It was a chance to say goodbye after close to five decades in Ladner Village. Current and former Delta Museum staff and volunteers, as well as other well-wishers, gathered at the Delta Street museum last Friday afternoon for a final send-off as the facility has now closed its doors to the public. Home to the museum since 1969, the historic former municipal hall building is to be completely vacated this summer in order for major renovations to begin to repurpose it for new community uses. Nothing has been announced as far as where the museum will relocate but the Delta Museum and Archives Society is working with the Corporation of Delta on a new location. While there now won’t be a museum in Delta for at least a year, that doesn’t mean the society is ceasing operations as some programming will still take place, including the 2016 Delta Heritage Fair this April. As far as a new home, the first order of business for museum staff will be to relocate all artifacts to a temporary storage facility until a new site is identi-

fied and retrofitted. “We have a big challenge and a big adventure ahead of us,” society board chair Barb Baydala told the crowd at Friday’s reception. Baydala had told the civic heritage commission a new museum would ideally be in a central location and would resemble a more up-to-date facility, having the ability to accept larger objects. A few years ago the museum moved some of its operations to an annex further north on Delta Street. That move was seen as an interim step as the long-term goal was a new building. RENOVATE: see Page 3

Celebrating women in aviation
Tsawwassen pilot Mireille Goyer is hoping more females give industry a try PRISCILLA LEUNG
Optimist contributor
Everybody remembers his or her first time on an airplane. For Mireille Goyer, she was 20 and on a flight from her home in France to Los Angeles. The Tsawwassen pilot is the founder and president of the Institute for Women of Aviation Worldwide (iWOAW), a not-for-profit alliance fostering gender balance in the aviation industry by building awareness through initiatives such as the upcoming Women of Aviation Worldwide Week and Fly It Forward. Goyer still cites her mother, who had never flown before, as the biggest influence for her love of flying while growing up. “For some odd reason,

Mireille Goyer continues to campaign for gender balance in the aviation industry. she thought that flying was the coolest thing you could do, and never missed an opportunity to share that with her children,” says Goyer. She decided to take things into her own hands and learned to fly while living in L.A., which provided opportunities for quick getaways. Eventually, in 2005,
one of those trips brought Goyer north to where she now calls home, Tsawwassen. In 2009, as March 8 approached, Goyer grew anxious with the excitement of celebrating the centennial of the first female pilot license. However, once the day came, Goyer discovered there was nothing planned
to commemorate this groundbreaking moment in history. “I couldn’t let that go,” she says. “I had invested too much to have such a milestone for all women like me completely ignored by my industry.” It inspired Goyer’s vision for iWOAW. “All we ask is not for them to become a pilot or
become anything, but to give it a shot,” says Goyer, who looks forward to encouraging more girls and women to try something new. While the number of women employed as pilots and aircraft mechanics is still less than 10 per cent, the industry has seen an increase from previous years. iWOAW hopes to see more opportunities as local airports and schools raise awareness. During the Women of Aviation Worldwide Week from March 7 to 13, iWOAW is offering scholarships and prizes for girls and women who take part by flying in a small aircraft. The funding, announced just before the election was called, came from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. Delta had already set aside money and had been

It doesn’t look like the application to build Terminal 2 at Roberts Bank will have to go back to the starting line. During last year’s federal election campaign, the Liberals promised to review and overhaul the environmental assessment process for major projects to restore public trust. It wasn’t clear how that could impact Port Metro Vancouver’s T2 proposal, which had been formally submitted last year after an environmental impact statement was

The federal Liberal government has pledged to review the environmental assessment process for major projects, but how that will impact the Terminal 2 proposal at Roberts Bank is unclear. completed. That submission was to trigger a panel review, although the clock has “stopped ticking” on the application as the federal Environmental Assessment Office has requested additional information for a second time. Last month, Catherine McKenna, minister of environment and climate change, and James Gordon Carr, minister of natural resources, announced an interim approach for major projects, which will form the first part of the government’s broader review strategy. One of several principles will be that no project will be asked to return to the starting line. Project reviews will continue within the current legislative framework under the auspices of relevant responsible authorities. Other principles include the views of the public and affected communities being sought and considered, indigenous people being meaningfully consulted and decisions being based on science. As far as when the application will get moving again, port president and CEO Robin Silvester said the information requested by the EAO will be submitted shortly and they’re still within a general timeline with the application and eventual construction. “What we’re expecting is that the panel process will be starting in the relatively near future. That will start with the appointment of the panel and the panel being briefed… Overall, we feel the process is moving forward reasonably well. It’s an important process and we’ve done a lot of work, but we’re in the right place,” he said.
Silvester noted they are anticipating a permit decision by late 2017 or early 2018, which will lead into a five-year build phase. “We’re still really looking at the terminal becoming into operation by 2023, 2024, which is exactly when it’s needed in terms of the projections of demand with the growth rate we continue to see,” he explained. T2 would be a threeberth facility on a new man-made island adjacent to the existing Deltaport container terminal. Silvester said the plan is to have two of the three container berths constructed and operating at the start, while the third berth would likely be added to the new land mass a few years later. Port Metro Vancouver recently released its 2015 year-end statistics that showed a third consecutive year of strong cargo volumes and records set in the container, potash, grain and agriculture product sectors. Increased trade with Asia accounted for the continued growth in cargo shipped in containers, with a five per cent jump in units for a record of 3.1 million 20-footequivalent units, or TEUs. “I think it would be fair to say Deltaport is nudging up against capacity, so their growth may have been a little bit lower because they’re pretty full. But as they’re adding capacity with the Deltaport Road and Rail project, they’ll have room to grow again in the near future,” Silvester added. Against Port Expansion disputes the ports rosy numbers, saying the case for new terminals is weak to non-existent.

Coalition hoping party will pay off legal bills
The Neon Stars headline Saturday’s fundraiser SANDOR GYARMATI

They’re inviting you to a honky tonk good time to help pay off some costly legal bills. Residents who fought and won a tough battle against radio transmission towers being installed at the Tsawwassen-Point Roberts border are holding a fun-filled fundraiser at the Reef Tavern in Point Roberts this Saturday. The event, featuring vintage honky tonk and swinging country music band The Neon Stars with special guests, as well as games and a 50/50 raffle, is to help pay the huge legal tab incurred by the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers during the successful fight against BBC Broadcasting Inc. The broadcaster planned to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot in the Point, about 300 metres from the Tsawwassen border, but
residents on both sides of the line fought the plan on several fronts. “We had legal bills that amounted to $250,000 US. We raised $236,000 US, so we’re down to $14,000 and people are saying that doesn’t sound so bad, but we’re saying, ‘Wait a minute, that’s a lot of money. It isn’t over for us and we’re still on the hook,’” said Point Roberts resident Armene Belless, a member of the coalition. Fraudulent claims take a toll on B.C. drivers
While most B.C. drivers are honest when it comes to making insurance claims, there are a few that are hurting things for the rest of us in the province. Industry studies estimate that about 10 to 20 per cent of all insurance claims contain an element of fraud or exaggeration. Applying those estimates here means fraud is costing us up to $600 million per year, or more than $100 annually on every auto insurance policy. Fraud cheats everyone and comes in all shapes and sizes. Some fraud is organized and orchestrated by a group of individuals, namely, staged accidents and stolen vehicle rings. Other types of fraud are less obvious. Fraud like this includes exaggerating the extent of an injury, misrepresenting a previous medical condition or slanting the situation when reporting a claim. ICBC combats fraud with their Special Investigation Unit, which last year looked at more than 5,000 claims Hles. After years of attempts to establish one in the community, a Tim Hortons franchise has inched closer to reality in Ladner. Earlier this month, Delta’s community planning advisory committee supported an application to build a restaurant on a vacant lot adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road in East Ladner. A month before, the committee voted not to support the application, but refinements have since been made, including introducing up to 14 interior seats and public washrooms. The previous application was for a walk-in restaurant with a parking lot and drive-thru service. The committee was told the drive-thru queue can use the adjacent gas bar area and that the restaurant can handle a stacking entry area of 16 to 17 cars. David Longpre with Southborough

A proposal to build a Tim Hortons in East Ladner is expected to come before Delta council. Investments Ltd. told the Optimist a study has shown traffic isn’t going to be a problem for the area. Longpre noted the site is about 20,000 square feet, 3,000 square feet larger than another Tim Hortons his company built in Chilliwack and about 6,000 square feet larger than another developer is planning to build in Abbotsford. He described the East Ladner site as “tight” due to a B.C. Hydro right-ofway and a sanitary main running through the property, but said the final design is a good one with
proper flow for cars and access for service vehicles. “We’ve redesigned this about three times over a two-year period since we started. I think everybody’s pretty happy with the current layout,” he said. Planning staff told the committee Delta doesn’t have a policy with respect to drive-thru restaurants and applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. The application has gone back to staff and will come forward to a Delta council meeting for consideration of the rezoning proposal.
Industrial proposal could be last one for MK Delta Lands
If approved, company would turn over its remaining holdings SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It wasn’t a big crowd but a steady stream of people showed up last Thursday afternoon to see what could be the final development proposal by MK Delta Lands. The open house at the Delta Town & Country Inn was an opportunity for the public to learn more about the company’s application to rezone a property near the Burns Bog designated protection area for industrial uses, a plan that would settle, once and for all, the future of its land holdings in the area. “You know, land development is an interesting profession,” said company president Joanne Barnett. “You go through the process. You deal with what you find. You make sure that all of the technical issues are resolved. And then you are dealing with the appetite of the community and see how you can get them to appreciate the value of it. This one is a much easier discussion with the community.” MK Delta Lands had been working on a major housing and commercial

MK Delta Lands president Joanne Barnett is shown at last week’s open house in Ladner. proposal for years, coming up with several versions, only to face opposition from North Delta residents. Located on the east side of Highway 91 between 64th and 72nd avenues, the last proposal included 450 townhomes and up to 650 condos as well as commercial area with a grocery store. The newest application is for industrial on a site west of Highway 91 and part of the proposal includes transferring all the company’s other land holdings in the area, which totals 132.7 hectares (328 acres), to the Corporation of Delta for conservation. It means MK Delta will completely abandon any lucrative housing schemes.
The latest plan to come to Delta council this spring is to build 2.2 million square feet of industrial space on a 62-hectare (155-acre) parcel located adjacent to the Highway 91 Connector (Nordel Way) and the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Once landscaping and buffering are completed, about 45 hectares (112 acres) will have industrial buildings. The company, which is also offering several million dollars to Delta for amenities and agricultural irrigation improvements, says the site is ideally located for logistics or distribution centres due to its proximity to Deltaport and Fraser Surrey Docks, Tilbury industrial area,
the CN Rail terminal, Vancouver International Airport and the U.S. border. The property, zoned industrial but still within the Agricultural Land Reserve, would be developed into several service parcels that would eventually be subdivided into lots between 3.6 and 10 hectares (nine to 25 acres) in size. The buildings would be between 300,000 to 400,000 square feet. An overpass would be built to access the site. MK Delta Lands describes the proposal as a “win-win” for everyone, including Delta, which would receive $3.5 million in annual tax revenue. Not surprisingly, the Burns Bog Conservation Society is lobbying against the proposal, saying projects such as this are dangerous to the natural bog environment. Bog society president Eliza Olson, who was at Thursday’s open house, said a bad deal was made when 200 hectares (500 acres) of important bog land was left out in a major multi-government purchase over a decade ago.

he final chapter of the radio towers saga will play out this Saturday night in Point Roberts. That’s when members of the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers will gather at the Reef Tavern in a dual purpose event — part victory party and part retire-the-debt fundraiser. If you don’t have plans Saturday, you should really consider dropping by the party to throw 20 bucks into the hat and thank the folks that prevented what could have been a most unwelcome intrusion into the community. You owe them at least that much. The idea of locating AM radio antennas on the doorstep of a community with almost 25,000 residents seems absurd (to say nothing of potentially dangerous and undoubtedly annoying), but thanks to jurisdictional issues complicated by an international border, it could well have happened if it weren’t for the efforts of a dedicated few. A group of folks on both sides of the line has spent the better part of three years, as well as somewhere in the neighbourhood of a quarter of a million U.S. greenbacks, fighting the good fight, eventually besting the radio station at both the political and judicial levels. Their victory benefits everyone in Point Roberts and Tsawwassen by preventing radio waves from wreaking havoc with household electronics like has been the case in the Washington state community of Ferndale where the towers currently reside. Trust me when I say you don’t want to experience what the people of Ferndale have been forced to endure. There’s also mounting medical evidence with regard to the detrimental health effects of AM radio waves, so it’s reassuring to know we’ve dodged that bullet as well. The ruling in Skagit County Superior Court was an unequivocal victory, but there’s still a catch when it comes to the campaign that got us to this point: several coalition members guaranteed payment of legal bills that have an outstanding balance of $14,000 US. It would be unfair in the extreme to have those that have done so much for people on both sides of the border to be left holding the bag at the end of all of this. Thankfully, that doesn’t have to be the case and you can help ensure that doesn’t happen by showing your appreciation this Saturday night.
Supply not meeting demand as house prices keep soaring
W
e have lived in South Delta for 38 years. Thought of moving once when I oversaw community papers stretching from Surrey to Chilliwack. Thought it would involve less driving if we moved to, say, South Surrey. It never happened, however. Probably more due to procrastination than anything else. Also we had soon launched the South Delta Today and had acquired an interest in the Richmond News, so relocating no longer seemed so beneficial, especially with two young kids. The positive attributes of South Delta are legion. Ladner and Tsawwassen have a small town feel while being in proximity to all the benefits of a large metropolis. The Agricultural Land Reserve restricted growth and development outside of the established residential communities. The slowing growth in the area began an inexorable decline of the commercial districts. The malls were showing more vacancies, the bowling alley shut down, the movie theatre disappeared. After decades of somnolence, more attention is now being paid to South Delta. Like the rest of the Lower Mainland, prices for single family homes are skyrocketing. In fact, last month South Delta had the highest percentage increase year over year, a 37 per cent
Community Comment TOM SIBA
increase in the valuation of the benchmark price for single family residences. There has been much debate over the lack of affordability of homes in Metro Vancouver, but it is a simple case of supply and demand. Due to Vancouver’s amenities (who doesn’t love rain?), people want to live here, but due to government policies, supply is limited. Locally, one has only to look at the Southlands. Good development or not, it has been 30 years since the first plan to develop housing was tabled. It is still “farmland.” Repeat this result across the Lower Mainland and it is easy to see what the result has been. Supply has been restricted from coming on the market. You don’t need an A+ in Economics 101 to realize that holding back on supply while demand ramps up is going to cause prices to be bid up. In addition, due to the oil and
gas slowdown and actions in Ottawa, we have put property for sale on the international market. Non-Canadians are most likely to be investing American dollars — and in terms of American dollars, we have put property in Canada on sale through the diminishing value of the Canadian dollar. The same property that would have cost $1 million US two years ago can now be had for less than $750,000 US since you can now purchase a Canadian dollar for under 75 cents US. Lower price, more demand. Hence the current land rush mentality in Metro Vancouver. So how will prices survive when and if oil prices climb and the Canadian dollar starts to strengthen vis-à-vis the American dollar? I would anticipate the bubble to deflate but South Delta will fare better than most areas. As well as being a great community to raise a family, it is close to the airport and ferry terminal, access to the beach, relative easy access to Point Roberts and the marina. Also soon to come, new malls and a 10-lane bridge to remove the one knock on the community — the rush hour commute. So the big prices may stall, but don’t fret if you miss it, you will still be in one of the best communities possible. Tom Siba is an ex-publisher of the Delta Optimist who hasn’t joined the rush to cash out — yet.

The hearing has concluded and the board will issue its recommendation on May 20. Our application clearly outlines our plan to expand the Westridge Marine Terminal. We believe that is the optimal location and we are not considering alternative options. Before we submitted our application, we evaluated a number of potential marine locations on the West Coast, including Roberts Bank. Our evalu-
ation determined these locations were less favourable due to a number of factors, including environmental, technical and economic considerations. Nurses definitely earn their money in Delta Hospital ER
Editor: Recently I had to spend a week in the “observation area” of the ER at Delta Hospital. On the Wednesday and the Friday of that week I was transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster for a “heart catheterization.” The rest of my days were spent reading and relaxing on the observation ward. This letter is to acknowledge the care, consideration and concern taken by all of the doctors and nurses that work in the
observation area, especially the nurses that for 12-hour shifts attend to every aspect of their patients’ concerns. Some of these patients were suffering with dementia and the nurses provided them with extra care and reassurance. I do not know what the hourly rate of pay is for these nurses, but I do know they work very hard for every penny they earn. These nurses are a credit to their hospital for the service they provide. I thank each and every

nomic data to make sound decisions on massive government infrastructure deficit spending, we will return to the not so “sunny days” of the elder Trudeau who from a comfortable budget surplus chalked up deficit after deficit to the point the International Monetary Fund took a serious look at Canada as a potential bankrupt. Here is what FDR’s Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau, Jr. ruefully stated in May, 1939: “We are spending more money than we ever spent before and it does not work ... we have just as much unemployment as when we started and an enormous debt to boot.” It was Milton Friedman who once observed: “There is nothing so permanent as a temporary government program.” As if that isn’t enough, there’s John Kenneth

Galbraith adding “insult” to economic “injury” when he observed: “You will find that the government is the kind of organization which, though it does big things badly, does small things badly too.” But former U.S. president Ronald Reagan perhaps said it best: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’” If the “sunny” Liberal promise of “real change” is to have any real meaning, the message to all sectors of Canadian industry must be to face up to the economic reality of modernization and capital investment constituting the only reliable foundation for productivity improvements, sustained profitable growth and international competitiveness. whose plans included setting explosives off in Parliament and beheading then-prime minister Stephen Harper. Garbutt does not hold Harper in high esteem, but I hope he’s not so callous as to wish Harper so cruel a fate. Had Justin Trudeau been prime minister then, he doubtless would have been subject to a similar fate. Nevertheless, Trudeau considers the man worthy of Canadian citizenship. What may we expect from one so hostile toward Canada now he has been granted Canadian citizenship? This seems so much Trudeau’s attitude toward the ISIL threat, that gentle diplomacy is better than military action. Along with massive budget deficits, we can expect potential terrorists to be roaming about Canada. With unemployment at seven per cent, and likely to increase, we are receiving a flood of refugees, who will receive generous financial support as they increase the growing number of unemployed, but these are “sunny days,” as Garbutt reminds us. If these are the “sunny days,” I dread to think what the rainy days will be like. Bernard C. Barton

Taylor Dianne Robinson has been crowned as the 2016 Delta Idol. It was a full house at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre last Friday night as 12 talented young musicians took the stage to perform a song of their choosing in the live finale of the Corporation of Delta contest. “They were all genuinely terrific,” said host Jordy Matheson. Judges, however, were taken by Robinson’s cover of Quiet from Matilda The Musical.
“You held everything in that character,” said Jeremiah Ackerman, a local musician and songwriter whose work has been featured on CBC Radio. “At some point I forgot to take notes.” The Grade 7 student at Tsawwassen’s English Bluff Elementary even managed to perform the fast-paced song with the original character’s English accent. “Not only did you get all the words in but you nailed the accent,” said judge Michelle Carlisle, an accomplished performer, composer and teacher. As judges deliberated, last year’s champion,

Other finalists that performed last Friday include Liette Desnoyers, Arica Dionne, Victoria Johnson, Nicholas Kluftinger, Hunter Lang, Cameron Perry, Mona Subramani, Sami van Gogh and Mary Verdon.

Weird name needed so band in tune with time
Anything goes with today’s musical groups If I started up a girl band, it would not be called the Swingalings. We would not be called the Go-Go Gals. We would not be called the Tra-La-Las. We would be something, oh, entirely in keeping with the times. You know, like Grey Moon Timez. Or the Whisker Perch 3. Or Spandex Fortune. Why not, I say? Today, apparently, anything goes. Today, let’s face it, Maroon 5 and The Barenaked Ladies are decidedly passé. A recent check-in with the Grammys demonstrates those old monikers of the past — think Dave Clark Five or the Steve Miller Band or the Allman Brothers — are about as old school as you can get. Hey, why name yourself after one of your band members when you could be, oh, Slipknot or Highly Suspect? Up for the big prize was My Morning Jacket, which I gather is not to be confused with My Afternoon Trenchcoat or
Living Matters
BARBARA GUNN
My Nightime Pyjamas. Then there was Death Cab for Cutie. No idea where this one came from, but it makes me want to bypass a taxi in favour of a bus. Numbers are also really big in band names these days. We’ve had Four Fried Chickens and a Coke, for instance, which I’m thinking plays a decidedly unhealthy genre of music, and 4 Out of 5 Doctors, which has me wondering what the fifth person might happen to be. A dog groomer, maybe? A Latin dance teacher? Not to be outdone in the
I-don’t-get-it department is the British band The The. Now I don’t know about you, but this one strikes me as completely off the wall. If I ever get my girl band together, it might be called Wired West or Toolbar Trophy Four, but I simply cannot imagine it being called This This. I like Radioactive Squirrels, but that one’s also been taken, as has Mary Carves the Chicken. (I suppose, however, that I could always do a variation of this one. Maybe Cathy Makes the Bed? Or Laura Folds the Laundry?) Today, for crying out loud, something like the Alan Parsons Project would never make the cut — not when we have Children of the Vending Machine and The String Cheese Incident. Want to find success in the tough old world of music these days? You have to think beyond America and The Supremes, and go for Weirdest Band Name Ever.

Under the new International Baccalaureate program, Grade 7 student Ryan Hope has been exploring his passion for architecture.
IB program gets school excited
The current school-year has been a particularly exciting one for students, staff and parents at English Bluff Elementary in Tsawwassen. “My kids are thrilled and are so excited to be a part of it,” said Christine Young, a parent of two students at the school. Young is referring to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme that is now taking place at the school. Last school year, the entire school community came together to investigate the idea of an IB program, an international educational framework taught at more than 4,000 schools worldwide. It was established in 1968 and is renowned for its academic rigour and focus on students’ overall personal development. After much research, the school community overwhelmingly agreed to become an IB school. Throughout this school year, English Bluff Elementary has been in its candidacy phase where it has begun to implement the IB teaching framework. Students learn the B.C. curriculum, but they learn it in a framework that connects learning to global
and current realities, while personalizing learning by allowing students to inquire deeply into their interests. “To have the global perspective is a great gift to give to the children and families of our community,” said Young. “The connection to current events gives the kids ‘ah-ha’ moments in their learning. These real-life connections have been really powerful for my children.” Teachers at the school have embraced planning and teaching through an IB framework, said teacher Toshi Carleton Gaines. The IB model encourages teacher collaboration and promotes teaching and learning that is crosscurricular and interdisciplinary. “The approach is student-centered and exemplifies best practice,” she said. “Students are encouraged to develop a natural curiosity through meaningful inquiry that spurs critical thinking, communication and selfreflection skills.” The IB program at English Bluff is open to any student from kindergarten to Grade 7, regardless of where they live. To register, parents should contact that school at 604943-0201.

Ice Hawks complete upset
Delta takes out defending PJHL champs for first playoff series win in three years MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Ice Hawks scrambling to find additional home game dates at this time of year can mean only one thing. They are moving on in the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. A 3-0 game six victory on Sunday night in Ladner gave the Ice Hawks a 4-2 series win over the defending champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack. It marks the first time Delta has advanced in the playoffs since the 2012-13 season. The Tom Shaw Conference final series against the Grandview Steelers begins on Wednesday night (7:15 p.m.) at the Burnaby Winter Club. As of press time Tuesday afternoon, only game two on Sunday (4 p.m.) back in Burnaby had been confirmed. It’s believed game three will be in Ladner next Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., although the Ice Hawks need to secure at least one more additional home date in the bestof-seven series. Delta stunned the defending champs by jumping out to a commanding 3-0 series lead before the Wolf Pack battled back to win a pair, including a 7-6 triumph in North Vancouver on Saturday night. Game six was similar to Delta’s 5-0 win in the series opener expect, this time, the hosts did all their damage in the final period. After a big penalty kill when Delta Wild affiliate Nick Wilson was accessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for goalie interference, Michael Rand broke the scoreless deadlock when he wired home a power play goal at the 4:32 mark of the period. Captain Quinten Wideski would then add a big insurance marker thanks to some terrific work by affiliate Isaac Embree. The 17-year-old Delta Wild call-up wasn’t done yet, setting up Daniel Rubin less than two minutes later to seal the outcome. Jacob Latrace picked up his second shutout of the series, making 22 saves. The third-year Seafair product came into the playoffs with no shutouts in his junior career — a span of 68 games. The Ice Hawks entered the post-season ranked eighth in the 10-team league defensively, surrendering four goals per game. Yet, they held the PJHL’s highest scoring team to just 15 over six games. Latrace was a big part of that but so was the team’s overall defensive play and the work of new head coach Darren Naylor. “I knew this team was underachieving,” said Naylor who took

a 2-2 series as our goalie kind of stole game three for us.” Naylor said he was well aware of the Ice Hawks’ personnel before agreeing to stepping behind the bench. He was originally going to come onboard when Wes Mussio purchased the club last fall but was spending many nights at the hospital with his ailing mother before she passed away. “I watched a lot of games and knew this team was underachieving,” he added. “When I had to draw up the roster for this series and realized the talent that would be sitting out, I knew what kind of depth this team had.” Icing… - The Steelers are coming off a six game series win against the Richmond Sockeyes. - Grandview won five of the six regular season meetings. The Ice Hawks avoided a sweep by winning the final game 9-6 back on January 16. - Wilson was supsended two games for his goalie interference major.
