Hospital Auxiliary Society donates $600,000 Funding will be used for priority equipment at Delta Hospital

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society (DHAS) has generously donated $600,000 to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation towards the purchase of critical equipment needs at Delta Hospital. This exceptional donation will support the hospital’s greatest needs across multiple departments including longterm care, laboratory services and the medical floors. “We are honoured to work with the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society to help provide the best

healthcare possible at Delta Hospital. We are incredibly grateful for this remarkable gift that will purchase critical equipment needs,” says Lisa Hoglund, executive director, Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “We look forward to continuing this important partnership with the Auxiliary as we collectively support Delta Hospital and healthcare in our community.” The Auxiliary has been providing volunteer services, patient care and comfort and funding from their entrepre-

neurial efforts to Delta Hospital since 1969. “The Auxiliary is pleased to continue our successful partnership with the Foundation,” says Cathy Bayley, president, Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society. “Every year our devoted volunteers donate countless hours to raise money for state-of-the-art equipment and provide compassionate care for patients at Delta Hospital. The Foundation ensures our volunteers are recognized and celebrated for their dedication.”

As one of B.C.’s most successful hospital auxiliaries, the DHAS has more than 300 dedicated volunteers who donate nearly 50,000 hours each year. Through their successful businesses - the Dogwood Gift Shop, Courtyard Café, the Delta Auxiliary Thrift Store and Lifeline - the Auxiliary has cumulatively raised more than $15 million towards healthcare at Delta Hospital. “I would like to sincerely thank the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society for your tremendous support to ensure that

patients at Delta Hospital have the very best patient experience,” says Cathy Wiebe, executive director, Delta and White Rock/ South Surrey Health Services and Delta and Peace Arch Hospitals. “There is strength in numbers, and we are so pleased the Auxiliary and Foundation have aligned their support to strengthen our site and to ensure the Auxiliary is recognized for their hard work, dedication, and generosity.” -Submitted by Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation

Farmer fumes as cyclist blocks passage on dike trail

Time is money, no less so in farming than in any other industry, says Brent Kelly. So during the peak of growing season when heavy farm vehicles are stalled along the dike trail in Boundary Bay Regional Park it would be great if people could keep that in mind. Kelly, and other Delta farmers, use the dike trail several times a day to move heavy equipment from one part of their farm operation to another. And mostly, that happens without incident, except for Sunday (July 17) when he was stalled for 20 minutes by a cyclist who stood and blocked the trail. “I asked him a couple of times to move, I’m in a hurry,” Kelly said Monday. But the cyclist told him to move instead. Kelly, who grows potatoes and cranberries, waited until another cyclist came along who then told the first cyclist to let the farmer through. Meanwhile, five farmworkers were also idled, waiting for the sprayer to get to the potato field. “It doesn’t happen all

the time, but it happens quite often,” said Kelly, who added there are lots of signs along the dike saying that farm vehicles have the right of way. They’re not trying to annoy people, he said. He added that farmers have been using the dike trails for more than a century and wants government to explain why farmers have to use the dike trail. He mainly accesses the dike via 96th Street. “There’s simply no other access,” he said, adding he’s reduced the time he uses the trail on weekends. “Despite what people think, farming is an industry.” He says 95 per cent of people will give them the right of way. “People need to be aware we’re in a timesensitive business,” he added. The dike trail runs from Tsawwassen to Mud Bay, and is 17 km long and about five metres wide. Clarence DeBoer, with Eagle View Farms, on 88th Street, said he has built roads on his farm allowing his vehicles to mostly avoid using the dike trail. “The vast majority of the public is good,” he said.

But it just takes one who isn’t to ruin a day for a farmer who is constantly juggling competing demands under tight time constraints. “The more you’re there (on the dike trail) the more it happens,” he said. “The weekends are brutal, the number of people on it.” Metro Vancouver’s website asks people to give farm vehicles the right of way by standing to the side, off the travelled surface, “so farmers can continue their work to produce food for all of us.” Metro Vancouver parks does rec maintenance and bylaw enforcement on the trail and has never heard of such an incident, a staff member added after an inquiry from the Optimist. “The use of the dike for farming has come long before the (recreational) part of it,” said Liberal MLA for Delta South Ian Paton, a lifelong farmer in the area. But it’s common for the public to show their frustration towards farm vehicles, Paton said. “People treat you like you’re an absolute second-class citizen because you’re driving a tractor,” said Paton.

Cooling centres ready in case a heat wave blasts Delta City completes major update of its Heat Response Plan PHIL MELNYCHUK

Contributing Writer

The City of Delta is making it easier to find a place to stay chill this year, if it turns into a sweltering summer. It has recently posted two Beat the Heat posters on its website, one of which lists locations of cooling centres where people can go if an extreme heat alert is declared. See more at: https:// www.delta.ca/beattheheat. In total, there are 14 air-conditioned city rec centres and libraries where people can go to cool off if a heat warning is issued. As well, the city’s three indoor pools, two outdoor pools and three water parks give additional and more fun ways to beat the heat. If it gets really hot, the heat warning can be upgraded to an extreme heat emergency, which will see the city activate 24-hour, pet friendly, cooling centres at Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre in North Delta, McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner and KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. During the heat dome which hit in

June 2021, Delta opened cooling centres in municipal buildings and libraries equipped with air conditioning, but none were open 24 hours a day. According to the city’s new Heat Response Plan, just late last week, Environment and Climate Change Canada will issue a heat warning when temperatures in Delta are forecast to reach 29 C, for two or more days in a row, with nightly lows not dropping below 16 C. The B.C. Heat Committee, composed of provincial agencies, can also declare an extreme heat emergency when temperatures climb above heat warning level and there’s “high certainty” that temperatures will climb day over day, for three or more days. During such emergencies, Delta’s seniors buses will be used to provide free transport to the 24-hour cooling centres. The city’s Heat Response Plan has been completely updated so that it’s consistent with B.C.’s Heat Alert and Response System, said city manager Sean McGill in an emailed response to the Optimist.

The plan also requires setting up a hotline during heat events while the city’s Beat the Heat webpage has an interactive map of the cooling centre locations. That webpage will be updated constantly during heat events, McGill added. “Provincial agencies are working on a consistent response to extreme heat events and we anticipate announcements over the next several months as plans are formalized and mitigation strategies developed,” he said. The Heat Response Plan also recognizes Delta’s varied geography, with Ladner and Tsawwassen being closer to the water and more rural, compared to North Delta which is more urban, with less green space and more concrete. That could impact decisions during an extreme heat event, “as there may be need to be a greater emphasis on mitigation in North Delta,” the plan says. A communications strategy is also part of the plan and includes using social media, the city’s webpage, posters, and reader boards and community

message boards to get out information. Donations needed Meanwhile, donations of hot weather supplies for the city’s emergency shelters, are needed in case the temperatures increase. Sunscreen, bottled water, cooling packs, Gatorade, hats and spray bottles, coolers, granola bars, juice boxes, gift cards and Freezies are all needed so they can be distributed to homeless and vulnerable people. The Homelessness Services Association of B.C. has put out the call for the supplies. Shirley Baker, with the extreme weather response working group, said that supplies will be distributed by outreach workers who will be on the lookout for those struggling outside with high temperatures. The supplies will also be given out at the city’s cooling centres. Two locations are accepting the donations; Ladner United Church, 4960 – 48th Ave., Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and New Hope Church, 11838 – 88th Ave., Tuesday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

fter a two year pandemic pause, the skies above Boundary Bay came alive once again last Saturday. The Boundary Bay Airshow returned featuring some of the best of the best pilots from across North America showcasing their talents. It was the first time that I have attended the airshow and boy was I glad I did. I, along with an estimated 10,000plus enjoyed the static displays, meeting with the pilots and the show itself. I was in awe of the talent on display and appreciated all of the hard work that went into putting the show together. Clearly by the large crowds, lots of people were excited by the return of the show. It was great to see so many families and friends on a warm summer day enjoying a great, free community event. My hat goes off to the City of Delta and Alpha Aviation for bringing this show back. I didn’t hear of too many challenges, although we did receive a letter this week from a resident who pointed out long wait times for the shuttle service. When asked, the City of Delta said they recognized those challenges and pledge to do better next year. Thanks to our readers As many of you know, your paper last week was a day late being delivered. Mechanical issues at our press in Vancouver delayed printing of our paper until Thursday night, which meant delivery took place on Friday. On Thursday and into Friday we received more than 200 calls and emails combined from readers wondering about their paper delivery. Kudos to our distribution team and our carriers for going that extra mile to get you your paper. Also thanks to all our readers for their understanding. The calls and emails show that you care about your newspaper and it’s gratifying to have your support.

Inflation is changing the way we shop and eat

I

’m passionate about butter, and consider myself a connoisseur. I think it comes from my Irish heritage. Sadly a product of the pandemic has been the decline of butter. Remember Buttergate? Due to a 15 per cent increase in demand, farmers were accused of using churned up palm fat in their feed to boost supply. Today butter tastes less like butter and is wildly expensive. A pound of no name butter will cost you $5.99 at most grocery stores, and if you are like me, you appreciate a better quality butter, which is now $9. I’m choked. How about the astonishingly high price of red meat, fresh produce, and dairy? Basically food staples are at least 25 per cent more expensive. That’s changing our buying power and our eating habits. People are switching from steak to ground beef, from fresh to frozen, and buying bulk, because it’s a little way to save. Those on fixed incomes have to eat cheap and hold back on treats. As a result the

landscape of food consumerism is changing. In Delta we are lucky to be surrounded by prolific farmers. I want to support local, but you better have deep pockets. At a recent farm stand price check, a pint of cherry tomatoes was $6, $6.50 a pound for shelling peas, $4 for a cucumber, $8 for a dozen eggs, and a bouquet of locally grown flowers was $30. That’s just not affordable for a lot of people. Understandably farmers face rising costs and weather events, which up their costs and in turn, are passed onto us.

Sticker shock at Thrifty’s and Save on Foods is making grocery shopping stressful. If there’s a buy one get one free offer you better hurry, they are going, going, gone. In this time of the perfect storm we have to get creative in our shopping. I asked for a rain check for cherries, I can’t remember the last time I did that, and it paid off, to the tune of $14. It’s not just food, our home insurance just went up. Fortis raised natural gas prices by 11 per cent July 1, and fuel prices remain high. I’m not optimistic government can roll back inflation anytime soon. This week the consumer price index will rise to eight per cent. Government has been printing money for the past three years to avoid the pain of the pandemic, and now we are paying the piper. Use the bike lanes please Editor: If no one is going to use them, then what is the point of spending all of our taxpayers’ money on new bike lanes? This happens all of the time, on Ladner Trunk Road, in East Ladner. While walking to the bus stop earlier this week, I was nearly run over by

a young person on their bike. She/he/them was riding on the sidewalk, when there was a perfectly good bike lane available, just a few feet away. Perhaps if she/he/them rode their bike in the bike lane, then it would have been that much more difficult for them, to talk on their cell phone at

the same time. Which is exactly what they were concentrating on! Another case of distracted driving? I guess so, but apparently there is nothing that can be done about it. She/he/them was not wearing a bike helmet, and did not stop to apologize. A Cameron

No need to tie up police resources Editor: I have been reading the Crime Beat for several years and I appreciate the efforts that our Delta Police makes to keep our community safe. However I do find it annoying when I read the police reports about the number of cars in

our neighbourhoods that are left unlocked and as a result valuable items such as wallets, passports, computers etc. are stolen from them…stolen because of the irresponsible behaviour of the owners. How many hours of police time has been spent over the years

dealing with incidents that could have been avoided if the owner had acted responsibly? How much has it cost Delta taxpayers over the years paying for the police time that was required to deal with the thefts that could have been avoided? Gerry Copeland

Reporting was fair and balanced Editor: Re: Ladner Willows letter (Optimist, July 7). The Red Door Housing Society was well-represented at the public hearing on June 28. Time was allowed for them to address the many concerns voiced by the Ladner community and Delta council members. Red Door

Society representatives failed to adequately respond. The “truth” is Ladner residents just need to take a walk through the Ladner Willows Housing complex at 5625 Ladner Trunk Road and then realize what type of organization allowed this degree of neglect. Then, take a drive to North

Delta, Maple Ridge and some locations in Vancouver and see the same awful living conditions run by the Red Door Housing Society. This isn’t just a Ladner problem. I think many “truths” are finally surfacing. The Optimist got it right. J. Pybus

Airshow shuttles could have been better Editor: It is wonderful that the Boundary Bay Air Show is a free event with shuttle service provided from Paterson Park. It was advertised that the shuttle would run

every 10 to 15 minutes, however, my two grandchildren and I waited 110 minutes to board the shuttle on the way there and 100 minutes to come home. Several years ago I

believe they had bigger buses. I believe the City of Delta could do a better job to ensure a more enjoyable experience for everyone. Carmen Gaylard

Thanks for all the seniors’ support Delta The following letter was sent to Delta council and copied to Delta Optimist As one gets older we begin to ponder over the things we take for granted. We are particularly thinking of services like Osteofit, Big Moves Big Gains and the senior bus. These services are

invaluable to persons with Osteoporosis and Parkinson Disease. And, the senior bus that is also available to provide rides to people to and from their classes. This is a Godsend to the caregivers. We would like to thank the City of Delta and all those involved in creating these services, and

the instructors who teach and cheerfully encourage us. I would also like to thank the senior bus dispatchers and drivers who are always patient, kind and considerate. We appreciate the efforts of all those who make life easier for us. Hans & Coralie Schellhase

The hypocrisy is deafening

Editor: Re: Not a hate crime (Optimist, editorial, July 14) I find it so unfortunate when ‘journalists’ attempt to call out people who send opinion pieces to this local newspaper in an attempt to censor their readers. Editor Ian Jacques’ recent piece asking the question “Not a Hate Crime?” is a perfect example of virtue signaling that divides our community more than it brings them together. He speaks to the importance of having open conversations, but only when it pushes his own agenda. There is

no interest in having a more in-depth conversation with the people who wrote him personally objecting to his previous articles. No, instead it would be more advantageous to call them out in the hopes that they never express their opinions in public again. I firmly disagree with the actions of vandalism regarding both the Pride flag and the Ladner Heron, however, neither of the incidents are hate crimes. Since Mr. Jacques failed to do the research himself, I will answer the question he presented. A hate crime is: “everyone

who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation, willfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group.” As you can see by Canada’s Criminal Code definition, these acts of vandalism are not covered under Canadian legislation. It is my opinion that Mr. Jacques should be able to openly write about whatever he chooses, I do not however, believe he should be shaming or attempting to censor other individuals who think differently than he does. The hypocrisy is deafening. Joe Hughes

A call to action to do better Editor: With respect to the letter you published titled “Anti-Racism Video Not Needed”, I am disappointed that as a professional editor, you felt like this was a message worth reading. We can all agree that “Mr. Flippoff”s words were terribly uninformed and ignorant. In fact, I found his letter to be real-

ly harmful, irresponsible and disrespectful to the thousands of BIPOC community members of Delta who had to read this in their local newspaper. I honestly question your critical thinking skills and your responsibility as an editor and ask just how you found this letter was appropriate to publish in anyway?

Accountability is necessary and mandatory if you want to be an ally. The Delta Optimist needs to take responsibility for its role in perpetuating hateful ignorance and spreading harmful, racist rhetoric at a community level. This is a formal call to action to do better. Charlie RedFeather

Editor: There is a municipal election coming up. Sadly, so far, we have very few people showing an interest in candidacy. Civic politics is one area of government where we can actually make a difference. Our senior governments have shown little ability to deal with climate crisis. However, the city of Vancouver has shown great strides at setting policy and addressing climate issues. Delta council needs climate leaders like those in Vancouver. Youthful people that are willing to stand up for our community and their future. We live in a very diverse area that includes the Fraser River, and some of the best farm-

land in Canada. All of these are endangered. There are a number of projects proposed that will seriously affect the Fraser and the Juan de Fuca straight. Our salmon and orcas are threatened, and the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds is threatened. Our farmland and farmers have also seen a lot of strain from climate change in recent years. All of our habitat and species are a part of the life forms that sustain us, keep our environment healthy and provide us with sustenance. Shortterm planning and thinking will only increase the stress on all aspects of our community. We have witnessed disastrous floods, fires and a heat dome that have all affect-

ed our health, well-being and our economy. We need the kind of leadership that will ensure the health and welfare of our community while keeping our economy strong and our food sources safe. The only way to achieve this is to elect progressive people with an eye to the future. People that are committed to work their way through difficult decisions that balance all aspects of our community. Delta, like Vancouver, needs to be aggressive in our management of the environment we are blessed with. Please, consider this task; be a part of our future, get involved, get elected! Park washroom replacements come with big price tag Many of Delta’s washrooms and buildings are in excess of 50-years-old SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s a hefty price tag, but it’s an unavoidable cost when it comes to new outdoor public park washrooms in the City of Delta. A recent story in the Optimist about council’s approval to award a $597,671 contract to replace the washroom facility at Ladner Lions Park raised some eyebrows, prompting people to question the cost. The awarded contract was the lowest of the six bids received as the highest came in at $959,309. The replacement has been designed with four universal singleoccupancy stalls, with accessibility features and robust construction materials to minimize damage from vandalism, a Delta staff report notes. Noting washrooms are designed and built to last up to 50 years, Parks, Recreation and Culture Director Carmen Gonzalez told the Optimist it’s the industry cost to build such structures. “These are essentially industrial, institutionallike buildings. They’re built to be very robust for vandalism and tend to have a very long lifespan. It can be upwards of 50 years that these facilities are in operation. They really have to have that robust, resistant construction with mostly stainless steel toilets and sinks and concrete block

construction. Because of how robust and industrial those facilities are, unfortunately, this is the industry pricing,” said Gonzalez. On top of the construction costs, an additional expense includes the design. Council last year awarded a contract for the design and construction administration of new washroom buildings at Memorial Park and at Ladner Lions Park, a contract costing $120,151. The total cost including construction for the projects was estimated at around $1.1 million. Gonzalez noted the cost also depends on the size of the new facility, and the size is largely dependent on the usage of the parks they are located in. Next on the list of replacements is the washroom facility at Memorial Park, a project listed in next year’s capital plan that must still get council’s go-ahead. A condition assessment was conducted by a consultant in 2020 for 33 city park washrooms and field houses. That assessment recommended the replacement of the washroom buildings at Ladner Lions Park and Memorial Park as they were reported to be at the end of their lifecycles. The report also notes that the design and construction of other park washrooms, including

the ones at Cromie Park and Gunderson Park, is proposed for subsequent years. A previous report to council on the state of the city’s park washrooms notes, “These older facilities do not have the ventilation systems that are required by today’s modern building code. The floors are stained through years of use and emit odours that are embedded in the old concrete flooring. Many of the sites are not accessible for those with mobility limitations.” In addition to the washroom replacements, other new park buildings also carry significant price tags. Last fall, for example, council agreed to award a $138,660 contract for architectural design services for the new fieldhouse building that will be constructed at the North Delta Track and Field facility. The current projected construction budget for the two-level, 4,000-square-foot project is just over $1 million. Also last year, a $2.3 million contract was awarded for the construction of the Winskill Park fieldhouse. It will serve as the new clubhouse for the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club and provide space for other community user groups. That cost is in addition to the more than $100,000 already spent for architectural services.

COVID-19 vaccination low for kids 11 and under in Delta Number of COVID cases in hospitals is climbing SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The B.C. government last week announced that approximately 208,000 eligible infants and children between six months and four years of age in the province will soon be able to receive vaccine protection against COVID-19. Following Health Canada’s approval of the Moderna vaccine, and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendation, regional health authorities will start offering the vaccine at clinics throughout the province on Aug. 2. Parents or guardians seeking vaccinations for

their eligible children under the age of five can register them in the provincial Get Vaccinated system now. Once registration is complete, parents or guardians will be invited to book a vaccination at a clinic in their community. But just how many parents will have their children in that age range get immunized? It might not be that high if the BC Centre for Disease Control’s (BCCDC) latest immunization numbers for children in the five to 11 age group is an indication. According to the BCCDC’s numbers, as of July 11, the immunization rate for Delta kids five to 11 getting a first dose was 66 per cent.

That is compared to 96 per cent in the 12 to 17 age group and 97 per cent for Delta residents ages 18 to 49, and 95 per cent for residents 50 and over. The vaccination rate for kids five to 11 getting a first dose varied by a wide range among Fraser Health communities with Burnaby leading the way at 70 per cent, while Surrey was just 55 per cent and Hope was at the bottom at 34 per cent. As far as kids five to 11 getting a second dose in Fraser Health, Delta was at just 52 per cent, while Surrey and Abbotsford were 40 and 28 per cent respectively. Hope remained at the bottom at just 21 per cent. The numbers were

1

even lower for Interior and Northern Health communities. According to the BCCDC’s latest numbers released July 14, the overall number of COVID19 cases in hospitals climbed to 426 as an upward trend continues. According to the BC COVID-19 Modelling Group, the next Omicron wave has started in B.C. and across Canada and is being caused by a faster rate of spread by the BA.5 variant. The number of infections and severe cases leading to hospitalization are expected to rise through July. The height of the BA.5 wave and its impact are challenging to predict, says the Modelling Group.

Using Income to Rapidly Reduce Your Mortgage Debt Jeffrey Greenfeld, CFP®, EPC, RIS Investment Advisor, iA Private Wealth Inc. If you are like most Canadians, you manage your finances by doing two things: depositing your income into a savings account and borrowing when you need through mortgages and lines of credit. Typically, you have some funds left over at the end of the month after paying your bills. Unfortunately, this strategy usually means receiving low or no interest on deposits, while paying high interest on what you borrow. A better strategy is to make every dollar you earn pay down your debts and simply borrow only when you need it. In other words, putting your hard-earned income to work every day. A good example of this can be applied to mortgages. Recently, an investment client of mine told me her mortgage was up for renewal. She was worried about still having a mortgage as she got closer to retirement and that she would not be able to afford some much-needed home renos. Knowing this, I suggested she switch her mortgage to a multi-purpose ‘borrowing and chequing’ account Manulife One. After running the numbers, I showed Jane how she could save around $80,000 in mortgage interest and be mortgage-free 11 years sooner with a Manulife One account. By opening up a Manulife One account and consolidating her debts, Jane learned she could: - save thousands in interest; - be debt-free years sooner; - enjoy financial flexibility; and - simplify everyday banking This strategy allows Jane to use what she owns to reduce what she owes. It gave her peace of mind that she could retire without a huge mortgage while still having access to funds for renos and even pay for some much-deserved holidays.

Delta Pride

Catching up with the Delta Pride Society DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Pride has certainly come a long way in Delta, says Delta Pride Society member Gillian McLeod. When she first moved to Delta in the mid-2000s, she recalls wondering if and where other queer families were within the city. So after some pondering, she and her friend Barb Thomas – who is one of the original owners of the queer bookstore Little Sister’s in Vancouver – put an ad in the paper in 2007 calling for “Rainbow Families” to meet at a Ladner restaurant. “As my wife at the time and I walked toward [the restaurant] that day with our kids, we were sure nobody was going to be there ... We got in and we, [the Rainbow Families], had taken over the whole restaurant. There were 40 people there,” says McLeod. Of course, there’s always been queer people living in Delta, but it wasn’t until 2018 that the Delta Pride Society (DPS) officially formed and kicked off with their first-ever Pride Picnic. The DPS will host their fourth annual Pride Picnic on Aug. 21 at Memorial Park in Ladner. But since catching up with the Optimist last summer, the DPS has certainly accumulated a long list of accom-

plishments and proof of their steady growth. To name a few, they expanded to seven board members, hosted a virtual 2SLGBTQ+ issues progress report event and participated in educational opportunities at Ladner May Days and Southlands Market days. “It’s been super encouraging to see that the majority of folks we connect with or come in contact with really are supportive, and they want to ensure that folks in the community are able to live their lives, to be who they are,” says Lydia Elder, treasurer of the DPS. In addition to their regular community engagement through social media, they also attended the City of Delta’s Pride flag raising ceremonies and worked alongside them to create Pride month promotion videos and collaborate on the Pride banners displayed around the city. “We’re very, very grateful to the city and the mayor and council. It’s quite heartwarming, and basically mindblowing, a bit, [how much support we’ve received],” says president John Darras. And just recently, the DPS hosted Super Gay Bingo nights in both South and North Delta. Currently, they’re working on creating an educational toolkit to go with

Delta Police have strong relationships with our diverse community A/SGT. KATIE GARCIA AND CONST. LIZ ROSS

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r s

Ask any police officer why they submitted their application, and they will probably all tell you the same thing: to help people. All people. The Delta Police Department (DPD) has strong relationships with our city’s diverse populations because we work hard to build trust and foster communication with everyone. The LGBTQ2S+ community is no different. How do we know that? Well, we’re members of that community, too. In fact, for the two of us, “helping people” often hits home on a much deeper level. As we co-wrote this article and shared our experiences both as Delta Police Officers and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, we landed on a common theme, we are proud.

We are proud of how far we have come; proud of all we have endured getting where we are; proud to serve our community; and proud to be doing it all while being our true, authentic selves. We are proud LGBTQ2S+ members, and thankful to work for the DPD, which has valued us both for who we are, from day one, and truly sees us. You may not interact with us much in your day-to-day routine, but perhaps you reported a theft or distracted driver to us one time. On a bad day, you might have encountered us at a car accident or break and enter to your home. You’ve likely encountered one of us without even knowing we’re members of the LGBTQ2S+ community. That’s okay – it’s not about us. But we want you to know that we’re here. So this year, we’re getting more vocal. Because despite the

many forward strides our profession and country have made toward acceptance and equality, there is still, clearly, much work to be done. The simple fact of the matter is that LGBTQ2S+ youth still report higher levels of depression than their peers; are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their counterparts; and experience instances of in-person and online bullying at higher rates than Cis youth. But it’s not just youth who are at risk. As police officers, we continually hear from members of the LGBTQ2S+ community who are struggling with bullying, harassment, and their mental health. We want to do everything we can to help, which starts with us speaking out, but we recognize the need to do more - and we need to do it together. Each of

Pride Profile: Queer, South Asian visual artist Jag Nagra DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Jag Nagra is a queer, South Asian visual artist and mother. She is vice-chair of the Punjabi Market Collective and has been a member of Sher Vancouver since 2008. Nagra is also in Emergence: Out of the Shadows, a feature documentary from Delta-based Sher Films produced by Alex Sangha and directed by Vinay Giridhar. This transcription has been edited for clarity and conciseness. Can you tell me about yourself? I’m a visual artist. I like doing largescale art installations, and I focus a lot of my practice on themes I didn’t grow up seeing. I try to put a modern spin on Indian textiles, Indian patterns and that classic imagery. But if you saw my portfolio over five years ago, there was nothing in it that would make you think a South Asian woman drew this. Now, I’m very inspired because I feel a sense of pride and connection. For the first time in my life, I feel proud of my roots, and it’s been a fun journey to reconnect with myself. I’m also a mother. My wife and I have two children. I think my form of queer activism often comes in just being visible, showing people that we’re like

DELTA PRIDE!

everybody else. I think that helps bridge some of the fear or ignorance people often have towards queer people. Why did you originally get involved in your work as an artist? When COVID hit, I found myself coming to my desk with a pen and a stack of paper, and I just started getting my thoughts out, drawing things. I tend to draw based on what’s happening around me. It’s therapeutic for me to have that release and to see people connecting with the artwork – it’s really powerful. With my art now, I tend to draw themes that empower women, or have empowered women in them, and I blend the different intersections of my identity – being queer, being a woman, being brown. Those three things are often not celebrated, especially together, so I want people to see my art and feel a sense of strength. What do you wish more people knew about the queer community? There’s a lot of ‘othering’ that happens to us, and you never quite feel a sense of belonging in the mainstream. When you’re in the closet, it’s because you’re shoved into it. Nobody wants to be there, but you’re stuck in there. So, the more of us that you see in public, the more confidence people have to also be themselves.

From the Merchants at Tsawwassen Commons TENANT

Tru Wilson, 19, is a trans woman living in Delta who is known for her trans rights activism and advocacy work across Canada. She’s currently taking a gap-year after graduating high school last year and is enjoying a more relaxed approach to young adulthood. Can you tell me about yourself? I’m a really creative and artistic person. My mom credits herself in spawning that because she’s a painter and an artist and I grew up watching her. I like to draw, create original characters, digital art, play video games and I’m a very extroverted person, too, so I love hanging out with my friends. I also attend a lot of anime conventions and cosplay. I used to cosplay a lot when I was a teenager, and I would upload photos and videos to social media and would attend conventions with my friends. That’s led into a love of makeup and experimenting with clothes and fashion. What are you up to these days? I’ve tried to settle into a more relaxed life -- unlike my more radical tween and teen years when I was doing a lot of speaking engagements and activism.

It was great going to events, meeting amazing people and telling my story, but being an activist at such a young age, it didn’t really leave a lot of room for me to be young. So, I’m starting to define who I am now as a young adult, which is fun. Because of my bottom surgery, I decided to take a gap-year after I graduated high school last year. Before my surgery, I was very insecure and closed off with my physicality. My mom has said it’s like I’ve turned into a new person after my surgery. It’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I can be more of myself and be comfortable in my own skin. It’s been an incredible life changer. What do you wish more people knew about the queer community? I think it’s really important for people to know how important gender-affirming surgeries are for trans people. It’s not a rash decision sort-of-thing, it took five years for me to get a surgery date. It’s not as if these things can happen willy-nilly, and I think there’s a misconception that it’s really easy and accessible for trans people to get surgeries, but it’s not. I firmly believe in educating young kids about LGBTQ+ issues because without that knowledge and information, they can form incorrect opinions.

Ladner’s TikTok-famous husbands capture hilarious, hectic reality of 35-day road trip DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

If there’s one thing Darcy Michael and Jeremy Baer can take away from their 35-day road trip across America, it’s that, under no circumstances, will you actually use the portable barbecue you originally insisted on packing. In late May, the Ladnerbased TikTok-famous husbands – who are now nearly at three million followers – embarked on an impromptu road trip with their dog Yuma to Indianapolis to watch friends race in the Indy 500. Packed in their truck, the three headed out on the open road and, of course, recorded the shenanigans they got into along the way for their latest YouTube series, “Darcy & Jer Do America.” “Time is a very valuable currency, and COVID taught us that we want more of it together,” says Michael. “Instead of

being in a 2,000-square foot house, [we thought], ‘let’s put ourselves in a four-square foot environment for 35 days with a panting golden retriever behind us.’” The trip was full of laughs, luxurious dog parks and long nights of video-editing, but it also highlighted how much fun the two still have together after 18 years of marriage. It also emphasized how the two have recently reversed roles since Baer left his corporate job in January to become a full-time content creator with Michael, who is also a comedian and actor. “If you would’ve asked me last year if I ever saw myself leaving work to be an idiot on the Internet, I would have laughed in your face,” says Baer. Their TikTok content centres around queerness, body positivity, gardening, parenting and living with Michael’s ADHD. On their account,

Michael now endearingly refers to Baer as the “house husband”, in addition to his longstanding title of “ADHD wrangler.” Together, they’re trying to find a balance between content and work commitments and simply living their lives. Stepping into longer-form content, like their Darcy & Jer Do America series, could be one of the ways they take a step back from creating content all day, every day, they say. But both continue to be astonished at how large their platform has become, nearly doubling their number of followers on TikTok since last year when they spoke to the Optimist. “As an artist, I’ve wanted to reach people and make them feel good for a long time. It’s nice to see the comments reiterating that we’re doing that ... I think it’s cool that we are able to show young queer people that it’s okay to dream about

How the City of Delta and the Delta School District are making their spaces safer for queer folks

Mayor George Harvie, and Delta teachers Trevana Spilchen and Toby Mundy share their efforts DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

When it comes to making their spaces safer for members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, both the City of Delta and the Delta School District are making changes from the inside. Here’s exactly what they’ve been up to since last year’s Pride month. In a written reply to the Optimist, Mayor George Harvie highlighted that the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity, Inclusion & Anti-Racism is currently providing guidance on developing a corporate equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) work plan based on an internal audit they did. In March this year, the city also contracted Vancouver consulting company TransFocus, who specialize in gender inclusion practices, to train city employees on how to respectfully interact with transgender folks and using pronouns, he writes. And, as previously reported by the Optimist, the city also put Pride banners up around the community in collaboration with the Mayor’s Task Force again and released a video series

where community members spoke on what Pride means to them. “I am so proud of Delta and all those who help to create a welcome and safe space for everyone. As mayor, I will always champion and support the LGBTQ2S+ community, not just for Pride month, but 365 days a year,” writes Harvie. This past school year, the district’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Inclusivity Coordinator Trevana Spilchen – who is also a teacher at North Delta’s Delview Secondary – put their guideline for supporting trans and gender diverse students into use, after creating it last year. The guideline is meant to teach teachers and administrators the basics of creating safer spaces for gender queer students, as well as how to navigate specific situations that could arise. Spilchen also visited about a dozen Delta elementary schools to chat with students about SOGI, inclusion and allyship. “At the end of a presentation, [a student] walked up and handed me this little piece of paper, and it was a drawing of me ...

To our LGBTQIA+2S family, friends, and community members: we love and value you. You are beloved image-bearers of God. We are thankful for the ways in which you embody the beautiful diversity of Creation. You are welcome here.

The City of Delta put up Pride banners on light standards throughout the community. On it, it said, ‘I’ve been looking forward to this for a couple weeks ... and today, I feel really seen,” they say. Toby Mundy – who is the teacher-sponsor of Seaquam Secondary’s Queer-Straight Alliance (QSA) and the high school’s SOGI coordinator – highlights how administrators took a more “proactive” approach to supporting their 2SLGBTQ+ students

this school year. At Seaquam, they installed a second gender-neutral bathroom, as requested by students in the QSA, with Spilchen’s advice. They also advised on the best and safest way to go about making menstrual-products available within these bathrooms, which was decided to be within an identified stall, as opposed to on the wall outside the stalls. “I think that confi-

dence and certainty about wanting to take action ... and knowing that there are staff members who are willing to navigate that process with them – I didn’t realize how much of a dam bursting that could be for students. That was one of the logs holding back the water,” says Mundy. Additionally, this coming school year, the district and its stakeholders will be reviewing the

existing SOGI procedure that was created in 2012. “Students were really instrumental in wanting their voices heard and to be represented, and the push for it came from students. They were very much involved in the creation of that original procedure, and they will be involved again in the upcoming review,” says Cathryn Tucker, the district’s director of communications.

23 studentscome through DPD summer Academy PHIL MELNYCHUK

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

One of the most challenging days from this summer’s Delta Police Student Police Academy happened in the second week when 23 trainees fired police service Glocks at the range. The students then ran through a high-stress obstacle course that involved using pepper spray, moving a bag that simulated rescuing a person -- then had to slow down and answer simple math questions -- all while the adrenaline was still pumping. That’s when Macy McLarenMcAvoy learned about the high demands of police work. “You have to be focused the whole time because you don’t want to screw up. Because if you screw up, something bad can happen, like something really bad. Like you’re holding a gun. You have so many things in your pocket. It’s a huge responsibility to keep up the profile of the police officer as well,” said McLaren-

Did you know?

McAvoy, a recent grad of North Delta’s Seaquam Secondary. After a two-year pandemic hiatus during which the academy was offered virtually, Delta Police resumed the hands-on course which involves highschool students participating in two weeks of intensive instruction about police work. Students learned about police and the law, took the police officer physical ability test, marching and drill, learned about the canine unit and emergency response, major crime investigations, self-defence, baton and the use of force. Twenty-three students who graduated from that course, now have a step up on a possible job if they decide on a career in law enforcement. Staff Sgt James Sandberg said police regularly encounter situations that require adrenaline pounding action one moment -- and calm, restraint and compassion the next. Officers can be involved in a foot pursuit one moment then

minutes later can be going to a false alarm call,” he said. “Policing can go from zero to a hundred, back to zero, in a very short period of time,” he explained. “You have to be able to bring yourself back down.” McLaren-McAvoy had been considering a career as a police officer but after taking the course, she’s now certain she’ll be applying when she completes her two years at Douglas College. After completing the course, McLaren-McAvoy said what most surprised her was the amount of teamwork the job requires. “The thing I noticed with the constables is they have such a deep bond with each other. I don’t think I realized just how much of a community the police department is,” she said. Sandberg said offering the course is a way of reaching out to the community, and is also a way to recruit new constables in an economic environment with drastic labour short-

Staff Sgt. James Sandberg says the Student Police Academy is good way to reach out to the community. Macy MclarenMcAvoy graduated this week from the two-week program. ages. Those shortages have been amplified by the start-up Surrey Police Service which so far has lured about 25 Delta officers to the new department. Currently, seven officers who are now serving with DPD have previously attended the Student Police Academy. That shows the department is community based, he added. “It’s a way of making us a bit

more transparent . . . which is good, to build public trust and accountability,” said Sandberg. Law enforcement in recent years has been challenged by “high-profile events that don’t necessarily flatter law enforcement,” Sandberg added. It takes a lot of work and time to build public trust and just one event to erode it. “And it’s not lost on us,” he said.

Moving Forward Counselling receives $5,000 grant

Moving Forward Counselling is a recent recipient of a $5,000 grant from the Delta Community Foundation. The funding allows Moving Forward

Counselling to offer much needed mental health counselling services to anyone in need regardless of age, race, identified gender, finances, religion, or location.

“We are really pleased to offer support to much needed mental health support initiatives in Delta,” said grant chairperson Ammen Dhillon. “Working on the front-

lines, I have witnessed how the pandemic has deepened our awareness about the impact that our mental health has on our overall well-being. It’s really encouraging to see

our community acknowledge the central importance of mental health by allocating more resources towards learning about it and finding new ways to manage it.” Gail Martin, president of the Delta Community Foundation said this is another example of the diverse and important initiatives that the foundation supports to make Delta a healthier community. “We support causes that range from mental health, to food insecurity programs, to BC Guide Dogs. All of these organizations contribute to the wonderful community we

live in,” said Martin. Moving Forward Counselling offers free short-term and affordable long-term counselling options to underserved communities across Canada via in-person, telephone, and online platforms. They welcome clients to a judgment-free environment where they can get the help they need regardless of age, race, identified gender, financial situation, or location. Be careful what you ask for More often than not, it is true that what we ask for, will in some way be answered. Granted, what we ask for is not always what we get. Often it is some version of what we ask for. Finding out what my wife wants for her birthday or Christmas can be a similar challenge. In the weeks leading up to the event I will often ask what she would like to do for either of these. Most of the time the response is, “Oh I don’t know.” I have come to learn that this phrase does not necessarily translate into her being stuck on ideas. More often than not, she has a very clear sense of what she wants, only she does not believe she will get it. Essentially, she has learned not to

set herself up for failure or disappointment. Too many birthdays and Christmas’s have come and gone from her youth of carefully describing and articulating exactly what she would like, only to receive the knock off version or some other toy that is close, but not quite what she

asked for. So, most of the time, by the time her birthday and Christmas rolls around, she has already purchased, on her own, what she really wants. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus says, “ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you” (Luke 11: 9). Jesus invites us to bring before God our desires, our hopes, and dreams. These are in part the fragments of our lives that matter to us. Because they matter to us, they too matter to God. But we should be careful about what we ask because God does listen and God will always respond, just not always in the way we want or expect; but always in ways we need.

ADVICE FROM THE

professionals What is the difference between a variable rate vs an adjustable rate mortgage?

Market volatility makes me nervous. What should I do to stop worrying? If you are nervous about your investments, you’re not alone. Here’s my advice: Filter out the media noise. Dramatic news makes good headlines, but in reality volatility is normal and healthy. Successful investing involves using the “ups” and “downs” to your advantage. Ensure your portfolio is well structured. Your financial advisor should customize an investment portfolio unique to Doug Smith your circumstances, carefully considering your specific BA I CIM® needs for wealth protection, tax efficient income and Financial Advisor comfort with risk. Benefit from a knowledgeable and experienced financial advisor. If you have doubts, consider getting a second opinion. Trust and confidence should be the foundation of your relationship with your advisor. Doug Smith is a Financial Advisor with Raymond James Ltd. While both options are tied to your lenders prime rate, a variable rate mortgage (or VRM) will not change your payment with increases or decreases in the lenders prime rate. Up or down, your payment will not change unless prime reaches a certain rate. This is also commonly called the trigger rate.

An adjustable rate mortgage (or ARM) will see the payment increase/decrease with changes to the lenders prime rate. Both VRM and ARM mortgage options have their pros and cons. A qualified mortgage professional can determine which is the best options for you!

My friends keep telling me about how they sold scrap gold jewellery to you and how great your gold testing machine is. Can you explain what type of machine and how it works?

How can technology make my life easier at the dentist?

We have a Niton Precious Metal Analyzer. This machine uses X-Ray technology to determine the purity of your gold, silver and platinum. Most dealers use an acid and need to estimate how much gold disappears, after the acid is applied, to determine the Karat. Our machine tells us and you, because we allow Jim Richardson, you to watch, the exact karat of all the gold we need owner to test. Most people who do watch are fascinated and very impressed with the gold tester. I remember a lady coming in with a bag of gold nuggets. She was told that they were 14k. Our machine showed that they were 22k and she received over $1,000 more than our competition offered. Western Coin & Stamp Another gentleman was told that his 6960 No. 3 Road, Richmond, BC V6Y 2C5 bracelet was 14k and we showed him www.westerncoinsandstamps.net that it was the 18k he thought it was. westerncns@telus.net

Technology plays a big role in our lives today and is changing at a rapid rate. People come to the dentist dreading experiences that have happened to them in the past. Just coming in for a routine hygiene visit can cause a lot of anxiety for a person. We at Riverside Dental try to do our best at making your experience at our office the most comfortable as possible. X-rays that were a pain to have done are now all digital. This allows the sensor to be very small and comfortable for our clients. With the help of our digital scanner, impressions Dr. Raj Dhiman no longer involve any material in the mouth and down the 604-946-9588 throat. We simply just scan everything that needs any lab work. With this technology crowns can even be completed in one appointment as well. Our Primescan allows us at Riverside Dental to even be able to design future crowns and veneers to the shape and size you’ve always wanted without even touching the teeth. Mock-ups can then be digitally fabricated and placed in your mouth to allow you to see and feel how things can potentially look. Dental freezing anesthetic can be administered digitally and pain free, without the need of a traditional syringe! Technology Is 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta making a big difference and we take pride in making smile@ladnerdentist.com your experience as pleasant as possible.

Here are the five most important points in creating a good ad: 1. Lead with a strong headline. It should be interesting and try not to be too cliché. Is not everyone tired of all the “Best Kept Secrets” that are in every marketplace today? 2. Use a graphic element that ties into the product(s) being sold and that will attract attention. 3. Make sure your ad copy describes at least one benefit for the potential customer. Why should they buy that product now and/or why should they buy it at all? 4. There must be a call to action. Create a sense of urgency so the reader has a reason to act on the information in the ad. 5. Tell them who you are and where you are. Design a strong logo and use a font relevant to the business you are in. Always include your address, website, phone number etc.

Golfers raise over $10,000 to help the fight against ALS PHIL MELNYCHUK

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Local golfers have done some marathon golfing raising more than $10,000 on behalf of those who are struggling with ALS. Both the Beach Grove Golf Club and Kings Links By The Sea, joined in this year’s Golfathon for ALS. Each club had a fundraising goal of $5,000. At Kings Links, Andrew Hogan, Mike White and Brad

Newell golfed a total of 112 combined holes on July 11. Their efforts resulted in $5,450 being raised. White, who is head professional at the course, said it’s the first time the club hosted the event and it went well. Hogan did most of the golfing, hitting 91 of that total, White noted. He added they hope to do bigger and better next year. “You get most of the day off to play golf,” White said. Most of the donations were

received online through the Golfathon website but there were also cash boxes at the club where people chipped in. On June 16, four golfers at Beach Grove Golf Club well exceeded the $5,000 fundraising goal. Brent Derrheim, Jordan Rodda, Jon Hwang and Cameron Bartling golfed a total of 468 holes. And that brought in $7,890 for the cause. But with later donations, the total is probably just under $10,000, Derrheim said. The club has been participating for

at least 15 years. “The reason why we continue to do it, I lost my fatherin-law this spring to ALS,” and other members have lost family, so it really hits home,” said Derrheim. He added that Rodda also lost a family member to the disease. The ALS Society of B.C. has been a great partner, he said. The ALS Society of B.C. supports patients and their families. One way it does so is by providing an equipment loan

program to help with mobility. Another goal is the eventual creation of a research centre, the ALS Centre at UBC. The ALS Society of B.C. has pledged to raise $20 million for that project. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neuromuscular disease and is characterized by a progressive degeneration of motor nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

ADVICE FROM THE

professionals

I have been wearing dentures for many years and they are to the point that my gums are extremely sore and red: what can I do? Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Generally a second and or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before proceeding to the construction of new dentures. New dentures promote a healthy clean fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

Thank you for this great question. Shingles is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox in children (herpes zoster). Most people are carriers of the virus and we do not know why some people get shingles and some do not. The best protection against developing a shingles infection is vaccination against the virus. The vaccination is indicated for individuals 50 and older and is a 2-dose series given 2-6 months apart. The vaccine is usually well tolerated with minimal side effects. It is available without prescription and is NOT covered by the BC PharmaCare program. Some private insurance companies may cover the vaccine with a prescription from your health care provider. Ask us for details. “Your Health – Our Priority” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.

I feel like I have a lot of earwax; what’s the best way to clean the inside of my ears at home?

My purged items are still in my home, what should I do?

You may feel tempted to reach for a cotton swab, but please don’t! Earwax provides lubrication and antibacterial protection for your ears. When you chew or move your jaw, you help move old earwax out of the ear canal to the ear opening, where it usually dries and falls out. Earwax is both normal and beneficial! Sometimes this is unavoidable, since wearing hearing aids or earplugs also tends to prevent earwax from moving out of the ear and can cause a blockage. So many people make great progress with organizing different spaces in their homes and have made an effort to really consider what items are important enough to keep but then are left with all the purged items meant for the charity shop piled up in the garage or worse…in the back of their car for weeks. Part of the decision-making process was likely helped JENNIFER by knowing someone in need would scoop up a good ILLSLEY-HALL deal and your charity of choice would benefit too. How will B.C.’s marine LNG opportunity contribute to a lower-carbon future? By Mike Leclair - Vice President, Major Projects and LNG, FortisBC Each year, thousands of vessels travel along shipping routes making global trade possible. The most recent estimates included in the International Maritime Organization’s Fourth Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Study 2020 show that GHG emissions of total shipping have increased from 977 million tonnes in 2012 to 1,076 million tonnes in 2018, mostly due to a continuous increase of global maritime trade. With global shipping emitting more GHG emissions than all of Canada combined, there’s a strong opportunity for liquefied natural gas (LNG) from our province to contribute to emissions reductions and improve the quality of the air we breathe every day. Demand for LNG as a marine fuel has accelerated over the last decade. More than 300 LNG ships are already in operation worldwide with over 2,500 expected to be ordered by 2028 according to a forecast from DNV,

FortisBC uses the term renewable and low carbon gas to refer collectively to the low carbon and carbon neutral gases or fuels that the utility can acquire under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Clean Energy) Regulation, which are: Renewable Natural Gas (RNG or biomethane), hydrogen, synthesis gas (from wood waste) and lignin. Depending on their source, all of these gases have differing levels of lifecycle carbon intensity. All gases would meet the proposed B.C. carbon intensity threshold for low-carbon gases of 36.4 g CO2e per megajoule set out in the 2021 B.C. Hydrogen Strategy.

It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).

Tsawwassen teen’s perseverance takes him to this weekend’s B.C. Summer Games

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

As far is Eli Teichgräber is concerned, a 10-hour bus ride beats the heck out of another visit to the hospital. The 15-year-old from Tsawwassen is headed this morning for the B.C. Summer Games in Prince George where he will be among 2,300 athletes from 170 communities competing in 18 different sports. Teichgräber not only prevailed through tryouts to earn a spot on the Vancouver Coastal (Zone 5) boys soccer team, he overcame a life-altering condition that kept him off the pitch for months. After coming through South Delta United from the age of five, Teichgräber took his game to the Metro level with Surrey FC back in 2019. He enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, notching 36 goals and 10 assists, helping his team come within a point of winning the title. The Coastal Cup playdowns were next until COVID-19 wiped out the balance of the season. It also coincided with Teichgräber’s life changing forever. His skin tone had suddenly turned yellow resulting in numerous visits to the hospital. It finally took one of the top specialists at B.C. Children’s to determine Teichgräber had Autoimmune Hepatitis, a liver inflammation that occurs when the body’s immune system turns against liver cells. Being highly vulnerable and the pandemic still raging, he spent his entire

Grade 8 year at home and off the field too. It wasn’t until last September he was ready to return to class and resume his soccer activities too thanks to an anti-rejection medication he will need to take for the rest of his life. “Everyone had gone past me, I was way behind at that point,” said Teichgräber of his soccer career. “I had to work extra hard.” Even with his new medication causing soreness in his joints, Teichgräber has been able to persevere to rejoin his Surrey FC teammates and earn a spot on the Zone 5 team that also features talent from the North Shore and Vancouver. Now he hopes to be returning home on Sunday with a B.C. Games medal. “It’s going to be fun,” Teichgräber smiled. “We have been practicing together and getting to know each other more. We will be ready.” Here are the rest of the Delta athletes headed to Prince George: Athletics: Nicolas Burrows, Enid Gardiya, Makaio Mayer, Henry Nestmann, Smyan Billing. It was a dream debut for the Delta Coastal Selects at B.C. Soccer’s Provincial “A” Cup Championships. The girls rep team culminated a fantastic inaugural season by capturing the U13 title with a come-frombehind 2-1 win over league rival Port Coquitlam Reign in the final played on July 3 at South Surrey Athletic Park. Playing its first season at 11 aside, the Division One squad was formed in the spring of 2021 through a partnership between South Delta United Soccer Club and North Delta Football Club after the B.C. Coastal Soccer League made the decision to eliminate the Metro Division to reduce the number of tiers, starting with the incoming U13s. The magical run included going unbeaten in regulation in 42 consecutive matches, dating back to mid-September. Along the way Delta captured the Richmond Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament, the Surrey Mayor’s Cup Tournament and the Okanagan Icebreaker Tournament. The provincial final provided an opportunity to avenge a heartbreaking loss in penalty kicks

team’s accomplishment this weekend will be with them forever. I couldn’t be prouder of this group.” While the team relied heavily on offence throughout the season, scoring 147 goals and conceding just 23 in 49 games played, it was their rock-solid defending and three game-winning goals from forward Leah Venier that secured the Provincial Cup. In round robin play, Delta showcased its defensive abilities with blank sheets against Kelowna United HP (1-0), North Shore Renegades (0-0) and New West Athletica FC (1-0) to book a place in the championship game. The girls then dug deep to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit against the Reign. Megan Semple equalized off a corner kick and a deflection. The winner came a few minutes later from Venier, who beautifully redirected a free kick from Semple. There were many great and heartstopping moments along the way, including a well-timed volley off the crossbar by Mallory Crowther a few minutes before Delta’s first goal in the final, and a penalty kick save by goalkeeper Savannah Grant against New Westminster to help preserve the path to the final.

I rate Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford a GREAT DUO to buy or sell your home, they truly are the best! They not only service all of the regular community demographics all over BC but are now also specializing in catering to the large senior market. Both have excellent sales skills, information and resources at hand. While selling my condo they had 2 open houses each weekend plus numerous showings and gave me feedback on each occasion. They always asked if it would be convenient. They also ran large Ads in the Homes for Sale Section. “Thank you” just does not seem adequate to convey my great appreciation for a home sale well done by both of them in partnership! Thanks, Susan Brian and Harry listed our house in Tsawwassen and we had an offer within days. They did not stop their work at that time; instead they continued to market the house in case there were any hiccups (there were none!!). They followed through and helped right until the closing. Overall an excellent process and they were a pleasure to deal with. We really appreciated their hard work and commitment to getting us the best deal. Thanks, Bill and Irene. CALL THE EXPERTS

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
