Acceptable Use of Technological Devices Delta High School provides access to computing and network resources for students, employees, and others affiliated with Delta High School for school communication and educational use. Members of the Delta High School community are encouraged to use the computers, peripheral hardware (digital cameras, scanners, iPods, DVD players, Smart Boards, projectors, etc.), software packages, electronic mail (email), and software installed by Delta’s technology department. The equipment and software is for educational or school related activities and for the exchange of useful information. Delta High School computer services, equipment, and software are, and remain the property of, Delta High School and the Washington State STEM Education Foundation. Appropriate or acceptable educational uses of these resources include:  The use of Delta­owned software, hardware, and the Richland School District network for scholastic purposes  Accessing the Internet to retrieve information from libraries, databases, and web sites to enrich and expand curriculum  Email capabilities to facilitate communication, apprenticeships, and distance­ learning projects  Use of SharePoint to store and retrieve work from a remote server All users are expected to conduct their online activities in an ethical and legal fashion. The use of these resources is a privilege, not a right. Use of Delta High School technology must ALWAYS be legal, appropriate, responsible, and kind. Examples of inappropriate or unacceptable use(s) of these resources include, but are not limited to, those uses that violate the law and the rules of network etiquette. Resources used in a manner that is disruptive to the educational environment or that hamper the integrity or security of any network connected to the Internet are clear violations of the trust fostered between users and providers. Other unacceptable and provocative practices include:  Illegal copying or downloaded software, music, or games onto any Delta computer including electronic devices such as laptops that are issued or loaned to students


 

The use of AOL IM, iChat, Yahoo Messenger, or other Instant Messaging programs while at Delta As with all forms of communications, network resources may not be used in a manner that is disruptive to the work or educational environment

The creation, transmission, storage, or display of any material in violation of any state or federal law, including but not limited to: copyrighted material; threatening, harassing, pornographic, or obscene material; or material protected by trade secret is prohibited. The creation, transmission, storage, or display of copyrighted materials without the written permission of the author or creator through Delta High School email or Richland School District network resources is a violation of federal copyright law.

The creation, transmission, storage, or display of information or images that could physically or emotionally harm a student, a family, a school employee, or a volunteer is strictly prohibited, in compliance with state law. If the creation, transmission, storage, or display of any information is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment, it constitutes harassment, intimidation, and bullying­all of which are prohibited by the Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland School Districts, Delta High School, and the State of Washington.

The use of Delta High School equipment for personal, financial, or commercial gain, product advertisement, or the sending of unsolicited junk mail, or chain letters is prohibited.

The creation, propagation, and/or use of computer viruses are prohibited.

The forgery, reading, deleting, copying, or modifying of email messages of other users is prohibited.

Unauthorized copying, examining, or modifying files and/or data belonging to others are prohibited.

Intentional destruction, deletion, or disablement of Delta High School or Richland School District installed software on any computer is prohibited.

Vandalism is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, any attempt to harm or destroy the data of another user, the network/Internet, or any networks or sites connected to the network/Internet. Attempts to breach security codes and or passwords will also be considered a form of vandalism.

Destruction of hardware or software or attempts to exceed or modify the parameters of the system is prohibited.


Nothing in this policy shall prohibit Delta High School or the Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland School Districts from intercepting and stopping email messages.

Access to the Delta High School email and similar electronic communication systems is a privilege and certain responsibilities accompany that privilege. Delta High School users are expected to demonstrate the same level of ethical and professional manner as is required in face­to­face or written communications. All users are required to maintain and safeguard password protected access to both personal and confidential Delta files and folders. Unauthorized attempts to access another person’s email or similar electronic communications or to use another’s name, email or computer address or workstation to send email or similar electronic communications are prohibited and may subject the individual to disciplinary action. Anonymous or forged messages will be treated as violations of this policy. All users must understand that Delta High School or the Richland School District cannot guarantee the confidentiality of electronic documents and any messages that are confidential as a matter of law should not be communicated over email. Delta High School and the Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland School District reserve the right to access email to retrieve information and records, to engage in routine computer maintenance and housekeeping, to carry out internal investigations, to monitor Internet access history, or to disclose messages, data or files to law enforcement or the general public where the law allows. Please remember that all deleted histories, files, etc. are still accessible to trained computer technicians. Any information contained on any Delta High School computer’s hard drive or computer storage devices are considered the property of Delta High School and the school districts Delta serves. This agreement applies to stand­alone computers, all electronic devices, and computers connected to the network or the Internet. Any attempt to violate the provisions of this agreement will result in disciplinary action and/or legal action when appropriate. The decision of Delta High School or the Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland School Districts regarding inappropriate use of the technology or telecommunication resources is final. Monetary compensation will be sought for loss of, theft of, or damage to Delta High School equipment. We, ______________________________ and ____________________________, the undersigned, understand that we will be held responsible for all of the information in the above document, whether or not we have read or agree with all of the contents of this policy.
