Province investigating rental building ‘renoviction’ SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Residential Tenancy Branch is investigating what’s been described as a case of a possible renoviction at a Ladner apartment building which could leave many low-income renters scrambling to find somewhere else affordable to live. Ethel Keast, a senior living at an apartment complex at 4552 Evergreen Lane, as well as others in her building, received notices over a month ago from the building’s new ownership that say they must vacate by the end of July and find somewhere else to live. That’s because the building is about to undergo renovations, according to the notice. The Optimist obtained an “Agreement to Vacate and Mutual Release” form that was handed out to the tenants by the new landlord, 4552 Evergreen Investments Ltd., offering compensation to help cover moving and relocating costs. If they signed the release, the tenants would be barred from pursuing any further action including any application made to the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) and Human Rights Tribunal, according to the form. Refusing to sign, Keast would rather stay. She is left to wonder where she can go on her fixed income. Saying the rent in her building will increase by the hundreds once those renovictions are done, Keast said it’s hard enough finding places to rent in South Delta, let alone something at a rate affordable for a senior on a tight, fixed income. “There’s the stress of not knowing. I’d

We’re seniors and I don’t know how to tackle this,” she told the Optimist. Keast wrote to Delta council asking the city to intervene. According to the planning department, the city recently received and issued a plumbing permit to re-pipe the waterlines for all fixtures at the apartment building. Based on the scope of the work, a separate building permit was not required. City staff also noted that they were not

aware of an application by the owner to the RTB to end the tenancies for renovations and repairs. Council agreed to have staff investigate the situation and report back. When contacted by the Optimist for comment, Andrew Rebeyka with 4552 Evergreen Lane Ltd. said that the matter is between themselves, the tenants and RTB, and everything is being done properly. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing said the RTB’s

Compliance and Enforcement Unit is aware of the issue and investigating whether parties involved are in deliberate non-compliance with B.C.’s tenancy laws. The ministry told the Optimist that to protect renters, the province has banned illegal renovictions by requiring landlords to apply to the RTB for pre-approval before ending a tenancy for extensive renovations or repairs. Anastasiia Viekua will be leading her first classes this today in a part of the world she never would have believed she would be a few months earlier. The 27-year-old is the much-welcomed and highlyanticipated newest instructor at Tsawwassen Wellness Centre Pilates. Viekua is among the millions of Ukrainians who have had their lives turned upside down since Russia invaded their country in late February. In desperate need of instructors, it was back in the early days of the war when Tsawwassen Wellness Centre owner Linda Mallard connected with Viekua through the Travelling Pilates Instructors website to see if she would be interested in coming to Canada for the first time in her life. “I’m not sure where they

have gone, but I have not had one Canadian applicant in a year-and-half. I’ve had applicants from India, the Philippines and the United States but the process of getting them here is expensive with no guarantee,” said Mallard. “Back when the war started and people were fleeing Ukraine, I thought if I could find a Pilates instructor who needs to leave and get work, it could help a person or family and I get a teacher. I’m just so very grateful she is here as a very qualified teacher who brings a whole wonderful other experience.” Viekua was granted a visa under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel but her arrival was delayed by weeks as she and Mallard figured out how she would board various flights from Poland to Vancouver without having the visa in her hands yet. She at last arrived on Friday, leaving behind her hus-

band who remains in Ukraine. The couple initially fled their home for her parents’ place in Lviv when the invasion started. At the time, it was considered a safer location. “When the first missile attack happened in Lviv, I started thinking ‘what are my options?” said Viekua who speaks fluent English. “That’s when I saw the post from Linda and we started the process of getting me to Canada. “It took me almost a month and a half to get all documents. All that time I was exhausting myself with thoughts ‘am I doing the right thing?’ With war, there are so many life making decisions every day, so I stuck myself to the idea - I’m going to get a new experience of working in Canada for a while. That’s it. “My husband supported me in any way he could. We both know it’s a challenging way that awaits us. Keeping a close relationship while being away, in

a 10-hour time difference, and not knowing when will we see each other again.” Mallard’s staff and clients have embraced Viekua’s arrival in a big way. “We told our clients what was happening and they responded right away,” added Mallard. “One client (longtime Tsawwassen resident Kathleen Siba) stepped up and said she can live with her, so we immediately got a homestay. Others just donated money and we also had T-shirts made up with the Ukraine flag and colours. Altogether, we have raised just over $9,000 to help with clothing, purchasing a phone and other things. “We were sad here (with what’s happening in Ukraine) and not knowing what to do, so this gave people a purpose. They’ll come in, have Anastasiia teaching them and it’s like they know they helped her.”

The federal riding of Delta could once again undergo a major revision of its boundaries. The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia has proposed a new electoral map for consideration at public hearings this spring and fall. The map introduces changes to federal electoral district boundaries and has been developed through an independent and non-partisan process. Delta had previously been divided with South Delta being part of the Delta-Richmond East riding, while North Delta was attached to Surrey as part of the NewtonNorth Delta riding. By the 2015 election, the boundaries were reconfigured to combine both North Delta and South Delta into one Delta riding. However, Delta could once again be divided as a new riding called Delta would see Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta below 72 Avenue join part of Surrey, extending all the way to King George Highway. Another part of North Delta would be lumped into Surrey as part of a Surrey riding, while another area of North Delta and the River House area of Ladner

would join a newly reconfigured Richmond East. It’s part of many changes being proposed in response to the significant but uneven growth in B.C.’s population. Saying it’s part of a mandated process of regular reviews to make sure there’s fairness, so that ridings with smaller populations don’t have more voting weight than those with more people, Justice Mary Saunders, chair of the three-member commission, told the Optimist the changes are mainly in response to the significant but uneven population growth. She said no one riding, including Delta which on its own is fine, is singled out, but changes needed several ridings away can result in a domino effect. “What’s happened with the Richmond and Delta ridings in particular are a reflection of that bulge in population that is east of there. We needed to find a way to accommodate it,” she explained. Noting geography including rivers and mountains can also pose a challenge in redrawing boundary maps, Saunders said Richmond and Delta have grown but not at the same pace as the ridings that include Surrey and the Fraser Valley. “We’re independent

and don’t have information on how the various ridings voted, so we just looked at it from a population point of view and geography,” she said. Saunders added they hope the public will take the time to comment and give their ideas, understanding that it’s not just about local ridings but a much bigger picture. “Whatever solution it is, it ripples out to other ridings,” said Saunders. The commission says that its main aim in redrawing boundaries, under the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act, is to divide the province into 43 electoral districts that are as close to the electoral quota as reasonably possible. The commission is holding 27 public hearings, in-person and virtual, to gather comments and feedback on the proposed boundaries and electoral district names. One of those will be held at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn on Thursday, June 9, starting at 7 p.m. Those wanting to make a presentation are asked to send the commission a notice no later than a week prior. For more information about the proposed electoral boundary changes, the public hearings or to make a presentation, check out: redistribution2022.ca.

Boundary Bay permit parking program returns SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Annual parking restrictions have returned for Boundary Bay, but at least motorists won’t have to pay for a spot at the beach if they find one. The Boundary Bay Permit Parking Program is now in place from May 1 to Sept. 8 on weekends and statutory holidays. There are no changes to the program from last year. Boundary Bay Regional Park has seen a significant jump in visits, especially since the start of the pandemic, increasing from 923,000 in 2019 to 1.4 million in 2020. The parking lot at Centennial Beach often exceeds capacity, resulting in spillover traffic entering the Boundary Bay neighbourhood. It led to a courtesy shuttle being launched

from the South Delta Recreation Centre two years ago. A shuttle schedule for this year is currently being developed. The City of Delta also initiated a parking permit program on nearby residential streets. During the weekends and holidays, visitors will have a three-hour limit on parking along 4 Avenue, 3 Avenue, 1A Avenue by the boat launch, and 66 Street south of 1A Avenue. City bylaw staff will once again be actively enforcing the restrictions. Boundary Bay residents are provided permits to allow them to park on the streets and boulevards without time limitations. Pay parking, meanwhile, won’t be coming to Centennial Beach, according to the city manager’s office. Having conducted

a public survey, Metro Vancouver last year was looking into the idea of initiating a pay parking program that could have been implemented in time for the 2022 peak season. In 2021, Metro Vancouver launched full paid parking at Belcarra and Lynn Headwaters, but the Centennial Beach proposal would have been a mixture of reserved and free spots. Delta currently has a bylaw banning pay parking throughout the city. That means that not only is there no metered street parking spots, but it’s also prohibited in places where pay parking is the norm in other municipalities, such as Delta Hospital or the Ladner Exchange transit stop. The move by the city was done years ago to prevent Fraser Health from initiating pay parking at the hospital.

Help provide state-of-the-art surgical equipment to patients at Delta Hospital Over 7,900 surgeries are performed at Delta Hospital every year

Public advised to remove bird feeders IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

“I’d had abdominal pain and a fever for a few days before I went to a doctor who sent me straight to Delta Hospital,” explains Thomas Wachowski. “Four hours later, I had surgery for a ruptured appendix. The surgeon told my wife that if I’d waited another day, it would not have gone well for me.” Surgeries like Thomas’s emergency appendectomy are one of many performed daily in Delta Hospital’s busy Surgical Services Department. While most procedures performed at Delta Hospital are scheduled, every single procedure is vitally important, with the hospital providing a wide range of surgeries to help people in the community.

The BC SPCA is asking the public to temporarily remove backyard bird feeders and to empty bird baths due to a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) spreading across the country. Avian influenza - or “bird flu” - is a virus that can affect many different species of birds. This includes farm animals like chickens and turkeys, but can also affect wild and pet birds. The H5N1 strain is considered highly pathogenic, causing severe illness and death in birds. Although waterfowl (including ducks, geese and gulls) and raptors (eagles, hawks and owls) are at highest risk, avian influenza viruses can infect all avian species. The virus is shed by

infected birds through feces and respiratory secretions and is very resilient – it can survive in the environment for several months and continue to infect other birds. “Bird feeders can be sites for disease spread because they encourage unnatural congregations of birds and attract other wildlife,” says Dr. Andrea Wallace, manager of wild animal welfare for the BC SPCA. “Fallen seed is also an especially dangerous source of disease - when birds feed from the ground, they are also exposed to droppings that accumulate below a feeder.” She says the presence of bird feeders and baths can also increase the risk of transmitting the virus between nearby animals such as backyard chickens or turkeys.

“On rare occasions, this virus can also cause disease in humans who have been in close contact with infected birds, or heavily contaminated areas,” adds Wallace. “We need to do everything we can to stop H5N1 in its tracks.” The public is asked to report sightings of sick or dead wild birds to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) at 1-800-5672033. If the report is assessed to require further investigation, a biologist may retrieve the carcass for further testing. “Please do not bring deceased birds to a wildlife rehabilitation centre or veterinary clinic as they will not be able to test for the disease,” says Wallace. For more information, visit spca.bc.ca.

From general surgeries such as orthopaedic, ophthalmology, and gynecological, to cancer-related surgeries, these daily procedures directly improve people’s lives and, in some cases, save them, like Thomas. Since joining the hospital in 2002, Dr. Dan Robibo, general surgeon, and department head of surgery at Delta Hospital, has seen the surgical services department expand and evolve to meet the needs of Delta’s growing population. “As demand increases, we continue to add more surgical services and more surgeons to our team,” he explains. “Our surgical daycare unit is one of the busiest day surgery sites in the Fraser Health region. Over 7,900 surgeries are performed every year in our three operating rooms, and approximately 3,500 endoscopies in our endoscopy suite.” Dr. Robibo continues that by providing a wide range of day surgeries in the community, patients don’t have to travel to other facilities where they would often be placed on long waitlists. “After surgeries, our patients are close to home and close to their families, which improves their experience and ultimately strengthens our community’s overall health,” he says.

Home Care as unique as your family. From basic companionship to complex care, we create a Home Care approach just for you. Safe, reliable and local.

Maintaining a high patient flow depends not only on skilled staff but also on reliable, state-of-the-art equipment. Many of the tools used daily need replacement or upgrades to ensure that healthcare professionals can continue to provide excellent healthcare to patients. “Having state-of-the-art equipment allows our patients to have the best possible outcomes,” Dr. Robibo explains. “For emergency patients like Thomas, our department is a lifesaver.”

®ualicare®

Delta Hospital urgently needs support to upgrade and refresh equipment in the surgical services department. This will allow healthcare providers to supply patients like Thomas and others in the Delta community with optimal surgical outcomes.

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) invited the community to join them May 5 for a 5-km memorial walk on National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirit People (MMIWG2S). Participants were welcomed at the TFN recreation centre where Elder Qw’estanya (Ruth Adams) said an opening prayer and reflected raising her four daughters at a time of fear and uncertainty. “It was really hard for me when they would go out without telling me where they were, then jump in a car and go everywhere,” she said. “I told them I’m going to find you in the ditches dead because that’s what was happening to these women, if you’re even lucky enough to be

They were the leaders before settlers came here.” Another song and prayer followed before the participants braved the unseasonable weather conditions to proceed with the 5-km walk that

took them around the Tsawwassen Mills Mall before returning to the TFN recreation centre for refreshments. The community was invited to participate this year with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions at TFN. Also known as Red Dress Day, MMIWG2S National Day of Awareness is annually held on May 5 to remember and honour the victims, as well as for all Canadians to take action.

OPINION

Op-ed: Newspapers are not packaging JAMIE IRVING, PAUL DEEGAN

A

News Media Canada

cross the world, municipalities and provinces have been moving their recycling programmes to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). EPR is great in theory and in practice. It levies fees on manufacturers and retailers for the packaging that wraps everything from the food we eat to the toys our kids play with. Any parent who has helped their child open a new toy knows that between the thick plastic that practically takes garden shears to open, the twist ties, and the cardboard, there is still way too much wasteful packaging associated with so many products. EPR has one laudable objective: Reduce packaging in the waste/ recycling stream. It does so by shifting the burden of recycling costs from taxpayers to producers. When producers must pay these fees, they innovate and find ways to wrap their products in far less packaging. Since the advent of the Blue Box, newspapers have had the highest level of collection of all recyclable materials – more than plastics and even more than aluminum. Newspapers continue to be a valuable recovered

resource in the recycling stream. They have a stable end market and high commercial value. And recycling newspapers saves trees. Newspapers have always been a public good – The dissemination of news to the public is a necessary element of a vibrant and healthy democracy and a well-functioning society. Fake news – around COVID-19, elections, and many other issues – has highlighted the importance and value of credible news provided by trusted media sources. Newspapers allow the reader to pause, engage, and reflect – providing an important service that is not met through other media. So, what does any of this have to do with extended producer responsibility? Until recently in Ontario, the EPR program in most provinces of Canada has treated newspapers the same as waste packaging. Unlike product packaging, the newspaper is the product. Publishers have moved to thinner paper to lower our footprint. Driving up the cost of newspaper production with EPR fees drives down the content as newspapers are forced to cut pages and, therefore, value to readers. The knock-on effects are a loss of jobs, many of which are unionized, in a sector that is already facing many external challenges, and a less informed citizenry.

FILE PHOTO

Since the advent of the Blue Box, newspapers have had the highest level of collection of all recyclable materials.

Across Canada, newspapers face a patchwork of provincial regulations, administrative regimes, and fees. The levies charged are based on opaque formulas often devised by monopolies controlled by waste haulers, retailers, and consumer packaged goods companies. In British Columbia, for example, the levy on newsprint went up by 80 per cent in a single year, while the levy on plastics remained flat. That’s not fair. We cannot have a misguided system that puts newspapers at risk at a time when the public needs trusted sources of information more than ever before. The unintended consequences of EPR on newspapers are to reduce the number of pages in a newspaper or for the paper to simply close. This has a detrimental effect on both readers and adver-

tisers across Canada. Recently, the Ontario government issued a regulation that will exempt newspapers from EPR levies in the province. Canada’s newspaper publishers applaud this change, and we hope other provinces will follow Ontario’s lead. Alberta is about to put an EPR regime in place, and British Columbia is working through changes in that province. We hope Premier Jason Kenney and Premier John Horgan will exempt newspapers. To its considerable credit, the federal government has taken meaningful steps to support local journalism across Canada. Provincial and municipal governments should not undo that with punitive fees that are based on the flawed premise that newspapers are unnecessary and wasteful packaging.

Fall is a few months away, but time to think about running

I

was reading the Editor’s Note (Optimist, May 5), like I do every week without fail (he is my editor, after all.) He was commenting that not many people have stepped up yet to declare their candidacy for the upcoming municipal election, be it for mayor, council or school board. As someone who ran (and lost) twice, I have a little insight into the topic. So far, only incumbent Mayor George Harvie has stated he will be running again. That’s usually the trigger for others to make a decision – you either believe that person is unbeatable, or you think

there may be a chance for change. The fact there aren’t other candidates coming forward yet says something. others to help get your name out. Delta is bigger than you think. Second, don’t wait until election time to start talking with people, especially if you aren’t an incumbent. You can’t cover Delta properly during the campaign period, you have to be talking with people much earlier. Prepare to give up your summer. Third, make sure you are running for the right reasons. Running to fight for a pet peeve won’t work. And don’t run if you are just looking for a job. It is way too much work for that. Finally, if you stand and don’t win, you are appreciated. You bring

energy and enthusiasm to our community. There are lots of other places to apply that energy through the charities that need you as a board member. That’s how I ended up on the board at Deltassist, which has been a very rewarding and fulfilling role. It’s also how I ended up writing this column. Guess I won after all. A misguided concept Editor: Re: Street FUN-iture pop up parks In view that the City of Delta is planning to reinstall street FUN-iture pop-up parks, I am compelled to write to you regarding my experience with this misguided concept. During the morning hours, the games are used well by younger children accompanied by their parents and or their grandparents. As the day lingers on and due to the lack of any supervision and a responsible management plan for this park and its contents, by the city’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, the games are put through a grueling test by teens who have a disregard for the rules of the games and a

lack of respect for other people around them. During the late evenings, the pop-up park is transformed into a free for all. This includes displays of mischief and bad behaviour just to mention a few; bocce balls launched as projectiles from one end of the park to the other; cyclists riding through and around it; ping-pong balls removed and replaced with golf balls; an office front window broken; disregard to vacate the park at the posted time; partygoers plied with libations playing on loudly and into the early hours of the next morning; users casually seated at patio tables sharing Bong pipes. Bridge Street is a main thoroughfare for private and commercial vehicles

in the Village of Ladner. At the best of times, finding an already limited parking space on this street is infuriating. There is a large residential area nearby that has been inconvenienced by the park on this street. Also, there are professional businesses that scallop the park area. Patients/ clients in need of these professional services can no longer be conveniently dropped off, and, have to precariously navigate their way to their appointments. Clearly, Bridge Street from Harbour Stroll to Delta Street is not a suitable location for a popup park. The rationale for this concept on Bridge Street is incomprehensible, and, its re-installation is very worrisome. Carol R. LeVasseur

The gift of community arts

Editor: In a world that all too often focusses on the negative, a society that seemingly thrives on bellyaching, and media outlets that often highlight wrongdoings, I offer a positive breath of fresh air. I’d like to offer my thanks to one segment of our community who sought ways to entertain us during our darkest periods of lockdown, and who have recently re-emerged to spark joy in so many lives. I am grateful for Delta’s artists, musicians, performers, and their supporters that together have been a constant source of happiness and inspiration for me and so many others. Allow me to highlight

just a few. The South Delta Secondary cast and staff members who produced “The Addams Family” spring musical. Watching those teenagers once again courageously sing and dance their way across the ‘live’ stage and play the uplifting score from the orchestra pit after a two-year hiatus was a joyful reminder that and our future is in good hands. A few days later, I sang with the Delta Choral Society as we presented “Connections”, our second concert with pandemic safety measures in place. There is nothing quite like the experience of creating music with a choir and I’m already looking

forward to rehearsing again in the fall. Finally, and most recently, I was blessed to be part of an intimate afternoon concert at Ladner United Church. “Say it With a Song” was jointly presented by the Ladner Glee Club and the Jazzagals, and offered an array of uplifting songs and jazz standards to a full and appreciative audience. We are continuously granted moments of clarity and joy here in Delta. Continue to count your blessings, find joy in local community events, and let music, or your other passions, feed your soul. Moreover, breathe an ‘attitude of gratitude’ into each new day. Julie Lymburner

Here is one way to acknowledge

Editor: Recently, Victoria city council voted to include in annual property-tax mail outs a letter offering the chance for property own-

ers to make a voluntary contribution, collected by the city, to be passed on to local First Nations. We are on unceded land in Delta. It makes

sense that there be some tangible means of acknowledging that. This seems like one way to begin. Pam Shaw

MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter has announced the inaugural top five award to Lower Mainland police departments and RCMP for their work in impaired driving enforcement. The Delta Police Department was ranked second in the top five with a score of 94. Only Port Coquitlam was ranked higher with a score of 100. Surrey was third with a score of 56, Port Moody fourth with a score of 38 and Langley with a score of 37. According to MADD, the top five awards are the result of five months of research by MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter, which examined public data for impaired driving criminal charges and roadside administrative sanctions from January 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021 for 13

Lower Mainland municipal police departments and RCMP detachments. This data was then compared against the population for each jurisdiction to create a comparable, relative measure of charges and sanctions per number of residents. In the coming weeks, MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter volunteers will be presenting the award to the top five departments. “All the laws passed and all the work we do with public awareness can have a limited impact if there isn’t rigorous enforcement of the impaired driving laws,” says Kristine Li, MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter Director/ Secretary. “These police departments are leading the effort the public expects, and we want to celebrate them.” The data collected by MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter also revealed

that enforcement overall was down compared to earlier periods, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of late-night venues where alcohol is consumed. “It is an honour to have the Delta Police be recognized as one of the top five Lower Mainland police agencies for exceptional work in impaired driving enforcement,” said DPD Chief Neil Dubord. “I extend this recognition to our frontline officers for their hard work and commitment to taking impaired drivers off our roads. “In May 2008, we tragically lost four-year old Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by an impaired driver. As we approach the 14th anniversary of Alexa’s passing, this recognition also renews our commitment to the Middelaer family and the rest of our community to ensure that our roads remain safe for all users.”

Curriculum Coordinator Cody Forbes, the Grade 12 South Delta Secondary students were behind Dressing Delta Red. The project saw them work with textile and art teachers to guide students through the creation of red dresses and other related art as learning tools to educate them on the cause behind Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirit People day. There were 10 participating classes in total from Burnsview, North Delta, South Delta and Delta. Wiggly and Hansen’s Dressing Delta Red idea was the result of their time last fall with Experiences Canada, a national registered charity that helps young Canadians connect with other like-minded youth to explore the country’s social issues. The theme of the online sessions was Truth and Reconciliation. Explore Canada provided them with $2,500 to facilitate their initiative. “We knew that we wanted to do something with dresses because I have some experience with making clothes,” explained Hansen. “Cody kind of had the idea originally and we thought we should go and get some help with people who are experienced with this stuff so we got feedback from Elders as well.

MARK BOOTH PHOTO

South Delta Secondary Grade 12 students Taylor Wiggly (left) and Avery Hansen were behind Dressing Delta Red, a project to recognize Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 Spirit People, inspired by their time spent in Experiences Canada last fall. “We wanted to bring it into the classrooms but do it in a safe of a way as possible as this is a dark subject matter.” “It’s definitely different than everyone making a bunch of (social media) posts and talking about it,” added Wiggly. “This is more personal and actually doing stuff with your hands and learning about it.” Forbes began reaching out to schools about six weeks ago to discuss the timeframe and how the project could be implemented in various classes from textiles to arts. “It was a bit of a heads

up to what the project is going to be so that they could start to think of how they could use that in their classes because we wanted it to be available at every level,” explained Forbes. “Some were making a fully finished red dress and then there was everything in between.” Hansen and Wiggly were quick to put out that the sensitivity of the subject meant the displays were discreetly done at each location. Forbes added the input from district Elders for the project was invaluable.

TFN Youth Centre recognized with ‘Green Building Award’ Dürfeld Log & Timber presented award by Sustainable Architecture and Building magazine IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A Williams Lake company has been presented a ‘Green Building Award’

for its work on the Tsawwassen First Nation Youth Centre. Last month, Dürfeld Log & Timber released “Building a Vision” – a

five-minute time-lapse film showing the creation and assembly of the Youth Centre, which was awarded Sustainable Architecture

and Building magazine’s Canadian Green Building Award 2021. “With the growing concern for the embodied carbon in our

built environment, this Tsawwassen First Nation building stands out for its commitment to that cause,” said a statement from SAB magazine. “In fact, its widespread use of wood and its projected low operating energy demand, may make the building carbon negative for a decade or more.” Dürfeld Log & Timber say they are honoured to have worked in close collaboration with Nancy Mackin Architecture, Tsawwassen First Nation, Converge Construction Ltd., and StructureCraft Builders Inc. to provide the handcrafted Western Red Cedar post and beam frame for the project, as well as coordination of the prefabricated steel and mass timber components. While the TFN Youth Centre incorporates the latest advances in wood construction (including

mass timber), its design and finishing are culturally guided. Artwork at the entry and throughout the structure reflect the long history of the Tsawwassen First Nation people. “This project felt as much like building a work of art and history, as the building of a functional structure,” said DL&T founder Ric Dürfeld. “We believe that this approach – close collaboration and cultural guidance – yields values that are much greater than the building alone.” TFN Chief Ken Baird said he is very proud of their Youth Centre. “I’m especially proud of this new Youth Centre where our young people can go to learn our language and culture, develop new skills and have a safe place to have fun,” he said.

Daughter’s rare genetic condition prompts Ladner mom to write children’s book for charity MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Based on her own experience, a Ladner mom has written a children’s book that she hopes raises awareness and thousands of dollars for research and support of an extremely rare genetic condition. The release of Amy Miller’s book Life with Williams Syndrome: An Introduction to Williams Syndrome for kids, coincides with May being Williams Syndrome awareness month. The paperback is now available worldwide on Amazon for $11.50 with all proceeds going to the Williams Syndrome Association in Canada and the U.S., based on the distribution of sales. Her lofty goal is to sell 10,000 copies by the end of the month. It was two years ago when Miller’s daughter was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome. Olivia, who turns three next month, is missing around 26 genes on one copy of her 7th chromosome. It is characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning challenges. These often occur side-by-side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities, and an affinity for music. “Olivia is a very happy, content little lady – we have loved

her so much from the beginning, as any parents do, explained Miller, a lifelong local resident who also has another daughter with her husband. “We noticed her missing some milestones early on – our first trigger was that she wasn’t smiling when we were expecting her to. The doctors ordered a bunch of tests and about four months later, she was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome. The couple managed to get most of her initial appointments in before the pandemic, including cardiology. Oliva is missing one of her elastin genes which is needed for the body to grow and stretch, including her arteries and veins. That can lead to heart issues and many with Williams Syndrome have needed surgery to repair narrowing of the aorta. Fortunately, Olivia’s heart appears to be functioning well. Most children with the condition will begin walking between the ages of two and three and start speaking at around the same time. Olivia is currently using a walker, but can say lots of words and will even repeat almost anything her parents say. She sees a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and Infant Development person twice a month. “She can count to 20, say her

ABCs and sing lots of songs. She has a few single word commands down pat – like hi, bye, up, down, come. She cruises around using her walker and her ankle braces give her more stability for standing,” continued Miller. “She is constantly giving hugs and kisses. Her ability to connect with people is amazing – she loves meeting new people. She is such a gift and a light. “I’ve learned so much over the past two years though – not only all of the medical details that we need to keep a close eye on for her, but also patience and letting go of expectations. I’ve read so much about Williams Syndrome and made connections with

moms with little ones that have the same condition all over the world.” That’s what has prompted her to create her first-ever book. Her 9-to-5 job is working as a controller for Telus. “I’ve written a short children’s book that will educate people on the condition,” she added. “In the book, Olivia explains Williams Syndrome from her challenges to her gifts in a fun rhyming way that is easy for kids to understand. There is little funding available for research and support for families by purchasing this book, you will help the Williams Syndrome Association.”

Tsawwassen dancers off to finals of Canada’s Got Talent IAN JACQUES

They blew the roof off the building. Vancouver dance group GRVMNT is off to the finale of Canada’s Got Talent after an electric performance on the May 3 semi-final episode. GRVMNT is made up of Tsawwassen’s Emily and Eric Sun as well as other dancers from the Richmond area. The 17-member GRVMNT landed a spot in the semi-finals after receiving the golden buzzer from judge Lilly Singh during the March 29th episode of the show.

Vancouver dance troupe GRVMNT is off to the finale of Canada’s Got Talent after an electric performance on the May 2 semi-final episode.

GRVMNT opened up the May 3 show with an epic performance that drew high praise from all

the judges. “I’m so happy you’re my Golden Buzzer,” said Singh as she threw a little

shade at fellow judge Howie Mandel. “You should be so, so proud. You did some stunts and slips that were so well timed. Your facial expressions – you nailed them. “You are the definition of preparation meets opportunity. You tore the roof off the place.” Guest judge Jason Priestley said they “absolutely crushed it” praising the team for coming up with “unbelievable dance moves.” Mandel said at the start of the show he was asked what he was looking for out of the semifinalists. “This is what I was

looking for tonight,” he said. “Not one mistake.” Following the performances from all of the nine acts, the judges’ panel sent GRVMNT and Toronto comedian Courtney Gilmour into the finals on May 17. The remaining acts will learn their fate through a Canada-wide vote. Only two of the remaining seven teams will move onto the finals. The results were revealed during the May 10th episode, which also featured the second semi-final round of nine performances. Canada’s Got Talent airs on Citytv.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. - John Quincy Adams

Leadership.

It’s a word casually bandied about but means so much to the growth of our personal, business, and community life – especially during the past two pandemic-influenced years. A poor leader can destroy even the most thriving of situations. A strong leader can inspire success where others see failure. And in that mix are the accomplished young leaders, the driving force for a community like Delta to not just survive but thrive.

That is why the Delta Optimist, in partnership with Century Group, City of Delta, and Global Container Terminals, is proud to present the inaugural Top 20 Young Leaders of Delta. A few months ago, we asked our readers to nominate young Deltans whom they felt represented the qualities of a leader. We received over 80 nominations – a tremendous response. From those nominations, we narrowed the field down to 35 nominees. We then sent out a questionnaire to those 35 young leaders. Getting down to the top 20 wasn’t easy.

The qualities we were looking for included: civicminded; success in their field; passion for their work; ethical and empathetic; a focus on developing others; and prioritizing personal development. And we found these qualities in 20 remarkable young leaders. From a police officer to a politician, a chef to a CPA – the winners represent a diverse group of the best of the best. We hope you enjoy reading the following pages to glean a few insights into the personality and characteristics of this year’s Top 20 Young Leaders of Delta.

What was your childhood career dream? Growing up I always dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. What is your best habit? Taking the time to do things right the first time. My guilty pleasure is dancing, I dance almost every day in my house when no one is there to watch me. Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? Together they instilled within me drive, perseverance, ingenuity, and compassion that has allowed me to succeed today. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? At the age of 15, I had a summer job as a shuttle driver picking up tourists from the airport in Mexico and driving them to their condo’s. 100 YEARS I N PA RT N E R S H I P W I T H

What was your childhood career dream? I always considered becoming a teacher, but for years I also wanted to be a pilot like my dad! What is your best habit? I start each workday off with a “quote of the day” for inspiration when I get to the office. What is your guilty pleasure? Eating pastries and drinking tea while reading a novel in bed on weekend mornings. Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? I attribute my work ethic to my parents. They’ve always encouraged me to do my very best in any task growing up, whether that be focusing on my schoolwork or playing fastpitch in Delta. They consistently demonstrated their pride in my efforts but never asked for a particular outcome. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? The two worst injuries I’ve sustained both occurred playing baseball. One as a teenager, one as an adult. What was your toughest career decision? Leaving my teaching job, family, friends, and home in Delta from 2017-2018 to pursue my Master’s in counselling at Acadia University in Nova Scotia was the toughest and greatest career decision I’ve made. It was a life-changing (and sometimes gruelling) experience which has greatly impacted my personal and professional life.

LEAH HUGHES AGE 32 DISTRICT COORDINATOR, SECONDARY FOCUS, INCLUSIVE LEARNING Delta School District

What career highlight are you most proud of? My former teachers in the Delta School District made an impact I still remember fondly today. I’ve been proud as a French Immersion teacher, then a school counsellor, and now as a coordinator, to be able to walk alongside students/ families and learn their stories. It’s an honour. What future goals have you set for yourself? As I’ve maintained my licence the last few years as a Registered Clinical Counsellor (R.C.C.), a future goal of mine is to explore opportunities with individual counselling in a private practice or agency setting in addition to maintaining my work with the Delta School District. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Invest time into the relationships you value. You’ll never regret laughing with a loved one.

What was your childhood career dream? I always thought I would manage and produce large-scale theatrical productions and entertainment events. What is your best habit? At Santevia we strive to “Live Long, Live Strong”. You will find me in the pool or the gym. What is your guilty pleasure? Binge watching episodes of Golden Girls with a bowl of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? While attending university pursing my degree with a full-course load, I accepted an Executive Director position with a provincial sport organization. This provided the pressure necessary to learn the skills I have today resulting in my work ethic. You must put in the effort to make it reality. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? Going bungee jumping or parachuting out of an airplane. I would be surprised if that ever becomes something I did. What was your toughest career decision? The decision to leave public practice accounting, where the career path to partnership with the firm was clear. Moving into industry, working for a SME has proven to be the right decision. The contributions made has benefited the company and my local community.

MICHAEL HUTCHINSON AGE 30 MANAGING DIRECTOR Santevia Water Systems Inc.

What career highlight are you most proud of? Overhauling the BC Summer Swimming Association’s office operations, IT systems and financial controls after a previous employee suddenly departed, and absconded with significant cash, risking the organization’s ability to operate as a goingconcern. At this time I accepted the role as Executive Director while attending university full-time concurrently. What future goals have you set for yourself? Since the pandemic, I have a renewed perspective on health and wellness. Personal goals surround overall health, both physical and mental. Career development and work can not come at a cost to your health, therefore daily routines are an important factor and goal for myself in 2022 and beyond. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Stop telling yourself you don’t want to ever be an accountant. You will end up becoming a CPA.

What future goals have you set for yourself? At this point in my career I’m focusing on the present so my goal is to have a good performance at the World Cup. But you never know, the Olympics is always on my mind! What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Take advantage of new opportunities.

2022

What was your childhood career dream? When I was really little I wanted to be a doctor. As I got older, I wanted to be a writer. What is your best habit? Looking at the big picture before making decisions on the smaller details. What is your guilty pleasure? Staying up late to get things done after the kids go to sleep. Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? I think that I was born with determination, but I feel like work ethic was instilled in me from a young age by my parents. They always kept me busy with lots of activities when I was a kid including competitive fastpitch. Once a season, activity or project was started, it always had to be completed. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? I have travelled to 27 countries. What was your toughest career decision? When I moved back to Ladner, I made the decision to leave the corporate career path and start working in non-profit. It was the best decision that I made as it was where I found my passion.

ASHLI OWEN AGE 39 COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation

What career highlight are you most proud of? I’m proud to be part of the DHCHF team. In particular, when COVID emerged and the world shut down, our Foundation Team, actively chose to be a positive support for the community - helping with in-kind donations, initiating sirens at 7p.m. and promoting community support towards the Delta Hospital staff (to name a few). What future goals have you set for yourself? I want to pass down the importance of community and philanthropy to the next generation. I also want to be a good role model for my kids by continuing to grow in my career, being present for my husband, kids, family and friends and making a positive impact on our community. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? What other people think of me is none of my business. And always trust your gut feeling.

What was your childhood career dream? I always wanted to work with animals and anything to do with helping people that need it. What is your best habit? Always feeling the need to repurpose/give things to others that I cannot use or others cannot use anymore. What is your guilty pleasure? Taking pictures of anything and everything! Playing in ball/foam pits, being a top 10% Google reviewer, McDonald’s, wine! Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? Definitely came from my late mom! I am not sure she ever sat down, I too now have that problem. My Mom was absolutely amazing and a huge part of our community, she helped everybody she could that needed it and I love being able to follow in her footsteps. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? I played & really enjoyed playing tackle football on the competitive girls team in high school. What was your toughest career decision? Choosing to leave the career of being a legal secretary to moving over to the exploration/mining sector. Both were amazing career opportunities that I loved, with great people. I worked in law right out of high school, so it was tough leaving the only industry I knew and “grew up” with.

MICAELA ROBINSON AGE 39 BUSINESS OWNER / OPERATOR / MOM / VOLUNTEER Kitty Kottage / Rock the Boat Seafood / Free table

What career highlight are you most proud of? Career means many things to me, including non-paid, dedicated opportunities that help progress myself & others. I did / do a lot of help with the homeless in Delta, in 2010 I received an Accommodation Award from the Delta Police. That was huge to me, especially since I hadn’t heard of it. What future goals have you set for yourself? Future goals would be to stay on the path I am now with my businesses, and continuing to grow them! With that being said, I also have a goal of being able to spend more time with family, while doing a healthier juggle of family and business! What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Bullies will be bullies; they come in all walks of life. Stay strong, fluff it off; they don’t mean it!

I N PA RT N E R S H I P W I T H

What was your childhood career dream? I have wanted to be a police officer since the age of 11. From a young age I was attracted to the profession largely because of my many positive interactions with the local police department. What is your best habit? My greatest habit is my commitment to my athletics. From a young age I have lived by a very disciplined lifestyle that includes training twice a day, eating healthy and practicing good sleeping habits. What is your guilty pleasure? My guilty pleasure is the occasional cheesecake. I enjoy all sorts of cheesecakes and will alter trips/vacations just to try the local cheesecake shop. Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? My work ethic comes from my parents who immigrated to Canada in the 90’s. I witnessed my parents balance multiple jobs in order to provide a decent life for me. Till this day my brother and I joke that we have never seen our mother sleep; she is always up before us even if we have 5 AM training and goes to bed last making sure everyone and everything has been taken care of. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? I have never tried alcohol in my life. I made a personal promise to myself to not try alcohol until I am completely done competing in sports. What was your toughest career decision? Last summer I switched from the DPD VST which is a team that targets gang activity in the lower mainland to the DPD YLT which in contrast is a team that assists vulnerable youth within our community. I can now reflect back and say that I made the correct decision.

JASPREET SAHOTA AGE 29 CONSTABLE Delta Police Department

What career highlight are you most proud of? My greatest achievement thus far has been the ability to help others rise to their potential. The high school wrestling team that I coach are the defending 3X Provincial Champions and is now regarded as one of the best teams in Canada. What future goals have you set for yourself? In 2023 I want to qualify for the Paris Olympics in freestyle wrestling and I also want to help the NDSS Wrestling team place top 10 at the provincials. In July I am getting married and for that I have the goal of being the best husband that I can possibly be. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? My advice to my 20-year-old self would be to dream big and not put any limits on myself.

What was your childhood career dream? I always wanted to be an architect. What is your best habit? I handwrite a to-do list each morning, and cross off tasks as I complete them. What is your guilty pleasure? I’m a sucker for 90’s RomComs... Who or what is responsible for your work ethic? In no particular order: my family, The Wealthy Barber, my first “real” boss and mentor, and good music. Tell us one improbable fact about yourself? I was once accused of stealing maple syrup from Rideau Hall, but the Governor General vouched for me. What was your toughest career decision? Leaving an unexpected, but established career in public affairs to enter the Police Academy. It’s cliche, but policing is a calling. Trust your gut, always.

JOEL THIRSK AGE 33 CONSTABLE - EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION UNIT Delta Police Department

What career highlight are you most proud of? I am fortunate to have too many (from two careers) to list just one, and all have been the result of true group efforts: from high-risk arrests that everyone goes home safely from, to establishing new teams and implementing progressive ideas. What future goals have you set for yourself? To know better and do better, every day; for myself, my teams, and my communities. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Be present, stretch, and don’t worry about what you can’t control.

The conquest of God

The Apostle John tells us “for whoever is born of God conquers the world.”(1 John 5: 4) Read on their own, in light of human history, these words sound troubling. For conquest implies waging aggressive war, vanquishing an enemy and taking over with no regard for those who have been pushed aside. So these words of St. John need to be discerned very carefully. Let’s start with the word “world.” The “world” is a word defined differently in different places in the Bible. In a positive sense the world can mean all those whom Jesus came to save — which is all of humanity, and all of creation. Jesus defines the world positively in John 3:16 when he says, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.”

Minister’s Minute THOMAS KEELEY

BENEDICTION LUTHERAN CHURCH

In another, negative, sense “the world” means all that which stands against God and all that God values — the sinful system of things that perpetuate oppression, exploitation, and other injustice. As sinful creatures, we are all part of this world and this world is part of us. John is defining “world” in this way. Hear the good news! God has gained victory over this world not through force and vio-

lence, but through love and peace. God has conquered through the cross of Christ, by suffering and dying at the hands of a sinful humanity, and rising again to forgive that same humanity. A key promise of the New Testament is that Christ will return to establish his kingdom in its fullness — a kingdom where sin, suffering and death will be no more. Christ has given us a share in his conquest by forgiving our sin and bestowing eternal life. The response to this great news is heard through the voice of the psalmist: “Sing a new song to the LORD, who has done marvelous things, whose right hand and holy arm have won the victory.” (Psalm 98:1) What is that song? How does it go? It is the song of a life reborn in Christ. It is the Easter song. Let us sing it together with all people today and forevermore.

Search and rescue volunteers ensure local boaters stay safe Volunteers from Station 8 – Delta of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue are dedicated to keeping the waters around Delta safe every day of the year. Dedication is definitely a key word as the trained crews of the all-volunteer group respond to calls within minutes of being paged, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Station leader Rob Gibson says 20 volunteers make up the station’s four crews that rotate coverage throughout the week. When a call is

received, the unit’s boat leaves the dock no more than 30 minutes later, so all volunteers must be ready to respond immediately. “We need dedicated volunteers, that’s for sure,” Gibson says. The rescue vessel is moored in the Point Roberts Marina to provide quicker access to the Strait of Georgia. Gibson says marine search and rescue volunteers are dispatched to all manner of calls, everything from boats running aground and those experiencing mechanical

issues to persons overboard, injuries and health issues. All members have first aid certificates and some have BC First Responder classification. Volunteers also offer boating safety programs, provide pleasure craft checks and deliver lectures on boating safety. Volunteers receive extensive training in a variety of fields, from first aid and radio operations to navigation and radar. The non-profit society also has a dozen or so volunteers that assist with administration

Turning your yard into a vacation-worthy oasis Warm weather means more time to relax outdoors. For those homeowners lucky enough to have entertaining spaces outside, spring and summer provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air under the sun or stars. Over the last few years, families have become especially familiar with what works about their yards and where there is room for improvement. Pandemic-related travel restrictions and early stay-at-home mandates resulted in plenty of time spent in backyards on staycations. Even though many such restrictions have been lifted, homeowners may have seen the benefits of having functional respites right outside their doors. Large or small, here are ways to make an outdoor oasis at home. Create living privacy Living in close proximity to neighbors may make privacy harder to come by. Wood or vinyl fences, however effective, may not provide the all-natural look many people desire. Vertical gardening, which trains easy-care vines like English ivy, Clematis or various climbing roses to grow on trellis or fencing

vinyl

needs here at

adds greenery and privacy. Hedges and fast-growing shrubs also can be used for natural barriers. Provide outdoor atmosphere Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging. Extend the living space Decks and patios can help make outdoor entertaining areas more comfortable by eliminating the need to sit on the grass or gravel. Plus, they add another “room” to the home. When paired with weatherproof patio furniture, such as sofas, loungers and tables, a private seating area can be crafted and utilized for any number of entertaining desires. Hang a hammock Few things evoke feelings of relaxation better than a hammock. Fitted between two trees (or two posts if trees are sparse), a hammock is an ideal place to grab a nap or read a book. -Metro Creative

Are you making the most of every square-foot of your home? Custom made entertainment units, closets, home offices, garage storage & more! Turn your current home into your dream space by creating more usable square footage without moving!

Trees benefit a landscape by serving both aesthetic and utilitarian functions. A home surrounded by healthy green trees can be a sight to behold, and those same trees can benefit surrounding plants and wildlife at the same time. As appealing as trees are, not all trees and landscapes make for the perfect match. Careful consideration of a handful of variables can help homeowners determine which trees will make the best fit for their properties. *Height: Homeowners must consider the projected height of a tree before planting it. Avoid trees that will bump into anything when fully grown, as that can adversely affect surrounding greenery and

pose a safety hazard. *Canopy spread: Trees grow out as well as up, so it’s important to consider their potential width at maturity as well. Trees that spread out quite a bit don’t necessarily need to be avoided, but it’s important that they’re planted far enough apart so they don’t adversely affect surrounding plants. In addition, wide trees that are planted too close together can make the landscape appear crowded, taking something away from its aesthetic appeal. *Growth rate: Growth rate is an important variable because it can affect how quickly homeowners will see changes in their landscapes. Homeowners who want to plant for privacy can consider trees with quick

growth rates or purchase more mature trees that are already near full growth. Those who are not in need of instant transformation can try trees with slower growth rates. *Requirements: Different trees require different amounts of sun and moisture and different soil components to thrive. Homeowners can have their soil tested to determine which trees will thrive in it. Local garden centers can be a great resource for homeowners who want insight as to which trees will thrive in their local climates. Trees serve many functions on a property. Choosing the right trees for a landscape requires careful consideration of a host of variables. -Metro Creative

A guide to outdoor lighting Lighting is an essential component of interior and exterior home design. Not only does lighting add style and make spaces more appealing, when done correctly, it also makes a home safer and more functional. Homeowners who plan to utilize outdoor spaces like backyards, front porches and walkways to the fullest should think carefully about lighting. These guidelines can assist with selecting outdoor lighting fixtures. Security lighting Flood lights and security lights are a good investment for those who want to beef up visibility and security around the home. These lights are highintensity and designed to illuminate large areas. The brightness and reach can serve as a preventive measure to keep animals and even criminals away. Motion-sensor lights will

immediately engage if something crosses the path of the sensor. Wall, post and ceiling lights Outdoor lighting fixtures beyond security options come in a variety of styles. Wall lights are mounted to the outdoor wall of the home. Post lights are often installed on the posts of decks and porches, or are free-standing. Ceiling-mounted lights may be above doorways or installed in any structure that has an overhead area. Warm-colored temperature bulbs in these fixtures can create an inviting atmosphere that is not too bright and jarring, especially when multiple lighting fixtures are working together. Accent and landscape lighting Accent lighting is

designed to enhance the mood and appearance of certain elements of a landscape. Accent lighting is not intended to add bright light. For example, upward-directed lights can be cast on trees or shrubs. Accent lighting also may call out a structure, such as a garden or a fountain. Additional pointers When shopping for bulbs, consider the number of lumens. A standard 100-watt bulb produces around 1,600 lumens. Security lights should range from 700 to 1,300 lumens for optimal brightness. Other lights needn’t be so bright. Furthermore, ensure that any fixtures that are being used are safetyrated for outdoors. Look for the product details or work with an electrician to choose the right lighting choices. -Metro Creative

Wills & Estates

Some things people should know about creating their wills

Drafting a last will and testament is an essential component of estate planning. Putting wishes down on paper helps avoid unnecessary work and sometimes heartache upon the death of a loved one. Wills allow heirs to act with the decedent’s wishes in mind, and can ensure that assets and possessions will end up in the right hands. Estate planning can be tricky, which is why many people turn to attorneys to get the job done right. Attorneys who specialize in estate planning will no doubt discuss the following topics with their clients. * Assets owned: Make a list of known assets and figure out which assets are covered by the will and which will have to be passed on according to other estate laws, such as

through joint tenancy on a deed or a living trust. For example, life insurance policies or retirement plan proceeds will be distributed to your named beneficiaries. A will also can cover other assets, such as photographs, clothing, cars, and jewelry. * Guardianship: Parents’ wills should include a declaration of who they want to become guardians of their underage children or dependents. * Pets: Some people prefer to use their will to also dictate guardianship for their pets and to leave money or property to help care for those pets. However, pets do not have the legal capacity to own property, so one shouldn’t gift money directly to pets in a will. * Funeral instructions: Settling probate will not

happen until after the funeral. Therefore, funeral wishes in a will often go unnoticed, states the legal advisement resource Find Law. * Executor: An executor is a trusted person who will carry out the terms of the will. This person should be willing to serve and be capable of executing the will. People who die without a valid will become intestate. This means the estate will be settled based on the laws of where that person lived, and a court-appointed administrator will serve in the capacity to transfer property. This administrator will be bound by laws and may make decisions that go against the decedent’s wishes. To avoid this outcome, a will and other estate planning documents are crucial. -Metro Creative

A will often needs to go through probate.

A will’s executor or adminstrator can be one person or several people A will is a legal document left by someone who’s died. It lets the court know what to do with that person’s estate A will often needs to go through probate, a process that ensures the will is real and was left by the deceased. Wills usually name an executor, or an administrator, who is responsible for carrying out the instructions in the will. The executor or administrator can be one person or several people. Basic duties of the executor or administrator include: * Completing an inventory and valuation of all assets and debts * Gathering names and addresses of all beneficiaries and next-of-kin * Cancelling subscriptions and charge cards, redirecting mail and wrapping up other personal matters * Taking control of all assets, including the

T

transfer of ownership registrations and the collection of any debts * Paying all valid or proven debts left to the estate (the executor or administrator may be held personally liable for these debts if they remain unpaid after the distribution of the estate) * Filing tax returns for the deceased and for the estate * Selling assets as necessary and distributing the estate * Preparing and obtaining approval from the beneficiaries, heirsat-law or the court for accounts showing assets, receipts, disbursements, and distribution of the estate If no will was left by the deceased, certain individuals are eligible to apply for a grant of administration in order to handle the estate. If successful, the person who is named as administrator is legally able to

distribute the estate. A grant of administration can also be used to assign an administrator if: * The deceased did not name an executor * The executor has died since the will was made and no alternate executor was named * The executor gives up the right to apply to the court for probate A lawyer is not required in order to apply for a grant of administration. If you do hire a lawyer, legal fees are considered a proper expense and may be paid out of the estate (subject to the approval of the beneficiaries, heirs-at-law or the court). Anyone who applies for a grant of administration on their own must be well prepared and ready to do a lot of paperwork. -Information courtesy of Government of B.C.

SDSS grad leads UBC to golf title

Russell Howlett continued his outstanding freshman season by leading the UBC Thunderbirds to top honours at the Cascade Conference Men’s Golf Championships in Oregon. UBC finished four shots ahead of Lewis-Clarke State to secure an automatic berth into the NAIA Championships, slated for May 17 to 20 in Illinois. The South Delta Secondary graduate and Beach Grove junior product nearly took the individual title too, losing in a playoff to Bushnell University’s Andrew Webb. Howlett (70-74-74) and Webb (69-79-70) were all square with three holes remaining in the 54-hole championship. Webb bogeyed the par-4 17th hole, but Howlett missed a par putt on the 54th hole – forcing the playoff. It was back in October when Howlett earned top individual honours, leading UBC to the Canada West Championship.

Islanders open season on Saturday Changes for B.C. Junior “A” League includes reducing schedule to just 14 games MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h - d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A later start to the season with fewer regular season games should only increase the entertainment value for fans of the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League (BCJALL). The province’s top circuit for players between 17 and 21 years of age, has made some significant changes since the last time it played a fullseason prior to the pandemic in 2019. The regular season starts Friday, which is about three weeks later than usual thanks to the schedule being reduced from 21 to 14 games. Each of the eight teams will play each other twice (home-andaway) with the top six advancing to the postseason in early July. The first and second place teams will get byes to the semi-finals while the other four teams (3-versus-6 and 4-versus-5) will play a best-of-three

series to see who joins them. The mid-May start should mean most teams will have key players back on the floor from their collegiate field lacrosse seasons. The extended playoffs are an attempt to provide more momentum for the B.C. teams that will advance to the Minto Cup national championships, typically in late August. The Delta Islanders will be trying to get back to the post-season for the first time since they won their only league title back in 2016. They open their league schedule Saturday when the Langley Thunder pay a visit to the Ladner Leisure Centre at 7 p.m. “There’s a couple of reasons why we are trying this for this year. Each season we go through the trials and tribulations of having kids at school and coming back so late. We want to showcase our premier players and the later start will give teams a better opportunity to

Delta Islanders will open the 2022 B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season Saturday when Langley visits the Ladner Leisure Centre at 7 p.m. play at full strength,” explained Delta general manager Dave Bremner. “With just 14 games, we also expect the intensity of the games to be much higher, which brings out better lacrosse. “There’s also the hope of what we would call

being ‘battle ready’ for the Minto Cup. We’re hoping that with seven games, a little bit longer playoff series, will get us ready playing against the top tier talent.” Bremner went on to add there will be about eight rule changes too

including face-offs that will be similar to the National Lacrosse League. The five-second crease count is down to four and teams now have eight seconds to get the ball across centre compared to 10. All tweaks are to speed up the game.

Trade takes former Sun Devil star’s CFL career to Hamilton MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A former South Delta Sun Devils football star is taking his career to the “Steeltown.” Grant McDonald, a key member of the SDSS 2014 provincial “AAA” championship team, was traded by the Edmonton Elks to the Hamilton TigerCats last week. The 22-year-old, 6-foot-3 235-pound linebacker, is coming off an impressive CFL rookie season, registering 16 special team tackles in 14 games.

Offensive lineman Kyle something good. Saxelid is also headed to “It’s a good deal for us Hamilton in a complex deal and the direction that we are that included multiple picks headed with Grant fitting the in the 2022 CFL Draft, includmold. He is a highly producing the No. 8 and No. 28 picks tive and competitive athlete heading back to Edmonton. that we are excited to have “This wasn’t an overnight here in Hamilton.” deal,” said Hamilton presiThe trade caught McDonald dent of football operations off guard. Grant McDonald and head coach Orlando He had leased an apartSteinhauer. “Grant is a player ment in Edmonton for the we had targeted and in order to get upcoming season with training camp something good we have to give up just days away.

Still, it’s an opportunity he’s excited about with the Tiger-Cats looking to make another run back to the Grey Cup. “I had no idea up until last night (May 2), but you have to take these things in stride. That’s pro sports,” said McDonald who is now going to be apartment hunting in Hamilton with Saxelid. “You know they are a terrific organization that has a solid team. Jays continue torrid start with win in Kamloops B.C. Premier Baseball League frontrunners capture Best of the West Showcase tourney

An outstanding start to the 2022 season now includes a prestigious tournament title for the Delta Blue Jays. Riding a B.C. Premier Baseball League (BCPBL) best 12-3 record into Kamloops, the Jays went unbeaten in five games to capture the Premier Division at the Best of the West Showcase Invitational. An all BCPBL championship game on Sunday saw Delta rally to defeat the Victoria Eagles 5-2. Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Malakai Dubreuil came through with a clutch two-out hit to tie the game and three more runs followed. The Jays’ pitching, which was outstanding throughout the tournament, took over from there with terrific work from Noah Thomas, Noah del Rosario and Noah Bourgeois. Delta opened the playoffs with a 10-2 victory over Académie de Baseball du Canada, based out of Quebec.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Delta Blue Jays went undefeated to take top honours at the Best of the West Showcase. Winning pitcher Hayden Cuthbertson was superb, striking out 10 in just under five innings of work with his fastball hitting 90-mph. The offence was led by Kyle Heburn and Bourgeois with two hits apiece.

Round-robin play started with a 2-1 triumph over the North Shore Twins. Everett Swaim started on the hill, followed by Thomas with a big hold, and Ryan Heppner finishing it off. Kenny Scott, had a big game

going 2-2 with a triple and a double. Delta then defeated Big League Experience 3-0 behind Carson Latimer’s twohitter over five innings. He also struck out seven. Kyle Matsunuma had a pair of hits.

The semi-final berth was secured with a 2-2 tie against Alberta’s Vauxhall Academy. It was Heppner’s turn to shine on the mound and he didn’t disappoint, striking out eight in five innings while showcasing his 90-mph fastball. Extra innings…. -Latimer and Heppner are among 30 players from across the country who have been named to the Baseball Canada Junior National Team’s Dominican MLB Academy Tour from May 11 to 21. The squad will play 16 games over the 11 days against professional players that will be participating in the Dominican Summer League this season. - The Delta Jays Bantam Prep team also enjoyed a strong showing in Kamloops, reaching the semi-final of the Bantam Premier Division before falling to eventual champion Langley Blaze. Delta currently sits second in league play with an 8-2 record.

On Monday, April 25th, I received the news that my dad had passed away. I’m taking some time to process and reflect on all the good memories I have of him. He was a man of few words, and we were never really close, but that was more due to his old school British upbringing − stiff upper lip and all that. On our family camping trips when I was a kid, there was always a camera around. An old film camera with lots of yellow Kodak boxes around.

He was predeceased by the love of his life Joan and leaves behind his four children, David (Fran), Jane (Dan), Chris and Kim; grandpa Bob’s grandchildren Teri, Dustin, Dylan, Amber, Spencer, Brodie, Hannah, Chris (predeceased), Paige (predeceased); great grandchildren, Rhiannon, Isabelle Miller, Isla, Jack, Max and Elsie. He was predeceased by his first great grandchild “Baby Brodie”. Much love and gratitude to the team of 3 North at R.C H for their outstanding care and support. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your choice of charity . Farewell Dad. You were one of a kind!

I remember digging for dinosaur bones in Alberta and finding a coyote skeleton instead. Lots of adventures each summer. Watching the Space Shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral and being in awe of the noise and smoke. Traveling around Canada and the US in our camper van that he built out. He taught me how to fish, play tennis and ride a bike. He made the best Sunday night roast beef dinners with all the fixings, including Yorkshire puddings. When he first immigrated to Canada from England, he worked at CN Rail as a cook, travelling back and forth across Canada until he decided to plant some roots in Vancouver. That’s where he met my mom at the Jericho Tennis Club at an event or dance. He really enjoyed spending time tending to his large gardens. We always had fresh vegetables, and I remember lots of rhubarb pies growing up. He helped me plant my own garden with zucchini, peas, potatoes and carrots. His other two favorite things were playing tennis at the Richmond Tennis Club and wine making. I can almost still catch the scent of whatever he was fermenting in the garage in those big while containers. After he retired from work, he spent time with my mom at their home in Ladner, took her flying in small planes and travelled some. They especially enjoyed their time in Norway, Finland and back in England. In their leisure time, they walked a lot. The trails along the Fraser River were a favourite daily activity or visiting the local bird sanctuary. Trying to identify as many new birds as possible was a fun hobby for them. I could go on, but I’ll leave it there and thank you all for reading if you got this far. If you haven’t spoken to your dad or mom in a while, give them a call or write them a letter. It’ll do both of you good.

HALL, Michael Harry William It is with unbearable sadness and grief that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Dad, son, brother and friend, Michael Harry William Hall. Mike grew up in Tsawwassen and raised his family in Ladner and White Rock. He will be greatly missed by his daughter Hayley (Laurie), son Oliver (Larissa), mom Betty Jo, brother Stephen (Megan), sister Leah (Dave), sister Susan, sister Robyn (Pat), Aunt Ruth, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Bill. From a young age, Dad lived life large, with a natural ability to connect with people, he welcomed them with his warm smile and open personality. Dad was happiest surrounded by the people he loved best. He will be forever missed.

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

PERRY, Wendy A. September 25, 1955 − May 5, 2022

HUNT, Dayton Dwayne January 18, 1934 - April 26, 2022 Dwayne (also known as Pappy, Montana and Mad Dog to name just a few) went to the big ranch in the sky on April 26 in White Rock at age 88. Dwayne was a true cowboy originally born in Ponteix, Saskatchewan to Marjorie and Worth Hunt. After rodeoing around Alberta he decided to try his hand at flying. Starting off with Shell in the Arctic, he then moved on to bigger equipment. Dwayne spent his entire career as a Flight Engineer working for some of the best airlines around the world - British Caledonian, Middle East Airlines, Wardair, Singapore Airlines and finally retiring from Polar Air Cargo in his 70’s. He loved rodeos and he loved flying. He and his wife Virginia-Lee Hunt (predeceased in 2012) had a grand adventure over their 55 year marriage and spent their last years together living on the beach in Point Roberts, Washington. Dwayne loved their home on the beach, crabbing and boating. Dwayne will be missed by his daughter Kari Grist (Mark), son Rob Hunt (Christi) and his three grandchildren - Madison, Jesse and Hannah. They will especially remember the waffles and ice cream that he made them for breakfast. He was GreatGrand Pappy to his first great grandson Asher who he had just met. He will also be missed by his sister Sherry Everett of Tsawwassen.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 28 at 2:00pm at Boundary Bay Airport, Apron 3, Hangar 13. As this is a restricted area, if you are attending please RSVP to: rememberingdwayne@gmail.com for further information.

Wendy was born in Winkler, Manitoba, in 1955 to Harold and Joan Penner. She attended The University of Manitoba and graduated with a Bachelor of Education. In 1977, she came to Vancouver to attend a one−year course in The Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at UBC. During this time she met her future husband, Jim. They were married in 1984 and settled in Tsawwassen where they raised their daughters, Kathryn and Jennifer. Wendy worked in the Delta School District for 40 years in an itinerant position supporting hearing−impaired children. Throughout her career, she developed many lasting relationships with both students and colleagues. After retiring in 2019, Wendy and Jim moved to Sidney on Vancouver Island.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

PUZZLE ANSWERS ON SEPARATE PAGE

Wendy was very creative and had many interests, including weaving, sewing, bookbinding, drawing and painting. Much of her creative energy was spent making keepsakes, for which her family will be forever grateful. In 2018, Wendy was diagnosed with cancer. Her battle with the disease was valiant. She refused to give in and fought till the very end. Special thanks to Dr. Mitchell C.C. Liu at the BC Cancer Agency. Wendy is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters Jennifer and Kathryn; son−in−law Andrew; cherished grandchildren Henry and Isabelle; mother Joan; and siblings Bob, Garth, Kathi and Mark. She was predeceased by her beloved father, Harold. A memorial service will be held for Wendy at St. Andrew Anglican Church in Sidney, BC, Monday, May 16th at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Agency or Wendy’s favourite charity, Covenant House, in Vancouver.
