New rules catch families by surprise after weekend trips to Point Roberts

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Pre-entry tests no longer required for fully vaccinated travellers coming into Canada wasn’t the only thing that changed as of April 1. That’s what some Optimist readers alarmingly found out over the weekend after making trips down to Point Roberts with their young children. Tsawwassen resident Pascal Bajgar arrived at the Boundary Bay crossing with his two kids, ages seven and 10, who both have a single dose of a COVID vaccine. He entered all that information into the ArriveCan app as required. However, Bajgar had no idea the rules had changed. Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children five years of age or older must now provide a valid pre-entry test result, even if they are accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult.

OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO

Some of the new rules to travel across the border into Point Roberts caught a few Optimist readers by surprise this past weekend. “A warning to Point Roberts crossers with kids over five. Make sure that they have their double doses as the new rules state,” Bajgar wrote to the Optimist. “Our two kids only had one jab. The vigilant Canadian border agents released

us with a warning but warned we could have been stuck in Point Roberts for a few days until the testing centre (opens again) on Wednesday. “The new rule came into effect on (April 1), that’s why we were con-

fused because we had travelled to the Point at least five times previously with the kids with no issues.” Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce president Brian Calder said he had heard from two more families that

were given the same warning after not being aware of the new rules. One included a Canadian property owner at Crystal Beach whose son has a congenital heart defect and was not vaccinated in fear it may trigger myocarditis.

They had been travelling to Point Roberts prior to April 1 with no issues. “One would think the Canadian border agencies would advise their public of these changes well in advance,” said Calder. To qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller, children over the age of five must have received at least 14 calendar days prior to the day of travel at least two doses of a vaccine accepted by the Government of Canada for the purpose of travel, or a mix of two accepted vaccines, or at least one dose of the Janssen/ Johnson & Johnson vaccine. In addition, unvaccinated and partially vaccinated youth 12-to17 years of age must complete the 14-day quarantine, and all testing requirements for preentry, arrival and Day-8 tests, even when they are accompanied by travellers who qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller.

New water restrictions coming for Delta, region Stage 1 of the revised water restriction includes reducing lawn, tree and shrub watering durations SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

City council recently approved a recommendation by the engineering department to amend Delta’s water service bylaw to reflect changes in Metro Vancouver’s Drinking Water Conservation Plan, making it tougher to water your lawn. The regional district seven years ago updated its Water Shortage Response Plan to a new policy that manages the use of drinking water during periods of high demand and water shortages. Member municipalities are responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance by incorporating the restrictions into municipal bylaws. The region experienced a prolonged heatwave last summer, which resulted in sustained higher demand for water. Metro Vancouver addressed the problem by updating the plan to include more restrictive Stages 1 and 2 to deter the need to advance to Stages 3 or 4. While water demand would typically have reverted to normal usage

OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO

Residents should take note of the new watering restrictions coming for all Metro Vancouver communities. after the heatwave, the region instead continued its high use trend until the end of August. A report to council also notes significant water use was managed by higher-than-average snowpack levels in 2021 that made it possible to narrowly avoid going to Stage 2 last year. Although various educational campaigns are used throughout the summer to encourage

reduced water consumption, the sustained high water use created an urgency to address the issue of over-consumption, the report notes, adding the regional district worked with consultants and member municipalities to update to the plan for implementation in spring 2022. The updated plan is anticipated to reduce summer water demands

by implementing a more restrictive Stage 1 and eliminating lawn watering in Stage 2 for residential and non-residential properties. Soil and sand-based playing fields do not have the same restrictions as lawns and the watering of playing fields remains permitted in Stage 2. Changes to Stage 1 restrictions, which will be activated annu-

ally staring this May 1, include reducing lawn watering days from two mornings to one morning per week for residential and non-residential properties, as well as durations for sprinkler and manual watering. Changes to Stage 2 include reducing lawn watering from one morning per week to being prohibited for residential and non-residential properties. Golf courses are still permitted an exemption to watering restrictions in Stage 2 and 3 when operating under a city approved water management plan. During council’s March 28 discussion on the revised plan, engineering director Steven Lan noted the city will look to increase the frequency of street tree watering in Delta. Asked if Delta will be prepared in case another heat dome hits the region, city manager Sean McGill noted a review of equipment and resources is underway and a plan will be in place, including for shelters and letting residents know in advance where they can go. A report will be coming to council.

TFN celebrates Treaty Day Tsawwassen First Nation celebrated the 13th anniversary of the Effective Date of the Treaty Final Agreement on Sunday, (April 3). Treaty Day began with speaker and executive council Member Chemkwaat (Valerie Cross) addressing the community and welcoming respected Elder Qw’estanya (Ruth Adams) to say an opening prayer. Jesseca and Connie Adams followed the prayer with a beautiful drum and song. Coun. Cross thanked the Tsawwassen People before us who passed on their songs and teachings, who came forward when they were called to do these events. They taught us how to respect the drum and join our hearts as one and beat together. Cross also thanked the community for taking time out from their Sunday to dress warmly and gather. “We’re so excited to gather together - we don’t care what the weather’s like,” said Cross. Celebrating new and old traditions, the community was able to share

No timeline for federal decision on RBT2 IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

It’s going to be a little while longer until we know the fate of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 (RBT2) project from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA). The Impact Assessment Agency concluded the public consultation period on March 15 and is now considering the input gathered through the consultation to determine whether there is sufficient information at that point to make a decision. The project has been intensely debated on several fronts. In February, the City of Delta requested that the federal government postpone or altogether deny the approval of the RBT2 project because of the adverse effects it would bring to the surrounding community and environment. Other opponents, including the City of Richmond and several environmental groups, also deride the project as catastrophic to the delicate Fraser Estuary ecosystem, which is

VANCOUVER FRASER PORT AUTHORITY PHOTO

There is no timeline yet on when there will be a federal decision regarding the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project. crucial for supporting migrating birds and local sea life. Among the most vocal opponent has been GCT Terminals – which operates Roberts Bank’s existing Deltaport container terminal. GCT is planning its own smaller expansion of Deltaport

(Berth 4), and it has legally challenged the VFPA on the latter’s alleged support for Terminal 2 and deferral of Berth 4 – which GCT alleges is a conflict of interest on the part of the port authority. The VFPA, in turn, said Terminal 2 would be operated

by another company other than GCT, which would provide fair, competitive market conditions for vessels looking to dock at Roberts Bank. South Delta resident Roger Emsley, executive director of the Against Port Expansion community group, says

enough is enough. “After 13 years of submissions, reviews and public hearings it is time now for the federal government – Cabinet (Governor in Council) - to make a decision using the science, evidence and facts and deny approval,” said Emsley. “On the last day of public comment VFPA wrote a letter to the Canadian Impact Assessment Agency stating the port authority will respond to the draft conditions and the comments received in the public comment period. Where in the legislation is there an opportunity for the project proponent to make further submissions? When is this going to end? Why does VFPA believe it is entitled to the last word?” Emsley says the science, facts and evidence are overwhelming. “The minister and cabinet have all the information necessary to make a decision now and deny approval for RBT2,” he said. “The minister must do the right thing and say no more submissions.” CONTINUED: see Page 7

VFPA will respond to public comments CONTINUED from P 6

VFPA President and Chief Executive Officer Robin Silvester confirmed with the Optimist that they intend to respond to the public submissions. “Absolutely. That’s the normal process. The Canadian Impact Assessment process is set up to give everybody who has perspective on the project the opportunity to contribute to the process, to make sure their comments go on the record. It’s good that people have done that, and we have a significant body of comments being made,” he said. “We’re going to be going through all the comments that have been made and provide a sort of response to those comments. We’re listening to what’s being said in the process and

we’re responding to the points being made.” Silvester said he is unsure when that submission from the VFPA will be made. “As the port authority, our role is to enable Canada’s trade, and to do so, protecting the environment and considering

the communities that the port is part of. And as we look at that role, really, it comes to ... we see a critical need for capacity in Canada in the next five years or so,” he added. “And we see that the only way to meet that need is by delivering the project at Roberts Bank with Terminal 2. So, we see it as a really important project. “We take all of the input through the public hearing process very seriously ... We have a long history of working successfully with stakeholders, with communities to deliver projects in a way that provides benefit to the community and doesn’t actually negatively impact the environment.” -with files from Dani Penaloza and Chuck Chiang/Business in Vancouver

t was a decision I know they struggled to make. Last week, the Ladner Business Association (LBA) announced that this year’s popular Quilt Walk and Car Show was cancelled once again. Citing uncertainty around COVID, which is still with us and will be with us for a while longer, as well as lack of volunteers and sponsorship support, the LBA has focused their planning to bring the event back in 2023. Reaction to the news was met with disappointment by many on social media, specifically on the Optimist Facebook page. Some of the comments were quite rude and disrespectful. I, just like many of you, want to see events return to our community, and while many are in the coming months, some will not be back. Throwing the LBA membership under the bus, saying that they should stop listening to MSN and that Delta is a ‘no fun city’ is way out of line. The LBA had approximately 36 sponsors supporting the 2019 Quilt Walk and Car Show. That’s 36 businesses who put out a financial commitment to ensure the event took place. Add to that significant resources – all volunteer resources – it is the largest financial undertaking in terms of events that the LBA puts on. The LBA is made up of businesses in our community and its members are all volunteers, when they can volunteer, to plan and host events for all of us to enjoy. These events are free to the public. We all should be thankful that there are people in our community, like members of the LBA, who give back so much to make these events happen. It’s disappointing that this event has been cancelled, but let’s lift up and help the LBA and all its volunteers to ensure that the 2023 event is a huge success, instead of tearing them down.

When did Thrift store shopping become political?

T

hrifting has been growing in popularity and value. For those who specialize in second hand goods business has never been so profitable. In an era of disposable fashion and cheap household products, we are encouraged to give away our stuff. To quote Japanese declutter queen, Marie Kondo, “If it doesn’t spark joy say thank you and goodbye.” Thrift stores bring in big money to fund charity organizations. Delta charity shops have a proud history of contributing to the health and welfare of our community. The shining star is the Delta Hospital Auxiliary shop in Ladner. A donation of your stuff, or a purchase of someone else’s stuff, goes directly to Delta Hospital. It’s as simple as that. Another treasure has been the Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe in Tsawwassen. It has a long and cherished past of supporting hospice ser-

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

vices. That’s why it’s so hard to accept that these funds raised might no longer be staying in our community. Donating to hospice has become complicated and fragmented. It all started when the Delta Hospice Society refused to provide MAiD. That stance put Fraser Health Authority in charge of the Irene Thomas Hospice, so now our tax dollars fund it. Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Delta Hospital,

Mountain View Manor and now Irene Thomas Hospice. They fund equipment and capital projects like the awesome Toigo Diagnostic services building at Delta Hospital. Heron Hospice Society provides counselling, grief support and education about end of life to families in our community. It too depends on donations and charity events. Ironically Delta Hospice Society is no longer involved in our local hospice, but they own, operate and reap the benefits of the Cottage Charity Shoppe, (estimated to be worth almost $4 million). None of their revenue goes towards Irene Thomas Hospice. So now that we are informed, it’s up for us all to decide where we want our thrift store dollars to go. Too bad thrifting had to get so political. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writer who wishes she had opened a declutter business, because she gets a little high when she donates to charity shops.

Hype and hoopla about nothing Editor: The hype and hoopla with the re-announcement of a new tunnel, replacing the perfectly good Massey Tunnel, shows a complete failure in regional transportation planning and a complete omission of any thought to Global Warming. The Massey Tunnel replacement was a BC Liberal initiative, to build a bridge to replace the current tunnel, thus allowing Cape Max. tankers and colliers to Surrey Docks to load dirty Montana coal and Braken oil, transported by the BN&SF Railway, saving wheelage charges paid, for using BC Rail’s Delta Super Port line. The fake news and the alternative facts concerning the bridge or tunnel constantly spewed by the

BC Liberals, the NDP and local mayors is breathtaking. What will a $4 billion tunnel do? Create more congestion and more gridlock. Any time savings made will soon be lost as more traffic will use Highway 99 and with Richmond roads now gridlocked in peak hours and no new crossing servicing North of the Fraser, will turn this major highway into a $4 billion parking lot. Studies show that increasing a highway’s capacity in urban areas, generates more traffic, leading to continued congestion and gridlock. Contrary to the “pork pies” being sold by MLA’s and mayors, no rapid transit will ever use the new bridge or tunnel. The Canada Line will

not be expanded and Bus Rapid Transit or BRT is nothing more than a political gimmick, to build more highways. Global warming; the heat dome; and last November’s destructive monsoon, sent a blunt message to our politicians that we must change and sadly the message has fallen on deaf ears. Our elected officials, still believing that higher taxes will cure global warming, continue with good old BC “black top politicas” and Translink is still planning for obsolete, 1980 transit solutions for 2022. This witch’s brew of rubber on asphalt planning will lead the region to a financial & transportation fiasco within the next decade. Malcolm Johnston

Editor: Re: Hype and Hoopla about Nothing – letter from Malcolm Johnston (online, March 24). Mr. Johnston appears to be making the point that the replacement of the Massey Tunnel with more lanes of traffic will simply cause even more gridlock elsewhere along the #99. I can’t be sure, but that seems to be the purpose of his letter. I have always thought that any expansion project is meant to cater for suppressed demand, or forecast demand if the planners get it right. When a new wing is built on a hospital, it usually fills up very quickly. Is this because more people are getting sick? Probably

not. More likely, some of the population has not been able to receive the hospitalization they deserve quickly enough until the extension is commissioned. Does the fact that the extension fills up so quickly mean that it shouldn’t have been built? Not at all. The same with any arterial road expansion. The planners know there is suppressed demand and future demand waiting for the expansion. The fact that it attracts a whole lot of additional traffic is proof of this, and, I must say, justifies the expansion project very quickly. I’m sure the new Massey Tunnel will be a case in point. The reality that opening the new tunnel in

2025 (I think) will cause gridlock somewhere else on the #99 raises another issue. No expansion project can keep lockstep pace with increasing demand. Projects by their nature are “lumpy” and not perfectly incremental, so the planners have to go with the expansion project that will bring the most public convenience per dollar, and then keep planning the next expansion accordingly. If Mr. Johnston knows of a way to expand arterial roads incrementally according to incremental demand, he should let the Roads Department know right away instead of writing letters about “black top politicas” and fake “fake news”. RIDE INTO SPRING WITH STYLE AND EASE!

I have volunteered for different organizations, food banks and community outreach and I personally have heard people suffering depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and came to the conclusion that a large portion of the population is having moderate to severe mental health issues, however, a lot of it is hidden as people don’t wish to talk about mental health openly. I had severe anxiety and depression due to the pandemic as well as

how uncertain the future is. A constructive solution I have discussed with family, and coworkers is spending time outdoors. Local parks and spending time in a park walking in the forest is therapeutic and calms down anxious feelings and thoughts. I personally feel companies and schools should have activities outdoors at local parks to improve peoples’ mental wellbeing as well as discussing mental health more openly. Brian Jones

Course loads can be daunting for university and college students right out of high school but so can the transition to an immense learning environment. That’s where Southpointe Academy’s latest addition will greatly benefit its senior classes. Last week, the Tsawwassen indepenent school officially opened its Senior School Campus. It’s located directly across 56th Street from the main campus and just steps away from the growing academy’s original home it departed a decade ago. The near 13,000 square feet of additional space features two levels with eight class rooms and an ample student area for collaborative learning. Planning for the expansion began about 18 months ago and the renovation of the former Tsawwassen Athletic Club commenced nine months later. “The intent of the design was to create a space that is tailored to an older student, that emulates a university type setting,” explained Southpointe Head of School Gordon MacIntyre. “The feedback from our students has been overwhelmingly positive. They love the flexibility of the space that is available to them here. Because our students will have study blocks in their schedule, to provide additional breakout spaces, learning spaces and social spaces to work in the building when they are not in class is a really important component of their learning.” The senior students still frequent the main campus for a number of amenities including the dining hall, library and fitness studios, as well as some specialty classes such as band and theatre. Travelling back-and-forth between buildings only prepares for what they

They will be used to managing those transitions. They will be used to that type of university environment, schedule and routine that sometimes has them moving between buildings.” The Senior School Campus also opens up additional space at the main campus as the academy’s enrollment numbers continue to increase. “Our school is growing. We are receiving very high interest and increasingly our school is comprised of local families. Almost 45 percent of the school is now local families that live in Delta, so in order to accommodate that growth, we wanted to create an additional learning space for the senior campus,” added MacIntyre. “We know as the school grows and matures, we have a longer term master campus plan. It would see us looking to construct additional facilities on our current site at some point in the future. In

the meantime, we can create a very state of the art space for our senior students that accommodates them and also allows us to grow the school.”

It was 1984. Drive-in movies were still a thing, Prince’s Purple Rain was album of the year and Sandra Diewert was hired for her first-ever job as part of the original crew at the brand new Ladner McDonald’s. Little did the Grade 11 South Delta Secondary student know at the time the “Golden Arch” journey she was about to embark on. “McDonald’s actually came to our school to do interviews in the cafeteria. I was a shy kid, but I thought why not at that point,” recalled Diewert. “When I was told I got the job my thought was ‘awesome’ and I went to the Town and Country Inn for the orientation.” Addressing his newlyhired staff was manager Steve Krawchuk. “He was in front of the

We’re just all looking at each other as I was just 15 at the time.” Those certainly proved to be prophetic words. Thirty-eight years later, Krawchuk now owns the Ladner McDonald’s

along with three other franchises, including Tsawwassen, while Diewert serves as his operations supervisor for the four locations. The pair have been busy with the Ladner restaurant’s grand re-opening celebration this weekend following an extensive renovation. Diewert initially worked at the Ladner location for more than three years and was promoted to a swing manager. She then made an inquiry about working out of the McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada regional office in Burnaby. Her dad was an accountant and she always had an interest in working with numbers. She started as a data entry clerk in accounting and also did night courses at BCIT, which the company paid for, towards earning her Certified General Accountant (CGA). Diewert was doing bookkeeping and accounting when she was approached about a position in purchasing. She got the job and was soon off to

Hamburger University, a training facility at the McDonald’s world headquarters in Chicago, for additional learning. More education followed at Douglas College, again paid by McDonald’s. Diewert eventually left the company but would occasionally see Krawchuk since both lived in Ladner. “I would tell him that if ever he needed help to just let me know. I could always do it on a weekend,” said Diewert. “Then one day we ran into each other again and Steve, he was like are you serious? Will you help me? His supervisor was moving to Edmonton.” It’s now been four years since Diewert reunited with her first-ever boss. “What I really like people to know out there is McDonald’s isn’t just about serving hamburgers. There’s so much more behind it with the training with the opportunities. If you want to get into management, they will give you all the training you need,” added Diewert.

Members of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, friends of Rotary and students from the Interact Club of South Delta Secondary went to work Saturday helping to clean up a large beach area in Tsawwassen. The group met up just off the Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway to clean up Tsawwassen Beach as well as the Causeway Beach. They were joined by special guest Alison Wood from Ocean Ambassadors, who has been a recent guest speaker at the club on the topic of shoreline stewardship.

“We had 14 Interactors led by co-president Mateo Mazari who directed the traffic with teams of three or four people who did their best to clean the debris off both beaches,” said Rotarian Rick Lewall. “We had seven Rotarians and two children of one of the Rotarians as well as the Interact teacher liaison Heather Pue. It was fantastic. We were out there for two hours and the weather cooperated too.” A large mound of garbage was collected including a very large soggy chesterfield cushion and a rusty frame for a beach chair. Lewall offered thanks

to the City of Delta who supplied garbage bags and garbage pickers. “The students really did a good job. They organized everyone, got into a lot of the tough areas and really made a great project out of this,” he said. “We are going to be doing a new environmental program called Pickup 3, with the City of Delta, Ocean Ambassadors and Global Container Terminals. Will have more details on this soon, but the idea behind it, is to empower everyone, including students, to pick up three litre items and telling someone else to pick up three and so on, so if we all get into the habit of

doing that, we will all have a cleaner environment.” Grade 10 SDSS student Vanessa Gilmore said she had a great time participating. “Beach clean-ups are important as they increase awareness about pollution and protect local wildlife,” she said. “It was particularly disappointing to see how many bottle caps, cigarette butts and food wrappers we collected. It was very disheartening to find many micro plastics, knowing how damaging they are to innocent wildlife. I am encouraged by Delta’s participation in the Pickup 3 initiative.”

Delta Hospice Society re-elects board following AGM Technical issues impact annual general meeting held over two weekends IAN JACQUES

ijacques@delta-optimist. com

The annual general meeting for the Delta Hospice Society concluded last Saturday with the membership rejecting Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). According to a news

release from the society, of its more than 14,000 members, 76 per cent voted in favour while only 24 per cent voted against. “Today marks a historic day for our society and for all Canadians who endorse life-affirming palliative care,” said DHS president Angelina

Ireland, who was one of 10 board members reelected. The DHS has been involved in legal issues for the past two years, when members of the board refused to offer MAiD at the Irene Thomas Hospice, which was then operated by the DHS.

Several former DHS directors and others then started the group Take Back Delta Hospice, which fought the DHS for control. They also formed the Heron Hospice Society, which is offering hospice services in the community through online programming.

Also at odds has been the millions in assets of the DHS and the charity thrift shop, which DHS operates in Tsawwassen. Following the legal challenges, Fraser Health assumed operating control last year of the Irene Thomas Hospice and the adjacent Harold and Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care. Recently, Fraser Health announced that the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation would be the charitable arm of Irene Thomas Hospice. Since it lost its provincial funding, the DHS has been providing online services and a 1-800 palliative care help line. The AGM started on Saturday, March 26, but was impacted by technical issues, which forced the meeting to be halted and re-scheduled for Saturday April 2. More technical issues also impacted the second meeting. Jim Levin, a member of Take Back Delta Hospice, who along with several others put their names forward at the AGM unsuccessfully to become DHS board members, says the inconsistent performance of the meeting platform compromised the membership’s ability to participate effectively. “Our community has invested so much time and energy into trying to take back DHS and return the $4 million dollars in assets and income for DHS to restore supportive care,” said Levin. “We thank those who signed up and did the best they could to participate. Delta citizens helped to provide this Charity Shoppe facility and donated and volunteered their time there because they believe in supporting each other in times of grief and bereavement. Our community deserved much better treatment from this board.” Levin said Take Back

Delta Hospice is receiving complaints in the hundreds about the difficulties people experienced at the AGM. “The chair neglected to provide all attendance and voting information, so we are having all the irregularities checked,” he said. Ireland acknowledged the technical issues, but points out that many others had no issues and were able to participate in the AGM fully. Opponents of the current DHS leadership have also complained that many members from outside Delta, including from across Canada, signed on to be members to push the board’s agenda. “The whole issue is where this organization [Delta Hospice Society] goes in the future and that is what we needed to establish,” she told the Optimist. “The highest court of B.C., when we were taken to court, ruled that everybody who gave us a $10 membership fee is a member. The court ruling established the Delta Hospice Society as a national organization. We have done nothing but follow the letter of the law.” She says the DHS, in the future, wants to create another palliative care facility. “This is a good thing. There is nothing wrong with providing more care spaces. There has been a lot of misinformation to rile people up and poison people against the organization,” she said. “If you don’t want to be a part of a palliative care organization, then that is fine. You have an option of the Heron Hospice Society. We are not bothering them and we don’t intend to. We are trying to push forward with a vision as a service organization and all services are open to all in Delta that want to be a part of a palliative care organization.”

Tsawwassen mother-daughter duo selling clothing to support Ukraine ELANA SHEPERT

Madison Fleischer and her mother, Lisa Fleischer, have teamed up to raise funds for Ukraine by selling garments and mugs through their store, Slava Sweatshirts. The store is based out of the X-Treme Clothing Boutique in Tsawwassen. Madison, who is a 23-year-old law student, tells Vancouver Is Awesome that 100 per cent of the proceeds are donated to Ukraine. Half of the funds go to Ukraine’s National Bank and the other half goes to Red Cross Humanitarian Efforts. “My great grandparents were from Lviv [Ukraine],” she explains. “So this is very close to my heart and I knew I had to do something.” Madison says she is the founder and designer for Slava Sweatshirts, while her mother is the chief financial officer and “funder.” There are three different

The mother-daughter duo has partnered up with a local printer to get the designs on crewneck sweatshirts and “super soft” t-shirts — but they are selling fast. “Now that things have really ramped up we’re needing to find another printer who would also be interested in partnering,” she notes. “We have a current oneman show who is doing every sweatshirt by his own hands.” Slava Sweatshirts also sells a Slava Ukraini mug and a Ukraine pin. Madison found a design online to use for the mug and paired it with an Eastern European font style; she makes all of the pins herself. “I thought this would be a great idea to have a lasting impact on the Ukrainian people. While the donations automatically benefit Ukraine — the ability to wear your message is a way we can all support the movement,” she adds. Rotarians in Tsawwasssen have once again opened up their hearts and wallets for a worthy humanitarian cause. In the past few weeks, Rotary Club of Tsawwassen started fundraising to purchase Shelter Boxes to support aid efforts in Ukraine. Rotarian Yvonne Anderson said the club has been working with the ShelterBox program for many years, so when the invasion of Ukraine began, millions of refugees left Ukraine and many more lost their homes. “We decided the best way to help would be to provide housing for people in need,” she said. A Shelter Box is a house in a box. In the box is a large sturdy tent that can

ShelterBox is an international disaster relief organization that handdelivers aid to the families devastated by conflict or natural disaster, to give them safe shelter and the tools to rebuild communities. “One of our members, for many years, helped deliver shelter boxes, so this is an ongoing effort by our club,” she said. “We have given them to Africa before and this time, we decided to fundraise and give three to Ukraine.” She said the call for fundraising was a simple email call-out. “A Shelter Box is $1,250 Canadian, so we set out to raise funds for one and in the small campaign, we ended up with three,” she said.

April spells spring and the return of summer birds, dragonflies, bees and butterflies. Members of the South Delta Artists Guild have looked to the skies for inspiration – so many choices and exciting things to capture. The winged insects, such as butterflies and dragonflies, add a splash of colour seen quickly flitting around the shrubs and flowers to delight to all. Feathered birds bring a smile when you spot a Barred Owl, or a Northern Flicker and a Red Winged Blackbird pecking at the feeder. The hummers, which seem to linger during the cold winter, are joined by the migrating hummers, so put the feeders up soon, and then travel down to Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen to see the latest show. A reminder that April 30 is the deadline for the upcoming Oil and Water juried show which is open to all. There are many prizes and a $1,500 first prize. Tsawwassen dancers get their ‘golden buzzer’ Vancouver dance crew onto semi-finals of nationally televised Canada’s Got Talent IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Tsawwassen’s Emily and Eric Sun have had a ‘golden moment.’ The dancers, part of the 17-member group GRVMNT, are off to the semifinal round of Canada’s Got Talent after receiving the golden buzzer from judge Lilly Singh during the March 29th episode of the show. After a thrilling performance from the dancers, the judges’ heaped praise on the team with Singh telling them “you could win this whole thing,” after she awarded them the coveted golden buzzer. The show is being filmed in Niagara Falls and all episodes have been filmed so far, including the semi-finals. The Optimist first introduced readers to Emily, 19 and Eric, 16, two years ago when both were competing on separate teams on the NBC show World of Dance. “This group was put together specifically for Canada’s Got Talent back in September,” said Emily. “It’s a big group, but everyone has been dancing in the same studio for years.” Eric said the group has been training since last summer. “We really started stepping up when we were getting close to the first show being filmed,” added Eric. Getting the golden buzzer was an amazing moment, they said. “It was like a sign that our hard work paid off, not just the past few months,

but all the years we have been dancing,” said Emily. “The golden buzzer was such a relief for us, but it was an extra bonus. Being on stage in front of those judges, in front of Canada was already such a blessing for us and it was just an amazing experience.” Eric says it is still shocking to even talk about. “Watching that first episode, it really hasn’t sunk in yet,” he said. “To know that we made it past the first round, the amount of tries and practice to get on that stage, it felt unreal.” Emily and Eric said sharing this experience together is life changing for their family. “Honestly, I never thought this moment would come,” she said. “It’s really amazing. I call this team my second family, but it hits a little closer to home when you have an actual family member on that stage. Your bonds grow closer after every practice. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share with my brother after all these years.” Eric said like any siblings they have their ‘moments’ but he wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. “Siblings are siblings, we irritate each other sometimes, but I know what the end goal is and we all have that goal. To grow as a person, to grow in dance and be there with my sister, it’s quite emotional,” he said. The semi-finals air on May 3 and May 10 with the live finale on May 17. Canada’s Got Talent airs Tuesday nights on Citytv.

Ladner playwright donating stream purchases of musical to Ukraine relief DANI PENALOZA

Allen Desnoyers’ historical, Second World War-based musical Pier 21 has striking similarities to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, including the storyline of two Ukrainian sisters fleeing from the Soviet Union’s violence. Last month, Canadiana Musical Theatre Company performed Pier 21 after being invited by Ukrainian refugee descendants. Less than two weeks later, Russia invaded Ukraine. With history tragically repeating itself, said Desnoyers in an email to the Optimist, he is now donating any purchases to stream his musical to the Red Cross’ Ukraine-relief efforts. “There are two Ukrainian sisters in my show who fled the slaughter and

upheaval in U.S.S.R to Poland. They sing, ‘Stalin is a bully, the Russians have no clue. They think he is a Saviour, they do not face the truth.’ Insert the name ‘Putin’ and the song would be the same. Russian soldiers are currently stealing food and kicking people out of their homes, just as my characters describe it. Refugees are leaving with only what they can carry in a suitcase, holding onto precious mementos,” writes Desnoyers. The musical – which captures the adventures, heartaches and hopes of refugees, immigrants, orphans and war brides – is available to watch in high definition for $25 through the Canadiana Musical Theatre Company’s website. “The main goal is to funnel whatever funds I can, as quickly as they come in.

Time is of the essence for people in crisis, facing death by violence, starvation or dehydration,” said Desnoyers. As previously reported by the Optimist, since Pier 21 first opened with Desnoyers’ Canadiana Musical Theatre Company in January 2019, the Ladner playwright has toured the show around Canada, including Halifax where the story began. In 1939, immigrants and refugees fleeing Europe arrived in Canada at Pier 21 in Halifax, where half a million soldiers also departed to fight in the Second World War and war brides and a new generation of immigrants took their first steps on Canadian soil. ness is when you choose to respond differently than the world might expect — with grace and love. Jesus embodied this life of meekness. As the most powerful being in the universe, he could have lived a life of brutal force, but he chose meekness because his way of defeating sin and death was marked by grace and love. His weapon of choice was not a slap, piercing words, or an oppressive force; his

weapons were countercultural love and perfect justice. Jesus says, “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus is saying, “Learn from me; I am gentle (meek).” In a sin-marred world where our attitude of being easily offended and our fight for vindication cause us to pollute this world with more violence and injustice, I pray that our city will be filled with people choosing meekness as a way of life. Jesus demonstrated that there is great strength in meekness. I challenge you to consider this way of radical love, forgiveness, humility, and grace. This is how you conquer the burden of sin and death, and become free to enjoy true rest for your soul.

Making you happy is our first priority. And our second. And third.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). This is a radical and countercultural teaching especially in today’s context where many of us are so easily offended. Our culture might say something like, “Blessed are the ones who stand up for themselves and fight for vindication, for they will rule the earth.” The shocking incident of “the slap” at the Academy Awards demonstrated our tendency to react immediately when we are offended. However, the bible teaches that, “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32). Some people say this kind of thinking represents weakness, but meekness is not weakness. Weakness is when you cannot do anything about a situation; meek-

Upgrade bathroom safety features for seniors

Bathrooms can benefit from updates that improve their form and function. While styles and color patterns may inspire bathroom renovations, improvements to safety also should be considered. Bathrooms can be one of the most dangerous rooms in a house. Bath and shower areas account for about twothirds of accidental injuries in these spaces. Many other injuries involve the toilet. Seniors are particularly vulnerable in the bathroom due to reduced mobility and flexibility, visual impairment and other factors. However, some key modifications can make bathrooms much safer for aging populations. Raised toilet seat: Standard toilet seats are roughly 15 inches high, but elevated seats can raise the bowl an additional two to four inches. Another option is to invest in risers that can be attached to an existing toilet. Grab bars: Seniors may use towel holders as grab bars, which don’t have stability and can dislodge from the wall. Install secured side grip bars by the toilet and inside the shower to make maneuvering easier.

grip for those with arthritis in their hands. Also, handles that are easier for seniors to use can reduce the risk of the elderly losing their balance as they attempt to gain leverage to turn the water on and off. Nonslip mats: Nonslip mats or tape

strips can be used in showers and tub bottoms, as well as outside of the shower to reduce the risk of slips and falls. Rugs should have rubberized, slip-resistant backing. Rounded corners: Choose counters and fixtures with rounded corners. Should a senior fall against something, the rounded corner may prevent serious injury. Shower benches and transfer seats: Benches and transfer seats make it easier getting in and out of the shower. Also, sitting while showering reduces the risk of becoming light-headed or losing balance. Walk-in tubs/showers: Minimizing the threshold to the shower or bathtub is an important safety feature. Some manufacturers make walk-in tubs with doors that secure and make watertight seals. Showers that don’t have a lip or tub to scale also are better for seniors. Lighting: Eyesight weakens over time, so improve lighting with combinations of overhead lighting and softer side lighting. Night lights or softglowing toilet lights can make it easier to get around the bathroom in the middle of the night. -Metro Creative

Here are some ideas to save some costs on renovations Do you still have an avocado green kitchen? Is your living room dank and dark? Perhaps there is only one bathroom for a family of six? Answering yes to any of these questions could serve as the catalyst for a home renovation project. Home improvement projects come in all shapes and sizes - some with huge budgets and others that are more cost-conscious. Regardless of what homeowners hope to achieve with their renovations, a common goal across any price point is a desire to save as much money as possible. Home renovations can be expensive, but there are ways to cut costs. Assess the merit of the project: Remodeling magazine annually publishes a “Cost versus Value Report” that lists the average cost and return on investment homeowners can expect of various types of projects. If you’re planning to sell your home soon, it may be best to focus on repairs and renovations that will generate the most substantial return on investment. Hire a contractor: Even avid do-ityourselfers can sometimes benefit from a contractor’s expertise, particularly

for complex tasks. Don’t waste money by trying tough jobs yourself; rely on an experienced contractor who can get supplies for less money and will do the job right the first time. Refurbish existing features: Rather than a complete gut and rebuild, figure out where you can revitalize existing fixtures and more. For example, refinishing existing cabinets can save you up to 50 percent compared with the cost of new cabinetry. Choose midgrade materials: Certain materials may be all the rage but they come with a higher price tag. Figure out where you can choose middle-of-theroad materials for maximum value. Avoid peak seasons: You’ll pay more to install a deck or a pool right before the outdoor entertaining season. There also may be a premium to get work done right before a major holiday. Do some prep work: You might be able to save by doing some of the demolition and preparatory work yourself. For example, you can tear up old carpeting before the installation of new tile floors. Perhaps you can mend and patch up walls before a paint job. -Metro Creative

Container gardening can be less labour-intensive Gardening is a rewarding hobby that has been linked to health benefits like reduced stress and improved mental well-being. Gardening also can lead to an inviting home landscape full of attractive blooms and/or delicious foods. Backyard gardens have long been planted after clearing a plot of land, tilling and amending the soil, and planting rows of favorite crops. However, gardening can be less labour-intensive and even more successful when people consider the many benefits of container gardening. What is container gardening? As its name implies, container gardening is growing plants inside of containers. These containers can be flower pots, rectangular deck boxes or even large raised garden beds.

beginner gardeners may be more able to control soil conditions inside of a small container rather than a vast ground-based garden, which will require a good deal of manual labor. Pots and boxes also can be grouped together to create eye-popping displays, usually at lower costs than the sheer volume of plants that would be needed to fill out an expansive landscape. Cons to container gardening Container garden plants will not have direct access to the ground, so they need gardeners to create the ideal growing conditions. Developing the right care formula can be challenging. The home and garden resource The Spruce says that drainage is an important factor in container gardening, and most containers do not offer enough drainage holes. If water cannot escape the soil, the roots of the plants can rot and die. It’s not enough to add stones or gravel to the bottom of containers. Drill additional holes in the bottom of your pots. Also, be sure to check on soil moisture so that watering can be adjusted. During hot stretches, plants may need to be watered more frequently.

Plan for plants that play well Grouping plants together can create visually stunning combinations. However, it is important to choose plants that require the same amount of light and moisture. Look at plant tags when visiting the garden centre and select complementary plants, or ask a store employee. Mixing different plant shapes, colours and leaf textures, as well as plants of various heights, can help containers look filled out. Pros to container gardening One of the advantages of container gardening is that plants can be moved in and out of sunlight to ensure the right growing conditions. This isn’t as easily achieved when gardens are stationary. Also,

Gardening can be less labour-intensive and even more successful when people consider the many benefits of container gardening.

Feed plants accordingly Plants need nutrition to thrive in containers. Quality potting mixes will contain fertilizers, but nutrition will wane over time. Every couple of weeks, container plants will need either fresh potting mix or granular fertilizer added to feed them. -Metro Creative

Flood management, the cycling master plan and environmental assessment information are just some of the things that Delta’s Climate Action and Community Liveability Advisory Committee will be focusing on in 2022. Mandated to provide advice on climate change and environmental considerations to council, the committee provided them with a report on 2021 achievements and plans for 2022 during a recent Delta council meeting. “This is an outstanding group of individuals

who care deeply about the future of our city and the future of our planet, and I continue to be very thankful for their ongoing contributions to our city,” said Coun. Dylan Kruger, who chairs the committee. This year, they’ll be helping update Delta’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan, collaborating with the Mayor’s Youth Council on climate action and community engagement-related issues, and providing feedback on Delta’s Cycling Master Plan and Flood Management Strategy. They’ll also be providing feedback on referred inter-agency items

related to Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area Management Plan, on Vancouver Landfill and waste management policies and initiatives, and on the ongoing implementation of the Birds and Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, the Electric Vehicle Strategy and the Urban Forest Strategy and action plan. Finally, they’ll be reviewing environmental assessment information for the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project, the Deltaport Fourth Berth project and any other major external project proposals referred by council. “As we continue to

It’s a group that continues to push the city to do better and to be bolder on our climate initiatives. It is great to have the support of Coun. (Alicia) Guichon and our staff on that, as well,” said Kruger. Guichon, who is vice-

chair of the committee, also emphasized the importance of the work being done and her appreciation for being part of it. In 2021, the group met six times, one of which was a joint meeting with the Mayor’s Youth Council, to receive delegations, information on numerous projects and strategies and offer advice. Among the long list,

they looked at and discussed the Deltaport Fourth Berth project, the Electric Vehicle Strategy implementation, the Urban Forest Strategy, single-use plastics and wildfire management. They also supported FortisBC’s Renewable Gas program, as well as Delta continuing to provide the multi-lingual energy conservation program Empower Me in 2022.

Climate leadership programs expanding across Delta DANI PENALOZA

Contributing Writer

Climate action workshops hosted by the B.C. Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) will no longer just be for Delta’s elementary school students, as the program recently expanded to offer more complex aspects of climate change for secondary schools. Because of that, the City of Delta is providing funding for four secondary school classes to take part in the BCSEA’s “Cool It!” Climate Leadership Training Program this year. “The secondary school program will enable students to explore more advanced concepts through two, 60-minute workshops (in-person or virtual), facilitated by an experienced local BCSEA Environmental Educator. The workshops will focus on climate science fundamentals, local impacts solutions, collective action, climate and social justice, local and global consumption and production

Since 2010, Delta has provided funding for about 10 of BCSEA’s elementary school climate action workshops per year, which were previously

called the “Climate Change Showdown.” This entailed BCSEA providing interactive environmental workshops and contests to students in grades 4 to 7 and focusing on the effects

of climate change and how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The program encouraged students to work alongside their families to reduce energy use while learning about

the impact that we have on the environment. They also learned about changes they could make in their daily lives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and would commit to actions they can do at home. After four weeks, these actions would be reported back for tallying, where the class with the greatest greenhouse gas emission reductions would be recognized at a council meeting at the end of the school year. Adding four of BCSEA’s secondary school workshops will cost the city an additional $2,600 on top of the $5,500 to run the 10 elementary school workshops, which creates a total of $8,600 including the $500 management fee. “Education and outreach to local schools on issues affecting Delta is an important piece in increasing awareness among youth and their facilities, to lay a foundation for change and support in the future,” concludes the staff report.

Thanks to the pandemic, it’s been a two-year wait for the Delta Ice Hawks’ biggest homestand in franchise history with a provincial junior “B” hockey championship at stake. The Ice Hawks are hosting the 54th edition of the Cyclone Taylor Cup for the first time and looking to win the coveted trophy for just the second time in 25 years. Standing in their way are the Revelstoke Grizzlies, Peninsula Panthers and Langley Trappers, champions of the Kootenay, Vancouver Island and Pacific junior leagues respectively. The tournament will feature three days of round-robin action with 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. doubleheaders at the Ladner Leisure Centre starting today (see full schedule left). It concludes with the top two teams playing for gold on Sunday (4 p.m.) while the third and fourth place finishers battle for bronze at noon. The Hawks coming off a 23-day layoff after being eliminated in game six of the PJHL semi-finals by White Rock. They would probably be in very tough if they had to face any of these teams in a bestof-seven series, especially Revelstoke (16-3) and Langley (12-2) that rolled to their playoff titles in convincing fashion. What’s working in their favour is seeing these teams just once and doing it on home ice where they went 5-1 in the post-season and have been training regularly over the last three weeks. “It’s just like playing a game

It’s the old adage that anything can happen in one game between bounces, injuries, goaltending and officiating,” said Delta GM and head coach Steve Robinson. “The better team doesn’t always win in a single game. You give yourself the best chance by doing all the little things, as far as the clichés of staying out of the box, being smart and playing our game. I think it’ll be competitive. I think all four teams are good. “One of the silver linings to the fact that we’ve had extended practice since that last game is we were able to bring our gear (into the LLC) and we

haven’t left. That’s something we normally don’t get the luxury of having, so it’s been really nice to kind of settle into our home base. I do think that the consistency of being here and in your surroundings is going to help.” Robinson got a taste of this tournament and what can happen for the host team back in 2018 when Delta went to Richmond as the PJHL champions. The Ice Hawks opened with a pair of wins then rested some key regulars in a loss to the Sockeyes that set the stage for a rematch 24 hours later. Brian and Harry assisted us with a sale and purchase, the latter took some time as we had a definite image of the property we required! Brian encouraged us in our search, eventually we found the light, bright , spacious condo we had been seeking. Brian and Harry are both very knowledgeable of the supporting companies one needs to use, cleaning crew, home inspectors etc. Made our move easier to have a couple of names given to us for us to make a choice rather than having to peruse yellow pages or internet advertisements. I see Brian and Harry are becoming “Seniors Specialists”! They are well suited for this role, with their promptness, knowledge of their community, and a wonderfully laid back attitude. We are certainly enjoying living in the condo we found together. Thanks guys! Sue and Don. Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford were our Realtors for our first home purchase last year. We felt as though they continually went above and beyond in advocating for us in an incredibly competitive market. They were both enthusiastic and empathetic, recognizing that this was a sometimes overwhelming process. We really appreciated their patience in educating us in the real estate process, both from a buying, selling and investment standpoint. We are so happy with our new home, and feel confident that it is a great place for us now and will remain a great investment in the future. We were so grateful to them for being so honest and pro-active about our options throughout our search. Their referral network also took huge pressure off of us, as I did not have to research into Mortgage Brokers or inspectors, saving us time and stress when it really counted Brian and Harry have taken care of us every step of the way. Thank you Brian and Harry!! Cassidy. Brian and Harry helped us purchase our first home, a townhouse in Port Moody. Their experience, patience and of course, sense of humour were so reassuring through the whole process. We felt they had our best interests at heart and we loved working with both of them. Thanks! Vince and Kate.

Ila’s home was warm and inviting and full of happy memories of raising a family, hosting afternoon bridge games, playing the piano, or entertaining family with a home cooked meal. She enjoyed travelling and her summer vacations in Penticton were a highlight. Music played an integral role in Ila’s life. She managed a band that would play for many dances through the years. Learning music at a young age, she could play any tune on the piano by ear. She participated in every family event and was always next to us cheering. Whether you called her Friend, Mum, Mum-in-law, Aunt, Nanna, or Great-Nanna, you could always count on her support. We celebrate her amazing 107 years of life, and will miss her dearly. The family would like to thank Augustine, Haven House and the many people who helped support and care for Ila. In lieu of flowers, please look for extra time to spend with loved ones. “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” 1John 4:16

MacKENZIE, Catherine Ann October 12, 1952 – March 22, 2022 It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Catherine on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. She died as she lived - with courage, dignity and grace. She faced her illness with optimism and lived each day to the fullest. And though our sadness is deep, we will remember her with joy. Catherine was the first child of Ann and Cy MacDonald. She was born in Yorkton and spent most of her early childhood in Wilcox, Saskatchewan where her dad taught at Notre Dame College. The eldest of seven children, she started life by taking good care of her brother and sisters, something she would continue until the end of her days. These were formative years where she learned so many of the values that she would carry forward throughout her life. She later moved to Regina as a teenager where she attended Marian High School, excelling academically and making many lifelong friends. She first met her husband and soulmate, John, at a Valentine’s Day dance in 1969. They spent more than 50 years together, supporting and loving each other and building a beautiful family. Catherine was especially proud of her two children, daughter-in-law and five grandchildren. Together they had so many fun times, great laughs and shared so much love. She was a pillar of support and a huge influence on their lives. Catherine started her career in teaching. Her warm, friendly spirit and the sparkling energy she brought to her classroom was impressive. After a few years of teaching, she moved into human resources where she really found her passion. For over 35 years, she acted as a valued advisor who was known as a good listener - sincere and caring - with a unique brightness that conveyed a confidence and “let’s do it” attitude. Catherine was a lifelong learner and was very proud to have completed her MBA at Royal Roads University in 2001 where she developed some of her dearest friendships. She later taught a graduate program in Human Resources at Royal Roads. Throughout her professional journey, she was focused on coaching others and helped many colleagues, friends and family members hone their own passions and excel. She was a champion for women’s rights effecting policy changes in the workplace, leading by example and as a mentor to many. Catherine also contributed to her community in many ways; in particular was her volunteerism with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, the Developmental Disabilities Association, the Alzheimer’s Society and support for Plan Canada.

Our family is saddened to announce the passing of Joan Bouman at the age of 81. While we miss her deeply, we know that she is now at peace in the arms of our heavenly Father. Joan was born in Gouda, Holland and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1953. She married Gerry Bouman in 1963. Together, they settled in Richmond and raised 3 children. She loved her family and was the happiest when all were gathered together, celebrating any occasion. There was always laughter and love, in abundance. She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Gerry. Her children Marianne Pel (Peter), Carolyn Bouman and Alan Bouman (Angela). Her grandchildren, Courtney Baker (Jared Sukkau), Danielle Baker, Caleb Bouman and Elena Bouman. Her siblings, Jack Huisman (Jayne), Ted Huisman (Barbara), Aty Williams (Mike) and Gordie Huisman (Linda) and also many nieces, nephews and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 2pm at the Ladner Christian Reformed Church, 4594-54A Street, Delta BC In lieu of flowers, a donation to Myeloma Canada (www.myelomacanada.ca) would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Catherine is survived by the love of her life, her husband, John; children Alexandra and John (Kathy); grandchildren Olivia, Samuel, Margot, Jack and Emma; mother Ann MacDonald; siblings Murray MacDonald (Kim), Marilyn Nies (Jerry), Peggy MacDonald, Maureen MacDonald (Terry) and Mariann MacDonald (Ted); brothers and sisters-in-law Bev Horn (Barry), Reid MacKenzie (Janice) and Gord Schwartz; as well as her many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her deeply. She was predeceased by her wonderful father Cy and loving sister Terry. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Catherine can be made to Canadian Cancer Society – Liver Cancer Research. A Celebration of Life will be held later this spring to remember Catherine. Online condolences can be made at deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home 604.946.6040

BIRTHDAYS

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT

She had a particular passion for interior design and architecture. She loved to transform her homes into beautiful, comfortable and welcoming spaces for all of her friends and family, whether they were from Regina, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver or Tsawwassen. Many appreciated her gift and leaned on her for advice for their spaces. More than anything, Catherine loved people. She will forever be remembered for her warmth and empathy; how she cared for and sincerely cheered on her very large family and many friends; for her always positive outlook and her enthusiasm; her ability to get things done and for her loyalty and integrity. We will miss her welcoming smile, her twinkling blue eyes and her keen intellect. She was indeed a beautiful, gracious woman.
