CitydeliversstrongmessagetolaunchPrideMonth
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist comDelta’s voice was loud and strong in support of the 2SLGTBQ+ community as Pride Month kicked off with the raising of the Progress Pride Flag at city hall on Thursday morning (June 1).
In a show of solidarity, city council members, leaders, first responders and staff members looked on as city manager Sean McGill and Mayor George Harvie welcomed representatives from the Delta Pride Society, Ladner United Church and Sher Vancouver
“This flag is a symbol of inclusivity, diversity, equality and the community By raising the Progress Pride flag at city hall each June and
having rainbow banners displayed on street poles throughout Delta, we hope to send a clear message to the community that hate and discrimination against people because of who they are, or who they love or whom they love will not be tolerated,” said McGill.
“Pride Month represents a time of celebration, reflection and unity, a time when we come together to honour the struggles and triumphs of the pride community and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive society, a solid society that celebrates diversity for all as we raise the Progress Pride flag,” said Harvie.
“May this flag serve as a reminder that Delta stands tall, and stands strong in its commitment
to equality, inclusion, diversity and love May this flag fly high and proud.”
Among those to express their appreciation of the city’s support was Delta Pride committee member and 20-plus resident Jenn Curll
“I have been out as a proud member of the community since I was a teenager, but I really didn’t feel like I could be myself in a lot of respects I didn’t know how much I needed to see my community represented here until that very first (Pride) picnic happened here. Then the flag and all the banners, it just sort of overwhelms the heart,” said Curll.
“I’m just a person like you I just want to be safe and happy. When I get to see rainbow flags
everywhere, it makes me feel like that’s okay I can just be myself just the same as you want to
be yourself. I just want to celebrate a lot of the same things but with more colour and pizzazz,
maybe. I get to do that really safely here and it’s really because of all of you. ”

The vandalism of Ladner United Church on May 31 is being investigated as a hate crime
As first reported by the Optimist, an unknown person(s) threw black paint, with a specific concentration of paint on the windows directly in front of displayed Progress and Pride flags.
“These flags are symbolic representations of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and their allies and serve as a source of identity and support for many individuals,” said Delta Police in a news release “Defacing or damaging these flags is illegal, disrespectful, and deeply hurtful to the 2SLGBTQI+ community. In this instance, it is not only mischief, it is also being investigated as a hate crime against both the church hosting the flag and the broader 2SLGBTQI+ community
“Since the pride
flag represents the 2SLGBTQI+ community, damaging the flag can be seen as an act of hatred or discrimination against that community By classifying such acts as hate crimes, Canadian law recognizes the importance of protecting marginalized groups and fostering a society that values diversity and inclusion”
During the past two and a half years, Ladner United Church has experienced five incidents that were reported to police Each of these previous incidents underwent thorough investigations; however, no suspects were successfully identified.
Pastor Nancy Painter said this kind of hatred is hard to understand
“Often it comes from fears of things that people don’t understand,” she said. “We are saddened greatly that this has happened The church is the people not the building, but this
building means a lot to people in Ladner It has been here a long time and provided sanctuary and a place of worship for people for a long time This will not make us take down our flags.”
Since the vandalism, the community has rallied around the church.
The Delta Pride Society and the City of Delta have both condemned the vandalism
“Delta Pride Society condemns any forms of hate. We will continue to stand firmly in our advocacy and support of the Pride community - their peace, life, safety and well-being.
We are here for you We stand with you. ”
Delta Mayor George Harvie during the Pride Flag raising ceremony at city hall in Ladner on Thursday, June 1 said, “It’s totally unacceptable the pride community continues to face these acts, and let’s call them disgusting acts I want to ensure the pride com-
munity and the pride members in Delta that we don’t celebrate in Delta just one day or just one month, we celebrate all year every day just to ensure everyone is welcome in our community”
On June 1, a resident put up a “Love Wins”

banner on the front lawn of the church, while students from Delta Secondary came to the church last Thursday and wrote chalk art messages of peace and love on the steps and front sidewalks of the church
“We’ve been getting
lots of messages of support from other churches and individuals,” added Painter. “Events like this are a good reminder that we can’t be complacent –we need to be intentional and visible in our support for people who are treated unjustly.”
PHOTO SUBMITTEDFraserHealthnowprovidingestimatedERwaittimes
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist comMaybe the estimated wait time at Delta Hospital’s emergency department will be long compared to another facility, or perhaps you ’ re better off going to Delta’s ER after all.
The Fraser Health Authority (FHA) has announced the launch of a new information system about average wait times for care at hospital ERs across its region.
Noting it recognizes that some patients and their loved ones are experiencing longer-than-usual wait times, which can be frustrating, the health region says the new information will help patients and families make informed decisions about accessing care The estimates help demonstrate how long it may take to see a physician and the expected length of stay in an ER.
The health region says over the past fiscal year, it has seen a seven per cent increase in ER visits compared to pre-pandemic levels. By providing information about wait times and expected length of stay, the FHA says it hopes to improve the experience for patients and their families
by reducing uncertainty and anxiety.
Dr Craig Murray, regional medical director of emergency medicine, told the Optimist people can choose to travel to another ER that may have less of a waiting time if their case is non-life-threatening, but people should also keep in mind situations can change at an ER.
“I think it’s really about giving the public as much information as we can provide, and they can make educated choices. Obviously, the overriding principle in emergency departments is if you have a life-threatening illness, you should be calling 9-1-1 and be taken to the nearest hospital, but, for less severe things people can get themselves to an emergency department safely, there is value in having some choices,” he said.
“The public in B C pays for the health care system, so I think the public in B.C. have the right to have a sense of what wait times might be like in emergency departments”
Noting Vancouver Coastal Health has had a similar system for several years, Murray said people have already been choosing to go to different hospitals that are not the closest to them based
on perceptions, but now they can make a more educated guess.
Delta Hospital’s ER has 10 acute beds, 10 observation beds, three ambulance bays, plus two negative pressure rooms, two fast track chairs and a trauma room providing 24 hours, seven days a week service
Murray said while he doesn’t have
numbers on how many visits the Delta ER has seen this year, it’s safe to say increases in ER visits have occurred at all FHA hospitals
Patients with an injury or illness that requires urgent medical attention, but is non-life-threatening, can also call the Fraser Health Virtual Care Line at 1-800314-0999 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Delta Police have opened an investigation following the defacing of several City of Delta Pride Month banners
The banners, which are on Ladner Trunk Road by the overpass, were defaced with black paint likely in the overnight and early morning hours of Sunday/Monday.
Coun. Dylan Kruger posted photos of the vandalism to his Twitter account on Monday evening
Police initiated an investigation after seeing the photos and are now working with the city
Mayor George Harvie told the Optimist Tuesday morning that the banners are being replaced
“What ever they deface we will replace…we will not be deterred by this,” said Harvie “Very disappointed, but we also recognize that this is one individual or a small number of individuals. They do not represent Delta.”
Harvie encouraged anyone with information on this vandalism to contact Delta Police.
City of Delta Pride Month banners along Ladner Trunk Road were defaced with black paint sometime overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist comThe City of Delta is one of the first municipalities that has been singled-out for a provincial housing target
At an announcement in Vancouver last Wednesday, (May 31) Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon, the provincial housing minister, named 10 municipalities that will have targets.
“The housing crisis is hurting people and holding back our economy, and we ’ re taking action with our partners to cut red tape and get homes built faster for people. Municipalities are our critical partners in addressing the housing crisis and building healthy, economically viable communities,” said Kahlon
“Our government is eager to work with this first cohort of municipalities to get shovels in the ground faster and ensure the homes people need get built”
In addition to Delta, the other communities that will be given targets include the districts of Saanich, North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Oak Bay,
Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said the province will continue to help local governments speed up local approval processes.
as well as the cities of Vancouver, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Port Moody and Victoria
The province notes that the Housing Supply Act gives it the authority to set targets in municipalities, starting with those with the greatest need and highest projected growth.
The targets are to encourage municipalities to address local barriers to construction so that housing is built faster, including updating zoning bylaws and streamlining local development approval processes
The province says it
will consult with the selected municipalities and set the final housing targets All communities will be encouraged to take the action needed to speed up local processes, and many already have, the government notes. The province has authority to override municipal zoning and regulations if they are slow to act to make changes The act enables compliance options as a last resort, should municipalities struggle to create the conditions that are necessary to ensure housing gets built, the government explains

Delta Fire was back on scene Tuesday morning as they continue to investigate a large wood mulch fire in Tilbury
Firefighters received a call of heavy smoke at a business at 9486 River Road just after 7 p.m. Monday night (June 5).
Deputy Fire Chief Tim Ipsen said the fire was in a large pallet pile roughly 100 by 100 feet wide and 40 to 50 feet high
“The fire was upgraded pretty quickly due to the mass of the fire and there was concern because the fire was close to Burns Bog as well as a lot of trees in the area, ” he said “Metro Vancouver was
called and had a crew on stand-by We had 16 firefighters and four apparatus on scene. It was a strictly defensive attack and we had crews
on scene for close to five hours We also had an excavator brought in helping to pull the fire apart as we were watering it down.”

Loveconquers hate
OPINION Editor’sNote
If you deface it we will replace it.
Those are the words of Mayor George Harvie when I interviewed him Tuesday morning following the discovery of overnight vandalism to several Pride Month banners the city has hung along Ladner Trunk Road.
The banners, which fly high in the sky, were splattered with black paint – possibly the same black paint that was used to target the Pride flags at Ladner United Church, which the Optimist reported on last week
If you have a sick sense of deja vu as I do in writing this column and you do in reading this column, you would be correct in that this is not the first time I have penned said column. I wrote a similar one this time last year when once again hate and bigotry was on full display in our community
Mayor Harvie pointed out in our interview that those responsible for their heinous acts are a small minority and involve people who do not represent Delta. I hope he is right.
I love living and working in this community I, like all of us, want to feel safe and welcomed in this community, but these incidents against Ladner United and the 2SLGBTQI+ community does not make anyone feel safe or welcomed
It is so sad that these incidents, which Delta Police are investigating as hate crimes, continue to happen
But there is some good news in all of this The community has rallied around Ladner United with a resident putting up a Love Wins banner out front of the church last week. Students from Delta Secondary armed with boxes of chalk, filled the sidewalks and church steps with messages of love and support
And that’s what we should be talking about
love, support and community – a community where all feel welcome
The path to success for Southlands
At the recent Georgie awards gala, Century Group took home five prestigious awards for its master-planned community of Southlands in Tsawwassen; Best SingleFamily Home Production (for the Courtyard Cottages), Best Environmental Initiative, Best Sales Centre, Best Project Identity, and the Grand Georgie - Residential Community of the Year
Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA) CEO Neil Moody noted that “The Georgie Awards are a testament to the excellence, professionalism and innovation that defines the residential construction industry in British Columbia. They are an opportunity to celebrate the incredible work being done by builders, renovators, designers, and marketers and to recognize their contributions to the communities they serve. ”
The path to this success certainly did not come easily.
Community Comment
MIKE SCHNEIDERThe ultimate deal reached between Century Group and the City of Delta is a testament to the hard work that both parties engaged in over several years.
One of the main stumbling blocks to the initial development proposal was that there was a concern that farmland would be compromised in the development. The reality is that much of the farmland in question on the Southlands was not farmable and one only has to remember when whole potato and corn crops were lost to poor
drainage and the inability to get equipment into the fields.
One part of the eventual compromise for the development was for millions of dollars of investment into drainage and irrigation Today, even if there is an atmospheric weather event, equipment will still be able to get into the fields after a couple of days.
If you drive, or better walk or bike to the Southlands from the 4th Ave and 56th St entrance, you will see how expansive the large-scale farming operations are The irony is that there is far more production in the works now than there has ever been before There is vast acreage producing food now where land lay fallow in the past.
Southlands, the Residential Community of the Year, has clearly shown that a community built around food and farming is a sound planning concept that should be considered elsewhere.
Congratulations Century Group and City of Delta.

Just over four years ago I was admitted to the Delta Hospital emergency department with a very concerning wound on my left foot. Just within the last week my foot is back to normal with the foot and all toes intact. Since I have spent so much time in Delta Hospital I want to confirm that the care and assistance I received there was always polite, considerate, professional and top notch.
Particularly I want to thank Matt in the IV clinic who has bandaged my foot more times than I can count, and gave me antibiotics that saved me from further and more serious problems
As well thanks to Dr Gilchrist and Dr. Tan who regularly applied their knowledge to eventually get my foot healed.
Then there is all of the nurses and support staff, dealing with hundreds of people every day and encountering every issue
the human body can generate They do that with care and consideration no matter who you are, or what ails you I don’t know how you do it but I really appreciate what you do
As an observer on the inside for four years I can tell the people of South Delta we have a fantastic little hospital with very capable and caring individuals inside, so support them when you can

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the Optimist for helping support our Ukraine Benefit Concert that featured Ukrainian concert pianist Anna Sagalova
The generous space you gave in the paper for your advance write up/ press release is greatly appreciated.
The concert was almost
sold out and we were able to raise a significant amount for the Ukraine charity, and also were able to pay Anna a generous performance fee.
Equally as important was the concert itself
I was very proud of our Ladner audience as being amazingly appreciative… They gave Anna three standing ovations.

Then at the end Anna did an encore
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an encore at a classical music performance before.
Lon SchiederPublic input request seems disingenuous
Editor:
It seems disingenuous that the provincial government is requesting public input on the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project, stating that B.C. ministers have not decided if the project should proceed, when Premier Eby has already publicly expressed his wholehearted approval and the federal government has given the green light.
Is it possible that a public outcry from the citizens of British Columbia could stop this environmental tragedy from proceeding? One can only hope.
The federal government
has stated that its approval includes 370 legally binding conditions to protect the environment.
Firstly, where is the government going to get the resources to enforce these 370 legally binding conditions? One has to admit that its record on enforcing environmental laws is dismal at best
Secondly, a cursory look at the conditions reveals serious, numerous deficits To mention only a few; there is no requirement for monitoring of the terminal’s effects on salmon migration patterns. There is no mention of vessel strikes. The apparent require-
ment not to increase noise does not include noise from the operation of the marine terminal, which is the only activity that all parties agreed will increase noise.
In case nobody has noticed, there is a global diversity, climate and species extinction crisis. The health of the Fraser Estuary is vital to millions of migrating birds, salmon and other fish and marine mammals, not to mention plant life on land and in the marine environment It is already critically threatened This project will tip it over the edge.

Rentalbuildingproposedfor ArthurDriveinLadner
SANDOR GYARMATIsgyarmati@delta-optimist
comDelta council at its committee of the whole meeting Tuesday heard from the applicant behind a proposal to build a 56-unit rental apartment building in Ladner.
The purpose-built rental complex would be located at 4501 Arthur Dr , the site of the former Delta Lodge seniors’ care facility which is now vacant. The proposal is still at a preliminary concept stage with a formal development application yet to be submitted
The proposal would see an existing historic house on the site, the Westhome Residence, demolished Hedges surrounding the property and trees would also be removed.
Two years ago, the city received a development application to construct a 61-bed community care facility at the property
Heritage Conservation Area.
A planning department report notes that while the applicant provided an inspection report documenting the deteriorating condition of the existing heritage building, staff encourage the applicant to consider retention, restoration and integration of the house with the proposed development, and to engage a heritage professional to provide a more substantive heritage evaluation report with possible mitigation and restoration recommendations.
Staff told council they would discuss with the applicant potential options, but Mayor George Harvie described the house as “rotting” and having long held up development at the property Council members, following the presentation, said they look forward to seeing a formal application come forward

That application proposed a new three-storey building with one level of under-building parking.
The heritage house would have been located closer to Arthur Drive and fully restored as part of the care facility.
At Tuesday’s presentation to council, architect Andrea Scott with Lovick Scott Architects Ltd., said there is an immediate need for rental accommodation in the community
She added the existing house on the property is in very poor condition and would require extensive repairs
The house is listed on Delta’s Heritage Register and located within the Ladner
Staff said the next step for the owners is to prepare detailed architectural and landscape plans before submitting a formal development application A public engagement process would take place for the application, which also requires a public hearing as it needs an Official Community Plan amendment
The same site was also the subject of a previous subdivision application that would have accommodated the heritage house. That application included seven single-detached bare land strata lots and common property for driveway access off Arthur Drive
The application received third reading by council in November 2017, but it was subsequently abandoned, and the property was sold.

Allyouneedtoknowaboutthe27th seasonofLadnerVillageMarket
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist comIt’s the perfect formula of longtime vendors with ever-changing intriguing new merchants in an outdoor setting that adds up to the immense popularity of the Ladner Village Market.
The 27th edition opens this Sunday (June 11) and runs every other Sunday until Sept 10
“Over the course of the summer (and the seven market dates) we have 290 vendors of which 45 are brand new It’s nice to see the newness coming into our market with our longtime vendors that have supported us since the beginning,” said market manager Tracey McKnight who returns with her husband Bill to spearhead the market even though they retired after closing their South Coast Casuals clothing store in the village earlier this year.
“It’s wonderful to have them [vendors] back and, of course, they progress and change their styles a bit or flavours of their different foods. It makes it a reason to come to each market and each one has different vendors as well”
Management also ensures the market maintains a high standard with its “make it, bake it, grow it,” criteria that sees all items produced by an artisan or baker.
A typical Sunday Market will see a breakdown of the 176 vendors being 23 percent gourmet food, 18 percent home products, 12 percent fresh produce, 10 percent eatery, nine percent garden (plants/flowers), six percent jewelry and five percent local art. These numbers never waver, so the wide appeal of the market is maintained as each cat-
Father’s Day
egory has a waiting list.
“Fifty-one percent of our products must be produce, plants or prepared foods. That is one of the criteria of being a member of the B.C. Association of Farmers Market and we cover that easily,” said McKnight
She adds the ethnic food options continues to grow with Mexican, Indian, Spanish and Japanese joining the regulars this year such as Greek and Hungarian. The market is delighted to add a frozen beef vendor from Prince George that promises to be a popular stop for many.
Musicians will be providing entertainment throughout the summer dates. Check the market website about 72 hours before each date for the lineup by visiting www ladnervillagemarket com

Rotarians clean up Tsawwassen streets
Under Delta’s AdoptA-Street program, Tsawwassen Rotarians were out on Saturday, May 27, to once again pick up litter from 12th Avenue. From English Bluff Road to 56th Street Rotary volunteers picked up 1,730 pieces of garbage
“It is amazing what you see when you walk with your head down,” said clean up coordinator Tom Smith. “We were surprised to see the most common item was cigarette butts As we are heading into the dry season, we hope folks will be mindful of the fire hazard and extinguish and dispose of cigarettes safely.”
Rotary Club of
Tsawwassen is one of the founding members of the PickUp3 program so they entered their litter count into the “trash metre” which has now grown to more than 109,000 thousand pieces of trash removed from beaches, parks and community.
“The collective impact is impressive, everyone can join by going to pickup3.org or by scanning one of the program stickers placed on many of the garbage cans in our community,” said Smith Rotary Club of Tsawwassen thanks the City of Delta for use of their equipment and the Rose & Crown Pub who took care of disposal of the non-recyclable items

SouthDeltaGardenTourreturnsJune25
After a three-year hiatus, the South Delta Garden Club is re-introducing an event that drew 500 Lower Mainlanders to South Delta in each of 2017 and 2019.
“When we broached the idea with people, we realized there was some pent-up demand for a garden tour and quite a bit of excitement at the idea of having another one, ” stated Garden Tour Committee Chair, Susan Lilholt.
This year ’ s tour features two gardens with different Asian influences, one that invites meditation, and a yard whose co-owner learned techniques from working in Queen Elizabeth Park earlier in life Three of the gardens are owned
by resident artists and one by a forester Visitors will find unexpected ideas with plants grown in shade and other beds filled with sunny colour One garden has a quiet palette and multiple leaf textures creating a tranquil oasis. Still, another is grown as a cutting garden with creative ways to keep tall flowers upright and to capture water. The careful observer will spot unusual and artistic containers on display and ways to use vertical space. The South Delta Garden Tour is a selfguided journey, which means people drive themselves to each Ladner or Tsawwassen location (or cycle, if they are up to it) using the maps on the ticket
The 2023 Tour features 10 private and distinct gardens plus one public garden, which will offer special tour-day guided tours The tour gives people an opportunity to see horticultural spaces they would otherwise be
unable to view. The Tour is planned for Sunday, June 25. Tickets are available for cash payment only from six nurseries and retailers in Delta, Richmond and Surrey: Harris Nurseryland, Phoenix
Perennials, Sunnyside Nurseries, Vandula Farms, West Coast Gardens, and West Coast Seeds Advance tickets are $30 and tour-day tickets, if available, are $40 from one location, Harris Nurseryland Everyone
is welcome, including children 12 and older; however, due to uneven ground, the tour is not wheel-chair accessible or stroller-friendly Pets are prohibited.

New scoreboard at Ladner Sport Court
in memory of Thomas Haydon
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist comWith just over a week away until the annual Thomas Haydon Day, a scoreboard in his memory has now been installed in the new Ladner Sport Court
The $22,000 scoreboard was gifted by the Thomas Haydon Memorial Award committee to the City of Delta and the local lacrosse community for the now covered Ladner outdoor box that reopened last summer for year-round play following a $2.1 million transformation.
Haydon was a lifetime Ladner resident and Delta firefighter who lost a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2018 at the age of 36, leaving behind his young family. He was also a big part of the lacrosse community as a player and a coach.
In his honour, the Thomas Haydon Memorial Game and Award was
launched in 2019. The fundraiser sees his former teammates and friends get together for a fun alumni game and social before presenting the award and bursary to a member of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders. Haydon was the first-ever captain of the Islanders.
The fundraising also paid for the new scoreboard.
This year ’ s Thomas Haydon Day takes place on Saturday, June 17 at the Ladner Leisure Centre A beer garden will be in operation from 3 to 10 p.m. The alumni game is slated to get underway at 3:30 and this year ’ s award will be presented during the second intermission of the Junior Islanders game against the Port Coquitlam Saints
The Thomas Haydon Memorial Award and is permanently on display on the south wall of the LLC
The Haydon Award committee also thanks Justin Dowd with Image Signs for installing the new scoreboard.

A recent grant of $2,000 was made to the Step Forward Health Society, an organization that provides mental health support to individuals, couples and families Mental health support is offered through qualified mental health counsellors, information and group support programs.
“The Step Forward Program was started with the hope to ensure that money does not get in the way of people receiving the help and care they need for their mental health,” said Meg Neufeld, president of the Step Forward Society. “Financial barriers can often prevent people from
seeking help, and we are grateful to the Delta Community Foundation for their support of our program because we know it is going to help so many people”
Community Foundation chair Gail Martin said its board is strong advocates of organizations that support mental health programs in Delta
“Grants, such as this one, enable citizens within our community who need mental health support to access it in a timely and affordable way, ” adds Martin “The Step Forward Health Society offers professional counselling services to individuals and families in Delta and we are proud to support this organization”

If I were to ask you if you practice meditation, perhaps most of you would say no, but, I wonder if that is really true I actually believe we all meditate. The problem is that we don’t choose what to meditate on. If you are like me, the most natural things to fixate our thoughts on are negative things. A thought comes into your head and bounces around like those big steel ball bearings in a pinball game Like that person who was rude to me, or the guy who cut me off in traffic, or whatever my latest life stressor is When I fixate on those kinds of thoughts
Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
Rev. Jason Truell
What if we changed it up a bit? What difference would that make in your life if you chose what to fixate your thoughts on instead of just letting it happen?
There have been many scientific studies about the benefits of gratitude that corroborate what the Bible says Feel free to Google “studies on the benefits of gratitude” and find out for yourself
The Apostle Paul said, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable Think about things that are
excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me everything you heard from me and saw me doing Then the God of peace will be with you ” (in Philippians 4:8–9NLT)
Here’s a suggestion for you It’s something that my wife, Ruth, does regularly Start a gratitude journal Write down five things each day that you are grateful for, and then choose to bring your mind back to those things throughout the day They don’t have to be big profound things, but I can almost guarantee that if you regularly do this each day, it will change your life profoundly.

Ron Phillips’ 1971 Minto Cup champion Roadrunners part of 2023 induction class
MARK BOOTHmbooth@delta-optimist
comIt’s another big lacrosse celebration for a longtime Ladner family that has given so much back to the sport for decades.
Ceremonies officially took place last week for the 2023 B C Sports Hall of Fame induction class, including the 1971 Minto Cup national junior champion Richmond Roadrunners. The GM and coach of that team was Ron Phillips
The longtime local resident led the Roadrunners on one of the most memorable runs in the history of the B C Junior “A” Lacrosse League.
After the franchise had relocated from Vancouver to Minoru Arena that year, the Roadrunners stumbled out of the gate with an 0-5 record That’s when the players began to buy into Phillips’ brand of lacrosse, playing feisty defence and relying on quick offensive breakouts
The team featured plenty of future Western Lacrosse Association stars including Dave and Brian Tasker, along with Dave Durant.
Richmond would win 14 of its next 19 games to finish second in the regular season behind powerhouse Burnaby Cablevision
The Roadrunners took out New West in the semifinals, setting the stage for a a showdown with Burnaby in the championship series that eventually shifted to Queen’s Park Arena to accommodate crowds of over 4,000. The memorable match-up went the distance with Richmond prevailing to earn the right to represent B C at home against Ontario champion Peterbrough in the Minto Cup.
Phillips was able to add players to his line-up for nationals, including standout Burnaby goaltender Ted Gernaey and Salmonbellies
star Walt Weaver
The added weapons were needed as the Roadrunners prevailed in an epic series, highlighted by a 13-11 game seven victory in front of 5,000 fans crammed into Queen’s Park Arena
It was Phillips’ second Minto Cup, having been a member of the 1954 champion PNE Junior Indians as a player
Now, 89, he got a chance to catch up with some of his former players and staff at the hall of fame plaque unveiling ceremony and the gala banquet on Thursday night at the Fairmont Hotel
His family was also in attedance including his son Darcy, longtime president
of Delta Minor Lacrosse and then the Delta Junior “A” Islanders The latter tenure was highlighted by a run to
the franchise’s first BCJALL title in 2016. Among the key players on that team was Ron’s grandson and Darcy’s son Jon
Sports SuperBowlchampionnow inB.C.SportsHallofFame
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist comMitch Berger has become just the second Delta native to be inducted into the athlete category in the 57-year history of the B C Sports Hall of Fame
The North Delta Secondary graduate joins athletes Dennis Kearns (hockey), Kelsey Serwa (ski cross), Jamie Borisoff (wheelchair basketball), Susan Butt (tennis) and Mary-Anne Walz (softball) as part of the 2023 class. The only other Delta-raised athlete to be inducted was international swimmer Pamela Rai back in 1993.
Berger was recognized for his distinguished career in the NFL He played 15-seasons (1994-2009) as a kicker/ punter with 11 different teams, most notably the Minnesota Vikings (19962001), New Orleans Saints (2003-06) and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, winning a Super Bowl that season.
Twice, he was named to the NFL Pro Bowl and selected as an All-Pro (1999, 2004).
Now residing in Arizona, the 50-yearold returned home for last week’s plaque unveiling ceremony at B.C.
Place Stadium and Gala Banquet at the Fairmont Hotel. He brought his young son MJ to the celebrations and paid tribute to his parents, having lost both in recent years.
Don Berger, a native of Pittsburgh, was a huge part of his son ’ s career, having coached many years in North Delta Minor Football.
“My story started as a six-year-old boy raised by an American father who was trying to raise me as an American Everyone else was playing hockey but me, ” chuckled Berger “When I was playing Pee Wee football my dad wanted to find out how to score more points to beat other six-and-seven-year-old teams He taught me out of a handbook how to kick My dad has been with me every step of the way. ”
His football career wasn’t a smooth ride from start to finish
He graduated from North Delta without a scholarship and had to prove himself at a junior college in Texas That paved his way to the University of Colorado and ultimately being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles However, an impressive start wasn’t enough to save the “budget” punter and he was released
a few games into his rookie season.
Over the next two years he would get cut five more times from four different teams. He was eventually back home pumping gas at the Petro Can station under the Alex Fraser Bridge
“That was as low as I had felt but after I had pumped gas from 6 a.m. until noon, my dad and I went to the field and I would kick and then I would go to the gym, ” said Berger.
His perseverance would pay off when he was signed by the Vikings He eventually finished his career with the Steelers, winning the Super Bowl in Tampa that season with his family in the stands.
Berger also thrived on the basketball court, earning provincial first team allstar honours in his Grade 12 year back in 1990 as the Huskies defeated the Richmond Colts in the title game at the PNE Agrodome.
Delta MP recognized for her work in and out of the pool
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist comAchieving the greatest lifetime athletic honour in the province also provided Carla Qualtrough some valuable family time and the opportunity to reflect on her remarkable life so far
The Delta MP and Liberal cabinet minister was back home to officially be inducted into the B C Sports Hall of Fame. She enters in the builder category, reflecting her impact in various roles
Qualtrough served as president of the Canadian Paralympic Committee from
2006 to 2010. She is the first Paralympic athlete elected to Canadian Parliament, served as Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities from 2015 to 2017 and is currently a member of the International Paralympic Committee’s Legal and Ethics Committee, a role she has held since 2002
She also served as the IPC’s Legal Officer for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, served as vice-president of the Americas Paralympic Committee from 2013 to 2015.
As an athlete, she represented Canada in swimming at two Paralympic Games (1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona) winning three
bronze medals.
“It’s honestly the most special thing you could ever imagine I’m super emotional I’m very grateful. I’m nostalgic,” Qualtrough told the Optimist
Growing up in Langley, she played several sports before thriving in the pool.
“I found swimming at a really difficult time in my life I don’t think I’d be where I am today if I hadn’t found a sport that I could find a (swimming) family in the world that exposed me to a life that I wanted to build. It made me the person I am, ” she said “I honestly don’t think I can give enough back to sports for what is has given to me ”

comSouth Delta Sun Devils senior girls teams have enjoyed plenty of success over the years in soccer, volleyball, field hockey and basketball. Now another sport has taken flight again
The Sun Devils sevens team recently wrapped up its campaign, marking the first time rugby has been offered exclusively to female student athletes at the Tsawwassen school in recent years
With just eight players, ranging from Grades 8 to 12, the girls worked their way through the South Fraser Development League schedule, even relying on some opponents’ assistance for certain games due to minor
injuries.
Coach and SDSS teacher Sean Waymouth says the main objective of the season was to get the team up-andrunning, regardless of the roster size
“The whole point of the season this year was to spark interest, get the information out there, and try and show younger grades that we do have another sport that someone else can participate in,” he explained “Not every athlete is a soccer or a volleyball player They may still want to participate in sports, but there never was a fit for them until now.
“One of the big things about rugby is that it’s for every size, every shape and skill of a player All different people are needed to play
rugby.”
It’s the exact same reason why football has long been a popular sport for male student athletes at the school.
Waymouth’s challenge was getting his players to understand the rules and the technical skills of the game. He had just two players with rugby experience
“One of our girls actually played for the junior boys team last season and scored most of our tries because she was so dominant with her prior experience Another one of girls started to play club rugby for Bayside in the fall so she had that experience as well The other six had never really played before,” he said “Really the season was all about learning and building a love for the game ”
