2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Supportive Climate and Culture Our Vision for Supportive Climate and Culture: At Delta High School, a STEMfocused public high school, everyone matters. Nothing—and no one—is taken for granted. We believe that all students are capable of learning, and we strive to provide an environment where it is safe, engaging, and intellectually challenging. While small size is necessary to achieve this climate, it alone is not sufficient—student, family, and community engagement, democratic principles, distributive leadership, collaboration, and the establishment of an inquirybased learning community are all essential elements in creating an environment where our students and adults feel welcome to learn together. The benefits of creating a positive learning environment, a culture of inquiry, innovation, and reflection, and a climate of passion and enthusiasm are obvious; Delta High School will be a place that students enjoy coming to everyday, an institution that families will value and support, and a source of pride for the TriCities.

Gateways

Designed to measure student progress, Delta HS First Gateways will serve as benchmarks for student Quarter progress and achievement. Purpose: Similar to doctoral work (metaphor): students will provide evidence of learning – they will pass through a gateway on their way to something else. Gateways will be designed to promote coherence and connectedness to the individual student’s learning experiences, while measuring progress

towards a goal. Gateways are not to be a measure of everything that goes on, but discussion/focal points for the learning. First true gateway is sophomore year; however, during first two years at Delta students meet criteria – short term wins that ultimately lead to the gateways. Three Gateways beginning end of 10th grade. Expectation is that students are always working towards Gateways.
