Delta police stepping up road safety message

The Delta Police Department is prioritizing road safety as part of its ongoing communications to improve community safety.

“There are a few different buckets — or categories — that make up our overall goal,” says A/Insp. James Sandberg, public affairs manager for the DPD.

“One of them, of course, is enforcement, and another is education. Over the last few weeks, we’ve heightened the focus on road safety, on our social-media channels and our news releases — awareness, and the efforts we’re taking in terms of enforcement.”

Dangerous driving — involving excessive speed, alcohol and/or drug impairment, or a combination of both — is the reason for many of the phone calls, emails and social-media com-

ments the DPD receives from the public.

“We recognized that something we could improve upon is sharing back to the community about what our enforcement looks like,” says

Sandberg. “The goal is raising awareness of the enforcement that we’re doing and, hopefully, what it will do is create a cascade effect where people realize, ‘The police are out there doing

traffic enforcement,’ and will cause those drivers to raise their right foot and take some speed off.”

While community safety is the primary focus of the DPD’s messaging, Sandberg notes that

drivers who are caught operating a vehicle at an excessive speed stand to suffer financial consequences as well.

A driver who is caught exceeding the speed limit between 40 and 59 kmh,

incurs a fine of $368.

The fine then graduates at 60 kmh and above.

Additionally, the driver’s vehicle is automatically towed and impounded for seven days, the costs of which are charged directly to the driver. ICBC then designates the driver “high risk” and imposes a higher premium for the next three years.

“At the end of the day, all of those different components add up to about $1,950 in fees associated with the excessive-speed charge,” says Sandberg. In July, there were 49 deaths in B.C. because of collisions on provincial roadways.

Sandberg adds there have already been “several more” collision-related deaths in August.

“It’s not just a municipal issue or a local issue. It’s a provincial issue, and we’re doing our part to try to lower these statistics,” he said.

Council reviews costs of Boundary Bay Airshow

Delta council recently endorsed a motion by Coun. Dylan Kruger for the city to initiate a thorough review of all costs associated with the annual Boundary Bay Airshow, including in-kind costs such as fire, police, parks and recreation and engineering staff time.

Staff are to provide recommendations for improvements, if any, based on the findings.

Noting the airshow is a significant annual event that requires various resources and in-kind support, Kruger said it is best practice to periodically review the costs associated with large community events to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency.

Held in July, the airshow has been produced through a cost-sharing partnership between the city and Alpha Aviation, which operates the municipally owned airport.

Both parties make significant financial contributions to allow the show to remain a free and

accessible family event.

According to a staff report, Delta’s cash contribution to the 2024 airshow was to be 50 percent of net, actual outof-pocket event costs, less any sponsorship funds collected, up to a maximum of $100,000.

Additionally, Delta provides in-kind support,

including police and fire services.

Delta would also seek sponsorships from the community. The city would be responsible for overall traffic management and plans to coordinate the bus shuttle service from an off-site parking area to help alleviate congestion near

CHAMBERMUSIC

the airport. The total costs for traffic control, bus shuttles and a bike valet were estimated at approximately $50,000.

Last year, for the 2023 event, Alpha Aviation requested additional financial support to offset growing production costs.

A 2023 net cash request of up to $100,000 was made, increased from $35,000 in 2022, but consistent with Delta’s cash contribution provided in 2019.

In a cost-sharing arrangement, the city provided a $100,000 cash contribution for that 2019 show to help bring in the Canadian F-18 Hornet Demonstration Team.

In 2022, after the show had returned from a hiatus due to the pandemic, the city provided

a $35,000 cash contribution, the same amount provided for the 2018 show.

Also requested last year by Alpha was increased shuttle service, estimated to cost an extra $20,000 for bigger buses.

Delta’s total cash contribution would be 50 percent of the net out-ofpocket costs of that airshow, up to a maximum of $100,000.

Alpha Aviation managed on-site parking at the airport and last year, proposed to charge a $20-to-$25 on-site vehicle parking fee to encourage attendees to find alternative parking and sustainable transportation. That was up from $10 charged in 2022.

The same higher parking fee applied this year as well.

DSS track taking shape

$5-million project should be completed by November

Ladner residents are seeing the transformation of a beat-up old track transform into a new facility the community can enjoy outside Delta Secondary.

Work is well underway on the $5-million track replacement project in collaboration with the Delta School District.

Construction began in June and is scheduled for completion by this November.

The construction involves the installation of a modern synthetic running surface, offering enhanced durability and performance for athletes, and more uses, while the natural grass playing field will undergo upgrades, including advanced drainage and irrigation systems to ensure optimal playing conditions

year-round.

Long jump runways will also be installed to accommodate para-athletes, fostering inclusivity and accessibility.

The city also noted that to enhance community access in the evening and early morning, pedestrian lighting will

be installed around the track perimeter. As well, pedestrian connections from 45th Avenue to the track and the adjacent Memorial Park will be expanded.

The grass infield will be open to the public by February.

Council launches Save Our Transit campaign

IAN JACQUES

ijacques@delta-optimist.com

The City of Delta is encouraging the public to get involved in the Save Our Transit campaign, a public advocacy campaign spearheaded by the city to protect and preserve transit service across the region.

Transit in Delta is currently

at risk due to significant funding issues at TransLink, which recently announced a $600 million funding gap that could force the organization to halve its transit services, starting in 2026.

When TransLink made this announcement, Coun. Dylan Kruger called for an emergency meeting of council as it did not have any meetings scheduled

Delta replacing Ladner boat launch

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The two-lane boat launch at Ferry Road in Ladner is going to be closed for a few months starting later this year.

The City of Delta has been planning for the reconstruction of the existing boat launch, located at the north end of Ferry Road, which has reached the end of its service life with replacement of the float system and the complete reconstruction of the concrete ramp needed.

The replacement boat launch will have improved functional use outside of high tide conditions, the city notes.

A civic report says

government approvals have been obtained, which have identified an in-stream work window of Nov. 1, 2024 to Jan. 31, 2025 for the project. Total cost of the project is budgeted at $1.65 million.

Meanwhile, the city is also planning a replacement for the boat launch ramp at Wellington Point. The boat launch’s wooden float system was replaced in 2022 and included the installation of new piles to restrain the float system.

While the top threequarters of the concrete ramp is in relatively sound condition, the lower quarter is deteriorated and broken with the waterside edge of the ramp being

for the month of August.

Council convened on Aug. 6 and came up with directives to bring more attention to the potential of these looming cuts.

“This is an existential crisis for Delta and our entire region,” said Kruger.

“If these cuts are allowed to proceed, the impact on the daily lives of tens of thousands of residents will be devastating.

Council must act urgently to demand better solutions from senior government.”

Last week, the city launched Save Our Transit, a campaign designed to raise public awareness of the possible cuts and encourage Delta residents to write to the premier and other provincial officials, calling for a sustainable funding model for TransLink.

The campaign will be promoted across social media platforms, as well as through advertising at local bus shelters and Delta facilities, like recreation centres and libraries.

The public is encouraged to get involved by visiting letstalk. delta.ca/SaveOurTransit, where they can write a letter to their local provincial representative, and or sign the petition.

The project includes dredging of approximately 685 square metres of sediment from the area approaching the boat ramp and extension of the float to increase boat capacity.

noticeably undermined, according to the city.

A complete replacement of the concrete ramp is required.

Staff anticipate that an in-stream construction work window would take place between November

2025 and January 2026.

As well, the city this summer issued a request for bids for the rehabilitation of the viewing wharf at Wellington Point Park on River Road West, which has been closed to the public since January.

The city notes that, based on a January 2024 marine-structural consultant’s site review, further deficiencies in addition to recommended rehabilitation work in a 2019 inspection report were identified.

The report says the estimated costs of the refurbishment are considerably higher than budgeted, owing to additional deficiencies identified and the escalation in construction costs over the past several years.

CITY

Delta wants new, long-term plan for fire department

Asking for bids for review that will look at current fire halls and recommend on location, number, and response times

The City of Delta has issued a request for bids for a consultant to develop a new fire department master plan, examining the current organization and providing a strategic direction for the next decade or more.

The task is to evaluate the entire Delta Fire current service delivery model and structure and provide recommendations for improvements in the short, medium and long terms, according to the city.

The department has over 200 staff, 19 fire apparatus, seven fire halls and a training facility. In addition to fire suppression, Delta Fire provides pre-hospital care, rescue activities, hazardous materials response and other emergency services.

In 2023, Delta Fire responded to 8,200 incidents and 3,000 additional fire apparatus movements.

The consultant is to review and provide recommendations to Delta

Fire by gauging its present and future capabilities in terms of its current mandate and anticipated future requirements.

The process will consider, among other factors, projected city population growth and development.

The master plan will also provide recommendations on additional complex risks and hazards, fire protection and preparedness.

It will also assess the effects of existing and proposed road, traffic and transportation systems, raised cross-

walks and other physical traffic-calming features on emergency response times.

The extensive review is to include current facilities and make recommendations on location, number, size, response times and overall requirements, as well as assess the location of fire halls 1, 2 and 5, examining options for alternative, improved locations.

A final comprehensive report is to be presented to the fire chief by April 2025, followed by a report and presentation to council.

OPINION

The power of sport

WEditor’s Note

IAN JACQUES

e are now a few weeks removed from the Summer Olympics in Paris and quite frankly, I have Olympic withdrawal.

Our athletes came home with 27 medals (nine gold, seven silver and 11 bronze). The medal total beat the 24 we had in Tokyo in 2020 with B.C. athletes dominating the podium.

In all, 33 per cent of Canada’s 27 medals were won by B.C. athletes, including gold in the women’s hammer throw from Richmond’s Camryn Rogers, who has been featured many times in the pages of the Richmond NEWS by former sports editor Mark Booth.

What a magical two weeks for Canadian athletes and for us fans, a proud two weeks to cheer on our athletes and wear the Maple Leaf with pride.

So much so, in fact, it has me thinking about the power of sport in our own community of Delta.

Did you know that the Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association proudly hosted three provincial championships in the past month at Winskill Park?

The association welcomed more than 30 teams from across B.C., along with their family and friends, no doubt bringing a lot to our community in terms of financial support.

This past weekend, the South Delta Brewers hosted a stellar senior men’s Western Canadian Baseball Championship.

This weekend marks the start of one of the toughest lacrosse tournaments in the country – the President’s Cup – proudly hosted by the Ladner Pioneers.

Sports has the ability to bring us all together as a community to support success, achievement and participation in a sport or event that many have a passion for.

The Olympics certainly showed what can happen through the power of sport, the power of family, and the power of bringing community and a country together.

Back-to-school tips that work

As a former school trustee, I’ve had many conversations with parents who want to set their elementary-aged kids up for academic success.

It may surprise some that evidence shows parents don’t have to spend a lot of money or worry about choosing the “right” school.

By employing simple strategies and focusing on their children’s well-being, significant improvements in academic outcomes can be achieved. These strategies can also be adapted for busy families, especially if there is some flexibility with work start times or if caregivers are involved in the routines.

While there are many school choice programs available, I always recommend the local neighbourhood school.

The school closest to home offers a sense of community and connection and provides kids with the best

Community Comment

opportunity for walking to school.

Of course, parents can adjust for time and distance by driving partway and walking the rest of the way to any school.

Evidence shows that a 10to 15-minute walk or active playground time before the school day starts helps to “kick start” a child’s brain.

Plus, if parents and caregivers accompany kids on the walk, they can make positive connections with other families.

After school, while playdates and activities are fun, it’s also important to block off some unscheduled time. When paired with reasonable screen-time limits, free time allows for a bit of boredom, which has been shown to spark creativity and imagination.

In the evenings, spending time together doing simple activities like going for a walk, tossing a ball, or tackling age-appropriate chores can provide essential checkin time and connection.

And don’t forget — screens off well before bed. Lastly, ensuring that reading time is part of the bedtime routine is a great way to wind down.

It not only enriches a child’s vocabulary and writing skills but also helps to foster a lifelong reading habit.

If you’re exhausted, let them read to you, and know that you’re doing a great job supporting your child’s success!

Seniors housing needed, now

Editor:

Regarding the proposed development at 4900 Central Avenue, (Optimist, Aug. 8) the developers skirt the pressing issues of housing for seniors.

In their report on Delta’s community engagement website it states, “In response to the concerns over seniors housing, staff acknowledge that this three-level townhouse design is better suited to families than seniors. However, the new OCP has designated many new areas for six-storey multiunit development across the city that

could be appropriate for a developer or provider to build a seniors housing or community care facility.”

How can this be an accepted response?

The OCP was intended to create more affordable and inclusive housing in our community. How can council see this half-hearted response, and approve the building development? We need to do better, and not use the new OCP as an excuse to make it someone else’s problem.

Transit service is so unreliable

Editor:

I receive email alerts from TransLink regarding our 601 and 620 buses.

Every day, I receive alerts for at least four cancellations. Often, it is even more.

Reasons given are traf-

fic, mechanical issues, or operational issues, whatever that means.

How can people get out of their cars when our buses are so undependable? I feel our South Delta bus service cannot be relied upon for things

like medical appointments or getting to the airport or ferries. It would be different if the bus frequency was greater but unfortunately, the time between buses is quite long.

The Optimist builds our city

Editor:

What with technology and the internet, I am fearful for the future of all newspapers, especially for our little gem, the Delta Optimist.

While reading the Aug. 1 edition I was drawn to the half-page ad which alerted readers that no longer will they receive any flyer inserts. Instead, stated the ad, the newspaper is asking grocers and businesses to advertise. This is not a money-grab, this is yet another strategy on the newspaper’s part to try to get enough revenue to keep this newspaper in production.

One-by-one, local newspapers have folded. The Optimist is one of the few remaining. In it, we read of news pertaining to our little part of the world, be it

local events, sports, or council news. This newspaper is a community builder.

When we first moved to Ladner, every Wednesday and Friday, a free newspaper was delivered to our door.

A few years back, it became a weekly newspaper.

I confess to being a bit shocked when I first started seeing ads that asked readers to consider “subscribing” to a free newspaper.

It took me a while to understand the concept, but now I am proud to say we are, and will continue to be, subscribers.

We look forward to hearing our mailbox open/close on Thursdays when our reliable, long-time-carrier-family deposits the latest edition right to our door.

Thanks for your help after bad fall

Editor:

I would like to say a heartfelt, thank you to the gentleman who came to my rescue after my bad fall, Aug. 6.

They phoned for an ambulance and stayed with me until it arrived. Also, a nurse driving by stopped to see if she could help.

Also, a very big thank you to Delta Hospital emergency, Dr. Beck and all her nurses … they really are angels. Theresa Richardson

I can’t imagine many would expect to see Tupac quoted in the Optimist, but I’ll leave it to you to look up the Tupaccoined acronym for THUG LIFE, for some context to my reflection.

The idea that hate is learned has been on my mind as I try to explain to my three-year-old daughter and fiveyear-old son why it is that the windows of churches are being smashed and pride flags vandalized on a recurring basis (Optimist, Aug. 15).

I live directly behind the Ladner United Church, and I’ve lost count of the number of hateful incidences that have occurred. These cowardly acts are repulsive. Articles will continue to be written reflecting the overwhelming consensus and support of the Ladner community for all people – but what I’m becoming increasingly aware of is the hate that you are teaching our young people.

Whoever you are, your senseless acts are not communicating what you hope they would – they are simply teaching kids how to hate. If you were truly

proud of the noble mission you were on, you’d perform these acts in the middle of the day – not disguised in the dark of night. What kind of legacy do you hope to leave?

In our home, you’re known as the person who teaches us what hate looks like. You, my friend, are hard to love, but I’m choosing to teach my children that even you are worthy of it.

I wish for you a future that can embrace that love for yourself and others.

Too late for this beautiful spot

Editor:

There’s a once-in-a lifetime vista available for residents taking a weekend walk to the upper part of Diefenbaker Park.

Removal of decades of overgrown shrubbery has revealed a view of the whole of Boundary Bay, high rises to the

northeast, port gantries, and the mountains.

It is unique and stunning, but it will soon disappear again as builders raise three trophy houses on the site.

It is too late for this site, but there surely will be others in the future.

Gail Neff Bell

I regret that the City of Delta did not buy the lot when it was for sale a few years ago and create a public viewpoint which, I think, would have been as much appreciated by those who use Fred Gingell Park. We need a policy of, and a budget for, public purchase of strategic sites.

Library should open Family Day

Editor:

As reported, Delta’s libraries being open on Sundays during long weekends is a positive change and presents an excellent opportunity to discuss the possibility of opening the libraries on Family Day.

Philosophically, closing the libraries on Family Day is insupportable.

Delta’s recreation centres remain open on Family Day, suggesting that physical activity is permissible while

intellectual activity is not.

Positive impacts of opening libraries on Family Day are:

* Promotes intellectual engagement

* Supports lifelong learning

* Enhances community connection

Overall, opening libraries on Family Day aligns with the values of education, community, and accessibility, making it a beneficial change for everyone involved.

members Bev Yaworski and Doug Reynolds in an email to the city, which was sent to the Optimist

ijacques@delta-optimist.com

The Friends of Ladner Village continue to push back at the idea of a possible tourist hotel in Ladner Village, which the City of Delta has started reviewing.

During the past few weeks, Friends of Ladner Village has started an information awareness campaign and has collected 1,600-plus names on a petition requesting that the city puts in place at least a one-year eviction extension for the remaining businesses on

the Chisholm Street site, to allow more time for businesses to find alternative locations.

The group has also written to the City of Delta staff and council seeking an update on the engagement process and the expression of interest process for a hotel that is currently being undertaken by the city.

“We also feel a thorough heritage-impact assessment should be done on the Chisholm buildings because of their close connection to Delta’s fishing and farming history,” wrote group

“The B.C. government’s recent decision not to give longer waterfront leases on Chisholm may put any Ladner Village Waterfront Revitalization development efforts on the back burner and creates a big question on why the rush to evict Chisholm businesses now for a “supposed” speculative hotel and a potential tearing up Chisholm for new sewer, water, etc. upgrades.

“We urge you to seek a better compromise that respects Delta businesses, residents, and Ladner’s important heritage.”

Cops for Cancer’s Tour de Valley fund-raising ride returns in September

Cops for Cancer’s Tour de Valley — an annual cycling fund-raiser presented by the Canadian Cancer Society — returns to the Fraser Valley region for its 2024 edition, from Sept. 13 to 20.

Participating police officers and emergency service personnel will cycle for eight days across 800 kilometres in the region.

Each participant solicits donations from the public, which go towards pediatric cancer research and support programs such as Camp Goodtimes, a summer camp created especially for children battling cancer.

Five additional Cops for Cancer rides take place in various locations throughout B.C. and Ontario.

Daryl Krumbhols, an officer with the Delta Police Department, will be among the 20 riders taking part in the 2024 Tour de Valley. He also participated in last year’s ride.

Krumbhols began training for this year’s ride in March, usually cycling between three and four hours per week. In recent months, his weekly training

has spanned five to seven hours, usually divided among two or three days.

“Riding 100 km takes a minimum of four hours,” says Krumbhols.

“So, it requires that you spend more time training, and you try to do it more than once a week — maybe one long

ride and a couple of shorter ones. It does add up.”

On Aug. 14, Krumbhols estimated he had raised approximately $5,000. The 2024 Tour de Valley’s overall fundraising goal is $320,000. Krumbhols will be riding alongside

officers and emergency service personnel from Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Surrey and elsewhere.

Another DPD officer, Steven Clarke, is slated to ride, but he broke his wrist during training, so his participation will be dependent upon speed of recovery.

“I enjoy the camaraderie with the other riders, says Krumbhols.

“It’s nice to not only spend time with people who have similar interests and work environments, but to be able to get out and do some physical activity.”

As well, fundraising for cancer research is a cause that’s close to Krumbhols’s heart.

Both of his grandmothers and a brother-in-law passed away from the disease, and one of his aunts is a cancer survivor.

“I don’t think you could find somebody that hasn’t been affected by cancer,” he says, adding that when he and his DPD colleagues take part in public fundraising drives, “We’re constantly having people come up to us and say, ‘I’m a survivor. Thank you for doing this.’

“We may not always recognize it, but I think everybody has been touched in some way.”

Drug harm-reduction supplies now available for free

In the first six months of this year in B.C.,

People needing harmreduction supplies can have them delivered to their door for free under a new program announced by Fraser Health.

Fentanyl-screening strip kits, injection and inhalation supplies, Naloxone kits, and safer sex supplies are all available through an online portal with delivery coordinated by MTS Logistics. Pamphlets and instructional videos explain how to use the products, Fraser Health said in a news release.

Having the supplies delivered is an alternative to picking the supplies up at overdose- prevention sites, supervised consumption sites or public health units.

“The unregulated toxic drug supply crisis requires us to think outside the box — in this case, deliver the box of harm-reduction supplies — to individuals who don’t typically use in-person services,” said Erin Gibson, manager of clinical operations, toxic drug response and priority populations. “There are many reasons people

don’t access in-person harm reduction and drug-checking services, including lack of transportation and stigma.”

She said Fraser Health continues to encourage people to have someone witness their drug use whenever possible to reduce the risk of overdose.

Mountainside Harm Reduction Society, a nonprofit group, packages the supplies and MTS Logistics coordinates delivery.

The portal connects clients to Fraser Health resources including clinical and outreach teams and virtual-care options. Fraser Health currently supports 12 overdose prevention and supervised consumption sites. There are dozens more locations in shelters and supportive housing where people can use substances in monitored settings.

Harm-reduction supplies and fentanyl strip tests are also available for free at all Fraser Health overdose prevention sites, supervised consumption sites, harm reduction sites, and public health units.

Beach Grove members raise $25,000 for KinVillage Day Program

The Women Membership of Beach Grove Golf Club has a longstanding tradition to annually hold a Member and Guest event with the goal of raising needed funds for a local charity and/or a community group in Delta.

This year a record amount of $25,000 was raised for the KinVillage Day Program.

The Day Program helps older adults with health challenges continue to live at home by supporting physical functioning, cognitive functioning, health monitoring, and caregiver well-being.

Participants usually visit on to three days per week where they can enjoy a variety of support and services. This vital support helps individuals remain in their own homes as long as possible. The program offers a wide range of care, activities, and respite services for seniors and their caregivers.

“KinVillage is incredibly grateful to the organizers of the Beach Grove lady golfers and their guests for choosing KinVillage’s Day Program as their charity of choice this year,” said Director of Development Kristen Thomas.

“Their commitment to making a difference in the lives of older adults is truly inspiring. These funds will help so many in our community that are struggling with caregiver burnout. Thank you to everyone who participated and donated.”

KinVillage also recently hosted a very successful lawn bowling fundraiser which raised $58,000 – also in support of the Day Program. For more information and to donate to the Day Program see: www.kinvillage.org.

Southlands Grange and Century Group bolster mental health support

The Southlands Grange Centre for Farming & Food Foundation affirmed their commitment to community wellness by hosting a series of events during Mental Health Awareness Month in May to benefit The Step Forward Health Society. Hosted at the Red Barn in Southlands, several wellness workshops took place: expressive painting and breathwork with Home Grown Creative, cardio and movement, yoga and creative side-walk chalk with Ballet Beats, and yoga and breathwork with First Thunder and Hummingbird Healing. Collectively, $1,100 was raised and Century Group generously

matched these donations, resulting in a total of $2,200 raised to support The Step Forward Health Society programs.

“What’s very exciting is you have local businesses of all sizes who have a collective desire to collaborating together to shore up mental health supports in Delta,” said Meg Neufeld, President of The Step Forward Health Society.

The Step Forward Health Society, a Ladnerbased charity, is dedicated to breaking down barriers to mental health services, ensuring that individuals, couples, and families in Delta can access the support they require.

Designed around the populations that are slip-

ping through the cracks, the society provides various programs: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a group for individuals with intense and significant mental health issues; When Love Hurts, a group for women facing intimate partner violence; MENtor, a group for abusive men who want to change; Pain in the Arts, a creative mind-

fulness group for chronic pain management; a mental health support group for LGBTQ+ teens; the Step Forward Program, that subsidizes mental health services. With the generous support of Century Group, The Step Forward Health Society will be hosting their launch and fundraising event at The Red Barn in Southlands on

Nov. 16. This event will introduce the community to the society’s mission and programs while raising additional funds to expand their services. The event will feature live music, a live auction, several notable speakers and provide more information on how community members can support Step Forward’s initiatives.

“Both the Southlands Grange and Century Group’s support has significantly amplified our fundraising efforts, allowing us to reach more people in need of mental health services. Their commitment has made a substantial impact on our ability to provide comprehensive support to our clients,” said Neufeld. -Submitted

Love and worship in the Anthropocene

On a beautiful Saturday evening in July, I joined a small gathering along the bank of the Fraser River for Vespers, an ancient evening prayer service.

After sunset, we walked to a nearby house and waited for a few neighbours to join us. Suddenly, a young girl pointed at the house shouting, “There’s one!” “There’s another,” someone giggled. “How many are in there?” wondered another in our small but widening circle. “At last count, there were 3,600 living in the attic,” replied Rev. Laurel Dykstra, the priest of Salal + Cedar, a community that helps people grow in love of place and commitment to ecojustice.

Minister’s Minute

The Burvilla house on Deas Island is home to the largest maternal bat colony in B.C. For two decades the colony of mostly Yuma and Little brown bats (an endangered species) have coexisted in the heritage home along with the caretaker.

Many refer to the mass extinction of species driven by human activity over the past 500 years as the Anthropocene. How do we live, work, and worship at a time when at least 100 species go extinct every day?

Through his teaching, compassion, and hospitality, Jesus invites us to widen our understanding of neighbour and kinship. Following Jesus’ expansive trajectory, can we see the animals among us not as pests to eradicate, but as neighbours to love? As the sun sets on the world as we know it, instead of putting our heads in the sand or looking to future technology to save us, might we take a moment to look up in wonder?

DSS grad produces third feature film

Local author, Hip Hop artist, festival host, actor, filmmaker and long-time Ladnerite, Daniel Joseph is set to premiere his third feature film.

The Guardian is a pulsating action-packed thriller about the highstakes world of espionage.

“This is the Canadian Jason Bourne,” Joseph says, and is excited to now showcase his film at all the major film festivals.

Joseph is a producer for the film, and has a supporting role as politician, Robert Gates.

In addition, he has two new songs which are featured in the film soundtrack.

“It’s been an awesome opportunity to be involved in front of the camera, behind the scenes, and with some of the music for the film,” Joseph adds.

The film’s director and executive producer is Pale Thomas, another South Delta resident, and it is the second project that Joseph and Thomas have collaborated on.

The first was as feature music documentary called Vancity Raps which covers the Vancouver Hip Hop music scene.

“Making this film was the hardest thing I’ve done to date,” Thomas shares.

The Guardian now enters the international festival circuit, and the two producers will travel to Las Vegas in November for the American Film Market to acquire distribution. Joseph and Thomas premiered their film for cast and crew on Saturday, Aug. 3 at The Cinematheque in Vancouver.

How families can get ready for a new school year

Children will soon be trading in the chimes of neighborhood ice cream trucks for the bells of school as summer vacation gives way to the start of a new academic year. August through September is prime backto-school season, with children across the country stocking their backpacks and shopping for new school wardrobes.

There is more to getting ready for the start of school than making sure pencils are sharpened and tablets are charged. Parents and children can work together to ensure the transition back to the classroom is as seamless as possible.

Acclimate to being around people

Although summer vacation may involve trips that bring children in contact with other people, it may have been some time since they’ve spent five or more hours per day around 20 to 30 people their age. It may take a transition period to get used to being around a bunch of peers, so

families can visit places where there tend to be crowds of kids, such as zoos, aquariums, parks, and trampoline centers. These can be low-pressure locations to dust off social skills.

Know the route or plan for school transportation

Students may be driven independently, ride the school bus, walk or bike, or carpool with others to and from school. Families can establish plans so that getting to and from school is not something kids need to worry about. Practice routes and timing, taking into consideration that when schools open there will be much more traffic. Parents can reassure children that there will be a learning curve, but all the kinks generally get worked out during the first week.

Avoid ‘summer slide’

Most students don’t want to think about studying, homework and testing while on summer break, but it can be beneficial to stay current on

some lessons. Summer slide refers to the loss of some of the learning achieved during the previous school year over the summer break. Some experts say summer slide is overstated, but it can’t hurt for students to refresh their memories

on some math, science and language arts concepts over break so that they will be ready to hit the books when the new school year begins.

Prep for school lunches

Children and adults can work together to

map out healthy eating options for school lunch. Many school districts have lunch plans that can be purchased through an online account.

Participating students simply enter a number or swipe a code at checkout.

School lunches are built

to be nutritionally diverse and have options that even picky eaters will like.

School is right around the corner, and families should get ready for the routine and needs that go with the academic year as the first day draws closer.

Adjust sleep and wake times

Summer vacation often means letting loose of schedules for a while, and that may translate into later-than-normal bedtimes and rising a little later in the morning. Everyone in the household will have to reacquaint themselves with schedules that ensure kids get to school on time. A few weeks before the first day of school, start incrementally going to bed at an earlier time and start waking up earlier each morning. Try to plan out the increments so that by the time the last few days of summer vacation wind down, the family is on target with a waking schedule that mirrors the school schedule.

Study tips for a strong start in school

Studying is vital to academic performance.

At the dawn of a new school year, students get a fresh start to improve upon or continue strong their study habits. Teachers will be rolling out their curricula, and that may feel overwhelming. However, optimizing study skills can boost confidence in school and in areas outside of the classroom. These study tips can put students on a path for success.

Find your optimal study space: The ideal study spot varies from student to student. Some need a quiet nook in the library, while others may prefer the sounds of nature while seated on a park bench. There’s no one-size-fits-all study location, so students may need to experiment with what works best for them.

Devise a study plan: Setting goals and a plan of attack allows students to space out their studying over several days. This can reduce stress and make the task seem less cumbersome.

Avoid cram sessions: Devising a study plan is better than cramming the night before a test. Studying with a goal of

Students will spend a

retaining the material long-term is important. Learn how to actively study: Some students think that studying requires reading over the material or highlighting text. Active studying involves engaging with the material and constructing meaning from the text. One way to engage with the material is to try acting as the teacher and explaining concepts to another person. Creating a study guide or even concept maps also helps one actively study.

Balance intensity with laid-back study approaches: Students may procrastinate with their studying because

they don’t want to devote a lot of time to the task. Instead, they can do shorter sessions mixed with longer sessions of studying.

Ask for help: Asking a teacher or another student for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a good strategy to develop early on. The longer one waits, the more difficult it may be to catch up on material. Asking for help goes together with setting up a buddy system for studying. Study groups enable students to go over material together, which can provide different perspectives and help the material resonate more effectively.

DELTA SPORTS A’s beat Brewers for Western Canadian championship

Winnipeg team defeats South Delta 2-0, at Ray Carter Field, Sunday afternoon in Winskill Park

action at the senior men’s Western Canadian Baseball Championships, at Ray Carter Field, in Winskill Park, in Tsawwassen.

The Winnipeg A’s are the senior men’s Western Canadian baseball champions after a 2-0 win over the South Delta Brewers, in Sunday’s final, in Tsawwassen.

The Brewers played host to the five-team tournament at Ray Carter Field, at Winskill Park.

Also in the tournament were the South Delta Padres, Marysburg Royals from Saskatchewan, and the Parkland Twins, from Alberta.

The A’s, Brewers and

Padres, all finished the round robin with 3-1 records.

The Brewers beat the A’s 4-2, Royals 9-4, Twins 5-1 and lost a wild Saturday night game to the Padres 16-13.

The Padres beat the Royals 1-0 in a seventh inning walk-off, beat the Twins 7-2 and lost to the A’s 4-3.

Based on runs for and against, Winnipeg advanced to the final, while the Padres and Brewers played in a tiebreaker in which the Brewers won 5-4.

This was the first time that South Delta

hosted this tournament, which according to Dan Hodgens from the host Brewers, was deemed a huge success.

“The park was full of fans and Baseball BC was very complimentary of how the tournament was run, so we are quite proud of that,” he said.

“The visiting teams had a good weekend … they spent lots of money in the community, that’s for sure.”

The season is over for the Brewers, while the Padres are still in the playoffs for the Lower Mainland Baseball Association.

Tsawwassen racer moves to next round for chance to drive F4 in France

PHIL MELNYCHUK

pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com

Carter Lundy has a need for speed, which comes in handy if your career goal is to be an auto racer.

After winning a go-cart race in June, Lundy earned a scholarship for a week of racing in France, and has advanced to the quarter finals, at the Jacques Villeneuve FEED F4 Driving Academy in Magny-Cours, France, south of Paris.

The Tsawwassen resident will be back in France in two weeks to compete in the finals, which could earn him a seat in French F4 race car next racing season.

Formula 4 racing is a step up from

go carts and involves open-wheel cars with engine sizes up to 1.6 litres and maximum horsepower output of 160 bhp.

“He had a great week and got faster every day. Today, he put in his fastest laps, finishing in the top four, sending him through as the only Canadian in his group,” said his mom, Nicole last week.

She said her son is now training and fundraising for the final competition which begins Aug. 27.

Tsawwassen’s Carter Lundy is heading back to France next week for the next round of qualifying to hopefully land a spot on a F4 race car team for next racing season.

Her impressive performance was closely followed by her teammate, Kim, who excelled across multiple events. Kim recorded personal best times in the 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 free, and 400 free, finishing within the top eight in each event.

Ho also demonstrated remarkable skill and consistency, placing in the top eight in the 400 free, 1,500 free, and 200 fly.

Head coach Judy Baker expressed pride in the athletes, whose extensive training and commitment to the sport have clearly paid off.
