South Delta has lost a music legend

Jerry Doucette provided his talents for many fundraisers over the years in Delta SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Local Delta music legend Jerry Doucette has passed away. The singer, songwriter, guitarist and Juno Award winner died April 18 of cancer at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, surrounded by family. He was 70. He’s perhaps best known for his song Mama Let Him Play from the album with the same title, which was certified Platinum in Canada in 1978, as well as hitting the Billboard Top 100. The South Delta resident’s band, Doucette, won the 1979 Juno for Most Promising Group of the Year. He was born in Montreal on Sept. 9, 1951 and grew up in Hamilton, Ont. where he began playing guitar at the age of six. He moved to Vancouver in 1972 and played with The Seeds of Time and The Rocket

Norton Band before he was signed as a solo act by the legendary Mushroom Records. A news release from his former publicist Leanne Campbell noted that the title for Doucette’s hit song was inspired by something his dad said when he was growing up. The elder Doucette, Louis, worked shifts and when he came home to find Jerry practicing the guitar his mother would tell their son to be quiet. “Mama let him play!” Doucette recalled his father saying. “Later I thought, what a great title. I finished the song in about an hour.” Doucette released five albums as a solo artist between 1977 and 1999. He continued playing in small venues and clubs OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO in Western Canada until Doucette received the inaugural Mentor of the Arts Award, an honour handed 2018, when heart probout at the annual Tsawwassen Sun Festival. lems put his performing Development Society annual Christmas toy pated in many local funcareer on hold. and Variety - The draisers. drive for Deltassist, He was a frequent Children’s Charity. At the time, Dave McIlroy, one of the organizers, said Doucette was a brilliant guitarist who was admired by fans and loved by fellow musicians. “When you play with Jerry, you raise your game, he brings it out in you. Jerry makes every other player around him better,” he said. McIlroy also said a side many fans don’t see was that Doucette is a family man and loyal friend. In an earlier interview, musician Ken Boychuk described Doucette as “one of the best Hammond B3 players in Canada.” Doucette is survived by his wife of 43 years, Maggie, as well as five children and 10 grandchildren. Details regarding a celebration of life will be provided at a later date.

Message at Delta forum: The stigma must end SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Important messages when it comes to stigma were conveyed at a community forum on the opioid crises, which continues to claim Delta lives. The End the Stigma Community Forum was held at North Delta Secondary Wednesday evening to hear from leaders and advocates on the stigma of drug use and what needs to be done to stop the growing number of overdose deaths. The forum featured a panel discussion and question-andanswer session on how to best support those suffering from addiction in Delta. The panel included Katie Alexander, Tsawwassen First Nation Health and Social Services Manager, Kirsten Hermanson, Manager of Prevention and Wellness with the Delta School District, Kam Singh, Mukti Society Substance Use Counsellor as well as Delta Police Const. Sean Cessford, an expert on street level drugs. Guest speakers included Fraser Health Medical Health Officer Dr. Maulik Baxi, Curtis Joe, a Courage to Come Back Award recipient in 2013, as well as Guy Felicella, a peer clinical advisor and Courage to Come Back award recipient in 2021. Facilitated by Deputy Police Chief Harj Sidhu and with opening remarks by Mayor George Harvie, the forum also had exhibitors who provide crisis, addiction and counselling services including The Little House Society, Deltassist, Fraser Health and the Lookout Society. A collaboration between the City of Delta, Delta Police, Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN), Delta School District, Fraser Health Authority (FHA) and

Members of the Lookout Housing and Health Society showed how to administer Naloxone. It was suggested during the forum that Naloxone should be widely available for everyone in case they come across someone who has overdosed. Delta Fire Department, the event rounded out with demonstrations on how to administer Naloxone. Among the key messages was that people who use substances are not defined by their drug use, punitive thinking by others can distort the reality of what’s happening in someone’s life and that agencies and entire communities must work together to help end stigma to make it easier for people to access support and treatment. Another message was that people with a problem need to be seen and heard without bias. Baxi told the forum it’s an uncomfortable, yet crucial conversation which must take place. Joe, a youth worker for the Delta School District, described his difficult journey in an emotional presentation, saying he experienced much stigma

throughout his life. Every young person is different and may see things differently, so they must be recognized instead of automatically judged and admonished, he said. “We need to stop pushing away and start embracing them...I wish I had someone. I wish I had parents. I wish I had somewhere to go when I was tired,” Joe said. Also describing his heartwrenching story of substance addiction and how he finally began a road to recovery when someone showed they cared, Felicella warned stigma can be just as deadly as drugs, and how society viewed him as a young person drove him to the Vancouver Downtown Eastside. The main driver for many when it comes to addiction and substance abuse is trauma,

something many who judge critically fail to recognize when they see someone with a problem. “How you treat me and how you view me can change the trajectory of people’s lives,” said Felicella. He later said, “How you view substance abuse will have a profound effect on your children and whether they will hide from you.” A social planning update report to Delta council earlier this year noted the pandemic has significantly worsened the opioid overdose crisis in Canada and the impacts are being felt locally. In Delta from January to October 2021, there were 159 overdose events attended by BC Ambulance with15 overdose deaths in Delta. At the forum, the number of deaths for 2021 was updated to 20. A tragic cycling accident on April 14 has taken the life of a longtime Tsawwassen resident. As an avid cyclist and triathlete, Mike Starko, 58, was doing his regular Thursday ride when the accident took place on Sea Salish Way and NuLelum Way near Tsawwassen Mills. The accident remains under investigation by Delta Police. Starko leaves behind his wife Kathy, three children Emma, Zachary and Maria, along with a community where he had many connections. A memorial at the accident scene includes a jersey from the South Delta Riders, a local cycling club he has been actively involved with for years. “He’s probably done that exact ride 1,000 times,” said Emma. “He has been biking most of his life. We are all still in shock. It’s just overwhelming.” Starko not only was a big supporter of his children as they came through South Delta Secondary, but others too. That included chairing the Delta Gymnastics Society board of directors for more than seven years. “He was so heavily involved in sports, the community and social responsibility, yet he was probably the most pres-

ent father you could ask for growing up,” continued Emma. “My mom was always around too, but my dad was equally as much a presence and was just a second father to so many people. He just really cared, loved and mentored so many. “We are so fortunate. We have had so many people we’ve never met, that he’s biked or swam with, that have come to our houses and told us really special stories about him. We’ve really had an outpour of love.” A celebration of life is planned for April 29 at the Beach Grove Golf Club at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking to donate to Right to Play (www.righttoplay.ca), a non-profit organization that always was important to Mike.

Delta aiming to help its farming community SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It will be a new plan by the City of Delta aimed at helping the local farming industry stay viable. Work is well underway to devise a new Delta Agricultural Plan, last updated more than a decade ago, to come up with recommendations and implementation actions the city could undertake and lead. “We are in the midst of doing the ag plan, making lots of headway there,” Coun. Alicia Guichon, a member of Delta’s Agricultural Advisory Committee, told council recently. “It’s been an excellent process. A great consulting firm has been hired. I’m really enjoying the process…we’re going to have this completed before the fall, which is exciting.” Also on the commit-

tee, Coun. Lois Jackson, who was Delta’s mayor when the 2011 plan was formulated, said the current plan was a good one but is now “quite dated” and farmers are looking forward to a new one. The city is also conducting a community survey, which is to be completed by April 29. A virtual community agricultural forum is also being planned for later in the month. At a recent meeting of the advisory committee, the consultant said based on interviews and feedback, so far, there is strong support for agriculture in the community. However, there still is concern over non-farm uses, climate change, waterfowl damage challenges and competing land uses such as parking, sharing the road and trespassing. Some suggestions for

improvements include educating the public on the importance of agriculture, improving infrastructure to support farmers and protecting and preserving farmland. The committee was also told revisions will need to be made when it comes to the current plan’s goals and objectives and new recommendations will be brought forward pending the results of the stakeholder engagement process. The committee was previously told the shift in focus in the new plan will include increasing opportunities for Delta when it comes to engagement with external agencies and stakeholders, focus more on action items that are within Delta’s authority and provide more practical details on how action items could be implemented.

Delta brewery hoping to convert its temporary outdoor seating SANDOR GYARMATI

Notice of Construction Start (April 2022) New Cargo Export Project (PER No. 20-209) Westshore Terminals has been safely exporting coal out of Roberts Bank since 1970 and is now looking to diversify products. The New Cargo Export Project will modify a portion of the existing facility to handle up to 4.5 million tonnes per year of potash (a common fertilizer), displacing approximately an equivalent amount of coal export capacity. The New Cargo Export Project will be wholly located within the existing terminal footprint and include installing similar infrastructure to what currently exists (e.g., conveyors, rail car dumper, etc.) with the exception of a new storage building (approximately 400 m long x 70 m wide x 40 m high). The New Cargo Export Project will be constructed in accordance with:  Permit from Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) (PER#20-209)  Construction Environmental Management Plan developed for VFPA (PER #20-209)  Letter of advice from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, regarding in-water work at Berth 2 (21-HPAC-01463) Construction Schedule: April 2022 to August 2026. Hours of Work: Typical hours of work will be between Monday and Saturday from 07:00 to 20:00. Work requiring trucking of site preparation materials, major concrete pours, and work requiring a shutdown of terminal operations (e.g., tie-ins or equipment installations and commissioning activities) will occur on a 24-hour per day basis. Existing site operations will continue on a 24-hour basis during construction. For questions about the VFPA’s Project and Environmental Review of the project, please contact the Port Authority at 604-665-9047 or PER@portvancouver.com.

Delta council, at its April 11 meeting, endorsed an application by Barnside Brewing Co. to allow the business’s existing Temporary Expanded Service Area (TESA) to be converted into a permanent outdoor lounge. The temporary tents located at the front of the brewery would be converted into a covered seating area to provide better seating and service quality. Council also endorsed an application by the 60th Avenue brewery, located in a rural area of Ladner, to expand its liquor service hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, to 9 a.m. to midnight each day. Submitted to the Liquor and Cannabis Licensing Branch

(LCRB), the application for expanded hours is to accommodate special events, but any live music would end at 7:30 p.m. Delta Police conveyed that it has no objection to the application, which will not go to a public hearing. The application for the outdoor lounge has been forwarded to the Agricultural Land Commission where approval is also required. The B.C. government recently announced it has extended its TESA policy until the end of March 2023. The expedited approval processes and relaxed restrictions were originally introduced to help bars and restaurants and other similar businesses stay viable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Delta council previously endorsed allow-

ing the pre-approval of TESA applications to the LCRB. The province says it approved patio spaces at more than 2,000 establishments during the pandemic using TESA authorizations, which were free and easy to apply for online. Businesses wishing to make their TESA permanent must apply through the LCRB licensing portal for a new outdoor patio permanent structural change for outdoor TESAs, or a new interior service permanent structural change for indoor TESAs. Mayor George Harvie last month sent a letter to Minister of Public Safety & Solicitor General Mike Farnworth requesting that the online process for a TESA be extended indefinitely to ensure the survival of struggling food and beverage establishments.

Anti-idling bylaw coming for Delta

Report to be presented to council in June SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A new anti-idling bylaw is in the works for the City of Delta. During council’s discussion on April 11 about a recent letter from a resident, frustrated about idling cars at schools and wondering when Delta will come up with a bylaw, city manager Sean McGill assured it’s on the radar. He noted staff had a number of green initiatives and bylaws to get completed first including the plastic bag ban bylaw, tree bylaw and Delta’s electric vehicle strategy. McGill noted an antiidling bylaw would be coming up next and a report will be presented

to council by the end of June. The Climate and Community Livability Advisory Committee last year endorsed a proposed bylaw. Council two years ago agreed to have staff look into an anti-idling bylaw, which would be part of a comprehensive series of climate action change recommendations. At the time, Mike Brotherston, Delta’s manager of climate action and environment, said such a bylaw has worked elsewhere. His report to council noted that while Delta has implemented an anti-idling policy for its own fleet, a broader bylaw that addressed idling in the community hasn’t been done.

During council’s consideration of the application for a new drive-thru Tim Hortons in East Ladner a few years ago, concerns were expressed about idling cars. A staff memo on the application noted Tim Horton’s parent company, TDL Group Corp., commissioned a study of the air quality impacts of vehicles using their drive-thru facilities. For the five locations examined, the study concluded that a typical restaurant without a drive-thru creates more emissions due to vehicles starting up and travelling within the parking lot, and a typical site layout for a drive-thru facility produces no adverse air effects to adjacent land uses.

ational Volunteer Week is April 24 to 30. The week is a chance to honour and recognize the importance of volunteers in all our communities. Here in Delta, volunteers are the backbone of many organizations. In today’s print edition, the Optimist pays tribute to several organizations where volunteers play a vital role to ensure that they are a success. ElderCollege Delta is a not-for-profit society comprised of volunteers who provide opportunities for lifelong learning and social engagement for those in the 50-plus age group. I had a lovely interview with three of their volunteers last week. Combined, the ladies whom I interviewed, have more than 40 years of volunteer service with ElderCollege. That is an amazing amount of service to the community. We also spoke with the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, whom we have featured numerous times in the pages of the Optimist. You can’t miss the Auxiliary volunteer army wearing their famous blue smocks. Their 300-plus volunteers put in more than 46,000 hours in their various programs in 2021 helping to raise more than $500,000 to purchase priority equipment for Delta Hospital. Where would our hospital be without the Auxiliary members? Then we have the City of Delta, who rely on volunteers for several of its parks and recreation programs, and the Snow Angels program, where volunteers help shovel driveways in the winter for those citizens who are unable too. There are the Delta Police, whose volunteers greet you at their District Community Police offices, help with speed watch and Block Watch or the reserve constables who help support many events and festivals. Speaking of events, I’m sure many of you enjoyed the Easter celebrations this past weekend hosted by the Tsawwassen Rotary Club and the Ladner Business Association – all made possible by volunteers who gave up time with their families to ensure other families had an Easter to remember. So join me in offering up three cheers to all Delta volunteers. Thanks for all that you do.

Weather and gas prices, the best conversation ice-breakers around

I

’ve always been a little reserved in new places, and struggle striking up conversations with people. But these days, it’s not too hard, if you use the go-to topics that everyone has an opinion - gas prices and the weather. Spring is apparently upon us. The trees are blossoming, the plants emerging from a cold winter, but it doesn’t feel like it is mid-April. Looking out at my car last week and seeing frost on my windshield had me thinking was still February. Although I shouldn’t be complaining with what the folks in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Ontario had to go through last week. I used to ride a motorcycle. I still have it, but it’s been off the road for a while. I always saw mid-March as the time to get the plates renewed and hit the road. This year, I didn’t even think about hauling it out of the garage. I’ve still got the winter tires on my car. They may be staying on for a few

more weeks, just to be safe. Speaking of my car, have you seen the price of fuel? A few weeks ago it was over $2, then down to $1.90, then back over $2. Obviously, world events are having a significant effect overall, but it’s tougher when we live in one of the most expensive fuel markets in North America. We seem to get the same story of refining capacity issues and crude oil prices as the drivers, but there’s a lot that still doesn’t make sense to me. I drive through Richmond

every Thursday evening. It’s not uncommon to see a difference there to Tsawwassen of five to eight cents per litre. Hmmm, that much of a gap in 10 km? What also doesn’t make sense is the most expensive fuel being sold so close to Point Roberts, home of five gas stations and a border I can once again cross. You’d think there would be a little competitive pressure. Apparently not. I wasn’t sure what to write about for this column, but it appears my two go-to conversation ice-breakers have filled it already. And speaking of breaking the ice, how about those Canucks? Sorry, I’m out of room. We’ll have to save that for another time. Disposal fees should be waived for thrift stores

Editor: Re: Charges for disposal from thrift stores There are three thrift stores in the Ladner, Tsawwassen area, all serving their local community in a good cause. All of them are run by very decent, hardworking volunteers. I too volunteer occasionally at one of them. People with good intentions drop whatever not being used at home

for resale, the proceeds of which are put into erstwhile use. Many of the items on examination and testing by the volunteers are not considered worthwhile putting up for sale. All such items are then carted off for disposal at the local landfill. I learned with dismay that the thrift shops must pay for such disposals. Some of the volunteers possessing a pickup are

willing to cart the unsalable items to the landfill. It is a shame that thrift shops would have to pay for the disposal. In my opinion the local municipalities should be issuing passes to the thrift shops for such voluntary disposal. The money thus saved can be added to worthy causes that are mainly run by volunteers. Virtual services made my Sundays Editor: As you know, for the past two years most churches have not been able to have in-person worship. During this time, nevertheless, I have been able to watch the church service on

my computer. I am happy to say we are now back to in-person worship at Tsawwassen United Church, but with masks and social distancing. In the meantime, I would like to thank

those who made the on-line version possible each week - the recorders, the three choir members, our music man and of course the minister. You all made my Sundays. Agnes Jackson

Music series deserves support

Editor: Re: Fine music in Delta As a Tsawwassen resident since 1974 and a regular concert goer, I was delighted when the Vancouver Chamber Music Society brought first-class musicianship

in performance to our community. I clearly was not the only one, as the first concerts were well-attended. A recent outstanding performance deserved to be heard and seen by a much larger audience.

I hope that this rewarding cultural opportunity will regain the support it had initially and thrive again in Delta. I hope COVID-19 will not destroy this treasure on our doorstep. Donald Davis

No peanuts for the squirrels please Editor: It is a very nice life in sunny Tsawwassen. Enjoying seating on the patio or by a swimming pool on sunny days. Looking at green trees and listening to songbirds. Watching squirrels dancing around. All this wildlife is pleasant. But how many times do we need to be reminded that feeding wildlife is not a good idea. Animals having too easy a life will overpopulate and become a nuisance. This is already the case in my corner of Tsawwassen when it comes to squirrels. It is almost impos-

sible to look at the backyard and not see the furry little beast. A fence between neighbours is their highway. It is okay with people who don’t do gardening, but for myself and especially for my wife, the animals are a major problem. She takes care of the flowers and I take care of the veggies. The squirrels are burring lots of stuff in the soil. Mostly walnuts and other similar nuts in the fall. Preferably around flowers. When digging for them later, they also dig out the flower bulbs. Even at this time they destroy the blossoming

tulips. But lately they bring peanuts all year around. And this indicates that we have in Tsawwassen a new resident. The squirrels’ enthusiast without a garden. So I’m appealing to you. Please take under consideration that your hobby of feeding the squirrels is killing my hobby of gardening. If I would start fighting back by killing your hobby it would be illegal. So please give me an even chance and please stop feeding the squirrels with the peanuts and with anything else. Ed Jaworski

Reach for the Stars Gala is back

10th annual event will be in-person in June Reach Child and Development Society’s fundraising gala Wings of Change is aptly named as it moves to an in-person format after two years of pandemic safety considerations prevented it. The ability to socialize and connect at a star-studded event to support kids with diverse abilities is a welcome change. The community has rallied behind Reach Child and Youth Development Society to ensure that kids with needs and their families were not left behind during the pandemic. Now the non-profit organization will bring supporters together again. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to bring our incredible extended reach family and community of supporters together to celebrate our 10th

annual gala in-person,” said Reach Development Manager Kristin Bibbs. “I cannot wait to see everyone after so long and to be surrounded by the generosity of spirit that emanates from such wonderful people coming together for what is always a special, heartwarming evening.” Wings of Change is the 10th Annual Reach for the Stars Gala. Reach applauds the long-term dedication from members of the Reach events committee –Linda Edwards, Christine Sutherland and Khya Fellingham. This year’s event would not be possible without their commitment or the significant support of Major Donor REALCO and Presenting Sponsors Ocean Trailer and Vancouver Fraser Port

Authority. Reach is grateful for the support of all sponsors, prize donors, guests and volunteers involved in Reach for the Stars galas and the help that these fundraising evenings provide to children with extra needs and their families. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on June 4 at Tsawwassen Springs. Steve Darling returns as Master of Ceremonies and will lead guests through the evening replete with good news about how families are helped by Reach programs, a welcome cocktail, plated dinner, live and silent auctions, live music and in-person connections. Gala tickets are $200 each and to find out more and register visit www.reachgala. com.

APPLICATION FOR PESTICIDE USE APPLICATION NO. 402-0683-22-25

Applicant: B.C. Ministry of Forests, 441 Columbia Street, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 2T3 Agent: Kathy Ma Email: spartinaPUP@gmail.com Phone: 604 802-8970 The purpose of the pesticide use is to eradicate invasive intertidal cordgrasses (Spartina spp.), which are designated as provincial noxious weeds under B.C.’s Weed Control Act. Treatment areas will be restricted to infestations of Spartina spp. on cobble beaches, salt marshes, and intertidal mudflats (at low tide) located in Boundary Bay, Robert’s Bank, and Burrard Inlet, but treatment may expand over the course of the permit period to include sites at Sturgeon Bank and Sea Island. The total area proposed for this herbicide treatment is a maximum of 10 hectares annually, spread across approximately 12,488 coastal hectares. Pesticide applications will consist only of the herbicide product Habitat Aqua (active ingredient: imazapyr), and the adjuvant IPCO Ag-Surf ll (active ingredient: alcohol ethoxylate) which will be applied to selected sites within the areas indicated above using backpack sprayers or mounted sprayers. Pesticide application will complement existing and ongoing mechanical removal methods. This is the third application for a pesticide use permit submitted by the provincial government for pesticide use on Spartina spp. The previous six years of herbicide treatments have shown a significant decreasing trend in the overall abundance and distribution of these noxious weeds. Proposed duration of this pesticide use is from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2025. A draft copy of the pesticide use permit application and maps of the proposed treatment area can be viewed online at: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/environment/plants-animals-ecosystems/invasive-species/ integrated-pest-management/pmp-pup

A South Delta artist has teamed up with a pair of Ladner Village businesses, all in an effort to raise funds for Ukrainian relief. An original sunflower painting by Linda Jones, valued at $1,800, a bath and body care package from Hygge bath body home, valued at $250 and a Le Creuset casserole, valued at $370 from Vinca’s Kitchen are the three prizes that will be drawn for at the end of the month. To enter the raffle, purchase a Hygge bar soap or a tea towel from Vinca’s Kitchen. Jones has several of

her paintings on display at Hygee and approached both businesses a few weeks ago with the fundraising idea. “My daughter and I were talking and we decided that this would be a good thing…a raffle and both Hygge Bath and Vinca’s Kitchen jumped on board,” said Jones. “All proceeds will be going to Ukrainian relief. I think people have been thinking, ‘I have to do something’ and what can I do, so here is a way where the community can support.” Both Hygge and Vinca’s say that customers have also just offered donations at their stores, which they are also collecting.

Holly Elementary School teacher Juli Oldham works on teacher candidate Brandon Furtado’s mullet cut. The school and community rallied behind his cause, easily passing the target. Furtado decided to take it further by agreeing to a mullet cut by teacher Juli Oldham. He then added a pie-in-the-face raffle for three lucky students. The end result was $5,125.05. The big day arrived on

April 14. “There’s been a few different initiatives at our school and I think the students are just looking for something to feel good about and take action,” said Holly principal Jacquie von Schulmann. “When we put it out to the community, we were amazed by the response.”

Aiden Atwal may just have a future on the catwalk. The seven-year-old Grade 2 student at Hawthorne Elementary in Ladner made his modelling debut as part of this month’s Vancouver Kids Fashion Week, an event dedicated to children’s fashion and creativity. It was some advice from his grandfather that might have won the judges over when Aidan attended the modelling auditions. “We went to day two of the model casting,” explained his mom Anita. He had been practicing his walk and pose for about two weeks.

Delta Choral Society presents spring show Two performances on April 30 at South Delta Baptist Church IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Choral Society has been working hard in rehearsals as it prepares for its spring concert. Next Saturday, April 30, the Choral Society presents Connections featuring three wonderful choirs and an eclectic mix of choral music - from intimate, a cappella pieces, to full massed choir anthems. Shows will take place at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen. “We chose the theme of connections because it is particularily relevant right now. We want to capture the essence of connections whether that is personal connections, community connections, global connections,” said Choral Society media liaison Julie Lymburner. “I think through the pandemic we all recognized the fragility of our connections in our lives and have become more conscious of that, so we thought this would be a nice opportunity for both

our singers and our audiences to feel the importance of connections and pause to take time on April 30 and reflect on the importance of that.” Lymburner said between all three choirs, there will be more than 70 singers who will take to the stage next week.

Rehearsals have been a bit of a challenge as the choir has navigated the changing provincial health orders. “We are doing full inperson rehearsals once a week and we wear masks. In order to be a part of the choir you also have to be fully vaccinated,” she said.

“We were able to perform in front an audience at Christmas time and we performed with masks. It is still up in the air whether we will be able to do that with our spring concert. Cathrie Yuen, our artistic director, has selected a very challenging selection of music. She really wants

us to learn and grow with each song.” Tickets for the show are available online at: www. deltachoral.ca, from choir members, or may be purchased at the door. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, while children under 10 are free.

Tsawwassen author to release adult debut IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Acclaimed Tsawwassen author Janice Lynn Mather is thrilled to release her adult debut entitled Uncertain Kin on April 26 with Doubleday Canada. A recognized author for young adults, her previous books include Learning to Breathe, which was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and Facing the Sun, which won the Amy Mathers Teen Book Award. Originally from the Bahamas, Mather has lived in Tsawwassen since 2011.

Uncertain Kin is described as a luminous collection of linked stories about the lives of women and girls in The Bahamas and B.C. These 18 beautiful and haunting stories introduce readers to women and girls searching for identity and belonging during moments of profound upheaval. In Mango Summer, little girls begin disappearing from their beds during one lush, steaming August. In Morning Swim, a jogger, newly diagnosed with cancer, makes a sinister discovery on the beach. In Boyo, a woman new

to Vancouver struggles to plant roots in a city that doesn’t seem to want her or her young son. “Some of the short stories are linked to each other, so over the course of the book, readers may see

one character as a young girl and then they may see her as an older woman, maybe as a grandmother, so the stories are somewhat interconnected,” said Mather. “I think it was really happenstance in terms of what books were released first because I have written in various genres for a while now. I think, perhaps, Learning to Breathe was one that I felt was really ready and it was easy to find a publishing home for a full-length novel for, at that time, an unpublished author. Now that I have that under my belt, it has been a bit easier to find a home for shortstories.” Mather says she is

working on a third teen novel, which will be released likely in 2023 and is also working on another adult full-length novel to be released by Doubleday. “I really am excited about releasing Uncertain Kin because shortstories are my first love,” she adds. “I enjoy that smaller, tighter structure that you have with a short story, where you come in and spend a short time with the characters and when that time is done, it’s done. With short-stories there are a number of different opportunities for readers to connect, so I’m excited to see how readers feel about that.”

We incurred debt that we are unable to pay. Why? Because the one who we owe is perfect, God. Therefore all the payments you try to make to get rid of the debt called sin can never get rid of the debt because nothing you do can count as payment to get you back to perfection. Many people believe that by giving enough time, enough religion, enough being a

“good person”… they can pay off this debt that is owed. God does not work like a mortgage that you can pay off over time. He does not reduce the debt because of His nature - His nature is perfect. Once you commit your first sin - you are no longer perfect. Everything you do after that does not work. Sin is a penalty you can’t pay. When Jesus said Tetelestai, the cross at its core, is the reality that the issue of sin was addressed by the death of Christ. On the cross, Jesus Christ died and the Bible says He who knew no sin became sin for us. On the cross, Jesus Christ paid the debt of sin on your behalf. But even though the debt is paid in full, you have to accept Him as your Savior in order to receive this gift. I hope you do.

Making you happy is our first priority. And our second. And third.

The foundation of our Christian faith is what we celebrate at Easter. I would like to focus on one of the statements Jesus made on the cross before he died. In John19:30 Jesus said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. In the Greek language, “It is Finished” is only one word – Tetelestai. The word Tetelestai to the people living during that time meant the completion of a transaction, it was fulfilled. Tetelestai was said with joy, so when Jesus used this word, he was speaking volumes about a task victoriously completed. But what was finished, what exactly was paid completely? The issue of the cross involves at its core the addressing of the problem of sin. It has to do with debt incurred by sin.

Volunteers are the engine that keeps ElderCollege Delta running IAN JACQUES

ijacques@delta-optimist. com

Volunteers are the strength behind many organizations in our community and that strength certainly is shown in the success of ElderCollege Delta. Established in 2003, ElderCollege Delta is a not-for-profit society comprised of volunteers who provide opportunities for lifelong learning and social engagement for those in the 50-plus age group. Events are informative, interactive, and affordable in an environment that is safe and secure. Gail Nicholas, Sally Norcott and Paulette Tattersall are just three of the organizations dedicated volunteers. “I’ve done volunteer work my whole life. I’m

retired now and interested in education and attended a lot of the classes,” said Nicholas. “I have been with ElderCollege for about five years and work on programs, communications and look after the volunteers. There are eight of them who have been assisting us in various positions when it comes to the programs.” She said when some of her other volunteer positions with Delta Victim Services, Hospice and Guiding concluded, she was looking for an avenue to continue to give back. “I just wanted to put my time into this,” she said. “I really believe in keeping your mind sharp and assisting with people over 50.” Tattersall said there are 30-plus volunteers who make up the board,

handle programs, presenters and the ElderCollege Singers who perform throughout the community. Tattersall has volunteered with ElderCollege for 16 years. “I was an educator in the public school system and as I was nearing an early retirement, a good friend who was involved with ElderCollege at that time, and had just retired as well, she gave me a little flack for about a year and then said, when are you going to get on board with ElderCollege,” recalled Tattersall. “To me it was a natural fit. I enjoyed some of the administration work and took on a number of different roles, including the vice president and then went onto be the chair of the board. “Since then I have stayed very much

Norcott has been volunteering with ElderCollege for 19 years. “Paulette is being

modest – she does so much for the organization,” added Norcott. “I help put together the two semesters with her and it is a big job. It also helps that we have a board that is very passionate and really believes in what ElderCollege does.” ElderCollege Delta is always looking for more volunteers. Whatever your pas-

sion, talent or interest, they welcome your involvement. If you would like to get involved with ElderCollege Delta in any capacity, email: ElderCollegeDelta@ gmail.com or leave a message at 604-9430262. You can also find out more about the organization at eldercollegedelta. wildapricot.org.

Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society’s “Blue Army”

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta’s “Blue Army” can always use a little more help. That’s the word from Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society president Cathy Bailey as the invaluable volunteer nonprofit organization is slowly returning its operations to pre-COVID levels. Wearing their iconic blue smocks, the society had more than 300 volunteers contributing 46,000 hours of their time in 2021 to ensure its various programs ran smoothly. Even with COVID limiting operations, $512,000 was donated to Delta Hospital for the purchase of priority equipment. “Well, it’s been very challenging to be honest. We did have to close one of our three thrift stores because of a lack of volunteers and then, of course, we had the fire (in late December 2020) that didn’t help either,” she said. “But people have become more comfortable with just what was

going on in the communities and they have started to come back. Now the (thrift) stores are back up to regular hours and the three stores are all operating. “The café and gift store have still been a bit of a challenge as only so many people are allowed in the hospital. Our revenues were definitely down because of all that but we’re still pretty proud of what we were able to donate.” Delta Hospital Auxiliary also handed out $11,000 in bursaries to local students and run a variety of programs from within the hospital and beyond — all with the objective of providing care and comfort for Delta residents. It is able to make such an immense impact thanks to its amazing volunteer force. “People are so passionate about this auxiliary,” continued Bailey. “They start off by wanting to work and give back to the hospital or the community, and then they discover it’s just a wonderful way to make

Delta Hospital Auxiliary’s “Blue Army” is always in the need of more volunteers to work at its various operations and programs. friends. Also learn new skills and everything too. They wear those blue smocks with pride.” Although most might relate the auxiliary to its operations in the hospital and Ladner Village, Bailey was quick to also point out the variety of other programs potential new volunteers might want to be a part of.

“We have a lovely group of volunteers called Pillow Pals and before COVID they would meet every week in the (hospital) cafe,” she said. “They would get material donated so they can create these comfort pillows. They donate them to people coming out of surgery. They’re just lovely, colorful, cheerful pillows that helps

people be more comfortable after their surgery.” There is also assisting with recreational programs that are run out of Mountain View Manor at Delta Hospital. No matter what skills volunteers want to provide, there is always a place for them. “We have lots of places where we need people to work. We also have our communications unit, for instance where it’s communicating within our organization and also communicating out to the public,” added Bailey. “There are volunteer applications on our website or if you are interested in working at the thrift store you can get an application there. “For people more interested working in the hospital, volunteering in emergency or as a greeter, their best bet is to go to the Fraser Health website as that’s a two tier (application process).” More information can be found by visiting deltahospitalauxiliary.org/volunteering.

These thanks go to the volunteer drivers, the board members and last, but certainly not least, the Girl Guides and Brownies who every Christmas make their own contribution by actually making cookies and other goodies and delivering them personally to our customers. We are always seeking new volunteers. However, we have now reached a point where this has become a major issue. So please, I am pleading with members of our community to seriously consider volunteering for the positions of driver and/or Board Member. Our very existence could depend upon your response! Boundary Bay IODE volunteers give back in many ways

The Boundary Bay Chapter of the IODE supports the community of South Delta. IODE is a registered Canadian women’s charitable organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children, youth and those in need, through educational, social services and citizenship programs. “Even though the Chapter supports some national and provincial programs, 87 per cent of the funds the Chapter raises goes towards local programs primarily in South Delta,” said Chapter president Frances Dickson. “Membership is open to all Canadian residents. New members are always welcome!” For the past two years, due to COVID19 constraints, fundraising activities have been limited at the local level. The Chapter is now very happy to announce that they are resuming the popular social bridge afternoons starting on May 25. Other community services IODE funding supports include: BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, for two puppies to be trained to assist and comfort autistic children and those suffering from PTS and blindness; South Delta Stroke Recovery Society and its speech therapy services; a local Women’s Transition House; the Women Helping Women Project; and members put together a food hamper to a family to help them through the Christmas holidays. Volunteers help strengthen community connections for Delta Police IAN JACQUES

Volunteers are at the forefront for many programs and services that the Delta Police Department offers in our community. According to the department, prepandemic, volunteers contributed approximately 40,000 hours annually. There are more than 200 volunteers with DPD. Volunteers serve in various capacities through the District Community Police offices, Reserve Constable Program, Police Board, Police Foundation and Pipe Band. Last year alone, eight reserve constables were hired as regular members of the force. “On behalf of the Delta Police Department (DPD), I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of the volunteers in our community, whether you volunteer with the DPD or elsewhere in Delta, as we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week,” said Chief Neil Dubord. “I want to take this opportunity to appreciate and recog-

Thank you for all you do.” Everyday connections made by volunteers also provides DPD with valuable feedback about the community’s concerns. This is done in a variety of ways such

as: * Staffing the front counters at district community police offices * Giving more than 1,000 hours to speed and cell watch duties to remind the public to slow down and put down their phone * Bringing public awareness and crime prevention tips to neighbourhoods, and spending more than 1,100 hours patrolling schools and parks * Assisting at traffic control locations at more than 20 community events and parades. “Our volunteers are great ambassadors for the Delta Police Department,” added Deputy Chief Harj Sidhu. “They are vital in enhancing community safety and well-being through the many programs they deliver through our District Community Police Offices. “They were greatly missed during the pandemic, and we are so glad to welcome them back and are grateful for their service in building community connections.” Anyone wishing to learn more about volunteering with the Delta Police is asked to visit deltapolice.ca/volunteer.

Volunteers make our community the best that it can be

The City of Delta is made better by the many residents who offer their time to volunteer in support of the community. During the past two years, volunteers have been unwavering in their dedication in helping our community through the pandemic. With restrictions lifting, Delta is excited to welcome residents back to their facilities and sign up for some exciting opportunities. The City of Delta’s Parks, Recreation and Culture team will be making volunteer opportunities available very soon. Look for the return of Delta’s special events this summer, which will allow volunteers to be a part of the on-ground action. In addition, Summer Day camps are the perfect opportunity for high school students looking to gain experience working with children in a day camp setting. These camps run all summer long at various locations throughout Delta. This is a great way to build your resume, complete hours for school requirements and have a fun summer. Delta’s Climate Action and Environment team also has volunteer opportunities, including the community invasive plant pulls. This is a great

opportunity to help clean up one of our City’s greatest assets — our beautiful environment. The next event will take place at Pebble Hill Park on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. This year, the City of Delta is partnering with Delta Naturalists’ Society where volunteers can help inventory biodiversity using iNaturalist. For more information, visit: www.delta.ca. The City of Delta wants to thank and recognize the volunteers who have continued to join some of their long-standing programs, such as the Snow Angels program, which pairs seniors or people with disabilities with a nearby volunteer who clears snow and ice from the resident’s driveway and sidewalk. During the 2021/22 winter season, the City of Delta had 51 Snow Angel volunteers assisting 98 seniors during each snow event. Thank you for your tremendous dedication! If you want to volunteer for the City of Delta with Parks, Recreation and Culture, email volunteers@delta.ca. For opportunities with the Climate Action and Environment team, email cae@delta.ca. IS YOUR SKIN SHOWING SIGNS OF AGING? SUPERHERO ANTI OXIDANTS TO THE RESCUE Vitamin A also known as Retinol in skin care, is the most common ingredient found in skin care products and is a powerful Anti Oxidant that stimulates collagen synthesis and increases cellular turn over, resulting in fewer fine lines and wrinkles, as well as less pigmentation.

Do you ever notice that as soon as Spring roles around and we’re beginning to enjoy the longer days of sunshine, we also start seeing more pigmentation on the surface of our skin? This is partly due to free radical damage caused by UV light as well as other environmental stressors. This is the time to call in the rescue team of Anti Oxidants. Anti Oxidants prevent and slow down the damage caused to the cells by these “free radical scavengers” The Anti Oxidant Vitamin C inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase which is responsible for melanin production and therefore less uneven pigmentation occurs on the skin. Vitamin E is an important anti oxidant required for proper function of our organs, including our largest organ the skin.

ADVICE FROM THE

professionals I have heard that enquiries to your credit bureau can lower your score, is that true?

Now that travel is back, what seems to be most popular? With ever-expanding destinations, new river ships, opportunities to explore, and a more intimate feel from a traditional cruise ship, river cruises are on the rise. There is something to suit everyone’s taste with this segment and with innovation food concepts as well as a focus on special interests, river cruise lines are increasingly targeting a younger audience too. With less people than a traditional cruise ship, river cruises may appeal to customers who want to be “covid safe” and travel while not interacting with too many other passengers. Contact us today to find out our upcoming live events with Viking River Cruises and to learn about our Legendary Rivers Promotion which runs from May 16th to 31st.

This can happen when someone is car, credit card or mortgage shopping as each credit request/enquiry to a lender will create a new enquiry to your credit. When several enquiries are made the credit score can drop. One of the advantages of using a mortgage broker is that we obtain a single credit report. This report can be sent to numerous len

Market volatility makes me nervous. What should I do to stop worrying?

Can I wear my hearing aids when exercising or playing sports? Absolutely! If you’re playing a sport with others, being able to communicate with your team is essential to playing well. If you’re working out alone, perhaps out on a jog, who doesn’t love listening to music or that latest podcast? Todays best hearing devices can keep those sounds flowing via bluetooth all in a nice secure comfortable package.

Lisa Manwaring

Hearing aids are robust enough to take on the challenge of your active lifestyle – as long as you take good care of them. Since 2016, most hearing aids feature an IP68 rating, which means they can withstand a tremendous amount of dust and water without being damaged. Just be sure to get into the habit of cleaning your hearing aids Hearing Instrument Practitioner after exercise and removing moisture with Phone: 604-943-0033 5682 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen a case that has a built-in dehumidifier.

If you are nervous about your investments, you’re not alone. Here’s my advice: Filter out the media noise. Dramatic news makes good headlines, but in reality volatility is normal and healthy. Successful investing involves using the “ups” and “downs” to your advantage. Ensure your portfolio is well structured. Your financial advisor should customize an investment portfolio unique to Doug Smith your circumstances, carefully considering your specific BA I CIM® needs for wealth protection, tax efficient income and Financial Advisor comfort with risk. How can you help in designing an ad that will get the readers’ attention amongst the other ads and the articles in the paper?

I went for a denture consultation, and I was told that I required soft tissue management because of irritated and damaged gum tissues. What is this?

Here are the five most important points in creating a good ad: 1. Lead with a strong headline. It should be interesting and try not to be too cliché. Is not everyone tired of all the “Best Kept Secrets” that are in every marketplace today? 2. Use a graphic element that ties into the product(s) being sold and that will attract attention. 3. Make sure your ad copy describes at least one benefit for the potential customer. Why should they buy that product now and/or why should they buy it at all? 4. There must be a call to action. Create a sense of urgency so the reader has a reason to act on the information in the ad. 5. Tell them who you are and where you are. Design a strong logo and use a font relevant to the business you are in. Always include your address, website, phone number etc.

Soft tissue management is a rehabilitation of damaged gum tissues. Irritation and damage to your gum tissue may result from micro organisms harbored in your dentures’ old acrylic, or ill fitting dentures. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove unhealthy organisms contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Second and/or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before continuing the construction of new dentures. Healthy, pink, hard tissues, provide the important base foundation required for a successful denture. New dentures promote a healthy, clean, accurate fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

ADVICE FROM THE

professionals

How can I hold a fundraiser that will benefit Delta Hospital, Mountain View Manor or the Irene Thomas Hospice?

I collect banknotes from around the world. Do you carry any bills in your store? I also have some duplicates and wonder if you also buy banknotes

Every year Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation truly benefits from fundraisers that are organized by people like you, doing what you love, to help support Delta Hospital. Proceeds from these events can be allocated to Hospital’s Greatest Needs or to specific funds such as Cardiac Care, Cancer Care, or Long Term Care. This allows us to support the Delta Hospital Campus of Care which, in turn, helps to provide outstanding healthcare in our Shari Barr, community. Annual Giving Manager

I carry one of the largest selections of world banknotes in Canada.

There are many creative ways in which people can get involved and support us, such as Bruce Leckie’s recent 4x4x48 challenge or the Tsawwassen Springs Festival of Lights. All of these community fundraisers are important and welcomed. Our team is happy to provide you with advice, promotional materials and any assistance you may need. To arrange your own Community Fundraiser please contact Shari Barr at 604 940 9695 or shari.barr@dhchfoundation.ca.

Priced from as little as $1.00 to as much as $1,000.00, I would think that we have bills that you would like. We are also extensive buyers of all notes, from the most inexpensive to very expensive.

Jim Richardson, owner

Right now, my best-selling world notes are from Zimbabwe.

I have a small leak in my hose-bib. Should I bother fixing it? Are there other plumbing things I should consider doing in the summertime?

We have the 10, 20 and 50 Trillion dollar banknotes (yes Trillion is correct) priced at $30.00 each or mix and match 5 for $125.00. This is way below internet pricing, just like many of our banknote prices are.

How can you help me manage my multiple medications?

Your hose bib is certainly worth fixing. It could be something as simple as a washer or it may be something more serious. If it is not a Frost Free Hose-bib, it may have frozen and cracked over the winter. Hose-bibs can cause a substantial flood if not taken care of. If you do need to replace it, make sure you go to a Frost Free Model. I am a big fan of doing things in the off season, when there is not a sense of emergency. When it is Hot out, I think people should be servicing their Boilers and Furnaces. That way they will be good and ready for when the cold comes. It’s also a good time to consider any outside work. Adding Gas lines and BBQ Boxes. Dealing with Drainage issues etc…

We have 30 volumes of notes, from over 100 different counties.

Thanks for this great question. The best way to help you manage multiple medications is by blister-packing or compliance packaging your medications. This simple system stores all your prescription and non-prescription medications in an easy-to-use card with each medication organized by time of day. All you need to do is pop out the medications

Paul Bach Owner

from the card at the appropriate time and take them – no more opening multiple bottles, losing bottles, dealing with different expiring prescriptions or forgetting to take one. Ask us for more information and we would be happy to help. “Your personal pharmacist is with you every step of the way” is not just a slogan –

If you need a hand with anything, give us a call.

How can technology make my life easier at the dentist?

What would I use an organizer for when moving house?

Technology plays a big role in our lives today and is changing at a rapid rate. People come to the dentist dreading experiences that have happened to them in the past. Just coming in for a routine hygiene visit can cause a lot of anxiety for a person. We at Riverside Dental try to do our best at making your experience at our office the most comfortable as possible. X-rays that were a pain to have done are now all digital. This allows the sensor to be very small and comfortable for our clients. With the help of our digital scanner, impressions Dr. Raj Dhiman no longer involve any material in the mouth and down the 604-946-9588 throat. We simply just scan everything that needs any lab work. With this technology crowns can even be completed in one appointment as well. Our Primescan allows us at Riverside Dental to even be able to design future crowns and veneers to the shape and size you’ve always wanted without even touching the teeth. Mock-ups can then be digitally fabricated and placed in your mouth to allow you to see and feel how things can potentially look. Dental freezing anesthetic can be administered digitally and pain free, without the need of a traditional syringe! Technology Is 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta making a big difference and we take pride in making smile@ladnerdentist.com your experience as pleasant as possible.

There is lots to do when preparing to move house. Most houses have stuff in storage areas that may not have relevance any longer in your current day life and now is a perfect time to sort through it. Paying for wrapping and packing supplies for unwanted items, manually hauling it into a moving truck (taking up valuable space) then manually hauling it into a new home only to realize you never wanted it in the JENNIFER first place is a huge waste of time and resources. ILLSLEY-HALL Pre-sorting some areas of your home before getting professional organizer to the packing stage will put you in a good position for moving house and outsourcing a professional will help enormously. I will collaborate with realtors, photographers and moving truck companies on your behalf and keep you on task, meet your deadlines and take care of the packing and unpacking process leaving you to take care of other important things such as change of insurance, www.deliberatedecisions.ca forwarding address, grocery orders and jennifer@deliberatedecisions.ca family/pet care. The U13 South Delta United Hawks (above left) and U13 Delta Coastal Selects United (above right) will take to Metro Vancouver’s youth soccer centre stage on Saturday morning in Ridge Meadows where they will play for their respective Coastal “B” and “A” Cup championships. DCS United have not lost since late September and already have a pair of tournament wins under their belt including in Richmond last fall.

The impressive depth of Delta soccer talent among the boys’ 2009 age group takes centre stage in Ridge Meadows on Saturday. The Delta Coastal Selects (DCS) United and South Delta United Hawks will play in their respective U13 Coastal “A” and “B” Cup championship matches. The Selects will take on the Vancouver F.C. Ultras while the Hawks will be up against Coquitlam Metro Ford Villa, culminating a month’s worth of single knockout games. Regardless of the results, both teams are also headed to this summer’s B.C. Soccer Provincial Cup Championships in early July, with South Surrey hosting the “A” event and Kamloops the “B” tourney. The Selects, which feature talent from North and South Delta, are on quite the roll, having not lost a game since late September. Along the way, they captured first place in their league with a 15-1-1 record and won tournaments in Richmond and Surrey. A 2-1 semi-final cup win over district

rival Coastal F.C. realized another goal, set back when the team was formed 13 month ago. “It’s been a long process, week in and week out, to implement consistent efforts but the boys have done so in exceptional fashion,” said DCS United head coach T.J. Sugars, whose roster features his twin boys Hudson and Cruz Sugars. “We focus a lot on the mental side of the game on top of the technical side of playing the game. “Unlike the team we face in the final from the west division, we are a team comprised and developed from the Delta regional clubs. Only two players out of the 17 didn’t start from either North Delta or South Delta area. As a coach of most of these guys for many years, I’m incredibly proud of their achievements this season.” United’s roster also features: Jon Rodriguez, Najim Saify, Mani Virk, Isaak Funk, Ethan Caldecott, Kessler Curtis, Luca Kapijimpanga, Ben Lindale, Brody Frampton, Calum Moennick, Aiden Ayre, Levi Neufeld, Ryan McKibbin, Raunak Chehil and 2010 born goalkeeper Gavin Wagstaff.

The Hawks went 8-4-0 in league play and produced wins over Vancouver F.C. (2-1) and North Vancouver FC (1-0), before trimming Coquitlam Metro Ford Sevilla (1-0) in penalty kicks en route to the final. Former coach Peter Schaad spent a number of years mentoring these boys from a young age to become the players they are today. “Peter and I both share a philosophy where we encourage the boys to problem solve their own challenges individually and as a team, thus creating an intelligent soccer player and a cohesive team,” explained Hawks head coach René Welz. “Although technical drills are a big part of our soccer practices, our favoured method of learning is replicating realistic game-like situations and walking through key learning points.” Welz also credited additional nurturing with SDU technical director Mike Frank and his staff. “They have consciously implemented a strategy to enter multiple prospect teams over the years with smaller roster numbers versus fewer prospect teams with large roster numbers. The outcome

being more kids in our community involved and getting more time and exposure to soccer at a competitive level from a younger age,” added Welz. The Hawks roster features: goalkeeper Mason Dubnov, Luke Beauchamp, Saj Dhillon, Niklas Ljungberg, Dylan Nakasone, Oliver Welz, Samuel Steele, Dexter Paziuk, Kyle Pearson, Rowan Shelly, Charlie Taylor, Matthew MacKay, Carter Keen, Cole Hudie and Greyson Gough. The team staff also includes assistant coaches Bryan Hudie and Doug Dyck. The team manager is Tracy MacKay. Corner kicks … Three DCS girls teams can also extend their seasons to the provincial championships in South Surrey if they can prevail on home turf in Provincial Cup playin games on Sunday at Holly Park. These matches feature the Coastal “A”Cup semi-final losers playing off for the third and final berth for Coastal region teams. The action starts at 9 a.m. with U13 DCS taking on NWSC Athletica FC. At 11:30 a.m., U17 DCS will battle the BDMS Storm, while the 2 p.m. match will feature U14 DCS facing the BDMS Blaze.

RE/MAX Progroup Realty • 5360 12th Avenue, Delta, BC

I rate Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford a GREAT DUO to buy or sell your home, they truly are the best! They not only service all of the regular community demographics all over BC but are now also specializing in catering to the large senior market. Both have excellent sales skills, information and resources at hand. While selling my condo they had 2 open houses each weekend plus numerous showings and gave me feedback on each occasion. They always asked if it would be convenient. They also ran large Ads in the Homes for Sale Section. “Thank you” just does not seem adequate to convey my great appreciation for a home sale well done by both of them in partnership! Thanks, Susan Brian and Harry listed our house in Tsawwassen and we had an offer within days. They did not stop their work at that time; instead they continued to market the house in case there were any hiccups (there were none!!). They followed through and helped right until the closing. Overall an excellent process and they were a pleasure to deal with. We really appreciated their hard work and commitment to getting us the best deal. Thanks, Bill and Irene. HOPE, Robin Alexander April 22, 1950 − April 13, 2022 With a pronounced sense of loss, we announce the passing of Robin. He is survived by his caring wife of almost 50 years, Lynn; his four boys, Dave, Jim (Tania), Rob (Martina), and Aaron (Lauren); and his ten grandchildren, Ryan, Michael, Morgan, Maia, Aidan, Katelyn, Vincent, Zoe, Vivian and Harrison. Robin himself, was the third of four boys born to Alec and Beverly. He graduated from UBC in Mathematics and Education. He worked in the 70s and 80s as an early systems analyst in payload control with Canadian Pacific Airlines/Canadian Airlines. He left the airlines to become a teacher, working in the Delta School District as a junior high math teacher and an elementary teacher in Tsawwassen and North Delta. He maintained his hobbies right up to the end, including caring for his dog Dolly and home renovations. Your chores and care are done now, Dad. We hope you rest in the peace you always wanted. Love us all. In honour of his memory and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either the SPCA or the OWL Orphan Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.

NIELSEN, Grete Gudrun LAITY, Catherine (Cathy) Moira (nee Murdoch) Catherine (Cathy) Moira Laity (nee Murdoch) passed away at 66 years old with her loving husband Rich, daughter Tessa and son Christopher by her side on March 6, 2022 in Palliative Care at Vancouver General Hospital. She struggled for 7 months at home and hospital with complications resulting from a major pancreatic cancer (Whipple) surgery. She was a fighter to the end. Cathy was born in Vancouver on April 6, 1955 to Jack and Moira Murdoch. She attended Sir Wilfred Laurier Elementary and graduated from Winston Churchill High School. Cathy started her working career at Woodward’s Department Store in Oakridge where she met Rich in the furniture department in 1975 and they married on November 17, 1978. She rose from cashier in the dept to secretary to the buyer of the home accessories division. From there she was hired as a sales associate for Levis Jeans Company and then Secretary to the Vice President of Lee Jeans Canada. She left her professional career to be a stay-at-home mom with her 2 children Chris and Tessa as well as her stepson Chad on weekends. She returned to the work force when the kids left home and spent over 20 years until her retirement as an optometric assistant and office manager for Tsawwassen Optometry.

Grete passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on April 3, 2022. In 1957 Grete immigrated from Copenhagen, Denmark to Vancouver with her husband Pete and son Erik and settled their roots in Ladner/Tsawwassen. Grete kept her family’s Danish roots alive with cooking traditional red cabbage and frikadeller, hosting Danish smorgasbords and decorating the Christmas tree with Danish flag garlands. Grete cherished her time with her family, enjoyed her red wine (she never met a wine she didn’t like), long walks and was an avid Keno and Poker player. She is survived by her loving children; Erik (Mary), Mike (Lynne), Elizabeth (Glen), and her grandchildren Stefan and Sarah (Justin).

Cathy was our shining star for over 43 years. She was a wonderful and caring mother and step mom who gave us all sound advice and guidance throughout her life. She raised two smart, charismatic, caring children with the utmost love and respect. Cathy touched the hearts of all her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She had a way of making people feel comfortable and was the most genuine, compassionate and trustworthy person we know. She is survived by her husband Rich (Rick), son Christopher (Natsuko and Rosie), daughter Tessa (Jeff Pierce), stepson Chad, brother Bob Murdoch (Cindy) their children Andrew and Scott and Mother Moira (100 years young). She will also be missed by her sister-in-law Christel and niece Bianca (Stefan) Bochow, their children Vinny and Charlie, granddaughters Alanis, Lorissa and Rosie, great grandson Jayden, nephews Tom Laity (Sara), their children Danielle, twins Michael and Gabriel, Andrew and Kirsten McFarlane, their children Trevor and Fiona, niece Melissa and Mike Dangerfield, their children Max and Emma and all of her cousins and extended family. Cathy was predeceased by her father John (Jack) William Ross Murdoch and her sister Janet Evelyn McFarlane (nee Murdoch). There will be no service by request. She requested we celebrate her life individually. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to BC Cancer, Canadian Cancer Society, VGH Foundation or the charity of your choice.

STARKO, Micheal Harold June 16, 1964 - April 14, 2022 Micheal Harold Starko was a loving father, husband, mentor, and friend. He passed away in a tragic cycling accident on Thursday, April 14th at the age of 57. He is survived by his wife Kathy, and his three children, Emma, Zachary, and Maria. Micheal was infamous for his goofiness, antics, rock-solid presence, and generosity of heart. He was a second father to many, and was a mentor and influence in the world of sport. A celebration of life is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Friday, April 29th at Beach Grove Golf Course. Anyone who wishes to attend the service is welcome. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Right to Play. https://www.righttoplay.ca
