First elected in 2018, incum bent mayor George Harvie, the former longtime city manager, is facing independent challeng ers Peter van der Velden and Joginder Randhawa
Harvie has a full slate of six candidates for city council as well as seven for school board under the Achieving for Delta banner.
Saying his team has already knocked on thousands of doors since he announced his slate a few months ago, Harvie told the Optimist he’s proud of what he’s been able to accomplish, despite the challenge of the COVID 19 pandemic, which hit mid way through his first term
living in Delta He said residents have conveyed concerns about the need for more housing, the loss of police officers to the new Surrey force, and reduc ing speeds on neighbourhood streets
“For me to do my job, to make my vision and keep my prom ises, I’ll be working extremely hard, and we need our entire Delta team elected to reach my goals,” he said.
Got News?
Having run for the Green Party in South Delta in the last provincial election, van der Velden said he decided to join the mayoralty race, in part, because he didn’t want to see an acclamation, nor one group dominate council

problem but have the ability to add more affordable houses more quickly Builders want to build more apartments and townhouses, but things take too long. These are things builders and people have been telling me, ” he said.
Randhawa said there are many issues that the city has been simply too slow to deal with, including housing, made all the worse by a lengthy approval process that needs an overhaul.
ThreelookingtobecomeDelta’smayor
“We should not be living in three silos We need to be con nected better We’re supposed to be one Delta but it doesn’t feel that way, ” said Randhawa
van der Velden said one of his top priorities will also be to freeze property taxes for the first two years of his term He would also put a quarter of the mayor ’ s salary back into the community Housing is another issue that needs more action by the city, he said, noting the creation of more market housing appears to be the only solution put forward and not for low and middle income earners
Saying they take notes after each household they’ve con tacted on the campaign trail, Harvie said the reception they’ve received has been generally positive and people are happy
The city should also be doing more when it comes to advocat ing for rapid transit, especially between Delta’s three communi ties, while road and other trans portation concerns need more action, he said.
Carriers
“It does bother me because we have issues on the table and Delta seems motivated to move forward, but the concern, of course, is there should be a dialogue on these issues As a politician, you ’ re bound to make sound decisions for your community, but in order to do that you need to look at all sides of the argument,” said van der Velden
The election is Oct. 15.

It was looking like a turtle race more than a fulsome election race up until a week ago, when all of a sudden, a flood of candidates came forward.

The fine for single occu pancy in the HOV lane is pretty steep $109. But maybe it’s worth the risk, because I haven’t seen anyone enforcing the rule in a long time, at least on my afternoon travels Guess if I’m waiting it’s my own fault for following the rules
I was under the impression HOV stood for high occupancy vehicles. Apparently I was wrong. A better description might be how many other vehicles
child along for the ride. That qualifies, but there were a few work trucks with just the driver Unless your colleague is asleep in the back, I’m not sure you are playing by the HOV rules

A 9/11 Memorial Ride originated from Tsawwassen Mills on Sunday, and con cluded with a ceremony at the Peace Arch border. Delta first responders were on hand, including Delta Police as well as Mayor George Harvie who helped open the ride. The tribute ride was the idea of former Ladner resident Guy Morrell who was inspired to honour the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack after visiting Ground Zero in New York City a year later and being part of a memorial procession. A22 The Delta Optimist September15,2022 As of April 2023 the US mint will no longer make one cent coins. Like most countries in the world, they have found the cost of manufacturing them exceeds the value and usefulness of the cent The cent that most people recognize is with Lincoln on the front (obverse) issued to commemorate Lincoln’s 100th birthday Production of this obverse started in 1909 and had a back (reverse) of wheat ears until 1958. From 1959 until 2008 the reverse had the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse. Like most USA coins, cents were made in three different mints, identified by a letter under the date. They are Philadelphia (no mint mark at all), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S) The two most expensive that were issued are the 1909 S with the initials VDB at the bottom of the reverse and 1922 with no D mint mark. They were supposed to have that D as all were made in Denver Both of these are worth $500.00 and up. The 1943 cent was struck in steel and has a white colour to it With a mintage of one billion, it does not have much value. Is it true that the USA is no longer issuing one cent coins? Todays best hearing devices can keep those sounds flowing via bluetooth all in a nice secure comfortable package. If you are nervous about your investments, you’re not alone. Here’s my advice: Filter out the media noise. Dramatic news makes good headlines, but in reality volatility is normal and healthy Successful investing involves using the “ups” and “downs” to your advantage. Ensure your portfolio is well structured. Your financial advisor should customize an investment portfolio unique to your circumstances, carefully considering your specific needs for wealth protection, tax efficient income and comfort with risk. Benefit from a knowledgeable and experienced financial advisor If you have doubts, consider getting a second opinion. What we offer at our dental practice is clear tray braces that have no metal or wires to interfere with everyday life. These series of trays are slightly different every 2 weeks to correct the alignment of the teeth. The movement is very gradual so there is almost little to no discomfort that you would typically experience with the traditional braces. Monthly appointments are not required because the trays are so simple to change at home on your own. Full time wear during the day and more importantly at night allows treatment time to be less than the braces. Brushing and flossing is just the same as if you weren’t straightening your teeth at all. Complimentary consultations are offered at our office to see you’d be a candidate of braces.

Everyone has heard of the nightmare stories of having metal brackets and wires in their mouths and what kind of damage they can do. Cleaning and flossing your teeth is nearly impossible with these traditional braces. Every month wires get tightened and changed causing the mouth to never really heal properly and the person to deal with the discomfort every month.

His progress was measured at this summer ’ s 2022 Speedo Canadian Junior and Senior Swimming Championships in Montreal that con cluded with six open water national titles on the line in the Olympic Rowing Basin He captured the boys’ 14 to 15 year old division, completing the 1 5 km course in 18:14 seconds to edge Alberta’s Domink Kwiecien and Vancouver’s Noah Deschambault The result came after earlier winning silver in the pool in the 800 and 1,500 free style events
“He’s just a good distance swim mer He’s got really good endurance and great fitness,” said Dolphins head coach Judy Baker “He’s also kind of got the love to hurt himself and does not give up That feeling, that sensa tion, of going through the pain to get to that next level He’s always been that

The 14 year old standout with the Winskill Dolphins Swim Club is rep resenting Canada at the FINA Junior Open Water Championships. It’s tak ing place in the tropical waters of Beau Vallen Bay in the Republic of Seychelles on Mahe island off the coast of Africa.
It’s Boyd’s talent over long distances that earned him the opportunity to swim for Canada, although competing in open water was something he wasn’t even thinking about months earlier “I wasn’t even planning on doing open water stuff, but I was told there was a chance I could make the team as one of the top 1,500 meter freestyle swimmers in Canada Then one morn ing I woke up and there was an email from Swim Canada saying I could (go to Worlds) if I wanted to,” said Boyd.

Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford were our Realtors for our first home purchase last year We felt as though they continually went above and beyond in advocating for us in an incredibly competitive market. They were both enthusiastic and empathetic, recognizing that this was a sometimes overwhelming process. We really appreciated their patience in educating us in the real estate process, both from a buying, selling and investment standpoint. We are so happy with our new home, and feel confident that it is a great place for us now and will remain a great investment in the future. We were so grateful to them for being so honest and pro-active about our options throughout our search. Their referral network also took huge pressure off of us, as I did not have to research into mortgage brokers or inspectors, saving us time and stress when it really counted Brian and Harry have taken care of us every step of the way Thank you Brian and Harry!! We highly recommend the services of Brian and Harry We were in search of condo in Tsawwassen with some urgency The service and support provided to us was excellent They provided a complete package of documents regarding the condominium including general information for first time owners of a condominium All our expectations were met They also assisted us in our downsizing process from our family home of 25 years to a condo Brian and Harry successfully assisted our daughter and her family in purchasing a home in Tsawwassen as well.
