Construction is well underway in Ladner on the new covered sport court.

Covered sport court will be a game changer for lacrosse in Delta MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It definitely is a case of short-term pain for longterm gain for the sport of lacrosse in Delta. Typically, the minor box lacrosse association would be making full use of the Ladner Outdoor Box at this time of year in preparation for the coming season. However, it is unavailable as construction continues to transform the venue into a yearround covered and lighted sports court. The $2.1 million project is expected to be completed in early June and no sport organization in the city will benefit more than lacrosse.

“It’s going to give us the opportunity to grow and have more technical training year round. It’s bringing all the things to Delta that our (rivals) have in their communities. So now we can compete with those top clubs,” said Delta Lacrosse president Dave Glover. According to Delta parks and recreation director Carmen Gonzalez, there could be other sport amenities added in the future but the project was more about giving the lacrosse community a yearround all-weather facility. It’s also expected to greatly benefit the Junior Islanders program that typically is renting floor

space elsewhere, including the Langley Events Centre. The senior Ladner Pioneers can get a head start on their season too. “The aim of having this is increasing our dry floor space availability throughout the year. That’s important for us,” said Gonzalez. “We’ve heard from lacrosse that there’s a need there and think it’s going to be a great project that’ll provide more space for them. “It’s really focused on covering (the existing) lacrosse box. Because we aren’t making any changes to the surfacing. It’s really intended for and primary use as dry floor space. Of

course when they are out of season and what not, we’ll be looking at what options are there but right now the focus is just on putting a cover over the facility.” Glover added the venue could be utilized when Delta hosts the B.C. Pee Wee (U13) Championships for all tiers July 7 to 10. Games are expected to be scheduled throughout the city including Sungod Arena in North Delta. In the meantime, the association is getting help from the City of Delta to accommodate pre-season training with limited venues, especially with ice still in arenas. “Our vice-president

of minor lacrosse Renee Close has done a really good job of organizing everything,” added Glover. “We’re managing to use the outdoor box at Delview Park in North Delta and the Tsawwassen outdoor box. Delta has helped us out a ton by bringing in temporary lights and generators so we are able to have those (later) practices.” There will also be some initial juggling with home games as the Ladner Leisure Centre won’t be available until late April as ice will remain in place longer than normal for the Cyclone Taylor Cup junior “B” provincial championships.

NOTICE OF PROPOSAL TO ISSUE A TEMPORARY USE PERMIT (LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT SECTIONS 493 AND 494)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, at a meeting to commence at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022 in the North Delta Centre for Arts – Theatre, 11425 84 Avenue, Delta, BC, Delta City Council will consider a resolution to issue TEMPORARY USE PERMIT LU009329. Some members of Council may participate in this meeting by electronic means (audio, visual or other communication facilities). Details of the Temporary Use Permit are as follows: OWNER:

Delta students returned to the classroom Monday following spring break under eased COVID-19 safety restrictions. The most notable is that wearing a mask is now optional. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry earlier this month announced that students and staff would have the option of choosing to wear a mask once they returned from spring break. However, she also noted mandates could return if a new wave of infections occurred. In a letter to parents in the final week of the Delta School District’s spring break, Superintendent Doug Sheppard outlined the revised health and safety guidelines. Those include schools

being allowed to return to classroom and learning environment configurations and activities that best meet learner needs and preferred educational approaches, although schools should still consider strategies to create space between people. As far as school gatherings and events for parents and spectators, they are to not exceed 50 per cent capacity and proof of vaccination should not be implemented. Events can return to 100 per cent capacity when the public health order on gatherings and events is lifted in schools. Schools should also make every effort to avoid venues that place additional requirements that could prevent a person from being able to participate. Schools should also make every effort to avoid locations that place additional requirements

that could prevent a person from being able to participate in a field trip. Schools can also return to routine sign in and sign out practices. Despite the lifting of restrictions, the district is encouraging everyone in schools to continue daily health checks, stay at home when sick and practice good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette to help minimize the risk of transmission, Sheppard noted. “In addition, we encourage our staff and students to recognize that everyone has different comfort levels with regards to the wearing of masks and face coverings, and to be respectful of others’ choices,” Sheppard added. Clint Johnston, president-elect of the BC Teachers’ Federation, has stressed the importance of continuing to wear a mask.

Port of Vancouver saw 146.5 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2021 VFPA releases year-end stats DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Last year was a busy and challenging one for the Port of Vancouver. According to their year-end statistics released last week, the VFPA observed a six per cent increase in 20-foot container movement, a four per cent increase in import volumes and a one per cent increase in overall cargo volume, compared to 2020 numbers. The statistics also show that 146.5 million metric tonnes of cargo passed through the Port of Vancouver, which included a record 3.7 million 20-foot equivalent units composed of 1.9 million imports and 1.7 million exports. These increases highlight the need for more

capacity, says VFPA President and Chief Executive Officer Robin Silvester. “For people living in Delta, [the biggest thing] to understand is how much of Canada’s trade moves through the terminal in Delta, between Annacis Island, West Shore and Deltaport – and hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, Roberts Bank Terminal 2,” he says. Despite the Port’s record year in containers, they also saw declines. They observed a 13 per cent decrease in grain compared to 2020 data, following a drought in Western Canada that diminished grain production for the second half of the year. Crediting global supply chain issues and weather events, they also saw vol-

ume declines for fertilizer (13 per cent decrease), chemicals (nine per cent decrease), lumber (14 per cent decrease), wood pulp (20 per cent decrease) and processed food (22 per cent decrease). “The 2021 container story, while a record year for the fifth year in a row, is a warning on two front – a looming container capacity shortage and the Lower Mainland’s industrial land shortage crisis,” said Silvester. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is the federal agency responsible for the stewardship of the Port of Vancouver – which extends from Roberts Bank and the Fraser River up to and including Burrard Inlet – and is accountable to the federal minister of transport.

Sea lion rescued near Deltaport IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A sea lion has a new lease on life after it was rescued from precarious circumstances last Thursday morning near Deltaport. According to Todd Hauptman, communications manager with the Vancouver Aquarium, members of the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre worked with the Department of Fisheries

and Oceans (DFO) to assist with an entangled adult female Steller sea lion. Hauptman said the sea lion was found on March 24 on a buoy at Westshore Terminal at Deltaport, and was seriously entangled with a plastic packing strap around her neck. “The team had to make several incisions to remove the deeply embedded strap. It was evident that she would have been suf-

fering for months and likely would have died had the team not intervened,” said the statement from the Vancouver Aquarium. “The team cleaned the wound and treated her with antibiotics. The sea lion recovered well and DFO drone footage captured her swimming away in the water.” For more on this story and to see video from the rescue, check out our website at: www.deltaoptimist.com.

Tsawwassen cannabis store proposals go to public hearing SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

City council on Monday granted preliminary approval for two South Delta cannabis retail shops to send the applications to a public hearing. One of the rezoning applications is by Queensborough Cannabis Co. for a vacant retail outlet at a strip mall at 1274 56 St. in Tsawwassen. Located at the northeast of the intersection of 56 Street and 12 Avenue, the outlet would include a 1,163-squarefoot retail storefront and 710-square-feet for office and storage. The application

includes the cannabis dispensary being open to the public seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. The applicant is proposing to undertake minor site improvements to comply with recommendations by Delta Police. The other application for a non-medical cannabis shop is by Imagine Cannabis Co. for a unit at Bayside Village Mall at 1179 56 St. in Tsawwassen. Located by the southwest of the intersection of 56 Street and 12 Avenue, that dispensary would include 420 square-feet of retail storefront and just over 100-square-feet for office and storage.

The application is also for that store to be open to the public seven days a week from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. Delta council, during their discussion at Monday’s meeting, expressed concern about the proposed operating hours for the dispensaries, agreeing that the city would only agree to reduced operating hours. The province’s Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch only grants approvals for dispensaries if applications are endorsed by local governments. Delta has not set the dates yet for the public hearing on the two proposals.

South Delta Food Bank continues to feed the need Drop by Wednesdays to register and pick up a hamper DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

With rising costs of living and all the stresses and pressures that come with it, volunteers at the South Delta Food Bank want to remind Ladner, Tsawwassen First Nation and Tsawwassen residents that they are there to support those in need. Registration and hamper distribution is Wednesday mornings between 8:30 and 11 a.m., and for folks 65-years-old and up, you can register ahead of time to take the Delta Senior Bus there and back if you need a ride. Pre-COVID, the food bank ran their distribution hours later in the morning and people would stay to socialize and have a coffee. However, since the pandemic began, they have moved to a more streamlined, in-and-out model BC A

and have decided to keep it that way because of how well-received it has been. “When COVID started, we thought that our numbers would go up, but actually ... our numbers went down, and I think that has something to do with the government giving out CERB money to people that weren’t working,” says coordinator Joe Van Essen. “I think we dropped from 85 families to about 60, 55 – so, it was very quiet, especially the first year. “Now, our numbers are back up into the 90s. Especially the last month, it has come up a lot. And I have a feeling it has something to do with inflation that we see everywhere – at the pump, with food prices, and rent is so expensive here in B.C.” The South Delta Food Bank has been fortunate to receive generous, steady donations before

Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES

T

here are heroes among us in Delta. They don’t wear caps. They can’t fly. They don’t have X-ray vision, or spin a web from their fingers, and you won’t be seeing them up on a movie screen anytime soon. No, these heroes are our first responders – our police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, doctors and nurses...those on the front lines keeping us safe. This week in the pages of the Optimist in print and online, we salute our first responders for everything that they do. For always being there in times of crises and emergency. For their extra hours of sacrifice, for the strain those sacrifices have on their families and friends when they are not there for them, while they attend to others. The COVID-19 pandemic will be with us for a while longer. How much longer remains to be seen, but one of the lasting legacy effects of this pandemic is shining the spotlight even brighter on those who deserve it. In the beginning weeks of the pandemic, we all joined at 7 p.m. on our balconies, decks and sidewalks to bang pots and pans and cheer for our first responders. We also had, on occasion, a Sirens at 7 procession of first responders driving by Delta Hospital to salute and offer thanks to all of our doctors and nurses. And while we don’t recognize their efforts in these ways anymore, that should not diminish how much thanks and gratitude we owe each and every one of them. I’m looking forward to the days ahead as the restrictions continue to lift, where we as a community, can begin to enjoy many fun and festive community events where our first responders will be active participants. I know I will take that time to say thanks to a Delta Police officer or Delta firefighter and anyone else for all they have done during the pandemic and continue to do every day to keep us all safe.

Spring clean-up is back, but not as good a deal as it used to be

A

fter a two-year hiatus, spring cleanup returned this week. Two years ago, at the beginning of the pandemic, when we didn’t know what was going on and were afraid to leave our houses or talk to anyone lest they be contagious and susceptible to spreading the virus, the program was halted. But here we are, the end of March, emptying the storage and cleaning the garage, hoping that what has become a burden for me, becomes a useful item for someone else. There’s an old Army and Navy ad that reminds me of spring clean-up. A lady leaving the store is asked, ‘Do you shop at Army and Navy?’ ‘No,’ she replies. ‘Are you sure?’ ‘Yes.’ Too bad she’s carrying a couple A&N bags in her hands. Busted. Spring clean-up is a little like that. Few want to admit to picking up something alongside the road, but I’m not

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

afraid to say it – I saw lots of other people picking stuff up. Not me, them. When my kids were younger, we had a great time driving around looking for a diamond in the piles. Some of their most treasured toys were ‘recycled’, and when they grew out of them, we cleaned them up and put them out for another excited child to enjoy. It felt just as good giving it away as it did finding it in the first place. But, again, that was them picking up stuff. Not me. I was out walking the dog with my wife this past week-

end and we ran into some neighbours. As we chatted about all the stuff that was out, my neighbour said ‘I wonder if someone could outfit an apartment with the stuff they find?’ Knowing what we’ve put at the curb, I’m sure someone could. It won’t rival any of the home improvement shows, but it is better in someone else’s hands instead of the landfill. The rain put a bit of a damper on the fun over the weekend, as there weren’t as many people participating as before, but it was good to see it back, even though I was just noticing things as I was driving somewhere else. Very slowly. Then I stopped for fuel, and realized how expensive it can be looking for free stuff. Not that I’m looking… Brad Sherwin, MBA is a long-time resident of South Delta, and has over 30 years’ experience in marketing, public relations and business strategy. Could a dog park combine other needs? Editor: Re: Off leash enclosures among Delta parks 2022 projects (Optimist, Feb. 17) Being from a family of dog lovers, I totally agree with designated off-leash parks. Paterson Park already is currently one of the most popular “unofficial” off-leash parks here in Ladner. I must admit I love watch-

ing the dogs run around the track when I’m sitting in traffic waiting for the traffic light to change. Hopefully the dog park could be combined with small, low cost ecofriendly housing and or a dementia village similar to the one located in Langley. The possibilities are endless. The location is

sublime. Why couldn’t we have a contest amongst university architect students to submit their ideas, including potential revenue commercial income? A win, win. Here is an opportunity to show some great leadership by helping dogs and people! L. Hill

Thank you all for your kindness

Editor: I would like to send a special thanks to just a few people who have been so kind to me. Ladner first responders of the fire department each and every time I have found them to be kind, helpful and very professional. Thank you to Grace, a wonderful friend and a great helper, a real angel. Thanks to Dave, a call to him and he is there. Some time back I was looking at walkers in the drugstore, when a gentleman came up to me and asked if I was thinking of buying one. He said he has two at home, no one was using

them. He said wait in your car, he promptly went home picked it up and got it. He then put it in my trunk. Local people in grocery stores and drug stores often help me with my packages to the car. The other day I went to Fat Burger for lunch. To my surprise they said they could only take cash. As I was about to leave a gentleman jumped up and said please let me pay for your meal. It would be my pleasure. A couple of week ago I locked my keys in my car. Because I don’t have a cellphone, I asked a young student walking

by for help. He not only phoned BCAA but waited with me, making him late for school. He left and the man from Doon Express came over to see if he could help. He again called BCAA and waited with me until they came. A huge thank you goes out to each and every one of you who help to make this world a kinder place to live in at this time of turmoil. There really are a lot of kind, considerate people in our village. A special thank you to M.J.R.D. for always being there for me. Also A.B. for all you do, thanks for washing my car. D.A. Davenport

Shared trails and free bicycle bells Editor: As the weather warms, we hear more concerns about safety on shared (walking/cycling/ equestrian) trails. The situation worsens as more people now use the trails, and more people have taken up cycling. This is why our South Delta BC Greens Riding Association has given out hundreds of free bicycle bells at the entrances to the Millennium Trail and the Boundary Bay Trail.

The bells help, but it’s really just an opportunity to remind cyclists that they need to be considerate, slow down when approaching pedestrians, and give them some notice before passing. We have never asked for donations, yet some people strolling by see our signs and walk over to offer us cash to support what we’re doing. A few people stop to talk and some ask why we are doing it. It’s an opportunity for us to explain

that two of our party’s six principles are non-violence and social justice. Other BC Green Party associations in Metro Vancouver have now adopted our idea, and in total, we have given out more than 500 bells. We plan to start up again soon, and anyone interested in participating in the project can contact us at dls@bcgreens.ca. Larry Colero, Chair BC Green Party Riding Association for Delta South

Community Food support, Ukrainian refugees to benefit from shred-a-thon Food security in South Delta, for the growing number of people less able to afford the skyrocketing cost

of food for themselves and their families, and support for Ukrainian refugees, are the causes supported by proceeds from the Rotary Club of Ladner’s Spring ShredA-Thon. The fundraiser takes place on Saturday, April 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 5300 Ladner Trunk Road, behind Eastlink (Delta Cable). Any individual, company or organization can bring their old tax returns, credit card bills, business records, bank statements, and personal information documents to be safely and securely shredded on the spot by a shredding company. “There are no more important causes for all of us right now than giving a hand up to families, already with tight budgets, right here in our own community, who are suffering from the extremely high cost for food,” said Ladner Rotary Club president Denis Denischuk. “In our world, a concern for the now 2.5 million refugees fleeing the

Ukraine to neighbouring countries is foremost in our hearts and minds right now along with the desire to help out somehow. The entire proceeds from this Shred-A-Thon will be directed to these two urgent causes.” For $15 per banker’s box equivalent, those who show up in their vehicles can supervise volunteers who will unload the shredding material from their vehicles and dump it into a shredding bin which will then be loaded by a Shred-Wise company operator into the shredding truck on site. “Thank you to the local companies who are our event sponsors, Ideal Door Ltd., Envision Financial and Millenium Pacific greenhouse, which are making a contribution to these two causes and to the hundreds of people who have shown up in the past with many tons of paper and supported causes in our community,” added Denischuk. -submitted by Ladner Rotary Club

The Ladner Business Association (LBA) has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2022 Quilt Walk and Car Show. LBA president Janice Lawlor-Cooper said the decision to not hold the event this August was due to a number of reasons including the concerns of the financial commitment required by sponsors and service providers as well as the

pandemic uncertainties when it comes to the gathering of hundreds of participants, thousands of visitors plus the LBA’s many volunteers. A note that went out to all LBA members reads as follows: The Quilt Walk and Car Show is enjoyed by Ladner residents and brings thousands of visitors to Ladner. It was a difficult decision to cancel the event, but we look forward to hosting the Quilt Walk and Car Show again in 2023.

Community T-shirt fundraiser helps send medical supplies to family in Ukraine DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

It’s medical supplies – field dressings, bandages and tourniquets – that Dan Matwichyna’s family in the Ukraine have requested to be sent, and through selling blue-andyellow peace sign t-shirts with his sisters, the Tsawwassen resident has been doing exactly that. For $30, you can help support them, too. “The men can’t leave, and so the women on my father’s side, they sent their children away and decided to stay and fight ... The women are acting, basically, as a support for the civil army, and what they wanted is, believe it or not, field dressings, and bandages – stuff like that ... Things that, when people get injured, they can use to save them for

long enough to let them get to real help,” says Matwichyna. With the help of his other family members across Canada and the generosity of those purchasing their T-shirts, they’ve already directly sent three packages of medical supplies to Poland, which then get picked up by couriers to be taken to the Ukraine. “We get emails back from our family, holding the package, saying ‘we got it,’” he says. The T-shirt idea evolved from Matwichyna and his sister’s desire to purchase flags in support of the country, but when they couldn’t find any because they were all sold out, his sister began to make their own flags. Then, they began selling them to fundraise for

sending supplies to their family but have since switched to printing and selling T-shirts. “We’re asking $30 a T-shirt to cover it, and people are donating way more than that, which is neat. On the first day I brought them to the [Rose and Crown] Pub, I think we sold 40 of them in the first hour and a half. So, the community is definitely behind it. I think people want to help, they just don’t know how, and this is one way that they can do that,” says Matwichyna. If you’re interested in purchasing one of Matwichyna’s t-shirts, they are available at the Rose and Crown Pub in Tsawwassen and at Harris Nursery in Ladner. You can also email Dan Matwichyna at dandyrenovations@gmail.com.

RiverHouse celebrates 25th anniversary with appreciation event

S

ince 1997, the RiverHouse Marina, Restaurant & Pub has been known for scrumptious food and breathtaking views. And now coming out of the pandemic, the RiverHouse wants to celebrate its 25th anniversary by thanking all its loyal customers and inviting new customers to enjoy the experience.

The celebration runs from April 1 to April 15. “We will have giveaways such as hats T-shirts, gift cards and many other surprises,” said RiverHouse’s General Manager Zeta Newis One big surprise during the two-week celebration period is the return of three items no longer on the menu: seafood crepe, fried oysters

served in a fish and chips style, and chicken pot pie. “People would call us and if we said that we didn’t have one of those dishes, they would politely say, ‘Thank you, but we are not coming,’ – so it’s great to bring those three dishes back,” said Newis. And now that restaurants and pubs are fully open with no restric-

tions, this means the home of Delta’s largest heated patios are primed and ready. There’s plenty of patio space in both the restaurant and pub sides with close to 150 patio seats out of a total capacity of around 300. “People really love the boat activity and enjoy watching water skiers, paddleboarders, kayaks, canoes, all day long,” said Newis. “You could sit SUBMITTED PHOTO

Whether it be a brunch, luncheon, appetizers, happy hour, dinner or corporate function, RiverHouse has the space (private rooms which seat 8-26 and pub and dining room seating up to 88) with set or custom menus to suit all occasions. It’s not surprising that many customers look upon RiverHouse Marina, Restaurant, and Pub as their home away from home – and those aren’t just over-the-top marketing exaggerations. “You know, we have some people who are here every single day,” said Newis. “They are incredibly loyal custom-

ers. They really do come here for our staff, and our staff loves serving them. Oh, my goodness, it’s wonderful. Minimum five days a week. For years and years.” RiverHouse takes pride in having an experienced and friendly service team, who together, treat the RiverHouse as an extension of their home, where every guest is VIP – a part of their family. And let’s not forget about the dedicated management team who work incredibly hard to make sure every single guest has a great experience from the time they walk thru the door to the time they say, “See you again”. “We just want to thank everybody for the past 25 years and want to see people out and about enjoying themselves again,” said Newis. “It’s going to be a great time.”

DPD looking forward to more ‘community policing’ IAN JACQUES

The Delta Police philosophy of ‘No call too small’ certainly took a bit of a hit during the pandemic, but as restrictions are lifting, the community should expect to see a higher visibility of officers at community events. That’s a promise from Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu who said getting officers out into the community will be a major focus in the coming months. “The impact of the pandemic was significant because it created an isolation, not just from within the public, but also within organizations,” he said. “We did have to, in some ways, wall ourselves off in order to do our jobs. How do we keep our people safe? How do we keep our community safe? We did

have to adjust our service delivery model, which is fully built on having that direct visibility and presence within our community through the various aspects of the model. “We had to limit contact with the public and that was a big issue because it put barriers up between us and the community.” He said there have been some positives from the pandemic including having the ability to work remotely, virtual training, and enhanced interactions with other agencies. “Virtual does have a place, so moving forward, I think we will be in a bit of a hybrid model for some things,” he said. “For me, I want to see us out there and being more visible, so that means more things like bike patrols, interacting with people in the community, more neighbour-

Interactions with residents at community events such as the Pride Picnic, are things Delta Police officers are looking forward to post-pandemic. hood meetings…more boots on the ground…to engage and have more

direct contact with our citizens.” Sidhu said as commu-

nity events come back, citizens can expect to see more DPD officers taking part. “These have always been great ways for our officers to connect with the community and are important for us to be a part of – both from a safety stand-point, but also from a connection to the community,” he said. “Police Day in May is back, which will help us to open the doors and get us back out into the community. Our District Community Police offices are open again and our volunteers are working with our officers again, which is great for us.” Sidhu said throughout the pandemic, the hiring of new officers didn’t stop, but what did stop was some of the training and work within the community. “These officers have never operated within a

full Delta Police service delivery model, because that was restricted, so that is something I’m very excited about. We get the chance to show these young people what it is like to police in Delta,” he said. Overall, Sidhu says he was very proud of how Delta responded to the pandemic. “I’ve been here 28 years and every time Delta has a crisis, the community rises up and supports each other and that was no different in this circumstance,” he said. “We had to pivot on how we provided the service delivery and people understood that, they understood that our officers had to call them on the phone rather than visit in person. I think the community was very supportive, they understood the changes that we had to make.”

Two years into pandemic and little has changed for B.C. paramedics MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

We have been welcomed back to large events. Face masks are now optional in public places and travel restrictions are going to be eased further this week. Yet, two years into the pandemic, little has changed for B.C. paramedics. They continue to attend calls wearing PPE (personal protection equipment) from head-to-toe, depending on the situation they are walking in to. Communicating with a patient or colleague through a respirator is a challenge, never mind trying to carry out duties in the additional gear. Ladner resident Brian Twaites is a 35-year veteran with B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS). As an

advanced life support paramedic he is attending to calls throughout Metro Vancouver including his hometown. “The last two years have been a real drain on health care workers in general, first responders and the paramedics. It’s been very hard physically and mentally,” said Twaites. “We work in an evidence based practice world and it comes down to the science. We adhere by the science and if they’re saying the best practice for us to do at this time is to remain in the protective gear, then that’s what we are going to do. “Communicating with a respirator on is definitely a challenge. If you’re running a cardiac arrest, communication is very important and when people can’t hear you asking for stuff, you

OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO

Answering calls in full PPE gear remains a challenge. have to repeat yourself five times. Then when you get into the hospi-

tal, the hospital staff is trying to understand what you’re saying

through the respirator. You go home with a very sore throat and a hoarse voice at the end of the day. “We don’t see an end light for us just yet due to the science, but we’re all hoping it’s coming soon. I think it’s important that the public realize, especially now that restrictions have eased, that when we pull up to a residence or to a call, and it takes us another minute or so, it’s because we still have to put on all this protective gear.” Twaites’ other role with BCEHS as a paramedic specialist is working out of its communication centre in Vancouver. He serves as a clinic resource for paramedics around the province and the role was particularly invaluable during the early weeks of the pandemic. “Part of our specialty

is we’re trained with high risk hazards and infectious disease, so we are doing a lot of clinical consulting with paramedics prior to even going into a call. When COVID started, we didn’t even know what we were dealing with,” Twaites continued. “At one point, we were actually previewing an emergency call that would come in. The crew would already be dispatched and we would have to review the call to decide about the safety parameters for the crews because of the infectious process we were dealing with. “Even now we’re still in the middle of an opioid crisis. And that’s an example of one of those calls where we should be in full protective gear when we are dealing with an unconscious overdose that we’re trying to resuscitate.”

Community support shines through during pandemic

Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation was able to purchase vital equipment Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation (DHCHF) is proud to announce that through donor support, they have been able to purchase additional equipment related to COVID-19 and infection control at Delta Hospital. In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic emerged, DHCHF launched the Delta Hospital COVID-19 Response Fund to support the urgent and ongoing needs surrounding the pandemic. Due to the generosity of the community towards this Fund, DHCHF was able to purchase infection control equipment, protective equipment and critical infrastructure enhancements. This tremendous support from the community helped to ensure that

Delta’s healthcare team had the support and tools they needed during the pandemic. This Fund continues to be utilized to purchase vital equipment that supports Delta Hospital’s dedicated frontline workers as they resume prepandemic volumes at the highest standard of infection control. Recently, DHCHF was able to purchase additional equipment including a blood bank refrigerator, ECG carts, a bladder scanner, and an infection control tent with HEPA vacuum. “The healthcare team at Delta Hospital has provided exceptional care throughout the pandemic and thanks to the incredible support from our donors, they have had the necessary equipment to provide the safest pos-

sible experience for both staff and patients,” says, Lisa Hoglund, Executive Director, Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “Thank you to the individuals and businesses who donated to our Delta Hospital COVID-19 Response Fund for ensuring the hospital’s needs related to COVID-19 and infection control were met.” It is through the generosity and passion of their supporters that Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation is able to fund and promote outstanding healthcare at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care and in the community. This ensures that Delta Hospital’s healthcare workers can provide the best possible care for the community. -submitted by DHCHF

Responding to the evershifting demands of the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge for the Delta Fire Department, but a challenge they met with great success. And now that restrictions are being lifted, the department is looking forward to resuming enhanced training opportunities and more importantly, increased interactions with the public. Delta is home to seven fire halls with approximately 185 members and 15 non-suppression staff serving the residents of the community. Deputy Chief of Operations Tim Ipsen said the pandemic changed the way the department not only

responded to calls, but how they conducted other duties in the community. “Being in the forefront and dealing directly with COVID presented challenges within itself let alone directly here in our fire halls,” he said. “Early on we took extreme measures to not only protect all of our staff, but the public as we responded to calls, so that necessitated changes in our PPE and also in our emergency response.” He said the department, through the city and their union, created a task force where they met regularly. “We worked very well together and found ways to overcome any challenges that came up,” he said. Delta firefighters are thrilled to be back out in the community again, including visits to local elementary schools. Finding ways to work more collaborative with other agencies, that will be a legacy of the pandemic and a good legacy.” Ipsen said training and interactions out in the community were very limited dur-

ing the pandemic with a lot of training done via Zoom or in smaller groups. And meeting with the public was next to impossible. Now that is changing as restrictions are being lifted. “The fire department has a history of good community involvement and that basically took a back seat the past

two years,” he said. “Moving forward, we will be able to have inter-hall training, offsite training, and inter-agency training as well, more public involvement whether it is festivals or parades, an increase in our fire inspections as well. “Overall, to get our crews outside of the four walls, it’s going to be very uplifting for

THANK YOU! For over two years, health care professionals, first responders, caregivers, and frontline workers have bravely navigated and served our community through the COVID-19 pandemic and we could not be more grateful. We recognize the incredible sacrifices these workers have made, and continue to make, to assist those in need, deliver key services, and keep us safe. The constant level of professionalism, kindness, and care provided is inspiring and our appreciation is endless! Former North Van paramedic says more help needed for first responders with PTSD

Jeff Smith rushed to help many in crisis then he was the one who needed the help

JANE SEYD

N o r t h S h o re N e w s

Jeff Smith understands first-hand the strains that exhausted health care workers and first responders are under. Starting in 2000, Smith worked for almost 20 years as an ambulance paramedic all over the Lower Mainland. Working as a paramedic was a natural fit for Smith. “I come from a family of first responders,” he said. “My brother is a firefighter. My mom was a nurse.” He enjoyed solving medical problems and admits he was “a bit of an adrenaline junkie.” Smith’s passion for the

profession also led him to work as an instructor at the Justice Institute and field trainer for new paramedics. But under the surface, things weren’t going well. In the last few years of his career, Smith worked on the Downtown Eastside, at a time when B.C. was already in the grip of its first health pandemic – the drug overdose crisis. His hardest call had come earlier, however, in 2009, when he attended a horrific traffic accident involving a two-yearold child who died after being struck by a tow truck.

“People are being put under enormous strain and exposure to stress and trauma.” CONTINUED from Page 18

At the time “my kids were the same age,” said Smith. He began having nightmares and flashbacks, unable to get the searing visions of what he’d seen out of his head. “I struggled,” he said. “I ended up getting lost in alcohol. It kind of consumed my days off.” With help, Smith got sober, but his problems didn’t end there. His nightmares continued, and he found himself not sleeping for days at a time, afraid of what he’d see if he closed his eyes. Conventional psychological techniques – many of which involved reliving traumatic incidents in order to desensitize him – didn’t help much, said Smith. In February of 2021, he hit rock bottom when he parked his car near Lions Gate Bridge and decided to take his own life.

The irony wasn’t lost on him. As a paramedic, being called to help with people who were suicidal was something Smith had done countless times. “I’d been on the bridge with people who were in those moments, and I don’t think I ever really understood – until I was there,” he said. This time, he was the person needing help. Fortunately, he said, that evening help came in the form of another first responder, a Vancouver Police Department officer, who took him to St. Paul’s Hospital. After he was released from hospital, Smith said he realized something needed to change. Through his sister, he made a connection with a therapist, Steve King, who had developed a technique for helping with post-traumatic stress. Unlike some of the other techniques he’d tried, this time he didn’t have to talk about the incidents

that haunted him or go to an office. He’d finally found something that could help him, he said. It was a turning point, said Smith. Since then, he’s joined forces with King and other first responders in a non-profit group to advocate for help for those suffering from PTSD. The group has created a website which also aims to give people practical techniques they can practice at home. “There are some significant delays in accessing health out there. And people are apprehensive,” said Smith. “This is something that can be done on your own, anyplace, anytime. I think it’s important that we give these first responders a skill set they can use in their daily lives.” Smith said one of the first issues he had to deal with as a paramedic was a stigma in admitting that he needed help. “It still exists today,” he said. “If you put your hand up and

say ‘That really affected me,’ do people start questioning whether you’re able to do the job?” As a first responder, “you’re trained to put those emotions aside to do the jobs you need to, and the problem with that is, when do you address those emotions?” he said. Today’s COVID-19 pandemic combined with the overdose crisis and events like the summer’s heat dome have pushed many of those on the front lines past their ability to cope, he said. “I know guys are burnt out. They’re at their limits. These people are tired. They are exhausted.” Bob Parkinson, health and wellness director for the Ambulance Paramedics of British Columbia union, agrees. “People are being put under enormous strain and exposure to stress and trauma,” he said. Chronic low staffing levels have taken a toll on those remaining – a situation that became

shockingly apparent during the heat dome this summer, when ambulances could not keep up with the volume of calls in the Lower Mainland. “Sooner or later you just can’t keep doing that.” Occupational stress injuries currently make up the largest type of on-the-job injuries for paramedics, said Parkinson, adding paramedics make up one of the occupations with the fastest-rising injury rates with Workers Compensation. Parkinson said while the situation is slowly improving, there’s still not enough help, particularly in terms of benefits paramedics can access for psychological help, before situations reach a crisis. Those kinds of supports are essential if the BC Ambulance Service hopes to retain paramedics, said Parkinson. “We’re getting better,” he said. “But it’s still nowhere near where we need to be.”

THANK YOU! Frontline Workers & First Responders We appreciate all of your care, support, and enduring energy over the past two years.

How to create structure after retirement

Professionals typically look forward to retirement and the freedom that comes with it. The notion that commuting and deadlines will one day be a distant memory is enough to make anyone excited for retirement. But when the day to leave the daily grind behind arrives, many retirees admit to feeling a little anxiety about how they’re going to find structure. Without a job to do each day, people can begin to feel useless. Overcoming such feelings can be difficult, but finding ways to build daily structure can make the transition to retirement go smoothly. Find something to truly engage in Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by

retirement, but before retirees dive right into volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging. Embrace the idea of “bridge employment Bridge employment is the name given to the trend that has seen retired individuals take on part-time or temporary employment after they have retired from full-time working. COVID-19 has no doubt skewed post-retirement working statistics since the World Health Organization first declared a pandemic in March 2020, but a 2019 survey from the LIMRA Secure Retirement Institute found that 27 percent of preretirees with at least $100,000 in assets planned to work parttime in retirement. Even parttime work can provide enough daily structure to help retirees

Finding ways to build daily structure can make the transition to retirement go smoothly. feel as though each day is not just a free-for-all. Make a concerted effort to be more social Volunteering and working

are not the only ways to create structure in retirement. A concerted effort to be more social can help retirees fill their days with interactions

with like-minded individuals who may be experiencing the same feelings. Join a book club, a local nature group that goes on daily or semi-daily morning hikes or another local community organization. These are great ways to build structure and meet new people. Retirees can create social media accounts to find local community groups that cater to their interests. Even if it seems hard to believe, plenty of retirees are seeking to create structure in retirement life, and social media can make it easier to find such individuals in your community. Structure and retirement may seem like strange bedfellows. But many retirees seek structure after calling it a career, and there are many fun ways for seniors to create more organization in their lives. -Metro Creative

How often should seniors be visting their doctor?

Routine health checkups are a key part of staying healthy. Older adults may feel like they’re always visiting one doctor or another. But what is an acceptable frequency for doctor appointments? The answer isn’t always so cut and dry, and many health professionals have mixed feelings even among themselves over the magic number. Visiting the doctor more frequently does not necessarily add up to better health, and it actually can do the opposite. Doctor visit frequency is not a one-size-fits-all answer. A yearly physical or checkup is a given,

even for people who are healthy. People with a family history of certain conditions, like sleep disorders, cancer, high blood pressure, and other conditions, may need to see a doctor more frequently than those with no such histories. In addition, patients may need referrals to certain specialists who work together to provide an overall health plan. That can increase the number of appointments and shorten the intervals between them. *People visit the doctor four times a year on average. *Studies show that poor or uninsured people prolong the time between

doctor’s visits. *Individuals with high blood pressure may need to see the doctor four times a year to ensure medications are working properly. *Patients on dialysis see the doctor several times a week. Balance is necessary in regard to health care. Patients can work together with their doctors to develop screening schedules that are customized to their particular profiles. These schedules can be modified as health history information changes or as patients’ age. Doctors can dial back or increase health visits as needed. -Metro Creative

Re-shifting priorities

You do not need me to tell you that we live in a world and culture that seems to demand more from us. More of our time, more commitment and increased responsibility to somehow, in some way produce more. Taking time for rest, for Sabbath is a good idea and that it is rooted in Scripture. Yet, practicing Sabbath can be challenging. There are so many competing priorities for our time and energy that the idea of rest, seems illusive and a pipe dream at times. But we need rest, and we need Sabbath. After all, it is one of the Ten Commandments. The challenge as I see it is if we make rest a priority, we run the risk of being seen as ‘lazy’ or that our work or project will somehow fall apart without our attention and devotion. Despite the challenge to find the right balance between rest and

work, there is hope. I find it interesting and affirming that there are some business models and church contexts that promote, or at least attempt to promote, a healthy balance between family life and work life. demand our time and commitment. As a newly ordained Curate in a large church, a colleague of mine was meeting the Leadership Team for the first time. He was told that his day off was every Friday. As the conversation progressed his start date was going to be the first of the following month, a Friday. To which he responded, “Sounds good, that means I will see you Sunday?” The Rector retorted, “No, I will see you Friday.” Changing our norm and culture around rest and Sabbath is a challenge as this example illustrates, but it is worth the effort. We are a work in progress. For that we should give thanks for as long as we are progressing, we always have opportunity to choose and re-choose to align ourselves with the God who commands us to rest.

AgoldenspringbreakinCampbellRiver South Delta Minor Hockey has its first provincial title since 2007 thanks to overtime thriller MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The South Delta Minor Hockey Association (SDMHA) will have to make room at the Ladner Leisure Centre for its first provincial championship banner in 15 years thanks to a thrilling victory in Campbell River. The A1 Storm is B.C. Hockey’s U18 tier two provincial champions after edging Hollyburn 3-2 in double overtime on March 24. Blueliner Dylan Van Poelgeest ended nearly 90 minutes of drama when he jumped on a turnover to score his first goal of the tournament in the late stages of the second sudden-death session. It was the Storm’s first win this season against their league rival in four tries, including a 5-1 loss three weeks earlier in the Pacific Coast Amateur final four playoffs. It’s the first provincial championship for an SDMHA team since back-to-back (U21) Juvenile titles in 2005-06 and 2006-07. “I don’t even know what the right word is. The excitement. The chaos. The parents were going nuts and the guys were going nuts,” said Storm head coach Ken Priestlay of

the euphoria that followed the overtime goal. “We didn’t even know if we would be getting the (championship) banner right away until they brought it out (for the medal ceremony) and then you realize even more what the boys have accomplished and that’s coming back to South Delta. “They played the game of their lives for sure and we couldn’t be more proud of them.” The Storm finished the eightteam championship with a perfect 5-0 record after going 3-0 in round-robin play with wins over Peninsula (6-4), Trail (4-0) and Fort St. John (8-1). That set-up a challenging medal round on the tournament’s final day. South Delta produced a 5-3 semi-final win over Kelowna on the Wednesday morning then watched Hollyburn hold off Trail 3-2 a couple of hours later. Jacob Bailie-Wolf’s second of the night gave the Storm a 2-0 lead midway through the second period of the gold medal game and Hollyburn answered with a pair of power play goals, including the equalizer 58 seconds into the third. “For all of us, it was like we can beat those guys. We just had to bring our best and that was the focus going further and

further into the tournament,” Priestlay added. Storm captain Max KiddsBrodie had a productive four days with eight goals and 13 points. He factored in on all five goals in the semi-final, including scoring the game winner on the power play with 3:31 remaining as South Delta rallied back from a 3-2 deficit after 40 minutes.

Linemate Bailie-Wolf finished with seven goals. Scoring depth was a big part of the team’s success with nine players producing goals and 15 at least one assist. Goaltender Diarmuid Bostock showed plenty of composure in the pressure-packed playoff wins. Arjun Chahal recorded the shutout in the key round-robin victory over Trail.

The roster also features Declan Speiran, Ben Wichers, Jake Jones, Owen Turpie, Jack Callow, Mathias McDonnell, Hayden Clisby, Tyler Allan, Maddex Hewitt, Dylan Van Poelgeest, Ryan Carleton, Owen Venier, Kai Sloan and Zachary Milne. Priestlay was joined on the bench by assistants Tony Marra and Brent Wheatley.

U15s were seconds away from playing for provincial gold The U15 A1 South Delta Storm capped an outstanding season by coming ever-so-close to reaching the podium at B.C. Hockey’s tier two provincial championships in Vernon. Third period goals from Connely Parker, Damian Dumas and Dominic Dumas, just 1:43 apart, gave the Storm a 6-5 lead over the Kelowna Rockets in their semi-final game on March 24. However, the Okanagan champions

equalized with 1:25 remaining and went on to score at the 6:24 mark of overtime for a 7-6 win. The Storm had little time to recover from the heartbreaking defeat, falling 6-3 to Pacific Coast Amateur rival Port Coquitlam in the bronze medal game hours later. Kelowna went on to win the championship, defeating Victoria 3-2. South Delta had secured a semi-final berth in the eight-team tournament by

concluding round-robin play Tuesday with a clutch 6-1 win over Cranbrook. The Storm took control in the opening period thanks to power play goals from Thomas Cowan and Kaden Meyer just 53 seconds apart. Blair Pashak made it 3-0 before the intermission. Cowan and Pashak would later score again while Dominic rounded out the South Delta scoring. After opening the championships

with a 4-1 loss to eventual group winner Victoria, the Storm bounced back with a big 9-0 victory against host Greater Vernon. The roster also includes: Sean Jones, Jacob Jope, Ryan Rackow, Mason Buors, Mitch McCluskey, Joseph Prokop, Barunka Sibertova, Sawyer Shears, Thomas Denney, Koen Hubbard, Max Kobus, and James Scouras.

Brian and Harry helped us purchase our first home, a townhouse in Port Moody. Their experience, patience and of course, sense of humour were so reassuring through the whole process. We felt they had our best interests at heart and we loved working with both of them. Thanks! Vince and Kate.

232 Howes Street

Extra storage space in crawl. Bonus- legal 2 bedroom suite rented @ $2000.00 per month. 2 car detached garage off back lane access.

Brian and Harry assisted us with a sale and purchase, the latter took some time as we had a definite image of the property we required! Brian encouraged us in our search, eventually we found the light, bright , spacious condo we had been seeking. Brian and Harry are both very knowledgeable of the supporting companies one needs to use, cleaning crew, home inspectors etc. Made our move easier to have a couple of names given to us for us to make a choice rather than having to peruse yellow pages or internet advertisements. I see Brian and Harry are becoming “Seniors Specialists”! They are well suited for this role, with their promptness, knowledge of their community, and a wonderfully laid back attitude. We are certainly enjoying living in the condo we found together. Thanks guys! Sue and Don. Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford were our Realtors for our first home purchase last year. We felt as though they continually went above and beyond in advocating for us in an incredibly competitive market. They were both enthusiastic and empathetic, recognizing that this was a sometimes overwhelming process. We really appreciated their patience in educating us in the real estate process, both from a buying, selling and investment standpoint. We are so happy with our new home, and feel confident that it is a great place for us now and will remain a great investment in the future. We were so grateful to them for being so honest and pro-active about our options throughout our search. Their referral network also took huge pressure off of us, as I did not have to research into Mortgage Brokers or inspectors, saving us time and stress when it really counted Brian and Harry have taken care of us every step of the way. Thank you Brian and Harry!! Cassidy.

CUNNINGHAM (Schechtl), Marie Hilda October 5, 1931 - March 19, 2022 Marie passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 90 with family by her side. Marie was predeceased by her husband Paul and is lovingly remembered by her son Grant (Cindy), daughter Janice, grandson Jordy (Kate) and granddaughter Jacey (Branden). Marie was born in Vancouver and grew up in the Marpole area. Paul and Marie moved to Richmond in 1956 and built the family home on Granville Avenue. Marie then moved to Ladner in 2008. Marie was truly a remarkable lady. She started her career in banking in Steveston and went on to play pivotal roles in business with Cunningham Trucking and MacAulay Cunningham. Marie worked as a Returning Officer with Elections BC and served as a judge on the Assessment Appeal Board with the BC Assessment Authority. Marie was an incredible cook, and hosted many dinners and her morning coffee, books and had an inquisitive mind and was on world events and politics.

Our mum, Betty Hathaway, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2021. Betty was born in Kent, England. She was one of six siblings. She was married in June 1944 to our father, Ted, who was in the Armed Forces, and as a couple, travelled and lived abroad during his service. These countries included Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany and of course, England. Later, in 1988, they immigrated to BC, Canada, and settled in Ladner. For years, she and Ila ran a flower shop in Ladner Center. Dad passed away in 1992, and Betty kept active with her hobbies − sewing, tole− painting, bridge clubs and lawn bowling, as well as volunteer work at McKee House. She spent her last years in assisted living and LTC, both in Ladner and Surrey. She is survived by her three children, Norrie (Shirley), Yvonne (Alan) and Marion (James), as well as six grandchildren and numerous great− grandchildren. Betty lived a full life and will be missed by all who knew her.

loved to entertain parties. She loved crosswords. Marie always up to date

A Celebration of Life will take place at Quilchena Golf and Country Club - 3551 Granville Avenue, Richmond - on Sunday April 24th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to BC Children’s Hospital.

HIEMSTRA-PERSONIUS, Gay (Geertje) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Gay (Geertje) HiemstraPersonius on March 23, 2022 at the age of 85. Mom passed away peacefully at Kin Village, where the wonderful staff had been taking care of her since 2018. Mom was predeceased by dad, John (Jan) Hiemstra, in 2001. She is survived by her children Doug, Harry (Meghan), and Hilary (Rick); grandchildren Calvin, Randy, Bryce, Bailey, Taylor, Cameron, and Danielle. Mom also leaves behind many family and friends in the Netherlands. Mom was born in Pingjum, Netherlands in 1936 and came to Canada in 1960 after she met and married dad who had been visiting from Canada on a holiday. Mom and dad settled in Richmond, BC, where they raised their family. Mom was able to be at home and always made sure there was a hot lunch or a treat after school. She worked at Wardair in the 80s, where she made a lot of friends and enjoyed the perks of many trips to the Netherlands and sunny destinations. After Richmond and a few years living in Abbotsford, mom moved to Tsawwassen when dad passed away. Mom loved living in Sunny Tsawwassen where she volunteered at the thrift store, enjoyed walking on the dyke, and quilting at the Kin Village Community Centre. No service will be held, we ask instead that you remember mom on your next walk, on her birthday on July 1st, when you stay warm with one of her quilts, or at Christmas when you put up one of the Christmas stockings she made.

Truly a life well lived!

HALSTON, Ronald Herbert June 22, 1930 - April 22, 2021 In Loving Memory of Ron Halston, a funeral service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 2:00pm at St David’s Anglican Church, 1115 51A St. Tsawwassen Reception to follow.

With broken hearts, we share that our beloved husband, father, and friend, Eugene Krawchuk, passed away on March 21, 2022. Eugene was born in Edmonton to Leon "Leo" and Adele Krawchuk. The family relocated to Tsawwassen, where he grew up with his three siblings, Wayne, Karen, and Kevin. He graduated from UBC with a first−class degree in Physics and went on to earn his CGA and an MBA from Sauder Business School. It was at UBC that he met and fell in love with his wife, Margaret. With infinite love and support, they raised their two daughters, Shannon and Erin. After working for Royal Bank, most of Eugene’s career was at Chevron Canada. He held roles in almost every department of the company to fully understand the business and became the head of finance for Chevron Canada. Outside of work, Eugene loved nothing more than to play a round of golf with friends, travel the world with his family, or listen to his favourite music. He was an amazing chef, always trying new recipes and sharing his delicious food and love of cooking with the rest of his family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be sent to the Canadian Red Cross and their efforts for the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis, in lieu of flowers.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

LUNDY, Ila August 27, 1914 to February 25, 2022 Ila Lundy passed away peacefully at her home at Haven House in Ladner surrounded by much love and care. She is dearly beloved by her many friends and family and will be remembered for her passion, dedication to family, infinite love and encouragement, and her cheerful outlook on life.

Ila’s home was warm and inviting and full of happy memories of raising a family, hosting afternoon bridge games, playing the piano, or entertaining family with a home cooked meal. She enjoyed travelling and her summer vacations in Penticton were a highlight. Music played an integral role in Ila’s life. She managed a band that would play for many dances through the years. Learning music at a young age, she could play any tune on the piano by ear. She participated in every family event and was always next to us cheering. Whether you called her Friend, Mum, Mum-in-law, Aunt, Nanna, or Great-Nanna, you could always count on her support. We celebrate her amazing 107 years of life, and will miss her dearly. The family would like to thank Augustine, Haven House and the many people who helped support and care for Ila. In lieu of flowers, please look for extra time to spend with loved ones. “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” 1John 4:16

We are incredibly saddened to announce the sudden passing of our son, brother and uncle, Hans van Halderen, at the young age of 55 at his home in Chilliwack, BC, on March 14, 2022. Hans was born in Delft, the Netherlands, on May 29, 1966, and immigrated with his family to Delta, BC, in 1970. He attended Holly Elementary when it first opened, followed by Delta Manor and Delta Secondary. Hans was a friend to many and always had time for everyone around him. His passion earlier in life was soccer, followed by fishing at Tunkwa Lake Resort (his happy place). It was always a game for Hans to get the first catch over his dad and nephews. We are so going to miss him, along with his co−workers at Tidy Steel−Fab, where he worked for many, many years. Hans is predeceased by his dad, Bert. He is survived by his mom Janneke, sister Carolien, nephews Shane and Sam, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, both in Canada and the Netherlands. Memorial to be held at a later date.
