The Delta Islanders continued their best start in franchise history by roaring back for a 19-11 win over the Burnaby Lakers Sunday night. A community tradition that dates back more than a century continues this weekend under what are forecasted to be sunny skies.

The 119th edition of Ladner Pioneer May Days will make Memorial Park the place to be as festivities get underway Friday evening and carry on throughout

the weekend.

The first event of the 2015 May Days actually took place last night with the selection of the May Queen.

This year’s theme is medieval, which will see the Society for Creative Anachronism take part in armed combat demonstrations, storytelling and more at the fair-

grounds.

Memorial Park will also play host to a midway, live music, craft fair, petting zoo, pony rides, fastball tournament, food vendors, beer garden and much more.

The parade, a highlight of the fair, takes place Sunday at noon.

Delta wants the scope of the environmental assessment widened for the Terminal 2 proposal.

Delta council recently agreed to submit several resolutions to this September’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, including a request for the provincial government to ensure the scope of the assessment includes the wider community as well as environmental impacts associated with increased road, rail and marine traffic.

Local politicians also want the development of inland port facilities to be included in a wider ranging assessment.

T2 would be constructed on a new man-made island adjacent to the existing Deltaport container terminal at Roberts Bank. The proposed facility would provide additional container capacity to meet Port Metro Vancouver’s forecasted demand until 2030.

The port has submitted a comprehensive application

A lengthy federal environmental assessment is now underway for the proposed three-berth container port at Roberts Bank known as Terminal 2. known as an environmental impact statement to Ottawa.

That submission will trigger a lengthy environmental review process involving a panel.

According to Delta, it is also a reviewable project under the B.C. Environmental Assessment Act.

A report to council notes the port has indicated it has no control over rail or marine traffic outside the lands it manages, and limited care and control over road traffic outside of its jurisdiction.

“The suggestion that an assessment of a project on the scale of Terminal 2

would not include the road, rail and marine impacts that extend beyond the footprint of the terminal is extremely concerning for Delta and other municipalities that will be directly impacted by the increased traffic from the port,” the report states.

“The B.C. government must ensure that these impacts

are fully assessed and that mitigation options are considered that may be located at some distance from the port operation, including the development of inland port.”

Richmond council recently conveyed support for Delta’s call to expand the scope of the T2 review.

Expanding the scope of the upcoming assessment for Terminal 2 makes abundant sense, says Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington.

Supportive of Delta council’s call for a wider ranging review of the potential impacts of Port Metro Vancouver’s proposed threeberth container facility at Roberts Bank, Huntington told the Optimist the terms of reference for the assessment should include the cumulative impacts, including road and rail.

The port, though, says it does not have “care and control” of those areas, she said.

“It is such nonsense

because those facilities, the SFPR (South Fraser Perimeter Road) and the train out to the Deltaport, wouldn’t exist without the port in the first place. So it’s ludicrous. What we don’t know are the terms of reference, they haven’t been released yet.”

The Fraser Institute has published its annual rankings of B.C. secondary schools, identifying what it says are schools that are improving or falling behind.

The Report Card on Secondary Schools in British Columbia 2015 rates 289 public and independent schools based on a variety of metrics, including annual province-wide exams, grade-to-grade transition rates and graduation rates.

Despite consistently being above the provincial

average when it comes to graduation rates, the Delta school district once again didn’t do too well in the eyes of the report, which usually has private schools ranked the highest.

The highest ranked high school in Delta was Southpointe Academy, a Tsawwassen private school, which placed 15th overall.

The highest ranked public school was Burnsview Secondary in North Delta, which placed 96th.

As far as South Delta’s public high schools, Delta Secondary ranked 118th and South Delta Secondary

was 132nd.

B.C. teachers have long dismissed the rankings as both flawed and misleading.

The Delta school district last year noted the rankings are not a true reflection of the system.

“Whether they are choosing a school or already have children enrolled, our rankings are the go-to source for parents who want to find out how a school is doing over time or when compared to other schools,” said Peter Cowley, the Fraser Institute’s director of school performance studies.

The data in the Report

Card also enables comparisons among B.C.’s 57 public school boards, Cowely said.

“Ultimately, it is B.C.’s school boards that are responsible for the quality of the education services their schools provide. If schools in an individual board are not doing well, a fair question is: ‘What is the school board doing about it?’”

In 2014, seven of the top 10 school boards — based on the average overall rating of the schools they operate — were located in Metro Vancouver, according to the Fraser Institute.

A local mother-daughter duo is taking on one epic journey in the fight against cancer.

Lydi Mah and her daughter Madi Tani, a Grade 12 student at Delta Secondary, are training, and fundraising, to take part in the 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer.

The annual 200-kilometre ride takes participants through the Lower Mainland and south across the U.S. border to Seattle over two days — Aug. 29 and 30 — all in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

“It’ll be a challenge,” Mah said. “But it’s nowhere near the challenge that people go through with a diagnosis.”

Tani has raised money for cancer research before.

There’s going to be a wide array of artwork available to the highest bidders at an upcoming art auction fundraiser for the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers.

Looking to raise money for legal bills in the ongoing fight to prevent radio towers from being erected just south of the Tsawwassen border in Point Roberts, the coalition is holding the Delta Lifestyle Art and Travel Auction on Sunday, June 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Harris Barn in Ladner.

The event, which will have former BCTV weatherman Norm Grohmann as host and Delta councillor Ian Paton as auctioneer, will see a variety of donated works on the block in both live and silent auctions.

BBC Broadcasting Inc. has filed an appeal in Skagit County Superior Court in the hopes of overturning a decision by the Whatcom County council. The council had upheld a decision by the county’s hearing examiner to reject the company’s application to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way in Point Roberts, just a few hundred metres from the Tsawwassen border.

The towers would transmit South Asian radio sta-

tion KRPI, AM 1550. Also known as Sher-E-Punjab AM 1550, the station currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, but wants to relocate them for a stronger signal for its Lower Mainland audience.

The coalition, which has concerns over blanketing interference with household electronics as well as health impacts, maintains the proposed location for the towers violates Federal Communications Commission guidelines for population density.

The coalition also says the fight is far from over and is becoming increasingly expensive. Noting the appeal will be heard this fall, Urquhart said more than $130,000 (U.S.) has been raised and almost all of it has gone to legal fees.

The Corporation of Delta, which has expressed its opposition to the towers, is providing the Harris Barn rent-free.

LIVING MATTERS My son is home at the moment.

You know this, not because the son’s car might be in the driveway or because his shoes might be in the hall or because his suitcase might be in his bedroom.

You need only open the fridge.

The telltale signs are not what you might imagine: six-packs of Heineken or Corona, for instance. No, you can tell the son is at home when you open the fridge in search of, oh, a glass of OJ, and notice that it has become home to many little containers.

They are Styrofoam, most of them, and they contain a variety of items. Half a beef dip. Five pieces of sushi. A third of a cheeseburger, with fries. A bit of

wilted Caesar salad.

Common to all of these items is they are only parts of their former selves. In other words: they’re leftovers.

The son is doggie bag practitioner extraordinaire.

Where other people might say to their restaurant servers: “You know, I don’t think I’m going to take home those three bites of shepherd’s pie,” the son will say: “Oh yes! I’d love to have it packaged up!”

Rare is the occasion when the son will leave a restaurant without a bag in his hand.

You might think this is because the son tends to, well, over order, but this is not necessarily the case.

While some people may happily bid adieu to those last four bites of their BLT — hey, who wants leftover toast, especially when it’s cold? — the son is not that way inclined.

Perhaps it’s because he’s been a starving student for so many years. Perhaps it’s because he’s never quite

What I do know, however, being more or less the keeper of the refrigerator, is that a Styrofoam container will tend to take up space in the fridge for three days, on average, before I’ll toss the contents in the compost.

This is how the cycle goes. The leftovers arrive.

The leftovers sit. The leftovers are tossed. Yes, just as they would have been had they not been carried home in the first place.

I’m not the only one who notices.

The son’s friends, who tend to dine out with him more than I, have suggested that he might expedite the process at the ordering stage, and ask that threequarters of his meal be placed on a plate, and onequarter in a take-home bag.

He’s interesting, this son of mine.

I’ll take his leftovers, odd that they are. That’s the price of having him home.

MURPHY’S LAW The hand wringing that has taken place over the pending demolition of the Kittson House leads to one rather obvious question: How serious are we about preserving heritage structures?

Time has taken a toll on the centuryold home near the junction of highways 10 and 99 and it’s only a matter of days before that distinctive edifice is turned into a pile of rubble. It’s disheartening to see the old yellow home, one with so much history and in such a prominent location, disappear from the landscape, but it’s not the first to go and, unless we revise our approach when it comes to heritage buildings, it won’t be the last either.

There’s no doubt that Delta made a genuine effort to save the home, but it was in such disrepair that the price tag to restore and relocate it was prohibitive.

The pending loss of another piece of the municipality’s past has renewed talk of forming some sort of society or foundation to act as catalyst to save similar structures in the future. Such an entity could definitely play a role, but between costs and limited potential uses, I’m not sure that’s the answer.

A foundation was formed to restore the Kirkland House, yet two decades later there’s still work to be done to the stately home on Arthur Drive. That’s by no means a knock on the good folks that have given considerable time to the cause, but rather highlights the challenges that face such an undertaking.

What’s more, although beautiful to look at, the old homes aren’t overly functional as public space. The Harris Barn has quickly become a favoured venue — maybe too popular in some cases — because it provides adequate floor space to host events, unlike most heritage homes that are chopped up into smaller rooms.

The need for more publicly-owned historic homes is a hard sell, but that doesn’t mean they should be left to wither. Rather than turning to public ownership, is there not a way to make their restoration an attractive proposition for those interested in living there?

I’m not sure how to do it, but property tax exemptions and the waiving of all civic fees would definitely be a start.

People are willing to pour money into their home as an investment, so if there’s a way to make restoration economically viable, perhaps more would be willing to give it a whirl.

There’s a cost attached to such incentives that we’d all have to bear, but it gets back to the original question: How serious are we about preserving heritage structures?

COMMUNITY COMMENT I’ve left it long enough. It’s time to decide which box to tick — yes or no?

I’ve had a few people ask me how I intend to vote. I’ve gone back and forth over the past few weeks. I started off as a staunch “no” — TransLink, at least from the outside, looks like a catastrophe in motion. “The vote isn’t about TransLink,” we are told, but the ballot is in my hand, so no one can tell me what this vote is about. To be fair, Delta didn’t get involved in the push for a yes vote, opting instead to let us decide on our own how we wanted to vote. Politically and practically, it was a good decision.

TransLink’s performance during this process has been a classic example of not controlling the message. I got a real kick out of some advertising I saw recently, a

great example of how poorly this is being handled.

I’ve been in the communications industry for a long time. If there is one thing you learn very quickly, it’s that you always think like your customer, and how that customer will see your ad. That’s the context I used when I saw this one, which still has me shaking my head.

I was driving home, following one of the community shuttle buses. On the back of the bus was TransLink’s ad with the headline, “You are riding one of the most cost-efficient bus systems in the world.” Oh, really now.

The ad was on the back of the bus. If I truly was riding on one of the most cost efficient bus systems in the world and needed to read that, I guess I’m standing on the rear bumper hanging on for dear life, because I can’t see the ad from the inside of the bus. Strike one.

Now, when I am reading this ad, which is talking directly to me (it does say, “You are riding,” so it’s talking to me), I am sitting in my car. Oddly enough, from where I live and have to travel to every day, my car is my most efficient transportation system. Strike two.

lic relations campaign. This wasn’t a time to tell me something (an ad), but a time to listen to my concerns and explain to me where I’m wrong, or how you’ll make it better (public relations). Strike three.

So I’m voting “yes.” Yes? Yes. Why? One way or another, we are going be taxed more for transportation. If I’m going to be paying for it, I see 0.5 per cent added to the PST is the fairest way. A consumption tax — the more you have, the more you spend, the more you pay. I really don’t care why the whole “yes” side wants me to vote that way, I’ll vote “yes” because I believe it is the best public policy.

Directly or indirectly, we will all benefit from a better transportation system.

It’s too bad Jimmy Pattison is chair of the accountability committee overseeing the funds the tax will generate. I’d like to see him on the TransLink board where he’d really ensure accountability.

So my ballot is finally ticked. It’s about time.

Editor: It appears I have been one of the chosen few to have a new super mailbox land in my yard.

Technically, it’s not my yard as it’s on a corner the municipality owns, but I maintain it, etc.

Anyways, we all have been made aware of changes coming to mail delivery.

Like it or not, the fact some people will be affected more severely than others is an issue that hopefully will be managed with minimal pain. Maybe communities can come together to help each other out.

A couple of weeks ago I answered a knock at the door by someone with no ID, but he had a picture of my property with the superbox superimposed into the desired location. He was a nice guy and he was only

Another liquefied natural gas facility is coming to Delta.

WesPac Midstream Vancouver LLC, a division of Texas-based WesPac Midstream LLC, has received permission from the National Energy Board for a 25-year natural gas export licence.

Subject to final government approval, the export points include a new marine terminal in Tilbury, adjacent to the existing FortisBC

LNG plant. WesPac would be granted a natural gas export licence that has a maximum term quantity of 116 billion cubic metres of supply, gas the National Energy Board deemed surplus to Canadian needs.

WesPac would export LNG sourced from the FortisBC plant.

FortisBC, meantime, is undertaking a $400 million expansion of its Tilbury facility.

“LNG is currently produced at the Tilbury LNG plant for sale in local British Columbia markets

A statement at the time from Minister of Natural Gas Development Rich Coleman noted: “Our province has a vast supply of natural gas to support expansion and energy demands. WesPac will work with FortisBC to build an LNG operation near Vancouver that will serve both domestic and international needs.”

It’s nesting season for birds A crow was rifling through my plastic recycling this morning and pulled a tangle of bags clear of my carefully stuffed bin.

When I went to tidy up, the crow cawed loudly, annoyed to be disturbed from its important work of finding nest material.

May is bird nesting season and, for many of our neighbourhood species, it is time to find space in our crowded world to lay eggs and bring up young ones.

With natural landscapes disappearing from the Lower Mainland, finding a good nesting site can be challenging.

Unlike many woodpeckers, the northern flicker will reuse holes from previous seasons, but this year our local flicker distained last year’s nest in a decaying snag, and hammered a significant hole in our neighbour’s siding.

Barn swallows are also drawn to buildings and their mud nests are often built under house eaves, a habit that some people dislike.

Herons are busy building nests in trees on the bluff in Tsawwassen.

If you have nesting swallows, please try and tolerate them. Swallow populations, like those of many insecteating birds, are in steep decline and they are now on the endangered species list. Delta still has a fairly healthy local population around the farmland, where local landowners allow them to use barns and sheds.

Not only swallows benefit from farms. Only a few barn owls live in Canada, and Delta’s farms provide excellent nest sites and hunting habitat for them in fields and hedgerows.

Some birds build nests in trees and bushes, in holes or among the branches. Many suburban gardens lack the density of vegetation nec-

essary to support nesting birds, so homeowners miss out on the beautiful song of the American robin on spring mornings.

Thrushes, finches, darkeyed juncos and blackheaded grosbeaks need thick foliage and tangled shrubberies to provide suitable nesting sites, hidden from cats, raccoons and hawks. Bushtits that build woven, hanging nests need a steady supply of aphids to feed their young, so like hummingbirds, are attracted to flower gardens.

Natural gardens are more likely to have birds.

Chickadees often take to nest boxes and have large broods, so it is easy to provide a home for these little birds.

Other birds nest right on the ground, such as the northern harrier, killdeer and savannah sparrow, three species characteristic of the Boundary Bay marshes.

Here they face the hazard of other animals stealing their eggs or eating their young.

Please keep dogs on a leash when walking the dike to avoid disturbing nesting birds.

May Days to get medieval this year Parade, carnival, entertainment and more at Ladner5s annual spring celebration Ladner Pioneer May Days returns for more fun and excitement this weekend.

The historic annual fair takes place at Memorial Park with festivities beginning Friday evening and carrying on throughout the weekend.

This year’s theme is medieval, notes May Days coordinator Jennifer Middleton, adding the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval re-creation group, will be at the fairgrounds on Sunday with armed combat demonstrations, arts and sciences of the Middle Ages, storytelling and singing bards, and even a baron and baroness.

“It should be pretty fun,” she says.

Established in 1896, Ladner May Days is billed as one of the province’s largest free family fairs.

The fun includes carnival

rides, a petting zoo, pony rides, gold panning, face painting, paddleboats, the Delta Gymnastics tumbler tents, the Nylon Zoo from the Corporation of Delta and more, she adds.

The parade through Ladner Village, a highlight of the fair, takes place Sunday as does the traditional May Pole Dance and crowning of the May Queen ceremony.

There are live musical acts on the weekend as well as a craft fair.

A variety of food vendors will be at May Days for those looking for a bite to eat.

While she has spent 15 years on the fair’s committee, this marks the first year as May Days coordinator for Middleton.

“It’s nice to be part of the history,” she says.

75 entries are expected for parade One of the highlights of the annual May Days celebration winds its way through the streets of Ladner Sunday at noon.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parade should include approximately 75 entries, notes May Days chairperson and fair coordinator Jennifer Middleton.

May Days goes Medieval is the theme this year.

The procession, which includes a range of commu-

nity groups, heads through Ladner Village and ends up at the fairgrounds at Memorial Park.

The route will start at the corner of Chisholm and Delta streets near the harbour. The parade will head south on Delta Street, turn left on 48th Avenue, right onto Arthur Drive and then another right onto 47th Avenue towards Memorial Park.

Variety is name of game at craft fair

There will be a wide range of items to peruse at this year’s May Days craft fair.

With space for about 30 vendors, there will be a good variety of offerings, notes coordinator Shari Barr.

“It’s a great mix,” she says.

A few examples include jewelry, purses, wallets, bracelets, Tupperware, baby quilts, dish clothes, clothing and even homemade natural dog treats.

“It’s a great variety,” she says.

Barr also notes a lot of the items are handmade.

It’s really nice to see many vendors continually return to the fair, Barr says.

“We have a lot of people who come back year after year.”

Vendors come from around the Lower Mainland, she says. A couple is making the trip from Hope to attend, she adds.

The craft fair runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

Stage lineup has music for all tastes The stage entertainment at May Days has a number of music genres covered this year.

First up on Saturday is Instant Connection, consisting of Marshall Forsythe and Tina Hoell. The duo has a mellow, folksy sound but Forsythe also possesses a great rock voice, says May Days coordinator Jennifer Middleton.

Bridge City Band will follow with jazz music.

Local entertainer George Ellenton caps off Saturday’s performances with his Frankly Yours Frank Sinatra tribute act.

“We’ve done Johnny Cash,” says Middleton, “we’ve had Elvis, and why not try Frank Sinatra?”

Ellenton, the former Delta Academy of Dance director, started performing his Sinatra tribute in 2007. He’s previously said Sinatra’s always been a part of his life and that he’s always loved the famous singer’s music, style and voice.

On Sunday after the traditional May Queen crowning and May Pole dance, Brit pop act RPM will take the stage with a bunch of good dance tunes.

“Hopefully there will be some dancing in the sun on Sunday,” says Middleton.

Out on the fairgrounds Sunday, the Society for Creative Anachronism will have wandering musicians, or bards, doing storytelling and singing.

In addition to the bards, Stories on Wheels and Shady Isle Pirates will be returning to May Days.

Plenty of tasty fare at this fair What’s a fair without some tasty snacks and meals to go along with all of the fun?

Ladner May Days has it covered with a range of options. Choices include pizza, fish and chips, burgers, hotdogs, dim sum, wraps, baked potatoes and more.

Meat-free eaters will be in luck as well.

“For the first time we have a vegan food truck coming,” says food coordinator Khya Fellingham.

She is also looking forward to having a new grilled cheese food truck at May Days.

“Grilled cheese trucks are pretty big right now and we were very lucky to be able to get this one.”

Returning favourites include wood-fired pizza

and Hunky Bill’s Ukrainian fare.

“They tend to be a fan favourite at the PNE as well,” says Fellingham.

On Sunday there will be a food truck serving up mini doughnuts and smoothies, she adds.

Fellingham also says that people with suggestions for food at next year’s fair can send a message via the May Days Facebook page.

A Kiwanis pancake breakfast is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Sunday.

You do not need appointments to bring in merchandise to sell, but certain days are better for some things than other days.

Canadian coins can be brought in Monday thru Saturday.World coins should be Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Stamps should be Tuesday or Thursday.

Scrap gold jewelry and sterling silverware or jewelry needs to be brought in on Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

I am the person in charge of buying that and those are the days I am in.

How long it takes depends on how many items you have to sell.

We have speeded up the process with the purchase of a new gold testing machine.

This machine is top of the line and determines the exact purity and composition in less than 30 seconds.

This is done in two ways.

First, your Will should contain a “Trust for Minors”, so that if you and your partner die any money you have is left to your kids in trust until they are of age (at least 19, though commonly 21 or 25).

You can select a person that you think would manage your estate with love and compassion towards your children – often a sibling or close friend - instead of the somewhat impersonal “Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee” and Family Services if you don’t have a Will.

You can also appoint a Guardian to look after your children if you are not there to do so. Ideally a Guardian will be someone the kids know, maybe an aunt or uncle or close friend with children of similar ages.You could consider making a reciprocal deal with a friend for each to agree to be the Guardian of the other’s children.

Guardianship is not set in stone; the Courts always have the last say as to what is in the best interests of the children. And that’s a good thing; if the person you appointed has moved away, or is ill, they may no longer be the best choice. Pioneers leaning on homegrown talent Sam and Nathan Clare lead senior “B” lacrosse team to its fifth consecutive win to start season, 9-4 over Langley BY

The Ladner Pioneers returned to the floor Thursday night just long enough to remind everyone they are still the team to beat so far in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association.

Going through a strange stretch in their schedule that sees them play just once in 25 days, the Pioneers remained perfect (5-0-0) with a 9-4 victory over the Langley Warriors. They won’t be back in action again until May 28 when seven-time defending champion Tri-City Bandits (3-10) visit the Ladner Leisure Centre.

“They are always the measuring stick,” said Pioneers assistant coach Sam Thauli. “They have lost a lot of guys from last year but never can be counted out. They also could be a different team after July 1 (roster deadline) depending on what WLA cuts they bring in.”

Shoring up their roster with late season additions was also part of the Pioneers’ strategy but not now.

The club is taking advantage of talent coming up through Delta’s junior programs and is content to sticking with a homegrown flavour, regardless of what its rivals are doing.

The tone was set early this season with a competitive training camp that

has produced a roster with plenty of depth and some tough line-up decisions for the coaching staff.

“This club has had some good runs in the past by bringing in players for a short period of time. It’s almost like rebuilding on the fly,” said Thauli. “But we wanted to get away from that. I believe it’s more important to have the local flavour which brings more fans out and helps get the community behind us.

“This is a long lasting (successful) franchise and guys want to stay and play here. I’m pretty excited about the group we have right now. There’s a lot of young legs and speed. It’s always been a struggle (getting) left-handers but not now. We have a ton of them which gives us good balance on both sides.”

Among the lefties are Sam and Nathan Clare. The high-scoring brothers led the way against Langley by combining for seven points.

Sam just joined the team after another outstanding field season at Simon Fraser University where he earned First Team MCLA All-American honours as a senior. His first period hat trick was part of a seven goal outburst. Nathan also scored twice.

The Pioneers took their foot off the gas the rest of the way — managing just two goals over the final two periods — something that did not sit well with the coaches. The Knights

Just four days after being selected No. 1 overall in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, the Delta Hockey Academy standout signed his WHL Standard Players Contract.

“I still have lots of work to do but I’m excited about coming to Spokane and working to make the team when I’m 16,” said the Lloydminster, Alberta native.

The blueliner came to the academy for his second-year of Bantam eligibility. Smith is unsure if he will return next season or play closer to home. He is certain the WHL is the best route for his promising career.

“My main goal is to play in the NHL, so growing up, I always wanted to play in the WHL,” he explained. “It’s a great place to develop as a player and as a person. Like the 72-game schedule and how WHL teams are big on helping in the community. I’m excited to do those things.”
