Long-time politician Jackson not seeking re-election Lois Jackson was first elected to Delta municipal council in 1972 and has served continuously except for one term SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Long-time Delta city council member Lois Jackson is calling it a career after almost five decades in civic politics. Not only witnessing many changes in the community she loves, but also playing a part in its growth, Jackson told the Optimist she won’t be seeking re-election in this October’s civic election. “It’s been a good run and we’ve accomplished a lot. I’m really proud of the things we’ve done and got to work with excellent councillors and staff over the years,” she said. Jackson was first elected to Delta council in December 1972 and, except for one term when she didn’t run for reelection, has served continuously. She was Delta’s mayor from 1999 to 2018 and was also chair of the Greater Vancouver Regional District for several years. She is currently a councillor again. “I’ve done a lot and I’ve done what I wanted to accomplish. There’s so many things I can talk about but, you know, it’s been just such a pleasure to serve people all this time,” said Jackson. In 1972, Jackson, a North Delta resident who campaigned for “orderly, planned quality growth patterns” and “preservation and production of agricultural lands,” became the first female Delta alderman. At that time, she was a married

Sunday school teacher with three children, having also been the past chair of the North Delta Ratepayers Association. One of 10 candidates in that election, Jackson captured the third and final seat up for grabs. During that campaign, Jackson told the Optimist, “A woman’s viewpoint on council has long been lacking.” Delta’s population was still growing rapidly since the opening of the George Massey Tunnel, bringing various pressures, challenges as well as ramifications that city council is dealing with today.

A political survivor, Jackson has run with a variety of slates over the years as well as running as an independent candidate. She had long been considered a populist and her longevity in civic politics had often been credited to her ability to adapt to a changing landscape. Still believing she had much to offer for council, Jackson was a late addition to former city manager George Harvie’s Achieving for Delta slate in 2018, winning a council seat. However, during the last four years,

it was clear Jackson and Mayor Harvie, whom she had hired to be Delta’s CAO in 2002, were at odds. “I’m really disappointed in how things turned out, let’s just say,” she added. Jackson, now in her 80s, said she won’t be voting for anyone on the Achieving for Delta slate, except for candidate Rod Binder, who ran with her on the Delta Independent Voters Association ticket in 2014 when she was re-elected mayor. He didn’t win a council seat in that race. “I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to do. I’d certainly take a run against George if I was a little younger and didn’t have what I got now on my plate,” noted Jackson. She expressed concern that potential full slates on council and school board will result in both ending up doing nothing more than “rubber stamping” without necessary questions and debate. Still a North Delta resident, Jackson late last year took an approved leave of absence but returned to the council table in March. She added that she’ll wait to see who else decides to run for city council and school board to see if she’ll endorse anyone else, but has already been approached by some considering running and asking for assistance in the campaign. No more plastic checkout bags in Delta as of June 6 SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta’s ban on plastic checkout bags officially goes into effect on Monday, June 6. City council late last year unanimously approved a new regulation to prohibit singleuse plastic bags to customers, although there are several exemptions for items such as meat or frozen food, plants, prepared foods, bulk items, prescription drugs, printed materials, linens and laundry. Businesses can provide a plastic checkout bag to a customer if the bag has been returned to the business for the purpose of being reused by other customers, according to the city, noting the exception is intended to support charitable organizations and thrift stores who commonly use the practice to cut costs for their customers and reuse materials already in circulation. Plastic bags may also be sold in packages of multiple bags for use at a customer’s home or business. The regulation also prohibits prepared food in any food service ware that contains polystyrene foam, but that rule also comes with a few exceptions as well. After the bylaw’s adoption, Delta businesses were given six months to transition prior to imple-

mentation, which begins June 6. Similar to regulations already in place in other municipalities, Delta’s bylaw also introduces a charge of .25 cents per paper checkout bag and $2 per reusable checkout bag. Delta city manager Sean McGill told the Optimist that bylaw staff will only act on a complaint basis for at least the rest of this year, not going store-to-store to check on what businesses are doing and handing out fines. The goal is to help businesses by educating them on the use of alternatives. “For bylaws, it’s always about education, so we will actively be educating. That can be our bylaws and/or climate action staff. At some point, we will be going to bylaw infractions as part of the implementation but that will be phasetwo. For the most part, it will always be education first,” explained McGill. He added the city has received positive feedback on the bylaw and the city’s approach. The Delta bylaw was written to be consistent with bans in other B.C. municipalities, as well as regulations and guidelines developed by the provincial government and Metro Vancouver. Jill McKnight, executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, said she believes busi-

However, the public may not be aware of the new rules retailers will have to follow. “I know the city is focusing on education but I don’t know if that’s necessarily translated down to the end consumer yet. Come June 6, when a fee could be added to people’s bills, that’s when you could start seeing a bit more of a response. There needs to be patience from everybody because some of the retail workers are the ones who could be getting the negative back-

lash about this,” she said. McKnight noted signage for businesses to communicate the new bylaw would be a helpful resource during the period of adjustment. Michelle Barlow, executive director of the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, said she hasn’t heard any specific concerns from member businesses regarding the plastic bag ban, and many local retailers have already switched to an alternate. Three years ago, a delegation of Seaquam Secondary students requested city council

implement a plastic bag ban. At the time, council agreed with a staff recommendation that a bylaw should be harmonious with neighbouring municipalities. Because the City of Victoria’s plastic bag bylaw had been quashed by the BC Court of Appeal, it was also agreed that a province-wide approach was preferred. The province subsequently gave municipalities the authority to regulate such single-use items, including plastic checkout bags, which enabled Delta to enact its own bylaw without needing provincial approval.

Delta councillor Copeland not seeking re-election SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Dan Copeland is leaving public office after one term on Delta council. The city’s former fire Chief said he won’t be seeking re-election in this year’s municipal election, but will look back on the last four years fondly. He joined George Harvie’s Achieving for Delta team in the 2018 municipal election, winning a council seat by finishing with the thirdmost votes in that race. Copeland told the Optimist this week his decision to run for public office was based on how much the community has provided him and his family as well as a desire to keep Delta a great place to live. “As I look back on 40 years of public service with the City of Delta, most rewarding is my

Dan Copeland 36 years as a career firefighter with Delta Fire and Emergency Services. The last two years working through the pandemic has allowed me time to reflect, and reset, therefore I have made the decision to retire from public life and focus on more time with my wife, our nine grandkids, our family and my 89-year-old mother,” said Copeland. “I wish those who choose to serve ‘good luck’ and ‘much success’ as they move Delta forward into the future.” He has been a member

of council which tackled some significant issues including housing, having approved Delta’s new Housing Action Plan. He didn’t always agree with his Achieving for Delta colleagues, having voted in opposition to the proposed townhouse development fronting the Beach Grove Golf Club and voting against an application to build another high-rise on 93A Avenue and Scott Road. Copeland had a distinguished career with Delta’s fire service including the secondlongest tenure as fire Chief with 11 years at the helm. His departure from council, as well as veteran council members Lois Jackson and Bruce McDonald, means at least three seats will have been vacated, guaranteeing a new-look for Delta council following the Oct. 15 municipal election.

Delta expresses concerns with policing recommendations SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

“My comment is Delta is doing fine, leave us alone.” That’s what Mayor George Harvie had to say during the May 18 meeting of the Delta Police Board during discussion on the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act’s recently released report, containing a series of recommendations for overhauling policing and community safety in the province. The recommendations include the establishment of a new Community Safety and Policing Act as well as a provincial police agency that would be governed by the act. It would mean replacing the RCMP but what’s not clear is how it will impact municipalities that have their own police forces including Delta, said Harvie, who chairs the police board. Harvie noted the report is vague and doesn’t have a specific mention of police forces being regionalized, but indicates a sharing of resources which could mean Delta tax-

payers could end up paying costs of other departments. “Keep your hands off our Delta police force,” he later added. Noting police chiefs are asking for more information, Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord told the board certain services could end up being regionalized. How that would happen and where the province would start is unclear, he noted. A report to the police board said one of the priorities identified by the committee includes “amalgamating police services on a regional basis where there are opportunities to address fragmentation, ensure equitable access to policing and public safety, and improve efficiency and effectiveness.” Dubord said Delta is already “well ahead of the curve” when it comes to enhancing its policing model including being the first in B.C. to have a Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan. The report to the board notes Delta performs “excellent” in resourcing compari-

The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General publishes an annual report on police resources with data for all municipal police departments and RCMP detachments. That report allows Delta

Police to compare itself with the provincial context of resources including population to police ratio, crime rates, caseload and overall funding. As in previous years, due to differences in funding models between municipal police

departments and the RCMP, Delta is compared only to its independent counterparts. The average cost per capita for all municipal departments is $419, with Delta being well below the average at $368. The average crime rate for 2020 was 63, with Delta falling significantly below the average with a rate of 41. The related case load per officer in Delta is also lower than average at 23 cases per officer, compared to 36 on average. Dubord said that because Delta is different than other communities, the police workflow is different and more pro-active, while the size of the force hasn’t been reduced. He added Delta Police will work hard to provide input on whatever committees are formed on how to implement the various recommendations. The report notes the committee members recognize the need for ongoing review and oversight with respect to policing and public safety, recommending the establishment of an all-party select standing committee.

Delta Police Chief weighs in on prolific offenders task force IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta’s Police Chief says he is looking forward to further investigation into the ongoing issue of prolific offenders in B.C. communities. Neil Dubord said while Delta Police are dealing with a number of prolific offenders here in Delta, the numbers show that his department is managing the issue quite effectively. “We are fortunate that way. Vancouver, Victoria and some of the larger centres have more prolific offenders and it is more difficult to manage,” he said. “I was

thrilled to see the province looking at this and creating this task force. It is certainly an issue that demands more study and some solutions.” Recently, the provincial government, in co-operation with British Columbia’s Urban Mayors’ Caucus (BCUMC), hired two experts to investigate and report on prolific offenders and random violent attacks. The investigation and recommendations will be completed by two people: Doug LePard, former Vancouver Police Department deputy chief and former Metro Vancouver Transit police chief, who has authored several reports and

sets of recommendations related to issues of crime and police response; and Amanda Butler, a health researcher and criminologist whose specialties include mental health, substance-use disorders, criminal justice systems and prison health. Dubord said some of the things LePard and Butler will be looking at are the origins of evolving crime trends for chronic property crime and violent offences. “So they’re actually going to look at the research, intelligence and analytical literature to see if they can find how these offenders are getting here to this

stage in their life,” said Dubord. “They will use academic reports and practical knowledge in this review.” Dubord said they will also be looking at legislation and what tools are available that police and others are maybe not using as effectively as they should. “They are also going to look at electronic monitoring in the court system and the possibility of expanding that, which I think is a great, innovative approach,” he said. “There are also going to be reviews of mental health and housing supports, which I think is also vitally important to get to the root of this problem.”

Delta urges second Ladner exit with tunnel replacement SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The George Massey Tunnel replacement project should include a second exit out of Ladner before proceeding. That’s what Mayor George Harvie and council agreed on Monday, following a presentation by a representative of the Highway 99 Tunnel Program who provided a timeline on the project that will see a new eightlane immersed tunnel replace the current crossing. Following an environmental assessment, construction of the new tunnel is to commence and finish by 2030. However, the project is lacking in a couple of key areas that should be addressed before construction starts, said Harvie.

One is that a second exit, which was included in the previous bridge plan that was cancelled by the New Democrat government, out of Ladner be included. The bridge plan by the previous Liberal government included an exit southbound onto River Road and Highway 17A. Delta also does not accept the use of the existing Millennium Trail as an active transportation connection for the tunnel project. Harvie noted a simple solution would be an overpass. He said Delta has seen the same problem previously with the lack of adequate access routes with the Alex Fraser Bridge and South Fraser Perimeter Road projects. Coun. Dylan Kruger agreed, describing the second exit as “absolutely

essential” and that it would add only $10-to$20 million to what will be a multi-billion-dollar project. To not have it done when the tunnel replacement is underway and adding it at a later time would only be more costly, Kruger said. Council agreed to write to Premier John Horgan and Highways Minister Rob Fleming requesting the changes. Coun. Bruce McDonald said he still wants to know how the province selected a tunnel over a new bridge without having done an environmental assessment. The province is currently in an early engagement phase of the environmental assessment process for the project’s Initial Project Description.

May Days issues apology after allowing Action4Canada float into parade The Ladner May Days committee has issued a public statement of apology following backlash over a float in Sunday’s parade. The group Action4Canada and their participation in the parade prompted several complaints to the Optimist and the fact they were handing out what was described as “inappropriate” literature during the parade. There was also considerable backlash on social media as well. Late Monday evening the committee issued a statement to the Optimist: “The Ladner May Days committee would like to acknowledge that there was a float in the parade that caused

some concern this past weekend. The committee was not aware of the nature of this organization’s viewpoint, and as such, were also surprised by the content of their message. Our committee has made the decision to ban this group from attending May Days and from participating in any future May Days parades. “Learning from this incident, our committee is working on guidelines to ensure this doesn’t happen again. This group does not represent our committee or our community and we apologize for allowing them to take part in our otherwise successful May Days event.” -Ian Jacques Presents our 17 Annual

IAN JACQUES

t is an end of an era in Delta politics. After almost five decades in civic office, Lois Jackson has announced she will not be seeking re-election in the Oct. 15 municipal election. In 1972, she became the first female alderman in Delta. In the years that followed, she was part of a tremendous history and growth in the community and was influential in many of the decisions that helped shaped our community. Jackson was Delta’s mayor from 1999 to 2018 and before those years as the top municipal politician in Delta, she served as councillor. She was on Delta council in some capacity since 1972 with the exception of only one term. It has been a remarkable run in local politics. This past term, where she was elected to council in 2018 as part of Mayor George Harvie’s Achieving for Delta team, has been a tough one for Jackson. She recently returned from a sixmonth approved leave of absence for undisclosed reasons. Throughout the past four years she has often been at odds with Harvie and other councillors over various issues and admitted this week in an interview with the Optimist that she is “disappointed in how things turned out.” But that’s politics. Sometimes you agree. Sometimes you disagree and sometimes you just simply get to a place where you can’t get along and maybe it is time to take a bow and exit stage left. That appears to be the case as Jackson brings an end to her political career. While I have not always agreed with Jackson and some of her opinions and thoughts at the council table, I have always respected her for her commitment to this community and her commitment to try and make this community better. That fact cannot be challenged by anyone. Thank you Lois for your service and dedication. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement.

or the past few months, I’ve been teaching international MBA students who are new to Canada. They are incredibly bright, hard working professionals, very polite and respectful. It has been quite interesting meeting and learning from them. When I ask about their impressions of life in Canada, it always comes back to one topic – it’s cold here. It’s not unusual, even in May, to have someone in class with a heavy coat on. It’s a lot warmer in Columbia or Sri Lanka, not quite used to Vancouver yet, I guess. In early March, I was telling them the nice weather will be here soon. The blossoms will come out, the city in full bloom, it will be gorgeous, just wait! Didn’t happen. In April, I told them the nice weather is just around the corner, the sun will come out and it will start warming up. Didn’t happen. Now that May is ending, and

we haven’t seen many days of sunshine and warmth yet, they think, at best, I’m lying. At worst, they think I’m a little crazy. As I look across the street at my neighbour’s cherry tree, the blossoms are still out. In June. Where are we, Calgary? This is a lost spring. One day a switch will flip and it will heat up quickly, and our fair skin that has been covered up for so long will need layers of SPF 70 sunscreen to protect us. It reminds me of Expo ’86.

The fair opened at the beginning of May, and essentially got rained out. At the beginning of July, the sun came out and we didn’t see a cloud for months. Maybe that’s what we can expect this year. It seems we always get a certain amount of a season, it all depends on when it starts. If we get snow in November, the blossoms are out in February. If summer doesn’t arrive until July, we have nice weather until the end of October. I don’t know where the Farmer’s get insight for their Almanac, but I wouldn’t be asking for suggestions on lottery numbers any time soon. In the meantime, when it comes to my students, I just have to come to grips with a true, west-coast reality. In Vancouver, we don’t tan, we rust. Welcome to the Vancouver Rain Festival – Sept. 1 to Aug. 31. All this rain is good for the plants. At least we don’t have to shovel it.

Thanking our amazing community Editor: Recently, on Monday, May 16 just after 4 a.m. the Tsawwassen building I live in was broken into. The thieves got away with my 10-year-old son’s brand new BMX bike. The bike was a lot of money and was a special “turning 10” splurge, so it was definitely a punch in the gut especially, since I am a full-time working single-mother raising him on one income. Luckily it was all caught on surveillance footage, and I was able to get a snap shot

of the three thieves. I posted the pictures on the Tsawwassen Loop Facebook page, with a description of what had happened, hoping someone might recognize one of them. What transpired next is just so amazing and incredible and exactly why this is the absolute best community ever. Within hours of the post I received an outpouring of support and people asking if they could donate money to buy my son a new bike. I wasn’t expecting that type of response and

didn’t even know how to respond. Little did I know someone on this Facebook group was already organizing the donations and by the end of the day local businesses and individuals had donated more than $900 (just over what the bike initially cost), to buy my son’s bike back. A new lock was even donated. It’s just so touching seeing the community come together like that to support my son. I am so incredibly touched by everyone’s generosity. Melody Hodgins

Other suggestions for a quieter Delta Editor: Re: Let’s work for a quieter Delta (Optimist, letters, May 26) Somebody’s priorities are way out of whack. When we moved here in the late 90’s, police and ambulance sirens were rarely heard. Now, by my observations (living near 56th and 12th) sirens are routinely heard five to

eight times per 24-hour day. Another major irritant is traffic, specifically large earth-moving tractor trailers and other unmufflered vehicles rumbling between the 15 sets of traffic lights along the 18 streets between the border and Highway 17. Somebody should be giving consideration to these sources of irritat-

ing, sleep-interrupting noise before trying to persuade Nav Canada to alter inbound/outbound flight patterns of modern, twin-engine aircraft whose acoustic implications have been significantly lowered in the past 20 years with the introduction of engine fan bypass technology improvements. Dale Hunt

An important step, but more is needed Editor: Re: Salmon habitat restoration I was very pleased to read the recent articles re: salmon habitat restoration on the lower Fraser River (Optimist, May 19). These efforts are indeed an important step in the right direction to restoring our valuable salmon resource. The Fraser River estuary is a vital component of the Fraser watershed. I firmly believe that the entire Fraser watershed requires the same level of restoration to maximize the Fraser’s potential as an important food source. In terms of climate change I feel that it is imperative that

Canada recognize the issue of food security and give it the highest priority. We should call upon our local, provincial, and federal governments to work co-operatively to restore all of our watersheds and forests to a healthy state. Restoration projects would be a valuable example of how to transition to a more sustainable economy. The climate justice movement is now calling for watershed and forest restoration. After last November’s terrible floods B.C.’s insurance industry began calling for a change in B.C.’s forest management. Clear-cutting of our forests, wildfires,

and climate change were cited as the major contributors to the devastation caused by flooding and landslides. A collaboration between UBC, UVic, and the Pacific Salmon Foundation on Lower Fraser salmon restoration at a cost of $45-100 million per year over 25 years, the document is now peer reviewed and will soon be published. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change now says that humankind needs to take drastic action now to keep the earth habitable for human life, so as my dad said we need to “wake up and smell the coffee!” John Stevens

Delta fire knocks down “suspicious” blaze at Brandrith Park IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Damage is said to be extensive following a Monday night fire in one of the bathrooms near the tennis courts at Brandrith Park in Tsawwassen. Deputy Delta Fire Chief Tim Ipsen said when firefighters arrived on scene, just before 9 p.m., there was thick, grey smoke coming out of the roof. “Initially dispatched three trucks, but once engine two got on scene, the call was downgraded to two engines on scene,” said Ipsen. “The fire had been burning for a while, but crews knocked it down pretty quickly and they were able to prevent it from spreading into the concession and the other washroom.” Ipsen said Delta Fire responded to another call a few weeks ago at the other washroom. “The other washroom was also partially torched. There is extensive damage to the second washroom. It is

Ipsen said Delta Police are investigating. City of Delta Parks and Recreation Department director Carmen Gonzalez told the Optimist the washrooms would likely be closed to the public for upwards of three weeks.

She said portable washrooms will placed in the park. “This is a fairly resilient building so hopefully it will only take us a few weeks to remediate the damage and make the repairs,” she said. “We don’t have an estimate on costs as of yet.” She said fires such as this are disheartening to

see. “It is challenging for us for sure. We hate to see damage and vandalism at public amenities that are important to our community, so we are looking at how we can work together to deter this vandalism moving forward and ensure that we are protecting our assets,” she added.

Delta firefighters deal with brush blaze at Centennial Beach

So much for wet spring weather lowering the risk of fires at local parks. Delta firefighters were kept busy on Monday, May 23 dealing with a brush fire near the Boundary Bay Regional Park parking lot at Centennial Beach. “We sent a truck out of Tsawwassen (Hall No. 2) and also our Wildland (Quick Response Unit),” explained Delta Fire Deputy Chief Tim Ipsen. “They confirmed lots of flames in an area about 180 square feet. They were able to use the tank water and they had to kind of work quickly to hit the flanks

and perimeter to knock it down. “They also spent some time afterwards dealing with hot spots as there was concern about it being fairly windy and it encroaching on the washroom area and stuff like that.” Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the location certainly limits the possibilities. “It’s safe to say some sort of smoking or cigarettes. Something like that is typically human in nature but we can’t say that for sure,” Ipsen added. -Mark Booth

Delta 24/7 cooling centres to come in case of heat dome

City says they will be better prepared this summer SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta will have a plan in place to help the vulnerable should another heat dome hit the region this summer. Council on Monday approved a staff recommendation to have designated municipal facilities in North Delta, Tsawwassen and Ladner identified as 24/7 cooling centres during Level 2 BC Heat Alert Response events. A plan will include using Delta’s seniors’ buses to transport people to and from cooling centres and having a 24-hour information phone line about centre locations, transportation options and resources for dealing with the heat. The city will also look at options to accommo-

Also to make funding applications for mapping, assessment and planning, the city will submit a resolution to the Union of BC Municipalities asking the provincial government to recognize extreme heat events as public health emergencies. A report to council notes the BC Coroners Service attributes 526 deaths in the province to the heat dome event last summer. Most of the deaths were elderly people living alone at home. Delta Fire and Emergency Services reported 15 incidents of likely heat-related medical symptoms between June 26 and July 3, 2021, with 17 confirmed incidents of heat-related effects and seven deaths, although those deaths were not verified to be a result of the heat.

date pets during extreme heat events as well as assess the feasibility of installing temporary misting stations or portable water stations at key locations throughout Delta. The cooling centres will be in addition to municipal facilities that are equipped with air conditioning that will be available for people seeking respite from the heat, but those facilities will just be open during normal operating hours. The city will also work with community partners serving vulnerable seniors and the homeless in Delta to develop a plan to support and check in with those groups during extreme heat events. Staff will also develop a communications plan to promote Delta’s Beat the Heat strategy.

May Days Parade a special one for Tsawwassen family of bagpipers Last Sunday’s May Days Parade was the final performance for a retiring Delta Police Pipe Band (DPPB) member after more than three decades of dedicated service as well as his youngest son’s bagpiping debut. Jamie Thomson has been a bagpiper with the DPPB since 1985, joining in time to play for Princess Diana and Prince Charles at the opening ceremony of Expo 86. Since then, Thomson has played for Queen Elizabeth, Paul McCartney, famed wartime singer Vera Lynn and in dozens of concerts around the world. These experiences culminated at the parade where Thomson and his two sons, half-brothers Keith and Cameron marched alongside him. “I’ve had a heck of a good run at it,” he said, reflecting on his 37 years playing with the group. While he is stepping down as a performer, Thomson says he will continue serving with the band in administrative capacities, describing the move as “a chapter change -- still the same book but it’s a different section.” The event also marked the first parade with the DPPB for 26-year-old Cameron Thomson who has been attending parades and the DPPB’s Robbie Burns dinners since he was a toddler. As for learning the bagpipes, Cameron said he attempted to learn the instrument several times but only got really serious about it in the summer of 2021. “Playing with the band means a lot to me,” Cameron said. “Honestly I can’t remember a

time when I didn’t know many of its members so it feels like I’m really joining a family.” During the parade Cameron marched alongside his brother Keith Thomson who joined the band in 2009 having first picked up the pipes when he was 11. Keith called the May Days performance a fitting final performance for his father, Ladner being the place of the band’s formation in 1971. Overall, Thomson says he is “overjoyed” that Keith and Cameron are in the band together, that they can join in and experience all the fun that he had. “It’s just amazing, there’s so much out there to do,” he said, adding it’s an honour to “hand the gift to somebody else.” Prior to the parade, the DPPB

were on the steps of City Hall in Ladner, recording a special performance that will be part of today’s (June 2) The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons as town criers, pipe bands, buglers and choirs from the United Kingdom and around the world come together to join in the celebrations in their own individual and special way. DPPB’s performance is being collaborated with their “friends” in California — the Palm Springs Air Museum Pipe Band. “We are proud to be a part of this momentous celebration,” said DPPB president Gary Brookes. “It is only appropriate that this unique milestone in history is marked by the playing of Diu Regnare, a unique tune specially written for the

JIM KINNEAR PHOTO

occasion by Piper Major Stuart Liddell, the world’s leading piper. We are honoured to be part of this special event.” Following a very limited 50th anniversary year due to COVID, DPPB is looking forward to a much more robust 2022 schedule that will include performances at the Boundary Bay Air Show, Tsawwassen Sun Fest, Penticton Peach Festival and a special October fundraising concert at the South Delta Baptist Church. “We thrive on performances and parade venues because we love to perform in front of people,” Brookes added. A special DPBD 50th anniversary commemorative coin is also now on sale. Email info@ deltapolicepipeband.ca for more information.

Bandfest is back this weekend in Ladner’s Memorial Park

The 16th annual Ladner Bandfest is back in Memorial Park this weekend, June 4 to 5. This popular, free event will see 18 concert bands perform on alternating stages set up on the lawn near the Ladner Pioneer Library. Bands this year include four based in musicallyrich Delta: the host

Delta Music Makers, the Delta Concert Band, Brass, Wind & Wire, and Loades of Music, plus bands from Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Langley, Fraser Valley, Surrey, and New Westminster. The grand finale on Sunday at 4 p.m. will

be performed by the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, visiting from their base at Esquimalt. Preceding the Naden Band, at 3:20 p.m., the Delta Music Makers will perform their signature theatre and screen music, solo instrumental features, Canadiana, and concert marches.

The public is asked to bring lawn chairs and setting in for two days of music. Food services will be provided by TOOB, offering burgers, hotdogs, and their famous curly fries and more. Bandfest organizers are thrilled to be back after a hiatus due to the pandemic.

“It will be three years since our last Bandfest in 2019, and we are so happy to be back,” said Bandfest committee member and Music Makers conductor Curt Janzen. “Dig out your lawn chairs, pack some snacks, and pick your spot. Memorial Park is perfect for people to bring families to enjoy the music of all these fine concert bands.”

South Delta artists took to heart the phrase “Art has a responsibility” and “Art has a voice” in our community, which is part of the Guild mandate. Art, whether we paint, form three-dimensional pieces, work in theater or write, artists have a unique way of speaking to our audience. Gallery visitors (more than 230) responded with enthusiasm to our show

helping to raise more than $500 for OWL. Colour Your Dreams claimed the gallery for the May show. Colour of course is a draw, and our dreams are made up of impressions – sometimes fleeting, but always a pleasant memory of a trip, a gathering, a friend or a treasured pet. Flowers, majestic mountains, beautiful buildings make up the repertoire that artists capture. Sunsets grace the walls, boats in dry dock, reflected in a glass-like water image. Media Partner:

The fundraiser is being held to help keep the tuition fees for the Jazz Festival affordable for local families, and to help fund the musical events associated with the festival. The COVID pandemic has severely impacted the high school band programs in South Delta, making it even more important for DCMS to provide musical education and entertainment in the Ladner and Tsawwassen communities. Hating evil

Last Tuesday (May 24), we were confronted with evil as we learned about the devastating news of the shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers. When I first heard of the shooting, I was heartbroken, devastated, and angry. In a video that went viral on social media, Golden State Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr addressed the media with raw emotions of anger at what had happened. Is it okay to be angry when we witness such evil in this world? The bible says that God hates evil. “His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence” (Psalm 11:5). I do not use the word “hate” lightly, but God hates sin and the bible calls us to hate sin.

Minister’s Minute PAUL PARK

SOUTH DELTA BAPTIST CHURCH

Psalm 97:10 says, “O you who love the LORD, hate evil!” It’s okay for us to respond to such evil by grieving and being angry at the evil we experience and witness. However, it is not okay for us to grow numb to the evil in this world because we see it so often. It’s not okay to be okay with sin in our lives and in our world. The bible teaches us to show grace, forgive-

ness, and love toward sinners, but it never tells us to love sin or to grow numb to it. Sin is devastating; it’s painful; it’s deadly. Sin needs to stop. We need to eradicate it. Whenever I’m confronted by the evil of this world, I cling to the truth that, despite the evil we experience today, there is a God who loves us so much that he gave his own life to save us from our sins. He will eventually bring judgement to all evil and usher in a day where sin will be no more, and having been set free from sin, we will be bound by righteousness rather than evil. Take courage. Our church prayed for the families of the victims and the community of Uvalde during our service last Sunday. I encourage you to take time to pray for them as well.

Gardening

METRO CREATIVE PHOTO

Novice gardeners have scores of resources at their disposal, including the advice of gardeners who have made mistakes and learned from them.

Six ways to make your garden more successful Homeowners enjoy gardening for many different reasons. In addition to adding beauty to a property, gardens can offset grocery costs by yielding tasty produce. They also offer important habitats and food sources for both insects and animals. While growing a vegetable or flower garden can turn into a rewarding hobby, or even a passion, gardening also can be overwhelming - particularly when the results are less than stellar. Novice gardeners have scores of resources at their disposal, including the advice of gardeners who have made

mistakes and learned from them. The following guidance can make home gardens that much more successful. 1. Start small You may have visions of an expansive garden growing rows of crops or acres of flowers. But it is smart to start small and build on what you find successful, which includes plants that thrive in your lawn and garden. This also is beneficial if you are unsure of vegetable yields. Several blooming plants producing bushels of crops can be overwhelming, especially if you can’t get to harvest-

ing in a timely fashion. 2. Assess the soil Plants need nutrientrich soil to encourage extensive root systems and produce strong, hardy plants, according to the gardening resource GrowVeg. Nourish soil with organic matter, such as manure, compost, shredded leaves, and natural mulch. Add this organic matter in the offseason to give it enough time to be incorporated into the ground before spring. You can have your soil tested for pH and other characteristics that make it friendly or averse to plants at a local garden centre.

Popular insect repellant plants Homeowners choose plants for their properties based on a number of variables. Some may be into growing their own foods, while others desire their gardens to be an awe-inspiring mix of bright colors and alluring scents. There’s no wrong reason to plant a fresh garden, but some plants offer extra benefits, such as repelling insects. The good news for avid gardeners is that certain plants can help repel insects and provide the additional benefits like fresh food and aesthetic appeal that so many people love. *Basil: There’s more to fresh basil than its scent, as the Farmers’ Almanac notes it can be used to repel mosqui-

toes and moths. *Lavender: Fleas, flies, mosquitoes, and moths are not fans of this aromatic and colorful member of the mint family. Bees tend to be drawn to lavender, a durable plant that many garden centers recommend in areas prone to drought. *Mint: This is another plant that is instantly recognizable for its aroma. But mint lovers may not realize that it’s also great for keeping ants at bay. Mint also can be used to repel mosquitoes. *Lemongrass: This tropical grass that’s so fragrant it’s often used in perfumes. Lemongrass contains citronella, which many people associate with repelling mosquitoes. -Metro Vancouver

3. Arm yourself with knowledge Do you know how deeply to plant seeds and how far apart to space plants? Are you aware of the sunlight needs of certain flowers or plants? If not, read the packaging and do your research so your plants have the best chance of not only sprouting, but also surviving. Many people prefer to start seedlings indoors in late winter and then transfer those plants outdoors when they are stronger and more established. 4. Choose hardy varieties. Certain plants have

been bred to thrive in your climate, including heat-tolerant plants for climates with sweltering summer sun. Consult with a local gardening centre to figure out which plant zone you are in and which plants will do best within that zone. 5. Sit in your yard and observe. Watch the way the sunlight dances over areas of your landscape. Take note of which areas get the most sun and shade. This will help you plan what to plant and where to plant it. Vegetable gardens tend to need ample sunlight to bear pick-

worthy produce. You can give plants a leg up by growing them in optimal conditions. 6. Use rainwater Rainwater contains fewer contaminants and additives than tap water, which can benefit garden plants. Collect rainwater in rain barrels and use irrigation systems to deliver it to the garden. Home gardens can yield many gifts, from flowers to fruit. Beginners can utilize some timetested strategies to increase their chances of planting a successful garden. -Metro Creative

Social media: It’s not just for kids anymore

Perhaps due to the popularity of social media among a generation of young people who grew up with it, platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are often associated with people born in the 21st century. However, a 2018 study from the Pew Institute found that 65 percent of adults between the ages of 50 and 64 used Facebook and 68 percent used YouTube. Social media is often on the receiving end of negative attention, but it’s also a potentially valuable tool that can help men and women over 50 stay connected with their communities. That’s not always so easy for adults who no longer have children at home. And as its name suggests, social media can help users connect with others who share their interests. Such connections also can be hard to make for adults over 50. Adults over 50 may be more comfortable with social media now than they were a decade ago, but it’s still a good idea to brush up on basic security measures that can help men and women protect their privacy as they utilize platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. * Protect your personal information. No social media user has the right

METRO CREATIVE

It’s a good idea to brush up on basic security measures that can help men and women protect their privacy as they utilize platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. to access your personal information, including your address, date of birth or other data unique to you. Avoid interacting with anyone who requests personal information, employing the function to block such users from connecting with you when possible. It’s also

important to keep information about travel plans private. For example, sharing details of an upcoming vacation can serve notice to potential criminals that no one will be in your house, making it a potential target for burglars. * Aim for quality, not quantity, when

building social media networks. Avoid accepting friend requests from individuals you don’t know. Cyber criminals often gain access to victims via social media, so limit your social media network to people you know and trust. * Turn off location information. The technology behind social media is impressive and even makes it possible to determine where users are when they tweet or post to other platforms. But many users, especially those concerned about their privacy, don’t want to share location information with anyone, much less strangers. Turn off location information and routinely double check to make sure it’s still turned off. * Discuss others’ privacy concerns before posting to social media. Social media isn’t for everyone, and some people may not want photos of themselves or their children posted to platforms like Facebook or Instagram. Prior to posting pictures or information about other people, confirm that they’re OK with you doing so. Adults over 50 are engaging with social media. But no matter how comfortable users become, it’s still best to keep various social media safety protocols in mind. -Metro Creative

What to do about wellness after 50? Reaching one’s 50th birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being for decades to come. * Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. * Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is improved by engagement in demanding everyday tasks. That study reported

that people who learned new skills experienced greater memory improvement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging. * Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Over time, that natural decline affects strength and agility. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s. * Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. Opportunities to socialize with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or become more independent. Individuals can take advantage of opportunities to socialize whenever possible. Various strategies can help people maintain mental and physical wellness as they make their way through their 50s and beyond. -Metro Creative

How to organize a social club

The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic taught the world many lessons, not the least of which was how easy it can be take socializing for granted. Lockdown was a big part of life during the early days of the pandemic, as people were forced to stay home from work and school and remain largely isolated, even from their own friends and family members. The sense of isolation that many people developed during those early days of the pandemic likely didn’t come as a surprise to medical researchers, particularly those who have studied the effects of isolation on aging populations. Social clubs can be a great way for adults over 50 to avoid isolation and loneliness. Such clubs can provide opportunities to connect with individuals who share similar interests. Perhaps the best thing about social clubs is that anyone can start one. These tips can help individuals over 50 start social clubs that appeal to locals who are on the lookout for fun ways to meet new people. * Think of a hobby unique to your location. One of the best ways to attract other locals is to find a hobby that caters to residents in your area.

For example, coastal residents may want to start a local fishing club, while city dwellers may draw more interest starting a club focused on local museums or restaurants. * Take all comers. Individuals over 50 may aspire to meet people in situations similar to their own, but they should still allow anyone interested in their club to join. Adults in the early stages of midlife (i.e., their thirties and forties) are often too busy with their personal and professional lives to make much time for social clubs, so it’s likely that those interested will be 50 or older. But accepting all who are interested can increases the chances of starting a diverse and engaging group. * Spread the word. Meetup (meetup.com) has been facilitating connections for two decades, making it a great place to start a group for people with shared interests. * Find a public place to get together. It’s best to avoid hosting club events and meetings at a private residence, including your own. Instead, prior to starting the club, look around for meeting places. Ask about reserving spaces for meetings and look for places that are accessible for all people. -Metro Creative

How to make new friends after 50 The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time many people reach their late 30s and early 40s, they’re balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities tend to be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside of work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 undoubtedly recognize that it’s not always so easy to make new friends, even though it’s undeniably beneficial to have supportive relationships into your golden years. Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during your school days, but these strategies can help men and women in midlife build new friendships. * Identify your interests. Fiftysomethings who have spent the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested you are in a given activity, the more likely you are to stick with it. And the longer you stick with something, the more likely you are to meet like-minded

individuals. * Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had any readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it much easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these groups can be great ways to meet new people. * Sign up for group outings. Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, the theater, sporting events, and other day trips. Signing up for a bus trip to a local museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share your interests, providing the potential to build lasting friendships built on a foundation of shared interests. * Broaden your horizons. Just because you’re in your 50s doesn’t mean your friends have to be. Don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Friends come in all shapes, sizes and ages, so you could be missing out if you’re not willing to extend a hand in friendship to people of different ages and backgrounds. -Metro Creative

Kate and Jane McDonald are key Grade 12 members of the Sun Devils girls soccer team that is concluding its season at this week’s B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships in Cloverdale. It was eight years ago when the twins were in the stands at B.C. Place Stadium watching their oldest brother Jack as he captained South Delta to its first-ever provincial football “AAA” championship in his Grade 12 year. Another brother, Grant, was also a key member of that team as an aged up Grade 10 and now plays in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Their dad, former CFL player Bruce McDonald, served on the Sun Devils coaching staff. It was then youngest brother Ben’s turn as he quarterbacked the Sun Devils to the No. 1 provincial ranking in 2019, earning all-star honours before continuing down the family pipeline to the University of Calgary. Even with all the brothers’ success on the football field, Kate and Jane have made the greatest impact of all, playing on several SDSS teams.

Multi-sport twins

It started back in Grade 8, the one and only season the twins played basketball, helping South Delta finish fourth at provincials with Jane earning second team all-star honours. They have thrived for the last five years on the volleyball court and saved their best for last, providing tremendous leadership as the Sun Devils dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Riverside in the B.C. AAAA Championship gold medal match back in December. Now they are taking one last run for glory on the soccer pitch with Jane (central defender) and Kate (striker) holding down starting positions for the South Fraser champion and provincial contending Sun Devils. They have been making an impact with the senior team since Grade 8. “They play essentially gold level community soccer and they come up against the best from the (high performance league)

Grade 12 twins Kate and Jane McDonald are the last of five siblings to make a big impact on South Delta Secondary athletic teams over the past decade. world and they just have the innate ability to say ‘no this is my ball, you are not going to win it,’” said SDSS soccer co-coach and coathletic director Brent Sweeney. They’re the glue to this team for sure.”

Heading east

If the twins are going to continue their athletic careers at the post-secondary level it will be in volleyball and it could be as walkon players at Queen’s University. Both have already been accepted into the Kingston, ON school with Jane and Kate planning on pursuing business and nursing degrees respectively. The honour roll students decided to head east after all three of their brothers went to Calgary, making their

academic options the top priority over sports. “It’s nice to branch out a little,” laughed Kate. “For sure we considered Calgary a lot because it was all that we knew and the boys liked it a lot.” “I really want to play volleyball. We are going to go there and feel it out, just to see how it goes,” added Jane who was a provincial tournament all-star this past season. Regardless, the 2022/23 school year will begin next September for SDSS athletic teams with no more McDonalds to lean on. “Jane and Kate are special kids from a special family,” added Sweeney. “From their older brothers to their parents, it’s been a great run at South Delta. Now we’ll have wait for their grand-kids.”

A trio of podium finishes for Tsawwassen baseball teams

It was a busy and productive Victoria Day weekend for Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association (TABA) teams at tournaments around Metro Vancouver. TABA teams came away with podium finishes at events in Ridge Meadows, Vancouver and Surrey. Here is a breakdown of those accomplishments: 13UAA Athletics Tsawwassen brought out the big sticks to roll to first place honours at the Don Breau Invitational in Ridge Meadows. The team belted seven home runs over the weekend, including four from Matteo Muller. Dominic Trolland added a pair, including a grand slam. Oscar Dangaran added a solo shot. The Athletics went 5-0, including a 16-4 mercy-rule win over the Ladner Red Sox in their final game. The team also features: Aidan Hope, Callum Memmott, Holden Ross, Jordan Lappin. Kane LaPorte, Rhys Dupuis, Sawyer Kettlewell, Sullivan Toddhunter and Zacary Prokop. Head coach Kirby Trolland is joined by assistants Carey Prokop, Shane Toddhunter and Jerrick Dangaran. 13UA Athletics A terrific weekend at the President’s

Cup in Vancouver concluded with Tsawwassen defeating the host Expos 16-9 in the bronze medal game. The result came after the Athletics fell to the Richmond Chuckers in the semi-finals. The team includes: Alex Wood, Charlie Pierreroy, Jasper Smith, Noah Wessel, Owen Mayhew, Rowan Kettlewell, Sam Czettisch, Sam Stelle and Tyler Losse, with help from tournament pick-up Linden Savage. Head coach Brian Losse is joined on the coaching staff by Matt Kettlewell. 11U Mosqutio Select Exhibition Team (MSET) Tsawwassen has its first-ever win at the Kathy Thomas Memorial Tournament in Surrey thanks to a 21-8 triumph over the North Langley Raptors in the championship game. The team was on fire throughout the tournament with great pitching and several home runs, going 3-1 in round-robin play. The players include: Alec McDonald, Avery Sanders, Axel Asher, Brayden Allen, Breslin McCaw, Brody Norman, Dekker Schmidt, Dylan Armitage, Harrison Mortimer-Lamb, Kenzo Mitobe, Lukas Folster, Rory Lee and Tyler Lupien. Head coach Jason Lupien is joined by assistant Colin Norman.

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

CARTER, Vernon D. April 20, 1959 − May 14, 2022 Early morning on May 14th, 2022, at just 63 years old, we lost Vernon Dale Carter. Loved by so many, including his wife Jill Donaldson, his family, friends and his children Garret, Meagan and Paige. Vern’s endless talent, humour and amazing food are just some of the things that will never be forgotten. He was a part of the amazing Ladner community for almost all his life and will be missed by all. A celebration of his life will be held at Fisherman’s Hall on June 24th, 2022, from 1pm to 6pm. In lieu of flowers, we will have a donation box at the celebration for the Fraser Canyon Hospice Society, applied to Hospice Program Room or Patient Comforts.

HARRIS, Albert Stanley December 13, 1923 - May 24, 2022 FRANCIS, Marjorie (Schryer) In the early hours of May 24th, at age 103, Marjorie Doris Francis (nee Schryer) passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Doris, her husband Archie (2004) and her only sibling, Leonard (2017). She is survived by her four children, Catharine (Robert) Gilmour, Kenneth (Patricia, deceased), Carolann (Murray) Apps and David (Fiona) and their families. This includes 9 grandchildren: Tanya (Cam), Steven, Andrew (Kelly), Peter (Amanda), Aaron (Jenn), Rice (Cory), Melanie (Eric), Victoria (Eric) and Meredith (Kevin). And 17 great grandchildren: Finlay, William, Emmett, Theo, Aiden, Ellie, Mia, Hillary, Lila, Micah, Halle, Matteo, Maverick, Isla, Emma, Mowat and Éowyn.

Marjorie was born in Montreal, Notre Dame de Grace, Quebec on March 10, 1919. She attended Herbert Symonds Elementary School, then on to graduate from Westmount High School. In 1940, she went to church in Westmount and heard this beautiful male voice singing somewhere behind her. Curiosity got the better of her and their eyes met! This fellow, Archie Francis, was invited to join her family after evening prayer meeting. He was on compassionate leave from the war in Holland as his mother was seriously ill. A romance blossomed and they became engaged on March 17, 1940. He was posted back to Holland with the war still ongoing in Europe, so they were not married until August 16, 1945, in Westmount, Quebec.

TKACHUK, Bob June 2, 2021 "Those We Love Don’t Go Away, They Walk Beside Us Everyday, Unseen, Unheard, But Always Near, So Loved, So Missed, So Very Dear." Missing you every single day, Dad. Love always, your family xoxoxo

In 1942, Marjorie graduated with her RN from Montreal General Hospital. She joined the Shriner’s Hospital for Sick Children in Montreal then enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. In 1945, she was posted aboard the hospital ship, Letitia, enroute to Southampton. Later, deployed to the Leaston Psychiatric Hospital in southern England. While nursing wounded servicemen, Marjorie witnessed firsthand the early use of a miracle drug that would save the lives of many during WWII: Penicillin! After their marriage in 1945, they stayed one week in Montreal, then hopped aboard “The Canadian”, a cross Canada rail trip ending in Vancouver. Archie found work in the postal service, where he stayed for the next 35 years. After being blessed with four children, Marjorie returned to nursing in the geriatric field, retiring after 25 years. In 1990, Marjorie and Archie bought a condo in Ladner where they lived happily until Archie passed in 2004. Later that same year, Marjorie moved to Augustine House, where she lived for 17 years until her recent passing. She made many friends with staff and residents over the years with her winning optimism and enthusiasm. She organized the ‘Nifty Knitters’ of Augustine, a band of ladies who knitted scarves and hats for Covenant House, Union Gospel Mission and the Canadian Cancer Society. Marjorie was an exceptionally loving and supportive person who gave generously to her friends and family over the many years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, and in turn, their children.

Celebrate the lives of loved ones with your stories, photographs & tributes at legacy.com/obituaries/deltaoptimist

The family wishes to thank the staff of Augustine’s Haven House and Dr. Laurie LeBel for their kindness and compassionate care of Marjorie. They would appreciate any In Memoriam donations to be made to her favorite charity: covenanthousebc.org A Celebration of Life will be held at Cedar Park Church (5300 44 Ave), Ladner on Thursday June 9th at 1:30 pm.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear father Albert Stanley Harris Jr. Stan leaves behind his daughters Zoe (Michael) McCrystal, Leslie (John) Dart, Cori (Brent) MacPherson and Tanya (Bob) MacNeill. Stan has ten grandchildren: Jennifer, Keziah, Morgan, Tamara, Jacob, Kyle, Megan, Clayton, Lucas and Samantha. He also has sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He is predeceased by the love of his life Pauline Harris (Wilson), his father Albert Stanley (Kelly) Harris, mother Mary (Lumley) Hall, and four brothers Edgar (Greta), Les (Doreen), Dick (Germaine), and Reg (Ione). At 98, Stan is also predeceased by many others in the Harris/Roland/Lumley and Wilson clans. Dad spoke often of his grandmother, Matilda Naukana Harris Roland, as she played a great part in the raising of him and his brothers. He loved her dearly.

Stan was born at Isabella Point, Salt Spring Island. He was in the navy and served in the Second World War. Stan started fishing the coast as a very young man. It was on one of these trips that he met his wife to be, Pauline Wilson at Sunnyside Cannery. When his youngest daughter was born, Stan decided he had enough of being away, quit fishing and went to work for Delta Parks & Recreation. He was one of the first employees hired in that department. He enjoyed his work very much and we liked to hear his tales of the work he and his co-workers put in, making our town and other parts of Delta a more enjoyable and prettier place to live. He was particularly proud of the many sports fields that he helped build. He also worked as a carpenter, which included working with the team that built the shopping center that houses our Thrift Store and the iconic Delta Bakery. Stan and Pauline raised their family in Canoe Pass in our little dike house where Pauline was born. The family moved when the Fraser River flooded in 1982. They moved EAST, up the road and around the corner to 34th St., not even a mile away. EAST is the joke we made when family members moved from Canoe Pass closer to Ladner. Our hearts are broken. We love you daddy. In lieu of flowers please consider sending donations to the Kidney Foundation. https://kidney.akaraisin.com/ui/generaldonation/d onations/start Information on Celebration of Life will follow.
