of animosity from Ivan’s children. Though its dark subject matter might seem an invitation to grim and ironic humour,

Foster’s script is remarkably gentle in its frequent jokes. This is not the lightest Foster fare you’ll consume, but it is surely among his best pieces of work, taking the audience on an emotional roller-coaster from the opening moments to the final curtain. Drinking Alone runs from March 10 to April 2, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. on March 13, 20 & 27. Reservations must be made by calling 604-288-2415. Tickets are $20 for adults and $18 for seniors. COVID regulations are still in place with limited seating and vaccination passports must be presented upon arrival. Masks must be worn when entering the building. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for evening performances and at 1:30 p.m. for matinees. Sidekick wants to ensure that all patrons are kept safe at all times. Tsawwassen’s Madelaine Burnett is making good on her childhood dreams of pursuing dance as a career, and is doing so in New York City.

It was devastating, the prospect of giving up dancing after a lifetime of dedicating herself to it at Tsawwassen’s Deas Island Dance, recalls Madelaine Burnett. But years later, now holding down a professional dancing career in New York City and part of the Alison Cook-Beatty Dance Company, it turns out the SDSS grad had nothing to fear. Back in 2016, she auditioned for the NYC-based Alvin Ailey American Dance company, and to her delight, it landed her a spot in their school program. However, this also meant abandoning her original plan of taking her offered scholarship at the University of British Columbia for Kinesiology. “I was like, ‘You know what? I’ve already been sad for years leading up to this, at the potential of not dancing,’ so, I thought, ‘Okay, as a gap year, I’m going to go to New York and take one year to dance my

heart out, and then I’ll come back to study those plans … I told myself ‘If I get a sign, or if something tells me that I’m doing the right thing, I’ll stay,’” she recalls. The sign she’d been waiting for made itself known, loud and clear, through repeated scholarship offers that allowed her to stay with the Ailey School for three years before getting a job with Martha Graham’s second company, Graham 2, in 2018. There, she fell in love with the Graham technique – a modern dance technique that aims to expose “the depths of human emotion” through sharp, angular, jagged and direct movements, reads the company’s website. “It’s not a technique about being pretty, it’s a technique about being real ... the whole technique came from the idea of the human breath and the natural way that the human body moves ... it’s about showing the human,” explains Burnett. Modern dance also showed her a much more diverse, welcoming

space for dancers of all shapes and sizes, that up until that point, she hadn’t experienced while being submerged in the world of ballet. And as she dove deeper into the technique – including getting certified to teach it, in addition to her Royal Academy of Dance ballet teaching certification – she couldn’t stop thinking about how kids back in Tsawwassen don’t usually get to have their eyes opened, like she had hers. So, every visit back home to her home dance studio, Burnett is determined to bring a little bit of New York’s modern dance culture back with her, which she did while grounded in Tsawwassen for over a year from the pandemic. This year is Burnett’s first year of sustaining herself entirely off dancing professionally, and though it’s been tricky at points, she’s been loving it, especially because of all the gigs that she’s been taking on to spread awareness and education about different humanitarian causes.

Everyone welcome to worship with us 10:30 A.M. This Sunday John 19:17-27 Christ Caring from the Cross Guest Pastor: Bill Tuininga 中文主日崇拜 10:30 am

Have you ever noticed how God seems to be at work, changing lives and transforming people over there, somewhere else, somewhere where we are not? Even for those of us who have been going to church faithfully all our lives, we can appreciate on the one hand how God is active in the world, but on the other, we may wonder and yearn for that lightning bolt, crystal clear moment where God seems to be present. Transfiguration Sunday, often the Sunday the week before Lent, we read of such an encounter where God is somewhere else, other than where the real needs of people’s everyday lives are. Luke 9: 28-36 describes how Jesus takes three, just three of the disciples up to the mountain top to pray. While they are on the mountain, God’s

presence is known, and Jesus is transfigured before their eyes. It is an awe-inspiring moment, one that the three disciples cherish, so much so, that they want to erect a couple of tents and bask in this sense of glory longer. But what about the other nine disciples? The ones who do not get a mountain top experience, what about them? They are at the bottom

of the mountain carrying on their daily work as best they can. There is no mountain top experience where they can bask in God’s glory and consider erecting tents and relaxing. The more I think about this passage, the more I realize that we are more like the other nine, the ones at the bottom of the mountain rather than the chosen ones at the top. Mountain top experiences are great. But they do not happen all the time, and not everyone gets such an experience. Jesus reminds the three on the mountain that they need to go back down. They need to go down the mountain, join the others and continue their daily work. This passage teaches us that God does not only speak to us on mountain tops, rather God comes to us and transforms us in the ordinary of everyday.

sawwassen Place Dental has seen many unexpected changes in the last few years, not the least of which was a global pandemic. Navigating these changes has come with its challenges, but with a strong and loyal team, we’ve managed to push through and grow the practice even further. Some of the exciting new developments include the introduction of some new & advanced technology. Gone are the days of the painstaking process of taking impressions for procedures such as crown & bridge, night guards, Invisalign, and repairs to partial dentures to name a few. With the introduction of our new iTero scanner, we are able to scan a patients full arch and occlusion, replacing the traditional impression taking process. The iTero allows us to immediately send the scan directly to the lab within seconds. This not only saves us valuable time, but is much easier for patients who have a difficult time with impressions due to strong gag reflexes, limited opening, etc. Originally requiring a minimum of two to three days to reach #101-1530 56th Street, Tsawwassen, B.C. 604.943.7421

their destination, Invisalign scans are now received within seconds to minutes. We have brand new sterilization units, ensuring the highest standard of care for our patients. Finally our last hygiene room has recently been updated with a brand new Belmont chair, at last retiring the antiquated dental chair which has been in there since the inception of Tsawwassen Place Dental many years ago. We gladly accept new patients, and we look forward to seeing you at Tsawwassen Place Dental Clinic.

ounding Sarah Gallop Design Inc. (known as SGDI) in South Delta in 2009, was a natural melding of Sarah’s ambitions and the deep hearted connection she feels for this community. Having 5th generation roots in South Delta, there was never question where her business would be located, and having SGDI become a go-to for great design throughout Delta, she is proven to have made the best decision. Focusing on single family homes; the company began with design for renovations, followed by new home interior design, and finally stretched to encompass full home design for renovations and new homes. Despite residential construction being historically a male oriented trades environment, she sees women making a huge difference within the industry, both in the design and construction arenas. “My team is predominantly women, and I am happy to get to lead and mentor this great group of capable female talent. We elevate each other in our efforts towards bettering the lives of our clients, as we spend our days

together in creative collaboration.” Sarah remains committed to the community through her contributions and involvement with the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation - where she sits on the Board of Directors - and the City of Delta - where she currently sits on the Advisory Design Panel - and has also sat on the Heritage Advisory Commission and the Ladner Village Revitalization Advisory Committee.

am a Designated Paralegal at Delta Law Office, with a focus in family law. I am fortunate to be able to work and live in the community I call home. My goal is help my clients to resolve a separation, divorce, custody dispute, marriage agreement or – if unavoidable, litigation – as smooth and efficient as possible. Family law has taught me to put myself in my client’s shoes, and to consider what they need to improve their quality of life. I believe the practice of family law requires an understanding of my client and their perspective. I want to help people who are going through the most difficult times of their lives, to give them a chance to be heard. I have been mentored closely by senior

counsel who has showed me the importance of standing up for your community and assisting those who may not otherwise have access to justice. This has cemented my desire to become a community based lawyer, the next step in my legal career. I look forward to being part of and assisting the community of Delta for years to come.

fter 20 years in business, growing from 4 passionate women to over 60, Casbah Day Spa founder Nicole King is excited to open it’s third location in Tsawwassen Commons. Evolution developed from seeing a niche business outside of Casbah core business to produce a stand alone skincare and makeup boutique, along with makeup applications, facials, lashes and other medi skincare services. We continue to evolve with our education and treatment variations such as; Dermaplaning, Microneedling, Oxygeneo and Jet Peel technology, however our roots are in high quality skincare. High quality skincare starts with a meaningful, customized consultation and then a hands on educational facial application and treatment. Nicole created this unique approach by making express facials and makeup application redeemable in products purchased which is experiential, educational and more enriching. This has greatly contributed to their success. We hope everyone gets the chance to visit the new location and experience Evolution unique approach to premium skincare.

CO-FOUNDER

When we started in 2015, we wanted to do something different. We wanted to fill gaps in services, and we wanted to create a space that felt welcoming to our clients, and felt safe for everyone to be in. We know that people tend to feel more comfortable, and safe when they are represented in the leadership of an organization. One of our priorities was, and continues to be being led by women. We are so proud of the 19 women who lead us, drive our programming and services, and take care of our clients. We think that it’s important for us to both honour them as we celebrate Women in Business, and also ensure that our community knows our commitment to women in leadership. So, without further ado, we’d like to introduce you to the women on our team. We’re grateful for them, and proud of the work they do to support the community.

oming from a fifth-generation farming family Danielle and Alicia Guichon understand the importance of supporting and buying local produce. In 2001, beginning as the youngest vendors at The Ladner Village Market and carrying only 6-10 items, they eventually took their business to the roadside of Arthur Drive. On Arthur Drive, the girls built a strong following and both point out that ‘our customers want to support local farmers and local businesses from their community.’ Once the girls realized that the community had a strong desire to buy Delta grown crops, while in season, the idea for ‘Backroads’ bloomed. Moving forward a few years later, the want and need for ‘buying local’ is still as strong as ever. With the opening of their produce store, Backroads Family Farm Market, which now carries over 100 items, including their own farm fresh eggs, local bread, fresh cut flowers and other novelty goods, the focus remains on supporting local. Boundary Bay battle up next for Hawks Delta rallies to defeat Sockeyes in seven games to earn semi-final date with White Rock MARK BOOTH

Braedy Euerby couldn’t have picked a better time to produce his first shutout of the season. The 20-year-old from Ladner turned aside 27 shots to lead the Delta Ice Hawks to a dramatic 1-0 game seven victory over the Richmond Sockeyes on Monday night at Minoru Arenas. The Ice Hawks will now face the White Rock Whalers in the Pacific Junior Hockey League semi-finals starting this weekend. It was just a week earlier Euerby was chased early in the second period of game four when his team rallied for a 4-3 overtime win. The Sockeyes bounced back for a 4-1 victory two nights later to put Delta on the brink of elimination. That’s when GM and head coach Steve Robinson went back to Euerby for game six on Sunday. He had reacquired the former Vancouver Giants pros-

pect back in the fall for these kind of moments, knowing his team would be hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial championships come April. Euerby responded with a solid performance as the Ice Hawks cruised to an 8-1 win, setting the stage for game seven. He picked up where he left off 24 hours earlier to blank his former team over the final five periods of the series. “It was a sweet win no doubt,” said Robinson whose team has struggled at Minoru since losing the provincial gold medal game to the Sockeyes back in 2018. “I’m happy for the guys, especially Braedy. To overcome the tough start to the series and deliver two games to close it out was huge.” Few would have predicted the league’s second highest scoring team, with just one graduating player in the line-up, was capable of grinding out a 1-0 win. Yet Delta made Carson Merriman’s early second period goal stand as the

ey and will be a handful.” Coached by Ladner’s Jason Rogers, the Whalers’ first playoff series win in franchise history was a big one as they eliminated first place North Vancouver in six games with a 6-2 victory on Monday. The series will start Saturday night at

Centennial Arena in White Rock before shifting to Ladner for games two and three on Sunday and Tuesday. The Ice Hawks have home ice advantage thanks to their third place finish in the Tom Shaw Conference. Visit www. delta-optimist.com for regular series updates.

Trio of Storm A1 teams advance to this weekend’s PCAHA Final 4 playoffs There will be plenty of Storm watching this weekend thanks to impressive post-season runs by South Delta Minor rep A1 hockey teams. The Storm U18, U15 and U13 squads have all advanced to Pacific Coast Amateur Tier 2 Final Four playdowns where they will be looking to secure berths in their respective provincial championships, slated for later this month.

The U18 Storm will be in Port Coquitlam where they will be taking on Port Moody A1, Hollyburn A1 and hosts PoCo, beginning Friday night. South Delta defeated the Richmond A2 Jets 4-1 in a single-knockout game, then outlasted Chilliwack A2 in a fourpoint series in three games to secure its Final Four spot. It included a pair of shutout wins (3-0 and 4-0). The teams also battled to a 2-2 tie.

The U18 A2 provincials will take place in Campbell River. The U15 Storm will be at Sungod Arena in North Delta battling Vancouver Minor A1, Port Coquitlam A1 and Hollyburn A1 for a trip to the U15 Tier 2 provincials in Vernon. The locals advance by rallying to defeat Port Moody A1 in a four-point series, dropping the first game 5-2 before producing 4-2 and 3-1 victories.

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES My husband and I just recently purchased our second home, this was our second time using Tyson and I’m sure it won’t be our last! Tyson and the Fraser Elliott Team consistently went above and beyond in every step of the process and helped us understand everything that was going on. They were extremely accommodating of our busy schedules and worked around the clock to make everything work. I had a lot of wants and needs for my new home and Tyson worked with us to make them all work! He has great rapport building skills, communication, time management and is so easy to approach and talk to. The Fraser Elliott group was able to help us list our home, sell and purchase a new home all within dates that lined up perfectly! We felt supported and comfortable the entire process and can’t recommend Tyson and the Fraser Elliott Group more! -J&K My wife and I would like to extend a huge and heartfelt thankyou to the team Natalie, Marilyn and Miranda for their hard work. For their professionalism and incredible commitment towards the sale of our townhouse unit. From the initial meeting, everything was made clear and great advice given in relation to all aspects of the sale. The team has in-depth knowledge of the local markets; they were extremely communicative and had infinite patience. Their marketing skills and aggressiveness are unmatched by anyone. We would definitely recommend them to anyone. - Melyn and Diana Yeo Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group/ The Firm did what two other Realtors could not during the worst possible times in BC and across Canada to sell real estate. They sold our home. We have met most of their team over the last year and found them to be personable, well motivated, intelligent and professional. My wife and I have no problem recommending them to anyone. - Happy Customer From our initial meeting with Fraser and his entire Team to the completion of the Sale of our Property we found the experience to be remarkable. The attention to detail, the timely communications and the terrific rapport equaled “Exceptional Service.” If you are looking for “Simply the Best” without hesitation we would recommend the Fraser Elliott Group. - Hilary & Joe Fraser Elliott and his team at The Firm are first class from start to finish. All staff were highly professional and informative you can tell they are like a big family. We felt so comfortable throughout the whole process of buying our home. Thanks Firm family for helping us find our dream home! - Lucic Family We had a very good experience with the Fraser Elliott group. They delivered what they said they would. We got the full asking price. Philip Seal was our representative and I would use his services again. -Jaques M

Fraser Elliott Group/ The Firm did what two other Realtors could not. They sold our home during the worst possible conditions in BC and across Canada. My wife and I found their team focused, intelligent, motivated and professional. We definitely recommend people who provide the success that they in fact did. -Bill Fallow It's been a pleasure to work with Fraser and his team for the sale of our home. Having sold our 1st home we didn’t know what to expect but the entire team made the process seamless from end to end. Everything was presented and conducted in a professional manner and we were kept informed of all showings, progress and next steps along the way. Would definitely recommend the team to friends, family and colleagues as they were a pleasure to work with - Aman and Sandy Atwal We had a great experience selling our home with Philip from the Fraser Elliott Group. He was professional and personable and negotiated a good price. We look forward to his guidance as we purchase our next home. -Karin Giesbrecht Fraser Elliott sets the tone in the industry and is a dedicated individual committed to excellence in the real estate market. Thanks Fraser for setting an example! You rock. -Impact Pressure Washing We are thankful we chose the Fraser Elliott group to help sell our Tsawwassen home. The entire team worked like a well oiled machine. Every aspect of our sale was handled in a very professional manner and we were always kept informed throughout the process. They made us feel confident in their commitment to selling our house, in their awareness of market trends and in their professional and ethical standards. We highly recommend them to any buyers and sellers who want knowledgeable, friendly and effective service. - L. Dhillon We had made the decision to retire and move back to Ontario. We were not familiar with Realtors in the market however knew that Fraser Elliott was the listing agent on our existing home. We interviewed a few agents and Philip and the Fraser Elliott team far exceeded their competitors in terms of knowledge and putting together a marketing plan for our home during very tough times. Once the home was listed it sold within a few days far exceeding our expectations. We were very happy with their services and would recommend to others. - John and Pat E Fraser, Just wanted to say Michelle + Phil and the rest of your team crushed it for us. Sold our place at a price we were happy to get, and got us into a dream area of Tsawwassen. We’re pumped. Just wanted to let you know how happy we were with the whole process and that we couldn’t feel anymore like we made the right decision going with you and your group. - Mike & Jen

Thanks to the Fraser Elliott team for the sale of our home. Always friendly and enjoyable to talk to. We always got an update as to whom the house was shown to and the response of the clients. -Astrid Bader Super happy with the Fraser Elliott Group on the sale of our commercial office space. They brought us an offer within a few months and closed the deal for us. Thank you! - Murat Erbatur / Deborah Jones When we decided to put our house on the market we started taking a really close look at Realtors in our area and how they work. It’s such a competitive market at the moment and having the right tools is crucial, especially when taking about selling a house, the largest single investment of our lives. We wanted to make sure that we had a motivated team that was also connected to todays market and marketing tools. We chose the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group, but we were surprised by our experience, in a great way. We found the team very responsive, always communicating their needs clearly and always willing to work with us to ensure the best experience in this emotional decision and totally professional at all times. We could not have asked for a better team or a better experience. Our house was sold in around 3 weeks, after having multiple offers and the service did not stop there. The team at Fraser Elliott Estate Group take a personal interest in ensuring that your questions are answered and also making helpful suggestions regarding the legal aspects and relocating. They are the best!! - Mark and Julie Austen at Fraser Elliott Group was recommended to us by a relation, as we knew no one in the real estate business in the lower mainland being 800 km away. We had to deal long distance through the whole process. The experience was seamless. Excellent communication and the whole process was very easy and efficient. We felt very well looked after during the one month we were listed until the property sold. Austen provided excellent service regardless of the time of day. We are very happy with this experience and would highly recommend this Firm. - Ian It has been a great experience working with you. All of you were always very professional and attentive, looking out for our best interest. We want to thank you for all your hard work. - Sincerely, José & Aurora The Fraser Elliott group did it again! This team rocks. I jumped on an opportunity and they promptly helped with a 10 day close! They were on top of everything and with their help, I’m now in a beautiful new home and I couldn’t be happier. Cheers to Fraser, Phil and the entire team. You guys really made it happen for me. Much love! - Brandon Smith

OBITUARIES

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT MASON, Pamela Margaret March 27, 1954 − February 14, 2022 A BEAUTIFUL LIFE

BEATON, Mel August 1, 1961 − February 22, 2022 It is with immense heartbreak that we announce the passing of Mel Beaton, following a battle with cancer. Mel was a husband, father, brother, son, and a friend to many. He is survived by his wife Anna, son Jared, daughter Kiana (Rob), parents Jim and Wanda, brothers Tim (Cori) and Rick, and nephews. Born in New Westminster, Mel was the second of three children. Mel spent his early years on Panorama Ridge in Surrey, British Columbia, until 1979 when he set off to Vancouver to study at UBC. Mel completed his Bachelor of Commerce in 1985 and obtained his Bachelor of Law in 1986. Mel took great pride in funding his schooling through working various entrepreneurial jobs. In 1981, Mel and his UBC buddy started Shaughnessy Computer Systems, which developed and sold computer chips. They had big−name clients (IBM, Bell and Howell, the Government of Canada) all while they were still in university. They helped US− mega company TRW with making electronic chips, which now supply chips to most cell−phone makers − there is a hint of Mel in your iPhone! Their venture became part of Data Key, Limited. From there, they helped found Squirrel Systems, a company making first−networked point−of−sale systems for fine dining. Upon graduation from law school, Mel went on to article in Prince George in 1986 for Heather and Co. After a short stint, he returned to Vancouver in 1987 and began his career as a lawyer working at Varty and Co., and then Altman Khan Zack in 1988, where he became a partner before splitting off to form Hammerberg Altman Beaton & Maglio in 1999, now Hammerco Lawyers LLP. His career spanned some 35 years, 20 of which he led the business law and real estate practice areas as a trusted expert. Mel was passionate about community service and gave much of his time and energy to Education without Borders. Mel and Anna met in 1982 and married in 1988. They had two children, Kiana and Jared. Mel and Anna moved to Ladner in 1997, where Mel was deeply involved in his children’s activities. When Kiana joined the Ladner Stingrays Swim Club, Mel became a Swimming Official. When Jared began playing football with the South Delta Rams, Mel became the game−day announcer, making up clever nicknames for each child on the team. Mel served as President of the Rams from 2010−12 and commissioner of the VMFL from 2012−15. He also provided legal services for and sponsored the Delta Islanders, where Jared played lacrosse. Mel was a wonderful and much−loved colleague, friend, brother, husband, and father. He loved his family and loved his work. He had an energetic and adventurous spirit and was always thinking of his next great "dad joke." Mel made the world a better place and will be greatly missed. A celebration of life will be held at Tsawwassen Springs on Saturday, March 12th at 2:00 PM. Proof of vaccination is required by the venue.

And if I go, while you’re still here... Know that I live on, Vibrating to a different measure Behind a thin veil you cannot see through. You will not see me, So you must have faith. I wait for the time when we can soar together again, Both aware of each other. Until then, live your life to the fullest And when you need me, Just whisper my name in your heart ...I will be there. Emily Dickinson

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
