Central Walk completed sales transaction on May 6 IAN JACQUES

Expect to see some big changes at Tsawwassen Mills in the weeks and months to come. Central Walk has acquired the mall, located at 5000 Canoe Pass Way, completing the acquisition from previous owners Ivanhoé Cambridge on May 6. On Sunday (May 15), Central Walk held an invitation-only gala event to introduce themselves to the community. In a news release, Central Walk chairman Hong Liu, CEO Andy Wang and Investment & Asset Management Director Valen Tam said the sale was jointly produced by the efforts of many parties including Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP, Ds Avocats, Colliers, JLL, Ivanhoé Cambridge, Central Walk, and the Tsawwassen First Nation. “Our first order is to thank landlord Tsawwassen First Nation for hosting this retail masterpiece to the benefit of all surrounding communities and foreign visitors,” said Central Walk. “Mills is a very exclusive international trademark. All Mills centres are superregional retail landmarks, and it is such a privilege to have the newest of just about 20 such centres world-wide in our very community.” Central Walk also offered thanks to Ivanhoé Cambridge. “It is a phenomenal construct and was a phenomenal journey. We pledge

Central Walk is a global real estate owner-operator who specializes in the investment, management, and innovation of retail shopping centres. The company began the migration of its Asianic headquarters to Canada in 2020. They have already acquired three regional-tier shopping centres as part of its efforts to endeavour into the Canadian North American retail market. “At Tsawwassen Mills we will focus on building upon its prominence as a provider of value retail goods in all the

years to come, augmented by a plethora of services, foods, and entertainment,” said Central Walk. “Our top priority is to help facilitate grounds on which each and every tenant can generate greater prosperity.” To reach this goal in the short-term, Central Walk says they have new ideas to increase both traffic and durations of stay through their marketing department; their leasing department will focus on developing a prominent entertainment presence at the property, along with further augmenting the diversity and strength of the existing retail core, services, and foods-uses and their operations

and management team will redouble their efforts to ensure that at Tsawwassen Mills, the maintenance of safety will always be the number one priority. “We have seen a gradual rebound in consumer-ship confidence in the past year, which is a promising sign that retail is finally emerging victorious from the pandemic period of unproduction and uncertainty,” said Central Walk. “Retail will always be a core part of commercial real estate, but it demands innovation and progressive change at the end of every cycle. We are very confident in the future of retail and look forward to the years ahead.”

Delta considers Ladner cannabis dispensary SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta council on Monday gave preliminary approval for a proposed cannabis dispensary in Ladner while also sending the application to a public hearing. The rezoning application by Imagine Cannabis Co., which would also require provincial approval, would see a non-medical cannabis shop in a vacant retail space at the Ladner Centre Mall at 5150 Ladner Trunk Road. The operation would include a 608-squarefoot retail storefront and 285-square-feet for office and storage. It is proposed to be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The owner is also proposing to undertake some site improvements to comply with recommendations from Delta Police. A Delta staff report notes that when the application was originally submitted, the city received 54 responses to a request for feedback. Some were in support, while others expressed concerns including the proposed store’s operating hours and close proximity to the Dairy Queen restaurant at the shopping centre. Forty people voiced opposition with the majority of those concerned about youth as well as cannabis use being normalized. In response to commu-

The majority of public respondents expressed opposition to the Ladner application. nity feedback, Imagine Cannabis Co. worked with the owner of the shopping centre to secure another unit further away from the Dairy Queen. The new unit, formerly occupied by Booster Juice, became available and Imagine Cannabis Co. subsequently amended their application for that space. A public notification letter for the amended application was sent to more than 3,100 recipients earlier this year and, to date, the city has

received 34 responses. The majority of those responses were in opposition, most repeat respondents reiterating their opposition. The report also notes staff reviewed the location and compared it to the location criteria of other local governments. The proposed location generally meets or exceeds the average requirements of other local governments with respect to proximity to schools, the report notes, adding staff circulated

the application to the Delta School District who responded that the location was a “fairly large distance” from the nearest school. Council on Monday also approved sending two other cannabis dispensary applications, one on River Road and another on Scott Road, to a public hearing. While a date hasn’t been announced for the public hearing, the next hearing date on Delta’s calendar is scheduled for May 31.

Council also recently held a public hearing for two other cannabis dispensaries in Tsawwassen and both of those applications received third reading, but still require provincial approval before coming back to council for final approval. In total, Delta would have nine cannabis dispensaries if all the current applications are successful and combined with those already approved. The city currently has a moratorium on accepting any new applications.

Tsawwassen dancers fall short in CGT finale GRVMNT gave an electric performance Tuesday night on Canada’s Got Talent IAN JACQUES

ijacques@delta-optimist.com

They left it all out on the stage, but in the end, it wasn’t enough to be crowned champion of Canada’s Got Talent. Tsawwassen dancers Emily and Eric Sun, part of Vancouver dance group GRVMNT, stepped up their A-game with an electric performance on Tuesday’s night’s grand finale of Canada’s Got Talent, but their efforts fell short as Canada did not vote the group into the final three. The winner was singer Jeanick Fournier from Chicoutimi, Que. “A huge thank you to everyone for all the support we have received on our Canada’s Got Talent journey,” said Emily in an email to the Optimist Wednesday morning. “Even though the results

were not what we would have wanted, we are so honored to have been able to be on the Got Talent stage in front of the amazing judges. We are proud to have represented the West Coast, Vancouver, and even Delta across Canada and again are so unbelievably grateful for all the love from everyone! Thank you.” As they have throughout the show, GRVMNT brought forth a performance that was full of tight formations, amazing choreography and showmanship. “I have such good taste,” said judge Lilly Singh in reference to her awarding GRVMNT with her golden buzzer, which launched the team from their opening audition straight to the semi-finals. “You are the most consistent act on this show. Every time you

Judge Kardinal Offishall said the group killed it the whole season, while judge Trish Status said she was

inspired and in awe of their performance. Canada’s Got Talent aired on Citytv. The show has been picked up for a

second season. Its counterpart, America’s Got Talent, starts season 17 on May 31.

Delta releases council remuneration, expense report The salary of Delta’s mayor and council, as well as employees earning more than $75,000, was recently made public in a report on Delta’s 2021 Statement of Financial Information. A requirement under the Community Charter, the report includes not only the total amount of remuneration paid to council members for the discharge of their duties of office, but also any amount. The report outlines council remuneration and expenses for the year ending Dec. 31, 2021. Mayor George Harvie received $154,264.12 in council remuneration and $16,728 in car allowance, for a total remuneration of $170,992.12. He also received $1,026 in benefits and $875.27 for expenses. Harvie earned considerably more in total remuneration as city manager in 2017 at $316,318, not including expenses. He ran for mayor and won in 2018. The latest financial report notes councillors Lois Jackson, Alicia Guichon and Jeannie Kanakos all received $66,644.53 in council remuneration, while Bruce McDonald, Dan Copeland and Dylan Kruger received $65,359. All the councillors also got $10,368 in car allowance and $441 in benefits. As far as expenses, they ranged from a low of $95 by Jackson to a high of $743 by McDonald. Going back a decade to the 2011 fiscal year, when Jackson was mayor, the mayor’s pay stood at $103,032, while her car allowance was $14,328. Meantime, most councillors in 2011 made just over $45,700 in council remuneration and almost $8,000 in a car allowance. The benefits and expenses paid to the mayor and councillors varied widely that year. -Sandor Gyarmati

A pair of incumbent Delta councillors have announced their intentions to seek re-election in this October’s municipal election. Dylan Kruger and Alicia Guichon will be running once again with Mayor George Harvie’s Achieving for Delta team. “As an expectant father, now more than ever I feel like it is important to have the voices of young families represented at the council table,” said Kruger. “I am excited to continue to work with Mayor Harvie and our team to build a safe and inclusive community for my daughter to grow up in.”

Guichon said it has been an honour to serve on council the last four years. “I care deeply about our community. As a mother, a farmer and a small business owner, I want to continue to work with our Achieving for Delta team to make Delta the best it can be,” said Guichon. Elected in 2018, Kruger and Guichon are the youngest members of Delta council. “I am running with the Achieving for Delta team because I believe in Mayor Harvie’s vision for our community,” added Guichon. “George’s depth of experience makes him well suited for the role of mayor. He knows how to get things

done and deliver on his promises.” Kruger says Delta has been lucky to have Harvie leading the city over the last few years during the most uncertain financial period in the city’s history. “I also have tremendous respect and appreciation for the way that George has come alongside and mentored the younger members of council,” added Kruger. Harvie, who announced his re-election bid last October, is holding an election announcement on Tuesday, May 24 at Tsawwassen Springs where it is expected he will announce his full slate of candidates for council and Delta school board.

Funding will help shore up Fraser River habitat efforts IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Thanks to one of the largest investments ever in salmon habitat restoration in the Fraser River Estuary, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) can continue its habitat conservation efforts. Late last month the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced more than $5 million in funding for three major conservation projects in the Fraser River Estuary to restore salmon habitat. The projects will receive funding through the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, a contribution program funded jointly by the federal and provincial government to support B.C.’s fish and seafood sector, and to ensure the sustainability of wild Pacific salmon. The Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement project, the Alaskan

National Wildlife Area Tidal Marsh Restoration project, and the North Arm Jetty Breaches will restore Fraser River Estuary tidal marsh habitat for Chinook, coho, steelhead, and sockeye salmon populations. The work will also benefit other species and populations, along with white sturgeon, and other wild B.C. fish stocks. DUC will partner with Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Tsawwassen First Nation and the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance to deliver the projects over the next two years. Sarah Nathan, manager of provincial operations for DUC in B.C., says that collaboration will be key for delivering these large, complex projects. “Our work is partnership-driven and these projects will be further examples of how conservation can occur with effective collaboration and innovation,” says Nathan.

A $2.5 million funding allocation has been announced for a project that will improve fish passage at three sites in the lower Fraser floodplain. Resilient Waters, a project of MakeWay Charitable Society, in partnership with Watershed Watch Salmon Society, is a collaborative effort relying on support and guidance from many lower Fraser First Nations and municipalities, as well as academics, NGOs,

and other levels of government. “This funding will improve access to 40 hectares of crucial salmon habitat currently blocked by flood control structures, making life a little easier for these wild Fraser River salmon,” says Resilient Waters Project Manager Dan Straker. “Resilient Waters is leading the way by showcasing how we can keep our communities and farmland safe from flooding and give our salmon a boost at the same time.” One of the sites slated for improvement is Tilbury Slough in Delta.

“The City of Delta is supportive of this partnership to improve waterways in our community,” added Coun. Dylan Kruger, who toured the site and had an opportunity to participate in field work. “It’s integral we continue to work with experts like the Resilient Waters team and Watershed Watch to ensure municipal infrastructure does not harm local fish populations.” Fish-friendly solutions exist for flood management but, as yet, are not required when upgrading aging infrastructure, added Watershed Watch.

Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) are also partners in this work. “Salmon are our relatives - bringing them back to these historic sloughs is one small but meaningful step towards restoring a really important piece of our culture, and our connection to the land and waters we’ve called home since time immemorial,” said a statement from the TFN. Funding will be provided by the BC Salmon Restoration Innovation Fund, a joint fund from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Province of B.C.

T

IAN JACQUES

he provincial government is in serious need of a reality check. I have to scratch my head these days listening to B.C. Premier John Horgan. Last week, the NDP announced the $780 million Royal BC Museum project - a project that won’t be open to the public for seven years. All this while a few days later, over the weekend, B.C. had the highest gas prices in the country. Asked by reporters what residents should do about the high gas prices Horgan offered up this little gem, “We will have measures to help people reduce costs, but right now I encourage people to think before you hop in the car. Do you need to make that trip? Can you do it with a neighbour or someone going by.” And to compound matters even further, we have another online story today talking about the growing doctor shortage crisis in our province. More than one million people do not have a family doctor. I wonder how these people feel about Horgan’s museum vanity project or the complete lack of sense when it comes to helping out residents put a few dollars back in their pockets when they fill up at the pumps? This is also the same Premier, who last year, suggested that then Liberal leader Shirley Bond should take a geography lesson when there was not going to be a COVID vaccination clinic in North Delta, and that residents should head out to Surrey, which is very close to North Delta. Days later, thanks to pressure on the government, a clinic was established. This government could care less about the plight of average, every day citizens. They don’t care that gas prices are through the roof or that you can’t find a doctor. They called a snap election during the pandemic and received their majority government and now can rule without consequences. They are out of touch with reality.

Doggie boom has left a stinky mess

T

he pandemic has created some serious issues for our fourlegged friends. It’s a heartbreaking mess, and not just the poop kind. Now that most people have returned to school or the office surrendering or abandoning pets is on the rise. Often it’s because of finances, a new job, or relocating. For those who continue to embrace dog ownership they have plenty of company. I’m witnessing the doggie population boom in my own neighbourhood. Over the weekend, after yet another wet morning, the rain stopped and dog owners stepped out in droves. Big ones, little ones, from puppies to seniors, they were all sniffing and pooping. Not everyone is pleased to see the population of man’s best friend explode. As a dog owner who is besotted with my 10-year-old lab, dare I say it, there are some very irresponsible owners who don’t pick up after their dogs and don’t leash

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

them. Nothing is more irritating than dog feces left on public places, or having an unknown dog lunge at your dog. This may also be the most discussed topic on our local social media sites. The city of Tel Aviv has come up with a unique way to catch bad dog owners. In order to renew your dog licence you have to submit your dogs’ DNA. Abandoned dog poop will be tested, DNA matched and the perpetrators tracked down and fined. Presumably this is a deterrent, as I can’t imagine it

being cost effective. Beach Grove dog lovers may soon lose their beloved off-leash dog park due to irresponsible dog owners not picking up after their dogs and letting them run on adjacent school property. For parents at the school this is a win, but for dog owners it is heartbreaking because the park has become a place to socialize for all. Lack of safe confined spaces for dogs are at a minimum in Delta and increasingly there are less places to let our dogs run free. Ladner has only two dog parks, one of which is the North 40 reserve, now somewhat notorious for aggressive dogs. Dog owners need to do better to respect others. Pets are good for our mental and physical health and help with loneliness, so please leash your dog and pick up after them. And if you see bad behaviour call it out. Don’t let a few bad owners spoil the bunch. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writer whose dog Rosie has helped her meet some very cool people.

Unsupervised children causing damage in Beach Grove Park

Editor: On a recent Monday I was just walking in Beach Grove Park at approximately 3:40 p.m. when I was alerted both visually and by screaming to a group of approximately 10 unsupervised children, estimated age 9 to 11 years, who were carrying and waving pieces of old tree limbs. They were hitting these limbs against trees and bushes. One boy was pounding on one of the pages of the current Story Walk. I asked him to stop banging the page as it

would damage it. He did stop. The Story Walk is enjoyed by children and adults alike. It is just as important that children as well as dogs be supervised in this park, by school staff during school hours, and by parents in other times. I suggest that it is timely that Beach Grove Elementary remind students and their parents that trees in a park are protected. They are not playing in a forest! As well they obviously need a reminder not to do damage to the Story Walk.

This is a heavily treed park and is continually receiving new trees. Some new trees were planted there just last week by Delta staff. I did not see the children hitting newly planted trees but they were hitting older trees and shrubs which also need to be maintained. I also suggest that the school needs to complete the fencing of its grounds for safety of children who are often in the treed park out of sight of staff during breaks in school hours. Frances Dickson

Ukraine relief effort needs your support Editor: Thank you for your recent article on Jeff Burko’s outstanding volunteer work in Ukraine. I was blown away when I read the story and so reached out to him. Long story short Jeff has done two medical supply trips into Ukraine from the UK and is attempting to provide medical workers in the country with three ambulances so they can move about in a more safe fashion. Medics are

dying in unprotected vehicles while transporting injured. He indicated he may have his first ambulance in sight. There is a gofundme page to support Jeff that you can contribute to or you can do as I did and send an email money transfer to him (Ukraine@peakemergencytraining.com). Jeff has a business here in Tsawwassen, a wife and a family. This is a grassroots support effort, not a corporate or big

agency effort. This is one man and his family making an effort with support from other volunteers. He has been away for more than seven weeks helping the folks in Ukraine. These ambulances are important for obvious reasons. He is a guy just like all the rest of us, except he got off the couch, so If you want, send him some money to support his efforts. Bruce Gillanders

Editor: So let me get this straight. I go to the grocery store and buy a kilogram of sliced ham wrapped in plastic, a loaf of bread in a plastic bag, a large plastic jug of milk, a pack of napkins wrapped in plastic, a Greek salad in a plastic container, a

plastic bottle of mustard and a plastic bottle of ketchup, and they won’t give me a plastic bag to carry it home because the plastic bag is bad for the environment? I’m old enough to remember that the reason we moved from paper bags to plastic bags

in the first place was to save the trees! This has as much common sense as banning plastic drinking straws to save the world. I firmly believe that the biggest threat to life on this planet is way too much government. Greg Hoover

Editor: Re: A misguided concept letter (Optimist, May 12) This letter is in defence of the Bridge Street popup park. I really enjoyed it. It added a pop of colour

and cheeriness to an otherwise drab streetscape and people seemed to really enjoy using it. As for the negative impact on local businesses I disagree. I often ordered take out from an adjoining restaurant

and sat in the pop up park to enjoy it. I suspect I was not the only one. If behaviour is an issue in the evening, perhaps the Delta Police could do a regular drive by and deal with it. Jane McCall

Local representation in Delta is at risk Editor: The federal Electoral Boundaries Commission has released a draft map of their proposed redistributed federal ridings. Clearly, whoever drew these riding maps has never visited Delta. Currently, our entire city is represented by one Member of Parliament. Under the new proposal, Delta would be carved up into three ridings, and split between Richmond and Surrey. Ladner north of Highway 99, Tilbury, Annacis Island, and North Delta west of 112th and north of 72nd would be lumped in with Richmond East. Ladner, Tsawwassen, and North Delta south of 72nd would be lumped in with Surrey all the way to King George Boulevard. The remaining part of North

Delta east of 112th would make up a new “Surrey West” riding. Where to begin? In two out of the three new proposed ridings, Delta voices would be in the minority. This means residents in Richmond and Surrey would effectively decide who represents us here in Delta. According to the Commission, there should be roughly 116,000 people in each federal riding. Luckily, Delta’s population hovers just above 110,000. Why would the Commission recommend cutting our community into slices and creating unnatural and illogical boundaries with other communities? A fundamental tenant of our democratic system here in Canada is the right to local representation. A local MP under-

stands Delta issues and is better prepared to fight for the solutions we care about. These proposed changes would weaken Delta’s position in the Canadian federation, add significant confusion to voters, and delegate decision-making power to our neighbours. It’s not too late to stop these changes. The Commission will be holding a public meeting on June 9 at the Tsawwassen Coast Inn. I have signed up to speak. I am also working with Mayor Harvie on a council motion in opposition to the proposed changes. Democracy is precious and riding boundaries matter. Let’s work together to stop these changes and keep our city united Dylan Kruger

Editor: To paraphrase an old saying “What is a Camel? Answer - A Horse designed by a commission.” Three commissioners, members of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for BC are proposing to create that camel, which was supposed to be a horse, by carving up the Federal Riding of Delta for the proposed 2022 new federal election map for British Columbia. How familiar are these commissioners with the City of Delta that currently has one federal MP representing all of Delta and its constituents? Judging by their ridiculous proposal to carve up Delta and combine it

with two different areas in Surrey and one in Richmond, they have not a clue. And from what the commission chair stated in the recent Optimist article they didn’t even consider the City of Delta and its boundaries. According to the commission chairperson we are supposed to understand that the process is “not just about local ridings but a much bigger picture.” If the bigger picture means abandoning all logic then the picture needs to be re-drawn. Just one example demonstrates the stupidity of their proposed disintegration of the federal riding of Delta. Ladner is part farming community, part fishing community, part port

community. It is a contiguous whole and has been a community for over 100 years. But this ill-conceived proposal distributes parts of the Ladner community to a part of Richmond with which it has nothing in common. Other parts of Ladner remain in the Delta riding whilst parts of North Delta are divided, some going to a part of Richmond and the remainder to a part of Surrey. And finally a part of Surrey is allocated to the rump of the Delta riding, again with them having nothing in common. Can you see any logic in this? I will be at the public meeting to oppose this. I hope other Delta residents will join me. Roger Emsley

Childcare Month in B.C. An opportunity to fight for the public system communities and families need May is Childcare Month and CUPE BC is celebrating the incredible contribution childcare workers make in our communities. In the coming days, CUPE members who provide high quality childcare throughout the province, will be profiled on social media as a way to recognize the incredible work of members in this sector. Childcare is one of the many services delivered by CUPE members that communities rely on. High quality childcare ensures kids get a strong foundation for their learning and social development, and produces positive outcomes to families. Access to childcare has a proven positive effect on women accessing the workforce, which leads to a more just and equitable society. Simply celebrating childcare, and those who work in the existing fractured and mostly private system, is not enough. More childcare spaces are needed in communities across the province, and workers in the sector need fair wages, access to benefits and a pension, and better job security. That is why CUPE BC launched its campaign for a public universal system of childcare in British Columbia

The City of Delta could soon be reviewing its Community Amenity Contribution policy for developments to consider including childcare as a public benefit. That’s just one of several actions identified by staff that could be implemented within the next couple of years as the city looks to increase the number of childcare spaces. The city over the past two years used provincial funding to complete a childcare needs assessment and subsequently developed a childcare strategy, which was endorsed by council last summer. The action plan identifies key stakeholders

and recommends strategies to help reach a suggested target of 1,051 new childcare spaces in Delta over the next 10 years. That works out to just over 100 new spaces per year. A recent staff report notes that in 2021, six new childcare facilities opened in Delta, adding 146 new spaces. The city has been working with community partners, guided by the Delta Child and Youth Committee Child Care Task Force, on implementing actions identified in the childcare strategy. A workshop was also held with stakeholders earlier this year to provide an overview of upcoming changes in B.C.’s childcare policy,

discuss how they affect Delta and identify and prioritize short-term actions. Meanwhile, some actions that were identified by staff for the short-to-medium term include identifying opportunities to streamline the approvals process and remove barriers to child facilities, where safety is not compromised. Another involves Delta’s community amenity policy for developers. The City of Delta now has a Parks, Recreation and Culture Amenity Contributions policy for new developments to contribute to the cost of new amenities to support community growth, but that could be expanded for childcare.

Delta Coun. Jeannie Kanakos is in Paris, France to find out more about what makes communities more livable. She is a moderator at the five-day Making Cities Livable Conference which wraps up on Sunday (May 22). It’s part of an international conference series hosted by the Lennard Institute for Livable Cities. The Paris region is the the case study this year. “It’s being held in a suburb of Paris where they have done an extensive repurposing of a bedroom community/ suburban community to become a more livable community,” said Kanakos, prior to her depature. “They’ve been doing things near and dear to our hearts with things like more bike lanes and making a 15-minute city that’s close to everything. It will focus on best practices for communities and cities.” Noting she has been involved in past conferences, Kanakos said she received an invitation to attend this year’s event, a peer-to-peer gathering of civic leaders, professionals and scholars. The theme for the conference is “Architecture and the Edges of Public Space: Tools and Strategies for a New Urban Agenda.” Those attending are discussing what the role is of architecture in supporting more active, more connective, more

Coun. Jeannie Kanakos is attending a Paris conference on livable cities this week. Each conference is aimed at focusing on a host city ‘offering important and timely lessons in livable and sustainable urban development.’ beautiful public spaces, promoting human and planetary health, wellbeing and livability. The International Making Cities Livable (IMCL) conference series started in 1985 and has become a premier international gathering and resource platform for more livable, humane and ecological cities and towns, according to its website. “Each IMCL gathering has focused on a host city offering important and timely lessons in livable and sustainable urban development. Past hosts have included Freiburg, Germany; Charleston, USA; Bristol, UK; Venice, Italy; Portland (OR) USA; and Carmel, Indiana, USA. Importantly, the IMCL conferences cover not just big cities but also small towns and suburbs, since such a large percentage of the world’s inhabitants live in these areas, and many of the world’s social, economic

and environmental challenges occur there too.” The organization also notes the conferences brought “new attention to the importance of making cities livable for all including children and the elderly, the need for public transit, bicycle lanes, and traffic calmed streets, for human scale architecture and mixed use urban fabric, for reviving city centers and creating public places where people could gather for farmers markets, festivals, outdoor cafes and community social life.” Delta council recently endorsed the invitation for Kanakos to attend the conference on the city’s behalf, agreeing to the expenditure, which is just under $4,000. Kanakos, who will provide a report to council following the event, said she will also be talking about Delta initiatives including the cycling master plan and housing strategy.

Narrow Delta road to undergo repairs

More repairs and improvements are coming for a narrow, cracked Ladner roadway. The 41B Street Roadway Rehabilitation Project, part of Delta’s Rural Road Improvements Program, will see more upgrades such as paving and road strengthening.

Council recently awarded an $838,888 construction contract for the second phase of the project, which will begin at the south end of the project’s first phase, approximately 900 meters south of River Road West. It will continue approximately 700 meters south

and involves removal of the existing rural roadway as well as the placement of a geogrid system to enhance the road strength. Last year, council approved a $929,600 construction contract for the first phase, which started at River Road West. -Sandor Gyarmati

Trees to be thinned in Burns Bog, Watershed Park SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The cost of reducing the risk of wildfire in Burns Bog turned out to be more than the City of Delta expected. Staff recently gave council a report on the city’s extreme weather response in Delta, providing updates on various initiatives including a plan approved last summer to undertake measures to reduce the risk of wildfires in the bog. The plan involves the thinning out of trees. It was part of Delta’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan aimed at addressing risks associated with wildland-urban interface areas across the municipality. That plan contains elements of community wildfire protection including communication and education, structure protection, training, emergency

response and vegetation management. One of the priorities was to develop a fuel management plan to help prevent wildfires and, with grant funding received from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM), a plan to reduce vegetation fuel that could feed fires was completed. It identified eight “priority parcels” in Burns Bog and North Delta’s Watershed Park. The recent report notes, “The management of fuel (vegetation) is a key element to reducing the risks of wildfires; however, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach and each site must be assessed and treated differently. For example, fuel management in Watershed Park is done strategically to minimize disruption to the natural ecosystem and retain the beauty of the forest, while at the same time, creating

an environment in which wildfires would be more manageable and easier to put out.” The first works that were carried out at the bog last fall included fuel management at the city’s radio communications tower around 72 Street. However, the estimate received to complete the work is over $280,000, greatly exceeding UBCM grant funding of $50,000. The higher than expected costs are due to extremely challenging conditions at the site, the report notes, adding staff are working to reduce the scope of work and seeking assistance from BC Wildfire Service staff. Meanwhile, Delta earlier this year received a grant of $50,000 from the UBCM FireSmart Community Fund to undertake fuel management work in Watershed Park. A request for proposals will be issued soon and that work is

they can take to reduce fire hazards around their homes and properties, including grant information to encourage private landowners to potentially take advantage of provincial funding.

BC legislation aiming to curb wildlife rodenticide poisoning SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s good news for wildlife in Delta. Last week, the province called for public feedback on proposed regulatory changes that will ban the widespread sale and use of secondgeneration rodenticides. Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are more powerful than the previous generation of rodenticides and increase the risk of secondary poisoning of other animals who consume poisoned rodents. In July 2021, the province introduced an 18-month ban on the sale and use of SGARs while government reviewed the science and developed recommendations for a policy. The result is an intentions paper that outlined proposed permanent changes to the Integrated Pest Management Regulation. According to East Ladner-based Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL), rodenti-

cides may not have been intended for raptors and other predators, but it is not selective in what it kills. Despite what many people are told, and what is written on labels, no poison is safe to use, OWL warned. “When rodents eat the poison bait, death can take several days and before they die, they are free to roam. During this time they become weakened from internal bleeding, which makes them easier prey for predators and in turn poisons them. Many studies have been done and show that a wide variety of species contain traces of rodenticides, not just hawks and owls. Foxes, bobcats, cougars, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, and even pet cats and dogs can contain traces,” the bird of prey rescue organization explained on its website. “Rats who have eaten poisoned bait do not stay within the bait boxes and die. They can end up dying in the walls of your house, your attic, or become a meal for a

predator or scavenger, which in turn can poison them.” Pesticide use in Delta and elsewhere is regulated by federal, provincial, and municipal governments. The provincial Ministry of Environment and Climate Change regulates pesticide users and vendors under the Integrated Pest Management Act. Delta council had previously agreed it wouldn’t introduce a city bylaw prohibiting rat poison for private commercial or residential use. A staff report explained local governments only had the authority to restrict pesticide use for cosmetic landscaping purposes on residential or municipal lands. Since rodents are considered structural and not cosmetic pests, local governments could not enact pesticide bylaws that ban the use of any formulation of rodenticide. The report also explained that local governments cannot enact bylaws that restrict pesticide use “for the management of pests that transmit human diseases or impact agriculture or forestry, on the residential areas of farms, to buildings or inside buildings, or on land used for agriculture, forestry, transportation, public utilities or pipelines

SUBMITTED PHOTO

OWL warns that poisons disrupt the natural way of the food chain. When predators in an area are killed, rodents are then free to breed unchecked and their population can grow out of control. unless the public utility or pipeline is vested in the municipality.” In 2019, city council received a petition from a group of residents calling on Delta to seek an alternative way to deal with the rodent population, saying pesticides are too destructive to other animals. The city then switched to using alternative methods of outdoor rodent control at several civic facilities as part of an ongoing trial. Delta’s indoor rodent control is accomplished

exclusively through mechanical trapping. In a news release last week, the province noted the proposed changes would reduce unnecessary pesticide use by requiring individuals and businesses to focus on other methods of pest control, such as traps, less toxic rodenticide alternatives and removing food sources. SGARs will be restricted for use by essential services such as hospitals, food production and supply, transportation or conservation projects, as well as select industrial operators only. They will be restricted at the point of sale for all other users and require integrated pest manage-

ment and record keeping. As proposed in the intentions paper, the regulatory changes are expected to come into effect on Jan. 20, 2023. The province also notes that will align with the end of the temporary ban. However, if needed, the existing ban can be extended while the amendments are finalized. Comments about the proposed changes are welcome until midnight on June 19, 2022. Reserves off the table for Delta school board School district had to make cuts to make up for the biggest deficit it faced in recent years. SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta school trustees on Tuesday (May 10) voted to approve the latest operating budget which contains tough cuts, while agreeing the right thing to do is not dip into millions in total projected reserves. Facing a projected $2.74 million operating shortfall for next year, the school district put forward a budget that contains a series of reductions including staffing, with the most prominent being full-time equivalents in the Inclusive Learning department. Those staff cuts will be spread across all schools in the district. An anticipated drop of 293 full-time enrolled students for the 2022/23 school year, increased costs as well as special funding being eliminated, combined with the province not increasing per-pupil funding and revenue falling from the once lucrative International Student Program were all factors in the budget process. Trustees during their online meeting Tuesday lamented the province’s lack of a funding increase, saying it is students who will be impacted by the decision. “With better fund-

ing, the Delta School District has been able to accelerate growth and innovation,” said Trustee Laura Dixon. “This year’s funding announcement does not afford us those same opportunities. At a time when we are doing our best to recover from the challenges of the past two years, I’m disappointed that the funding has stalled. Nothing costs the same this year as it did last year…I believe this provincial government shares the priorities in our Vision 2030 document and our strategic plan, but what I’m saying to Victoria is stand-still funding does not get us there.” Board chair Val Windsor also described the province’s lack of funding as very disappointing, especially during these times, while trustee Bruce Reid said the district was left with very little wiggle room. The situation the Delta Board of Education faces is in sharp contrast to the education ministry’s statement earlier this year that increased funding for schools to support enrolment growth is part of the province’s commitment to provide the best possible educational experience for students. The district last year and in previous years balanced the books in

Delta Police issue warning about international extortion scam Earlier this month, a victim contacted Delta Police to report being defrauded more than $200,000. While police say this is the first reported case in Delta using this technique, it has been reported widely throughout the country. According to police, in this scam, people claim to be from Chinese authorities. This has included, but not limited to, pretending to be from the Chinese embassy, consulate, Interpol, courier service, police or cell phone company. The scammers contact the victim mainly using web-based applications like Skype or WhatsApp, alleging that the victim has been implicated in the commission of a criminal offence in China, and that there is an agreement between Chinese and Canadian officials to arrest and deport the victim to China. Part of new reporting requirements, Secretary Treasurer Nicola Christ went into a detailed explanation of the district’s 2022/23 estimated

accumulated operating surplus, saying they are needed to mitigate financial risk if there are unusual or unanticipated expenses.

A report on the budget and the district’s reserve situation will be made public on the district’s website by the end of the current school year.

There are a lot more happy children and families thanks to the generosity of South Delta. More than $15,000 was raised on Wednesday by patrons of McDonald’s restaurants in Ladner and Tsawwassen at McHappy Day. McHappy Day returned with in-person festivities after the past few years were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord, and Deputy Chief Michelle Davey were joined by other officers at both restaurants as well as Delta firefighters selling McHappy Day socks at the drive-thru’s to support children at Reach Child and Youth Development Society

and Ronald McDonald house. Irish dancers, the Delta Secondary theatre company and dancers from Studio West performed outside in the afternoon and crafts, tattoos and prize wheel fun was available to children throughout the day. Reach Society volunteers manned these activities under tents supplied by the TOOB in case of rain, but the weather held. A percentage of all food sales on McHappy Day at South Delta McDonald’s restaurants will be donated to Reach Society. Reach Society is grateful to local McDonald’s owner/ operator Steve Krawchuk, his staff, patrons and all volunteers who came out and made McHappy Day such a success.

There will be even more changes to make it easier for Delta residents to cast a ballot in the upcoming municipal election. To be held across B.C. on Oct. 15, 2022, the elections for school board and city council will have new rules aimed at giving additional, more convenient options. City council recently endorsed several staff recommendations including mail-in ballot voting eligibility being expanded to all electors in Delta. Those living at the

Tsawwassen First Nation will have a voting station at the First Nation where they can cast a ballot for the Delta School Board. This year, provincial mandated advanced voting will be held on Oct. 5 and 6, while a third advance voting opportunity has been scheduled by the City of Delta for Saturday, Oct. 1. Further changes now include Delta offering two locations in North Delta and two in South Delta for advanced voting. Previously, advance voting took place only at city hall. The municipality will offer advanced voting at Delta City Hall, South

Delta Recreation Centre, North Delta Centre for the Arts and at Pinewood Elementary. Advance voting takes place 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also, in addition to the provincial government changing legislation to permit local governments to allow mail ballot voting for all residents, the rules have also changed by removing the requirement to be a resident of the community for 30 days in order to vote. For more information about voting in the upcoming municipal election, check https:// www.delta.ca/city-hall/ municipal-information/ elections.

South Delta comes together for MLA’s beach clean-up

After two cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, community members and youth from South Delta gathered for Liberal MLA Ian Paton’s annual beach cleanup along the shoreline of Boundary Bay on Saturday, May 14. “I was so thrilled to see everyone who came out for my office’s beach clean-up on Saturday,” said Paton. “It is the best of both worlds when people of all ages can come together to do something great for both our community and environment. We always find several items that are truly unique, and this year was no different.” Some of the items found included a boat, tires, Styrofoam, a ladder, and a mini refrigerator.

“My sincere appreciation and thanks go out to every volunteer who put in several hours removing these items and cleaning our shoreline,” he added. In addition to many local community members and youth, B.C. Liberal leader Kevin Falcon, members of Delta Firefighters IAFF Local 1763, and Delta’s division of Girl Guides of Canada were also in attendance. The Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards (TOOB) provided an appreciation barbecue lunch at the conclusion of the event. The beach clean-up is an annual event organized by the Delta South Constituency Office and will return in the spring of 2023. -submitted

Christianity is about love

T

he book of 1 John, is packed with so much truth and conviction. The writer John was one of the closest eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus and has lived the remainder of his life spreading the gospel. He writes his letters, to the new Christians in the Roman Empire, with the main focus being on love. The kind of love that Jesus has for us is the same love we are to show to one another. John seems to recall this in his old age and as he sees what’s going on with early Christians, it’s time for them to get a reminder of this basic yet critical command. John displays two aspects of love that are essential for Christians — we need to love God and we need to love others!

Minister’s Minute ANDREAS BASSON

LIFE CHURCH

In 1 John 2:5 it says, “But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them.” If we obey God’s word that is how we show that we love him. John concludes his letter by reaffirming this position. 1 John 5:3 “In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” John weaves

the thoughts of loving God and loving others so masterfully in his letter. He says if we don’t love our brothers and sisters we are “still in darkness” (1 John 2:9). However, if we do love our brothers and sisters then we “live in the light” (1 John 2:10). 1 John 4:20 he says, “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” The bottom line is this if you can’t show love to others on earth, how can you possibly love God or even know Him? The message in John’s letter is as clear now as it was then. We as Christfollowers should love extravagantly. Let us be recognized as followers of Christ for the way we love God and love others.

BC & Alberta Guide Dogs has established a $10,000 endowment with the Delta Community Foundation, represented by Foundation past president Peter Roaf (second from left), and presented by BCAGD CEO Bill Thornton (third from left) and, trainers, Joel van Stavely and Shay, Rachel Nelson and Blythe, Sarah Enright and Bennet, and Matilda Halliburton and Jovi.

Endowment fund to benefit Guide Dogs

To generate interest on its principal to apply to a range of expenses in meeting the growing demand for professionally trained Guide Dogs and Autism Support Dogs and OSI/PTSD Service Dogs, Delta-based BC and Alberta Guide Dogs has established a $10,000 endowment fund through the Delta Community Foundation. BC and Alberta Guide Dogs is a non-profit charitable society, based in Ladner, which breeds, raises and professionally trains Guide Dogs for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, Autism Support Dogs, for children ages three to 10 and their families, and Service Dogs for veterans, first responders and RCMP members suffering from Operational Stress Injury or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, all at no cost to the client. Each fully trained guide dog or service dog enables each client to live a fulfilling and productive life. “We have been enormously blessed through the generosity of others,” said BC and Alberta Guide Dogs CEO Bill Thornton. “Supporting Delta Community Foundation is

just another way BC and Alberta Guide Dogs can give back.” Members of the public may make donations to the capital of the Fund, which will be retained in perpetuity on the same basis as the initial cash infusion of $10,000. The Foundation will issue tax receipts to donors based on the principal amount they donate to the endowment fund. “We respect the vital work of BC and Alberta Guide Dogs and the confidence it has placed in the Delta Community Foundation,” adds Foundation president Gail Martin. “We will apply the many years of knowledge and experience in the investment industry, as represented by some of our board directors, to ensuring the endowment fund is effectively administered and grows over time to serve the needs of the society through interest generated from the fund long into the future.” As the local community foundation for Delta, in a network of 191 community foundations across Canada, Delta Community Foundation is the local “charity for charities.”

Joining other artists at this beautiful venue offers a broader audience for my art which really appeals to me.” Nay added that the Art Walk allows visitors to engage in a conversation with the artist, to learn about their art process or approach, and to hear the story behind a piece.

Upcycle Auction benefiting Heron Hospice Society Several local artists and community members have transformed old chairs to benefit Heron Hospice Society of Delta. The Upcycle Auction: Repurpose for a Purpose launched online last week. Funds raised will provide supportive care services for individuals or families facing end of life or struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one in our community. Jennifer O’Brien of Sublime Art Materials created a stunning statement piece with an antiqued gold finish and a hand embroidered seat cushion. Stars and constellations of the Northern Sky have been masterfully embroidered in gold thread on navy velvet on this collector’s chair. “In creating a new feel for this chair, I thought of beautiful things: antiques and the night sky,” said O’Brien. “I enjoy laying on my back on a clear, warm night, looking up at the stars and contemplating all that is….and isn’t, and thought this might

also be a nice place to do such a thing. This piece was designed as a statement piece, a star in your home.” Another participant, the Delta Chamber of Commerce, chose a young entrepreneur to transform their chair. “The Delta Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to partner with our member Collaborative Wellness to support the next generation of Delta entrepreneurs,” said Chamber executive director Jill McKnight. “For this community project, we entrusted 13-year-old, Sam Ghent of Dragon Designs Art to share her talents and imagination with our community in the spirit of philanthropy and giving back. With more than 40 hours of artistic time and even glow in the dark touches, Sam has created a work of art and inspired many around her.” The South Delta Artisans group, led by Peter Blair, collaborated to create an eclectic Tete-A-Tete seat, showcasing

many local Delta artists including Care/ Aaron Scaga, Carol Hacklander, Casey Vladichuk, Christina Dosahjh, Dina Jay, Jane Williamson, Kerry Elliott Carone, Rob Brodowich, Sonia MacNair and Valerie Titford. Other unique and creative entries were donated by artists Linda Jones, Gary Nay, Lyn Verra-Lay, Wayne Peace and Myrna Webster, Mayor George Harvie, Ladner Village Arts & Crafts, the Delta Police Department, who included a four-hour ride-along with their entry, while the Tsawwassen First Nation contributed a handmade paddle and blanket to the auction. All pieces are on display at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, next to the Chocolate Bear, until the auction closes on May 26 at 7 p.m. To bid on the chairs and vote on your favourites, visit: heronhospice. org.

Ladner resident Hugh Greer has taken his years of teaching and other facets of his family life in creating an illuminating and entertaining journey through the evolution of education in British Columbia. 11,000 Days at School: From Class Clown to High School Vice Principal spans 53 years of Greer’s life, from his student days attending kindergarten in the 1950’s to his retirement as a high school vice principal in 2009. His memoir recounts Greer’s comical, teachable, tragic and unforgettable experiences as a student in the Burnaby School District and educator in the Vancouver School District of British Columbia. Greer never met his paternal grandfather and by the time he was 14-years-old his remaining three grandparents had passed away. He spent years wishing he had known more about his grandparents, so at age 69 he decided to write a small memoir for his two grandsons. The first “final” draft was 6,000 words. His last final draft was over 92,000 words and is dedicated to his three grandsons. “Typical of many people of Irish heritage, I love to tell stories,” said Greer. “As a classroom teacher I often digressed from the intended learning outcomes of the lesson and enthusiastically told some story hopefully connected in some way to the topic, but admittedly, not always.” He said his first attempt at published

Help is out there say South Delta Caregivers Meetings and upcoming course start May 25 at KinVillage in Tsawwassen There is help out there for caregivers. The South Delta Caregivers’ Network, a volunteer organization that offers education and emotional support, is starting this month at KinVillage in Tsawwassen. Coordinator Laurie Pettman said the course is for anyone who provides unpaid care for an adult friend or family member who’s disabled, chronically ill, frail or elderly. As a caregiver, there is a large emotional component when it involves family members. “People who have

attended the workshops have been looking after somebody for quite a while and they’re totally stressed and worn out emotionally. They don’t really know what to do or where to go for help,” said Pettman. “Often people just fall into it, helping their husband, wife or parent and don’t really think of themselves as a caregiver. When you are prepared and are aware of where to get help it makes the whole experience a lot easier.” The weekly series will cover topics like caregiver stress, communica-

tion techniques, dealing with difficult behaviours, role and lifestyle changes, accessing using community resource, and legal and financial issues. Sylvia Pryke, another coordinator, says the weekly series usually starts off with a support group component where participants can talk about their own situations and their frustrations. “Initially some participants may be tense and don’t want to say too much, however, it has proven that the trust grows as the weeks pass,” added Pryke. “Everything in the group is confiden-

tial, and if the participant does not want to talk that is fine.” The upcoming South Delta Caregivers course starts on Wednesday, May 25 and runs for six Wednesdays at KinVillage from 1 to 3 p.m. In order to attend the course, participants must purchase a KinVillage membership for $30 and also bring $20 to cover the expenses for the classes. For more information contact Pettman at 604-943-3921 or Pryke at 604-943-7596.

ADVICE FROM THE

I collect banknotes from around the world. Do you carry any bills in your store? I also have some duplicates and wonder if you also buy banknotes

The lawyer told me at the close of my new home I owe more than my down payment amount, why is this?

I carry one of the largest selections of world banknotes in Canada.

When you bring your bank draft to the Notary/Lawyer this will include all costs for your new purchase. In addition to the down payment there will be additional closing costs. These closing costs include: The annual property tax adjustment, legal fees and property transfer tax if applicable. Your mortgage professional will be able to provide you with a good idea as to your final closing costs so you are not surprised when it comes time to close on your new home!

We have 30 volumes of notes, from over 100 different counties. Priced from as little as $1.00 to as much as $1,000.00, I would think that we have bills that you would like. We are also extensive buyers of all notes, from the most inexpensive to very expensive.

Jim Richardson, owner

Right now, my best-selling world notes are from Zimbabwe. We have the 10, 20 and 50 Trillion dollar banknotes (yes Trillion is correct) priced at $30.00 each or mix and match 5 for $125.00. This is way below internet pricing, just like many of our banknote prices are.

How can you help in designing an ad that will get the readers’ attention amongst the other ads and the articles in the paper?

Market volatility makes me nervous. What should I do to stop worrying? If you are nervous about your investments, you’re not alone. Here’s my advice: Filter out the media noise. Dramatic news makes good headlines, but in reality volatility is normal and healthy. Successful investing involves using the “ups” and “downs” to your advantage. Ensure your portfolio is well structured. Your financial advisor should customize an investment portfolio unique to Doug Smith your circumstances, carefully considering your specific BA I CIM® needs for wealth protection, tax efficient income and Financial Advisor comfort with risk. Benefit from a knowledgeable and experienced financial advisor. If you have doubts, consider getting a second opinion. Here are the five most important points in creating a good ad: 1. Lead with a strong headline. It should be interesting and try not to be too cliché. Is not everyone tired of all the “Best Kept Secrets” that are in every marketplace today? 2. Use a graphic element that ties into the product(s) being sold and that will attract attention. 3. Make sure your ad copy describes at least one benefit for the potential customer. Why should they buy that product now and/or why should they buy it at all? 4. There must be a call to action. Create a sense of urgency so the reader has a reason to act on the information in the ad. 5. Tell them who you are and where you are. Design a strong logo and use a font relevant to the business you are in. Always include your address, website, phone number etc.

I am afraid of the dentist. Will sedation work for me?

Are You Ready to Start Planning that next Cruise Vacation?

You are not alone. Many people have fears around dental appointments, resulting from previous bad experiences or just deep seated irrational fears. Regardless, It is possible to have conscious sedation ensuring that you remember little or nothing about your dental appointment. By taking just one little pill, the dentist can complete all the treatment required in as little as one or two appointments. We have treated many patients who have avoided the dentist for decades due to these fears and they would never have thought they could have a healthy mouth.

When does noise become dangerous to my hearing?

You have a whole shelf full of sunscreen – why so many?

As a rule of thumb, the following situations put you in the danger zone: (1) if you have to shout over background noise to make yourself heard, (2) If the noise hurts your ears or makes them ring, and (3) If you find it difficult to hear for several hours after hearing the noise.

I have lots of different types due to different needs. Look for a sunscreen that has a minimum of SPF 30 or higher. The rating lists the difference in time it takes for your skin to burn in the sun compared with no sun protection. The sunscreen should protect against both ultraviolet B rays that cause skin burning and ultraviolet A rays that penetrate more deeply into the skin and cause premature aging and contribute to the development of skin cancers. The sunscreen needs to be applied at least ½ hour prior to sun exposure and should be applied liberally and reapplied often.

Mark Nickel What damages our hearing is the intensity and BC-HIP, BBA duration of the sound. In our daily lives, normal conversation would be at the 60 dB level, a lawn mower would be at 90 dB, a chain saw at 100 dB, a loud concert would be at 115 dB and a jet engine would be at 140 dB. Many experts believe that continued exposure to more than 85 decibels is asking for trouble. The longer you are exposed to a loud noise and the closer Hearing Instrument Practitioner Phone: 604-943-0033 you are to it, the higher the risk is of 5682 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen damage. www.TsawwassenHearing.com

Sunscreens are just one tool in protecting your skin from the sun; other measures include avoiding direct sun exposure from 11 am to 3 pm, wearing sun protective clothing including wide brim hat and protecting your eyes from the sun using UV blocking sunglasses. Come and see me in the pharmacy with any further questions. “Your Health – Our Priority” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.

I have been wearing dentures for many years and they are to the point that my gums are extremely sore and red: what can I do?

What should I do with all the stuff passed down from deceased relatives?

Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Generally a second and or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before proceeding to the construction of new dentures. New dentures promote a healthy clean fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

Often this is known as passing the burden down. Today’s society has shifted since times of harsh rationing when our elders cherished EVERYTHING they had (I have even seen whole drawers of twist ties). Paralyzed with guilty thoughts of freedom from these affectionately called heirlooms, we store them away, taking up valuable real estate within JENNIFER our homes, inevitably passing on the burden to the ILLSLEY-HALL next generation. Ask your kids now if they want any professional organizer of these items (often they don’t) then pick a few key items of sentiment, honor them in a keepsake box and as for the rest ask yourself if you even like Grannies china?, or Grandpa’s furniture? If you do, then give it new life and put it into circulation to be enjoyed, not stored in a box never to see the light of day. Hiring an organizer can help you www.deliberatedecisions.ca gain clarity around hard decisions while jennifer@deliberatedecisions.ca feeling supported. Call today!

Ultimate a big hit at Delta secondary MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s a combination of basketball, soccer and football that has evolved into a spring season hit with student athletes at Delta Secondary. It was about four years ago when PE teacher Kayla Jow decided to see what the interest would be in launching an Ultimate team at the Ladner school. Back then, the Pacers were participating in a district league with a handful of other schools. Now, they are off to their first-ever provincial tournament after finishing third at last week’s South Fraser Championships thanks to rallying for an 8-7 win over the Richmond Colts. Ultimate is played on a field 40-yards in width and 110-yards in length, including 20-yard end zones. The six-aside co-ed line-ups can only

Delta’s Tyler Jones reaching for the disc. advance the Frisbee by throwing and catching it. Players have a time limit before they have to make a throw and it’s a change of possession if the Frisbee hits the ground. A point is awarded if a catch is made in the end zone. Games are under a

time limit or the winning team reaches 15 points. A unique part of the sport is no officials are involved. Instead, Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. While Jow continues to generate student interest from within the walls of DSS, it’s Dave Jones who now looks after the coaching duties. The parent volunteer also guided the senior boys’ basketball team this past season. Jones has about 10 years of Ultimate experience himself playing in adult leagues. “Everybody gets to be a quarterback (and make throws) so that makes it better than football,”

Delta Pacers’ Lauren Henry and Sophia Lawton defending against Seaquam in a Sur-Del Tier One League game played May 6 at Delta Secondary. chuckled Jones. “You’ve got the basketball, you’ve got the soccer and you’ve got everything in there. You got a mixture of man-to-man and zone defenses too. You throw it all together,

put it out on the field and see what happens. I do have a background in it, but it’s really the kids who take over from there. The Pacers were seeded third for the South

Fraser Championships and secured their B.C. berth with a 6-3 quarterfinal win over No. 6 Steveston-London. The provincials take place next week at Newton Athletic Park.

Comeback bid falls short for Islanders

Delta Islanders opened the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season on Saturday with a 19-16 loss to the visiting Langley Thunder at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Delta travels to Nanaimo Saturday then hosts Victoria on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

It’s a line-up stacked with pro talent and the Ladner Pioneers are not offering any apologies. The Pioneers will play their first West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association home game in two years Thursday night when the North Shore Indians visit the Ladner Leisure Centre at 8 p.m. It will mark the hometown debut of Vancouver Warriors standout Logan Schuss who is passing on playing in the Western Lacrosse Association this summer to help the team his dad once played for win a national senior “B” championship for the first time in 18 years. He’s not the only one. By the time the playoffs roll around in July, the Pioneers will have 10 National Lacrosse League regulars on the floor and will be heavy favourites to win the league title and represent B.C. at the 2022 President’s Cup in Leduc, AB. That’s where the top end talent will be needed in a tournament where the competitive bar continues to rise. “We showed up (at the 2019)

President’s Cup thinking we were good enough to win it and we weren’t,” said Pioneers head coach Ross Frehlick. “We were close but it came down to needing a timely save or goal. But these Ontario teams have a whole bunch of pro guys and so does Alberta. How do you compete with that?” What paved the way for the inflow of elite talent was the Pioneers playing an exhibition series last summer against North Shore when the senior leagues were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It resulted in a number of WLA regulars suiting up for them. Ontario native Ryan Benesch, one of the NLL’s all-time leading scorers, is back for another summer with the Pioneers. Thanks to the efforts of Delta Islander alumni and current Saskatchewan Rush member Mike Mallory, three of his NLL teammates – Matt Beers, Jeff Cornwall and goalie Eric Penny have joined him in Ladner. Another former Islander star, Colorado Mammoth sniper Eli McLaughin, will also be here when the NLL playoffs conclude. Warriors’ defender Owen Barker and the return of Zach Herreweyers (Calgary) are other impact players.

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM

OBITUARIES

READ-FRIEDMANN, Mary (Susan)

STEBBINGS, Mark April 6, 1977 − April 11, 2020

DLUGON, Emily Anne December 19, 1924 − May 5, 2022

After two long years, we’re ready to gather and celebrate Mark Stebbings’ life. The festivities will be held on Saturday, June 25th, at Beach Grove Golf Course from 1pm to 4pm. It will be a casual after− noon of sharing and reliving memories of Mark. Food and drinks will be enjoyed! If you plan to attend, RSVP via email to: mstebsfestivities@gmail.com

Emily Anne Dlugon passed away peacefully on May 5th, 2022, in her 98th year, in Tsawwassen, BC. She was born on December 19th, 1924, to Louis and Carol in Mundare, Alberta. Emily relocated to BC in her twenties, where she lived in Vancouver, Richmond and Delta. She raised three daughters, Judy (Harold), Wendy (Don) and Terrie (Ron), and loved and adored her grandsons Trev and Jeff (Aliez) and great−grandson Oscar. She had many nieces and nephews and kept in touch and shared in their lives throughout the years. Mom was independent, curious, adventurous and strong before it was fashionable for women to be so. She liked to get things done and didn’t suffer fools gladly. She worked hard to instill these traits in her daughters and made it easy by always being there to catch us if we fell. Emily was a talented knitter and a great cook. For a number of years, she catered events at Francis Hall in Richmond, alongside her Mom and sisters, Mary and Flo. When her daughters were old enough to fend for themselves Emily worked in retail, retiring at the age of 70. Emily lived a long and healthy life and was an inspiration to everyone she met − she was one of a kind. We love her now and always. Thanks to the staff at Kin Village for their care and kindness.

OBITUARIES

Born October 5, 1929 in Messini, Greece. Passed away peacefully on May 3, 2022 in Vancouver, BC.

Teacher, Master Mason, Actor, Soccer Coach. “Do not go gentle into that good night, rage rage against the dying of the light.” Lyn Jeff Michelle

Susan moved back to Canada and followed her parents to the West Coast of Canada where she met her husband and partner Bjorn, and they started their wonderful Big Tent Family including 4 sons, Kai, Grayson, Kaden, and Toren. After 10 years of urban life, the family packed up and moved from downtown Vancouver, BC, and settled into Tsawwassen, BC, embracing and immersing themselves into its wonderful community. Susan and Bjorn created a home where everyone is always welcome. The door is always open to friends, family and home stays. The boys understand this and extend this to friends or anyone in need. Whether it be a special occasion or simply a bad day where you needed a shoulder to lean on or just needed a space away from home, the Read-Friedmann home is also your home. Whether it was the amazing camping trips or the expansion of the Christmas Eve gathering over the years, the Read-Friedmann’s always believe “the more, the merrier”. Susan will be deeply missed by all her beautiful boys, husband and best friend Bjorn, her sons Kai (Abby) Grayson, Kaden and Toren and by her beautiful friends. She leaves behind large extended families of the Reads, Friedmanns, Hughes, Gormans, Mardauses, Byrnells and Hermanns, many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends in Canada, US and abroad. She was well loved and will be missed immensely.

Upon her passing, she wished to thank all her special girls who helped her and the family through her medical journey. You are now a part of the Big Tent Family.

Paul will be sadly missed by his loving family; wife Theonie, children; Jimmy (Nancy), Regas (Ramona), and Helen. Grandchildren; Pavlo, Athena, Demetri, Alexi, Zoe and Nikolas. He will also be sadly missed by his nephews, nieces, and many friends.

SEDDON, Harry A. 1935 - 16th April, 2022

Susan was born and raised in Ottawa and was very proud of the 5 generations that lived and worked in the Ottawa Valley. She was a Political Science graduate of Carleton University who traveled extensively following her boyfriend and the “band” to London where she lived, worked and traveled for over 5 years. Susan had many adventures where she made many wonderful friendships that lasted through her years.

Susan was a person who made true friends wherever she would go. She developed deep loving friendships and would go to great lengths to help anyone in a time of need or at a time of celebration. Her loves in life included Bjorn, the boys, extended family and of course her beautiful friends.

BOUFEAS, Paul

We have lost you but our memories will keep you with us. Thank you for everything you have done for your family. We love you forever.

On April 16th, 2022, the world lost an angel on Earth. A wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend to many, Mary (Susan) Read-Friedmann, 57 years young received a call to let her know that her work here is done.

Last but certainly not least, Susan wanted to include a very special thank you to her sister, Tina for the amazing love and care through her final days. The family is forever grateful. Susan was looking forward to becoming a Grandmother one day. For now, she will watch over her husband, children and the future grandchildren as their Guardian Angel.

de la Giroday, Roger (Barry) December 4, 1941 − May 8, 2022 It is with extreme sadness that we announce Barry’s passing on May 8, 2022. Barry was predeceased by his parents, Armand and Kathleen, and sister Rosemarie. He is survived by his siblings, Armand Jr. (Mavis), Jeanette (Bill), Michelle, Denise (Kenny) and Carol Ann (Rick), as well as his many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. A funeral will be held at St. Joseph the Worker, 4451 Williams Rd, Richmond, BC, on May 28, 2022, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vancouver College Alumni Foundation.

WALLACE, Diane Leslie September 25, 1951 − February 4, 2022 EDINGER, David Glenn April 1956 - April 2022 It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of David Glenn Edinger on Monday, April 4th, 2022. He died peacefully surrounded by the love of his family. David grew up in the unique community of Cora Brown on Sea Island in Richmond, B.C. with his parents Dorothy and Alfred Edinger and his sister Bev. It was a close knit community allowing for a care free childhood where neighbours supported each other and lifelong friendships were forged. David served proudly as a firefighter with the Richmond Fire Department for 35 years. “Dave was the embodiment of what it means to be a firefighter; he was intelligent, dedicated, quick witted and funny when the occasion called for it.” He was also a Red Seal carpenter and throughout his life used his skill and knowledge to help those in need. David will be remembered for enriching the life of every person he encountered. He did so with kindness, compassion, and willingness to lend a helping hand at every opportunity. From building homes for communities in need to helping family, friends and neighbours with the largest or smallest of tasks, Dave truly found joy in serving anyone in need. Dave had a passion for playing, coaching, and watching sports, listening and sharing his great taste in music, and taking care of numerous family pets. He deeply valued the friendships that he made and most of all he loved spending time with and caring for his family. Dave will be forever remembered with love by his wife and best friend, Fran; their children Brock and Connor; his sister Bev (Ken) and their children Ben and Robyn and their families. Thank you to the many friends who helped us during Dave’s illness; your care is deeply appreciated. In memory of Dave please consider a donation to one of the following: BC Cancer Foundation to PATH (Head and Neck Cancer). A charity of your choice that provides assistance to those in need. Provide an unexpected act of service for a neighbour, a friend or a stranger. Celebration of Life to honour Dave on June 11th at 1:30 pm at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56 St, Tsawwassen. Diane died suddenly and unexpectedly of heart failure at age 70. Diane leaves her mother, Joan, still thriving at age 94, and her brother James (Susan Delaval). Diane was predeceased by her father Daniel in 2019.

Her first acting experience was in a student production of Arthur Miller’s ’The Crucible,’ in which she played the youngest daughter. She then went on to work in the costume department at the Banff School of Fine Arts and travelled with the Shaw Festival on a tour from Niagara−on−the−Lake to the Northeastern United States. Diane soon realized that theatre was an uncertain way of life and decided instead to use her keen intellect and prodigious memory as a court reporter (Verbatim Method). As such, Diane travelled across Canada reporting on human rights hearings held by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. One of her more interesting assignments was to cover the first sitting of the newly elected territorial government of the Northwest Territories in Yellowknife. After many years of travel for work, she settled into her Toronto apartment full time and reported on hearings of the Toronto City Council. On retirement, she was back in her Tsawwassen family home near Vancouver, where she became an active member of the University Women’s Club of South Delta.
