As the hot, dry weather continues with little relief on the horizon, Delta and Metro Vancouver are stepping up restrictions.

Last Friday, Metro Vancouver moved to Stage 2 water restrictions.

“We need to reduce our discretionary use of water including lawn sprinkling and washing cars,” said board chair Greg Moore.

“Our reservoir levels need to be maintained for priority needs in our homes and businesses, and for community needs like fire protection.”

Moore said record temperatures and virtually no rain in June mean the public must conserve water whenever possible.

Under Stage 2, sprinkling is restricted to just one day a week between 4 and 9 a.m. Even-numbered homes can water on Mondays, while odd-numbered homes are permitted to do so on Thursdays.

Watering lawns is prohibited during the evening when water demand is highest for domestic uses like cooking, dish washing, laundry and showers. The increased restrictions apply to lawn sprinkling only and not to hand watering flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees.

Last month, Delta council moved to beef up enforcement around water restrictions with a bylaw amendment giving bylaw officers the power to issue tickets to those sprinkling outside their designated day and time.

The fine for watering outside the allotted day and time under Stage 2 restrictions is $250.

A forest fire-induced haze blanketed Delta last weekend, prompting Metro Vancouver to issue an air quality warning late Sunday.

The last time Metro Vancouver implemented Stage 2 was in 2003.

Last Thursday, Delta upgraded the fire danger rating from high to extreme.

The rating comes with an open burning ban for all areas of Delta, which includes a ban on campfires and open cooking (briquette and propane barbecues) in all parks until further notice.

Under the ban, smoking is also prohibited in Delta parks.

In a further move

Monday, in light of the weather and air quality conditions, and the number of active forest fires throughout the province, Delta announced the closure of Watershed Park and the Delta Nature Reserve to the public until further notice.

The police and fire departments and other civic staff will be patrolling parks, beaches and Burns Bog access points to enforce burning bans and park closures. Anyone found violating the ban could face a $200 fine.

The Lower Mainland, including South Delta, was shrouded in a smoky haze Sunday and Monday as several forest fires burned around the region. Fires in the Sunshine Coast and Pemberton area, as well as one on Burnaby Mountain Sunday morning, pushed smoke into the Lower Mainland.

The smoke prompted Metro Vancouver to issue an air quality warning late Sunday due to high concentrations of fine particulate matter due to the smoke.

Metro Vancouver advised people with chronic underlying medical conditions to postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted.

In light of the air quality advisory, the Corporation of Delta encouraged residents to visit air-conditioned community centres to keep cool and avoid the smoke.

For those affected by the air quality and heat, and do not have transportation options to community facilities, call the Delta Police Department’s non-emergency line at 604-946-4411.

Chief Neil Dubord was sworn in last week, replacing retired chief Jim Cessford, who headed the department for the last 20 years.

The Delta Optimist is settling into its new home this week.

Last Friday, the Optimist packed up and moved two blocks south to take over the old Ladner Baptist Church building at the corner of 47A Avenue and Delta Street.

It seemed fitting for a newspaper that’s been chronicling the community since 1922 to be housed in one of the oldest buildings in Ladner, said general manager Dave Hamilton.

“We are proud to occupy this beautifully restored heritage building,” said Alvin Brouwer, Optimist publisher and president of Lower Mainland Publishing.

Brouwer said after years of operating out of the second floor of an office building in Ladner Village, the paper wanted a street-level location.

“We want to be closer to the community,” he said, adding readers are welcome to stop by.

The church was constructed with the help of community volunteers in 1901-02, just 20 years before the Dunning family settled in Ladner to start the Optimist.

The Optimist has moved two blocks south to the historic church building at the corner of 47A Avenue and Delta Street.

It was home to the church for several decades before the congregation moved to a new location on Ladner Trunk Road.

The building also housed a day care centre for several years.

It had fallen into disrepair when developer Steve Knoblauch stepped in to save it in 2011.

The spire, which was added to the original building in 1910-11, was leaning and the building had begun to sink.

Knoblauch and his con-

struction company, RAM Construction, installed a new concrete foundation, righted the spire and moved the entire structure six feet closer to the 47A Avenue.

While the interior of the building has been somewhat modified to accommodate a busy newspaper office, many heritage features have been maintained, including the hardwood flooring and stained glass.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said the result of the transit plebiscite announced late last week was not unexpected.

“I’m not surprised,” Jackson said following last Thursday’s announcement that the “no” side had received 62 per cent of the vote to just 38 per cent for the “yes” side. “The entire process has been difficult from day one.”

She said all of the planning and discussion around the proposed transit plan went on behind closed doors, and then was presented to the public for a vote.

So unusual, we thought.

It occurred to us that no matter where we were — on the subway, at the park, strolling along the Seine — there were precious few people walking and eating at the same time. Well, except when it came to gelato.

“This is different,” my husband said.

“This is nice,” I added.

In our part of the world, of course, folks view meal time a tad differently. We’re all about fast food. And drive-thrus. And to-go cups.

We have places to go and people to meet. We have deadlines and appointments and schedules that stretch for weeks ahead. Is there time to relax over three meals a day? Not a chance.

But perhaps when you’re off on vacation.

We happily joined the sit-in.

We went to sidewalk cafes. We went to bustling bistros. We went to outof-the-way eateries hidden in cobblestone lanes that wound around in circles.

We were running late. We were in Paris, waiting for a cab to take us to the airport.

The croissants were done, the coffee was not.

“Excuse me,” I said to the server. “Do you have any to-go cups? You know, so I can take along my coffee?”

The server looked puzzled. Clearly, he didn’t understand, but that had nothing to do with his ability — or inability — to comprehend English. He simply didn’t know what I was asking for.

In Paris — and elsewhere in Europe, it appears — the to-go cup seems as foreign as the jumbo Slurpee or the Teen Burger. You may see one, but it’s rare.

There, the locals take their cafes au lait in the quaintest of ways: sitting down. On chairs. At tables,

It was all quite civilized.

The locals sat there and dined — lingering, chatting, lingering some more.

No one seemed focused on inhaling a meal and bolting from the establishment to — do what? To log on and add more hours to the work day? To make haste to the closest crowded freeway?

Not a chance.

They munched on their baked camembert and their boeuf bourguignon and their coq au vin, behaving for all the world like people are supposed to behave when it’s meal time. They sipped their reds and whites and their cappuccinos and talked — I’m guessing — about their kids and their vacations and their piedsa-terre.

I saw no one ask for a doggie bag. They had the time to eat their meals.

We did the same, and came home decidedly chill.

The trip is done and I’m back at work, but not everything’s quite the same.

I no longer carry my coffee. I like to sip it sitting down.

MURPHY’S LAW I have to hand it to Tour de Delta organizers as they continue to make subtle changes to ensure the annual cycling weekend is as fan friendly an experience as possible.

Tsawwassen has always hosted Sunday’s road race, which has become more prestigious in recent years with its international sanctioning. The problem with a road race, at least from a spectator’s perspective, is that it can be — How should I put this delicately? — a bit on the boring side. Even using a course with a loop, riders only come by every so often, leaving long stretches where nothing is happening, at least not in front of you.

This year’s race aims to remedy that somewhat by altering the course to feature dual loops, which means riders will pass by the start/finish line at Dennison Park every eight minutes rather than every 16 minutes as was the case in previous years. If my math is correct, that’s going to make it twice as exciting.

We have seen the Friday night race in North Delta evolve over the years to the point where it’s now a much better experience for spectators.

When the Tour de Delta launched 15 years ago, North Delta played host to the hill climb, where riders tackled the steep slope of Centre Street in pairs, racing against the clock. That lasted a few years before it was replaced by a prologue in the centre of town, which was better, but not by a lot as it still had riders competing on their own against the clock.

In recent years North Delta has played host to a criterium over the same course as the prologue, mirroring what happens in Ladner Village on the Saturday evening of Tour de Delta weekend, the one race that’s been so exciting it hasn’t required any tweaking.

I consider myself a casual cycling fan in that I enjoy the spectacle, marvel at the athleticism and appreciate the competition, but at the same time I want to be entertained. It’s not terribly compelling theatre if you’re only seeing one or two riders at a time or the gaps between glimpses of the peleton are so large you wonder if those Spandex-clad cyclists have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the line.

I recognize that from a viewing perspective, cycling is more like golf than it is hockey or soccer in the sense that competitors are often spread out over an extremely large playing field.

That makes creating a fan-friendly environment a challenge, so kudos to Tour de Delta officials for doing what they can to make the experience one we can all enjoy.

Create second northbound exit out of Ladner with new bridge ML BURKE

COMMUNITY COMMENT I was surprised over the reaction to my last column about needing more density in South Delta.

Most people actually agreed with me and the ones that didn’t said it was because more people means more traffic congestion with only the Trunk Road exit out of Ladner going northbound.

Their argument seems to be if we have more people moving here, then we will have more cars trying to commute to the city from one exit so don’t allow any more people to come here. That reminds me of Kurt Cobain’s quote about going to the source (rather than teaching women self-defense, teach men not to rape).

If we were to go to the source, it would mean creating a second exit out of Ladner for vehicles heading northbound. Common sense tells me this should be in the planning for the bridge to replace the George

Massey Tunnel, but apparently it is not, at least according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

I was told they won’t do a cloverleaf on the east side to go northbound as it would take up too much farmland. Fine. We know they are going to create an exit southbound onto River Road and Highway 17A, which is good. With the height of the bridge, that offramp would probably have to start fairly high up on the bridge to meet River Road.

My suggestion for the next seven years until the bridge opens is to re-open the old exit at River Road and Highway 99, go one-quarter mile south to the existing Highway 17A overpass and then allow merging with the northbound HOV and/ or single-occupancy lanes heading north.

Yes, there might be a couple of merging tools required, but I’m sure folks much smarter than me can figure those out.

With the Marina Gardens development underway, there will soon be more traffic that would use this exit rather than the Trunk Road exit.

Once the tunnel closes, that quarter-mile section of Highway 99 will be empty. A new Highway

Why not use the old road to access the northbound lane coming off River Road from the east? To my simple mind this would be a comparatively inexpensive, fairly noninvasive fix to a major problem.

This second exit, combined with light rail transit, would make a huge difference to South Delta’s capacity to grow, commute and flourish. It’s not about the number of people, it’s about the movement of people.

Oh yeah, and to get things rolling, give us back the 601 bus to downtown. And “yes” to cutting back the tolls on the Port Mann Bridge during the Pattullo Bridge upgrade. If they don’t do that, the tunnel congestion will go from bad to downright silly.

The new bridge is in the “design refinement and consultation” phase, soon to move to the enviro/ tech studies and public comment phase, which I suspect will be too late to refine much. The time is now to write letters, call people and stay the course.

Delta is providing emergency care on its own Editor: Re. Simple geography puts Delta firefighters at scene quicker, Community Comment, June 24 By focusing on ambulance response times, Tom Siba is missing the point of B.C. Emergency Health Services’ concern with Delta council’s unilateral expansion of firefighters’ role in providing enhanced emergency care.

First, this dispute isn’t about who arrives on the scene first. Firefighters often get to an emergency scene quicker and we greatly appreciate the care they provide, especially with acutely sick or injured patients. We work closely with fire departments, and consider them our partners in care.

Second, this dispute isn’t about ambulance response times. Siba erroneously suggests ambulance response times have deteriorated since 2013 when we made operational changes.

In fact, from 2013/14 to 2014/15 in Delta, our

response times improved by 18 seconds for emergency calls (to 13 minutes, 15 seconds), and by 48 seconds for non-emergency calls (to 23 minutes, 9 seconds). We are getting to sicker patients faster and we are saving lives as a result.

Third, this dispute isn’t about whether firefighters should provide enhanced emergency care. We are actively working with fire departments to allow for expanded services for firefighters, with a coordinated and planned approach, and have formed a collaborative working group representing 15 municipalities in the Lower Mainland. Delta has been repeatedly invited to participate but to date has declined.

Indeed, the real issue is whether Delta should be providing enhanced emergency care on its own, outside the health system, without coordinating with B.C. Emergency Health Services. All we’re asking Delta is to coordinate our response efforts, and

to coordinate on important issues of physician-oversight, licensing and review, for the good of patients.

For example, our paramedics enjoy 24/7 access to a dedicated team of physicians to guide what they do on scene. Because Delta is acting on its own outside the health care system, their firefighters do not have access to this same physician-oversight.

Furthermore, patients treated by Delta firefighters

will not have access to the independent quality review done by B.C. Emergency Health Services should they have concerns.

Delta firefighters have taken a 15-day training course to provide enhanced emergency care, however they are not experienced at this level and have not worked under the supervision of physicians at B.C. Emergency Health Services where much of the learning takes place. Virtually all our

paramedics responding to calls in Delta have a higher level of training and considerably more experience.

We have invited Delta to work with us so we can oversee the services provided, provide firefighters the benefit of our physicianoversight and the associated benefits to patients of working cooperatively inside the health system. We are hopeful they will join us, rather than work outside the health system.

The only way forward is for all parties to work collaboratively and find solutions together. We continue to urge Delta to join us and 21 other Lower Mainland municipalities in developing a plan to enhance pre-hospital care that incorporates first responders while protecting patient safety.

Tsawwassen’s road network can’t handle more vehicles

Editor: Re: Development to bring gridlock and then road construction, letter to the editor, June 26 Tom Morrison has obviously read the “fine print” in the transportation review commissioned by Century Group in 2013.

We all wish our mayor and council at the time had done likewise.

Did council read the report and knowing the traffic problems go against the wishes of the majority and vote to amend the Southlands zoning, or did council not read the report and go against the wishes of the majority and vote to

amend the Southlands zoning?

In either case our council was not in tune with the community and we are already stuck with heavy traffic on 56th Street and 12th Avenue. Many times these roads can’t take the load now and it will get worse when future approved development comes on stream.

So the next time you are waiting for two or three lights, remember those that want to put high-rises in the town square. Absurd to even think of this and obviously not in the best interest of the community.

Her favourite purse that she saved for and bought with her own money is now gone.

Port has delicate balancing act

Editor: Recent letters to this paper suggest a better understanding of a Canadian port authority’s role could be of benefit to those who criticize port expansion or who make statements such as “Port Metro Vancouver is demanding the George Massey Tunnel be removed.”

As a Canadian port authority, Port Metro Vancouver is mandated by the Canada Marine Act to facilitate Canada’s trade objectives in a manner that is sustainable, protects the environment and considers impacts on local communities. It’s a delicate balancing act we live every day.

Canadian trade is growing because Canadian consumers and exporters are demanding it. Our role is to ensure current trade is being handled safely and securely, while also planning for the future, anticipating as best we can what is to come and making sure we are ready.

We fully appreciate the importance of the Fraser River estuary, and our goal is to protect it while still accommodating trade demand. Our team of scientists and environmental specialists not only study and monitor the region, they conduct thorough, technical reviews of every proposed project on port lands to ensure only environmental-

ly-responsible ones proceed.

For safety reasons and to address a significant transportation bottleneck in the region, we fully support the provincial government’s decision to replace the tunnel. The government asked us to provide recommendations on the height of the bridge and depth of the channel to ensure future trade needs can be met.

We have never demanded the removal of the tunnel, nor would we permit any project on the river without first ensuring potential impacts were mitigated.

Delta Hospital receives major gift from BMO Ultrasound room in diagnostic services expansion will be named in recognition of $75,000 donation The Delta Hospital Foundation announced recently that in recognition of a $75,000 donation, the BMO Financial Group Ultrasound Room would be part of the upcoming diagnostic services expansion.

Every year more than 6,600 patients come to Delta Hospital for an ultrasound, a lifesaving piece of equipment that can help physicians understand what is happening internally for a patient, whether it’s diagnosing cancer or showing an image of a new life.

The new ultrasound room will be part of the $12.5 million expansion to Delta Hospital, with the addition of the Peter C. & Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building, which will house the medical imaging and laboratory departments.

“Looking out for our communities is an important part of who we are as a business, and has always been central to our growth,” said Henry Donkers, a regional vice-president for BMO Bank of Montreal.

Tour consists of three races

Here’s a look at the three races that make up the Tour de Delta: • The weekend begins on Friday evening with the MK Delta Criterium in North Delta. Having replaced the race-against-the-clock prologue and the hill climb prior to that, the North Delta crit has become a hit with fans.

It sees riders travel in a pack over the 1.2-kilometre circuit, reaching speeds up to 70 km/h on a downhill section.

The women will complete 30 laps, while the men will do 40 laps of the cir-

cuit that starts and finishes on 84th Avenue, just west of 114th Street.

• Saturday evening’s Brenco Criterium sees riders race on an almost one-kilometre route on the streets of Ladner Village.

It takes roughly one minute for racers to make their way around the course, so there’s almost constant action for spectators. Riders can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h during the criterium, making the colourful peleton a blur as it goes by.

There are many great viewing opportunities, including makeshift patios

of the restaurants that line the course.

• The weekend concludes on Sunday with the marathon-like White Spot | Delta Road Race in Tsawwassen.

The men cycle an exhausting 157.8 kilometres, while the women will cover a total of 105.2 kilometres.

The start and finish lines will once again be at Dennison Park, but changes to the course this year will see the riders tackle two separate loops, which will see them pass the start/finish line every eight minutes instead of every 16 minutes.

Wheel-to-wheel action returns this weekend Delta’s annual cycling weekend is almost here.

Tour de Delta takes place July 10 to 12 and includes the MK Delta Criterium on Friday in North Delta, the Brenco Criterium on Saturday in Ladner and the White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday in Tsawwassen.

This year’s road race will see riders pass by the start/ finish area twice as often (every eight to nine minutes rather than every 16 to 18 minutes) as previous years, bringing more excitement to the action at Dennison Park.

There will also be a big screen at the community festival showing the UCI-sanctioned race live.

Wireless cameras will be capturing the action and sending a feed back to the screen.

“The alterations to the White Spot | Delta Road Race course this year will really see the race elevated by adding further excitement and entertainment for all spectators,” said race director Mark Ernsting.

Points are on the line with international sanctioning

The international sanctioning for both the men’s and women’s White Spot | Delta Road Race ensures the fields will include some of the best professional cyclists in the world.

The men’s race received the distinction from the Union Cycliste International (UCI) in 2013, while the women’s race was internationally sanctioned for the first time last year.

“The UCI sanctioning allows countries to accumulate valuable points towards international rankings, which increases the number of athletes who can compete at World Championships and the Olympic Games,” says Cycling Canada president John Tolkamp.

“Racing on Canadian soil also allows more Canadian riders to participate. That, combined with home field advantage, allows us the opportunity to hopefully maximize the amount of points our riders can achieve,” says Tolkamp.

Recognizing young riders

Tsawwassen Collision is returning as the official supporter for the Young Rider Award in this year’s Tour de Delta.

The Young Rider Award is given to the best male and female rider under the age of 23.

Community involvement has been a theme over the years for Tsawwassen Collision and with owner Peter Sziklai a fan of cycling and cycle racing, the Tour de Delta is a natural fit.

“We are looking forward to seeing some of the rising stars in cycling compete in our community once again this year,” said Sziklai. “We take great pride in being actively involved in our community and feel it is important to support this platform for youth to gain experience in elite level competitions.”

The young rider jersey recognizes future talent in the sport of cycling. Most world ranked riders showcase their talents at com-

petitions such as the Tour de Delta early on in their careers.

“Peter is passionate about the sport of cycling and providing support to local community events,” said race director Mark Ernsting.

“He is committed to being an advocate for providing opportunities for young athletes to gain experience and be recognized for their abilities.”

The Tour de Delta kicks off B.C. Superweek, a demanding stretch of cycling that includes eight races over nine days.

With over $120,000 in prize money, B.C. Superweek is Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series.

It gets rolling this weekend with the three-race Tour de Delta, which features the MK Delta Criterium on Friday, July 10 in North Delta, the Brenco Criterium on Saturday, July 11 in Ladner and the

White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday, July 12 in Tsawwassen.

The UBC Grand Prix, the most technical of the criteriums, is set for Tuesday, July 14. It’s one of the most exciting events from a spectator’s perspective as the riders can be seen almost the entire way around the course.

The Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix on Wednesday, July 15 is one of the most historic cycling events in North America, with past winners includ-

ing Lance Armstrong. With crowds in excess of 20,000 people, it boasts the highest one-day prize purse for a Canadian criterium.

The Giro di Burnaby, a criterium on the streets of Burnaby Heights, is scheduled for Thursday, July 16.

B.C. Superweek concludes with the Tour de White Rock, which has been reduced to two races this year: the Choices Markets Criterium on Friday, July 17 and the Peace Arch News Road Race on Saturday, July 18.

Plenty of highlights from race’s first 14 editions

This year marks the 15th edition of the Tour de Delta, a race that has had many highlights over the first decade-and-a-half of its existence. Here are some of the more notable moments: Tour de Delta 2001 Victoria teen sensation Clare Hall-Patch and New Zealander Graeme Miller were the stars of the show at the inaugural Tour de Delta. Hall-Patch, 18, won the road race and hill climb, while the 40-year-old Miller topped the road race and criterium.

Tour de Delta 2005 Pennsylvanian Sarah Uhl was one the verge of making history in 2005, but the 21-year-old was denied by a two-time Canadian Olympian. Uhl, who won the hill climb and criterium, was looking to become the first rider to sweep all three races, but fell just short as she finished second to Lyn Bessette in the road race.

Tour de Delta 2006 Tsawwassen’s Cam Evans was the omnium winner after strong finishes in all three races. The Symmetrics star was second in the road race and third in

There’s more than just Tour de Delta racing action Sunday, July 12 in Tsawwassen.

A community festival is also planned at Dennison Park, the heart of the new White Spot | Delta Road Race course.

Billed as an all-ages celebration of South Delta sport, recreation and culture, the event will include a sport zone with a range of local sports organizations with active participation activities and information about their associations.

A kids zone will have bouncy rides and interactive games along with activities.

There will also be a Kids Crit (2:30 p.m. for six- to eight-year-olds and 2:45 p.m. for nine- to 11-yearolds). Register in advance at delta.ca/deltareg or by calling 604-952-3000.

A food and beverage zone will include White Spot’s Triple O’s, other food vendors and a Rotary Club of Tsawwassen beer tent.

The community zone will have tents from local organizations and also crafts from local artisans.

Kids get to cycle the courses

Youngsters will be able to warm up the courses for the pros by taking part in a Kids Crit (short for criterium) on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Once the courses are closed to traffic, but prior to the evening’s races, children will be given an opportunity to take a spin in the non-competitive events.

In North Delta on Friday, six- to eight-year-olds will start at 5:45 p.m. and cover a half-kilometre course; nine- to 11-yearolds get going at 5:50 p.m.

and will make one lap of the 1.2-kilometre loop.

The marshalling area is at Richardson Elementary.

In Ladner Village on Saturday, the younger group of cyclists will make one full loop of the .9-kilometre course at 4 p.m., while the older group will do two full loops beginning at 4:15 p.m.

A Ladner Youth Race, which is open to girls born between 1999 and 2002 and boys born between 2000 and 2002, begins at 4:30 p.m. and will see the young

cyclists ride the course for 20 minutes.

New this year is the Tsawwassen Kids Race at the South Delta Secondary track on Sunday afternoon.

Six- to eight-year-olds will do one lap of the track at 2:30 p.m., while nine- to 11-year-olds will do two laps beginning at 2:45 p.m.

Helmets are mandatory and bikes must be in safe working condition.

South Delta Jazz Festival features performances throughout the week

The South Delta Jazz Festival features concerts through the week.

Along with a handful of noon hour concerts at the Delta Community Music School, there will be a show at Diefenbaker Park tonight, an open jazz jam session tomorrow at Petra’s Arts Kafe and a faculty gala concert Friday at All Saints Anglican Stephen Church.

The festival, which had its first concert yesterday, also includes a workshop for students from beginners to adults interested in learning about or improving their jazz improv skills in a small combo setting.

The festival website lists 2015 faculty/guest artists as Len Aruliah (saxophone), Jared Burrows (guitar), Kofi Gbolonyo (jazz and African studies), Kevin Lee (trumpet), Rob Kohler (bass), Brad Muirhead (trombone, workshop co-director), Stephen Robb (clarinet, saxophone, piano, workshop co-director), Jennifer Scott (voice) and Robb Stan Taylor (drums).

The event is a program of the Delta Community Music School.

The school is located at 4705 Arthur Dr., Ladner.

Artists display works to brighten West Shore Laylum care home

Resident Margaret Robb’s paintings provide inspiration for art program The atmosphere at West Shore Laylum care home in Ladner was festive as friends and family gathered to celebrate the work of local artists Margaret Robb, Peggy Stevens and Johanna Krawchuk.

The dining room was transformed into a gallery setting with paintings filling the room and brightly coloured decorations adorning the space.

“Margaret’s art is the inspiration for our new creative arts program at West Shore Laylum,” says recreation supervisor Jackie Berg.

“When I saw the many beautiful paintings she has done, it inspired me to develop the creative arts program. And that inspiration has since extended to our outdoor garden, where we’re finding creative ways to get residents involved in further enhancing our lovely flowering garden area.”

It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an experienced rider. Falls happen all the time – even to professionals. And the consequences can be life altering.

“Safety has nothing to do with level of skill,” says Olympic dressage rider Courtney King Dye, who suffered a severe brain injury while training a show horse in a familiar ring at home.

When the horse suddenly slipped and fell, King-Dye went down too, landing underneath the horse and fracturing her skull. She wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Helmet manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every five years, even if it has not been dropped or damaged. Heat, sweat, dust and rain can contribute to the deterioration of the protective foam inside the helmet shell.

Of course, if you have a hard blow impact accident while wearing your helmet, you should immediately replace it. Many manufacturers offer a discount on crash replacements so riders are not tempted to keep on using damaged headgear.

A top seller at Greenhawk stores is the Tipperary Sportage helmet, priced at $74.99.

Available in carbon grey and cocoa brown matte finishes, these helmets are suitable for both English and Western riding. With optional extra padding, they are easy to fit to most heads and come in sizes XS to XL. As well, Greenhawk sells several styles of helmets that have a dial at the back to create a snug fit. These are ideal for children who are still growing and whose parents don’t want to have to buy a new helmet every year!

When shopping for a new helmet, be sure to have a qualified sales person help with the fit.

The helmet should feel snug without causing pressure points. It should sit about an inch above the eyebrows, with the visor parallel to the ground (not tilted up). Riders with long hair should try on helmets with their hair worn the same way as when they are riding.

A pony tail tucked up under a helmet will increase the size needed.

Remember to strap on your helmet first. Then, saddle up and go have some fun!

It’s a one-game showdown for the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association regular season championship.

A match-up that has been speculated for the past two months finally takes place on Saturday when the Ladner Pioneers (15-1-0) travel to Nanaimo to take on the Timbermen (13-2-0) for just the second time this season.

The only thing separating the two teams was Ladner’s 5-3 home win back on

April 23 to open the regular season, Since then, both clubs have dominated the rest of the league and are the clear-cut favourites to represent B.C. back east at the President’s Cup senior “B” national championships later this summer.

Ladner tweaked its roster at the July 1 deadline by signing veteran right-hander Kerry Susheski and trading for goalie and local product Nathan Wilson. The Timbermen also made some additions for the stretch drive.

Susheski made an immediate impact with three goals, while Sam Clare continued his torrid rookie season with five points, including a hat trick. He now has 43 points in just nine games

since joining the club from his field lacrosse season at SFU. Mike Berekoff and Travis St. Germain also had fivepoint outings, each with two goals. A pair from Nathan Clare and singles from Quinn Waddington, Tyler Wickett, Ryan Keith and Matt Zinn rounded out the scoring.

Matt Morehouse made 37 saves to solidify his status as a leading candidate for league MVP. The Pioneers’ roster currently sits at 24, which creates a competitive environment for playing time

with some tough line-up decisions looming.

“We had a team meeting the other day and the commitment level is there from everyone,” added Taylor.

“We had a tough stretch with a lot of missing guys due to injuries but they are all back now.

“All the guys can see what is in front of them.

They know (the end of the season) is close.”

Regardless of what happens in Nanaimo, the Pioneers will have home floor for a best-of-five semi-final series that is likely to start July 16.

Gymnaestrada is a form of group gymnastics that combines the beauty of dance with the excitement of gymnastics skills and acrobatics.

The team embarked on a year-long fundraising campaign that generated close to $20,000 to alleviate some of the costs of traveling to the event.

“Our journey really began four years ago as we participated in the provincial event in 2012, westerns in 2013 and nationals in 2014,” said Henderson.

“Our choreography improved, our team members were committed and our community embraced it.

“We are so thankful to our club, Delta Gymnastics, the parents, local businesses and community service organizations that donated, participated and supported us in so many ways.”

This will be the third World Gymnaestrada for Delta Gymnastics.

“These are unbelievable events, there is so much energy, camaraderie and fun,” explained Henderson.

Delta Gymnastics will be hosting BC Gymnaestrada in 2016.

The club will be running a four-day camp later this month to give kids a taste for what this sport is all about.

Delta Gymnastics will be representing Canada at the 15th annual World Gymnaestrada in Helsinki, Finland from July 12 to 18.

The worldwide, noncompetitive Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) Gymnastics-for-All event is held every four years.

Participation is for everybody, regardless of gender, age, race, religion, culture, ability or social standing.

“Canada is one of 52 countries represented and our 28-person team will join 21,000 other participants at this event,” said Heather Henderson, Delta Gymnastics Team Gymnaestrada manager.

“Gymnaestrada is not so well known in North America but in Europe it attracts more participants and spectators than the Olympic Games.”

Gymnaestrada is a form of group gymnastics that combines the beauty of dance with the excitement of gymnastics skills and acrobatics. The focus of the program is to provide participants the opportunity to be part of a team and display their gymnastics and dance talent.

“Our team’s youngest member is 12 and the oldest is almost 70 years old, our routine lasts about 10 minutes and our choreography is diverse, action packed and fun,” explained Henderson. “We are the only Canadian team that was given its own performance slot; all the other teams have to share one slot
